Monday Morning Uni Watch

pants.jpg

Remember that old “This is the NFL” marketing slogan? Yesterday it was officially changed to “This is the NFL?” The league was barely recognizable yesterday, especially in Buffalo and Denver, where we finally got a look at the long-promised cold-weather black officiating pants (although, interestingly, the chain gangs were left to shiver in the standard high-water whites). I’m opposed to the slacks, natch, since NFL zebras are pretty much the only species on the planet that still knows how to wear knickers and striped socks just right. Still, the bellhop look was good for novelty value, as you can see here, here, here, here, here, and here. The operative comparison would appear to be NHL officials, or maybe just Cooperalls (or, okay, Foot Locker proles). Toss in this season’s black-undersided sleeves — an idea that appears to have been borrowed from the NHL — and it’s clear that someone in the NFL front office has been watching a lot of hockey. Remains to be seen if the black slacks are here to stay, but they should at least get rid of the pockets, so we don’t end up with unseemly ultra-casual scenes like this and this.

Other NFL developments:

• Is there anything stupider than a team cultivating the nickname Big Blue and then going out and wearing red (more views here, here, and here)?

• Actually, yeah, there is (additional hilarity here, here, and here). Not quite as appealing on the gridiron as it is here, right? This is suddenly looking pretty good by comparison.

• And then there was the scene in New Orleans, where the Saints went for the blackout motif — even the coach. Not my bag (big surprise), but it was at least barely tolerable for players who showed some semblance of white socks (here’s another example). But for players who went with low whites, the unitard effect was brutal, especially given the piping-free pants (compare, say, this, which at least provides some contrasting details).

The weekend also featured plenty of non-NFL developments. Por ejemplo:

• Georgia Tech wore blue on Saturday. Jersey patch-o-rama, too.

• Florida International’s road uniforms, which look like this, got lost on the way to Wisconsin, so the Badgers provided the Golden Panthers with plain black unis (including gratuitous Adidas logo creep, natch) for Saturday’s game in Madison. (Further details here.)

• In an apparently unprecedented development, Marko Jaric checked into Friday night’s with his jersey on backwards, necessitating a quick adjustment (and, in turn, a delay of game citation).

• In Oakland, the Warriors performed a public service on Saturday night by holding one of their periodic revivals of history’s greatest basketball uniform, complete with the cable car uni numbers, low-rider nameplates, and retro warm-up outfits.

• Throwbacks were also on display in Denver, where the Nuggets dressed up as the ABA’s Denver Rockets (here’s another view, and don’t miss that left-leg patch). Gotta like the retro-logo headband, although it’d’ve been better if they’d used this one (yes, purple and all). Nice additional details and storytelling here (with thanks to Matt Thompson for the link).

• Still more throwbacks last night in San Antonio, as the Spurs wore their old George Gervin-era silver unis, resulting in one o those rare non-Lakers games where neither team wore white.

• And the Reds unveiled their new uniforms on Friday evening. For those of you who don’t check in here over the weekend, there’s full coverage in Saturday’s entry.

Friendly reminder: The deadline for entering the quiz to win the $200 Distant Replays gift card is tonight at 11pm eastern time. Remember, the 11 finalists will include one wild card entrant chosen at random, so you could theoretically get all the questions wrong and still qualify to win the prize. Or to put it another way: There’s no excuse not to enter. Full details in last Thursday’s post.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Hey, speaking of Cooperalls, you’ve probably seen a photo or two of the Whalers wearing them, but Bill Slowsky found a mother lode of them in this eBay auction. ”¦ Family affair from Eric Stanczyk: “Found these old pictures from when my grandfather played on the 1943 Marine Corps team. Apparently servicemen weren’t given much in the way of stirrups.” ”¦ Good roundup of minor league logo revisions here. ”¦ Priceless moment in the crowd during the Rutgers/WVU game on Saturday. “Mom must be proud,” says Tim Walsh, who provided the screen grab. ”¦ Jeremy Brahm turned up some nice photo galleries of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 1956 Japanese goodwill tour, including plenty of good uniform shots (note the piping on the belt tunnels). “Actually, this trip was the last time Jackie Robinson wore a Dodgers uniform in a game,” says Brahm, “because he was traded to the Giants before the 1957 season but did not report and retired.” You can check out the full galleries here and here, and info and pics on a similar 1966 trip are here, here, and here. Also notable: a photo gallery of Dodgers jets! ”¦ Webmaster Johnny Ek was looking at this rundown of the dirtiest names in sports and noted that Rusty Kuntz is represented by this photo, depicting a uni combo that I’m pretty sure never saw game action. ”¦ Anyone know what’s going on here? ”¦ Did you know there’s actually a pre-Pop Warner league for 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds, called the Ankle Biters? I didn’t, until Karen Hibbitt tipped me off to this article. And check out what they wear (click through the entire gallery for the full horrific effect). … More bits re: the Giants’ crimson-clad day: They changed their nose bumpers from blue to red, and radio play-by-play man Bob Papa, who usually punctuates each successful extra point by describing it as “true blue,” instead used the term “dead red.” … Excellent article here on the NFL’s uniform police. … Nice to see that someone at the New York Times was obviously paying close attention to my recent eye black column.

If you look closely at the chain crew member’s uniform, you’ll also notice that he’s wearing NCAA socks. I know that at Patriots games, the chain crew is comprised of local high school and college referees, all of whom normally wear the NCAA striped sock.

The NFL sock is two white stripes, while the NCAA sock is two thin white stripes surrounding a third thicker stripe.

Not that you’d see them if the on-field officials are wearing the track pants.
I gotta say it….Giants red unis: GAWDAWFUL!
Agreed. If they had to go with an alternate, it seems they would’ve been at least better off with a design that worked off their road unis, so they didn’t look like they were all wearing no-contact practice jerseys.

The plain blue only works because it matches the helmet.

Going back to yesterday, I have to take issue with the idea that Michigan should reverse its colors and wear blue pants and yellow jerseys as an alternate. Why do I think this is a bad idea? The very idea that it was accompanied by a comparison to Cal makes it a bad idea. Michigan’s unis are uniquely recognizable as Michigan, and creating an (unnecessary) alternate that would be comparable to another school’s unis would be a huge step backwards.

Also, Minna, thanks for the effort in regards to the Wolverines. But I can’t say I’m disappointed at the Rose Bowl berth. It might have been pretty cool to play OSU again, but this result actually fits better with my old-school opinions on college football. (I think the national championship emphasis is actually bad for college football.)

I’m not positive, but I think the Titans have worn the most uniform combinations this season. Navy jersey/White pants, Navy Jersey/Navy pants, White jersey/Navy pants, White jersey/White Pants, White Jersey/Light Blue pants, Light Blue jerseys/Navy pants, Light Blue jerseys/Light Blue pants. That’s seven combinations in twelve games. They have two more left to try… Light Blue jersey/White pants and Navy jersy/Light Blue pants. I hope they do it.

I’m surprised Paul didn’t focus attention on the socks Golden State was wearing with their throwbacks.

…even if the pictured Mr. Davis (I believe?) didn’t exactly get it right.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending on your views of light blue) the Titans can’t wear their light blue jerseys again this year – the NFL only allows alternate jerseys to be worn twice during a season. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t see the navy/light blue combo.

the pic with the man with the headphones is a crewmember of the chain gang. he is writing the yardline the ball is on in case the chains are knocked down or moved. just a reminder throughout the game for his crew.

As the powder blues would be considered their alternate jerseys, I’m not sure we’ll be able to see them again. I was under the impression that, under NFL rule, teams are only allowed to wear their alternates for a maximium of two games.

    Hey, Paul.

How about a week of bogus information just to see if the Times, SI, etc. run with it?

I know that mimicry is the purest form of flattery (is that the cliche?), but the jackasses stealing your stories aren’t selling temporary tattoos to support their uni habit.

Did anyone else notice that Bills coach link was wearing a cap with his team’s link while the team wore its excellent throwbacks, but he was spotted earlier in the year wearing a link while the team wore its regular vomit-inducing uniforms?

    Merci beaucoup Paul

a virtual cornucopia of UniWatching today.
a feast for the eyes and mind.

The Giants looked like the Arizona Cardinals yesterday. Can’t someone start a campaign “Ditch the Red”? And that goes for their regular away uniforms too, which besides piping on the pants has no blue. “Dead red?” I think that would describe their red zone offense.

    Paul,
For those of us that read your blog from a work computer, can you flag sites that might be considered porn? The site with the Foot Locker pictures got flagged by my IT department.

I doubt this would be able to happen… it’s going to have to do with your company’s filter settings. I’m at work and it came up fine for me – and my company doesn’t allow much.

anybody notice Josh Brown’s plugged earholes in last night’s Seahawk’s game? I can’t find a good view of it, but is clearly visible before or after any field goal. Anybody ever see this before? It was a first for me.

Those Cooperalls were a funny thing. Guys with established careers wearing them like Blobby Clarke or Darryl Sittler. I can’t believe they didn’t just outright refuse to wear those travesties.

So we all agree the black ref’s pants are silly- but what makes them worse is that on TV, the material the tops are made of appear to have a different finish thatn the pants making the black seem “lighter”. They are more shiny and the pants are matte.

And yes, I can vouch for the plugged helmet holes on Brown.

Sorry. I didn’t realize what site it was from — I just did a Google image search on “Foot Locker staff,” came up with that photo (which obviously isn’t pornographic itself), and didn’t pay any mind to its surrounding context.

One comment that Madden & Michaels made was that in cold weather the long pants allow them to layer up better than the knickers which seems rational. That being said there were a couple of single digit games where they sported the knickers so who knows. Subject change – never thought I would ever say anything nice about Duke but I’m glad they haven’t gone with the Nike template jersey yet and my U of A Wildcats haven’t either.

I’ll be the first to chime in positively on the giants red alts…. I like them quite a bit… they are an accurate, historical representation of the 1940’s/early 1950’s giants… where they wore blue helmets as well…

I was at the game yesterday and they looked great in person… most of the fan feedback was positive as well…. they are fine for 1 game a year…

as for the “big blue” nickname… that doesn’t hold too much weight with me… the yanks are referred to as “pinstripes” in their road greys, and the rangers are referred to as “blueshirts” even in their road whites…. wearing red once a year isn’t going to soil the team’s “marketed nickname”…

I personally like the fact that there is little blue in the road unis and little red in the home… makes for two completely different uniform looks… and that is somewhat unique in the NFL…

lastly.. didn’t realize the “ny” nosebumper was switched to red for the game until I saw photos today…

I realize the Giants road whites are modeled after a traditional former days of glory look, but I think they just look “cheap”. Can’t quite put my finger on it, because quite a few teams have simple white with single color road jerseys, but they (the Giants whites) just look more like practice jerseys than anthing else to me.

It could also be that I’m not a fan of the white jersey/grey pants combo, maybe due to baseball uniform conditioning–perhaps blue pants to match the helmet would be a better fit with the white and red jerseys?

That’s why they sell these clips: link

One member of the chain crew clips this to the back edge of the first 5-yard line in the 10-yard series. This way, when the chains need to come in for a measurement, or when you change direction at the end of a period, or when the play swings to the sideline and everyone drops their stakes, there’s a point of reference to reset them.

Have they worn more uniform combinations than the Bengals? I remember someone posted a page with the Bengals’ planned unis for all 16 games.

Matt W – I’m on a work computer and I was able to view the Foot Locker picture, but the one linked from “dirtiest names in sports” was blocked.

Great work, guys — thanks for the info.

I looked up the patent number printed on the clip and came up with link. Click on “Images” and you can see the original patent application itself, complete with prototype drawings.

Am I really the only one who thinks that, at least for the Saints, the black on black is a good look? Yeah, it would be much improved with, say, a gold belt and gold/white/gold striping down the pants, but for some reason, the black on black is the only Saints uniform that doesn’t cause me substantial pain to look at.

As for the Giants in red, and their white with red jerseys, can we please stop that farce? They need blue. Some blue. ANY blue.

Other quick comments: The Titans’ bubblegum ice cream look – amusing, but let’s not do it regularly, shall we? Powder blue on navy blue, yeah, but that’s just a little too much. Bironas looks like he forgot to change out of his jammies.

Marko Jaric: I’ve never laughed so hard at a uni foulup in my life. That was priceless. I’m still smirking about it.

Denver wearing the Rockets jerseys: very, very nice look. I wouldn’t mind seeing that more often, and coming from someone who absolutely LOATHES orange on uniforms, except for the Flyers, Orioles, and (when used properly, ie. not this jersey iteration) Bengals, that says a lot.

The Spurs need to go to the silver jersey full time. That’s an incredibly classy look, and something only they, and maybe the Raiders, could get away with in all of sports.

I like the Reds uniforms overall. The drop shadows are crazy, the font needs to go, but other than that, fantastic. Solid triple, coulda been a home run, but oh well.

“The league hires former players as “sock cops” in every NFL city because they understand what players experience on game days.”

I liked the picture of the sock cop, that untucked look is just not very professional. Do it on your own time, but if this is “work” tuck your shirt in. Very ironic for a fashion cop to be sartorially offensive.

Yea, that’s Baron. I loved the socks. But, originally I thought they were long socks that had fallen down his legs link. then I realized they were just lower socks. Still looked great though. What’s up with the sock on the right leg being different than the other. Looks like he may have another sock underneath or maybe a sweatband above that one.

so, i ended up going to the army/navy game on saturday, and i am so glad i went. it was like the game was secondary to all the pageantry that led up to kick off. the cadets marched on the field first. there were approximately 3600 cadets in formation at 1 time all in precise groups. then they exited and then the middies marched in again another 3600…
as i looked at each cadet and middie all in matching uniforms, i remarked to my dad, “jeez thats alot of garment used to outfit those guys.”

i was able to sneak into 1 of the sections where the middies were sitting and navy ended up scoring. they went crazy, throwing things, bottles, paper, PEOPLE, in the air. a few guys were doing push ups on the crowd. it was amazing…

I noticed 2 uni items this weekend.
    1) John David Booty’s (USC QB) sleeve numbers where much lower (in relation to the red stripe)than the rest of his teammates.
    2) Dre Bly’s (Detriot Lions) pants were more like shorts. I’ve seen many players stretch the limits with over the knee pants, but these were more like mid-thigh. It looked horrible. I hope the sock cops got him.

I must be one of the few people on this board that liked the red Giants uniforms. I am not saying that they should permanently switch over to a red uniform, but they make great alternates.

The University of Kansas football uniforms seemed to have been modeled after the NY Giants unis.

    link

    link

I have always found both uniforms to be very classy. Kansas will don the red alternates once or twice each season. Compared to their failure when playing basketball in the reds, their success in football is good when wearing the red jerseys.

    link

If the Giants would have pulled out the win yesterday I would bet that the opinions of the red jerseys would have been more favorable. Whenever there is something out of the ordinary regarding a uniform, whether it be an alternate jersey or unique sock practice, that is what is associated with the outcome of the game. Players are superstitious, but so are the fans.

Regarding the Pop Warner football for “Ankle Biters,” as the budget-conscious parent of two small kids, I just can’t see buying pads, helmet, full uniform, cleats, etc., etc., etc., for a kid who a) will probably outgrow the uniform by the end of the season, and b) could lose interest the sport as a whole within fifteen minutes of the first practice.

There’s a reason that soccer is popular with parents. :)

While I would have no idea how the equipment is managed, I would only hope that much of this equipment is loaned to the players, returned at the end of the season and reused by new participants the following year. Granted, league fees may be higher if all that equipment needs to be provided–but that would still be cheaper than having to purchase all the equipment yourself.

I never played pee-wee or pop warner football. But as a former baseball catcher, I remember in early little league years that most of my catching equipment was borrowed from the league, including my mitt, as my parents would never have bought all that stuff for me at that time.

on occasion you get to see the pop warner playoffs on espn. usually it is a team from florida or dc or cali that wins, and more often than not, when i see it, its like the mini florida gators are playing… anyway, i remember seeing a practice of these kids going crazy with athletic tape. a single roll around the thigh of each leg over the pants, as well a thinner amount put on the facemask to give the impression of a checkerboard or striped facemask (a practice ive seen also by FAMU in the past). has anyone else seen this?

HO! LY! CRAP! That looks horrible!! I think lots of players go with the tights instead of colored socks.

Howie Schwab was on Cold Pizza Friday, and was wearing a Seahawks jersey. The jersey said “Seahawk” and was missing the S. I don’t have DVR, but anyone that does and tivo’d it, check it out.

Hey Krvanch, is Bly wearing PE Jordan’s or are those the pair they sold for football a couple of seasons ago?

I thought Baron Davis was in the old school mood and that’s why he was link, but I guess he goes short with link.

I saw a highlight of this last night and thought it was funny.
The Broncos’ punter, Paul Ernster, accidentally took the field without a helmet on. He had to sprint back off the field to retrieve his helmet.

“I was just so focused on the game and ready to punt. I was excited. I had my hat on,” Ernster said. “And was standing there. Nobody said anything. And I started jogging out and everybody was like, ‘Dude, put your helmet on you.”

link mentions it under the OOPS section.
Sorry, I couldn’t find any pics or video to link to.

As evidence of this link it appears that he did wear spandex with the Rams, however his pants are not altered. His pants are short however you can tell by the bunching around the bottom that they are not altered in the same fashion he wears now.

they look like the standard jordan 14 that you and i could have picked up on eastbay. there is really nothing about them (that i can see) that would make it a PE). although, since he probably got it direct from nike/brand jordan, it may have PE labeling inside and on the box.

ahman green wore those as well. youve seen warren sapp’s PE jordan 9’s and 11’s. deion had PE 11’s, moss had PE 9’s and 11’s. alot of guys within the past 5 years had PE jordans, but currently i think only T.O. and marvin harrison have PE jordans…

What’s with his glove? Is it too small for his hand, or does keeping it undone and only part-way on your hand help handle the ball? What’s the point of a glove if you don’t wear and use it properly?

If someone can shed some light on this for a pure NFL hater, please do so. I thank you in advance.

Is it just me or does the number typography on Dre Bly’s jersey in the pic for the Rams look off? It looks awfully block compared to the font that they normally use…

To be honest, I like and use this one myself: link

If you notice, it even goes up to 55 for Canadian Football!

As a Linesman, I am often stuck with none-too-eager volunteers to work the chains at high school and youth/Pop Warner games. So I don’t have the luxury of a clip man as part of the crew. I have to carry the clip in my back pocket during the game. It’s much easier and comfortable to keep the fabric strip in the pocket than the giant coaster-thing I linked to before.

I’ve also seen these before: link

One referee had one of those made out of metal, including the spring-loaded clips. On a warm summer day on an astroturf field, they get quite hot.

nah, i should have actually been clearer. when a player has a contract with a shoe company, they often times get special shoes. this is most evident in basketball where there are initials, numbers, messages, and other things embroidered on the shoes as well as special colorways for the player not available in stores. these are called Player Exclusives.

They fetch big cash on ebay, and in nikes case, come with special tag numbering (like a VIN number) so the shoe can be tracked to who it was issued to. this is done to prevent ebay reselling. believe it or not, nike has a group of people who just read message boards, and who monitor online auctions for this very reason.

After seeing the Titans new uniforms Sunday one thing came to mind… The Smurfs just made a triumphant return to television.

Burrill, you make a good point about the emphasis on the national championship. I always thought it was a shame that a season is decided on one loss (or two) and the perception that if a team didn’t make the championship, it was a lost season. Besides, the Rose Bowl is so majestic and old-timey with a Big Ten participant and a Pac-10 participant. Glad to know you aren’t disappointed.

And now, if you’ll please excuse me, I have to finish the sadist’s quiz. I always put off my homework until the last minute while in college, and I did the same this time. Good thing I looked at it last night to get a head start, or I’d be screwed. Paul, you better appreciate my snarky answers because I put in some extra thought into them just for you.

Toronto Maple Leafs to Change Logo
Team executive says leaf will be modernised
    By: Chris Creamer – sportslogos.net
    December 2, 2006

It hasn’t been touched in 25 years, but a team executive says the Toronto Maple Leafs will be changing their logo for the 2007-08 season.

According to an article in the December 2, 2006 edition of The Toronto Star, the club will unveil a modernised ‘leaf-silhouette’ at the All-Star Game in January, when all NHL teams are expected to be unveiling their new ‘form-fitting’ uniforms.

The uniforms are reportedly to remain nearly the same, with the only changes, other than the logo, being in the fabric rather than the design.

Other teams have been rumoured to be making drastic changes, including the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins, but these claims have yet to be confirmed.

Ugg…too much of a good thing I guess. I liked the powder blue pants and white jerseys from last week, but this is too much. Besides, I think San Diego sports enough powder blue for the AFC for the entire season.

That being said, I think I like Buffalo’s throwbacks the most (even more than the Chargers’). Does the NFL consider the throwback’s an alternate? They should have at least one throwback week per year and encourage all the teams to wear throwback jerseys, with a few exceptions:

    1) The Texans should be allowed to wear Oilers throwbacks, but not the Titans. Houston should be allowed to choose between Oiler’s throwbacks or old Dallas Texans (pre-KC Chiefs) uniforms.

    2) The Broncos must revive their early 60’s brown and yellow color scheme, NOT the orange crush uniform of 70s and 80s. They lost that right when they concocted those god-awful orange swoop stripes.

    3) Washington must wear Lombardi R helmets or feather stripe helmets, NOT Seminole-arrowhead helmets. Additionally, Washington must also suit up Sonny Jurgensen to play QB.

    4) The Ravens will be allowed to don the Colts uniforms. The Colts must play naked that week, as retribution.

Georgia Tech’s official colors are old gold and white. they have used both black and navy in the past as a third color, but in the recent past- within the past five years- they removed black. they looked back at old photos to see what it was originally, saw that it was navy, and went with it. so in closing, it is not black. That is just a bad picture. GT is most definitely navy and gold. Yes I know an actual yellow jacket is black and gold, but there are plenty of teams that use colors that dont accurately depict their animal mascot. i.e. LSU and Auburn with the tigers. Tigers are black and orange, not yellow and purple, or navy and orange.

Check out this Uni-related item from the MLB Hot Stove. Could the color of shoes determine the market (or the lack there of) for Barry?

The agent also said that Barry Bonds would much rather stay in San Francisco than sign with Oakland. “He doesn’t want to drive across the Bay, he doesn’t want to play in a dilapidated stadium, and he doesn’t want to wear the white shoes,” the agent said.

link Bonds should try wearing the same color shoes as his teammates. Those may technically be gray, but they’re not too far from white. As an A’s fan, I’m glad he doesn’t want to move across the bay. What an ass.

    Paul,

We’ve had some conversations off line about uniforms…ok, mostly the Mets, but I wanted to try and clarify something about the Giants and the red tops.

As I’ve told you, my “expertise” comes from producing historical sports documentaries, most notably, When It Was A Game, and the color film we have acquired over the years.

Most of your readers seem to know that the Giants did at one time wear red tops with Blue helmets. The difference is the pants were not grey, but khaki.

I have film of them playing a game at the Polo Grounds when they are wearing the uniform. Unfortunately I have no idea how to get that to the site.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

This is rather random. Paul, I think there needs to be some design contests, like the one you had for espn on the nationals re-design. We could have one whenever a major team comes out with a new design, see if anyone can do better, I think that would be cool.

    Anyway, link.

Like most teams, it’s the jersey that counts. Not many x-mas sales in football pants.

The Giants likely use the Grey pants because that’s what they already wear. To go khaki would be costly, and my guess is not worth it to them.

No, Steve C., you’re not the only one. If you go through the archives, you’ll see that roughly ninety-nine percent of the board (including me) agrees. In fact, I would venture that the all-teals are nearly as hated as the Vikes’ gaudy unis this year.

ok…i’m not one much to talk, because i too at one time owned a maize michigan jersey (as well picked up from the nike outlet store)…but, as much as i love tradition, and love those navy blues coming out of the tunnel…i would love to see a maize jersey. every other varsity team has a maize jersey, why can’t the football team? heck, with the “GO BLUE WEAR MAIZE” campaign they have this year, there were talks throught the athletic department about the possibility of a maize jersey.
Kevin K., no, just no. I’m not a big fan of the helmet (I know, Burrill, don’t shoot me), but I think I would have an aneurysm if Michigan donned a maize jersey. They are synonymous with blue.

Now, if Notre Dame wanted to switch to the greens full-time, I would have no complaints about that.
I agree with everything but the helmet comment, although I will admit that with every ncaa football game that i own i have created “michigan 2” and given them a maize jersey. the fact that michigan is synonymous with blue is the reason why michigan’s attempts at a “maize-out” never works to the extent that nebraska, ohio state, and penn state have all had. in nebraska and ohio state’s case, red is their primary color. for penn state, there are enough white shirts laying around that they can pull it off. not enough people have maize shirts sitting around at home and can grab one for the game and go (unlike me, who has at least 5 in my dresser as we speak). Burrill can probably back me up on this…agreed?

Yeah, the maize-out has been pretty weak. And though I think you are on to something with part of the reason the maize-out thing hasn’t been a raging success, I think a big part of the reason is just that by and large, most Michigan crowds really don’t care that much. The most excited part of the crowd (as it should be) is the student section, and they have had no problem figuring out link. (This is true in basketball, as well — the student section is very uniformly yellow.) But it just doesn’t catch on with the rest of the fans, and I’m not really sure it has anything to do with the color. I don’t know that a blue-out would be much more successful. Maybe a little, since most fans have blue, but probably not much more. (That said, I would like to see them try a blue-out. It wouldn’t have quite the visual impact, but it would still be worth a try.)

Back to the yellow uniform idea: I just can’t support it. I enjoy the yellow hockey unis, and I can handle the yellow basketball unis (though I do prefer the blues), but I think you just don’t mess with the identity of a team like that. The other varsity sports have fine traditions of their own, but Michigan is first a football school, and that football program has forged its tradition in the blues. There is no compelling reason to alter that now. Not in my mind.

And Minna, I would go cry in the corner because you don’t like the Michigan helmet, but I’m too busy not being offended. So there. :-P

I was at the ACC Championship game (one of the few, but I didn’t pay for my tix) and the GT jerseys were definitely blue. I was on the field when they first ran out and it was prominently NAVY BLUE at the beginning. It’s because of the constant rain (and also the fact it was a really cloudy day didn’t help) that every photo makes it seem black. Hope this clarifies things.

Sorry if this has been posted already. Anyway, while I was watching the Appalachian St.-Montana St. D-1AA playoff game on Saturday I noticed the App St. kicker had put his merit decals on his helmet in the following design (I couldn’t get a screen grab).

    @ @ @
    @ @
    @ @
    @@@@@@@

Well that didn’t come out looking right so I’ll try again. I’ll use @ to designate the merit decals and . to show where spaces should be.

Oh well. I can’t get it to look right, but it looked like goal post with a football splitting the uprights. Very clever I thought.

Ah, Burrill, don’t hate the playa, hate the game. I have no idea how that relates to this comment, but I just feel like saying it. The stripes are too wide. Do I dare say it? Oh, yes, I do. link, it looks like it’s going to be mostly yellow with smidgeons of blue thrown in. link, it’s suddenly mostly blue with a little bit of yellow. The whole thing is schizoid. To be fair, yellow and blue are not my favorite colors, but still. It’s the pattern that I don’t like.

Slap a logo of a link on there, and now we’re talking! I’d even let you keep the blue. It’s mostly the yellow that bothers me.
If the Giants would have pulled out the win yesterday I would bet that the opinions of the red jerseys would have been more favorable.

Nah…if the Giants would have won by a thousand points…those red jerseys still look like a college intramural team…horrid.
My beloved Giants looked like Paul Crewe’s ‘Mean Machine’, except that the quarterback was ‘Fredo Corleone. (props to the sports guy for the great reference.)

Do you dislike the winged helmet design (then not liking the princeotn, michigan, delaware, etc. helmets), or is it strictly just michigan?

    Paul,

Since you’ve already started a petition to get the Mets to get rid of the Ugly Black jerseys, and you form a petition for the Giants to get rid of the Red

    Thanks

Kevin K., I just don’t like the design at all. I have tried, and I know it is a classic, but it’s just not my cup of tea, no matter who wears it.

Then again, I called for an all-black unis NFL weekend, so WTF do I know?

Kansas did indeed wear yellow jerseys once in the ’87/’88 season against I believe Coastal Carolina. I’ve seen a small video clip of it but unfortunately don’t have a picture.

I wouldn’t be so critical of the pockets in NFL officials’ cold pants. In the picture from the Bills game, at least, they helped Ed Hochuli comply with the Buffalo law forbidding pythons from being loose in public.

Naw, now, see, Dan B-P, there ought to be a law against restraining such mighty fine pythons. Man, but does Ed know how to work it.

What’s sad about the Cubs’ uniforms? Even if you dislike the drab gray roads, there are few better looks than the Cubs’ home jerseys.

Mark, I think he’s a White Sox fan, so it pains him to admit that the Cubs look good. Timmy D, correct me if I’m wrong.
I’m a big believer in the light blue jersey/light blue pants combo. Go Titans!

Seahawks don’t wear teal. It’s blue.

Red has been a Giants color for years.

The red jersey is an alternate to be worn only once per season. Not a big deal.
