The League That Shoulda Been a Contender

Screen shot 2010-03-30 at 5.05.07 PM.png

Last fall I wrote an entry about a site devoted to NASL jerseys. Now that site has added a ton of MISL photos (that’s Major Indoor Soccer League, for those of you who don’t recall that particular chapter in sports history), many of them amazing. Here’s a breakdown:

• The Baltimore Blast had an interesting logo, using the soccer ball’s checkerboard pattern as the basis for a series of crowns duh, blast patterns. Later on, their jerseys got silly, and then seriously silly, before retreating to something more sedate.

• Love the ticking stripe on the Buffalo Stallions’ sleeves. Here’s a shot where they’re playing the New York Arrows, which meant ticking stripe vs. ticking stripe! Or at least that was my first reaction. The sad truth, however, is that those ticking stripes were actually a form of logo creep that was worn by many MISL teams.

• Another team with that same creep-stripe: the Pittsburgh Spirit, who had a great chest logo.

• Pretty groovy logo patch for the Cleveland Force.

• Interesting houndstooth-ish sleeves for the Cleveland Crunch.

• The 1986-87 Chicago Sting had some funny ideas about striping. There’s something really hilarious about their chest logo, though — okay, he’s angry, but he’s also wearing a straw-boater hat. Wha–?

• Shouldn’t the Cincinnati Kids have had a baby goat on their jerseys? They didn’t go that route, but they did have some awesome sleeves.

• Vertical typography is one thing. But vertical sideways-reading typography is quite another.

• Check out this Hartford Helions jersey. See how it looks like a short-sleeve yellow polo worn over a long-sleeve red undershirt? Nope — it’s all one piece.

Whoa — the manufacturer’s logo should be “Sheez!” instead of “Shez,” no? Lots more photos here.

• The New Jersey Rockets had an interesting way of depicting the “R” in their logo. From the back, their jersey looked a lot like a hockey jersey. Bonus points for the interesting MacNOB.

• The Philadelphia Fever had a nicely executed chest logo. Here’s how it looked on the field.

• The San Diego Sockers had a great wordmark concept, but the execution doesn’t quite work. The ball needs something to indicate that it’s in motion, that it’s just been kicked, etc. (Update: David Bloomquist just sent me this — much better.)

And so on. You can access a lot more images by checking out the team pages linked from here.

It’s worth noting, incidentally, that Jim Vilk used this Tacoma Stars design as the basis for his Uni Watch membershp card. I have a feeling many of the MISL designs would translate very, very well to that realm.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The MLB Commissioner’s Office is marking Opening Day by having a TV party in one of its conference rooms on Monday afternoon. A little birdie forwarded me this invitation that was sent to staffers — note that the pitcher is wearing stirrups. Perhaps the designer was a Uni Watch reader, eh? ”¦ Longtime reader Mike Cesarano, who teaches at Queensboro Community College (and who create this Mets uniform history), has been working on setting up a throwback game for the school’s baseball team, and yesterday his project was featured in The Daily News. Bravo. ”¦ Frank Albanese made himself this DIY Mets jersey. “The letters are felt, but the jersey is polyester, not flannel,” he says. “My mother-in-law did the sewing, so it’s not all my work. Blank jersey was about $25, felt was about $12, and the patch was about $12. Not bad for a first attempt (I think).” ”¦ With Bobby Cox retiring after this season, he’s prominently featured in the Braves’ season ticket package (with thanks to Chris Edwards). ”¦ Life is full of vexing choices — here’s a modest example. That’s the Central Arkansas baseball team, and I can’t decide if they suck or if they rock (this cruel quandary presented by Chris Mycoskie). ”¦ Mike Brethauer sent along some old family photos. “That’s my older brother Eric in the Canada Dry uniform, which was the uniform my Dad wore to play basketball with his friends,” he writes. “And that’s me in the baseball uniform, taken in 1965. Check out the socks and shoes!” ”¦ Here’s some awesome video footage from one of the last Indians games at Cleveland Stadium. It was also Nolan Ryan’s last start in Cleveland (great find by Marc Swanson). ”¦ Also from Marc: Three things — two of them great — in this short video clip: (1) an old Uniroyal commercial featuring an appearance by helmeted spokescharacters Uni, Roy, and Al; (2) a worthless Continental Insurance ad; and (3) a teeny bit of NHL promo footage, concluding with a wicked shot to the jaw. ”¦ “My girlfriend has a sewing class here at BYU and she wanted to know what to make,” says Dan Taylor. “So I showed her an old Bullets jersey and she whipped me up a sweet original rendition of it.” ”¦ Striped tube sock-o-rama available from this site (with thanks to Joshua Exline). ”¦ Brewers license plates are now available in Wisconsin. ”¦ Kirk Carter, who attends UGA, wrote up a critique of the school’s baseball uniforms. ”¦ The Orix Buffaloes have added a red brim to their headwear (thanks, Jeremy). … Scott Friend found a photo of Bob Huggins on his high school hoops team. That’s him in the back row, No. 34. Looks like the team’s uni was heavily influenced by Marquette. … Cool item about what the Yankees’ championship trophy has been up to.

The straw hat on the bee in the Sting logo is obvious for its time, especially if you look at the wordmark – it’s a play on the movie “The Sting.” Insect nostalgia!

Great stuff! When I look at that Baltimore Blast logo, I don’t see a series of crowns. To me, it looks like they used the checkerboard pattern as a basis for a graphic “blast”. Anyone else?

You’re right, of course. I was so intrigued by the pattern that I missed the obvious connection to the team name.

I’m going to think he was attempting to be humorous with the “crowns” comment. No one could be that obtuse.

Loved seeing all these, btw. I *loved* the MISL growing up. New York Arrows, Shep Messing — good stuff!

Same here…loved playing on the field in between quarters, and playing at Shep Messing’s indoor facility!!

Color me silly, ’cause I loved this jersey:

Thought about adding that and the Lazers jersey link to my DIY list, but I think I want the ’83-’84 Spirit first:

Scott Friend found a photo of Bob Huggins on his link. That’s him in the back row, No. 34. Looks like the team’s uni was heavily influenced by Marquette.

I know Huggins played at Indian Valley High School, and that’s where his dad coached several years, so I’m trying to figure out why it looks pretty clear that the cheerleaders’ shirts say “TVS” in that photo…

I’m not calling it a fake, because I’m about 99% sure the coach on the left is Bob Huggins’ dad, Charlie.

That Sting jersey was cool, too. It made my list of MISL favorites:

My picture’s no longer available, so good to see that jersey in today’s article.

I don’t have the software to zoom like I’d like here, but I’m guessing that IVS. I think the white outline on the top part of the “I” give it a larger look and illusion of a possible “T”.

Now don’t be dissing the bee. Stanley Sting was a classic mascot:

Baltimore fans, can anyone solve this uni-mystery?

The ’83-’84 Blast team picture shows them wearing Nike-made jerseys: link

But how long did they actually wear those? I ask because by the end of that season, they were wearing these Umbro unis: link

maybe we’ll get lucky when there are more people with the throwback brewers plate maybe the team will realize it’s time to switch back

Wow. In the 70s here today and tomorrow. Earliest in the year it’s been in the 70s since they’ve been keeping weather records. Also the first March with no snow. Not one bit.

I imagine that pretty much guarantees the Twins home opener in 13 days will get rained out.

Yep. They were playing about five years ago in a newer version of the MISL. They had added orange to their color scheme. They also added a woman to the roster, signing Lindsay Kennedy to play for them:

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was thinking too…but if it’s an “I” you’d think the outline would be the same at the bottom as it is at the top, so as not to give the look of a T.

And upon further Googling, it appears at the time Bob Huggins was in high school the name was Indian Valley South, hence the IVS as opposed to IVHS (or apparently IVSHS?). Oh well, probably looking too far into it…slow day, what can T say?!?!? ;)

I used to hold season tickets for the Spirit. Great stuff those pictures brought back a great deal of memories. Paul Child was favorite player.

Never went to a Tacoma Stars game, but drove by the Tacoma Dome, home of the Stars, many times. Interesting that the dome uses a diamond motif also.

All this MISL talk and not one mention of Tatu? Shameful.

When you go clicking around those MISL pages, check out the early KC Comets team photos, and note the names of the President and General Manager. The biggest sports management mega-honchos all get their start somewhere…and the Leiwiecke brothers did it by bringing the mirror ball/techno music/smoke & lasers introduction into professional sports via an indoor soccer team in Kansas City.

(And no love for those early-80s Comets unis? Best in the league, IMO.)

    Yes.

The Sting started in the NASL in 1975. During the 1982-83 winter, the NASL didn’t have an indoor season, so a few NASL teams played in the MISL temporarily. When the NASL went under, some went to the MISL full-time. The Sting stuck around until 1988.

The Steamers have actually had nearly as many lives as a cat. The quick rundown:

The original Steamers played in the original MISL from 1979-1988. When they went under, the original MISL (by then the MSL) had a team in St. Louis called the Storm that did not survive the league’s folding.

In 2000 and 2001, the reborn Steamers (playing in St. Charles) played in the World Indoor Soccer League. They were, ostensibly, part of the merger with the “new” MISL (formerly the NPSL, nee the AISA), but took a year off before coming back in 2003-2004. They were done and dusted in the summer of 2004 before they were rescued by new owners who spent a boatload of money trying to market the team as link rather than a soccer family thing to do. They lasted two seasons and their final gasp was losing the 2006 championship game in overtime to Baltimore.

There was talk that Dave Checketts would revive them as a date-filler at whatever the arena is called now, but it hasn’t happened and it’s unlikely.

I actually have one of those orange Steamer jerseys from 2004-2005. I worked radio in the league that year and bought a jersey from each of the teams when we’d go to their arena.

That was the end of the Steamers.

Before the gaem Darth Vadar would be on the field during the player intros with a light saber as the place was dark.

Before the gaem Darth Vadar would be on the field during the player intros with a light saber as the place was dark.

We didn’t get into the game until about the 3rd inning due to a huge walkup crowd. 60,000 in attendance that day.

Municipal gets put down by people, but that stadium had its charms.
Not an Indians fan, but I liked Municipal Stadium. It never felt like a dump to me. I especially liked that you could (almost) always get a ticket even at the last minute.

Last time I saw Nolan Ryan pitch there (forget which year), I was sitting along the right field fence. In the fifth or sixth inning I put a dollar on the railing and told my brother and friend, “He’s pitching a no-hitter tonight.” They took the bet. After 8 and 2/3 innings, they took my dollar when the Tribe finally got a hit.

Saw the ’81 All Star Game there, which was very cool. First time I ever ate ballpark mustard on my hot dog.

Izzo and Marriucci’s high school team also had Marquette inspired unis- and some cool striped stirrups (apparently shoes were optional). link

The reason so many of the early MISL jerseys looked like short sleeve polo shirts with long sleeves sewed on is because essentially that’s what they were. I can’t recall where I read it but I remember reading that when the jerseys were manufactured someone forgot to tell the manufacturer that they were supposed to be long-sleeved, so they made them all short-sleeved, like most outdoor soccer jerseys. By the time someone realized the error it was too late (and too costly) to scrap them for new long-sleeved jerseys, so they simply stitched longer sleeves on to the existing shirts.

And because, unlike the rest of the world, our outdoor soccer leagues had traditionally played in the summer (to utilize players from overseas “on loan,”), the short-sleeve jersey was all you had on these shores until the MISL.

Also, many indoor soccer teams shared arenas with hockey teams, and the ice would be below the turf, making things a bit chilly. So long sleeves were big in the original MISL (and often since).

Now MLS teams have long-sleeve options that they use early and late in the season (which now stretches from March to November including playoffs). But back in the NASL days? I don’t recall any long sleeves. The Rowdies would have looked awesome with the green and gold hoops on long sleeves, but (being from Florida), they never had a long-sleeve option. Not even for indoor.

    Phil,

I’m not sure I’d call Central Arkansas’ black tops BFBS. While their primary color is purple it seems to me that their two secondary colors are silver (gray?) and black. Their logo has a ton of black as a secondary accent. While most teams appear to run Purple primary the tennis and volleyball teams are black dominate it seems. While the men’s soccer program runs gray/black.

BFBS to me is Duke or Apu’s favorite squadron, the NY Mets where black is essentially nothing in regards to the school. At least Central Arkansas has a lot of it in their logo.

Imagine what a little research on the interweb will do for you. I did find out they used that logo from 2003-2004 as an Alt. logo, so are they bringing it back? Or is that just what the Packers decided to throw up on the web site?

With the golf season in full swing (pun intended), my UW reading has been slacking, so I apologize in advance if this has been mentioned. But, is seeing the announcement of the Packers pre-season opponents, the Browns are using what seems to be a different logo:

Hey … I kinda like that new “NFL Preseason” logo. It’d be nice if they’d standardize ALL the NFL logos (you know, preseason, wildcard, draft, Halloween, etc.) so they all followed that format.

    Well, all-righty then.

are you sure the “ticking stripes” aren’t just the admiral logo repeated? they made jerseys like that, and i’d assume you hate that style more than the three stripes…

    Phil,

That website you linked, I’m not sure I’d trust their info (not saying it is or isn’t right in this case), they have my alma mater’s nickname listed as the “Northmen” which we haven’t been for over 20 years. They also have the enrollment absurdly wrong, we’ve never topped 2,200 students, let alone nearly 3,700.

just google central arkansas school colors

you’ll find they pretty much all say “purple & gray”

Wasn’t saying it was wrong in this case (it is right according to a page I found on UCA’s actual website). I knew I was likely fighting a losing battle and my words (had they been spoken) were jovial and joking. People still call my alma mater “The Institute” rather than Northwood University. Stupid text based sarcasm!

Also, I’m sure Paul will enjoy this. I’ve agree to be a part time assistant baseball coach at a local high school…whose school colors are my least favorite combo…Green and Yellow. I can’t believe I have to wear it! At least our hats are pretty sweet.

I played that game — or one VERY much like it — at a bar in Covington, Kentucky, in June of 1997. The then-galpal and I were in the midst of a 30-day x-country drive. We’d just eaten ribs at some joint outside of Cincy and had crossed over to Covington to wallow in the vice.

Played lots and lots of shuffle-bowl games over the years, but I think that’s the only bowling arcade game with a ball (instead of a puck) I’ve ever played.

yeah…well, the sarcasm tags are broken again, so no worries

but when i say something is BFBS, you can rest assured i have researched it first

the last thing i wasnt is for some smartass calling me on it when it’s actually a school color or something ;)

Ah, MISL. As young teens, we used to go to a bunch of Stallions games. I remember feeling so cool after doing a Stallions / Sabres “doubleheader” one Sunday.

My 8-year old son still wears one of my seriously shrunken Stallions t-shirts.

Or, maybe, people who aren’t fans of a team will realize that things like that are for people who are fans of a team, and that while people who aren’t fans of a team are certainly entitled to an opinion, people who are fans of a team are entitled to tell those people their opinions don’t matter.

No Marquette County? Well, somebody better notify link.

Just wondering if any Chicago-area readers have ever been to the original Lou Malnati’s (Lincolnwood)…

There’s some seriously good shit there. I didn’t really have a chance to look at much of it because I was with my kids and they’re maniacs, but I did get a good look at a pair of Nellie Fox’s stirrups and spikes. Also, they had an early 40s Cubs zippered vest jersey. The weird white-shouldered undershirt was missing, though.

Old-school pro basketball was represented by a Zephyrs scoreboard and a Packers jersey.

There was also some non-Chicago stuff. One thing I noticed was a 1972 yellow A’s jersey.

I definitely need to go back to get a closer look at the things they have there to see if they’re authentic or not.

the Cleveland Stadium video is awesome. I also loved the walk up the ramp scene, as my very first game was in 1968 and I will never forget my walk up the ramp and the SPLASH OF COLOR I saw, as we had a black and white tv at the time! Also, Stadium Mustard was the fare back then.

according to howard berger, via icethetics, the leafs “Added to the blue and white sweaters will be the much-missed horizontal waist stripes. There was no reason to get rid of them and every reason to bring them back. Berger also says the ‘TML’ shoulder logo, introduced in 2000, will also make a comeback.”

    Damnit! My apologies…time for bed.

About the Toronto Maple Leafs return to the TML shoulder logo, I once read a writer liking it to “something Charles Manson would carve into his forehead!” I like the Leaf shoulder logo better.

Not sure if this was mentioned but the Baltimore Blast STILL use the same logo! Slight variations but same basic concept

I didn’t check the rest of the messages, so my apologies if these were pointed out. As a kid I loved watching the MISL. I went to a couple Sting and Lazer games even. If you notice, the Wichita Wings logo looks too much like the Wonder Woman logo. Also in the later years of the Kansas City Comets, the “KC” looks like the RC Cola logo.
