  • A new Atlantic League club that will begin play in Frederick County, Md., this season, has unveiled five finalists for their team name. Since it will take time to get uniforms once they have a name, that linked story includes a photo of the team’s temporary unis.

NBA

  • After wearing No. 11 with the Nets, Kyrie Irving will return to wearing No. 2 with his new team, the Mavs.
  • Bulls C Andre Drummond was wearing a jeweled nose stud on the court during last night’s game. I can’t find any other instances in which he’s done that this season, though he does have a nose ring in his official team photo this year. (From Erik Spoonmore)

College

  • Last night, the NC State women wore BFBS uniforms with pink numbers, lettering, and trim for their annual “Play4Kay Game,” in honor of former coach Kay Yow, who died of cancer in 2009. Wolfpack players also wore inspirational NOBs. Interestingly, their opponent, Virginia Tech, did not wear pink-trimmed uniforms and instead went with white on the road. Some players did wear pink accessories, however. (From Sam Mills)

“…and a logo that features a uniform housed within the state of Minnesota.” Should read unicorn.

I actually don’t mind most of the Spring Training caps this year. I just wish they weren’t mesh back.

MLB/New Era are diabolical with these mesh caps. Cheaper materials but sold at full price. And as we saw last year, the caps don’t even protect your head from the sun.

The Beanpot semifinal between Northeastern and Boston University featured alternate throwback sweaters for both schools, the 80’s look for the Huskies and the 70’s look for the Terriers. Outstanding visuals.

Love that logo at the Rose Bowl for the 50th. Remember how the Rose Bowl, alone among the bowl games, used to use a different midfield rose logo every year? One year they even used yellow roses instead of red. They also had roses in the end zones along with the team name. Then they went the stylized corporate route, and it’s been dull as dishwater since.

That’s as may be, but it seems that the colors are still richer, and the graphics sharper, than any other bowl game’s

    Re: Drummond.

Since NFL, NHL, and MLB players wear necklaces and earrings during the game, I’ve wondered why NBA players don’t. Well, it’s in the rulebook — Rule 2, Section II (b), under the duties of the officials: “The officials shall not permit players to play with any type of jewelry.”

I can’t believe NFL players in particular are allowed to wear necklaces. That sounds like a terrible accident waiting to happen.

I posted the 2nd half pic in another Tweet that showed him without it in. I wonder if he just forgot to take it out, but nobody noticed?

All of the naming options for the Frederick minor league club are decent to fantastic… except for the Screaming Alpacas, which is the name they will almost certainly choose.

“Here’s an interesting look at teams and brands that have similar logos.”

When the Vancouver Canucks unveiled the Johnny Canuck shoulder patch logo for the alternates introduced in 2008, we could not help but notice the logo reminding us of Vachon Bakery. A snackmaker in Canada.

The Cubs had centered numbers on the front of their jerseys in 1972, not ’71. It was their first double-knit set. It made sense to take advantage of a pullover with no buttons to interfere, but the next season they anachronistically put the numbers off to the side again.

I’d heard the numbers were originally meant to be flushed right, but when they realized the manufacturer’s mistake, they said, “Ah, screw it, these are good enough.”

As I recall from watching the game at the time, I think it was the 50th Rose Bowl to be played in the stadium itself, since the first Rose Bowl played there was January 1, 1923

I stand corrected. Now looking back, 2022 was the 100th anniversary of the Rose Bowl Stadium, so 1972 Rose Bowl game was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stadium itself

I’m just happy that the NFL has “seen the light” so to speak and have returned some color and creativity to the Super Bowl logos again. I do understand the thinking and trying to keep the Lombardi trophy the main focus of the game but, it just came off so bland and boring. (and even worse looking when painted on the field).

Don’t mess it up Las Vegas!
