“GEAUX” (Pronounced “GO”)
That’s how fans of the LSU Tigers have been cheering their team on for decades — co-opting the French “eaux” (pronounced “O”) and adding it to the English “Go”. It’s a quaint way of combining the French influence down in, ahem, NOLA, to add a Franglish (Cajun-esque?) flair to the word.
For a change, we have a nice feel good story to kick things off: The jersey you see above, “BURREAUX,” belongs to LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. But if you give it a French flavor, dropping the “ow” for “eaux”, you still have it pronounced “Burrow.” And if you don’t know who Joe Burrow is, well, he probably sealed the Heisman last evening in helping the Tigers to complete a perfect “regular” season — they’ll play for the SEC crown against Georgia next weekend. From all accounts, he’s a perfect gentleman and scholar, and hugely popular with the LSU fans. He played his first three seasons at Ohio State, but transferred to LSU in 2018. He’s loved every minute of it, and the fans have responded in kind. So, imagine when he trotted out wearing the “BURREAUX” jersey. I’ll just let Marty Smith of ESPN set the scene:

Burrow only wore the jersey for pre-game warmups, switching to his regular “BURROW” NOB for the game. Behind Burrow, LSU trounced Texas A&M last night, giving the fans one last “Burrow Show” (or would that be a Jeaux Sheaux?). It was a night to remember.

Guess who watched yesterday’s Iron Bowl and wants to drink 17 gallons of boiling acid? It’s me! HAHAHAHAHAHA *slowly turns into ugly sobbing* *ahem* RIGHT, there’s a column to be had. It’s Rivalry Week, that special time of year when things tend to get a bit… spicy. VERY spicy. Let’s get right into it.
From Thursday:
• A missed Pee-A-T that resulted in Ole Miss’s defeat left the Rebels feeling rather… pissed off. Oh, and Mississippi State wore gold-accented unis for the Egg Bowl game.
From Friday:
• Color-vs-color for Mizzou and Arkansas. I still would like to see the Tigers in gold pants for this matchup, but overall, not too bad on the eyes.
• AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE! Washington State vs. Washington is snazzy enough to be in anyone’s 5&1.
From Saturday:
• Games that should Really be Color-vs-Color; Volume 1. Y’know, with USC vs UCLA, among probably several other examples, I’m surprised that THE Game hasn’t explored that idea, at least, in the modern era (granted, this looks great). Let’s make it happen #tOSUvsUMColorVsColor2020 (okay, maybe with a less-clunky hashtag, but let’s make it happen). Also, I’m just gonna leave this here, and move on to the next bullet point.
• South Carolina wore a hybrid all-black uni, featuring the jersey tops from their throwback games earlier in the season, and their current black helmets and pants. Also in that same game, Trayton Miller spotted some scorebug screwiness.
• Games that should Really be Color-vs-Color; Volume 2. If Georgia Tech must wear gold tops in this game, then put Georgia in red! Or better yet, put both teams in the Falcons’ throwbacks (complete with forced retirement helmet, designed to show bipartisanship to both schools), and let the mayhem sort itself out. Speaking of sorting things out: whoever’s in charge of Georgia Tech’s nameplates needs to get it together. (h/t Larry Luk)
• THIS… now THIS is ART. Just one example out of many from an excellent-looking Thanksgiving weekend.
• Case-in-point: Illinois vs Northwestern is everything right with college football.
• Then hits keep coming: Wyoming vs Air Force? Outstanding!
• Nevada wore their Battle Born uniforms against UNLV (closer look at the helmet).
• Temple Cornerback Freddie Johnson wore camo sleeves against UConn.
• Bucco Bruce lives again. East Carolina wore fauxback helmet decals in their game against Tulsa. Blaise D’Sylva describes them as “more similar to the pirate worn on the 1971 helmet, but not exactly the same.”
• Rex Henry noted that yesterday marked the first time since 2015 that Boston College wore maroon pants in a game. And it made for quite the attractive matchup.
• One of the games I look forward to every year is the Grambling/Southern game (really, for the Battle of the Bands). This year’s matchup was color-vs-color, with Grambling wearing Eddie Robinson-era throwback uniforms.
• This week is basically Contrast Matters: the Masterclass Clinic. Also: I think you got a small smudge on your uniform there. N-no, other side– *sigh* here, let me get it out…
• Only one pic due to time constraints, but Arizona and Arizona State went color-vs-color for the Territorial Cup.
And THAT… will do it for Week 14. And now, much like those sweet potato pies that are fresh out of the oven, we now go into cooldown mode, where the next week or two will be focused on a small handful of conference championships, and of course, TOGIT. There were a number of good candidates, a few of which had to be left on the cutting room floor.
#5 Utah Utes vs. Colorado Buffaloes
For Senior Night, the Utes broke out their 60s silver & red throwbacks, and to great effect. They looked particularly dashing when matched up against Colorado’s black/white/black combo featuring a snazzy helmet decal on their lids. Good looking game, and the Utes advance to the PAC-12 Championship game next weekend.
#4 Alabama Crimson Tide v. Auburn Tigers
The defensive battle that was the Iron Bowl gave us just what we expect: Both teams in their only home/road uniforms: Auburn/Alabama. You could have gone into a coma 30 years ago and woken up yesterday, and if you saw this matchup you’d instantly recognize the teams. Enough said.
#3 Syracuse Orange v. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Another stellar matchup featuring Syracuse in classic orange/blue/orange, and Wake countering with black/white/black. My only complaint, and it’s minor, is the lighting on TV didn’t make the game as vibrant-looking as it truly was.
#2 Nebraska Cornhuskers v. Iowa Hawkeyes
This one could probably be #1, and if you wanted to argue it was, I won’t give you any pushback. Like the Iron Bowl, this game predictably featured the Huskers in white/red/white with Iowa doing their best Steelers imitation. Just a drop dead gorgeous game, and a great game to watch as well!
#1 Michigan Wolverines v. THE Ohio State Buckeyes
Maize and blue. Scarlet and gray. The Big House. It just doesn’t get much better. When you think of college football, this is the game you think about. THE game. No costumes. Perfection.
And now for the not-so-good. I have a couple honorable mentions for this one, including Arizona/Arizona State (the color v. color just didn’t work), Oregon/Oregon State (woof, sorry Ducks, that’s just too much green), and Georgia/Georgia Tech (that gold Tech wore was too light – UGa should have worn red jerseys with the silver britches, and that could have been a Top 5 game). All so close, but the true…
&1 Kentucky Wildcats v. Louisville Cardinals
Louieville decided at the last minute to wear their Mohammed Ali tribute unis (with nary a wisp of Cardinal color) and UK went with blue/blue/black. The weather didn’t help things, and this was just one ugly matchup.
And there you have it. My substitute 5 & 1. I watched more football yesterday and Friday than I usually watch in three weeks, with lots of ESPN Goalline to try to get a glimpse of as many matchups as possible. There were a LOT of mono-vs-mono games yesterday, more than usual I think. No matter what you think of Memal’s picks (or Joe’s, Catherine’s and Jim’s before that), there’s a LOT of work involved in putting this together. I happily hand the baton back to Mr. Malinowski for the remainder of the season now…
As fate would have it, pretty late into the evening a reader named John F. sent me, unsolicited, his own 5 & 1. I told him I’d publish it below. Wish I’d have known he wanted to do this…it would have saved me a bunch of work! Here’s John F.’s 5 & 1:
Honorable Mention – Notre Dame vs. Stanford was probably a better looking game than my #5 pick but I gave Alabama and Auburn points for a great game.
5. Alabama vs. Auburn – Both teams were respectful to the Iron Bowl’s tradition.
4. Syracuse vs. Wake Forrest – Uni-wise, Cuse went from laughable to laudable in 2019 and the Demon Deacons’ black-white-black offered a nice contrast.
3. Iowa vs. Nebraska – The Steelers, I mean Hawkeyes, looked great against the white-red-white Huskers.
2. Pitt vs. Boston College – Pitt’s uni is one of my favorites so they usually make my top five unless their opponent shits the bed with GFGS or a clown costume.
1. Ohio State vs. Michigan – A classic rivalry with classic uniforms made this cranky old man happy. It’s a shame the game did not live up to its history.
…and one
Kentucky vs. Louisville – Anyone who’s read GQ knows that wearing black slacks with a blue jacket is a fashion faux pas. The same holds true for the Wildcat’s eyesore.

This little project was originally begun way back in 2008-09 by Michael Princip, who retired after several seasons, whereupon the project was continued by Tim E. O’Brien. He, too, retired from the tracking, but the project has been ably kept up by the man who also tracks the Pac12, Dennis Bolt.

NFL News: If you’re one of those folks, like me, who thinks the Dolphins should just designate their throwback uniforms as their permanent unis, well, today you’re in luck: they’re wearing them against the Iggles today. … James Winchester, long snapper for the Chiefs, is a tribal member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He’ll wear these shoes today for Native American Heritage Month. The design is the official seal of the Choctaw Nation (from Like Woody). … Check out this awesome Bucco Bruce-era bank (from Frank McGuigan).
College Football News: Yesterday was the birthday of the great Bo Jackson, seen in his Auburn uni here. It’s nice how little that uni has changed over the years (from Goat Jerseys). … The great Blaise D’Sylva continues his college helmet tour with the collection from San Jose State University. … “I know some have a soft spot for helmet carts,” writes Kyle Eilts. “I had forgotten that my alma mater, Fort Hays State University, had one. I not entirely sure when the photo was taken (maybe with the last few years) but I can say the helmet insignia hasn’t been used in quite some time.”
Hockey News: In support of THE Game yesterday, on Friday night, Nick Foligno of the Columbus Blue Jackets wore an Ohio State helmet when he came out for the three stars of the game (from Jakob Fox). … Quick. What’s the worst sweater in Buffalo Sabres history? If you said Turdburger, give yourself a star. … Yesterday afternoon, the Devils back up goalie was wearing a black hat on the bench with heritage/throwback/alternate uniform (good spot by Steve Woj). … “kudos to @MSGNetworks for using the same shade of red for the score bug to match the #devils throwback sweaters,” tweets Al N. NBA News: Interesting take on a giveaway here: last night, the first 3,000 fans at the H-To…, er, Houston Rockets game received a towel in the shape of the team’s new ‘City’ jersey (from Ignacio Salazar). That was of course because H-Town unis were worn in the game. … Great spot from Jeff Cook who noticed the first “8” of the Indiana Pacers’ Goga Bitadze’s “88” is upside down. … Yesterday I took a lot of shit for my “SHOOT or SHITE” ratings for the NBA’s ‘City’ jerseys, some of it deserved. One thing I commented on was the shitty font the Bucks use. Apparently it’s an homage to Milwaukee tools, so at least there’s a reason for it. Still a shitty font tho (thanks to Andrew Wagner for pointing it out). And apparently the font is named “Millie” (from Brian Feeney).
College Hoops News: Ooooohhhh. We don’t get to see them often (at least round these parts), but Hawai’i broke out some beautiful throwback uniforms on Friday night (from Charles George). … Who wears short shorts? Yesterday the entire starting lineup of UNCG Basketball went with rolled shorts against Georgetown Hoops (from bryanwdc). … Texas A&M Corpus Christi debuted new black uniforms last night (from Mike Vamosi).
Soccer News: On Friday, the Brighton & Hove Albion women’s team had their #RainbowLaces campaign where they wore rainbow NOB. They also had rainbow striped flags and their twitter profile has a rainbow flag around their logo (from Jakob Fox). … Also from Jakob: yesterday both Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion were wearing black armbands in honor of former Liverpool player Johnny Wheeler who died earlier this month. … Still more from Jakob: Players on both Chelsea and West Ham wore black armbands Saturday in recognition of the two members of the public that lost their lives in the London Bridge area on Friday. The refs have armbands as well.
Grab Bag: National Lacrosse League season opened of Friday. Wade Heidt has a bunch of observations: The NLL started their season with 2 games on Friday night. Though no changes to jerseys and shorts for those teams, 3 of the 4 teams in action Friday have updated the decals on their helmets. The Colorado Mammoth have some chrome on the helmet this year; The Calgary Roughnecks have more silver in their new decals compared to last year; The Saskatchewan Rush helmets are more green this year than in the past with the new decals; and, in addition, the Rush have released a 5th Anniversary logo celebrating their time in Saskatchewan. The Rush moved to Saskatoon from Edmonton in 2016.

1. Love the Jeaux Burreaux homage to Cajun Country.
2. I’m biased as hell, but UNC/NCSU is another rivalry that should be color v color. Especially if NCSU goes all-red, the Carolina blue would contrast it well.
3. The Northwestern/Illinois game would have been made so much better if NU hadn’t gone stormtrooper. Purple lids or pants would have popped against the navy/orange.
Lots of good uni-based matchups yesterday, and relatively few regrettable one-offs. One point for sanity!
Games that should be color vs. color:
1. USC vs. UCLA
2. None besides that one
Disagree. Utah/BYU works. So would Georgia/Georgia Tech, Alabama/Tennessee, and several others.
Games that should be color v color:
– any game where there is sufficient contrast between the principal school colors of the 2 teams involved… so, anything besides garnet (Arizona State) v navy blue (Arizona).
Agree. It’s all about contrast. And sure UNC could probably wear their light blue every game, but there is also something about tradition. I was getting worried during the time UCLA was with Adidas, since their light blue was getting darker. Seems like UA has settled on a good color now,
Would love to see OSU & Mich do color on color with their home uniforms too. Definitely enough contrast to make it happen.
I would be curious to see Notre Dane and USC attempt it; perhaps for the 100th game at the Coliseum in 2024.
Agree with Daniel Tarrant. The whole reason USC v UCLA is color v color is for 40+ years, they were literally both the home team when they both played at the Coliseum.
Just having sufficient contrast is not a reason for a game to be color v. color. An intra-state rivalry game can make a case (DJ’s intra-state examples are good ones), especially if it was at a neutral site, but otherwise, there isn’t any reason for OSU v. Michigan, or just any other “big” game to be color v color.
I went to LSU and loved going there with all the great history, but they tend to take the -EAUX stuff too far.
I’m also from Wisconsin, and the year LSU played the Badgers at Lambeau Field, many fans insisted on calling it Lambeaux. I wanted to slap them around. You can do that to your own stuff all you want, but don’t mess with another team’s traditions.
Well, no – your don’t impose your stuff on other people’s traditions. Sports-related or otherwise.
Navy @ Houston would’ve easily cracked the Top 5 if the Cougars hadn’t gone mono-red, and Navy’s britches were…navy.
The cool thing about the Burrow thing is that it was his idea.

I’m a huge fan of color v color when there’s contrast, with the best example being the USC/UCLA game last week. I don’t like this tread of games doing it just because they have different colors. The ASU/Arizona game was awful. The Grambling/Southern worked because of the light blue of Southern. Missouri/Arkansas also was good. And Ohio State/Michigan doesn’t need to change a great look and go color v color.

It’s good that you recognized your reviews for the NBA City jerseys could have been better, based on the feedback. The OKC city uniform has a whole lot of significance for the city and unfortunately those details were completely ignored in the review, which I felt was disappointing. Sometimes these things happen but it looks like you took it as a learning experience, which is good.
We can all keep it civil by critiquing the content and not the person writing it.
One commenter yesterday seemed to think the criticism was all personal, and I think very little of it was. I am grateful for all the work and personal sacrifice that goes into Uni Watch, but I was also very disappointed with the post as part of a larger annoyance with some of the work here. My criticism is not merely that some of the inspiration behind the artwork was ignored/dismissed, but that the whole post seemed to be more about your personal gut feelings toward the uniforms than balanced critique. This was exacerbated by what seemed to be a very flippant and arrogant tone (as has been noted many times already). Perhaps because the City unis are an unnecessary annual cash grab, Uni Watch seems to believe that readers will appreciate this tone at the expense of appreciation for the designers who work on them or the cities/events they represent. But I don’t. While I appreciate the occasional call-out of unrestrained, unabashed commercialism in our society, I’m here for the unis far more than the opinions (no offense; I just like the unis way more). I’d rather read about the unis, their designs, and their stories, not personal preferences or broad gripes. And maybe just take a more gracious tone with all of it … there’s all sorts of BuzzFeed-style articles around the internet to satisfy that purely visceral instinct.
^^ In summary, it’s hypocritical to dismiss the City unis as consumerism not art, but then ignore all the actual art that went into them (even if you feel it’s purely exploitation). And just be nicer sometimes.
Point taken. However, if the style wasn’t evident, much of yesterday’s lede was meant to be tongue in cheek. I think we can all agree that no team needs four (or five or six) different unis, and while some of the City uniforms may indeed be well done in terms of “repping” a City (I’ll give you that I missed the Milwaukee font similarity and the OKC bombing), most of them are just lame excuses to sell more overpriced polyester merch. If the NBA truly wanted to serve the communities, they should do more of the “I AM A MAN” Memphis unis, and the OKC=type remembrances, and SKIP giving the other 20+ teams an extra uni set, just because they can.
I should have stated upfront my review was going to be more of one from a purely aesthetics standpoint (i.e. judging the uni solely on its merits); as most of you know, reading the corporate-speak that accompanies these releases is nigh-on vomit-inducing, and I’ll be the first to admit I simply didn’t have the time to traipse through all 30 to find the ones that actually involved some deep thought when considering the uniform. To wit, here’s how Nike describes the Mav’s Fresh Prince uni:

In sum, apologies on not deeply researching each and every City kit. I thought it might be a fun way to take a less-than-serious look at the ridiculously insane number of unis (and c’mon, you know most of them, if not all, are simply designed to part fans from their money) out there, muddying team identity in the process.
Hey Phil, thanks for the thoughtful reply. My issue was really not so much that every uni wasn’t thoroughly researched — that would certainly be a different, all-consuming project. Rather, the issue really was ultimately the “be nicer” piece. Which sounds like a real looking-down-my-nose thing to say. But as you seem to suggest, it felt like most of the piece was just a screed against the NBA’s blatant commercialism, which is a fine thing to point out, but not what brings me back to the site. In other words, that corporate greed isn’t enough to eliminate all the joy out of the alternate uni endeavor for me. Some of the unis really don’t feel like a whole lot of effort was put into them, but enough of them do and/or are interesting enough that if I’m gonna take the time to read about all of them, it will be to celebrate them, not to shake my fist at the league. Keep up the awesome work though; been a fan for many years. Just know that I and probably other readers care more about what’s great about uniforms than expressing frustrations about impurities in the uni world (even if it’s a worthy task sometimes).
^^ In summary (again), it didn’t feel tongue-in-cheek … It just felt angry and cynical. If it’s more about blowing up the league’s moral compass than celebrating unis, then I’m gonna skip that 99 times out of 100. And it feels like this horse is beaten here so often; I think we all get the point and can move on to something worth celebrating instead of doubling down.
In Ticker item about the New Jersey goalie wearing the black hat on the bench, also noticeable that the Devils training staff did not switch up their jackets. Wearing the black jacket.
Would have been nice for the Devils to have training jackets that matched the uniforms. Did not bother with attention to detail. Other teams such as the Flames and Jets have alternate training outfits for on the bench when the teams are wearing their alternate uniforms.
Yes, I understand that the Devils will not be wearing these throwbacks a lot this year. Not a great excuse. The Canucks are wearing their black throwbacks only 3 times this year and managed to get their training staff in matching gear.
The Nevada Battle Born helnet is the design from the NV state flag. UNR, as we say in southern NV, has adopted the state’s slogan of Battle Born as their own. Not really sure if it’s disrespectful to the state flag.

What I would like to see from Uni-Watch as a whole (stemming from yesterdays poorly received / critiqued NBA jersey) is fresh voices and a site overhaul.
This site has felt very much like an “old-boys” club and I cannot remember when the last time a female guest writer was featured to review a jersey release or had an opportunity to run a feature article (other than be interviewed about a uni-centric item / art project).
This site has allowed many people the chance (myself included) to express themselves in a variety of ways, however, it has felt as of late redundant and predictable.
I know metrics may skew to a specific demographic, but it wouldn’t hurt to bring in a younger, fresh voice periodically or even on a consistent basis to enlighten and possibly entice readers to really open their eyes and minds.
What difference does the sex, age, race etc of a reviewer matter?
good job on those garbage city uni’s phil. but the 5-1 without the apple cup? it was easily the #2, if not the 1. i dug unc-ncs and baylor-kansas too, but i can accept their omission. but syracuse-wake? i applaud the outside the box, but woof do they need to go.
Just catching up on yesterday’s entry and noticing some similarities between Philadelphia’s “City” uniform and an opposing team I included a couple years ago when I sent Phil an Indiana Pacers Uni Concept and showed Indy playing against a 76ers team wearing a cream-colored uniform, with the full city name “Philadelphia” spelled out and red-white-and-blue trim very similar to what’s found on the current Sixers’ city uniform.
