New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: The Padres will be wearing 1972 throwbacks tonight. But one member of the organization has already been wearing the old design: Uni Watch reader Will DeFord, who happens to work in the Padres’ Guest Services department. The team needed someone to model the throwback duds for the local media, so Will, as he put it, “jumped at the chance to wear one of the brightest uniforms I’ve ever seen.” He ended up wearing the uni for several local TV news segments, one of which has been archived here.
Will also took a bunch of photos of the uniform. Here’s his report:
The tag on the pants incorrectly identifies the design as being from 1971 [that year’s uniform looked like this]. The only other problem I had was with the stirrups, which barely show any of the yellow sanitary underneath. Let’s hope that at least Jose Cruz, Jr. will get it right and wear them nice and high.
The rest of the uni is pretty straightforward, except for the cap. As far as I can tell, the cap is actually from ’72-’73 — I believe it was borrowed from someone here in the office, but I’m not sure who. It features an early attempt at the flex-fit style, similar to today’s BP caps. It has a felt-like texture and a cloth-backed leather sweatband [and a pretty cool tag — PL]. I would assume the hats the players will wear will be New Era replicas that won’t even begin to do it justice.
Pretty great stuff. One note about those yellow sanitaries, however: According to the Dressed to the Nines database, the Padres wore yellow sannies at home and on the road in 1972 and then switched to white sannies on the road in ’73. But take a look at that photo of Nate Colbert at the top of this page — he’s wearing white sannies, and the numbers written on his bat refer to the record-setting doubleheader performance that defined his career (5 HR and 13 RBI in one day!), which took place on August 1st, 1972. The photo was presumably taken a day or two after the doubleheader, and the solid-brown cap also indicates that the photo was taken in 1972, which means the Padres didn’t always wear yellow sannies that year after all — yet another useful reminder that we shouldn’t always take these database templates as gospel.
Also: If you look at database illustrations — or, more tellingly, the Colbert photo — you’ll see that the Padres wore a striped elastic waistband in 1972, not belted pants like the throwbacks are apparently using. Tsk-tsk.
Uni Watch News Ticker: More hosiery histrionics: Port St. Joe High School in Florida. There’s even an article about the socks here (as generously forwarded by Mike Edgerley). … Faaaaascinating communiqué from Mike Orr, who writes: “The JV basketball team at my high school — Jordan High in Durham, North Carolina — had a really huge space between their uniform numbers. Check out how wide the space is, especially on No. 54 in the middle. Also, take a look at the guy on the far right on the top row — look how huge the Falcon logo is on the shorts. Obviously, JV usually gets the shite unis, but this probably also means they were at one time the varsity unis.” … Speaking of uni numbers, check out the football-style numbers worn by the old Pittsburgh Hornets (additional pics on this page, with thanks to Michael Roecklein). … Brandon Williams of the 49ers is changing his uniform number (good spot by Pete Bonavita). … Yesterday’s ticker item about Sammy Sosa’s sleeves prompted this report from an inside source with the Rangers: “Sammy did in fact remove the elastic from all of his jerseys. He decided to do so a week or two into the season. As always, we have no idea why. Oh, and take a close look at the shoes he now wears at home. He likes to wear an old model of Easton shoe, but the only ones he has left have a lot of gray on them. So we took a blue paint marker and painted them.” … “South Dakota State University is deciding on a new logo for the Jackrabbits mascot,” writes Dominic J. Litten. “The three choices (and an explanation) are available here. Students, alumni, and staff are being encouraged to voice their opinions, with the final choice to be made next year.” … According to a small item buried within this article, the famous No. 1/8 jersey worn by Eddie Gaedel was borrowed from current Cardinals owner Bill Dewitt Jr., who was a wee tyke a the time (great catch by David Chisholm). … All members of the Indians will wear No. 14 on August 10th. … Amidst all the other Mother’s Day maneuvers, the Arena League will be using a pink-accented football. … Kudos to our friends at CollegeJersey.com, who redesigned their banner ad at the top of the page to match the Uni Watch color scheme.
Outward Bound: Okay, gotta pack, leave a note for the cat-sitter, and then I’m off to the airport. Looking forward to meeting lots of you in Minneapolis and Chicago tonight and tomorrow. And if anyone has any bright ideas about showing up wearing purple, expect to have a drink “accidentally” spilled in your direction.
I go tmy new issue of Sports Illustrated yesterday and in the Book Watch piece it quoted Cleveland Indians manager Howie Traveler talking about uniforms, “just so, bloused in the middle…the way God intended basbeall players to look” instead of all they way down to hs shoes.
I read that and knew I had to share this little gem. “The way God intended baseball players to look.” What a great quote.
They also had a nice feature on Grady Sizemore where he’s got high pants, real eye black, not those cheap strips, but unfortunatly, no real stirups, just solid socks.
In reguards to the SDSU logo, I personally like the 3rd one, but I could do without the unrealistically long tail. Any thoughts?
The socks were the first thing I noticed when I got to the Sizemore article. But not because of how good they looked, but actually because I rarely ever see Grady wearing his socks “like God intended.” I wish he would start doing it more often, that way Ryan Garko, Paul Byrd and Jeremy Sowers aren’t the only ones wearing their pants like they’re supposed to be worn.
Are you sure that Padres cap is real and not a replica? About 10 years ago, I bought a red White Sox cap from a store in Cooperstown from the same period. The store literally makes you feel like time stopped in 1974 (If you’ve been there, you will know what I mean – tons of real retro stuff from all sports). My red Sox cap was also felt, had a sewn/glued-on logo, and an elastic headband in the back. I remember my Sox cap having a naugahyde-like band in the front, not real leather. Just a thought.
If you go to Cooperstown, it’s about 1 block down from the Hall of Fame. The store was run in the past by 2 old ladies (an old cliche’, I know, but too true in this case) and hasn’t changed much since I was a kid (I’m now 34). Never living more than 2 hours form Cooperstown, I go a lot, and I love that store for its timeless quality.

Actually, I’m sure it’s a replica. But it’s a vintage replica.

I enjoyed today’s link description of a purple MP3 player for sale. I figured Paul would concur:
“Purple: full-fledged member of the visible light spectrum, or bastard child of a drunken dalliance between blue and red? Unless you’re a Minnesota Viking, a preteen girl, or Prince, chances are you don’t wear a lot of purple. We can’t recall ever seeing a purple house. No country uses purple in their national flag. There just aren’t many situations where it works. But it’s better than pink.
Leave it so Sony to prove that purple doesn’t work for MP3 players either. They may say their Walkman NW-S705F Digital Music Player is “violetâ€Â, but purple by any other name is still pretty damn vile.”
It appears it is hard to make a rabit look tough.
I personally like any of the link the most, since they actually resemble a Major League Baseball uniform.
I wouldn’t know who in their right mind would show up to a Uni Watch party wearing purple. That reminds me, does anybody remember that funny picture somebody made up of the ultimate ugly uniform? It was purple, had mesh, a Nike logo, and that stupid pattern that all of the Major League pitchers were wearing. And some other very clever items on it. I can’t remember how long ago that was linked here.

None of the three designs are great, but there are enough decent aspects there to make something cool out of it with some tweaking.

I prefer the first design option. It kinda keeps the cartoonish quality of the current logo, but does not go overboard like the third design option.

Yikes, an explosion to my eyes!! Those are hideous. Waayy too busy. Too much to take in so early in the morning…you should give a warning– :O
kudos to college jersey!
ive spent many hours on that site over the past few years.
the stuff is for the most part out of my price range (but based on the fact that it is team issued and game worn, im sure it is of the highest quality, and valued appropriately) and kind of impractical (i wouldnt wear any of the jerseys with jeans or shorts based on the oversized length of the shirts and the shortness of the sleeves).
but to have a retail site like that, with enormous inventory, adjust their banner ad to match the layout of a relatively small blog, thats a great gesture! good for them…
ive also noticed that the distant replays advert has a burgundy background. i dont know if that is done out of design or not, but kudos to them as well for the same. their product catalog is choc full of great stuff too.
always great to see big brother make the little guy look good every so often…
What’s with the streak lines behind those 2 rabbit logos? It looks like the rabbit is crapping out a rainbow!

Reminds me of the situation in Oregom with the school ditching the Donald Duck logo for their current boring “O” logo.
I don’t see any problem with the current SDSU log, but if they’re going to change, for the love of God don’t make it the first “abstract” logo. It’s HORRIBLE!

SDSU Jacks – current mascot/logo link
I think I like option 2 out of the three finalists, but have no problem with the current one. For example, I like the old Padres’ swinging link , the original link logo for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the late-40’s but now politically-incorrect link of the Indians, etc. I never saw the need to have your mascot/logo be scary or mean-looking – no one ever won a game on the field because they won the logo match up.

Why do some comments get erased again? I had two more comments after my #18, both which had links, and they both disappeared. Anyway, I like the second rabbit for SDSU the best, but have no problems with their current “cartoony” rabbit.
The BAFL is totally amateur so some teams rely on individuals purchasing kit or it gets “borrowed” from their college teams, so it’s difficult for people to get everything matching. However, part of the game management audit now grades teams on matching equipment.
Ben at CollegeJersey.co.uk does a great job in kitting out several clubs. Wilson also sponsor the league so a couple of clubs now have wilson unis.

I think too many links is reason #1. I don’t know though, I’ve been posting here since day one and I’ve only had 1 comment erased, and I had 5 or 6 links in it. Maybe I’m just lucky.
On the SDSU subject, is their official nickname the Jackrabbits? If so, with “JACKS” on the jersey, they’ve gone the way of the (Devil) Rays and D(iamond)Backs in using abbreviations.

I don’t know if it is universal, but it certainly makes sense to me. Beavers build dams. Engineers build dams (and other things).
The wiffleball league here in the Twin Cities (which goes way over the top with their website production and league structure… Bud Selig should take a lesson from these guys. It’s crazy.) have a team named the Padres who are harkening back to the 70’s San Diego club. You can view a pic link if you click on the “On Deck” link on their Flash pics on the home page. A few of them also wear the vintage retro hats as well.
Paul, I am just a little unclear about something. You said Will took photos of the uniform, and included the shot of link. But then you commented that the cap was a replica. So, I am not sure if you are saying that this is the design that the Padres will wear with the 1972 set.
I hope not, because the team never wore the design shown in that replica cap. The yellow part appears to go around the head somewhat. That is not right. The yellow part really should come all the way down to the brim, and should not be present on the sides of the cap.
Here is link in 1974 (but sporting the cap in question); link link of Randy Jones in 1977 (but, again, with the same cap). The Padres wore this cap design (with the addition of orange in 1980) through 1984.
Anyway, if the Padres were going to do a throwback day, I would have preferred to see the nice link set that McCovey is wearing in the shot above.
I still say that the team never should hve gone away from that yellow-front cap (without the orange added), or from the yellow-and-black colour scheme. Just as the Astros should never have gone away from their link that they wore from 1971 through 1982. Even if those teams altered their unis, I think that all future uni designs should have been done with those colours, and in coordination with those caps.
Anyway, just a pet peeve of mine, and not just in baseball. I think it is a real shame when a team abandons link for link. But, I guess having an old design that is better than the current one is what makes seeing link so much fun.
I’m still waiting for a North American team to use a European “7”. It has a strike across the leg, it would look neat, personally. With the leagues crossing the ocean and exposing their respective sport more commonly, adding the different style for the trip would be appropriate. I’m Italian and dig the Euro 7.

Broker75, I also like that 7 and always draw it that way — in the US, it seems like math and science types tend to use that 7 so that it isn’t mistaken for a 1. Same with the line in the Z.
I think I once saw a minor league baseball jersey with it, but I’ve long since forgotten the team. What’s that yellow-and-blue-clad Serie A team that used it? They had a yellow square on the back with a blue number in it.
(And thinking about that 7 again, I’ve never seen it in handwriting before about the 1930s, and my pet theory is that the influx of German-speaking scientists before WWII led the students in their classes to take up their writing habits so as to leave the impression of ‘see what an Einstein-like genius I am!’ …of course, this could be totally wrong…)

I wore stirrups last night (for the first time since I was a kid) to one of my softball games. We got our first win of the season, coincidence? Also one of the complaints with them is that they are uncomfortable. I didn’t find this to be the case at all. I could barely tell the difference between them and the socks I usually wear. I think I will definitely be wearing them to every game now.
For reasons unknown, all of my posts are now being eaten, regardless of whether I include a link.
Despite knowing that this will never be read, I must weigh in on the SDSU rabbit. The old cartoon rabbit is fantastic, and all of the news ones are terrible. Cartoony logos are almost always better than ones that try to demonstrate a mean attitude.

Yikes, an explosion to my eyes!! Those are hideous. Waayy too busy. Too much to take in so early in the morning…you should give a warning– :O
I’m actually a fan of the Pumas, liking the NASCAResque numbers (Unique, yet still very readable), and the nice black and orange colors. However, the Spartans uni has that nasty red and grey color scheme that makes the text on the front of their uniform unreadable from 4 feet out, and “Block Numbers”. I know I am in the minority here, but I personally prefer smooth, curved numbers rather than blocky numbers.
As for the discussions of recent days involving “sanitaries” historically being white to keep the feet and legs … well … “sanitary” … from the chemicals found in the colorful stirrups, I find it interesting that the Padres old santitaries would be mustard yellow!

The official story behind MIT’s mascot choice was that the beaver is the animal after man most destructive of the environment nature’s engineer.
Other options at the time of adoption were the kangaroo and elephant.
BTW, note that the team name is “Engineers”. Doubly so for the women’s teams.

In nature, the beaver dams create small ponds and lakes that are a very important part of the natural eco-system. The water supports many types of wildlife, mammals, plants and amphibians.
The removal of the trees used in the dams is also important by allowing sunlight to reach the woodland floor which generates new growth.
It is when the ponds disturbs the humans world (overflow on roads, farmland, etc) that the beaver is declared destructive. As with all animals, please consider their value from other perspectives than just the human view of the world.
I’m lucky enough to be sitting link tonight at the A’s game, I’ll see if I can find any interesting Uni stuff to report on…

I’m guessing that small bit of purple brings Paul money so to him it’s a green ad.
Jay – I was being facetious.
FWIW, there shouldn’t be any argument that the beaver does alter its environment to a greater extent than most animals.

Indians and Mariners in order to make up some lost games will play a doubleheader in September. Each team will be the home team for one game. Wonder if they will alternate unis for each game?
Also makes for one of the most unique “home and home series” ever played.

Good Uni Watch article today. I think part of the reason Clemens’ Toronto jersey looks unusual is because it’s a jersey that’s not in use today, and was only used for 7 or 8 years. When I think of Blue Jays, it’s either the current or the World Series years.
Other notes-
The card of Pedro Martinez as a Dodger really makes me appreciate the raised logos caps have now. I had a Dodger hat like his in the early 90s and the raised logos are so much cooler than the 2-D look.
The end-of-career uni cameos may look strange for the unis but also for how old some of the players look. And every picture of Nellie Fox I’ve ever seen has him with an link

Jon in SLC, too bad you couldn’t have a work-related reason to come to the best bar in the nation, according to Esquire. I am curious to see who else comes, or if it will just be me, Paul, Teebz, and Natron (has he confirmed he’s going) drinking the beer and eating the meats. I have a hunch that we don’t have many readers from Utah besides you. Anyone?
That rabbit scares me.
I can’t stand those striped socks at Port. St. Joe. I went to Tampa Prep during the years when we lost to PSJ 3 times. If ever an article of an opposing team’s uniform could have been in our heads, those socks were it. Those striped socks were fairly new at the time and hadn’t caught on too much with other sports and/or schools, so every time we saw the socks we thought of them – and thought of losing state championships to them. I’m not sure there are other examples of the psychological impact of striped socks, but I can assure you those socks helped beat us.

Great ESPN column today. As a Browns fan was surprised to see link linklink of late season cameos.
The other day we talked about free giveaways at the ball park/stadium. Today in the Salt Lake Tribune had link about the odd baby blue crowd at Game 2 on Wednesday night.
Also in that article was this:
Remember those light-blue jerseys, the ones the Jazz broke out while ending their playoff road losing streak and winning Game 7 of their first-round series in Houston?
Yeah, they worked so magically that . . . well, we’ll have to wait and see.
Assistant trainer and equipment manager Brian Zettler guessed that there’s about a 50-50 chance the team will wear the same jerseys tonight for Game 3 – their first road game since the Game 7 triumph against the Rockets – but that’s a decision that won’t be made by the players until today.
I figured this would be the best place to ask the following question- how do I get my 5950 cap to shrink? The new material means that my true size (7 and 1/16) may be unreachable, now that 7 is still too small but 7 1/8 won’t shrink down because of the “shrink resistant fabric.” Is this true? Has anybody heard of ballplayers shrinking their caps down this year?

I assume your joking. Yes you can, there is a pretty good nightlife scene in Salt Lake. Some good link, link, link, link, link and link.
But I can understand, if you’ve never been here you might think it’s backwards. But it’s not that bad. Similar to Denver (maybe smaller). And it’s been at least a week since I’ve seen a horse and buggy.
In the ESPN list, you forgot that Steve Carlton started out with the Cardinals.
I just read today’s article and Alex English popped into my mind. He was the athlete in the 1988 movie “Amazing Grace and Chuck”. Remember? The plot was about this kid who quits sports to protest nuclear weapons ( regular moonbat before his time). The story gets out and the first big athlete to follow the kid’s example is Amazing Grace played by Alex English. Eventually all the Soviet and American athletes stop playing, yadi yadi yada…
Well Alex’s character was a Boston Celtic and Alix played for the Celts one game in the pre season to get some movie shots of him as a Celtic. I did a quick gis search and can find no images. It technically doesn’t count in regards to today’s column, but would have been a good pic as Alex spent his formative years with the Nuggets.

How they get around smoking in bars is with a “private club” rule, it also applies to clubs that do Alcohol but no food. Basically you pay a cover usually 3 to 7 bucks if there’s a band or something, then that’s it. There ar no rules other than last call is a little early at 1:00 a.m. and if your at a restuarant that also has a bar they may want you to order food if your drinking. At the true clubs/bars, there are no rules (shots are measured instead of eyeballed). I go out almost every weekend with friends and I have never been cut-off or had any different experience than when I go back home to Ventura, CA.

MN is passing a state-wide no smoking in public places not even private clubs ban. Or, I am pretty sure it’ll pass. It works in CA, the pro-ban people say. Um, they don’t have sub-zero temps in CA.
As someone who has three or four cigarettes when I drink (which is once a month at most), this pisses me off. Hospitals, government buildings, airports and even restaurants–ok. Bars? Whole ‘nother subject. The ban would even include outdoor enclosures. I better get my smoking and drinking in before October.
Uni-related: Chris Carter is a Viking. I just ignore the other phases of his career.
Just to clarify, I only smoke when I drink. The two just seem to go hand-and-hand.
Looking at CollegeJersey.com, I love link, but I am not paying $400 for it. Or even $399.
On the page 2 article you mention M. Jordan as a cross sport cameo, how could you not mantion him for the late career washington wizards cameo?
Minna, the Private club thing is how they get around the smoking ban here. The last time I bought one it was $12 for a year and they comp’d my first drink. So it’s not too bad. Most places just take your ID, write down you name charge a cover and you move on.
Now on to other things, I have tickets through the Dodger front office, directly behind Frank McCourts’ seats at the game vs. the Cardinals on Tuesday. The front office is trying to set up a photo op/handshake for my son who’s 7, so he can meet his two favorite players, Pujols and Garciaparra. It’s like 50/50 on meeting the players, but I’ll get whatever photo’s I can for the Uni Watch faithful.

Bah, Minna!
Carter had a falling out with coach Buddy Ryan and was a surprise cut following the pre-season. Carter later admitted that Ryan released him because of alcohol and drug abuse, and credits his former coach with helping him turn his life around as a result. Ryan’s famous quote regarding Carter’s contribution to the team lives in infamy “All he does is catch touchdowns.”

I agree, I played hockey with Trottier Jr. and he felt his dad’s time with the Pens was just as important to him as with the Isles because his role was very different.
Side not, Trottier Jr. said Jager would come over to their house after practice so the two of them could play SEGA and Jager always had to be the Pens so he could be himself.

It’s been reported here for a couple of days that Jose Mesa changed his jersey to #50. I know that a couple people have been asking why and here is the answer from the Tigers web site.
Mesa thrives at 50: After a hard-luck opening month, Jose Mesa was looking for any way to change his fortunes. That included his jersey number.
Mesa began the season wearing No. 94, the reverse of the No. 49 he’d worn for years. On Wednesday, he was wearing No. 50 when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The number has no significance to him, other than the fact that it’s not 94.
“I got hit with 94,” joked Mesa, who retired the only batter he faced Thursday as well. “I just asked [clubhouse manager Jim Schmakel] what was available [in terms of numbers]. So far, so good. I think 94 is too heavy on my back.”
The last Tiger to wear No. 50 was Miller during his late-season stint last year.
Here in Lexington, KY you can’t smoke indoors either. You can drink outdoors but you have to be sitting down and I think whatever you are drinking has to be in a plastic cup. You also have to rub your stomach and pat your head at the same time.

The Tavernacle is a fun place. Dueling Piano’s and people sing along to all the requests. Sorry to be off topic for all of you who don’t care about the Salt Lake’s nightlife (basically everyone).
Ian I am a huge Dodgers fan as well. Same era as you. Sax, Hershiser, Pedro Guerrero, Mike Marshall, Fernando, Gibby – good times. It’s been a while since I was at a game. I took my wife to the Fernando Tatis link in the same inning (off of Chan Ho Park) game. She didn’t get the significance.

Joe Drennan – I live in Texas and you can’t walk outside with a drink here either. I was on South Padre Island once and that has no open-container laws, of course, it’s almost Mexico. Damn alcohol laws.

Ian K., that’s usually true of Texas, but clearly you haven’t been to Greenville Avenue in Dallas for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Outdoor drinking on the street is not only allowed, it’s practically encouraged. By the next day, however, all the normal rules return.

I don’t have a wife to not Get It (TM) (uniforms or baseball in general) but I did have a high school girlfriend who memorized the Opening Day roster of the 1997 Dodgers for my benefit.
Also, I attended the Dodgers-Rangers game in Arlington on September 2, 1997, the first year of interleague play. However, the game didn’t really go as I had planned. link
Matthew S., I heard good things about this year’s Greenville Ave parade, since St. Patrick’s Day was a Saturday this year I’m sure it was overly raucous. Do people still drink outside at 10am when 3/17 is a Tuesday though?
So far this Fort Worth-to-downtown Dallas commute sucks. I’m sure I’ll cave in soon and move east.
Paul,
Like the ESPN column. I know you’re not an NHL guy so much, but how can you leave link off the early career list.
I know this is waaaayyyy late, but did anyone mention Bob Cousy’s late-career cameo with the Cincinnati Royals? I believe he was the coach at the time, and activated himself for at least part of the season. I thought someone had mentioned it– maybe Paul couldn’t find a pic.

Anyone?

Not in Utah any more, but I did do an 8-year stretch before moving to Colorado in ’98. Can’t say I miss it.

So you get to deal with the traffic of I-30 or I-20 everyday? Wow. Do you have any hair left on your head? Dallas is a cooler town anyway.
Not sure, this year was the first year I went, so I’m not too sure how it works on a Monday or Tuesday.

I don’t know if this was mentioned already, but I got another email similar to the Team USA Baseball one Paul wrote about a week or so back. It was voting on four different logos to use for the MLB Network to launch in ’09.

Enjoy.
Ok. Cutting up posts again. Part one.
In response to post #123. Anthony V., NEVER happened. Chris Carter was only a Vikings player.
Jon in SLC, private clubs used to be exempt. The new law will not exempt them. I don’t know how that works, but that’s what the bill states.
You can drink outdoors here, which is fine in the summer, but a bummer in the winter–even with the outdoor fires that bars have. Controlled, of course.
Less than two hours until the TCUWP! I am still undecided as to whether I am going to wear purple.
I wish I had link to wear tonight.

I’ll be a game-time decision. I’m in town (yay, Eagan) but I’m being fought over. That, and I forgot my #$%& Caps jersey. Bah.
50-50 for after 9 or so, maybe.
Ok. I can’t post from SI, either. Pacman Jones got ticketed for speeding again, and he didn’t have his license with him. Not smart to do when you’re trying to convince the Commish you’ve turned over a new leaf.
Joe D., I am ignoring everything pink. It makes life much easier.
TD, welcome home, man. Tell everyone you know that uni-watching (and drinking beers) takes priority over everything else. That ought to do the trick. Hope to see ya tonight.
Minna
dear you are wrong. Chris Carter is link but I’ll allow you for the pro game. I still can’t belive that PL left T Hoffman off the list with the Reds, which is who he came up with. and Paul Kornerko too (sp?). oh well
Hideous red vest alert in Pittsburgh Pirates game tonight.
No MJ in a Wizards jersey? I think of the NYR when I see Gretz’ name or the Raiders when I see Jerry Rice? I would put both of those on the end career side.
Talking about the cross sports jersey, there was a Nike commericial that had Andre Agassi playing for the Red Sox and Urlacher and Vick playing for the Avalanche.
Wait a minute, you’re going to be in Chicago tonight?
Ryan Church of the Nationals tore the back of his pants sliding into third against the Marlins

I hope not, because the team never wore the design shown in that replica cap. The yellow part appears to go around the head somewhat. That is not right. The yellow part really should come all the way down to the brim, and should not be present on the sides of the cap.
No. I’m not sure when they were designed, they might have been for a Philly redesign that was eventually cancelled.

That’s why I don’t think Osborne Earl Smith should be on that list. Ozzie spent the first four years of his career with the Padres. Quoting Paul’s criteria for the Early-Career Cameo: ” This type of cameo appearance involves a brief, long-forgotten stint with a team early in the player’s career”.
I don’t know about anyone else, but to me four years is not “brief”.
Oh man, Jake Peavy looks BADASS tonight in his Padres throwback, coupled with stirrups. Love it!!
Stay Classy San Diego
It’s kind of strange to see the Cards wear road grays with red caps. These Cardinals throwbacks look like they’re from the late 80’s to early 90’s.
It looks like the Vikings use a purple football during their spring practices. Check out the picture of Adrian Peterson in this link:

Jazz are wearing their columbia-ish blue road unis again. The luck seems to have run out of them however.

I had a replica Padres batting helmet from about 1977 and it looked more like the helmet they were wearing last night than the picture on the front of the 1980 yearbook. Maybe the helmet looked diferently in the early ’70s.

“Dressed To The Nines” is correct… Until last night, the only time I’ve ever seen white around the classic “birds on the Bat” logo was on link, jackets, etc.
Should Larry Csonka’s stint with the Memphis Southmen of the old World Football League have been included in the ESPN column as a late-career cameo?
I don’t quite know how to do this so apoloigies in advance if toes are stepped on. Isn’t the weekend open thread usually open by now? did everyone get bombed last night in MPLS? where is everybody?
With reference to the remark about Deion Sanders cutting his uniform sleeves short in honor of Jackie Robinson, even though Robinson didn’t do it–Robinson may not have, but other Brooklyn Dodgers did.
There’s a new photo essay book out about the Dodgers in the 40s and 50s called “Through a Blue Lens” (or something like that). The cover photo shows the team walking across the field at Ebbets Field. Gil Hodges and Jim Gilliam are wearing significantly shorter sleeves; Don Drysdale can be seen wearing normal length sleeves.
It technically doesn’t count in regards to today’s column, but would have been a good pic as Alex spent his formative years with the Nuggets.
yes! this is a very belated response, but i was just perusing some of the espn columns i hadn’t read yet, and thought of the same thing while reading the cameo stuff. i distinctly remember a news story back in ’86 or ’87 that covered this very event. he wore the name “smith” on his jersey. i remember wanting to see the movie, just to watch alex english in a celtics uniform. i’ haven’t had any luck finding a picture either.
