- “In doing research for an upcoming project on lottery test/sample tickets, I discovered this Maryland Baseball Legends sample ticket with an edited Rick Dempsey picture,” says David Firestone. He also sent along five other examples.

College
- Former LSU player Seimone Augustus yesterday became the first female athlete to get a statue on the school’s campus.
- Color vs. color games feel like they’re a bit more common than they used to be. Latest example: Yesterday’s North Carolina/NC State women’s game, with Carolina wearing blue and State wearing red. (From Gabe Cornwall and James Gilbert)
- Virginia’s women’s team also wore orange at home yesterday against Boston College in grey.
- Tennessee became the school’s third women’s team to receive blue uniforms this school year, after soccer and volleyball and before softball. In that game, opponents Georgia also wore black. (From @Wilds_Lee)

NHL
- The Penguins wore helmet decals for the mental health promotion Hockey Talks last week. The Jets may have also worn them yesterday, I didn’t see any pictures close enough to know for sure, but regardless they put the logo on warm-up pucks. The annual Bell Let’s Talk Day, which is promoted by NHL teams, is coming up on Jan. 25 and Hockey Talks nights take place around the same time, so we might see more of these theme nights.
Minors/Juniors
- The AHL’s San Jose Barracuda and Abbotsford Canucks played a grey vs. green game yesterday. (From Ethan Kassel)
- The ECHL’s Kansas City Mavericks, who are the Kraken’s affiliate, wore Kraken-like uniforms on Saturday. (From Wade Heidt)
- The OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs retired the numbers of brothers and former NHL players Anthony and Chris Stewart on Saturday. The team wore helmet decals featuring their primary logo from the time the Stewarts played for them. (From Wade Heidt)

- The PHF’s Metropolitan Riveters wore mental health awareness jerseys on both days this weekend.
- The PHF’s Connecticut Whale wore their Pittsburgh Pennies tribute uniforms on Saturday. One detail that I don’t think was shown before is the pants have signal flags down the side that spell “WHALE.”
Soccer
International
- Australia: Canberra United have been wearing Indigenous-designed warm-up shirts before A-League Women games this season. The A-Leagues still lag behind the country’s other major sports leagues in not having a regular Indigenous round or national teams that occasionally wear Indigenous designs.
- Brazil: On Saturday, Santos’s men’s team played their first competitive game since the death of Pelé and wore memorial shirts. During the game, players’ numbers were equations resulting in Pelé’s No. 10 and the NOBs were variations of “Thank you, Pelé” or “Thank you, king” in various languages. Pelé played his entire club career with Santos except for a final stint with the NASL’s New York Cosmos from 1975-77.
- England: Yesterday’s Arsenal/Chelsea Women’s Super League match had both teams wearing black armbands for different reasons: Arsenal in memory of striker Beth Mead’s mother and Chelsea in memory of former striker Gianluca Vialli.
- England: Reader Max Weintraub was watching Chelsea’s men’s team yesterday and tells us that his wife thought Chelsea’s ad was a Damar Hamlin tribute. (If you’re unaware, it’s a cell phone and Internet provider.) “At least she notices the uniforms,” Max says.
- England: Tottenham Hotspur’s men’s team wore Lunar New Year-themed warm-up shirts yesterday.
- Japan: New shirts for defending men’s champions Yokohama F. Marinos. (From Jeremy Brahm)

- “Interesting video on King Charles III’s new cypher,” says David Firestone.
- There’s a website that imagines what city landmarks would look like without billboards or other ads. (From Matthew Wolfram)
- The Missouri House of Representatives has adopted a new dress code for female lawmarkers.
- Some members of the Ukrainian army are members of an American-style football league and wear a football-themed patch on their uniforms. (From Russell Goutierez)

Those KC Mavericks jerseys would be such better with a darker crest.
Little surprised, but not really, that “Maryland Baseball Legends” didn’t include Fritz Maisel. Born in Catonsville, Maryland (just outside of Baltimore) he played for the Yankees in the pre-Ruth era. His claim to fame, among others, is that in 1914 he stole 74 bases, which was the team record for stolen bases in a season until 1985, when Rickey Henderson stole 85.
Might also mention another Maryland baseball legend. Some guy born in Baltimore named George Ruth.
RE: Grab bag, the Seattle Metro area doesn’t have any billboards along the freeways. It’s funny (sad) that they are so much a part of our landscapes that I didn’t even notice they weren’t there until someone pointed it out.
re: Seattle – the buildings along the freeway often have big signs for whoever owns them – which in the case of the old Rainiers brewery, is perhaps not so bad…

Just a note on the Santos jerseys (sorry, my inner school teacher coming out) – the numbers on the backs of the jerseys are expressions, not equations. Equations need to include an equal sign with a value on both sides.
