Today in the Ticker: A blazer-hoodie combo in the WNBA, wristbands worn around socks, and more.

Baseball

MLB

  • Mets and Yankees players wore first responder caps yesterday for 9/11. Other MLB teams wore cap patches, although Marlins P Jesús Luzardo was missing his. (From Brendon Smith)
  • XYZ: Padres OF Trent Grisham “went to the plate for his first at bat Friday with his fly down; then he went big fly (yes, he hit a home run),” says Matthew Wolfram.
Football

College

  • Canada’s Western University added a memorial helmet decal for a former coach, K.J. Kenemy. (From Wade Heidt)
Hockey

Minors/Juniors

Basketball

WNBA

  • The Aces’ coaching staff have been wearing blazers with hoodies underneath. The WNBA requires either business attire or matching team-branded outfits for coaches, so that’s a way of incorporating both. (From Kary Klismet)

More

  • The Basketball Hall of Fame, besides giving inductees rings, also gives out orange blazers and jerseys with the year of induction as the number. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Durango (Colo.) HS has a new court. (From Kary Klismet)
  • The boys’ team at Florida State University School, or simply Florida High School, in Tallahassee, got championship rings for last season’s state championship. (From Kary Klismet)
Soccer

USA

  • Some English players and coaches around the NWSL wore black armbands in memory of Elizabeth II, including San Diego Wave coach Casey Stoney and striker Jodie Taylor as well as Racing Louisville center-back Gemma Bonner.
  • One of the few acknowledgements in sports that I saw of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was Saturday, was from Virginia’s women’s team yesterday. They wore wristbands around their socks from Katie’s Save, an initiative founded by the parents of Stanford goalie Katie Meyer, who died by suicide earlier this year.

International

  • France: Division 1 Féminine appears to have a new standard NOB/number font.
  • Isle of Man: FC Isle of Man of the English men’s ninth tier also marked World Suicide Prevention Day by laying out 11 shirts on seats representing the 11 people who died by suicide on the island last year.
  • Italy: New shirts for U.S. Fiorenzuola in the men’s third tier. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Scotland: Here is how this season’s Celtic first shirt looks with the large white area on the back required of them for the men’s Champions League but not domestically. (From Kary Klismet)
  • Spain: The website Footy Headlines pointed out that Real Madrid’s men’s team doesn’t have the club crest at the bottom of their numbers like everyone else in La Liga, using this to say that their font is “slightly wrong.” But La Liga’s own regulations only specify the size of the numbers and that they have to be legible, nothing else, and in fact say the design is unrestricted even though there has been a standard font for several years. Auto Racing
  • Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo’s helmet design for yesterday’s Italian Grand Prix was based on a design worn by Italian former MotoGP rider and current sportscar driver Valentino Rossi, but Ricciardo’s verion used his face instead of Rossi’s. (From Jeremy Brahm)

Here’s a look link of the jersey. Also, the Hall gives out trophies to inductees, which you can see in link in the Ticker item.

I find the look of a hooded sweatshirt under a blazer to be incredibly unprofessional. It reminds me of some ridiculous outfits that George Karl would wear.

I really like the thought behind the wearing of the FDNY and NYPD hats, but was very disappointed to see the New Era branding.

It’ll never go away. Same as Nike putting the damn swoosh everywhere, even on throwback jerseys. It especially drives me nuts in the Field of Dreams game…I wish MLB would’ve forced Nike to put the swoosh where Majestic had their patch on the sleeve instead of letting them put it on the chest. I feel for the truly classic uniforms like the Yankees and Cardinals getting marred by that stupid swoosh

Huh – I was today years old when I learned that the University of Western Ontario had rebranded as “Western University” (although not officially changed their name).

Superstition being no stranger to the sports world, will Grisham be strolling to the batter’s box with his barn door open from now on?
