Sunday Morning Uni Watch

By Phil Hecken and the SMUW Crew

Anyone ever see the movie Pleasantville? You know, the one where it’s like half black & white and half in color? Yeah.

That’s pretty much what yesterday’s Eastern Michigan University vs. SUNY Buffalo game looked like.

For those who are not aware, EMU plays on a gray field, which is, in and of itself, both stupid and annoying, but it is what it is. They normally wear kelly green uniforms on said field, and their opponents are normally attired in white jerseys, so at least there is plenty of contrast on said gray field.

Well, yesterday, for some reason, EMU’s opponents — SUNY Buffalo — chose to wear gray jerseys on that gray field. That was bad enough in still photos, but on TV and in live action, the Bulls were nicely camouflaged basically invisible:

It wasn’t just one play either — it was basically that way for the whole game:

Take a look at the splash photo once again. Notice anything? Look closely. Yep — the unis, being the same color as the field, actually had ESPN’s graphics running right through them:

Not only did the Bulls wear gray tops, they also went with black hats and britches, rendering their entire outfit the equivalent of a walking black-and-white tv image. Playing on a gray field only made it worse. I don’t want to say this was easily the worst looking game of the season, but if it’s not, it’s pretty damn close. I write these intro’s before I get Terry’s part and Memal’s 5 & 1, so if this ISN’T the “AND 1” I’ll be shocked.

Who approved SUNYB going black/gray/black anyway? They’ve got a perfectly decent blue/white/blue uni that would have been fine (they also have a mono gray uniform, which would have been even worse). They should be required to wear some combination of white and blue, not black and gray. I mean, at least in Pleasantville, they knew how to use gray to bring out the color, not hide behind it.

I’ll go back to screaming at the clouds now (OK Boomer). Here’s TJ:

Sunday Morning Uni Watch
By Terry Duroncelet, Jr.

From Saturday:

• Seldom-seen purple unis for Clemson against Wofford (that’s such a university-sounding name: WOFFORD. I like it).

• Sad to see that Georgia decided to not go color-vs-color against Florida, as the Cornmother intended (although the last two matchups from 2017 and 2018 weren’t CvC, either). It just doesn’t hit the same. I guess you can say I was red with rage and blue with sadness. One of these days, I will be struck down for these horrible puns. Also: Spectrum continues down their path of confusion (like some of the people who have their services that don’t know if they’re called Spectrum or Charter): they used Florida Atlantic’s logo instead of the Florida Gators logo (H/T @rossteach33)

• Several people noted how Rebels QB John Rhys Plumlee was MISSing the ‘Ole’ on his helmet decal in Saturday’s game against Auburn (pic from What The Helmets).

James Gilbert also notes some weird decal business with Virginia Seven Virginia Tech.

• Maryland wore their throwbacks against Michigan.

• Notre Dame and Virginia Tech treated us to a sweet-looking game yesterday.

• As did Wake Forest and NC State.

• And the even more colorful version of that game? Purdue vs Nebraska.

• Rice wore helmet wings for their 100th Homecoming against Marshall.

• Kansas wore new one-off uniforms in their game against Kansas State. From JJ Sledge on Twitter: “Part of a one-off uniform designed by KU students called “One Team” for the K-State game. Throwback jayhawk logo, gray jerseys with 2 different sleeve colors and blue pants. Supposed to signify unity across the school’s students, sports, etc.”

• Illinois looked like someone turned up the saturation slider on a TV to max. Not that that’s a bad thing, of course.

• Astro Boy: College Football Edition. I loved Central Florida’s UCF In Space uniforms that they wore against Houston. BTW, here’s a quick what’s-the-occasion Tweet from the Knights themselves.

• Army wore the insignia of the 4th Infantry Division on the back of their helmets in their game against Air Force (the 4th is based in Fort Carson, Colorado).

• Not to be outdone by SMU’s Dallas alts, Colorado State wore their State pride uniforms against UNLV.

• Oklahoma State has been a favorite of mine for a long time now in terms of uniforms, and their helmets in their game against TCU was the latest example of why. The game itself was also a black-and-white affair.

• Rare navy toppers for Georgia Tech.

• Snazzy throwback uniforms for Arizona.

• BYU wore their royal-trimmed white unis against Utah State, who went BFBS.

• Memphis actually looked like Memphis??? WHAT WEIRD TIMELINE IS THIS???

• • •

Thanks, TJ! OK, now for the rest of your SMUW…

Joe Ringham 5 & 1

Memal’s 5 & 1

Following in the footsteps of the original “5 & 1,” Jim Vilk, Catherine Ryan after him, and finally Joe Ringham, for 2019 we have a new “5 & 1” (five good looking and one stinker) uni-vs-uni matchups — Michael “Memal” Malinowski. Like Joe, Catherine & Jim, Memal will pick HIS 5 best looking/1 awful matchup, and occasionally have some honorable mentions (both good and bad). You may agree and you may disagree — these are, after all, just opinions and everyone has one. Feel free to let him know what you think in the comments section.

Here’s Memal

• • •

We turn to the final month of the regular season and prepare ourselves for playoff deciding match ups and some of the renewal of some of the fiercest rivalries! Onto the list…

++++++++++++++++++

Honorable mention: Michigan at Maryland

The Terps looked like a real football team! If Michigan had packed their maize pants instead of their rather plain whites this would have cracked the top 5.

++++++++++++++++++

5. Mississippi State @ Arkansas

The Razorbacks look their best when it.looks as if they just stepped out of their Southwest conference days. The Bulldogs in their mono white set and maroon and silver stripes looked sharp against red/red/white of Arkansas!

++++++++++++++++++

4. Cincinnati @ East Carolina

This game was a thriller between the Pirates in purple/purple/white and the Bearcats in red/white/red. I really liked the how the skull and crossbones looked taking on the red metallic lids of Cincinnati.

++++++++++++++++++

3. Texas State @ Louisiana Lafayette

I wasn’t aware of the Bobcats look before I took this article over and just about every week I’ve wanted to feature them, but none of their opponents have looked as good as the Ragin’ Cajuns did in their mono-red set. I especially like how the bobcat head on the left side of Texas State’s helmet doesn’t face forward since the ear wouldn’t fit into the outline of the state of Texas.

++++++++++++++++++

2. Florida vs Georgia

Considering this game has been played in Jacksonville just about every year since 1933, this is one of those rivalries that doesn’t look too different from year to year. Considering both these teams have great uniform sets we’re lucky we get to annually enjoy what is always a hotly contested game between a pair of great looking teams.

++++++++++++++++++

1. Oregon State at Arizona

I’m a sucker for unique stripe patterns and there was some great stripe action going on in this game! I don’t know which detail I enjoyed more; the stripes going down the shoulders for the Beavers or the Wildcats having blue and red stripes on their helmets and pants. Very solid uni-match up!

++++++++++++++++++

And because someone has to be the sacrificial lamb…

&1 West Virginia @ Baylor

I thought there weren’t any atrocious looking games this week, so I went with this game which reminded me of middle school football where you played other kids in your grade and everyone wore the same color helmets, the same color pants, and the only way you told the teams apart was maybe the jersey color. And it doesn’t help that both team’s helmets look so dull, especially Baylor. I don’t know when they went away from the gold helmets of the RGIII era, but they couldn’t go back to it fast enough!

Duck Tracker

Welcome to the 2019 Oregon Ducks Uni Tracker. This little project was originally begun way back in 2008-09 by Michael Princip, who retired after several seasons, whereupon the project was continued by Tim E. O’Brien. He, too, retired from the tracking, but the project has been ably kept up by the man who also tracks the Pac12, Dennis Bolt.

Here’s this week’s Uniform Combo for the Ducks (you can click to enlarge):

You can read about this uniform, and MUCH MORE, by checking out the Duck Tracker here!

Thanks Dennis!

And In Hockey News…

The Predators Unveiled Their Winter Classic Sweater

Yesterday, in what the twitter world at first thought was a leak — photos of a huge advertisement on a Nashville building — turned out to be just a prelude for the Nashville Predators to show off their Winter Classic uniform jersey.

Here’s another look:

Interesting wordmark, yes? In case you’re wondering, that is actually paying homage to the old style of the Nashville Dixie Flyers, a minor league team that played in the Eastern Hockey League from 1962 until the franchise folded in 1971.

Nice, right?

Of course, none of the photos (or unveiling) show pants or socks, and none of them show the back of the jersey.

As fate would have it, Paul & I were able to preview these uniforms earlier this week and we both got photos of the jersey front and back (unfortunately, there were no pants/socks to preview), but here’s how that jersey looks:

If you scroll back up to the splash or group photo above, you can see what the two sleeve patches look like. They’ll have a dark blue and gold “predator” on one sleeve and the Winter Classic patch on the other. If you look closely at the collar in the photo on your left above, you’ll note the guitar fret motif and the date of the WC (1/1/20):

The New Year’s Day game will feature the Predators against the Dallas Stars, who will be the home team, and the game is being played in the Cotton Bowl. The Stars will also have special uniforms for this game, but they’ve yet to unveil those. Hopefully we’ll get a look at the pants/socks for both the Predators and the Stars before the actual game.

    ‘zona got their butts kicked yesterday. i hope that doesn’t mean they’ll avoid those throwbacks, which are outstanding.

    Colorado State wearing effectively no school color vs UNLV in way too much red looked really bad

    In the B1G uni tracking section, Ohio State did not have a “bye”. The Buckeyes were “off”, they were “idle”, they had an “open week”. But they absolutely did not have a bye, nor did any of the other college/universities that did not play yesterday.

    You should tell Ohio State that, based on their multiple uses of the word “bye” here : link

    Would “THE bye week” be better?

    Aw Yeah! Time for some College Football Uni Tracking Canadian Rules Style.

    The road to the Vanier Cup is underway. Will look at more games than usual today as I want to get all the playoff games from Saturday in. So less talk and more rock!

    Atlantic (AUS) Semifinal:

    -Bishop’s Gaiters went purple over grey at home in Lennoxville, QC. Mount Allison Mounties wore white over garnet.

    Quebec (RSEQ) Semifinals:

    -Montreal Carabins wore their blue/black/black combo at home. McGill went white over white.

    -Laval Rouge et Or looking more like the “Noir et Rouge” at home in Quebec City. Wearing a black/black/red combo. Concordia Stingers wore white over maroon.

    Ontario (OUA) Semifinals:

    -Western Mustangs went with their silver/purple/purple combo at home in London. Waterloo Warriors went white over black.

    -Saskatchewan Huskies wore green over green at home in Saskatoon. Alberta Golden Bears went with the yellow/white/yellow combination.

    link

    Thanks as always.

    I don’t know anything about the Western Mustangs, but are they wearing two shades of purple on those pants, and on purpose, or is it the photo?

    Thanks ThresherK! I appreciate that you enjoy the posting.

    It is really just one shade of purple for Western. Does have to do with the tailoring on their Under Armour uniforms.

    What drives me crazy about Western right now is their insistence on going purple over purple as their primary home look. In recent past, they often wore white pants or grey pants with the purple jersey. Looks better to me with the white or grey pants.

    link

    I like purple more than our blogmaster, but yeah, purple over purple is more than I need to see.

    I’m surprised Bishops (Quebec) is playing in the Atlantic semi-final. Mind you the Atlantic schools have unfortunately become very weak, so maybe a little Quebec infusion is needed.

    Thanks again Wade

    1. Memal: The “&1” portion of the 5&1 is to showcase a hideous uniform matchup. On a day where Buffalo wore gray ON A GRAY FIELD at Eastern Michigan, and Kansas wore light gray againt K-State in white, you picked a fairly innocuous matchup between Baylor (mono-green with yellow gold trim) and WVU (navy/white with yellow gold)? Good contrast, nothing too garish. And you had Miss State/Arkansas in the Top 5, even though they had identical pants and the same colors? Okeee…
    2. Why did Arizona ever get away from the Tomey era uniforms? Those are ideal. No gradients, no big clunky bespoke numbers, asymmetric helmet stripe.

    He claims Baylor and WVU had the same color helmets and pants, and that Baylor has a “dull helmet”.

    There’s nothing I can add to that.

    No, he said the game reminded him of a kids’ game where both teams wore the same helmet colors. While I frequently question his choices, this criticism is simply wrong.

    Agreed. Every week, there seem to be odd choices. I am all for asserting your opinions, but something is off.

    Agreed. I’ve quibbled with some picks here and there in the past, but with his picks I’m left regularly flabbergasted.

    Yeah, I don’t get it either. Does he see green and blue as the same color? WVU-Baylor was pretty nice looking. Maybe not the most exciting but far from the most hideous of the week.

    Right but picks a game with all white and red vs red and white, all red vs gold white and burgandy and a dark blue vs white and dark blue match up for top 5?!

    Only thing I can figure is that what he’s really talking about (and objecting to, for whatever reason) is that both Baylor and WVU have similarly minimalistic uniforms. This obviously has nothing to do with the colors, though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
    It’s a pretty nonsensical criticism, especially given some of his other choices.

    I know this is hard for some, but…people have different opinions about uniforms. There is no objectively “right” or “correct” uniform. Some people like grey. My favorite uniforms are, actually, grey. Grey is a neutral. So is black. They are no different than white uniforms, which, for some reason don’t get referred to by some eye-roll inducing group-think nickname, like “white for white sake.” He doesn’t hate grey. It’s a subjective opinion piece. Deal with it.

    It’s “Denver University,” not University of Denver.

    Y’all don’t call any of the Ivy League schools with the passive voice, do you?

    Sorry, I wasn’t sure if this was a sarcastic comment or not by the tone of your post. But it’s the University of Denver, or DU abbreviated. From a DU alum. Not dissimilar from the old Big 8 schools. NU, KU, OU, etc.

    my dad did grad work at DU and i’ve lived near it for most of my life – can see the campus from my driveway. the signage even says University of Denver

    Thank you Arizona (finally), thank you Oregon. And, of course, thank you Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Kansas State, and USC for looking like teams that represent your schools. But mostly, thank you Phil, Terry, Memal, and the rest of the SMUW crew. Love Uni Watch on Sunday mornings in the autumn.

    Calling them “SUNY Buffalo” throughout is a really weird move and I’m not sure if it’s meant as a subtle insult but it really got under my skin.

    Regardless, I’m confused by the reaction to their color choice. Does Boise State get flak for wearing blue to camouflage with its turf? It’s the smart thing to do.

    Does Boise State get flak for wearing blue to camouflage with its turf?

    They get it from me. It’s not the smart thing to do, it’s the “we’re not confident in our talent or our game plan so we’ll resort to hiding” thing to do. Trick plays are great, trick uni/field gimmicks are lame.

    “Calling them “SUNY Buffalo” throughout is a really weird move and I’m not sure if it’s meant as a subtle insult but it really got under my skin.”

    Not even sure if this was intentional or ignorance…

    “ Does Boise State get flak for wearing blue to camouflage with its turf? It’s the smart thing to do.“

    Seriously?

    Yes
    All the time. The ncaa tried to ban it

    There was nothing wrong with Baylor/WVU. Certainly in no universe should it have been the &1 with the Eastern Michigan thing happening yesterday. Both teams in school colors shouldn’t be an &1.

    There’s an open tag in the Grab Bag section that ties the Tudor football and Brazilian Men’s Volleyball items together into one link.

    Its something about the gray playing surfaces that make the jerseys pop..like watching a Nets game now, the uniforms almost look 3d and they pop of the field in the pics posted here for the college game.

    Really liking the gloves the Predators will wear for the Winter Classic.

    Understand main crest is a nod to the Dixie Flyers, but just saying that throwback sabre tooth tiger head would have looked great as the main crest.

    Was there any special reason Clemson wore their mono-purple unis yesterday? I thought that they had all but discarded those as part of their repertoire

    Check the “thread” in the College Football ticker on Clemson. Should explain the entire purple uni deal.

    I like the Ravens look tonight, clean, everything works. Prefer if the numbers had purple trim with this look, but that’s very minor.

    The Browns/Broncos game was quite the eye sore.
