Nice-looking color-on-color game last night in the NIT, as Dayton wore red and Iowa wore black. And this one had an interesting backstory.

Dayton was the No. 2 seed and would normally have been playing this game at home against Iowa, the No. 7 seed. But the First Four NCAA games were being held at Dayton, so the game had to be played in Iowa. Dayton packed their red road uniforms, since they were, you know, playing on the road. But the authorities — not sure if it was the NCAA or the NIT — decreed (a) since Dayton was higher-seeded, they were the designated home team, and (b) since Iowa was the designated road team, they could not wear their home whites — even though they were playing on their home court against a team wearing red.

Seems like a really silly ruling, but I’m generally in favor of color-on-color college hoops games, and I particularly like the way this one looked, so it’s all for the good. The real injustice is that Dayton, which should have had the advantage of playing in front of their home fans, had to go on the road and ended up losing, 84-75.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I had to appear in court yesterday on a petty bike-related charge (it was dismissed). As we were all sitting there waiting for the judge, a guy walked in wearing a Nike swoosh cap and sat down. The bailiff said — as he’d said to everyone else who’d entered the courtroom wearing a hat — “Sir, please remove your cap.” But the guy either didn’t hear him or didn’t realize the statement had been directed at him. So the bailiff said, much louder this time, “YOU, IN THE NIKE HAT — REMOVE THAT NIKE HAT.” I enjoyed that. ”¦ Here are the winning entries from the Toronto Star’s Maple Leafs third jersey design contest (from Roch Smith). … It’s a little hard to see, but Giants infielder Robby Thompson once wore a mask in the field (good find by David Arnott). … Very last item on this page describes a typo on the Johnson City Cardinals’ Appalachian League championship rings (from Elena Elms). … Yesterday I Ticker-linked to a discussion-forum thread that showed some early Buffaslug concepts. Paul, I know this isn’t the focus of today’s entry, but what was the charge against you, and why was it dismissed?

As an avid cyclist who’s dependent on having a bicycle and using it to get to work every day, and who will probably move back to NYC one day and continue to cycle, I’m wondering what kinds of things can land you in court.

Running a red light in Prospect Park (where there are no cars for most of the day and where red lights were unenforced for bikers for, oh, 20 years). It was a cold Feb. afternoon — about 27 degrees — and there were maybe five people in the entire park, two of whom were the cops who ticketed me. It was one of those “Let’s send a message” things — they ticketed a few hundred of us over a the course of a week. Total nuisance thing. They were all dismissed.

I don’t mind. Going to court was interesting. Citizenship sometimes entails small detours like this.

That’s totally not me. I don’t own bike shorts, I don’t wear the funny little shoes the snap into the funny little pedals, I don’t shave my legs, etc. I’m not a biker guy; I’m just a guy who bikes.

I don’t particularly like biking in traffic, which is why I bike every day in Prospect Park, where there are no cars (except during the morning and evening rush hours, which is not when I go).

I don’t think you would insult pork like that either (let alone be wearing purple…)…all in good fun! Cheers!

“I’m not a biker guy; I’m just a guy who bikes”

    same here.

my attire looks more like i’m going to play basketball: baggy shorts, t-shirt, sneakers

i also hate being in traffic, but have to on my way into work. i stay as far to the side as i can, take back streets when i can, yeild to both vehicles and pedestrians… generally try to be as stealth-like as possible (and have gotten into many a discussion with the “cycling elitist” type over how i should be out in front and seen by everybody, and such. you know… the folks that get honked at and “doored” once a month, telling me how i should ride. lol). however, i do run red lights and stop signs when there are no cars or peeps around.

It is a telling sign in our sick society, that historically for Roman Catholics: men hats off/women hats on in church. Unless you’re the guy up front chanting & wearing the dress, er um — cassock. But in a synagogue, it’s just the opposite. Proves how lame humans truly are. As for spending tax payer $ to send a message(not that I want you fined for that bs)? gee, golly. More dumbing down continues. Or was the message — no sponsored apparel in my fucking courtroom. . ..

    Thanks for the info, Paul! Here in Tokyo the biggest nuisance is that bicycles have to be registered with the police, so on rare occasions they’ll stop cyclists and then pepper them with questions while they look up the registration number. Somehow “undesirables” like teenagers, hippies, otaku, and people with the wrong skin color get hassled more often than the odds would warrant. ^^;

How did you get it dismissed? No proof that you actually ran the light? Or did the cop not show up?

In this particular court, it’s routine for the judge to toss petty offenses. “You shouldn’t run the red light. Do you know that now? Dismissed.”

“”what kinds of things can land you in court”

In my experience as a cylinng guy (with the funny little shoes and everything), being the low hanging fruit when there’s a quota to fill is the most common reason.

I’m almost willing to bet the manufacturer of UNC-A’s tournament uni has this gem lined up for the reason they did it: “It’s not gray. It’s Ashe!”… At least that would be better than “because we can”.

“… … Here are the winning entries from the Toronto Star’s Maple Leafs third jersey design contest (from Roch Smith). … ”

I’m interested to hear from our Canadian hockey brethren on the contest winner. Curious if that borrowing/copying of the famous original Canada Cup uni design is seen as inappropriate or just reminiscent. Also curious if they like it or not.

There’s a guy in New York I know who thinks it’s awful, but what does he know?

To clarify (probably an unneeded clarification) it’s just Nazim Kadri’s (Leaf Prospect) choice. I’m thinking overall it would not be well received if it was chosen. Toronto, sometimes dubs itself as Canada’s team, much to the distain of everyone outside Southern Ontario. If in the unlikely circumstance they pick this design, it would play to that idea.

However the suits at NHL/NBC might like it. Sticking a Canadian team in the winter classic does represent a rating risk, one way to somewhat mitigate is to play up the Canada vs. US thing – which would be ludicrous, as the Maple Leafs (as anyone whose heard Don Cherry rant of a few weeks ago) is one of the more American NHL teams. But if there’s a hidden strength in the US interest of hockey, if you can make every market feel like the home market – you can do quite well (i.e. 2010 Olympics) – it’s why the NBC Network should pick up the World Jr tournament (but I digress)

Jeremy Lin meet Jim Craig, Jim Craig meet Jeremy Lin, you guys need to talk.

As a Canadian, and Leafs fan in Toronto, two things stick out:
    1. It would be wrong and arrogant to choose a Team Canada design for a Leafs sweater. Of course the Leafs org, and most of Toronto, are a little arrogant thinking Toronto is Canada, not just a small part of it.
    2. Kadri was referring to the design like it was worn in the ’72 Summit Series – “against the Soviets”. Even though he is young, he should know the difference between ’72 and the Canada Cup designs.

It just seems lame. Doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the Maple Leafs, although there was usually a Leaf or two on Canada Cup teams. Frankly, I’d like to see a Winter Classic sweater that reaches back to the ’30s, when the Leafs’ unis had a bit of panache. The candy-cane-striped sleeves, for instance. I also kind of like link, which Hap Day is wearing, because it includes that feature on the shoulder yoke. And a 35-point leaf with lots of chain-stitched veins!

That George Plimpton sweater in the ticker really is interesting. First name above the number, last name below it, and what looks like a really weird Texas Rangers-style font with little “warts” on the sides of the letters.

And the “GEORGE” is radially arched while the “PLIMPTON” looks straight.

Don’t ask me where I saw this, it was every bit of thirty years ago; but the “George Plimpton” lettering was in Fancy Block.

It was sort of like the Red Sox font. It was an exhibition game so none of the Bruins had NOBs. The number font on his was rounded, too, not like the Bruins regular number font.

The interesting thing for me about the ’24 Senators duds is not the lack of pinstripes, but that Clark Griffith spent money on a gratuitous perk for his players. Might be the first documented instance of that.

I assume that the unis were unpinned because plain white flannel made for a cheaper uni order than pinstriped flannel. Still, since the modern Nats have turned their backs on Washington’s pinstriped history with their own unis, and since they do honor the ’24 championship, the plain white Senators uni would be a nice throwback someday.

More un-pinstriped ’24 Nats at Shorpy:

    At the Series link

link supposedly from August, well before the Series. Maybe they got those unis sooner than later?

Could be road grays in link

“I’m convinced that I need to add this to Dressed to the Nines as an alternate home jersey,” says Hall of Fame curator Tom Shieber.”

I’d say that it’s more likely that the team (’24 Senators) received new uniforms just for the World Series…and they happened to be lacking pinstripes. The team-issued uniforms from the beginning of the year would have been in pretty bad shape by the end of the season, so they’d want to look sharper for the Series photographers.

Why didn’t Iowa wear its gold uniforms last night? That’s a home or road uniform.

Good question – I’m gonna guess that 1) the one time they wore their non-throwback golds they played crappy and lost; and 2) they were happy to have a legit excuse to wear black at home. Also gonna guess it will be done at least once next season.

Wow! What beautiful unis (& more specifically, stirrups) for the New York Cubans!

I live about 20 minutes from Johnson City and read an article about the misspelling on the championship rings. I can only imagine the look on the players face that spotted it. Their home park was famous for the large hill inside the fence in right field. Unfortunately they have since removed it. Good picture of it here:
    link

You know, George Plimpton’s jersey is so eye-catching in that photo I sent yesterday (and now it’s in the Ticker), that I have only NOW realized that the Flyers are wearing Barry Ashbee tribute patches!

I just like seeing the Flyers with their nameplates the way they SHOULD be on the current unis… not the white-letters-on-black-nameplate they currently use on their road whites.

Then again, I’m not even all that keen on the white nameplates on the orange jerseys.

Photo #8, the 2 year old girl with the stuffed toy, priceless. Just so many things to like about that one on so many levels.

Paul, who loves many things Wisconsin, will be delighted to hear that Anna and Kristy Berington are from Wisconsin. More specifically, Port Wing, which is in the part of the state Paul visited last year.

What a cool find in that old book and those old library cards. The only cool things I have found were in a closet in my house. I had removed one wall in order to expand it when low and behold I found two items somehow hidden in the wall. One was a really nice Women’s Bowling League Championship patch from the 1960-61 season. The patch has the letters WIBC on it, I have no clue what the letters mean. The other item was an old soup bone. The patch now happily resides on my denim jacket the soup bone is in parts unknown.

Some internet sleuthing on Jay Buhner on the soda machine: Finding Jay on that machine is not unusual, Jay was still in his playing days when that Mountain Dew logo he’s paired with was in use.
    Logo: link

What is somewhat novel, however, is the fact that that plastic front hasn’t been swapped out for a newer one since then.

looks like Bishop Fred Sansone aspires to be a Cardinal. probably waiting on the call.

He’s an Old Catholic not a real Catholic, so no dice there I’m afraid for the good bishop.

Saw a Coke machine with some NASCAR driver on it, and the bottles emerged from the general area of his crotch. Might as well go all the way and have it pop out at a suggestive angle, and maybe have his face change to a dopey grin as you grasp the bottle.

Does Dayton have to be the site of both or any of the first four games? How was Dayton chosen e.g. was it the geographic center of the 300+ Division I basketball schools? Why not give other mid-size cities a crack at First Four games? Had Colorado Springs, Sacramento, or Little Rock been chosen, would bubble teams from western conferences (talkin to you Pac-12!) had a better chance of getting in?

Dayton has been the traditional site of the play-in game(s) for years. Dayton’s location has absolutely nothing to do with who gets off the bubble and into the tournament.

The NCAA has two private planes waiting for the evening’s winners, so they can get to their second-round sites right after the game. Hotels are pre-booked.

Why couldn’t the Flyers just play their game at the Nutter Center at nearby Wright State?
    link.,cf.osb&biw=1440&bih=742&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=dayton+arena+nutter+center&fb=1&gl=us&hq=arena+nutter+center&hnear=0x884080d5aedd1403:0xa640e392f20e4ce4,Dayton,+OH&cid=0,0,7025657191323420562&ei=QVthT62ZLtP6ggfJofHSAg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&ved=0CDIQ_BI

That was supposed to show the directions from the Dayton Arena to the Nutter Center. They’re only about 12 miles from each other.

    Chateau Frontenac?
    In Quebec?
First WHA All-Star was in Quebec.
    Everyone stayed at the Frontenac.

Oooo, I could tell you STORIES….

The Fighting Saints, were not exactly Saintly? The Chicago Cougars met Quebec Cougars?

I stayed at Chateau Frontenac last fall when I was on vacation in Canada. It was late fall so a lot of the outdoorsy stuff was closed for the season.

I loved the underground tunnels connecting the buidlings.

I’ve had a few drinks at the Chateau Frontenac over the years, but the price of a nights stay is a bit too much for me.

For what you save going down the street to the Clarendon or any of a number of auberges, you can buy yourself a pretty good breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They couldn’t just throw back to a 60’s Leafs uni design? Noooo, we have to let the fans design something, and let a player pick the winning entry. Yeah, that’ll work…

    -Jet

cause if any team needs a “throwback to the 60’s” jersey…

it’s just a fun contest held by the paper… lighten up a bit

The twins are wearing different headbands, so I guess, technically, they are not dressed the same.

Anybody else notice that Grambling and Southern didn’t just wear Negro League jerseys, they each wore jerseys from multiple teams? They kept home whites vs road grays though.

Looks like Grambling had roadies for at least 2 teams; Cleveland and the Jacksonville Red Caps.

Southern wore white from the NY Cubans, KC Monarchs, Homestead Grays, and Chicago American Giants.

Captions say it was a doubleheader which might explain Grambling, but appears that Southern sported at least 4 jerseys for two games.

I agree that this is just people being overly sensitive and using Nike to attract some attention to their organization. However, Yuengling doesn’t only bottle the drink around St. Pats day in honor of the Irish. Nike specifically released the sneakers to coincide with the holiday.

    Yes, that world-renowned link

The state of journalism is in the terlet.

    Paul:

Liked the court story. Had a similar event in when I showed up in traffic court wearing a Mets jacket. The judge pointed out he was a Met fan and refered to me as Mr Met. Didn’t get out of the ticket, but he took pity on me and reduced the already agreed upon lesser charge plea/fine. I did notice he berated a kid wearing Yankees t-shirt to which he commented on.

Back in the very early 1990s, there was this one high school debate judge, a college kid, who when asked what his “judging paradigm” was (judges can have different systems for determining a debate winner), said he used the “purple pen paradigm”. Whichever team used purple pens to take notes, won. Within two weeks of him making this joke – or was he joking? – every policy debate team in Minnesota was using purple felt-tip pens to take notes.

Sean Smith of the Dolphins has posted what looks like a snapshot of the sleeve of a Nike-produced orange alt jersey.
    link

The swoosh needs to be bigger. Maybe have it light up and flash with tiny LED lights?

Yeesh. I don’t mind makers’ marks nearly as much as a lot of people on this site, but even I find it disgusting that that swoosh is just as big as the Dolphins’ logo. Here’s hoping the swoosh isn’t quite as noticeable on my Steelers’ sleeves.

I have to admit though, I would be intrigued by a Steelers jersey that used a stencil font for the numbers, kind of like what Nike gave to Pitt for their Pro Combat unis.

    link

Traditionalists (and a host of fellow Stiller fans) would have my head roll for saying that, but I believe it would actually add to the uniform. It would be like the font on the Navy Pro Combat unis being the same as that found on the side of a ship – it fits with the team.

    Ok, commence bashing.

No bashing at all, except that I want link, and therefore would rather the Steelers not claim the style. ;)

Interesting with that photo – from what we can tell, it looks like they’ve kept the same link.

True, but look at how thick the middle Aqua stripe is on the old orange jersey. Now look at link. Even though the Aqua stripe is cut off in that pic, it makes you wonder how big the cuffs will be on the Nike unis. Could be a good thing for stripes, or a bad thing for… who knows?

Consider yourself bashed, Jon. Not only do the Steelers not need any gimmicks, but the last two number fonts have been readable from the upper deck, and I don’t want to see them screw that up.

Last year Josh McCown was #15 for the Bears. Yesterday the Bears announced that Brandon Marshall would be taking #15 since McCown was no longer under contract.

Today McCown re-signed with the Bears and will be #12 this season.

Ooh, good thing they resigned him after Marshall was already added to the roster otherwise he’d have been on the hook for all those warehouses full of #15 jerseys.

    what?

Gotta make sure you stay off NYC sidewalks with your bike as well, otheriwse you risk a summons.

And as a bike rider, I say stay off the sidewalks because it’s freaking dangerous to ride on them.

Blasting through a red in the park when there’s nobody around is one thing, riding on anything short of totally-empty sidewalks is another.

Looking at photos from today’s Jays-Yankees Spring Training game and noticed that the numbers on the back of Joe Girardi’s and Freddy Garcia’s jerseys are grey with white trim, while Robinson Cano’s is just white.

Has this been talked about before? Any idea what the deal is?

    COTD… wow.

I think the best-looking one, though, is the one with the ED-209.

Those red alts the Trail Blazers are wearing are a thing of beauty. Portland has some of the best uniforms in all of sports.

    JAY BUHNER ….

Frank Costanza: Why in Hell did you trade Jay Buhner !!! He could hit, he could field, he could hit for power …. You don’t know what the Hell you are doing over there …. !!!!

Been a Maple Leaf fan since 1982. I know for a fact they will not be wearing those jerseys for the winter classic chosen by Kadri (in Jan.2013). These jerseys inhttp://auction.nhl.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=178402609&prmenbr=12717464&aunbr=178749319 would look great in the month of January outdoors in Michigan. The Red Wings in their reds.

pic didn’t work..the Darryl Sittler blue away jerseys, those were away (back in the 80’s)

nice, link but too much white against the ice surface and surrounding snow, would look washed out-same sweater but in blue.

Wait, so is Asheville going to wear gray against Cuse’s white today? Or are they saving that for when they play fellow #16 Vermont in the Final Four, the first time they can possibly be the “home” team?

usually when someone tries to “design” everyone and everything i think *meh* at best, and i mean at best, but “someone” did a fantastic job for a change.

colo-mesa: is it me, ot does that bull look like a doctor just asked it to cough, and it only cares a lil bit?

bah. love the florista jersey man, nice score, totally jealous. i would kill to be a medium you jive turkey…until i go to my next rock and slash or roll show and i am 20th “row” looking over everyone in front of me, that’s when my size shines.

    hugs and kisses,
    vintage is not my friend
