FNOB Revisited

1746616839_35fde8d448_o.jpg

A few weeks ago I ran an entry about players who’ve worn their full names on their jerseys (or FNOB, short for “full name on back”). That post prompted so many contributions that I’ve decided to do a follow-up entry today.

The most interesting case study comes our way courtesy of Les Holmlund, who wrote in to tell me that the WHA’s Alberta Oilers — forerunners of today’s Edmonton Oilers — had the entire team wearing FNOB during their inaugural 1972-73 season. Now, that Oilers team was already uni-notable for a few other reasons. According to WHAUniforms.com (usually a pretty dependable resource), they began the season wearing “ALBERTA” on their backs and then switched to round-cornered nameplates with an unusual font. But there was nothing on the site about them wearing FNOB. Fortunately, Les came up with several photos to back up his point, as seen here, here, and here. So there you have it: The Alberta Oilers, who began by wearing PNOB (province name on back) and then switched to FNOB, almost certainly making them the most eccentrically nameplated team in sports history.

As for additional FNOB examples (aside from those already listed in my previous FNOB post), I’m only listing them if we have photos confirming them. I realize the list is still very incomplete, but here are the latest additions:

Football: Todd Johnson, Andra Davis (also shown here), Andre Davis, Dexter Reid, and Rob Moore.

Hockey: Ron Sutter (with the Flyers, too), Rich Sutter, Bobby Smith, Neal Broten (from his U. of Minnesota days), and Aaron Broten (ditto).

Soccer: Derek Young and Darren Young.

Finally, a few related categories that aren’t quite FNOB but still belong in this discussion:

• Several readers suggested coming up with a separate list for players who wear more than their first initial but less than FNOB, like Michael and Martellus Bennett. If anyone wants to contribute additional examples, I’m game.

• And here’s a unique situation, as explained by reader Roy Ellingsen: “Norwegian former hockey star Carl Oscar Bøe Andersen’s name was so long that he prefered to wear just his initials on the nameplate.”

Big thanks to all who’ve contributed — we’re building a nice little nameplate database here. And if anyone wants to start building a physical collection instead of a virtual one, look what’s up for sale on eBay.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Many readers wrote in last night to report that Virginia Tech’s Victor “Macho” Harris’s left-sleeve uni number was orange last night, while his right-sleeve number (and all his teammates’ sleeve numbers) was white. No photo yet. Anyone TiVo the game? ”¦ I’ve written before about umpires being forced to wear civvies after their uniforms got lost in transit. Now Richard Koh has come up with a video clip of Eric Gregg struggling to find adequately sized gear during just such a situation. Bill Murray’s doing the color commentary, too. ”¦ Minnesota’s women’s hockey team will wear a memorial helmet decal for the rest of this season in honor of equipment manager Bonnie Olein, who recently passed away. Details here (with thanks to Mike Nachreiner). ”¦ Andy Head notes that the Saskatoon Blades wear uni numbers is a very unusual spot (plus they’ll be wearing one weird-ass jersey for Emergency Services Night next month). ”¦ Drew McKay reports that the Slipstream cycling team recently invited fans to submit designs for next year’s uniform. The team is apparently for its argyle motif, so most of the submissions were very argyle-centric (including this one, which is Drew’s favorite). You can see all 613 submissions here. ”¦ The Trenton Thunder have unveiled a 15th-season patch (as forwarded by Ted Kerwin). ”¦ Much better, even if the stirrups are backwards. ”¦ And you can see the stirrups’ laundry tag peaking out here. ”¦ When it comes to baggy pants, like father, like son. ”¦ Remember when Mike Timlin (who probably thinks the term “World Series” is a U.N. plot) wanted to wear the American flag patch on his cap full-time? He lost that battle, but he’s got a flag on his BP cap — closer view here (great catch by Bryan Redemske). ”¦ Steve Necaster reports that the Sabres will be wearing white at home for several games in November. ”¦ Further evidence here and here of the Rangers having apparently modified their hemlines to eliminate Reebok’s scooped shirttail. ”¦ The Mid-Atlantic Hockey League recently unveiled new uniforms for the Indiana Ice Miners (dark, white), Jamestown Vikings (dark, white), Mon Valley Thunder (dark, light), Valley Forge Freedom (dark, white), and Wooster Warriors (dark, white). “We all know the MAHL is minor league hockey, but I’ve seen roller hockey uniforms that look more professional,” says Zak McGinniss, who provided the links. ”¦ “At the Mellon Arena they have a High School Hall of Champions,” writes Doug Keklak. “It’s a hallway in the arena adorned with framed high school hockey jerseys, mostly from western PA schools but there are a few West Virginia schools included in the mix.” Doug’s taken photos of many of them, which you can see here. ”¦ The Devils’ new arena opened last night with a Bon Jovi concert, and Chris Flinn noticed something interesting in the men’s room: “Every single urinal had the Devils logo engraved into the metal.” I’m not sure which is more embarrassing — admitting that you attended a Bon Jovi concert or taking a photo in the bathroom, but either way let’s all salute Chris for his devotion to the Uni Watch cause.

    Re: Multiple Initials on Back,
Mizzou football used to have BD. Smith and BR. Smith for Brad Smith (quaterback) and Brian Smith (DE).

i’ve just seen that slipstream gallery

how many different ways can you make a freaking cycling jersey?

but there are some appealing pictures in there

Back in 1992, Barry Sanders’ brother, Byron played for the Lions too. Those were pretty fuzzy times for me :) , but I seem to remember that Barry just had “Sanders” or maybe “B. Sanders” on his nameplate, while his brother had a FNOB. I’m not 100% sure what each nameplate said though, hell I’m not 100% sure Byron actually played in the regular season. Anyway, I’ve spent a few minutes on Google looking for evidence & can’t find any. Any other Lions fans from back then remember for sure?

In that Carl Oscar Bøe Andersen picture, I had a tough time even finding his initials amongst all the ads! Holy cow.

    Story about the Kings:

During the Nov. 10 games against Dallas, each player will wear a commemorative Southern California Fire Department patch on his jersey, and the jerseys will be auctioned with all proceeds going to the fire victims.

Is there such a thing as the Southern California Fire Department? I wonder if they’ll be wearing different patches, but the capitalization makes it sound like one thing.

re: the Tech player with the odd-colored sleeve number last night – to me it looked like he had slid through some orange paint on the field.
re: the Tech player with the odd-colored sleeve number last night – to me it looked like he had slid through some orange paint on the field.
im pretty sure thats what it was, you could see ornage smeared around the number on the sleeve as well as on the number.

    from yesterday…

tom o’g told us a few weeks ago that dallas is working on new uni’s. nothing he could go into specifics about but he did say that jerry jones always like the shoulder stars…

    link this weekend:

With Florida State wearing special black jerseys for the game and its fans encouraged to “Paint it Black” by wearing matching colors, Oghobaase and company can only hope that a strong effort will make Seminole supporters feel as if they’ve dressed for a funeral instead of a football game as they walk out of Doak Campbell Saturday night.

Excellent PIHL jersey gallery (the Western PA jerseys) the reason West Virginia has jerseys included is they have very few established HS teams, so the few they have play in the PIHL.

There was a moment during last night’s DC United-Chicago Fire game that took me back to the flying helmet numeral from the Alabama game a few weeks back.

A Fire player was accidentally scraped across the face by DCU’s Fred (a FNOB of sorts), causing a contact to pop out. You could clearly see the contact bounce off of his shoulder and flutter to the ground. Sadly, I wasn’t rolling my DVR, so no screen grab available.

I was at the Bon Jovi concert in Newark last night as well. They had a really cool display of around 100 different New Jersey high school hockey jerseys. I wish I had my camera with me though!

Does anybody know when the Devils will play their first game at the new arena? And who the visiting team will be?

Re the MAHL jerseys, I have to disagree with Zak… they may be overdesigned to the point of insanity, but they aren’t unprofessional at all. Just really really really busy.

Those dark Ice Miners jerseys are GREAT. Love the look of long sleeves made to look like short sleeves to match the logo.

I’m a huge Lions fan (sadly) a couple seasons ago we had Brian Walker and Bracy Walker. Check out this picture I found. Hope the link works.

This isn’t personally directed at you, but I’ve never understood why people ask questions like this when they can easilly find the answer themselves with about a minute of searching.

Anyway, I did that searching, and they play Ottawa tomorrow night.

There was a time back in the 80s when the Cincinnati Reds minor league system had two pitchers named Michael Anthony Smith. They called them “Texas Mike” and “Mississippi Mike.” Sadly, the only year they both appeared in the majors was 1989, when Texas Mike was an Oriole and Mississippi Mike was a Pirate, so unless there’s a spring training or minor league picture from their Reds days, probably no FNOB (or nickname on back) fodder here. (Incidentally, neither is to be confused with that other Michael Anthony Smith, who has pitched for the Blue Jays and Twins in the 00s.)

NEW YORK (Associated Press) – All eyes are on the World Series, and Nike is hoping a few notice what the players are wearing.

Nike has outfitted a few key players from Boston’s Mike Lowell to Colorado’s Matt Holliday with new compression shirts, which are designed to support key muscles used by baseball players. And it’s part of Nike’s own World Series of sorts with competitor Under Armour, which pioneered the compression garment sector.

The company said the shirt is one of the top achievements in its Nike Pro business.

“We really feel like this product is a leap forward,” said Eric Schindler, Nike’s apparel director for US sports.

After several years of development and player testing, the tight-fitting shirt has made its major debut at the playoffs.

It has added support and insulation at the shoulder and elbow that Nike says helps improve performance for the muscles that take the brunt of the abuse. Venting is placed on the forearm and underarm to prevent overheating.

The product will soon be available to the public.

Nike is the official underlayer provider for Major League Baseball. But the company has been keenly watching Under Amour, which has largely pushed this market and is the supplier for the National Football League.

Under Armour’s stock has soared since it went public at $13 a share in 2005. But the company’s sales growth appears to be slowing.

Nike spokesman Derek Kent says the company is putting the “full weight of the brand” behind its Nike Pro business.

Nike projects that the segment will grow in the double digits for the next five years and is rolling out three other compression garments during the next few seasons

And here’s a unique situation, as explained by reader Roy Ellingsen: “Norwegian former hockey star Carl Oscar Bøe Andersen’s name was so long that he prefered to wear just his initials on the nameplate.”

There’s a name in there somewhere? And to think that we complain about logo creep. If it wasn’t for the logo creep, he’d be nekkid!

There’s actually more than one Lion’s Fan??? Wow…….

If you read the article about the Sabres wearing white, it says the team wanted to do it so fans could differentiate Divisional opponents from their non-divisional matchups. Um yea, how much of a fan are you if you don’t know who’s even in your division?

I saw this, too. The de-contacted player was Chicago’s Chris Rolfe. Can’t find video clips or a screen grab just yet, but it was very reminiscent of the Alabama “flying helmet number” incident.

I realize that in the early days of the WHA, good arenas were probably hard to come by. But judging by the pics of the old link above, it looks really bad. There’s no seats at all! Everyone gather ’round the glass and let’s watch some pro hockey!
Worst alts, link.
Agreed. I wouldn’t want to be a parent bringing a kid to that game, having to explain why the home team is wearing blood-spattered jersey designs shilling for a hard-R rated movie. Speaking of which, I don’t watch horror films at all, but what exactly were the “politically correct themes” that were making slasher flicks so bad before the Saw series came along?

Also on the Colts the Super Bowl was Darrell Reid with the FNOB, which, when coupled with the Dexter Reid FNOB, makes a lot more sense.

Regarding the Richard Koe Cubs clip….this is from the ticker on May 30, 2007 …

“Uni Watch News Ticker: Stop whatever you’re doing and check out what Frank Mercogliano just found: a mid-1980s video that features umpire Eric Gregg wearing a Cubs windbreaker and struggling to put on some makeshift gear (the umpiring crew’s gear had been lost) and the Expos’ powder blue road uniforms. Plus a double-flap batting helmet, the Cubbies’ old sleeve patch, and strained commentary from Bill Murray. Essential.”

LOL….when you run something as far reaching as this, you can’t remember everything that has been posted over the past two years or so. Still a great refresher for those who never saw it the first time….should be posted and revisited every six months!

    Frank

Since the Oilers shots are against houston that has white shoulders it has to be at least 73-74, year 2 of the league. Houston’s uni’s didn’t look like the pic in 72-73.

    I don’t have a pic/screen-grab, but,

How’s Papelbon getting away with wearing a hat with a grey underbill With the World Series patch????? Is that last year’s hat with this years WS patch? Wasn’t MLB supposed to be cracking down on that?

“Nike is the official underlayer provider for Major League Baseball.”

“official” is officially out of control.

There are a lot of crusty WS branded caps on the field. The league must either provide patches to the team or an on-site embroidery service.

Last year Kenny Rogers wore a BP cap while pitching in the World Series and I remember there was a stink about that. He did have the link, but it is possible it was on all BP hats.

I’m sure Paul doesn’t want us cluttering the section with horror movie talk so this will be the only thing I say on the topic.

As far as a “politically correct theme”, I don’t think there ever was one. The Saw movies just started pushing the audience’s tolerance levels. Those movies just get more and more gory to the point that they aren’t even entertaining, just disgusting. I’ve watched horror movies since I was a kid and won’t watch a lot of the new ones because they are all pointless violence. All gore, no story.

As far as the jerseys go, I like them as a “worn only once” type of thing. They are terribly inappropriate for children though.

We are the few. The Proud. The paper-bag mask wearers.

I once dated a girl from Cleveland and I told her I could maybe give up the Lions and root for the Browns. But then I realized that a) if I was going to go through the trouble of changing my loyalty I should at least try to trade up a little, and b) I couldn’t actually dump the Lions even though I really really really wanted to.

Are the World Series patches sewn on or pressed on, like the link that sometimes fall off MLB caps? A press would be easier for caps like Mike Timlin’s that haven’t been washed all season.

The DB from VA Tech dove for an interception at midfield and slid on the orange trim of the VT logo. He didn’t get the ball, but he did get an orange TV number.

are you sure “COPA” is Carl Oscar Bøe Andersen’s initials and not just a tire company or something? man, that uniform hurts. i’ve always someowhat associated rooting for a team with the uniform itself, and i don’t know how i would cope with that kind of uniform, which probably also changes a lot as new advertisers come in.

In 2000 the Ravens Jermaine Lewis had “JE LEWIS” and Jamal Lewis had “JA LEWIS”. The only pic I could find, and it’s not a great one, is link.

If the London game is technically a Dolphins “home” game, and it’s starting at 8:00 p.m. local time, Miami will be wearing its aqua jerseys, as it does for all night home games, right?

In reference to Saskatoon wearing numbers on the front hem….
The link did it too in their 2 years of existence in the late 90s. And with a much cooler font too. Every time I wear this jersey people ask me why I wear dirty jerseys. LOL

David Villa, like many footballers, actually has his “field name” on the back of his jersey (like Roberto Carlos from Brazil). His full name is David Villa Sanchez.

Jamal Lewis wore “JA Lewis” on the back of his jersey for a couple seasons with the Ravens. Pre-jail time, that is.

You’re right, these pics are from year two. I think the sequesnce of events for the Oilers was: year 1, half season with ALBERTA on the back, half with LNOB; year 2, FNOB, but for how long, I don’t know.

oh yes, it would be so hard o explain that its a promotion for a movie. Ouch that would be difficult. Do you also not want to take a kid to a game if they are giving out hats/shirts, beer cozzi’s, ect that have a beer company on them since you’d have to explain beer to them?

Kansas State linebacker John Houlik wears FNOB — the “ohn” of his first name are in half-sized capital letters. Presumably his brother Joseph does as well, but he’s redshirting this year and doesn’t see game action.

I couldn’t find a photo. I’ll try to get one at the game this weekend.

The rink was called Sam Houston Coliseum, and although you wouldn’t know if from these pictures, there were 9200 seats in there somewhere. Before their six-year run was over, the Aeros had moved into the (then) much swankier Summit.

Regarding FNOB — don’t forget about the LA Rams’ Youngblood namesakes… I only have a pic of Jack, but someone surely has Jim as well.

not sure if this was posted already, its from last weekend. the University of Nebraska Omaha hockey team wore link, which were then auctioned off for breast cancer research.

also, both that team and the Miami University team will be wearing pink skate laces tonight and tomorrow night when they play in Oxford.

What was strange about the Youngblood’s names were stacked that is Jim and Jack appeared above the surname not in front of. So a majority of the time their helmets would hide their christian names. Or was I dreaming this ?

does anyone know if #82 of the steelers was OK after that tackle in the 2nd Andra Davis shot? It looks like his head was ripped off.

ive always found it interesting that while we condemn major colleges for going after high schools with lawsuits and the like when they “borrow” sports logos, that they are still being posted here, making it easier for these colleges to seek out the “offenders”…

lets face it, this blog has become a focus group and like it or not, people who deal with “uni issues, apparel and brand marketing” im sure are watch dogs here.

personally i dont like it when i hear that wisconsin is going after this school or that school for the motion w (it happened to a team in the lehigh valley-PA last year) or that any other college or university is doing the same for a logo.

i move that we no longer post pics of high schools who are, what wisconsin would call “offenders” of this. lets not make it any easier for them…

    any takers?

Since the Rockies have lost road games wearing link and link, do they break out link if they can win at least two at Coors Field and push the series back to Boston? I hope they do, just for the purple haters out there.

Antwaan Randle El was fine after the play. So were the Steelers who went on to win that playoff game.

To echo some of the other posts, I was going to mention the “JE LEWIS” and “JA LEWIS” from my beloved Ravens, but I’ve been beat to the punch.

I do not second that motion. While I feel that Wisconsin should work something out with those HS teams that “borrow” their logo, it is in fact Wisconsin’s logo and the HS either knowingly or unknowingly have infringed upon their trademark.

If it is knowingly then I have no compassion for them; if it was unknowingly, then they should get a better lawyer for the district.

It should not be up to us to protect people who “borrow”, if they “borrow” let them deal with the consequences.

Wow, there are a lot of interesting prototypes and concepts in that gallery which I’ve never seen before. I wonder where some of them came from. Were the Giants really considering an “NJ” logo in the mid-70s?

Here’ a linkof the same thing, and what changes were made to the auction because of some research. I think the history, research, and changes are all pretty interesting.

Has anyone noticed during the World Series games the supremely shameless plug that Fox has been giving for “The Next Great American Band” every time they show the Sox bullpen playing their “drums”? And just so I can keep saying this to everyone I’m in contact with, Joe Buck couldn’t carry his dad’s jock strap, much less his mic, and I think Tim McCarver actually died several years ago.

His full name is David Villa Sanchez.

As he is Spanish, he has two surnames. “Villa” is the surname of his father, “Sanchez” is the surname of his mother.

If he married a woman whose surname was, say “Lopez” and they had a child named Jose, he would be “Jose Villa Lopez.”

You might remember Aranxa Sanchez Vicario, and her brother, Emilio Sanchez, the tennis players. It used to drive me nuts when TV chyrons would abbreviate her name “S. Vicario”; it would be better as “Sanchez V.”

According to Wikipedia, a 1999 Spanish law allows a person to switch the order of surnames.

Not sure if you are collecting College Football FNOB examples, but if you are, I believe John/Joseph Houlik both are FNOB’s for Kansas State.

    a) I have only been casually watching the playoffs and several of the games I have watched have been in places where the sound was thankfully off or not audible (a/k/a bars), but what is the deal with the dugout drumming? It is annoying, and it seems that they have a mic in there so that the pencil tapping sounds like a marching band. And they LOVE to cut to it. Is it related to the fans who were leaning over and slapping the infield wall, or where they just drunk?

    b) Yesterday Joe Buck was talking about how great it is to be a sports fan in Boston right now, what with the “White Sox” in the World Series, the Patriots playing so well, etc. I am not sure, but I think he has made this mistake before.

Or I could ask Google and link. Another article says it is barely audible inside Fenway. Fox sounds like they run it through a Marshall stack.

I heard “White Sox in the World Series” too.

I don’t know the whole story behind the bullpen drumming but Fox only added a mic recently (it hasn’t been there the whole postseason). Fox loves to take something minor and insignificant and put it center stage (i.e. bloody sock) and I feel they’ve done the same thing with the bullpen bit. Little shit like that, how Fox dumbs down baseball, really pisses me off. That, and the mid-inning interview with the Taco Bell CEO.

BEAVERTON, Ore., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Nike today announced the formation of a deeper integration with the National Football League by expanding its current footwear and promotional rights agreement with the League to include branded gloves on-field and at retail and grassroots programming. The new deal will commence in week eight of the 2007 NFL season, beginning with games on Sunday, October 28, in which athletes will be able to wear Nike gloves displaying the Swoosh logo on-field for the first time in more than six years.

    Paul,

I enjoyed your column yesterday (especially since I’m a Steelers fan that was born in the 70s). I have to disagree with you on two points.

    1. I like the bluish/greenish home pants. They don’t make sense, but they look good for some reason. They’re much more interesting than silver pants/white jersey, and they aren’t ugly. I have seen pics somewhere (maybe training camp) where they wore those pants with the blue jerseys, and they did not look right at all. So I am ok with them wearing two different shades of pants.
    2. I am also ok with them having different styles for home and away. The linkdid it before their recent switch, and each uniform looked good. The Penguins also did it in the link. I think it’s a unique thing that more teams should do.

I’m a sweater conservative, but those MAHL jerseys would be pretty sweet if they could lose the wordmarks.

The Iceminers(why not just Miners?) kit is the best use of dye sublimation I’ve seen in hockey.

About Timlin’s flag on hat: I’m pretty sure I have a shot of Timlin AND his son (who regularly shags balls at Fenway BP) with flags on their hats. Unfortunately, my laptop temporarily (I hope) died last night, so I can’t even check my pictures to see if this was real or my imagination. One link on my own blog was from August 17th of this year, with son laying on ground and dad standing next to him, which shows that Mike hadn’t had the flag on there at that point.

The odd thing for me about Neal and Aaron Broten both wearing full names on the back is the fact that their first initials are different, and the more common “N. Broten” and “A. Broten” would have been sufficient, as it was later on when both played for the Minnesota North Stars.

As far as the SAW IV jerseys are concerned. I am the president of the Helena Bighorns, the team that is putting on this promotion. My partner, Oren Koules is the team’s primary owner. Oren produces the SAW movies and I have appeared in 3 of the films as a victim.

While I may agree that normally the theme of the jersey is not for the kids, in this case, given our involvement with the movies, we decided to do it as we have had numerous requests to do it in the past.

As with Major League sports who sell beer and have cheerleaders who wear less than what I don when I hit the sack, parents have to be concious of what they allow kids to see and what explanations they give their kids that do see them.

The SAW IV promotion is a one night event that had disclaimers regarding the jersey.

Next time you attend an Atlanta Braves game, try to explain away the “tomahawk chop.”

It was all done in good taste and as of the time of the writing of this email, we only have 2 jerseys remaining, 2 of which were sold to people who directed me to this site.

Again, we did this with fun in mind and certainly hope this doesn’t offend anyone.

Until the Arizona Cardinals changed their uniforms last year, their dark and white jerseys were slightly different. The red jerseys were plain with no striping, while the white jerseys had some sleeve striping with the Arizona state flag just above the stripes. Nothing major, but different none the less.

Last night I was sitting along the 3rd base line, directly across the field from the Sox pen. I could hear them going all night. Not as loud as they portray it on tv, but I could hear it. It didn’t annoy me at all.
Wow, you were at Fenway last night, very cool. Way to big time us too. Since you were there, what’s the deal with the fans in the front row who slap the walls and the tarp? Any particular reason why Fox continually shows them?
Couldn’t hear them, but I did see some of it between the backstop adn the Rockie’s dugout. I think people need to realize that it is louder to clap than it is to smack padding?
I may have made it on screen if anyone has the game on tape. I was sitting behind 2 girls with a sign that read “Sox Rock Fox” or something to that effect. I got several calls and text messages that we had made it on tv. The ballpark was louder than a rock concert last night
Were you chatting on a cellphone while waving to the TV camera? If so, you need to be forcibly removed by the scruff of your neck and not be allowed to attend another televised sporting event, ever!

Also during my photo search I came acrosslinkof NFL helmet designs presented in a way I have never seen before.
These layouts reminded me of link. My dad and I got the whole set back in the mid 90s. Every time we went to the grocery store we’d get a couple dollars worth. We wasted so much money because we’d always get duplicates. But it was fun; we even made a little mini shelf with NFC on one side and AFC on the other with 3 shelves: one for each division.
JoeS,

They would be the exact same thing. I have at least 100 or more.

“Last night I was sitting along the 3rd base line, directly across the field from the Sox pen. I could hear them going all night. Not as loud as they portray it on tv, but I could hear it. It didn’t annoy me at all.”

If you sat in the bleachers at Fenway, you heard the bullpen band, loud and clear. At first, you wonder where the sound effects are coming from, it’s that loud. I honestly don’t know how they get such a loud bass sound. Yes, there’s a mic out there, but it’s that loud anyway. I think the fact that this person heard it from across the field proves it. As for the banging on the fence, there were those shaggy-haired kids that started that trend in ’04, knowing Fox had microphones nearby. That’s the one that’s loud on TV, but not really loud at all if you’re there.

    From the Blog:

Hockey: Ron Sutter (with the Flyers, too), Rich Sutter

Rich Sutter would have also been a part of the FNOB club with the Flyers as well…Both Ron and Rich played for the Flyers during the late 80’s-early 90’s…..

I got an excellent gameplan for the Rockies tonight..hit/bunt the ball to Ortiz.
I finding it hard to believe that Papelbon can get away with wearing last years stock [grey under brim]. Should he not be wearing what the league mandates??!

I’m sure that there must be a photo somewhere of the Los Angeles Rams with Jack Youngblood and Jim Youngblood spelled out in their entirety. The thing with their names was that their first name was on top of the last rather than before it.

Harris’s number was orange b/c he made a huge play at midfeild and slid on that shoulder. the ground was painted Orange. rewatch the game.

Check out the Baylor helmet in the Martellus Bennett picture. It has “BC” on it, while the uni has “BU”…

Unique initials? Jan Van Brenda Kolff wore “VBK” on the back of his Virgina Squires jersey, as shown by this photo:
    link

Philadelphia Eagles Left Tackle William Thomas (formerly known as Tra) used to have his entire name on his jersey. Unfortunately, I can’t find a picture, yet.

FNOB: In 1994, the Buffalo Bills had both Billy Brooks (#80) and Bucky Brooks (#81) on their roster as receivers. Since “B. Brooks” wouldn’t sufficiently differentiate the two, they both had their full names printed out on their jersies. Alas, I have no pictures of either of them.

Daryl Jones and Dhani Jones definitely wore FNOB when they were both on the New York Football Giants sometime earlier this decade, but I can’t find any pictures.

Sadly, no pic, but in the late seventies, UT had three running backs named Johnny Jones. They were distinguished by their nick names (Johnny “Lam”, Johnny “Ham” and Johnny “Jam”) based on their home towns (Lampasas, Hamilton, and I don’t know).

This may prompt another list of FNNOB (Full Nick Name On Back).

Also, in a separate uni note from the same era, those guys wore tear away jerseys, so I am sure that some fan has PARTS of a game worn in a case somewhere (“CAxxxELL”)

    I love the blog,

    John(ny) “Chi” Jones

when jermaine and jamal lewis were both on the ravens they wore je lewis and ja lewis on there jerseys, respectively

Are the world series patches actually sewn on or are they heat pressed on?
They are (heat) pressed on.
just saw the patch on New Era Colorado Rockies caps around town in Boulder, definitely not embroidered/sewn directly through the hat material.

This is the same as my beloved White Sox caps from World Series 2005, patch is pressed on also. As was their World Champions hat patch worn occasionally in 2006.

I THINK that some of the first cap patches for the World Series were sewn directly on (1999 or 2000?) but am unsure when MLB went the cheap route with these iron-on patches to the caps.
I believe ’95, ’96, and ’97 were sewn directly into the hat. Once baseball started going with the “alternate logo” on the cap in ’98 it was a head pressed patch, and has stayed that way ever since.
