Today’s scoreboard comes from Rich Grote.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date & location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

    June 26, 1960, Cubs at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Game 2. One of the first things I noticed about this game was that it must be the second one of a doubleheader, since games in Kansas City and Milwaukee had already concluded.

    Double daytime doubleheader. Crazy. It was a Sunday I guess…

    Always interested in how people got the date. In this case it was reasonably easy: the next game June 28th was the clue I used to find it. Just not a lot of games where the Giants played in Pittsburgh on June 28.

    The fact that L.A. and S.F. were in the National League but it still only had eight teams narrowed the years down to 1958-61. Then I looked for the Orioles beating Kansas City 9-2, which seemed like it couldn’t happen too often.

    Does anyone know what those SCORE CARD numbers are at the bottom of the scoreboard?

    The scorecards were numbered and if you bought a scorecard at the game and got the one with the winning number, you won some type of give away.

    I use different techniques different times – this one my way in was El Tappe. He was the only Cubs catcher to wear #2 between 1945 (which was too early for this picture) and 1991 (which was too late. Tappe only played for Chicago in one season and only played two games at Pittsburgh that year.

    If Baseball Reference’s play by play is right, this was a weird moment in the game. Bottom of the sixth game tied at 6 and a runner on third with no outs, the Pirates had Bill Virdon bat. Cubs pitcher Seth Morehead threw a wild pitch allowing the runner from third to score and giving Pittsburgh the lead. And then, in the middle of the plate appearance, Pittsburgh pinch hits with Clemente. I can’t think of any reason that bases empty with the lead is a better time to pinch hit than tie game with a runner on third.

    Also of note, this was Ron Santo’s first day in the Majors. He did play in the first game of the double header, so this game was not his debut.
