Uni Watch News Ticker for March 18, 2023

In today’s Ticker, we’ve got an unsatisfying explanation as to why the Red Sox neglected to wear green jerseys yesterday, and more.

Baseball

MLB

  • The Red Sox did not wear their famous green St. Paddy’s Day unis yesterday, as they had for the previous 18 seasons. Previous reporting had also said that the team would wear their green jerseys this spring, and that they would be unaffected by MLB’s new diktat limiting teams to four unis. So what gives? The reason is buried in this article by Boston Globe Sox beat writer Alex Speier: “According to a team spokesperson, Nike no longer produces the green jerseys for teams.” So it has nothing to do with the (asinine) new “4+1” rule, it has everything to do with Nike. Great.
  • Wondering why Shohei Ohtani is wearing number 16 with Japan at the World Baseball Classic instead of the usual number 17 he wears with the Angels? This story has the reason. (From Kary Klismet)

  • This Alabama player wears his batting gloves completely loose. Nomar Garciaparra will be sickened. (From Griffin T. Smith)
Basketball

NBA

  • The Hornets are the only team in the NBA to wear a Jordan maker’s mark on all of their unis (not just “Statement” unis), as Michael Jordan owns the team. With news coming out that he’s about to sell, will the team switch to Nike maker’s marks next season?

College

  • Baylor G Dale Bonner entered the game against UCSB wearing his jersey inside-out, forcing him to switch it on-court. (From Nicklaus Wallmeyer)
  • Reader Andrew Cosentino points out that the only two No. 16 seeds (UMBC and now FDU) to ever beat No. 1 seeds were both Under Armour schools. Strange coincidence!
Soccer

USA

International

  • Canada: New primary and secondary kits for the CPL’s York United. I quite like both of them. (From Wade Heidt)
  • Sweden: New home kits for Djurgården Fotboll of the top-tier Allsvenskan. Launch video here. (From Kary Klismet and Ed Zelaski)
  • German side FC St. Pauli will wear these kits for Jan-Philipp Kalla’s testimonial match. The kits are called “AKAB” (“All Kallas Are Beautiful”), a pun on “ACAB,” itself a reference to St. Pauli’s radical left-wing ethos.
  • New home kit for the El Salvador men’s national team. (From Ed Zelaski)

Unless that Baylor guy has a 3 on the back of the jersey on the inside, it wasn’t inside out (see 4 second mark of the clip). The ref made him take his undershirt off.

Given that Jordan intends to keep a minority share of the Hornets I imagine they’d keep the Jumpman logo.

“According to a team spokesperson, Nike no longer produces the green jerseys for teams.”
First of all, the quote is not in the linked article. Second, does that mean no teams wore green jerseys yesterday? Wouldn’t that be bigger news?
