The Last Train to Clarksville (Pt. IV)

Westfield, Ed-Logo

By Phil Hecken

And, finally, today we visit the last round of entries for the “Design-A-Uniform” contest for the Clarksville Wildcats. As with the previous three rounds, we have another outstanding set today. The last two entries, you will notice, are not in alphabetical order — one was received last weekend (as the first entries were being run) and the other was my fault, as I had received the entry but neglected to post it in proper order. So, those two will appear at the end of this entry. I believe I was able to upload every single entry sent my way, but if you sent me something that DID NOT appear, please contact me with your submission and I’ll make sure it gets to Coach Walls (and I’ll run it in a future column). So, lets take a look-see at the final entries:

Dylan Visvikis: submission

First and foremost, thank you for considering my submission.

I used the Rawlings Uniform Builder and took some screenshots.

This uni set is designed for a classic high school look with a modern twist–the “cougar head” logo, featured on the shoulder sleeves of the Home Whites, Road Grays, Blackouts, and the CHS Purples. It is featured on the chest of the Gold Alternates. The logo is outfitted with two of the five team colors, each depending on its surrounding jersey.

Home Whites: Self-explanatory.

Road Grays: Again, self-explanatory.

The “Blackout” Alternate Uniform: Can be paired with the pictured white pants or the Alternate Black Pants. This uni is for night games.

TWO ALTERNATE UNI OPTIONS:

Gold Alternates: The logo-centric option, can also be paired with alternate black pants.

CHS Purple Alts: The CHS option.

Adam Walter: submission

Phil,

Amateurish at best…but actually kinda happy how they turned out.

I attached both the new logo as well as the uniform line-up (both in .jpg form). Have a good one.

Adam Walter

~~~
Daniel Washburn: submission
I am far too lazy to come up with a complete uni set, but here is a black alt vest set that I put together quick with what was floating around in my head while reading about it. The idea is that the paw is scratching through the vest to show the undershirt. With the pants I wanted to continue that theme by purchasing black pants and then cutting the stripe with a knife. Don’t hem the edges, so they have a frayed look, and then sew a strip of yellow inside the pants. That is my outside of the box part.
20 years with the Cubs hat logo? Time to give the Good Guys their due.
~~~

Geoffrey Waterman: submission

Hey!

I might have a few more (like an away or something) on the way, but here’s what I have so far.

Two versions of home uniforms, and a logo in three colors that could go on a hat. Thanks! Take care!

Sincerely,

Geoffrey Waterman

Michael Watson: submission

For Clarksville High. First time trying this, only have sorry MS Paint to work with”¦ this was fun.

Ed Westfield: submission

Phil,

My submissions for Clarksville HS baseball

Thanks!

Mark Wilkes: submission

Here are my contributions to the contest.

Same interlocking logo design for CHS applied to two different uni sets with and withough gold outline. Did not use the Cubs “C” – why copy, be original! Same cap for both sets as I felt the two tone cap was needed to get some of the gold in and balance the purple.

CHSa – more traditional, minimalist approach to uni. Exception would be the use of yellow sanitary socks to add color/contrast and balance use of gold in cap (only works if the players show their stirrups of course)

CHSb – more contemporary without being over the top. Uses CHS logo with gold outline to help balance stronger use of purple on sleeves.

Thanks for the opportunity to contribute. I would welcome other opportunities like this (even if it means “devaluing” the design profession – which I am in).

Mark Wilkes

Wesley Willis: submission

Dear Phil,

Here are my three submissions for the uniform contest. Today, I am presenting a home uniform (mostly gold and purple), an away uniform (mostly white and gold), and an alternate (black and gold with purple pinstripes). I hope the UniWatch community likes what I have to show them, and I thank you and all involved for your consideration.

Warmly,
Wes

~~~
Vinny Bove: submission
Here’s my Clarksville uniform submission. Purple and yellow (that’s right, Packer and Steeler fans, it’s ‘yellow,’ not ‘gold’) are notoriously difficult colors to work with, and it was a challenge to come up with something that was both new and classic. In the end, I created a few different versions of the main logo (including a ‘CHS’ version), as well as two different versions of both the home and away unis.
The ‘C-cat’ logo is based off of the actual Chicago Cubs ‘C.’ I traced it, then added all the cat elements on top.”
~~~

Joe DeAngelis: submission

Hello Phil,

My designs have hints of classic uniforms (NYY & LAD) and a modern looking alternate vest jersey that I think would look great over a black T-shirt. The alternate cap is black based featuring a “wildcats” claw as a secondary logo.

Thank You
Joe DeAngelis

Well, that’s the final round of the Clarksville Design-A-Uniform contest. And a great bunch of submissions on which to end the weekend. As with the other three batches, please let the artists know what you think, and give them all a standing round of applause for their efforts!

As I had previously mentioned, now Coach Walls will review all the submissions, and I believe he’ll be narrowing down his (and his team’s) favorites in both the caps and the uniforms, which we’ll then put to a non-binding vote of the readership. Each and every one of them has been outstanding in its own right. If by some chance (and knowing me, it’s a decent chance) you sent me a submission and I didn’t include it, please send it to me again (a couple of the submissions actually got sent to my spam folder, and while I do check it to make sure there isn’t spam in there, it’s also possible one or two got through that i just missed). I’ll make sure Coach Walls sees them and I’ll include your design(s) in a future column. If you didn’t send me your design, the contest is officially closed, but I expect we’ll have another contest in the future.

Thanks again to everyone who participated! This turned out to be a LOT of work for me, but it was indeed a labor of love. The designs presented in the past two weeks lend me to believe that contests such as this do NOT devalue the work of true graphic designers, but they better stay on their toes, right? Great stuff all.

benchies header

Nice, fresh, new color Benchies today. And the author himself to set it up. Here’s the Rick:

“Always good the learn new things, right? Never too old to be a jock, right? Grab life like it’s a flask of Peppermint Schnapps and take a big ol’ hit on it…”

Thanks Ricko. Enjoy your Sunday Benchies.

UW stalwart Ryan Connelly, whom you may remember more for his DIY failures than his DIY successes, is busy with more projects. He recently made a cameo appearance at Sheep Station in Brooklyn, and shot me an E-mail updating me on his newest “project” — a “Uni Watch wall.” What’s that you say? I’ll let Ryan explain:

My dining room wall is being taken over by UniWatch…

I framed my Pittsburgh sports mash-up, my Swisshelm Express logo, and my Invaders disaster. (Closeups can be seen here and here.) The framing turned out better than i thought it would…

Great stuff. Now, if you read the second article (and I know you did), you’ll also remember that Ryan had painted his family’s shed to look like an old Mail Pouch barn. Well, RyCo just finished his latest mail pouch barn last month and sent along those pics for us to enjoy.

Thanks Buddy! Awesome job too. Keep up the DIY’ing.

nfl uni tweaks

More uniform designs from the readership today. Some shorter descriptions, but the product is just a great as ever. If you would like to submit a uniform redesign for your team(s), please shoot me an E-mail and put in the subject line “Uniform Tweaks for (your team[s]”). Thanks.

Our first redesign today comes from Michael Weinbaum, who has a design concept for the Jags:

I’m a Jags fan (yes we exist) and I know you said you don’t like their new uniforms. I agree that there are a few problems with them, but I think that the road look is much worse off than the home look. You can barely see the thin stripe on the black pants, and the teal borders on the names and numbers never shows up, not even with hi-def TV. With that said, the Jaguars will be wearing black numbers with a teal border on the road for the next 5 years. For the next 5 years, the road jersey will have a thin snakey-thing so the road pants might as well have it too. So what minor change can be made to make this uniform ‘pop’ in a good way, both on TV and in person? See attached picture.

I believe that black pants are always going to look terrible, and I note that the Saints no longer wear them and the Ravens are phasing them out. There is a chance that teal pants might be a better look for the Jags, but that’s a thought for another day. One thing is for certain, as bad as black pants look in football, they look much much worse when mated to black-top socks. Thus my change. The Jags could start wearing these in a matter of weeks if they wanted too, whereas new jerseys will take 4 more years and new pants at least a year. Hope you like it, hope it earns a mention in your blog, hope they start wearing these after you publish this photo.

~~~
Our next tweak comes from Ron Verrecchio, who has a simple solution for the Ravens:
Just a quick fix for the away uni. Changed the helmet stripes to match the new pants stripe.
~~~

Next up is Mike Hass, who has a couple different suggestions for the Steelers:

A couple of days ago I sent you my suggestion for a team (the Steelers) that needs a Uni Tweak. I listed my problems with their current uni, and explained how I would fix them. After thinking about it awhile, I really wanted to see what the new uni would look like, so I just designed it myself. Since I was only tweaking the current uni, I was done after an hour or two. I’ve attached what I came up with, and you can do with it what you will. I think it’s a subtle change, but looks way better.

Just to recap the changes I made. Before (current) and After (new uniforms):

• Block style numbers replace the italic san serif numbers.
• Black outline removed from NOB.
• Yellow stripes with thin black outlines changed to solid yellow, black, and white stripes.
• Stripe pattern added to socks as well.
• White inner stripe added to ultra thick black stripe on pants.
• Yellow added to collar.

And that’s about it. Enjoy!

~~~
Moving along, we have Emanuel Caros, who had some ideas for fixing the Browns:
Phil,
As a means of putting off studying for my law school finals, I figured that I would try and update the Cleveland Browns uniform like a few people did in your last post.
I found a mock-up of a Bowling Green uniform and used it as my basis, adding logos (which i’m sure everyone at uni-watch hates that there are 4 different logos on one uni, but I think since they’re small, they come out as cool little details as opposed to obnoxious), changing the colors, and elongating the shoulder stripes so that they wrap around the entire arm. The helmet logo is supposedly one that was made in 1965 but never used; it looks surprisingly modern to have been made so long ago. I also added matching stripes to the originally solid white socks.
I like a dark/light brown contrast so I wanted to mess around with that two-tone look that comes about when players sweat, a la North Carolina’s kit, but all my ideas seemed too cheesy (“BROWNS” appearing on the side panel). Also, in attempting to be as realistic as possible, I realize that it doesn’t say “Cleveland” anywhere, but I couldn’t find a place for it without compromising my values in regard to uniform designs (I hate tiny words under the neckline!) and so it probably looks a bit too “college football.”
Anyway, I hope you like the result. Have a good one.
~~~

Today’s penultimate concept comes from David Sonny, who has some thoughts on how to redesign the Bengals:

Okay, so I did this a while back to show certain people that a return to the past is not always a bad thing. This is just a mix of the 80’s and late 90’s uniforms with a little modern twist. I only did one color, obviously the white would just be an inverted version as would an alternate orange, so I left it as is. The mock ups only take around 30-45 minutes, but why spend the time when people can use their imaginations?

And that is how I see the Bengals uniforms if they decided to go back to revisit the past.

Enjoy.

~~~
And today’s last set of tweaks come from Mike Forman, who has a couple changes for the Bills and Eagles:
Tweaked the Bills logo by gimping that lame motion eyeball streaky thingy from the current one (here’s how it looks with a new uniform). Also removed a lot of unnecessary black from the Eagles duds. Thanks.
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: Another reader submission today, this one comes from Brian Bennett, and it may be a doozy. That’s probably because you won’t find a link to it. But it does have a date, location and final score. Put on your thinking caps today, boys and girls, because this one may take some thinkin’. You can probably find something on the web that will indicate you got the game. Confused? Guess The Game From The Scoreboard. And, as always, if you enjoy the game, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
5 & 1a
Our man in the street, Jim Vilk, brings you his “Top 5” Best and one WORST college football uni matchup from Saturday’s games:
A posthumous honorable mention to a matchup we won’t see anymore, Hofstra/Northeastern — Somewhere, Wayne Chrebet is shedding a tear and Dan Ross is looking down with a sense of melancholy.
5. New Hampshire/Villanova — ‘Nova looks good anytime, but throw in some snow and a decent opponent and you have a Top Fiver.
4. Oregon State/Oregon — Yeah, it’s from Thursday, but it was a really slow week.
3. Florida/Alabama— Would have been ranked higher with normal unis.
2. West Virginia/Rutgers — My color palette special of the day.
1. Texas/Nebraska — Pithy comments not needed — just look at them and enjoy.
And the WORST matchup: New Mexico State/Boise State — I’d love to see the Broncs bust the BCS…but not in these unis.
godboy
Where’s Your Messiah Now? Well, it was a tough day for the Gators, falling 16-33 13-32 to Bama, to lose the SEC championship. This of course, sent my BCS predictions into a tizzy…couple that with frantic finishes from Cincy and Texas, and the whole kit-and-kaboodle almost went up in flames. Texas still isn’t a lock, but if not the Horns versus the Tide, then who? Horney Toads? Boise? Bearcats?
Nope. Gotta go with Texas, who IMHO got royally screwed out of a shot at the BCS last year, to meet Alabama. The rest of the bowls, kind of a crap shoot…anyway…the BCS predictions (they’ll be announced today at 8:00 pm EST on FOX) … check back then to see if I nailed ’em. Here goes:
BCS Championship: Alabama vs. Texas
Fiesta Bowl: TCU vs. Iowa
Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon
Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Boise State
Orange Bowl: Cincinnati vs. Georgia Tech
Tough calls this year…and I’ll probably be wrong…but those are my calls and I’m sticking with ’em. Feel free to disagree or make your own predictions below.
heisman
And as for the Heisman, the three finalists will be announced Monday during the 6:00 showing of ESPN’s SportsCenter, so I’ll make my picks now as well. Did Timmy’s meltdown yesterday affect his chances? How about Coy’s last minute save and a beaut? What about that kid from Stanford? Or maybe that kid from ‘bama… I can’t see Tebow winning it again, but he’s still gonna be tough to leave out of the top 3. I thought at the beginning of the year Colt would win, and nothing he’s done this year has led me to change that. So, that’s two finalists. Who’s my third…hmmm.
Gonna go with these three: Tim Tebow, Florida; Colt McCoy, Texas; and … drumroll … Toby Gerhart, Stanford. Real tough to leave out Mark Ingram, especially after he showed Tim Tebow who’s his daddy in the SEC Championship. If anyone sneaks ahead of Tebow, Ingram’s it.
~~~~~~~~~~

OK, everyone, that’s it for today. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Clarksville Design-A-Uniform contest. Coach Walls will have some tough choices. I believe we’ll be doing a poll to have you, the readers, pick YOUR choice for the best uni and the best logo, next weekend, but that’s dependent upon Marc. No matter what, though, there will be a new uniform poll.

Special HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to out to the man who brings you those polls, James T. Huening, who turns a year older today. Have a good one, JTH. Cheers.

Everyone have a Super Sunday.

    That C-cat logo in Vinny’s concept rocks. Not sure if I like it as part of the wordmark on the jersey, but the C logo on it’s own is great.

    Was “Where’s Your Messiah now?” really necessary? Didn’t think so. Not the first time Uni Watch has disappointed me with such attempts at humor or attention-grabbing headlines…

    Question 1 – Are the Clarkesville Wildcats actually wildcats or are they just human beings dressed up as wildcats?

    Question 2 – If they are actually wildcats, are they felis silvestris silvestris, ornato, cafra, lybica, or bieti?

    Question 3 – Are the cats in question actually gold and purple? I can imagine the yellow but can’t help but thinking the purple is actually a shade of red or black.

    Thank you in advance for all of your hard work in answering these important questions. Stay blessed.

    Meh, I like the headline. Really tired of athletes wearing Chistiandom on their sleeves.

    Meanwhile, I’m totally boggled with that GTG. To my knowledge that’s not a scoreboard from Shea, nor the Polo Grounds. This is going to puzzle me for hours dammit.

    Two Things:
    1. The redone Bills logo reminds me of our good old friend the Buffaslug
    2. Shouldn’t C.J. Spiller get some love (and some hardware)?

    I think they’re closer to felis cartoonus topcaticus, and the purple is more of an accessory.

    “gimping that lame motion eyeball streaky thingy”

    No way, the motion line, and the Bills logo is fantastic.

    If I were the Bills owner I’d have that on the white helmets worn with the throwback duds. Worst to first in uni rankings immediately.

    In which Paul’s head explodes…

    The D-III football playoff will have link teams wearing purple, although it’s too bad St. Thomas didn’t upset Linfield – link for those boys.

    Mike Forman: Wow, I guess I never realized just how much black must be on the Eagles uniforms! A nice little detail alteration that really made a surprisingly big difference! Nice touch.

    Sorry didn’t get to post yesterday, but glory be, that Riders fan on yesterday’s UW was piping HOT!!!!

    And her uniform was nice also.

    Agreed. If they’re gonna make such big theatrics about it, a little ribbing is fair game.

    Beauty stuff by RyCo. I’m gonna have to talk him into either traveling to Richmond or letting me steal his idea when our new outbuilding goes up next spring.

    Shouldn’t you be at church?

    “Hey, Notre Dame, where’s your Holy Mother now?”

    Is that an okay line?

    By all accounts, Tebow is a pretty amazing young man. Do some athletes lead with their faith a bit too much? Of course they do. But with people such as he and Kurt Warner you get the feeling they really do base their life around their beliefs.

    As opposed the obligatory “First of all, I give thanks to Jesus” Sunday school response so many others seem to parrot out, because they think it’s what they’re supposed to say, when a sideline reporter shoves a microphone in their face.

    I sincerely doubt Tebow thought his God had forsaken him yesterday. More like, “I’m not used to losing. It hurts.” And that, folks, is an sensation that has nothing to do with anyone’s religious beliefs.

    JimV:
    I’m only getting a top 4 on my screen and no “worst”: perhaps user error. Anyway, I wanted to mention Clemson/GaTech, not as no. 1, but as pleasing nonetheless. I know it involves a mono-orange, but the two unis complemented each other, IMO. Also, any game played in the snow yesterday was good, despite Cincinnati and So. Ill. As for worst, has to be Boise St. The photos look OK, but the mono blue against blue smerfturf is hard on the rods and cones. Unfortunately the Yellow S-storm is done for the year, or I’m sure they wuld have contended for this honor.

    Whenever I see an athlete doing something like wearing a Bible verse on his eye black I ask myself what would people do if another young man decided to wear his beliefs on his sleeve. I’m thinking something like “Hoes” under one eye and “Booze” under the other. Or mabye “L. Ron” and “Hubbard.” My guess is a lot of people would go ape shit. The Ohio State QB got a lot of flack, probably rightfully so, for dedicating one of his eye blacks to Michael Vick earlier in the season and was given the cease and desist treatment by Tressel. When you’ve got such double standards in place people need to ask themselves if an action is simply harmless goodness or whether it is reinforcing some status quo that can, maybe even unintentionally, do harm (physical, psychological, or emotional) to others. Tim seems to be a decent young man but he’s also clearly a proselytizer in a country that supports his beliefs but is not nearly so accommodating of the beliefs of others.

    Amen.

    No argument here on that principle. But it’s sort of a different one. To me, religion should be kept out of the “workplace” and that’s what these teams are for these kids, and these pro athletes.

    The fault lies not with the players who expresses themselves if such expressions are permitted. The fault lies with the coach who doesn’t say, gently and in private, “Not here. Politics and religion are not to be involved here. The focus is football and you getting your education.”

    But, as long as eyeblack evidently is considered a protected form of speech (which it most certainly is not, I would think), can’t fault the player.

    Know what, just maybe all this farting around with “football costumes” isn’t helping, either. Kids don’t get that the uniform is something to wear proudly, with standards to be upheld. Not something that gets “boring” and “I should get to wear something different once in a while. Maybe black?”

    Nike obviously doesn’t get that, either. Or they do, and have decided to cast it aside for their own motives.

    Heaven forbid we should have any standards to uphold. What kind of society would we be if one of our primary concerns wasn’t to alleviate potential boredom for 20-year-old being given a free education.

    Chaos, it would be, just chaos.

    On a side (and somewhat related) note. The operation in Afghanistan is called “Operation: Cobra’s Revenge”?

    Huh? Military operations with Video Game names? Oh, puh-leeze.

    —Ricko

    The slight adjustment to the Ravens helmet and black pants is just what the Dr ordered. Makes the uni a bit more traditional without forcing fans to have to buy a new jersey. As long as the white pants have the same stripe adjustment, I am in. Great job. BTW the Eagles look 100% better without the black.

    Great Bengals concept by David Sonny!

    Hoping that UF’s performance yesterday will lead to the retirement of their oh-so-cheesy white helmet.

    as a ND fan, yep its an ok line ;)

    as for tebow, regardless of beliefs, it was kind of funny to watch him holding back tears. for someone that has sculpted an image, whether by choice or by the media, that they are infallible and with a nickname like superman they deserve to be laughed at or ribbed every once in awhile. for those that can’t stand him (count me in that group) we’ve been waiting a long time for this day. its the same thing for people that don’t like tiger woods or mj when they were finally pulled off of their pedestal. just because hes still in college doesn’t mean he gets a free pass.

    I’m not a particularly religious person, but I’ve always thought there was some pretty good advice in Matthew 6:1-6. The part that starts “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them”.

    Pretty simple: If an atheist athlete (and there are certainly plenty of them) wore eye black with “There Is” and “No God,” everyone would have a conniption. And with good reason — that is basically a “Look at me!” statement, putting your own agenda ahead of the team and the game. And let’s not even get started with what would happen if a pagan or Wiccan player wore a statement of faith.

    None of this belongs on the field. Tebow’s eye black is no different.

    Anyone who made it to Ben Hill Griffin this season knows too that thousands of fans wear eye black with Bible verses under their eyes to the games. I don’t know if this is organized by a student group or not but one can easily see how this “in group” marker can turn into a boss holding an “optional” prayer at his office or sending out devotionals just as FYI. The pressure to join in would be immense. Such is the danger of showing “pride” in ones belief when one just so happens to be in a position of power. The line between freedom of speech and material/psychological compulsion to step in line can easily be blurred. Were he an atheist questioning the status quo I’d look upon the actions a little differently. That would be protesting the dominant discourse something like the black gloves at the Mexico Olympics. Recent polls suggest that more than half of Americans would not vote for an atheist president even if (s)he held all of their policy positions and was best qualified. Confronting that kind of bigotry through sport has a noble history. I don’t think Christians in this country face similar persecution.

    Poor analogy. A billboard on a bus is SUPPOSED to be used to advance specific agendas (whether to sell a product, promote a cause, or whatever). You can argue as to whether public transport should have billboards to begin with, but that’s a separate issue. Once you allow advertising in a given space, you open yourself up to all sorts of content.

    But no content at all belongs on eye black.

    Best Bengals re-design I have seen so far, so easy and classy.

    Has anyone ever sent any of the re-design ideas to the actual teams? If so, did any of them respond in anyway?

    Here’s a bit of fun Raven’s Blasphemy …. How about an alternate jersey in Old Gold to wear with the Black helmet and Black pants. The Heisman is disappointingly easy to predict, year after year: It will almost invariably be given to a quarterback or running back, and almost invariably to such a player from a Top 5 team.

    It’s rarely given to the best player in college football, in my opinion. Suh’s Heisman prospects remind me of my 20/20 hindsight re: Lawrence Taylor: I will remain unconvinced that he was not the best college player in 1980. I know George Rogers had a nice season, but LT who changed the pro game starting in 1981, his rookie year.

    The Heisman is almost a curse when it comes to the winner’s pro prospects: Gino Toretta and Danny Wuerffel come to mind.

    The one defensive guy in recent years they did give it to? Charles Woodson. Eleven years later, he’s having one of his best pro seasons.

    “The Heisman is almost a curse when it comes to the winner’s pro prospects: Gino Toretta and Danny Wuerffel come to mind.”

    Andre Ware.

    Wonder if any other ex-Cowboys RBs will be on the sidelines of their college teams, you know, to bring them luck?

    Also the Bengals really need to lose the white side panels. They’re in all-black today and the white part just sticks out horribly. If they’re going to insist on side panels, they should make the tiger stripes go all the way up.

    The Rams white over white is working for me, if not for the w-o-w haters. They got their dark blue sleeves, dark blue and gold helmets – plenty going on to prevent any sense of a “white out”.

    It is odd to see that some Colts are wearing the new material, Joseph Addai for example, whereas Peyton and others are still in the old material.

    The new material makes the shoulder stripes look far worse.

    They announced during the Bears/Rams game that Soldier Field had just been re-sodded this past week. OK, normal enough. But the end zone has a green that is about 5x lighter shade of green than the rest of the field. It looks very bad, and very sloppy. I understand the growing season in Chi Town is short, and that paint is frequently applied to open air stadiums in cold climates, but come on man! WHy would you JUST paint the end zones a light shade?

    Actually, I saw Phil’s explanation above, that it was a take-off on the Simpsons, and accept it as understandable (funny, even). Apologies, Phil.

    It’s one thing to ridducle an obvious hypocrite — the preacher who gets caught wit his pants down or hands in the till, so to speak — but it’s another to riddicule that person’s or any person’s faith.

    re: White over white.

    A team conceives its home uni. Sometimes that’s a dark helmet and matching jersey (Bears, Vikings, Chiefs, Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan State and many others, for example).

    Rules says they also must have to have a white jersey. If that’s all they choose to alter for the road version, that’s their call.

    And, for more years than many here have been alive, I think, that’s what the majority of teams decided to do…change only the jersey for road games. If anything, they’d add MORE white by going to white pants (see Redskins and Giants, for ex., in the ’50s). For years in the pros, only the Chicago Cardinals flipslopped jersey and pants colors for road games. Vikings and Chiefs, to name two, later adopted the plan, after Cards had dropped it.

    Alternate road pants are no more traditional than teeny tiny sleeves, nor should they be either forbidden or encouraged. They’re a recent development, a current style/trend, a progression. Not a bad thing, but certainly not something that every single team “ought” to do.

    When you’ve piled up probably thousands of games you’ve seen either on TV or in photos, a dark helmet with all white is an absolutely, positively normal, common and acceptable approach to a road uni.

\”Hey, Notre Dame, where\’s your Holy Mother now?\”

    Is that an okay line?

    (Just askin\’)

    By all accounts, Tebow is a pretty amazing young man. Do some athletes lead with their faith a bit too much? Of course they do. But with people such as he and Kurt Warner you get the feeling they really do base their life around their beliefs.

    As opposed the obligatory \”First of all, I give thanks to Jesus\” Sunday school response so many others seem to parrot out, because they think it\’s what they\’re supposed to say, when a sideline reporter shoves a microphone in their face.

    I sincerely doubt Tebow thought his God had forsaken him yesterday. More like, \”I\’m not used to losing. It hurts.\” And that, folks, is an sensation that has nothing to do with anyone\’s religious beliefs.

    —Ricko
as a ND fan, yep its an ok line ;)

    as for tebow, regardless of beliefs, it was kind of funny to watch him holding back tears. for someone that has sculpted an image, whether by choice or by the media, that they are infallible and with a nickname like superman they deserve to be laughed at or ribbed every once in awhile. for those that can\’t stand him (count me in that group) we\’ve been waiting a long time for this day. its the same thing for people that don\’t like tiger woods or mj when they were finally pulled off of their pedestal. just because hes still in college doesn\’t mean he gets a free pass.
Yeah but to be fair, Tebow has never really done anything to garner any sort of real, true despise from most people. I guess you can doubt the sincerity of his \”passion\” and enthusiasm that he projects, but besides that few people have a reason to hope for his downfall. I think that the people who seem to have this contempt for him, is really towards how the media has built him up as the ultimate \”college hero\” and (in Brennaman\’s case, messiah re-incarnated). At least that is where most of my hatred comes from.

    On uni-business, I\’d love to see oregon involve both the modern and retro uni-sets more next year. Not mix and match the two, but it could be nice to see the uniform on thursday with the white helmet, or an away version of the retro used, similar to this: link

    Seahawks are wearing their dark blue pants (that they wore with the neon green jerseys) with their blue home jerseys. I kind of like it. It breaks up the monochrome look that they usually have. I was wondering if they were ever going to use this combo.

    Tweak away at the Steelers’ unis. If they can’t beat those guys they deserve a uni redo. I’m going outside to kick the football until I forget I saw this. See you tonight.

    Late to the party. Went to church, then went to see “The Blind Side.”

    Couple observations:

    – People take themselves (and others) WAY too seriously. I didn’t like the Messiah line, but so what. Moved on. It took me a long time to come around to Tebow. He was built to dislike, but guess what? He’s the real deal. I doubt any of us wouldn’t want him on our respective teams. More than that, I wouldn’t mind him as a son or a son-in-law. Looks to be a really decent kid. That said, I’d encourage him to leave the eye black alone. As with Paul, it doesn’t belong.

    – About the movie: Say all you want about Nike (and it brings much on it itself) but aesthetically, it beats the heck out of UnderArmor. That bloody logo was plastered all over the movie. Looks like a bruise, compared to the swoosh. UA uniforms, unless they follow the traditional look seem universally ugly. Same with Adidas. Nike’s modern stuff does seem to have some style to it.

    Oh, and one more thing, the Clarksville stuff. My vote goes to Ed Westfield. Nice combination of modern and tradition. The yellow jerseys look nice. I’ve always wondered why more schools/teams with yellow don’t use that look. I might cringe if I see all yellow, but hey, the A’s got away with it for a while.

    Good work, Ed. Nice job coordinating the effort, Phil. Everybody else: Take a breath.

    Kudos to the Steelers mash up, but it’ll take a lot to bump the black. Ditto with the Steelers tweaks. They look good, but for the Steelers themselves, it’s as good as its going to get.

    Now that tweak for the Ravens? Terrific. Repaint the helmets next week. And those Cincy uniforms? They can’t start wearing those soon enough. Great job, guys.

    I totally agree that religious statements have to place on the field. That said, it doesn’t seem very classy to needlessly kick a guy when he’s down by going after his religion.

    If Tebow pulls a Tiger Woods and is caught sleeping around, go ahead and blast him for being a hypocrite. But then the only thing he does is lose a game, is it really neccesary to mock his religion (and yes, the Messiah line is mockery)?

    All I’m saying is that, if you disagree with Tebow’s eyeblack statements (as I do), you can express that disagreement in courteous way, or you can be an ass.

    In this case, you seemed like an ass, at least to me.

    Oops, that should say: “I totally agree that religious statements have NO place on the field”

    I am glad to see you enjoyed the Bengals uniform. I think it is funny that that redesign took around 45 minutes from start to finish, the last redesign by the Bengals took months. Sadly after seeing all of the “alternate” designs that were rejected, the current uniforms were the best option. My favorite of the awful designs was a solid black uniform with orange piping. It was the same design as the bills, there was even a “box” on the shoulder yoke outlined in orange piping.

    Yep, in the Houston Astrodome of course; I’m willing to guess that one of the last color vs. color bowl games was the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl of December 31, 1979 when Purdue pulled out a last minute win over Tennessee. It really was quite a game.

    Pretty sure UT was the designated “home” team and they allowed Purdue to wear their home black jerseys; since the game was indoors, Purdue wore black jerseys for warm weather (wide porthole mesh material w/ solid white numerals, no sleeve striping), as opposed to their regular home black jerseys (micro-mesh material, old gold numerals outlined in white, gold/white/gold sleeve stripes).

    you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, as am i, but can you point out how exactly i “kick(ed) a guy when he’s down by going after his religion”?

    did i mention anything about tebow and his religion? did i make any statements about him (aside from mentioning he lost the SEC championship)?

    or did the mere juxtaposition of a MOVIE QUOTE (and also, the same quote used in an episode of the simpsons) with tebow’s picture cause you to suddenly feel im attacking tebow, and in a larger sense, christianity?

    i have a problem with ANYONE using either their body or their uniform as a platform for their views, whether they be religious or otherwise … but for you or anyone on this board to somehow accuse me of being anti-christian, that’s simply not only untrue but unfair

    messages of ANY KIND don’t belong on eyeblack…but if i were to say, get upset at reggie bush for putting his area code on his eyeblack, i suppose some people would accuse me of being racist…

    to anyone who was offended, i apologize

    again, i respect tebow all day, and i can’t really speak for phil, but i don’t think he was trying to tear tebow down because he has a fish on his car. he was just saying florida was out, and some people are wired too tight to read it that way. i don’t think anybody is saying tebow’s personal jesus is bad, or that believing in religion, tebow’s specifically in this situation, is bad. but tebow brings that shit on himself, so the tag line is apt because he throws his personal beliefs in everybody’s face all the time always instead of keeping them to himself. if every time he had a mic in his face he spoke of something else, i am sure phil would have referenced that. i don’t think he was trying to be an ass, nor do i think his statement is assy, he was just referencing the ten commandments movie, and if you here edward g robinson’s voice in your head when you read it, it’s funny. it’s not like he referenced the wizard of oz and said screw jesus and his little tebow too.

    i have a question. does anybody know who is the “home” team in the bowl games? if espn list’s osu vs. oregon, would that mean oregon is home? normally it would. is the higher ranked team home? how it work? but i would love to try to picture what things will look like for the various games, might help me make my picks come pool time.

    Alright, I was waiting for someone to say it, but no one did. How are David Sonny’s Bengal unis different from the unis they wore before their last uni change? The black stripes in the orange look a little different and the shoulder stripes go more to the edge of the shoulder, but I can’t see how that’s not just a return back to an older style, and an ugly style at that!

    The discussion here drives me crazy when people complain about Cincy’s uniforms just because of the sidebar on the jersey and the short pants stripe. I think that has been the best uni update in the NFL since it not only incorporates some of the past elements(Tiger stripes in orange stipes), but it also takes a very pleasant leap forward with a new number style and unique sleeve stripes that I find complement the entire outfit. When they made the change the team had just taken a big step forward on the field and the update seemed to reflect the manner and mentality of that Bengals team that was looking to write a brand new chapter in the history of the Bengals franchise.

    No rip intended on David’s design, there’s just no visible difference.

    Go check out their last two uniforms. Neither of them had the abbreviated stripes angles towards the number, instead they wrapped all the way around the sleeve. Next, the sleeve numbers were in the position that was used in the first attempt at stripes in 1981, yet the stripes themselves came from the change in 1997. The alternate colored collar and sleeve bands comes from the modern uniform as does the B logo.

    Any more questions?

    the vectors were makeshift heatseal patches…they don’t hold up and peel off during the game cause it can’t handle the stretch of the jersey

    I don’t really care for monochrome looks either. I REALLY do not like Wisconsin’s away white ensemble:

    link

    Question is, what would they do in place of them? I am glad they are not going black for black sake. (No Sconnie teams do that, I don’t think)

    I guess the same goes for the monochrome whites of Oregon, and recently Florida. Do people like the Storm Trooper look?
I dont put Wisconsin in the ‘Storm Trooper’ category. Too much contrasting red. Take Oregon last year…that was a ‘Storm Trooper.’ It was basically just completely white except the numbers. The helmet has no stripes, none on the jersey, none on the pants. The diamond plating barely showed up. Wisconsin, Oregon this year and now recently Florida have too much other colors going on for a cool Storm Trooper look.

    true, context does make a difference. i figured since i referenced stripes. then again, it is an olde movie.

    Phil,

    I don’t see how the Tebow comment could have been anything other than a dig at his Christianity. It’s nothing you couldn’t have seen or read on [Deadspin, South Park, you name it], but in those venues, being offensive is the raison d’etre.

    If someone in the CBS studio had come out with your line after the game, he would have been let go, and certainly wouldn’t have been able to hide behind the defense that he was just quoting The Simpsons. To be honest, the exact same line floated through my head as I watched him cry, but that speaks only to how I had reduced Tebow to a caricature of himself.

    Tebow is under no obligation to keep his religion to himself, and you are under no obligation to keep your opposition to religion (or at least his expression thereof) to yourself, but let’s call a spade a spade.

    One other thing . . . it may still be true that an atheist would have a hard time getting elected in the U.S, but in the media/blogosphere, there is more acceptance for the most aggressive anti-religious viewpoint than there is for anything but the blandest expression of religious belief.
Seahawks are wearing their dark blue pants (that they wore with the neon green jerseys) with their blue home jerseys. I kind of like it. It breaks up the monochrome look that they usually have. I was wondering if they were ever going to use this combo.
I like that the Seahawks have a unique shade of blue, and I think the darker blue makes for a decent accent, but at least on TV (from the highlights I saw) the darker pants weren\’t distinct enough from the jerseys. Ultimately, their \”standard\” blue is not light enough for there to be sufficient contrast.

    The dark pants might be worth pairing with the white jerseys for a road game, but I think going with their usual blue pants (as they have done recently) is still better. And implementing the white pants with the blue jerseys for home games is at least worth a shot.

    The dark blue pants looked better with the green jerseys–not that it looked good, merely better than their other pant options would have. But it\’s okay if they never pull out that ensemble again.

    ironically betwixt bobbles and this whole does phil hate jesus nonsense, i had a disagreement with my pineapple about liturgical colours. i insist i have an all blue(silver and white are fine too as the reflect blue) tree every year as i have for 20 years because that is the proper colour of christmas, but she insists that purple is the colour of both the advent and lent, and my tree is heathen. have you heard anything more absurd?! a non blue christmas? totally the wrong uniform, she so does not respect god the way i do. she says i am a hell loving jesus hating lutheran, but she is so an idol worshiping catholic. i ask you, who is going to hell? i even said fine to colourful birds on the tree, but she still thinks i hate link. maybe i should suggest this to phil, but can you name the band that tune was stolen from?

    Senor Marshall,

    I am a believer in a different sort of Christmas tree. My mom’s tree has nothing but heirloom ornaments that she got from her family, ornaments my siblings or I got her, and ornaments that my siblings or I made.

    It’s fun when, instead of the aesthetic appeal, you go for the meaningful approach to Christmas. To me, Christmas is way more about what the decorations and gifts mean to you than it ever is about how it looks on the outside.

    So, yeah, my Christmas tree is going to be a bigger clusterfuck than a Buffalo sports uniform, but I don’t care, because it means something. Substance over style, any day of the week.

    i dig that, and totally agree, i was goofing slightly. the tree is about a growth, all trees are about that, my tree is of my parents tree, as their’s was. i just like blue as a colour of christmas. i rif on orange packaging and shit like that, i just like my “blue” tree. my pineapple who is a bit younger then me has birds, we can collect those as the rest of the tree stays blue. i fucking love birds, 99% of my non sports art is about birds, so i love that idea. maybe as pineapple and i grow we have a tree that is nothing but birds, but until then, it is blue tree. does that make sense?

    Oh yeah. It’s funny how Christmas is so different for so many people. My Filipino friend’s family Christmas tree was absolutely gorgeous, but everything was in absolutely perfect order. It fit them, but it would never work for me. It’s such an individualistic holiday.

    Christmas is all about what it means for you.

    I’ve only gone Black Friday shopping once in my 19 years on the face of this planet. It may have something to do with the fact that my mom makes as much as it costs me to go to U of O in a year (I’m a smart cookie though– I have enough financial aid and scholarships to not have loans), but I’m all about doing meaningful things. The incredible diversity of the things on my mother’s Christmas tree is one of the things I enjoy most about Christmas. (That, and reading ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas in every accent you can imagine… that’s unbridled hilariousness.)

    Along those lines of meaningful Christmas gifts:

    My mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas last year. I simply replied, “Goose.” My mommy is German and when she was young, every year her family would have goose. I thought it would be fantastic to celebrate that tradition again, as she had only made a Christmas goose once in my life that I could remember. The goose officially counted as one of my Christmas gifts from my mom, but it was more than worth it. It’s the only thing that I was given last year that I can expressly remember was a Christmas present.

    oops. somehow i deleted the line about how i have collected and been given/inherited blue ornaments from nephews, ma and pa, and sibs n such. didn’t know i did that. i also didn’t mention my tree is my grandparents circa 50’s tree that loses inches every year as the branches go kaput and i shave the top. i also didn’t mention many of the ornaments i have are my parents or my grandparents collected when we lived behind the iron curain. anyway, it has meaning past “blue”.

    wait, my pineaple is in school, her in st.l, me in chicago, no difference. style and function? really?!?! i told you the opposite. not that i don’t like the style, but mine it is largely a family tree with sentimental value, collected as i said when we lived behind the iron curtain. did you miss that? and i never said your tree was wrong either, dig your own tree. what is with people today? is it national crack day?

    and on greedy, that is a low fucking blow to someone who is so not. who asked you to trade/change your ways to fit my ideal, not me. you do what you want, i would never said your ideal was greedy, or anything else. why is mine?

Alright, I was waiting for someone to say it, but no one did. How are David Sonny\’s Bengal unis different from the unis they wore before their last uni change? The black stripes in the orange look a little different and the shoulder stripes go more to the edge of the shoulder, but I can\’t see how that\’s not just a return back to an older style, and an ugly style at that!

    The discussion here drives me crazy when people complain about Cincy\’s uniforms just because of the sidebar on the jersey and the short pants stripe.

    No rip intended on David\’s design, there\’s just no visible difference.

So, yeah, there’s nothing really special. Got it!
