Or as Robert Marshall Calls It, the Holiest of Holies

openingday2011.png

Whatever else you can say about MLB’s rejiggered schedule and the way it has affected Opening Day (weird to be starting on a Thursday, sucks that the Reds don’t have the first game, blah-blah-blah), at least the first pitch of the season will be thrown on a weekday afternoon, not on a Sunday night. Personally, I count that as progress.

How will you be spending the day? Me, I’ll be wearing my new City Bakery Red Devils jersey and some matching stirrups and settling down on the couch at 1pm to watch as much baseball as possible. Got some beer, got some hot dogs, got the two best cats in the world — I’m set. And since the Mets don’t play until tomorrow, my Opening Day will be unsullied by the presence of Wayne Hagin. (Wayner, if you’re reading this, it’s not too late to demand a raise and then go on strike for the entire season if they don’t give you one. Consider it!)

Plus it’s supposed to rain all day here, which has two benefits: (1) I won’t be able to go for my usual afternoon bike ride, so I can watch baseball without interruptions, and (2) the Yankees will either be rained out or have to play in shitty conditions, either of which I’ll find amusing. (Ideally: They play four innings in a steady drizzle and then the big storm comes. Awwwwww, what a shame.)

By now most of you have presumably read my MLB season-preview round-up on ESPN. We also have a few late-breaking items not covered in the column, led by the news that the Dodgers finally made it official yesterday and announced that they’d wear a simple Duke Snider memorial patch. About time.

Meanwhile, here’s a really interesting development out of Baltimore: All umpires working Orioles games at Camden Yards this season will wear “EWT” wristbands. Those are the initials of Ernie Tyler, who was the team’s umpires’ clubhouse attendant for 50 years, including a streak of 3,819 consecutive games from 1960 to 2007. He passed away a few months ago. No photo yet of the wristband design, but there’s a good article here.

I’m fairly certain this is the first time anything like this has ever been done. And while it’s a very nice gesture, am I the only one who thinks it’s a little unseemly for umps to be wearing something Orioles-related? Obviously, a wristband isn’t equivalent to bias, but it seems to me that the umps should represent the game, period — they shouldn’t be wearing anything even vaguely associated a particular team, and that includes the team’s employees. But that’s just me; you may feel differently.

One thing we should all be able to agree on: Final roster cuts often entail some uni number adjustments. So far I’m only aware of changes being made by two Mets players, but I’m sure there are other examples floating around out there.

Finally, I love this: The Chattanooga Lookouts — that’s the Dodgers’ double-A affiliate — have bought a new domain name, called AreTheLookoutsHome.com. Unfortunately, as you can see, it redirects to a lengthy gobbledygook URL, but there’s still something endearingly simple about the concept. Every team should do this, no?

Update, 1pm: One additional update — the Pirates just announced their Chuck Tanner memorial patch.

Okay, that’s enough for today. Play ball!

(Special thanks to Thom Carter, Ken Levin, Dan Cichalski for their contributions to today’s entry.)

Last call: Today’s the last day to sign up for the Uni Watch Membership Program at the $15 price. Tomorrow the fee will rise to $20.

Today is also the last day to submit your design for the Baseball Project logo contest. Send your best efforts here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Formula 1 helmets now have improved, safer visors (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ “She does it every year, but Notre Dame women’s hoops coach Muffet McGraw brought out the green uniforms for Monday’s win against Tennessee,” says Jack Quinn. “I think this was the first time they wore this particular green design.” ”¦ Here’s first (but probably not last): Twins infielder Danny Valencia with an iPad tucked down his pants (as noted by Joseph Laferla). ”¦ Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has written a piece about why politicians should turn down opportunities to throw out the first pitch. Scroll down to the second boldface subhead (or just search on the word “doofus”) to see his uni-related thoughts (fun contribution by Bernie Langer). ”¦ Someone has managed to combine just about every uni and cultural trope into the worst T-shirt ever (blame Ben Traxel). ”¦ There are high-tops, and then there are high-tops. Not sure who that Georgetown player was, but it almost looks like he was wearing boxing or wrestling footwear (nice find by Clark Rucker). ”¦ Fun story about the Reds’ equipment staff. ”¦ Lots of different uni combos commingling in this Michigan spring practice photo (with thanks to Gordon Taylor). ”¦ Buried within this Twitter transcript with Rockies owner Dick Monfort is the news that the team may be restoring the purple jerseys in 2012 (with thanks to Steve Foster). ”¦ I didn’t realize that former NFL placekicker Matt Bahr had also played soccer with the Colorado Caribou — who, of course, had the worst uniforms ever. But Tony Bruno is aware of Bahr’s Caribou connection, which is a good thing, because Bahr coaches his daughter’s soccer team. “I recently had a conversation with him regarding the Caribous’ uniforms,” says Tony. “He said that they had to wear ten gallon hats on road trips and their warm-ups were leather. I cannot remember who he said designed the uniforms and warm-ups [looks like it was Medalist/Sand-Knit ”” PL], but he did say that the entire team was embarrassed about wearing them.” ”¦ The great Dave Eskenazi has come up with more photos of the 1956 Portland Beavers’ striped undersleeves, so I’ve added to them to the end of this set. Meanwhile, Bob Halfacre — who was supposed to arrange for us to manufacture a reproduction of this shirt — has pretty much dropped the ball. Sorry. ”¦ Here’s yet another jersey inspired by the Chisox beach blanket design. “It’s from my intramural college softball team back in 1984,” says Mike Ochoa. “One of the guys on the team was the campus Budweiser rep (drinking age was 19 back then), so we plastered the Budweiser name on the front and got free jerseys. It’s not like we weren’t true representatives of the product, after all. I did a piss-poor job of ironing on my initials (MEO) on the sleeve, but I thought it was cool at the time. The initials on the back stood for Spank the Monkey. Not proud of that, but that’s probably why we went with initials.” ”¦ Eric Davis noticed something interesting at Braves camp: The team logo behind home plate isn’t just painted onto the grass — it’s shaved into the grass, like the different levels of grass at the edge of a fairway or putting green or something. ”¦ Very interesting story about the various shades of crimson used at Washington State (with thanks to Skyler Archibald). ”¦ “Don’t know if you saw Frontline’s ‘Money and March Madness’ special,” says Matt Busch. “One of the infographics they put up was a cool bracket broken down by uniform outfitter. The show also had lots of talk about companies like Nike paying coaches, etc. Here’s the full program.” ”¦ “With baseball season upon us, I got the itch to search the garage for whatever I could find,” says Taylor McGillis. “I found my Dad’s old 1977-1979 Seattle Mariners uniform. He was a batboy/clubhouse manager for a few of his teen years. Absolutely shocked, I had to put it on.” Very cool, but did two-in-ones exist yet in the late 1970s? Maybe those were an aftermarket addition to the ensemble. ”¦

    The Georgetown player is definitely Ralph Dalton, who battled horrible knee injuries throughout his college career. Perhaps the ultra-hightops were in response to that…

    Yep, Ralph Dalton. I remember the blue/gray “Terminator” shoes (I believe that was the name) and he had ones that went mid-calf. I don’t know how hi-hi-hi tops helps bad knees, but hey.

    Terminators…Michael Biehn wore them in the original Terminator film.

    BTW…thanks to all for the Birthday wishes…what’s a better gift than Opening day?

    Maybe they were the cause of his knee problems? I remember reading about why Kareem Abdul Jabbar wore low-top sneakers. He said if you bind the ankle, the stress goes to the next available joint, which is the knee.

    I think the wrong player in that picture had the extra-high high tops on. Maybe they would have helped Sam Bowie avoid those broken legs he suffered.

    Snow on the ground in NE Ohio, so I’m not feelin’ the Opening Day vibe. Should be the first Monday in April.

    Don’t forget, free MLB games on DirecTV until April 10th.

    Yeah, bring back doubleheaders so the baseball media will be able to complain even more about the games being too long.

    As long as the Sawx and Yanks don’t play doubleheaders, since their games last forever…

    Opening “Day” should be just that…A day game.

    Opening Day should be on Monday…Period.

    Cincinnati should get, at least, the first pitch…Period.

    The President should throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

    Friday twilight doubleheaders or Saturday afternoon double headers…Bring ’em back.

    Abolish Day/Night doubleheaders.

    It is actually the Chattanooga Lookouts….instead of Chatanooga…..but who’s knit picking?

    It’s a great (opening) day!!

    Good call……guess the 5-hour energy didn’t take hold this morning.

    Go Braves……and take the Hawks and Thrashers with you!!

    Yeah it’ a typo, but given the nature of the blog, doesn’t that seem more appropriate anyway?

    Cool to see a shout-out to my (current) hometown Lookouts on here. I urge ANYBODY that is a baseball fan to attend a Minor League game, if you have never done so. They’re cheap, they’re fun, and usually have a great sort of “old school” atmosphere that the big parks can’t always match. I can’t wait until next Thursday when the Lookouts ARE at home.

    Agreed. If I were still in Indy, I’d still be making a weekly trip to Victory Field. As it is, I’ll most likely be watching a college summer league. At least it’s wooden bats!

    Here here to the minors! My son was born June 2 last year and has already been to 6 ballparks, 5 of them minor leagues. GO BRAVES!!

    Too bad the Lookouts no longer play at Engel Stadium. The new park’s atmosphere just isn’t the same.

    I’ve only lived here in Chattanooga since 2008 so I missed out on the Engel Stadium years. Of the three Minor League stadiums I have been to, I happen to like AT&T Field the best. I do hope the City can save Engel, but lately it seems like the chances of it soon being demolished are increasing. I can see where Engel would have once had its appeal.

    I got to play at Engel and it was one of the most fun parks to play in. The dugouts were way too short and small though.

    Meanwhile, Bob Halfacre – who was supposed to arrange for us to manufacture a reproduction of this shirt – has pretty much dropped the ball. Sorry.

    That is just too bad.

    ATTENTION, DIYers!

    Need a patch? I’ve found this seller to be a pretty good source for all manner of items…

    —Ricko

    LOVE that patch Ricko. Nice find. And you make the perfect point, if they were going to name their team after one of Poe’s most widely known works they should have at least made it a little more ominous.

    Paul, I’ve got to disagree with you on the memorial tribute to Ernie Tyler. From the article EWT was more than just the man who took care of the umpires’ clubhouse. He was a friend and confidant to the Men In Blue. His function transcended his loyalty to his hometown O’s. I’ve known a few MLB umpires over the years and their life during the season is just one eternal road trip. The fact that an individual in a particular city helps them make their time away from home more enjoyable is something that should be honored. The umpires aren’t paying tribute to the Orioles. They’re paying tribute to their friend Ernie who’s now working in that great umpires’ clubhouse in the sky. It’s a class gesture. Accept it on its own merits.

    I know some people will disagree with me on this one.

    The umps can go to the guy’s funeral, they can establish a memorial fund in his name, they can do all sorts of things. But I think wearing something ON THE FIELD is inappropriate. The umps represent the game, period. They should never wear anything that has even a tangential connection to a particular team.

    I see where you’re coming from, Paul, and I have to admit it makes me a little uneasy. I think it would be a little better if they were wearing it in every ballpark, not just Baltimore. It would seem more evenhanded somehow.

    I agree with Terry as well. If you’ve been around baseball in Baltimore for any length of time you’d understand how great a person Ernie was. Do you think a wrist band will make the biased towards the O’s? I don’t.

    For Jackie Robinson day the umpires wear number 42. Does that make them biased towards the Dodgers?

    Sorry, that came across a bit confrontational. It should read “Everyone who’s been around baseball in Baltimore knows how great a person Ernie was”.

    I’m basically with Paul on this, with a little bit of wiggle room. As a one-time thing, I’d be OK with the umps doing this. Pick a day, and every ump, in every ballpark, at every game, wears the tribute. Fine. But doing it all season long, and doing it only in Baltimore, that takes it across the line of propriety to me.

    On the other hand, since they’re umps and not selling ump merch with the special patch sewn on, they get a heck of a lot more benefit of the doubt for good intentions than teams and their “patriotic” camo jerseys or stars-and-stripes caps and so forth.

    Have a folder with all of those elements just waiting to be combined for another one-of-a-kind like link and link.

    Next up is a white pinstriped “away” jersey, without the drop shadows.

    …and yes, I realized both the softball and sleeveless designs are reviled around here – but I was going for unique.

    (Since that photo, the sleeveless has been sewed down and #7 added to the front and back. Both are NNOB, of course)

    Speaking of Mets uni number changes (I hope Beato gets his 27 until Boof comes back, or at least changes to something more normal-looking if they insist on holding 27 in reserve), I was watching some video clips from yesterdays Mets-Marlins game, and noticed that the Mets were wearing their ice-white uniforms and that while the regulars had NOBs, some of the non-roster guys (numbers in the 80s) had number-only jerseys, and it *didn’t* look like there was space for a name; rather, the number had been sewn on with the assumption that no name would ever go there.

    Do the Mets normally issue NOB jerseys to regulars and NNOB jerseys to invitees whose numbers are expected to change if they make the team?

    (And, that being said, those NNOB jerseys sure looked great. Turn those leading 8s into something around 4 or less, and you’ve got a nice look.)

    The Ed Rendell article was great. Anyone know where I can get a pair(s) of those Golden State Warriors argyle socks that were on the ticker last week? Happy Opening Day, kids.

    am I the only one who thinks it’s a little unseemly for umps to be wearing something Orioles-related?

    ~~~
    i donno…was it unseemly when the mets wore a memorial for an umpire?
    McSherry died at Shea — that’s why they wore that.
    Anyway: The Mets can salute anyone they want. But the umps operate on a different standard. Umps don’t eat or drink where the players do, they don’t stay at the same hotels as the players do, etc. When you’re an ump, things are different. Not wearing a gesture that can be tied to a particular team is just one example of this.
    i was at that opening day (shea) and i had heard a buzz throughout the stands (this is basically pre-interwebs and certainly pre-cell phone messaging) that mcsherry had died
    and he definitely died at riverfront
    was a shitty, rainy day, and a pall fell over the stadium
    think the mets beat the cards that day, but i don’t even remember
    wasn’t a great day, for sure
    Yes, McSherry died at Riverfront. I was covering the game that day, as it happened (not to name drop).
    Two worst parts of that: Marge Schott complaining that this had to happen to her and ruin her Opening Day and someone I passed in the parking lot afterwards kvetching that they had to pay to park and the game was called off so early. Yeah, sorry about your day, how did you ever get through all that?
    How is establishing you’re speaking from first-hand experience name dropping?
    Being a credible source is a bad thing?
    One thing we have in common, KT, whether you’re part of the media or the ogranization (I’ve been both at different times) you sure get to see the people at their smallest sometimes, don’t you.
    —Ricko
    —Ricko
    lol, not THE people, as if I meant the unwashed masses or something.
    Just people. Owners, players, fans, announcers…you get my drift (I hope).
    —Ricko
    My bad — of course it was Riverfront. (I was in New Zealand at the time, so that’s my weak excuse for getting that wrong.)
    But it doesn’t change the basic parameters of what I’m saying, which is that a team can honor anyone it wants, but the umps should not be honoring anyone connected to a particular team.
    Yawn. My problem remains – as it has long been – that you have taken minor celebrity status and used it as a bludgeon, not a scalpel.
    And signing your posts is even more pretentious. But enough of that.
    I apologize to one of such lofty status, you being a former or current member of the all-knowing media and all. My involvement and resulting familiarity with five new startup pro sports leagues/organizations is paltry indeed by comparison.
    (backs away bowing).
    But you’re right about signing. That’s habit from the old format here. Picked it up from long time ago from Jet when I first disovered UW. Seemed like a good idea, especially at the end of long comment to help avoid confusion over who wrote what. Isn’t really necessary now.
    —Ricko
    Relevant point…
    Is it bad that the Cardinals aren’t wearing something for Marty Marion?
    Or is it good that they accept death as part of life, and move on?
    link
    Obviously umps aren’t judges, but to me it feels the same as if a baseball arbitrator showed up in the team’s cap or the player’s jersey. It demonstrates a possible bias, no matter how minor or unintentional.
    My rambling thoughts for this morning …
    – From watching SportsCenter, why would any college put a logo on their campus building which 99% of the population would assume contains a marijuana plant?
    – Something about the composition of that Valencia/iPad image (link) is VERY cool. Except for the obvious standout item, the image just SCREAMS 1940s baseball card to me.
    – The bunting on today’s entry – LOVE IT. I don’t recall that from years past.
    – The Opening Day logo at the lead – even with the star, it makes me think we’ve advanced 1,100 years overnight.
    well there are some colleges that make their logo look like “space weed” link
    but its better than the fat guy with the surfboard logo link
    I don’t know if I would have ever noticed “the fat guy with the surfboard” without your mentioning it, but now I don’t think I can NOT see it!
    it’s like when jimbo-slice (JTH), pointed out the “upside down robot reading a book” in the bulls logo. now i can’t NOT see it! lol
    Weed and surfing are just about the last things I think of when I think of Case. On the other hand I can’t unsee the fat surfer now, but that sunburst doesn’t look like a pot leaf at all.
    the weed one is more of a stretch i give you that but we had to mock our own school somehow. especially since the whole re-branding thing was one big f’up
    – The bunting on today’s entry — LOVE IT. I don’t recall that from years past.
    ========
    Haven’t done it in the past. Glad I thought of it this year, and even gladder that you like.
    Agreed, but Paul needs himself some UW red, green, and gold bunting for special occasions. I have a crappy Illustrator bunting template somewhere; I’ll try to dig it up and produce.
    Re: the Valencia/Ipad image — I thought the same thing. Either it’s the lighting, or they’ve done some photoshopping to sweeten the picture, but that does indeed look like an old baseball card!
    -Jet
    Oh, btw, supposedly the Minnesota Lingerie Football League has received 14,000 submissions for a team nickname.
    Wow, with that many I bet it will be a really good one, huh.
    Reminds me of when the original Cleveland World Team Tennis franchise claimed 25,000 such entries and ended up with “Nets.”
    ~~~

    and you know this how? ;)

    cue the queen

    Even though the Astros do not play till tomorrow, I am celebrating Opening Day 2011 by wearing these beauties Robert Marshall offered last year: link

    I wore my “I’m still calling it the Jake” shirt yesterday. Tomorrow I’m wearing my Indians blue jersey. I’m thinking I need to get one in cream at some point now though.

    I’ve got my red 1975 Indians jersey & Beer Night stirrups ready to go for the game tomorrow!

    F1 visor design: ‘It’s a neat arrangement, occupying as it does the area currently covered by advertising strips, so there’s no commercial downside to improved driver protection.’ Hmm, I wonder if the new safety device would have been approved if it did infringe upon the almighty advertising logos that plaster every square inch of space on a race car and driver? Sponsors first, safety second?

    As I’ve said before, racing teams always get a pass from me when it comes to sponsor logos. They cannot exist without that revenue, rather than it simply being supplemental and they’ve been doing it long enough to know how to properly integrate a logo into a design, rather than simply designing around the logo.

    Exactly. Take NASCAR. There’s no Tony Stewart Stadium where one racer comes to race him on Sunday… where 60,000 Stewart fans pile in buying beer and hot dogs to root for their hometown racer. There’s no Tony Stewart TV deal where hundreds of thousands of Stewart fans tune in to their hometown announcing crew to cheer him on.

    The prize money- even the winner’s- (which is derived from TV and ticket/merch sales) doesn’t even come a tiny bit close to paying for that week’s race.

    So its a necessity, unless you think NASCAR could get by charging $100/race pay-per-view.

    I wonder what inspired Dennys Reyes to give up 44 in favor of 59? That feels like a step backward.

    what are the red, white, and blue bannner things decorating today’s post called?

    When did politicians (especially presidents) switch from “throwing out the first pitch” from the stands to throwing from the mound? As far as I can recall, all of the old “first pitch” photos show the prez in a box seat. I think there’s even one such photo of Nixon at a Sens game. Am I imagining this, or did a switch occur at some point? Who made the switch first?

    I was just combing my files for this very question. (See below.) As far as I can find, Reagan was the first to leave the stands and throw from the mound (Baltimore, 1986), and also the first to don team paraphernalia while doing so (Chicago Cubs, 1988).

    I found some further images behind the paywall in the AP archives that clarify this. Reagan first did first-pitch duty in Baltimore in 1984, and there he threw from infield foul territory near the third-base dugout to an Orioles player a short way down the foul line. Full suit and tie, no team gear. He did the same in Baltimore in 1986, similar spot and in full suit and tie, no team gear. In 1988, Reagan did first-pitch duty in Wrigley, and there he threw from the mound wearing a very nice satin Cubs jacket over shirt and tie.

    I assume that moving the president from the stands to the field was part of the Secret Service’s security reforms following the 1981 assassination attempt. Since then, the president spends very little time in exposed spaces; when the president attends a public event as a spectator, he’s almost always sequestered now in a box of some sort. But the 1988 decision to go out and throw from the mound is almost certainly pure Reagan theatricality.

    link.

    link.

    Also, the picture on the link appears to show William Howard Taft also throwing from on the field. However, I haven’t been able to find caption info, so this may not show Taft during his presidency, or even at a ballpark.

    And here’s a link that collects some presidential first-pitch highlights, including video of Reagan’s apparent first first-pitch from the field in 1984. Not a bad throw for a guy his age. Bush the Elder seems to have continued Reagan’s from-the-mound practice, though he went back to not wearing team gear. Clinton in full puffy Orioles garb is a sight to see, though his throw was also credible for a middle-aged non-athlete. Dubya continued Clinton’s dress-up style, but seemed to pull it off better, and also put in some legitimately good pitches. Obama was the first to wear jeans; he’s otherwise unremarkably continued the wearing-team-gear-on-the-mound practice of his two immediate predecessors (plus Reagan in ’88).

    Also, I found a citation for that Taft photo; it’s from the cover of Harper’s in 1909 and is not a first-pitch ceremony.

    link appears to be the first president to have worn a ballglove while throwing the first pitch; link, link, link the Elder, and link also wore gloves. link, link, link, link, and link did not. Obama has gone both link and link in two appearances. (Counting the All-Star Game for Obama in addition to Opening Day.)

    All of Rendell’s points are true, especially regarding what to wear, but it’s still kind of a civic duty and if you don’t want to look like a doofus and get booed a couple of times a year, don’t go into politics.

    There is a solution to most of his look-like-a-doofus concerns, though: Politicians should restore the ancient presidential first-pitch tradition that the dignitary throws the first pitch from a box in the stands. Wearing a suit. To a player standing a few feet away. Nobody is forcing pols to march out to the mound and try to throw a strike at 60’6″.

    As far as I can find, Ronald Reagan was the first president to (A) Throw out a first pitch from the mound; and (B) Wear team paraphernalia while doing so. Any politician seeking to follow Reagan’s radical break with a century of tradition should first ask themselves, “Am I a Hollywood-trained movie star?” Leave that kind of performance to the pros.

    Exactly. Ask themselves, “Do I have any experience such as channeling Grover Cleveland Alexander?”
    link

    —Ricko

    He seems to chide President Obama for always wearing Sox gear no matter what when also suggesting that a politician who wears the home team’s stuff looks like he’s pandering. Aesthetics aside, under Rendell’s at least Obama looks sincere when he does that.

    My Rendellian beef with Obama would be that he wore a Nationals jacket to throw out a first pitch, then whipped out a Sox cap. If you want to represent, great; walk out in your suit, hand your coat to the bat boy/girl, and put on your cherished Sox cap. Or if you want to play along with your host, then wear the Nats jacket. But don’t do both.

    Not to mention that the phrase “throwing out the first ball” doesn’t make much sense if the person throws it to the catcher from the pitcher’s mound. Literally, it seems to imply throwing the ball from some spot off the field out into the field of play.

    “I didn’t realize that former NFL placekicker Matt Bahr had also played soccer with the Colorado Caribou…”

    Matt descends from soccer royalty — his father Walter Bahr is one of the greatest players in US history. He was on the 1950 World Cup team that beat England (he assisted on the winning goal) and had a long, successful coaching at Temple and Penn State, among others.

    Chris Bahr played in the NASL as well, with the Philadelphia Atoms, where he was Rookie of the Year.

    i didn’t realize it until i started reading today, but i just added it up, and if i am not mistaken, this year marks my silver anniversary(1987-2011) of not working/going to class on the holiest of holies…(in my best amen voice)plllaaay baaaall. but this year will be a bit different then usual, i am saving the cheap beer and mustard laden tube steaks part for tomorrow.

    walk kate(blasphemer!) up the hill to work, check.
    emails answered, check
    telling tck they messed something up for the fouth day in a row, check( sorry Goluch, your stuff was sent here instead of directly to you)
    reading my morning uniform heavy sports section over black coffee and cigarettes, check

    now all i have to do is shower, find my copenhagen, put on my opening day jackalopes jersey, and pick out stirrups. i am thinking the 67 sens, but i may rummage first. no, i will go 57 reds, it has to be the official opening day stirrup(so let it be written). i have already retrofitted the jersey with a black armband for chancer, and i didn’t realize until now about the anniversary, so i will have to tape a diamond shaped piece of tin foil or rub silver leaf on it(it will have to do). by the way, the black armband is the only way to mark a loss, this patch stuff has gotten out of control. UNLESS the team does not sell them, something wrong about profit for death, but i digress.

    i have vacillated on this because i wasn’t going to watch anything until the reds like a right proper baseballist, but i can not resist the devil’s apple, so an hour of nyy-tigers, then 100% reds, and when it’s over, and not a second before, the new hometown royals, and the left coaster. i am sooo close on so many bobbles that i am going to paint during all the games but the reds, so that i can just go nuts tomorrow. today sort of feels like the sunday night games did in the recent past(which i have never watched), so i am justifying painting except when bishop red leg is preaching. is that okay? can i paint today, or will i upset the cornmother with my semi blaspheme? should i expect lightning bolts? i hope she doesn’t mind the hot dogs tomorrow, because i can eat 6 with grilled onions(i can give the perfect recipe for anyone who wants it) & stadium mustard easy on an opening day, and if i have to do that two days in a row my heart might seriously explode.

    oh i almost forgot, i do have a opening day “parade” planned. and yes, that means i will be putting stirrups on the cat’s heads and watching them stumble around the living room for 30 seconds until they rip them off, then punch each other in the immediate aftermath disorientation. simple things give me pleasure.

    i hate to get all hippie, and i know it is not possible, but i hope everyone’s team can win today or tomorrow, it sucks to get punched in the sack on eastnukahdader. enjoy spring’s sprung.

    the reds don’t seem the appropriate opening day stirrup? speak up comrade, you are in the stirrupbüro, you have a better one?

    mother of corn it feels good to have on the jackalope.

    In honor of the former tradition of the Reds opening the new season a day before the rest of the league, wearing the hose of the Redlegs is very appropriate for today!

    As for me, I am honoring the holiday wearing the beautiful Astros stirrups you provided last year:

    link

    i saw that after the fact, phil too. really there is never a wrong choice, just an official party line. but don’t worry, there will not be a lajoie square over dissent. if i can figure out how to download this camera i’ll post the redlegs.

    Mariano Rivera not going high-cuffed today, if this tweet is of any indication:

    “Ledger_Yankees Mo just pulled the bottom of his pants down to his shoes. It would appear high socks are a spring thing. “

    great minds.

    shit i need to get some dogs and cheap beer before the reds start. what was i thinking?

    ha! that’s great, i love stirrup friday. like i said, just because resolution R57 was official party line doesn’t mean the revolution is going to roll tanks into lajoie square and squash dissenting stirrup opinion. we are much more liberal in thought then that, from each to each, and so fourth. now sevenists…

    While I agree the Colarado Caribou is the worst looking uniform, I nonetheless wouldn’t mind seeing a game between the Caribou and the Vancouver Canucks – wearing their infamous “V” unis – to see the two worst unis together – I wonder how many fans would survive the evening without vomiting, I guess they’ve have to play that hybrid sport “Indoor Soccer” to make it work.

    According to the “apparel company bracket” only one game didn’t feature a Nike school (Michigan – Tennessee). The East Region only featured one non-Nike school (LIU). That brand sure does dominate, BUT aren’t UNC, Marquette, Georgetown Jordan brand. I know they are connected, but isn’t is disingenuous to show a swoosh for those schools?

    Don’t know if it’s been mentioned or not, but while I was sorting magazines to send back and which to keep at work, I came across Slam Magazine’s 500 Greatest Players in Basketball history. There are some older pics in there. Maybe even something unusual.. I haven’t really looked through it..

    Did they dress someone up like Penn State to practice tackling? I mean, I know RichRod set that program back a few years but sis they forget what their opponents look like?

    2011 jerseys for FC Tampa Bay (Don’t Call Them Rowdies), which introduces a blue away shirt:

    link

    I’ve always said the new team has to embrace the history but not be strangled by it, so, whatever. Had the original team existed continuously since 1975, there probably would have been something like this at some point anyway.

    But a home shirt that’s not white – that’s even more of a departure. The original Rowdies never (to my knowledge) never wore green at home (partially because of Florida’s heat) and often wore white on the road as well.

    Why is Blue for Blue’s Sake the new Black for Black’s Sake?
    Preds
    Blue Jackets (ok, fine)
    Pens
    Panther
    ATL Hawks
    FC Tampa Bay
    Dodgers throwbacks
    etc.

    i realize there is no *concrete* definition of ___F___S

    but im pretty sure a throwback (or fauxback) doesn’t fall into it

    It’s not blue for blue’s sake if your team

    (A) Already wears blue as a primary team color (Dodgers, Predators, Bluejackets, Panthers, Hawks);

    (B) Has the word “blue” in the team name (Bluejackets); or

    (C) Plays soccer, where non-team-color change kit is an ancient and venerable tradition (FC Tampa Bay).

    That cuts the list above to just the Pens, and one instance does not a pattern make. The NHL kind of has a blue-alt thing going on right now, sure, but the characteristic feature of that is not the color blue by itself in a BFBS way; it’s an overall design approach of blue jersey, round “old-timey” jersey crest, and lace collar.

    It’s not like the Dodgers have never worn link.

    If a throwback of fauxback doesn’t count, then you have to take out the Pens, both of their blue jerseys fall into those categories.

    The Bluejackets I’ll give you, but the ATL hawks recently added blue to their color pallet after DECADES of zero blue in the scheme. I’d call that BlFBlS.

    Could be mistaken, but I thought the first Pens blue throwback is historically accurate. That uniform debuted in the second year of the franchise before bowing out to the large penguin on the chest we know today.

    It’s not exactly like the Hawks conjured up the blue out of nowhere. Various shades of blue were found in their uniform during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

    the Atlanta Hawks only had blue from 68-72. From 72-07 the color scheme of white, yellow and red (and a smidge of BFBS) went unchanged. I just think those years are what define the Hawks.

    If the Denver Broncos swapped orange for yellow when they went to their current unis, you would probably say, What the hell is that? rather than say, it’s a part of their original color scheme because the Broncos ARE blue and orange.

    once again, IMO…

    And Gusto I think you’re right. It’s their new blue alt that I think is a fauxback.

    I’m looking at the Hawks franchise as a whole not just the Atlanta years. In St. Louis they had blue in their uniforms.

    Via the great Charles Pierce, this shot of a tee shirt that fans of the orange & blue will covet even more than those protein flavored ones that Our Host has been strongarmed, I mean dissuaded from offering. Behold-

    Reagan might have been the first President to throw out a first pitch from the mound, but it wasn’t unheard of.

    Here’s a picture of Mayor John Bohn “pitching out the first ball” link at Milwaukee’s Borchert Field in 1946.

    The season before, in 1950, Brewers fans had the treat of a link, as Bohn’s his successor Frank Zeidler tossed it to a ceremonial catcher, boxer Jack Dempsey (no idea what he was doing in Milwaukee). Dempsey wore a catcher’s mask with his suit, and Hizzoner wore a Brewers cap. Dempsey appears to have caught from the field, but we don’t know Zeidler was standing when he threw the ball.

    The following season, Mayor Zeidler link as he opened the 1951 season.

    Sorry, “The season before” was obviously supposed to be “A couple seasons later.”

    That’s what I get for moving around my paras on a board without an “edit” button.

    Here’s link, but that was in 1961, when he was vice president, and he’s in Nashville opening the game for the Vols. But note the ballcap, a relatively early example of a national pol donning team gear.

    I’m not sure if this has been posted before today, but I just saw it on a message board I go to frequently.

    Possible new BFBS helmet for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette: link | link

    Ohio State football will wear “special” camo helmets during their spring game in a couple weeks…link

    Ugh. I’m so sick of that crap. I’m not gonna start the conversation again, but this is just ridiculous and it needs to stop.

    For the record, I’m talking about the camo/military “honor” stuff, NOT your post, haha.

    Just a reminder to anyone who may have missed this, yesterday I posted a link. No major changes there, just some updates and KNICKS THROWBACKS – which were added by popular demand.

    Is Opening Day the only day game during the season in which the Reds will wear home whites? It seems the team’s protocol is to wear the red tops during every other day game.

    Jumped down here when I saw the bunting. Love love love love LOVE! Thank you Paul! And now to read the rest of the post.

    Padres broke out their grays today. I’m undecided. They’re nice enough but look just like everybody else. The old sand was ugly but it was unique to them. Also never been a fan of teams not having a number on the front unless it’s like the Tigers/Yankees home look. Not a fan of that hat with the all white lettering either. Only 1 team in California should be wearing a blue hat with white letters. I like the other one better.
    But enough complaining. It’s the 1st day of baseball & I still have a little over 24 hours before my Pirates get their 1st of many L’s on the season. For now life is good!!!

    I know Paul thinks this link is an upgrade, but I think it is terrible. That has to be THE most boring uniform ever. And we’ve gone into it before but that wordmark is the worst. It was bad back in the 50’s or whenever it was copied from and it’s worse now.

    I still think the D on the hat should be connected to only the bottom rung of the S like it was originally. Still can’t get used to it hitching on to the middle one too.

    That sand color was unique. Enough to make it good. It wasn’t garish, fit the beach setting, it was something I would have hung on to as a staple. I’m sad it’s gone. Snif, Snif.

    The Padres have not only been assimilated into the collective, they still have that awful SanDiegO thing going on. I could live with the grays if they went with the old padres font, or if they brought orange back into the color scheme. But no.

    I should have hit reset before typing, because I pretty much said what you said, Ben…

    ahhhhhh…..

    finally sitting down (again) but this time in my digs with baseball…real honest to god baseball…finally taking place

    and it’s the pods & cards

    i don’t mind the gray, but i’ll echo everyone else’s sentiments in that now they look like everyone else’s roadies — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing when you consider from whence they came

    brian ~

    i don’t mind the blue cap with white lettering, although i’d prefer a brown cap with gold lettering; but saying the dodgers “own” blue and white (especially when the pads blue is more navy than royal) is a bit much; the pads DO need new unis and a reversion to their former brown/gold scheme…

    benjamin ~

    being unique doesn’t mean it’s any good … while i appreciate the pads for trying, that sand/piss/tan just never looked good with their current colors…put them in something else (like brown/gold) and that tan would probably rock…it’s just not a complementary color

    movi ~

    the SanDiegO is the best thing about that font/look … the current home “Padres” script is what has to go — that’s just awful; some teams look good with a script wordmark — the fathers aint one of them

    “the current home “Padres” script is what has to go – that’s just awful”

    Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The SanDiegO is like a pile of deer pellets and the Padres script is like a cow pie. They’re both crap.

    Either go back to brown and gold or blow it all up and start over. But the current unis have to go.

    I don’t mind the Padres script (the underline is what sucks), it’s not wonderful, but it is far from the horrendous SanDiegO. Seriously, look at that thing link . The huge S slants like this >, the huge O slants like this <, but the root of the whole problem, the huge D sits there like a big =. It kind of looks like they were trying to create depth with the San iegO and the big dumb D sits out in front.

    If there was a continuous concave line marking the top from the S to the O (convex on the bottom) with a normal sized D it would help. But then that would probably negate the capitalization of Diego. In other words it all sucks. My god, get rid of it.

    When it comes to Padre grays, I really think this one link is under rated. Would look awesome with a heather gray, kind of a 60's throwback. The orange has to pop though.

    As for the brown/gold, yeah I kinda like it too. But there is baggage with those colors. You have to admit that. I'd like them to switch back, but understand and accept them staying with navy and gold or orange. But Navy and gray, blah blah blah…zzzzzzzz.

    i just checked back through the henderson guide, and for their entire history, save for one five year stretch, the pads have always had either “PADRES” (sometimes it was all lowercase) or “SAN DIEGO” (sometimes upper/lower, sometimes all lower)…i think PADRES actually worked best…however

    the interlocking SD, worn from 85-90, was probably the best solution for a road script/logo

    unfortunately, they put it on road pins, which is an absolute no-no, and unlike many of you, i never liked when they added orange to the brown/gold…

    orange goes with brown, orange goes with gold…but it doesn’t work with both, to my eye anyway…and i like orange (although not like mo-vi)

    perhaps their next iteration of roads could use the interlocking SD, and we might all be happier

    I totally agree. The grays look terrible. Their roads looked awesome last season. I really miss them already.

    Just reported from Busch Stadium:

    A guy wearing something very similar to this:

    link

    Sorry, no actual photos of the (assumed) bloody, beer covered fan.

    Yes, the guy was wearing the the Cubs’ blue pull-over jersey from the 80’s. Definitely had Pujols and #5 on the back.

    Stood outside the main ticket office for the first couple of innings, and then went into the game around the 5th.

    I just found link in the Uni Watch Flickr gallery. Doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever eaten… looks like it came from a very large circle, seems to be missing a bunch of cheese & missing Italian sausage or a topping, seasonings shook on as opposed to infused into the cheese, and a hunch that sauce probably has a hint of sweetness to it.

    Happy Opening Day! …to some of us, and jack squat to the rest of us.

    ah mark….

    good things come to those who wait

    we all know the real opening day is tomorrow

    Yes, patience is a virtue, Phil.

    Still feels like celebrating Christmas on December 26 or a birthday a day later. Just isn’t the same.

    Wrong logic, Mark. Celebrating today is like opening presents on Christmas Eve. Tomorrow is baseball’s Christmas.

    Is there anywhere you can get a list of Pantone colors with the actual names not just the numbers for free? I tried googling it but came up dry.

    oh sweet baby…

    forgot but just turned on extra innings, on the hunch it’d be a free preview…and yep…it is…

    getting the angels/royals on extra innings 5, and cards/pads on 6…prolly cause that all that’s left on

    youse guys should see if you get the EI free preview

    I get it. And I love it. Strangely enough, we get the “low tier” D-TV package so we don’t get FSMW and therefore don’t get to watch local Cardinals broadcast, but that doesn’t stop me from watching it on 1/6th screen thanks to EI!

    sweet…anyone just catch fernando tossing the first pitch to jerry reuss?

    On this great baseball day, I want to throw in a little college hockey / minor league hockey wrinkle. It’s that time of year again where college hockey players are getting signed left and right by minor league teams. This always brings about one of my favorite sights, the mixed goalie pad (as shown below by former WMU goalie Jerry Kuhn). Nothing quite like seeing a gold Bronco helmet and pads with a bright blue ECHL jersey.

    link

    Yeah I saw Reuss. No stirrups, sorry PL.

    SFG wearing WS patches on the sleeve. Didn’t know they were doin’ that!

    nope.

    it says ‘best starting pitching staff, best closer, best catcher’ in the major leagues.

    best starting staff?

    i think the phillies might have something to say about that when all is said and done

    Great video with Rick Stowe. I remember him betting me that Pete Schuerek and John Smiley would win a combined 40 games. Uh-huh. The signed bat I won is sitting 2 feet away. Once he called me and said ‘get down here to the clubhouse, Deion just got traded, come get his Nike stuff.’ Zoomed down there, Jose Rijo beat me to it. But I did get a PERFECT FIT pair of red/silver/white Nike Air Zoom Turfs like these.
