Got two interesting notes over the weekend, both of which call for reader input. The first came from Ryan Burns, as follows:
I’m going to be president of my local lacrosse officials’ association next year. One of the common complaints is about our uniform. The uniform is black shoes, white socks with black tops (the width of black part varies widely, which drives me nuts), white shorts, black belt, black hat with white piping, and a shirt.
The shirt is supposed to have black and white stripes, black collar and cuffs, ¼-zip, pocket, and, for our high school, no patches. The reason for no patches is that for college games you’re supposed to have an American flag above the pocket, a sleeve patch, and a number on the back (that’s a whole other story) and the feeling is that if you have any patches in a high school game and your partner does not, then you would be showing him up. Here‘s an example of proper dress, but you can see black snaps on the back (for a number) and sleeve (for a patch). And here’s me. My numbers and sleeve patch attach by Velcro, but my flag patches are sewn on, so I wear them even though I’m not supposed to.
Some people complain about the high socks, some complain about black hats (heat), some complain about white shorts (get dirty easily), some complain about patch restrictions and having to separate shirts (both long and short sleeve) for high school and college games. I’m thinking we should have the black and white spiral instead of vertical stripes and have advertisements all over, or else button-down shirts with bow ties. But short of that do you have any ideas on how we could improve our uniforms?
First and foremost, Ryan: Don’t change those socks. Love the color block look.
I’m kinda fascinated by the whole snap-on number and patch thing — didn’t realize such a thing existed. And I’m always amazed by the ongoing cross-sport ubiquity of zebra stripes (the origins of which are discussed here).
As for the rest, what say ye, Uni Watchers? Any suggestions for our lacrosse officiating brethren?
But wait, before you deal with that, check out the note I got from Brent Marcus, who contributed the following:
Don’t know if you’re familiar with the show “Ninja Warrior” (airs daily on G4 TV). Massive, ridiculously difficult obstacle course. Competitions are filmed in Japan and the contestants are incredible amateur athletes.
Anyway, here’s the relevance to Uni Watch: Some of the best athletes show up dressed in their everyday work garb. For example, there’s a gas station manager who shows up in his gas station manager’s uniform [you can see him in this video clip]. His choice of khakis and polo shirt has no obvious impact on his performance. ”¦ You’d think these athletes would wear [performance clothing that would] allow the greatest flexibility, range of movement, etc. But they don’t. They wear corporate clothing and street attire, to no ill effect.
I’m sure this is just one example of non-uniform athletics, but to be honest, I couldn’t think of many others. I thought an overview of sports where there are no uniforms at all might make an interesting topic. I’m sure there must be several other examples. Historically, there are plenty — before we entered an age of Lycra and breathable mesh.
Interesting topic. Not sure it has legs, but I’m willing to open the floor to discussion. Your thoughts..?
Membership Update: The first batch of Uni Watch membership cards and fridge magnets went out in Saturday’s mail, so members should watch their mailboxes. Unfortunately, my printer chose Friday to go on the fritz, so I wasn’t able to enclose a cover letter with each card/magnet shipment, as I’d originally intended to do. If I’d been able to enclose such a letter, it probably would’ve looked something like this.
If your uniform number isn’t yet clickable on the membership roster, it means your card hasn’t been designed yet. We’ll get started on the second batch during the next week.
Incidentally, it has been suggested that we offer referee zebra stripes as the design option for the back of the card — an excellent idea that we have enthusiastically embraced. So if you’re a ref and want your card to be designed accordingly, speak up and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.
My continued thanks to all enrollees. If you’d like to get on board, full sign-up details are available here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Stop whatever you’re doing and take two minutes to watch this completely amazing video about the guy who’s in charge of the jockeys’ silks at Belmont Park (with a lifetime’s worth of thanks to Tim McLaugh). ”¦ Nice eBay find here, courtesy of Todd Krevanchi. ”¦ More eBay-ism from Mike Engle, who notes that this guy appears to have every conceivable patch for sale. ”¦ Patrick Ryan reports that the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay has a new logo (which kinda looks like a Rorschach splotch to me). Details here. ”¦ Reprinted from Friday’s comments: The Blue Jackets will unveil their new uniforms on June 22nd. ”¦ Murvin English notes that the Majestic web site includes a section devoted to National Pro Fastpitch softball uniforms — home, road, and alternate. ”¦ Fun little piece here about history’s worst Bay Area uniforms (with thanks to Brian Catlett). ”¦ Not uni-related, but reader Christopher Falvey has created a baseball-related project that’s really, really cool. Check it out here. ”¦ Rather bizarre volleyball socks here (as spotted by Scot Williams). ”¦ Odd situation in the recent college baseball super regional series between North Carolina and South Carolina, both of which wore “Carolina” across their chests (good observation by Alex Benezra). ”¦ Reds equipment manager Rick Stowe put some pretty big expectations on rookie pitcher Homer Bailey when assigning him uni No. 34. For details, scroll down to the “Numerology” item at the bottom of this page (nice find by Steven Huelskamp). ”¦ In a break with tradition, Notre Dame has announced that they’ll be wearing their very beautiful green jerseys (which in the past have been worn without any advance notification, as a surprise) against USC on October 20th. ”¦ You know those clubs that play “base ball” according to the old rules, with period uniforms, etc.? Turns out there’s something similar for golf. You can’t even use a tee. Full details here. ”¦ Interesting thread on the Chris Creamer board about team-based lottery tickets in Missouri. ”¦ Bizarre multi-tone unis — colored in front, white in back — being worn by the Harlingen South Hawks in the Texas 5A state baseball championship tourney. “Pretty much the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen,” says Nick Zajicek. ”¦ “The NHL can’t catch a break,” writes RJ Charles. “They struck a deal with Sling Media (makers of Sling Box) for a video clip sharing deal, but Sling Media didn’t use the current NHL logo on their web site when announcing the deal.” ”¦ Single-digit pitcher, of sorts, in Friday’s Marlins/Rays game. Tampa was getting blown out, so in the bottom of the 8th they put infielder Josh Wilson on the mound. ”¦ Kevin Kelsey notes that the Women’s College World Series sleeve patch was inconsistently applied by both Arizona and Tennessee, with some players wearing it on the right sleeve and some on the left, as seen here, here, and here. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Big memorabilia sale at Lambeau yesterday, including — get this — a shitload of Packers nameplates (here’s another shot, and dig the tat on that dude’s arm!). ”¦ Matt Ryburn was at Saturday’s Dodgers/Jays game and got good pics of rookie Tony Abreu inviting a fine (and, more importantly, looking like total crap) by wearing his pants under his heels.
Just want to repost this amazing pictorial history of link. Great Uni Photos contained within.
That Rays link says its from May of 06. On the topic on Tony Abreu’s pants, those are the single worst way to wear a pair of baseball pants in my opinion.
Following up on a discussion in the comments from a few weeks ago, I went to bat day at Yankee Stadium again yesterday and the bats were handed out to the kids before the game as usual. During the fourth inning break, at Bob Shepard’s request, they all held them up in the air, continuing a tradition that is at least 40 years old.
That link for the Rays not changing their uniform and name is over a year old. They have submitted the paperwork to MLB for name and uniform change next season. I live in St. Pete and am a die hard D-Rays fan, so I’m still up in the air about the change. I still think they have one of the best unis in baseball, just cant quite understand why the green hats and black helmets?
Never have been a fan of the red Braves alternate jerseys, but they’d improve if players would hike their britches and wear link.
Not sure if anyone saw this (it was buried in the Saturday newspaper), but Al Roker put his foot in his mouth regarding the whole 2012 Olympic logo design……

While watching the Mets-Tigers series this weekend I notice a few things.
1. link appears to be wearing last years BP cap on the bench but he did not go through the trouble of blacking out the white piping on the brim.
2. The link appear to sport the normal raised “D” but the lines that go horizontal appear to be flat…don’t know why this is.
3. If I ever went to link I would bring an umbrella…who the hell wants bird poop dropping onto their hot dog? We may fight on mustard or ketchup but I think we can all agree the feces is not the condiment of choice.
4. Oh, yeah…did anyone else notice that the “D” on their link is different than the “D” on their link? [sarcasm]

Were they mini bats or full length bats?
Paul: Thanks for the shout-out to baseballrace.com…
I love green as a color, and wish more teams used all of the varieties of green that do look good.
But, am I the only one here that thinks the Tampa Devil Rays green is really not that attractive?
Something about it… just does not look like an major league color… looks more like a college color.
You don’t like purple, but I do. Now, we can both agree the RED jerseys the Braves wore yesterday are retina-scarring, right?

I also noticed Kenny Rogers with last year’s BP hat. (That white brim was a glaring stand out) I guess no one cares what he wears since he hasn’t pitched yet this year. Let’s see what happens when he gets on the mound.
Paul observed last Oct. that Kenny was wearing the BP hat then also. (The links don’t work though)

One of the greatest things I saw this year was a Lacrosse Official wearing black stirrups under white socks. I wish I had gotten a picture.

Another Carolina-Carolina uni note. South Carolina has some logo-creep, with Russell Athletic logos on the right breast and right sleeve, which are both visible just about all the time, especially when batting.
Couldn’t find a batting picture, but pic # 5 in this gallery shows the locations.
link
Thankfully, the Tar Heels (a/k/a “Carolina”) and their swoosh put an end to this.
UNC-Chapel Hill and U of South Carolina always wear CAROLINA on their baseball unis. It’s an age old debate over who is the REAL Carolina. UNC showed them this weekend. They had to make up a rain-delayed final 2 1/2 innings on Sunday before the final game. UNC wore their dreaded black jerseys only for this shortened appearance during the super regionals, I’m guessing to fulfill an agreement with Nike. They had their name on the back of these black jerseys–the first time I’ve ever seen them with names on any unis. They did not have names when they wore the black tops for the first time on May 15, or in the ACC tournament. With the numbers riding so low, it made the black jerseys look even weirder when they were nameless.

Well hey there, I’m a St. Petersburger, too! And please, for those who are supposed to be so attentive to unis, it’s TAMPA BAY, not Tampa. I have yet to see a unit that says simply TAMPA. They don’t even play in Tampa. They play here in St. Petersburg. Regional names suck.

That’s not what I was saying. He was wearing last years BP cap during REGULAR SEASON games LAST year but he colored in the white piping on the brim. THIS YEAR he’s wearing last years BP cap during REGULAR SEASON games (even though he’s not playing) but has not colored in the piping.
The observation is not that he’s wearing the BP cap (which we knew he was last year), it’s that he has decided to forgo the colorization process (is that even a term?).
Was watching Yankees-Pirates yesterday and during a few shots of the Yankee dugout, you could clearly that the cast on Doug Mientkiewicz’s (sp?) wrist has been rather interestingly decorated. Anyone want to make my day with some screen captures (I believe it was right after one of A-Rod’s HRs)?
When I played high school football back in 84-87ish (oy) the refs still had the black ‘nameplate’ with their position (field judge, back judge, umpire, etc) and those were pretty much always velcro so that they could switch positions if need be.
(My freshman team also inherited the varsity’s old inside-painted Maxpro shell leather pad helmets – really cool looking but super uncomfortable).
I played lacrosse for an eternity (mostly in DC/MD/VA) and never saw a single official with a number ever.
Those referee numbers are just like the ones used in Japanese high school baseball for the players. Everyone gets a blank uniform with some velcro spots on the back, and then only the 16 guys (or 18, 20, etc.) who are playing in the day’s game get to put the numbers on. The numbers always correspond to positions, so getting to wear the “ace number” 1 every game is the sign of a star pitcher. Why don’t they just sew numbers on everyone’s backs? Because, in general, teams don’t cut players, so you could have over 100 kids on some of the bigger baseball teams. Of course, many of them never play.

Be happy you’re not a soccer official. USSF referees have four different colors (yellow, black, red, blue) and two different sleeve lengths to choose from, in order to not conflict with either team or the goalkeepers. So, that’s eight different jerseys I may have to take with me to the field. All soccer referee uniforms have a velcro patch on one pocket so you can move your patch from jersey to jersey.
link
If you do college games, that’s an entirely different link They even have socks with different color stripes to match the color shirt you are wearing. So that’s another eight jerseys and four pairs of socks! (Plus a slightly different pair of shorts).
And there are states for high school games that don’t use either of these uniform systems. Some will use the USSF jerseys but insist on versions that don’t have the USSF shoulder logo. Some still use the old school black with white collar jersey.
link
And some states (shudder), make soccer officials wear the zebra stripe, which is the one way in soccer to convince everyone you don’t know what you’re doing.

As a former soccer referee, I totally understand. In Canada we don’t even have a “standard” vendor, so someone wearing the neon Adidas yellow clashes mightily with someone wearing a deeper golden yellow.
I kinda like the way soccer mixes up the referee look. From a uni-spotter point of view, it just means more cool stuff to obsess over :)
Ninja Warrior happens to be one of the best shows on TV right now (at least since Sopranos has ended). It seems like the show has a pretty large following in Japan. I wonder why no one (Nike, etc.) has stepped in to sponsor the elite athletes?
Has there been any mention of “Dr. Suess Night” at the minor league Lake Elsinore Storm on June 4th. All the players were wearing Suess inspired striped socks. The only mention and photo I found were on link
-Steve!
I e-mailed the Boston Bruins beat writer, asking if they would be unveiling the new uni’s soon and if there would be a lot of change, and this was his response:
New unis * should be unveiled
soon and I would not worry about their changing drastically from the B’s
traditional look.
Not sure what that means, but I did ask if they’d conform to a template, and he made no mention of it. I realize that he may not know much at all, but thought I’d ask anyway.
Watching the Red Sox v. Diamondbacks this weekend, and Eric Byrnes is a disgrace to look at with the top 2 buttons on his jersey open. Even my girlfriend who couldn’t care less about uniforms agrees.

I have seen Ninja Warrior many times and have wondered why there is almost zero logo creep. Not even Japanese companies getting in on it. Is it still true that only one man has ever completed all four rounds of Ninja Warrior successfully? I think Under Armour should step in.

In MLB Shop, they have hats still have hats for sale that are last years. ANd i know they can come in the same style as the new caps because they have the Diamondbacks new colors in the old caps. Perhaps the players can have that choice?? I’m really not sure, just a suggestion.
I’ll still take the link new athletics logo over the old one. The old one was overly plain and falling out of favor in the athletics department. The University will still use the old logo for all other aspects, including business cards and letterhead.
did anyone else notice the problems the US had witht he gold cup patches this weekend? I noticed against Guatemala that many of the patches were falling off (they were clearly ironed on). A pretty big embarassment to be hosting a tournament and use the cheap iron ons…
This eBay item has confused me. It’s a Dave Cochrane 1992 Seattle Mariners game-worn jersey. Looks legit enough, right? Here’s the thing–I can find no evidence anywhere that the Mariners ever wore a jersey of this style that said “SEATTLE”. Everything I turn up indicates that both the home and road jersey from those years said “MARINERS”.

Was this a rare alternate or something? A prototype? A BP jersey?

Bizarre multi-tone unis — colored in front, white in back — being worn by the Harlingen South Hawks in the Texas 5A state baseball championship tourney. “Pretty much the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen,†says Nick Zajicek.
Those dark-in-front, white-on-back baseball jerseys immediately had me thinking of the 1999 BYU home football jerseys, which were white on the front and blue on the back and sleeves. I looked for photos but came up empty-handed. Perhaps someone more resouceful than I will have more success. The Cougars did change again the next season in response to an NCAA rule forbidding that kind of uniform design. Now we need to get the NCAA on Oregon’s case.
In college or high school, I agree that sort of design is a little hard on the eyes (and a competitive problem since in most sports jersey color is how teammates identify each other).

thats actually NOT what hes saying. hes saying people are buying Beckham 23 jerseys, except theyre Galaxy jerseys. This goes back to Beckham being a brand. By mentioning the ‘beckham 23″ hes noting that this is what is of importance, not the name on the front ie Galaxy.
I have a tidbit of information (as opposed to my usual bits of randomness) to toss in on the practice of snap-on numbers, though unfortunately I don’t have any pictures on me. But I went to a 6-A football high school in North Alabama, which usually meant that you had a HUGE roster of players. But an even larger depth chart was that of the Freshman team when I played; we essentially had two middle school teams combining into one. On top of that, the freshman team naturally only had access to the hand-me-down varsity jerseys.
But the problem was that there wasn’t a full set of numbers, just a few sets of duplicates. Our Freshman and varsity coaches insisted on each player having his own number for inventory purposes. So to fix the problem, the school paid to have new number’s screen printed on some thin sheet of PVC, like they make hospital shower curtains out of, that (kind of) matched the color of the jersey. Some the number ‘patches’ were sewn on, but the rest were just snap-ons and were given to the guys that didn’t see much playing time on game days. And it was pretty funny because whoever was in charge of this operation didn’t take player sizes into account when reassigning the jersey numbers. So, and this happened a lot, a #88 receiver’s jersey could become a new, #67 lineman’s jersey. I remember going through the equipment room one day and found the old #99 jersey, which was the smallest size of that set, and it had a #75 snapped to it. In those cases, it was fun to watch the numbers consistently pop off and dangle like a bib, even though the guys wearing them weren’t doing anything but patrolling the sidelines.
Anyway, sorry for giving you guys my life story just now(I’m long-winded, obviously). I just found the topic to be pretty interesting. But after all that, I’m thinking that I’ll just go back to my randomness for a while. Starting now: Remember these link…?

There is consistency in the WCWS (Women’s College World Series) patches. It’s based on how the players hit … right-handed batters have the patch on their left sleeve, left-handed batters have the patch on their right sleeve.
The theory is that the “front shoulder” will get the most air time on TV. All teams are instructed to mark the lefty batters when they drop off their uniforms for patch application upon arrival in Oklahoma City.

Hey, I have been wanting to ask this here because I am sure someone knows the answer, and after a quick search through the message boards and the Umpire topic thread, I couldn’t find the answer. Reading the latest ESPN the mag, there is a picture of Lou Pinella yelling at the ump from last weekend, and I noticed that the umpires are still wearing the wool hats. Was there ever a plan to have the umpire hats be the performance 5950? Did they get the choice not to wear it, or were they just not going to be a part of the upgrade?
Thanks in advance for helping me figure this one out, I must have just missed it.

The person that posted that story is a very, very anti-Tampa Bay baseball person in the first place. His rush to crush anything positive about the D-Rays is apparent with that post. If it is negative, he will say it or post it. He thinks that anything baseball in the Tampa Bay area is bad…except for his Yankees conducting Spring Training there.
His constant droning on about how bad the D-Rays are just gets old, as he is a one-trick pony. he didn’t even acknowledge that he was wrong in posting that year-old story, just sort of a an “oh well”…
He considers the D-Rays and the organization of the last two season under Sternberg the same as the D-Rays and the organization under Namoli. And it is not. It takes time to undo those 8 years under Vince. But his solution is to jerk the franchise away from the Bay area. How would he like it if they jerked the Yankees away from him? I bet he wouldn’t like it at all.
I wish that he would just keep his mouth shut with all of his negativity.

Lalas is saying in his column that when the Galaxy originaly signed Beckham, he was washed out, and they were just bringing him over as a marketing ploy to sell soccer to Americans, because Americans know that he is considered one of the best players in the world, and watching him play in MLS, Americans wouldn’t be able to tell that he is past his prime. But now that Beckham has regained his form and he’s back “on top of the world again,” people around the world will once again be wearing “Beckham 23” jerseys, except that instead of being Real Madrid jerseys, they will be Galaxy jerseys. From the tone of the colomn, I don’t think that his point is that “Beckham 23” is more important than “Galaxy”. I think the point he’s making from that last sentence is that he is happy/proud that the best footballer in the world will be playing in America, and that people the world over wearing beckham 23 galaxy jerseys will gain some stature for MLS and America in the football community. Lalas is not reporting that the Japanese are bootlegging beckham 23 galaxy jerseys, or that they are currently available for sale. He is simply using imagery to make a point.
In terms of why you can’t yet buy a Beckham 23 Galaxy jersey, I don’t know whether or not the Galaxy are allowed to. But another reason you can’t buy one yet is probably because Beckham won’t ever appear in the team’s current uniform. The Galaxy link when Beckham joins the team in July.

Nice find … that IS confusing. Maybe we can get Paul to chime in.
My $0.02 — I’m leaning towards “prototype,” or at least “early-season screwup,” even though the M’s had been wearing that design since ’87 and there really shouldn’t have been any bugs to work out. No one was really wearing alternates in ’92, and it’s obviously not Seattle’s link from back then. That just leaves “counterfeit,” but why in the hell would you fake a Dave Cochrane jersey? Why not Ken Griffey Jr?
I find it interesting that the tag is on the inside of the jersey, not the outside, and there doesn’t appear to be a Rawlings logo on the sleeve. I could have sworn Russell was making MLB jerseys by then, but I could easily be wrong.
Oh, and I didn’t realize Cochrane drifted into “abscurity” after being “tarded.” Kinda feel sorry for the guy.

It sounds like lacrosse officials’ uniforms aren’t as bad as those of soccer officials. My paches are held on with velcro. I put white velcro on the white stripes and black velcro on the black stripes. So far, I haven’t lost any patches. There are variations in flag patches including size and border color. Numbers on the back should be worn for all college games (varsity and club), but are not worn for NCAA playoff games. For two-digit numbers some people have two numbers on one placard and other have each number on its own placard. I don’t think three-digits numbers are far off: I’d hate to see what three placards look like across someone’s back.
Speaking of three-digit numbers, when a team has repeats of numbers I usually tell them to add some tape in the form of a one to the jersey. There are rules against repeated numbers, but nothing (in the rules I use) that states the numbers must be whole numbers less than 100.
It was interesting. During the cubs-astros game. Carlos Zambrano was pitching and the scrolling ad behind hme plate had his face on it. The logo the cubs use for the on-deck circle is the old logo from the pre red days. felix pie is wearing number 20 because mike fontenot is wearing the 17 pie wore when he was called up earlier in the season.

It just came to me … I will make my first guess as to the new name for The Tampa Bay baseball team … it’s been leaked that they’re trying to change the team colors to blue and yellow for next year, but the name is hush hush. No doubt this is a HORRIBLE name, but it sounds JUST like a name that a board of baseball executives in Florida would come up with:

Watching the Giants go down the tubes to the Jays-Kevin Towers pitching for Toronto. Looks weird to see a #7 on the mound. (IE “Why is the shortstop pitching?”)
What’s the status of the Florida Marlins being renamed to Miami? Maybe the Devil Rays could wait until that renaming occurs, then simply change their name to the Florida Rays.

you’re right! Josh.
I wish I had a picture, but anyone who watched the game today can see that OSU Beavers can do something right. The point that most of the American press has missed is that Beckham will “only” be getting $5 million/season to play for the Galaxy. The other $45 million essentially comes from selling the “Galaxy 23” shirts, other endorsements, etc.
I have no idea if Phil Anschutz is personally guaranteeing some of that $45 million, but if he is, he can afford it.
(FWIW, the “official” salary cap for an MLS team is around $2.2 million. The max salary against the cap is $300,000, although a very few players make more. Too bad the Galaxy have $600,000 of that cap tied up in Beckham and Landon Donovan, because the rest of the team, well, stinks. Beckham is great at what he does, but he and Landycakes won’t win many games by themselves.)

There are very few switch hitters in fastpitch softball. I switch hit sometimes, but never against a left-handed pitcher. In softball, they are nightmares to hit against. As for the left hitter that throw right, if a coach sees that you’re a fast runner they will teach you to slap hit. That was not something I had to worry about as a slow-footed catcher.

They don’t “always” wear Carolina on their unis – at least the real (North) Carolina doesn’t. They have a vest type jersey with the interlocking “NC” logo on the right chest (opposite of where it would normally appear), and I’ve also seen them in a white jersey and the aforementioned black with “Tar Heels” across the front in carolina blue script.
I think both teams deliberately stuck through the series with jerseys that said “Carolina” on the front, except for the conclusion of suspended game two when the Tar Heels wore their black jerseys. I hope we don’t break those out again in Omaha…
