Hockey

NHL

  • Most people know that the Canadiens wore a shoulder patch depicting the 1976 Summer Olympics logo for the 1975-76 season. But did you know the Maple Leafs wore a blue version on their breezers during that same season? I didn’t, and it certainly seems odd that Toronto would honor Montreal that way, but it was the first time Canada had ever hosted the Olympics, so maybe it was more of a Canadian pride thing for the Leafs. Another look here. (Great find by Christopher Hickey)

Minors/Juniors

WHA Nordiques had a patch on their pants for the 1976 Olympics.
WHA Jets (for whatever reason) had the shoulder patches for the 1976 Olympics.

Will, I appreciate you adding these links to the comments. I found these olympic patches on nhl jerseys very fascinating and intriguing. I appreciate this uni community

I wish more hockey teams would try the football helmet treatment (bigger logo – maybe even center stripes for some) on their helmets.

The Giants should trade all their jerseys so they have to switch to the throwback CR white (not that I expect them to have more than one game anyway).

Awkward scene last night in the men’s game between Cornell and Yale, as the camera was set up opposite the court logos, making everything upside down.

This happened for years at the Richfield Coliseum. The Cleveland Force logo would be upside down for the viewers, even for the 1985 MISL All Star Game.

I can’t confirm this, but maybe someone else can. I heard it was because the owners sat on the “other side” (that I *can* confirm) so they could easily be seen on camera, but they also wanted the logo facing in their direction.
