In today’s ticker, who know David Ortiz was a Philly fan?, Dolphins throwing it back 50 years today, a UVa branded beer(?) and much more!

MLB
- David Ortiz, Philly fan? On Friday, before the Padres/Phillies game, the former Red Sox slugger and TV personality was seen wearing a Reggie White Eagles jersey and dancing with the Phanatic.
- Actually, there was quite a bit of interaction with the Phanatic Friday night. (From MichaelMPH)
- “One of the beautiful things about MLB’s Arizona Fall League is not just seeing so many great prospects, but also the beauty of seeing players wear the uniforms of their respective team. Just as it should be in the ASG! :cough cough:” observes Steve Sher.
- While it’s not great, if you’ve ever wanted to colorize black and white MLB photos, here’s a program. (From Johnny). Obviously it’s not just for MLB photos, but the example was of Babe Ruth, so that’s why it’s in the MLB section.
- The John Hancock sign in CF at Fenway Park has been removed, their 30 year “partnership” is over. (From our own Anthony Emerson)
- The weather for Sunday on the East Coast if iffy, at best, so both the Phillies/Padres and Yankees/Astros could be rained out. But did you know at one time there was a proposal to put a retractable roof on Yankee Stadium? (From Texas Trev)

- Japan: Hiroshima City (also in Hiroshima Prefecture) is now offering Hiroshima Toyo Carp license plates. (From Jeremy Brahm)
- College: Switch Pitcher Alert! (from Brad, via Paul). Looks like he’s using an ambidextrous glove too!

Football
NFL
- Today’s NFL Unis (non-standard):
- The Dolphins will wear their aqua throwbacks tonight against the Steelers on SNF. Yes, that sound you hear is everyone saying “This should be their permanent uniform.” They’ll also have the obligatory throwback end zones. Midfield logos too.
- The San Diego Chargers will be sporting their navy blue CR uniforms today against the Seattle Seahawks.
- As noted in yesterday’s lede, the Jets will again be wearing white jerseys over black pants today against the Denver Broncos.
- The Baltimore Ravens will be wearing their black/purple/black combo today against the Cleveland Browns (who will be going orange/white/orange).
- The Tennessee Titans will go navy/powder/navy today against the Indianapolis Colts.
- The Jacksonville Jaguars will wear black/teal/black (with teal socks) against the New York Football Giants.
- The Detroit Lions will wear mono-blue with silver helmets.
- Other NFL News:
- As posted in yesterday’s comments: a “Bills Backer” took a trip to Kansas City for the Buffalo/KC game last weekend, and was repulsed by KC fans doing the “Tomahawk Chop.” From Barton Hall. Quite a discrepancy between his trip to the Negro League Baseball Museum and Arrowhead Stadium.
- In this classic clip of the Dolphins ’72 (perfect) season, we can see the team wore three different jerseys: one aqua and two white — early season games generally featured stripeless jerseys, although sometimes they’d wear two different jerseys in the same game! Although the ’72 team frequently celebrates the achievement wearing striped aqua jerseys, the team only wore aqua tops twice in 1972, so it’s interesting they frequently celebrate the perfect season in aqua tops (which sometimes don’t have stripes).
College
- “Maybe this is nitpicking (but isn’t that what Uni Watch is all about), but it seems that the Big 10 commercial uses a depiction of Old Yankee Stadium instead of New Yankee Stadium. You can look at the photos and see which one it looks more similar to,” writes Matthew Houk.
- UTSA head football CoachTraylor lead the UTSA Football team into the Alamodome with a new custom “210” (area code) on a San Antonio Spurs Fiesta jersey. From Ernie Zuniga
Hockey
NHL
- The Vancouver Canucks have announced TD as their official home sweater advertiser. And luckily, they’re working on finding a road sweater advertiser.
- I’ve steadfastly avoided posting any articles on the NHL’s RR program (mainly because Paul pretty much covered them and he’ll be doing a ranking in his upcoming Substack article), but did you know the Vegas Golden Knights RR jersey features glow-in-the-dark lettering?
Minors/Juniors
- QMJHL’s Chicoutimi Sagueneens went back to the 1970s with retro unis Friday night. Back in blue and green. Coaches got in on the action too. (From Wade Heidt)
- And Friday night the Gatineau Olympiques warmed up in these 30th anniversary celebration throwbacks. (From Quebec Moore)
- ICYMI: The Abbotsford Canucks have unveiled a custom Diwali jersey, and it’s spectacular. Michael Scott approves.
- Last night, Orlando Solarbears goalie Jack LaFontaine was wearing his old Tampa Lightning bottoms. (From Justin Grainger)

NBA
- Looks like BallySports North is using the Utah Jazz’s old logo/colors for their scorebug. (From Kyle Baker)
- The Golden State Warriors debuted their “Run TMC” throwback uniforms on Friday. You can read more about those uniforms here.

- “The Fremantle Dockers of Australian rules football had arguably one of the better uniforms in all of sports,” says Andrew Schmidt. “Not anymore and all because of their new uniform advertiser. Has any advertisement ever ruined a uniform more? I don’t think I’ve seen one that comes close.”
- Apparently Virginia now has its own “branded” beer? Max Weintraub says “I’d never seen this before. But Starr Hill comes from Charlottesville. VA (where UVa is), so it shouldn’t be a surprise.” Wonder what our own Jamie Rathjen thinks about this.
- The new Kūlanihākoʻi High School on Maui has chosen Manta Rays as its team name and mascot and silver and black as its school colors. (From Kary Klismet)

Errata: East Bladen is in N.C., not N.J. Sorry! That was my typo in the submission.
Thanks, Kary. Should be fixed now.
Apparently Virginia now has its own “branded” beer?
As Jim Vilk (might) say: I’d drink that!
I’m aware Wahoowa Pale Ale is a thing (you can get it at football games), but I don’t have an opinion on it.
Ortiz also was sporting a Sixers Iverson jersey during the pregame show last night.
And a Brian Dawkins before Game 5. He could win mayor of Philadelphia right now unless Jason Kelsey or Bryce Harper ran.
Was “Manta Rays” ever considered as the name of the Tampa Bay baseball team?
Manta Rays and Stingrays (along with Pelicans and others) were in the mix, but someone had anticipated this, and got copyrights dibs before the selection process. The team and MLB were not interested in paying.
(Sidebar: when the internet first started, mlb.com led you to a New York law firm. Eventually MLB must have paid for the domain)
Vancouver chose the best possible time to announce a jersey turd. The team is so bad that everyone is so focused on being mad about that so we don’t have time to rage about the TD patch. Seriously tho, sell the team
The UB Bulls lid is incredible! They should wear it full time.
Switch pitcher Cijntje must be from the Dutch Antilles with that surname. All the power in the world to him, as a Dutch baseball fan I am already mighty proud of him. And his glove looks like a thumbs on both sides special.
Wearing New Balance warmups is a common occurrence at Wrexham’s level due to a league-wide sponsorship. You’ll often see coaches wearing NB-branded gear on the sidelines as well, despite clubs having other partners.
When colorizing black & white photos of MLB, I tried one online software and it’s really slick!!It’s called VanceAI Photo Colorizer. Personally I would give vote for this cause it’s based on AI. If you want to have a look, you may try through: link
