A Uni Watch Look at Game One of the World Series

For all photos, click to enlarge

This was the scene last night at Uni Watch HQ — the Fall Classic with fall decorative gourds. Felt appropriately festive, because I love the World Series, even when I don’t care about either of the participating teams (as is the case this year). My favorite sport plus my favorite season of the year equals a smile on my face.

Last night’s Series opener wasn’t much of a game from a competitive standpoint, and it lasted a ridiculous 4:06 (I went to bed in the top of the seventh), but there were still plenty of uni-notable details. Here’s a rundown:

• In a disappointing development, Atlanta opted to wear their navy alternate jerseys. I realize we can’t have white vs. grey for every game, but maybe just for Game One of the World freakin’ Series — is that too much to ask?

• As had previously been reported, there were no World Series sleeve patches due to supply-chain issues. They did have cap patches (probably my least-favorite thing about any World Series), but they used a generic logo without a year identifier, instead of the actual 2021 World Series logo:

The last Fall Classic without Series sleeve patches? That would be 1997, when the Marlins wore the Jackie Robinson 50th-anniversary patch and Cleveland wore the Jackie patch at home and the All-Star patch on the road.

And the last Series with a blank right sleeve? I’m pretty sure that would be 1987, when the Cardinals wore a Series patch (the first one ever!) but the Twins did not.

• The umps wore the same generic cap patch logo as the players:

• The game balls, however, had the proper 2021 World Series logo:

• It’s a little hard to see in this next photo, but Atlanta starter Charlie Morton’s cap logo was noticeably yellowed. I assume he’s a superstitious type who’s been wearing the same cap for a while:

• I don’t have independent confirmation on this, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Atlanta oufielder Joc Pederson became the first player in World Series history to wear a pearl necklace:

• Astros skipper Dusty Baker wore a really nice mask design, although it’s too bad about the maker’s mark:

Later on, he had his signature toothpick, which is probably my single favorite accessory of this World Series:

• The first pitch was thrown out by former Astro Craig Biggio, who for some reason wore an orange jersey instead of the white one that the ’Stros wore last night. Even stranger, Biggio’s jersey included a 2021 World Series sleeve patch — which the players themselves are not wearing this year:

• I got a kick out of these Astros fans and their tequila sunrise sportsjackets:

• A few other fans dressed up in space suits (although the fabric wasn’t as “futuristic” as the fabric used by the Astrodome groundskeepers back in the day):

• At one point Fox showed a graphic that included an accent over the second “e” in “résumé,” but not over the first one:

• Prior to the game, commish Rob Manfred presented Angels pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani with something called called the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award, which I’d never heard of before, although it’s been around since 1998. Here’s a look at the trophy (photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images):

Game Two is tonight.

(My thanks to Michael Walker and Trevor Williams for their contributions.)

ITEM! The first-ever Uni Watch poster: Reader Tim Walsh recently suggested to me that our “Hit Sign, Win Stirrups!” graphic, designed by Todd Radom, would look great as a poster. As it turns out, Teespring now offers posters, so I had Todd make a few tweaks to the design (the poster is 24″ x 36″, which is a slightly different aspect ratio than the original T-shirt graphic), and voilà — Uni Watch’s first poster is now available! (Are there any other Uni Watch graphics that you’d like to see in poster form? Let me know.)

As you’re probably sick of hearing about well aware of by now, this design is also available on T-shirts and hoodies.

And if you prefer the classic green/yellow Uni Watch color scheme, our striped toque is now available as well.

My thanks, as always, for considering our products.

The gist of the Gallo link is that a media member commented on his way of getting dressed, not fans.

And how do you watch the game with those gourd stems in the way?!

We moved the gourds while watching Squid Game, to make sure we could see the subtitles.

But for everything else? It’s no big deal. Fine as is.

It’s sort of like the TV equivalent of clickbait: Intriguing, lots of enticements to keep you following along, but ultimately empty calories. Or at least that’s what Mary and I both thought.

Also: There’s one sequence, stretched across two episodes, that includes dialogue in English, and that dialogue was sooooo cringe-inducingly bad. Bad script, bad acting. Made us wonder if all the dialogue in Korean was just as bad, with the subtitles maybe providing a buffer/distancing effect.

I’m surprised the Seattle Metro-Kraken banner was relegated to the ticker. Nuances of what teams decide to put up banners for also seems like it would make for a good lede story in the future (if you haven’t done it already).

Lions fans still wear Stafford jerseys because (1) They spent their hard earned blue collar wages on those expensive jerseys (heck, my stepson still wears a Ndamukong Suh Lions jersey), (2) I couldn’t even tell you what generic Lions jerseys are found in stores these days, as they don’t have a player worthy of that level of recognition, and (3) Lions fans are nostalgic for those great seasons of yesteryear when they had a QB capable of getting them to 4-12.

As a Rams fan, I’m pretty happy to see Stafford on the team. It takes much more than a good QB to get beyond 4-12. Now, if the Rams could just go back to those awesome 80’s era throwbacks full-time…

Order placed for the “Hit Sign, Win Stirrups” poster!!
Thanks for taking my idea & running with it – it’s gonna look great in the home office!

Looking forward to more poster designs in the future?

The more important question is whether Joc’s pearls were real. Certainly he makes enough money for it, and that would make it even cooler in my mind.

I don’t care at all about NASCAR, but that Bubba Wallace quote was maddening. I feel for him. We don’t HAVE TO let advertising rule our lives, you know.

I like that the Kraken waited until the Habs visited to raise the banner – the 1917 Metropolitans beat the Habs to win the Cup. They were in the middle of the 1919 finals when the influenza epidemic ended the series.

I haven’t done the research, but I feel pretty safe in saying that 102 years between visits to a city (Montreal to Seattle) is the new record.

I love that Seattle raised a banner. My twitter feed is full of “not the same team” nonsense, I think its fun and awesome.

The Jets have banners for the Avco Cup winners of the 1970s. The old Jets in the old Arena had a banner for the Winnipeg Victorias Stanley Cup Champions, but the new Jets don’t seem to.

    Presumably not.

The Metropolitans and Jets are a special case. And I suppose the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Millionaires (which I didn’t look into).

No 1915 Vancouver Millionaires Stanley Cup banner in Rogers Arena.

I look forward to a Kraken home game without a banner unveiling.

But Ottawa has 1921, 1923 & 1927 cup banners up. As well as a retired number for Frank Finnigan who played for the original Senators in the 20s & 30s

A few others have suggested that. Either way, I”m not sure why anyone would care.
Different sport, but Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders were both famously particular about their uniforms and had pregame rituals of laying them out and putting them on a certain way. You’d think that in a sport that values routine (often to the point of superstition) as much as baseball, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

It turns out I’ve been misspelling résumé for years as well.

I’ve been putting the accent on the second e but not the first. Which never bothered me because the two e’s are pronounced differently.

Now I’m confused and not sure what to think.

Spelling it with both accents is fine, because that’s correct in the language we borrowed the word from. Spelling it with neither accent is fine, because English doesn’t have accents on vowels and we’re using it as an English word (see also: octopuses). Spelling it with only one accent, regardless of over which E the accent appears, is the only way to spell it wrong in this context. And yes, I’ve committed the same error as Fox myself, many times.

Honestly I’m not bothered by the idea that I’ve been spelling it wrong, I’m bothered by the idea that I’ve been pronouncing it wrong.

There’s no shame in playing poorly for the Yankees; just ask Randy Johnson. The spotlight is exceptionally bright and can incinerate you like an ant under a magnifying glass.
I will be pulling for Joey Gallo in his post-Yankee career.

Texas Ranger fan weighing in on Gallo. He is a really good guy, loved by teammates and fans. He is quirky and deals with ticks and some level of OCD. He is maddening as a player because you see he can be so much more than a slugger who strikes out. He is a gold glove outfielder with perhaps the best arm in the game. He can play centerfield and runs very well (not just for a big man). His problem, in my view, is he thinks too much. The game gets in his head – maybe because of the issues above. I worried when he was traded to NY. He is not a fit there. I hope he lands somewhere else and unlocks the full talent.

Every sport has its flagship franchise; a team where championships are expected, not hoped for. A team where players are expected to be perfect, and improve every day. I think of the Yankees and Lakers falling into this category.

Re the yellowish Atlanta caps: Throughout the playoffs to date, many Houston players have appeared to be wearing caps where the H has yellowed. I wonder if that’s a trick of either lighting or contemporary cameras or broadcasting?

I don’t think Atlanta uses the plain grays in the playoffs anymore. I can’t remember them wearing anything on the road other than the navy alts since Brian Snitker became manager.

The Braves wore their road grays last week in game three of the NLCS. I prefer the grays as well. They might wear three different colored jerseys at home this weekend: red on Friday, white on Sunday, and cream on Sunday.

Good for Larry Mac…crew shirt still fits him well after 30 years!

At least they spared me the agony of seeing those oddly-placed ‘door’ numbers!

About those Hamilton Tiger-Cats practice pants. That is a photo from training camp of DB Adonis Davis. He has just been brought back to the team and is on practice roster.

The training camp pants in the photo are from the old Signature alternate uniforms last worn in games years ago.
