- Philadelphia sports greats, including the 76ers’ Julius Erving, the Eagles’ Brandon Graham, the Flyers’ Bernie Parent, and former Phillies Mike Schmidt, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Jayson Werth, and Shane Victorino, all participated in a first pitch ceremony for Game Three of the World Series. - The Penguins and Bruins have revealed their team logos for the upcoming Winter Classic. The uniforms will be unveiled on Nov. 25.
- According to this article, no Penguin is allowed to wear a number higher than C Sidney Crosby’s No. 87.
- The Canucks might be changing the color of their arena seats, which are currently maroon. (From Wade Heidt)
- Speaking of the Canucks, some gross jersey ad news: They’ve extended their media deal with Rogers until 2033. They did so by showing off sweaters with “Rogers” and “Sportsnet” as NOBs, and used 22- and 33-numbered sweaters — numbers that have been retired for Daniel and Henrik Sedin, respectively. - North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s Halloween costume was a full Hurricanes uniform, which he continued to wear yesterday. The uniform had a mismatching sweater and helmet number. The sweater number, No. 75, is for Cooper’s position as the 75th governor of the state. (From James Gilbert)
- Speaking of numerical mismatches, Bruins D Hampus Lindholm wears No. 27, but his gloves have No. 47, which was his number when he played for the Ducks. (From @realBK37)

- A follow-up on the Tartan Turf item in yesterday’s Collector’s Corner: Reader Will Scheibler found this photo series on the installation of Tartan Turf at Empire Stadium in Vancouver back in 1970. Empire Stadium was the first sports facility to have an artificial surface in Canada.

I don’t know where he got it, but my brother had one of those CATS bumpers in the 90s when we were students there. He had it on his laptop lid.
Nice to see Purdue honoring Biggie. Played with him in high school, great kid that overcame a lot of struggles. It was really sad to see him go far too soon.
The new Charlotte Knights logo looks like something they’d throw together to promote a kids club membership for the fans. Seems very middle school in my opinion. The tweet unveiling the uniform also gives off some strong “It’s a boy!” vibes.
Speaking of the Canucks, the company that owns the team has their logo splashed on their jersey. The word “Canuck” represents a Canadian, not a whale.
Why would that city be proud to wear any their team merchandise, I mean they are wearing a company sponsorship for a logo for crying out loud.
Canucks’ Orca logo originated from prior owners. Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment was formed when Seattle billionaire John McCaw purchased a portion from the Griffiths family and then full ownership of the hockey team, the Grizzlies, and the arena. The Canuicks’ colours changed to navy blue, silver, sky blue, and dark red were also the company colours along with the orca.
New owners of Canucks Sports and Entertainment (Aquilini Investment Group) changed the club colours back to the original royal blue and green but elected to keep the Orca. It has never been a good mix of the Orca logo with original blue and green in my eyes. Looks black and white on the beautiful blue and green palate. Team logo doesn’t have the team colours. It looked better with the navy, red etc, colour scheme.
The Canucks should have changed logos when they went back to blue and green full-time in 2007. It was a big uniform change and should have done the logo at the same time. The alternate they introduced in 2008 is the way they should have leaned for the new primary at the time. Modern Stick-in-Rink logo as main and Johnny Canuck used too, but no Orca:

The author of the article about the Penguins and their numbers followed up and said there isn’t a firm policy in place that stipulates no one is to wear a number higher than Crosby. Someone else mentioned that Tomas Vokoun wore #92 while in Pittsburgh the same time as Crosby.
So maybe there isn’t anything stopping a player from picking a number higher than 87 but based on everyone wearing numbers below that, newer players may have assumed that they couldn’t.

44 years ago I sent tape to North Texas St hoping they would offer me a scholarship in football. They wrote back that despite my size (5-5 150 lbs) they felt I could play and wanted me to walk on. I ran around the house happy a Division 1 school even wanted me. I ended up at CW Post, Div 2. All that to say this…. if they had those unis back then I would have never took the field. That lime green is awful.
I wonder if Oz even knows who Randall Cunningham is.
