Five and One for College Football for Week Nine

Jimmer Vilk’s 5 & 1

Welcome to the Five and One for 2022!

After more than a decade in hiatus, Jim Vilk (the original “5 & 1” decider) returned! And he’s back again for 2022.

The concept of the 5&1 is simple: Jim will pick five good matchups (not necessarily the five best anymore… he will have categories that will change from week to week) and one awful matchup.
You may agree and you may disagree — these are, after all, just opinions and everyone has one. Feel free to let him know what you think in the comments section.

If you have a game you feel is “worthy” of consideration for the 5 & 1, please either post it in the comments below or tweet Mr. Vilk @JVfromOhio.

Here’s today’s 5 & 1:

Apparently I let the floodgates out when I admitted how much I liked Wazzu’s totally unnecessary but totally cool anthracite uni. This week I came *extremely* close to putting a totally unnecessary but…oh, fine, I’ll say it… totally cool BFBS uni in The Five. Congrats, Tennessee, on doing it right with highly visible stripes and numbers. If I still did Honorable Mentions, you and Kentucky would have gotten one. Now, let’s get to the actual Five Good Things!

__________

5. The “Another Good Mono Black Uni” Game:
Louisiana/Southern Miss

Loving that Cajun script as well, but what’s up with Mr. Cutoff Shorts?

__________

4. The “This Manhattan Has A Brand, Too” Game:
Oklahoma State/Kansas State

The fellas from the Little Apple are known for matching helmets and pants… and I love it when they play a team whose hats and britches don’t match.

__________

3. The “You Know, If The Only Time You Make The Five Is In Throwbacks…” Game:
SMU/Tulsa

…Then maybe it’s time, Tulsa, to bring them back for good!

__________

2. The “Very Simple Can Be Very Good” Game:
Boston College/UConn

You give me three colors as the Eagles did, and I can appreciate an otherwise minimalist uniform.

__________

1. Simply The Best:
Florida/Georgia

Cheers to another great looking cocktail party!

__________

&1.
South Alabama/Arkansas State

Two terrible number fonts, and how many times have the “Red” Wolves ignored their name this season?

__________

See you next week, as we fall back into The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Thanks, Jim! OK readers? What say you? Agree or disagree with Jimmer’s selections? Let him know in the comments below.

Some good looking games in The Five this week. Some would be worthy for #1 some weeks, but hard to beat a classic football uniform match-up like Florida vs. Georgia.

I wish the UF/GA game had more contrast in the helmets, but other than that always good uniform combo.

Jim, I thought the Michigan State-Michigan mono versus mono match up would garner more love from you this week. What were your thoughts?

Sparty got lucky. I had that game pegged for the &1 until I saw the Jags and “Red” Wolves.

I don’t like icy whites with stealth logos and stripeless pants. That’s putting it mildly. Some call it clean. I call it boring, and if they played during the day I’d call it blinding.

I really don’t like them against a mono dark team with stripeless pants. If I still did Dishonorable Mentions, this would have been the one.

Penn State vs. Ohio State in Happy Valley sunshine and it doesn’t make it?

Me: Penn State vs. Ohio State in the daytime is the way college football should be

Also me: It’s too beautiful a day to stay inside and watch TV

It feels like it’s been a long-time since that game was played in daylight in HV. It looked great – that’s the best uni matchup Penn State has on the schedule every other year.

It’d look better if Tosu actually wore gray instead of silver though. And if Penn State could actually win…

I noticed some Penn State players have finally figured out the contrasting socks/tights too.

OSU looks as if they’re wearing all white on a sunny day. If their gray was darker, I definitely would have considered it.
I love both teams’ home uniforms. The roads…meh.

In keeping with the spirit of Phil’s Saturday post, how about making this a color vs color matchup from now on?

I wouldn’t be opposed to color vs. color, but I’m sure Tosu would have that for Michigan if they did it.

I’m a Gator fan, so I am kinda’ biased. But the Florida/Georgia game is always a great game to watch.

How about Tennessee-Kentucky? The 1st Quarter was entertaining, and the black uniforms were AWESOME.

Watching OSU – Penn State, I kept thinking about how much more contrast there would be with the Buckeyes in their red jerseys. This should definitely be a color vs color game.

Florida – Georgia looked good as usual, but man the Gators’ orange is almost red at this point. And this one should also be color vs color every year.

I sighed when Michigan broke out the blue, stripeless blah pants yet again, but the yellow hosiery really does make them look much, much better. MSU looked like garbage. At some point, a team is going to break out an “icy white” uni that is just a plain white helmet, jersey and pants combo with no markings whatsoever.

Florida/UGA has done color vs color, both in the recent past: link, and in the more distant past: link

It’s my understanding that Georgia said they won’t do it again, after the last color vs. color game (which I believe Georgia lost).
