New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: Did the Astros sign Carlos Lee to a $100 million contract and then give him someone else’s ill-fitting jersey when introducing him to the media? Kevin Gee thinks so. Here’s why:
Check out Friday’s press conference for Carlos Lee and Woody Williams. Upon accepting his jersey, No. 45, Lee looks at the tag and says something to GM Tim Purpura. Iï ¿ ½m pretty sure it was something like, ï ¿ ½This ainï ¿ ½t going to fit,ï ¿ ½ because he couldnï ¿ ½t get it to button up all the way. [He tries to keep it closed with the jersey’s Velcro patch, but that pops open about 20 seconds later. — PL] When presented with his cap, he puts it on and says, ï ¿ ½We got this one right.” Even after sitting back down next to Woody Williams, he still appears to be fussing with the jersey and talking to Woody about it.
My screen grabs don’t do justice to the absurdity of this sequence. For the full effect, you can access the press conference video here (if that link doesn’t work for you, go to this page and click on “Lee/Williams press conference”). Once the video starts playing, fast forward to the 14-minute mark, or drag the progress icon to that point. Lee walks up to the podium at about 14:05.
So why was Lee’s jersey so snug? Again, Kevin Gee: “The last Astros player to wear No. 45 was Mike Gallo. He’s 6’0″, 175 pounds; Lee is 6’2″, 240 pounds.” Did the ‘Stros really just grab a Gallo jersey and swap the name on the back for Lee’s press conference? Are they really paying a guy $100 million but too cheap to spring for a new jersey? Is anyone losing his job over the little snafu? Stay tuned.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Yet another helmet decal snafu yesterday, as Hunter Hillenmeyer was “C”-less. … Good article here about the Bengals’ equipment manager (including a short but informative audio file linked on the same page). … Oh. My. God. … The fight over Wisconsin’s “motion W” logo goes on and on (with thanks to Mike Hughes). … Crystal Falls Forrest Park — a Michigan high school — wears some nifty hoop socks. Further details here (courtesy of Brian Campbell). … On Saturday I mentioned that players on Jeannette High supposedly wore their names in script above their nose bumpers, but the only photo I had was too fuzzy to make out. Now Jason Schiffhauer has provided better pics, here and here. … Remember LeCharles Bentley’s unsuccessful bid to wear double-zero? Patrick Gaughan has an update: “I’m home in Cleveland for Turkey Day, and on the news there was a story about LeCharles Bentley making a Thanksgiving meal for less fortunate people. He was wearing a 00 Browns jersey during the whole interview. Looks like he’s still pursuing the 00 for next season.” … Michael Korczynski notes that Tom Brady Mike Vrabel’s OSU jersey in practice the other day (and note that Vinny Testaverde, kneeling in the background, is wearing the wrong socks). … Hot dogs and baseball: two great tastes that taste great together. … Justin McGrail writes: “I’m watching the Boise State/Nevada game and I noticed that Boise running back Ian Johnson has two number decals on the front of his helmet, a 71 and a 64. Nobody else on the team has them.” Anyone know what this is about? … Pat Tillman jerseys are selling briskly. … Kentucky RB Rafael Little wore one leg sleeve on Saturday. … You probably heard that Ben Wallace was benched for wearing a headband on Saturday. What you may not have noticed is that he was also violating the league’s new anti-armband rules. … High-diddley-ho! Avs goalie Peter Budaj wears Ned Flanders on his mask’s backplate. Why? “According to this page, it was a nickname given to him by one of the Avalanche equipment managers,” says Patrick Lewis. “It’s also worth pointing out that Flanders is holding the flag of Budaj’s native Slovakia, with the country’s coat of arms on his shirt.” … Now that’s right purty. … The Islanders inducted Bob Bourne into their team hall of fame on Saturday, and wore a commemorative patch for the occasion. … Good catch by Jesse Gavin, who writes: “I was at the Vikings/Cardinals game and had good enough seats that I could tell Dwight Smith didn’t have any white socks on during the game.”
Not sure if it is common knowledge or what, but Brady is wearing Mike Vrabel’s Ohio State jersey because the two had a bet going on who would win the game played between both of their alma maters, Brady of course being a Michigan guy.
Love the Ben Wallace story. We in the UniWorld need more coaches like Skiles.
Re: Ian Johnson’s numbers on his helmet. ESPN the magazine recently did a profile on him. Those are numbers of two offensive linemen who are hurt and out for the year. Something like that…
You forgot to mention that the Redskins finally went back to wearing the correct White over Burgandy uniforms for yesterday’s game.

Peter Budaj was given that nickname to him by the equipment managers because he’s extremely religious. He donates 10% of his salary to his church.
Don’t you think that part of the problem with Carlos Lee’s jersey is that he’s putting it on over a sports coat? That sure would make it seem too small to me.
Interesting bit about the Wisconsin “W” copyright. I have never been a fan of the popular practice of high-schools mimicing college or professional logos (while usually just changing the color scheme), and it seems to happen a lot.
I was really interested in this article though, because last year while visiting back home I attended a football game at my old high school — whose name I won’t mention to prevent being a “whistle-blower”, but my home town begins with the letter “W”. I was disappointed because their old, very original “W” logo, had been replaced with one that basically mimiced the Wisconsin “W”. With any luck, this new devolopement will prompt school officals to revert back to the old one.
Perhaps the Astros designed the jersey for Lee under the assumption that he link
Speaking of school logo trademarks, I wonder how long it’ll be before the University of Kansas goes after link for their rip-off of the link logo.
Did anyone else think its somewhat ironic that in the same post talking about the Wisconsin trademark battle, that the pictures of Jeannette High’s helmets shows an exact copy of KU’s Jayhawk, except different coloring?
I don’t have any pictures, but during the Texas-Texas A&M game, on tv you could see that there were quite a few A&M players who’s “aTm” helmet decal was peeling off.

PHEW! I almost threw up when I saw that picture because I thought he wore it willingly. Wearing your buddy’s (and arch rival) uniform is OK just as long as there was a chance that your buddy will have to wear yours.
Speaking of school logo trademarks, I wonder how long it’ll be before the University of Kansas goes after Jeannette High for their rip-off of the Jayhawk logo.
Or how why link hasn’t yet sued NC State?
I can see where Winsconsin wouldn’t want High schools copying their logo. As for the Kansas Jayhawk, there is so much history behind it and the artist was a KU alum, it seriously should not be used by Jeanette or any other high school.
Can you imagine if they had the Jeanette link?
Or the Jeanette Cardinal? How about the Jeanette Boilermakers or Hoosiers? Jeanettelink?
I’ve noticed that Kobe Bryant has been getting away with his link all season. I think the rule is beyond stupid, but what’s worse is that they don’t bother to enforce it.
I noticed on thursday that some of the Cowboys players link a Riddell bumper on their helmets, and some others link.

He isn’t getting away with it because the link that wrist bands have to be worn on the wrist or forearm, not the bicep.
That rule the Bulls have about not wearing headbands is kind of silly, I won’t lie. But Big Ben needs to follow his teams rules. It’s inexcusable to disobey a coach over something stupid like not being able to wear a headband. Maybe he should worry more about link rather than what the the top of his head looks like.

AMEN! It’s about time the Redskins looked like the Redskins. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they actually played like the Redskins yesterday too! Hopefully the white-on-white Bullsh*t is in the past.
I didn’t see this addressed in Sunday’s open thread comments section, but another footnote for the Southern-Grambling photo is that Grambling’s jerseys were designed by Big Boi of OutKast fame. Brief tidbit on that link and link.
what, no references of the 1957 throwbacks the Browns wore? Or did we all not really notice?
didn’t check so much into yesterday’s thread in case I missed the big discussion.
Wisconsin “W” ripoffs extend all the way down south to Texas. It was pretty funny going to high school games such as my old link, the Westwood Warriors link. Both blatent ripoffs of Wisconsin (with added indian feathers) and the Denver Broncos with different colors.
Then there is my old middle school that uses one of the most ripped off logos link
did the Browns even show up to play?
Southern’s unis are AMAZING. Grambling, too. But Southern’s are my new favorites.
Carlos Lee won’t be wearing a sports coat but he’ll still be mistaken for Mo Vaughn. Good God! you’re a pro baseball player, man, not a linebacker!
I personally do not see the big deal with the use of the logos by high school teams. In NY there are many high school teams that I know of that use another teams logo. link uses the exact same helmet as the University of Georgia, and link uses the “G” that is used by Georgia, Grambling, and most notably the Green Packers. The Florida State Spear logo is used by link, link, and link. link uses the Clemson Claw design, link uses the Michigan State Spartan (also only have logo on link like the Steelers), and link has the exact same helmet as UCONN. So to make sure that no other school uses a logo is absurd. There are far too many teams that do so to completely eliminate the imitation.
That’s a fun story with Brady and Vrabel. Carson Palmer and Tab Perry had a similar bet last season where Tab, from UCLA, had to wear Carson’s #3 USC jersey after the Trojans beat the Bruins.
This has probably been mentioned by Paul, or somebody else here, but why did the Colts switch to grey facemasks? Does it have something to do with the color affecting vision, was it aesthetics, or did they just need to add a third color for merchandising reasons? The blue looked better.
I think I would have liked Southern’s unis better if the leg strip matched the shoulder stripe. That or if they had white pants instead of solid gold all the way down.
i think i remember that the colts wanted to look more oldschool.

Funny you found this. I am a former player of Burnt Hills, and the new coach, Matt Shell changed color scheme and logo after 2001. The old was an Interlocking BH on one side and player number on the other, a la Alabama. Columbia from what I remember never had a UCONN C as of 2001
I noticed on thursday that some of the Cowboys players link a Riddell bumper on their helmets, and some others link.
This comes up every couple of weeks – Riddell is the “official” helmet of the NFL, so only they are allowed to have their logo on the front bumper. Players who wear Schutt or Adams helmets either have a blank bumper (like the Cowboys, Buccaneers, Steelers, or Chiefs – and I may be leaving some teams out) or have the team logo on the bumper.
New ESPN column is up — look link.
Can we officially end the suitcoat or dress shirt under the jersey tradition? I understand that the players want to look respectful and wear a tie, but could we compromise on a suitcoat over a turtleneck or some other shirt that will not look dumb for the rest of the press conference? It is link.
Paul is there legally a difference between a logo and just a letter? Because the “w” on the Wisconsin helmet is slanted it counts as a picture not a letter? I would find it hard to believe somebody could copywrite a letter (like the connecticut C, its a block letter c).
Paul is there legally a difference between a logo and just a letter? Because the “w” on the Wisconsin helmet is slanted it counts as a picture not a letter? I know I am not Paul, but I might be able to shed some light here. What you are more likely to see than a copyright in this situation is a link. This matters for more than just the definition of “trademark” versus “copyright.” Trademarks can be renewed indefinitely, as long as they are used in commerce. Copyrights can eventually become public property. You can trademark anything that is representative of your product. That includes a letter, a font, a logo, or even a color. The government keeps a database called the link, or link.
It is a lot of fun to look up your link and see everything that they have trademarked. For instance, the Yankees still have the New York Highlanders trademarked.
Instead of suing the schools who use their W, Wisonsin ought to heavily recruit them. Good athletes out of those high schools might be encouraged to enroll at Wisconsin if they get to wear a logo or color scheme or mascot they are familiar with.

If players take off their jackets, the look is fine. They are going to a press conference announcing them to their new team and fans, and a suit should be their first choice – looking good and making a good impression.
It looks like Rafael Little is wearing a compression sleeve on his leg, not an attempt to imitate any nike-type sleeves on his leg. You can clearly see the separation between his compression shorts and the area around his knee since the pants, compression shorts and sleeve are all white. He probably has shin splints and is just trying to alleviate the pain.
Nice article about the eye black, Paul. You forgot to mention one of the most egregious abusers of eye black- John Randle. He used to cover half his face with eye black. I think he must have been inspired from a few too many viewings of “Any Given Sunday”. I’m pretty sure the NFL started to fine players who were covering more than their cheeks with the stuff because of him too.
I noticed on thursday that some of the Cowboys players link a Riddell bumper on their helmets, and some others link.
This has been covered in the past, check out the archives. Basically, any NFL helmet that has either the team name in the nose bumper of the helmet or has a blank bumper is an Adams or a Schutt helmet. Riddell has the on field licensing agreement with the NFL so that only their company name can appear on NFL helmets. It’s the same reason that all uniforms and sideline apparel are made my Reebok. The NFL doesn’t allow other logos on the field other than those manufacturers with whom the league has an on field licensing agreement.

As an Astros fan, I’m just glad we got someone other than Berkman in the lineup that can hit, so I don’t care how much of a fatass Lee is so long as he hits home runs for us. Let’s all remember that Babe Ruth didn’t exactly possess an athletic build either (and now I’m not comparing Lee to Ruth, just providing context). I agree wtih Dan. As a Redskins fan I must say that I welcome the change to the white pants. I think it looks much more sleek and classy. Interesting bit about the Wisconsin “W†copyright. I have never been a fan of the popular practice of high-schools mimicing college or professional logos (while usually just changing the color scheme), and it seems to happen a lot.
I was really interested in this article though, because last year while visiting back home I attended a football game at my old high school — whose name I won’t mention to prevent being a “whistle-blowerâ€Â, but my home town begins with the letter “Wâ€Â. I was disappointed because their old, very original “W†logo, had been replaced with one that basically mimiced the Wisconsin “Wâ€Â. With any luck, this new devolopement will prompt school officals to revert back to the old one.
as a fellow mountaineer and former west virginia high school football player, i can only think of maybe two schools in the state that use that logo. one being at the top of the northern panhandle. but they’ve used it for a long time. any hints at what school you’re talking about? i gotta know.

Why black? Black alts are so cliche in today’s NFL. The Jags, the Ravens, the Lions. Why can’t a team come up with something else for an alt jersey. I know NFL uniform restrictions make it difficult to come up with something really unique but something has to be done with the black schtick.

I’m a huge fan of alternate uniforms, except when they’re overused like the Mets black uniform and a certain Cubs pitcher who apparently only feels good wearing blue–[cough] Zambrano [cough]–but the spate of black jerseys in all leagues is getting out of control. I’m glad the NBA nixed all black alternates this year, it’s forced some teams (like the Jazz) to be more creative. And in the end, isn’t that a large part of uniform design?

I wouldn’t mind seeing the gold pants return but the gold helmet – no thanks.
I think there is something wrong trying to look like another team! That’s what the original Bengals and Paul Brown did to copy the Browns.
How about being original.
Why would a Redskins fan want to honor Lombardi that much?
I do think that after Gibbs retires – they will get a new logo to appease the Native American tribes who oppose the name Redskins.
Thanks Burril for the the links to the Menominee vs. Madison game!
Seriously folks, have you ever come across something more ridiculous than an entire team that looks like link?
I’ve never been a big fan of Menominee’s link, but coming from a school that wears link I can’t say too much. Our old unis were cheap ripoffs of the old purple/gold Vikings unis, and I liked them better than what we have now, but since I’m defending purple here, I’ll just stop now.

As a graduate of Guilderland, this was really cool to see. Many moons ago, the unis had the clipper ship on them, as we were/are the Guilderland Flying Dutchmen.
It was different, but I much prefer that to the inane lack of creativity shown by so many other schools. How many more Patriots/Vikings/Tigers do we really need?
I remember my elementary school, St. Gemma. The mascot was the Shamrocks. The old helmet was white and had a cool shamrock logo. Then, about ten to fifteen years ago, they went with the generic Green Bay Packers “G.”
I miss the shamrock.

I don’t like the new Jays logo either. I was always a big fan of the original one (Doug Ault, Steve Staggs, Otto Velez….those were the days). They blew it with all those logos they had after the original.

Because the “w” on the Wisconsin helmet is slanted it counts as a picture not a letter? I would find it hard to believe somebody could copywrite a letter (like the connecticut C, its a block letter c).
The Brewers still hold onto the Seattle Pilots TM too….not to mention the NBA, which holds onto the trademarks of all the old ABA teams they drove out of business like the Miami Floridians…
And if you ever want to use ‘Frankford Yellowjackets’ on a shirt, the NFL will get ya too!

Us up here in Michigan have the creativity you’ve been starving for… Burrill can agree, I remember he’s from Chelsea (Bulldogs, pretty uncreative). First, I don’t have pictures of the varsity, but here are the JV unis for the link.
As you requested, the Ann Arbor Pioneer Pioneers — link and link.
The Dexter link — cool name with a cartoony muscular ship as a logo. Though they tend to call themselves the Dreads, which makes them sound a bit like a hairstyle.
The Saline Hornets — the previously mentioned link and link.
The link.
The Tecumseh Indians (home) — perhaps Minna’s link.
The link.
And my own team, the blandly-named Chelsea Bulldogs: link, link, and short-lived link.
The Huron River Rats are set to join the SEC next year, and the still-unnamed (and not yet completed) third Ann Arbor school will also join the conference. (Some are pushing for Schembechler High; I don’t see the city going for that.)

It’s not that difficult really to change a team’s nickname, the Browns became the Crows, er Ravens. For specific tribes, e.g. the Seminoles, the Utes, etc. it can be uplifting.
Besides the Redskins uniform is ugly…they should use a darker red but I gues that would cause more protests. There absolutely is no reason why a high school, I’m talking to you, Tulsa Union, should ever use “Redskins!!! That is so disrespectful…

AMEN! It’s about time the Redskins looked like the Redskins. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they actually played like the Redskins yesterday too! Hopefully the white-on-white Bullsh*t is in the past.
I must disagree. I have hated the red pants from the day that the Redskins abandoned their cool yellow pants . . . how long has it been now, 25 or 30 years ago? The white-on-white was a welcome and long overdue change, so it is my hope that the red pants were a one-week aberration.
I agree wtih Dan. As a Redskins fan I must say that I welcome the change to the white pants. I think it looks much more sleek and classy. The Skins have managed to update their look without getting all crazy with new logos and all. However, I do not endorse completely burning the burgundy pants, but maybe break them out once/year for Dallas or something.
According to the Post, the players approached Gibbs asking to make the change. Ironically, the move to the all-white began with the Rams game last year, and started the winning streak at the end of last season.
I’d love to see gold pants, as well as the gold “R” helmet that Lombardi brought to the club when he coached there (wanted them to look like the Packers – nothin’ wrong with that).
Serious??
I wouldn’t mind seeing the gold pants return but the gold helmet – no thanks.
I think there is something wrong trying to look like another team! That’s what the original Bengals and Paul Brown did to copy the Browns.
How about being original.
Why would a Redskins fan want to honor Lombardi that much?
I do think that after Gibbs retires – they will get a new logo to appease the Native American tribes who oppose the name Redskins.
I crtainly hope not!
Besides… The ‘Skins dont do anything like the chant (Atlanta Braves) or the tomahak chop (FL Seminoles) or anyhing else that I think is more offensive thn just a name. Also, they are the one of the most profitable sports franchises on the planet, and let’s face it… everything comes down to the alighty dollar anyways. So I doubt that the ‘Skins will ever have to change there name. Dan (the worst thing to ever hapen to the Redskins) Snyder will just throw a lot of money at the problem and it will go away.
Back on topic…. I like the Burgandy over Gold that they wore for the 2003 70th anniversary season. White over Gold just looks ugly. But nothing will ever top the quinessential White over BUrundy Redskins.

About the UWM’s W what exactly is so great about it that so many HS are copying it? The throwback uni’s they sported earlier this year with the old helmets look sooooooo much better:
UWM doesn’t have a football team.
Check out the Loyola Collge Prep Flyers helmets link from Shreveport, LA.
They actually got written permission in the 60’s or 70’s from Charles Schultz to use the logo. Still have the letter framed at the school.
I think Dan Snyder has done well. I mean, at least he is willing to spend the money, even if it doesn’t end up working out (Deion, Jeff George, etc.) Unlike Bill Bidwell in Arizona…

For the record I would only be an advocate for a logo change – keep the name and colors. The logo is a bit offensive when combined with the name and an update would be a step towards PC without going too far (ie Washington Bullets become Wizards)It’s not like a logo retirement is the end of the world.
And I’d wait for Gibbs to go – for history’s sake.
Re: Ben Wallace.
He’s a punk with no class or manners, plain and simple.
His latest comments about the whole headband thing prove that.
Wallace said, “If you know the rules and break them, you expect to be punished. I can’t try to put myself above the team or anybody else and wear a headband like I did. I’m amn enough to take the punishment. But I’m not sorry.”
When asked why he did it Wallace said, “I just felt like wearing it.”
How in the world is that not putting yourself above your team and anyone else?
If Skiles has any balls he’ll bench Wallace until he learns his lesson and apologizes to the team and Skiles.
The Washington Redskins tried to activate a change last season and then started on a winning streak (here comes the white pants and jerseys) and so Dan gets all superstitious and decides to hold off. The change was sweet. Think black.
Next year is their 75th Anniversary so you’ll be seeing something to celebrate that big event.
Footnote: The NFL only allows a team to wear an anniversary uniform 3 times in a season, twice in the regular season and once in the pre-season, so it will only be a tease but all and all a good conversation topic for sports branding and uni blogs everywhere.

How is the logo offensive? It does not show an offensive pose or gesture… it looks no worse than a coin… link.
I hope and pray every day that the ‘Skins don’t go black. That would be a huge mistake, and about 8 years behind the black is cool wave that many teams in most sports, unfortunatly, rode. See link, link, and link for a few examples. Black Redskins uniforms would only further lock Dan in first place for the worst thing to ever happen to the Burgandy and Gold.
Footnote reply: If a team declares there “anniversary uniform” as there regular game unis, they can wear said uniform for the whole season. That is how they wore the retro styled ones in 8 regular season games in the 70’th season (7 home & 1 in Dallas; they wore White over Burgundy at home against Dallas because the cowboys are cursed in blue).

Vince,
Right back at cha! ; D
William Henry “Lone Star” Dietz (1884-1964) was the head coach of the Boston Redskins (now Washington Redskins) of the National Football League. George Preston Marshall, owner and founder of the franchise, sought to rename the Boston Braves after leaving the stadium they shared with the baseball team of the same name. He chose the name Boston Redskins in honor of Dietz, who falsely claimed to be part “Sioux”. In fact Dietz was entirely of European ancestry, as was proven by an Indian Country Today article.

Well, that is news to me. Ever story that I have ever heard is exactly like the link I had posted. But regardless of what we now know about Lone Star Dietz, George Preston Marshall changed the team’s name to honor Lone Star & the Sioux based on what he knew about him in the 1930’s.
