To the Season’s Biggest Turkeys

fred1.jpg

The nice thing about Thanksgiving, aside from stuffing your face and watching the Lions lose again, is the elemental simplicity of the holiday’s premise: Surely even the most downtrodden of us has something to be thankful for. But there’s no denying that some people have a few extra blessings to count. I refer, of course, to those of us — or, rather, those of you — whose favorite team is not owned by Fred and Jeff Wilpon.

Before we get to Fred and Jeff’s latest uni-related snafu, it’s important to understand just how badly the Mets’ visual identity has deteriorated under their watch. Let these facts be submitted to a candid world: There’s been the endless procession of alternate caps; the miserable black alternate jerseys; the pointless addition of black drop shadows to everything; the shunting aside of blue as a team color, especially on the road uniform; the wearing of the road cap at home; the near-disappearance of the home pinstripes; the removal of the “NY” from the skyline logo; the needless imposition of a black skyline logo; the worst stadium-opening sleeve patch in MLB history; and on and on.

With this impressive body of work behind them, the Wilpons announced yesterday that they’re changing their home pinstripes from a white-based fabric to an off-white cream. On its face, this is fine — it’s a very small cosmetic change that I don’t mind and that most fans won’t even notice. Hooooowever:

1) Why did this “news” merit a multi-paragraph press release and an e-mail blast? Look, here’s all you need: “You know that pinstriped uni we never wear? Next year it’ll be beige instead of white,” the end. You can put that on Twitter and still have enough characters left for a few Willie Randolph jokes.

2) Let’s take a closer look at the middle of that announcement:

The Mets created the retro uniform following research and positive responses to the jerseys the 1969 World Champion Mets wore during their 40th anniversary celebration in August. The natural color and pinstripes were staples of the original Mets uniform when the team debuted in 1962.

Um, guys, you didn’t “create” anything — you just told Majestic to change the fabric from white to Pantone 155, or whatever. More importantly, though, how can you call this jersey “retro” — and how can you have the chutzpah to claim the spirits of ’62 and ’69 as your inspiration — when the new cream pinstripes will still have that accursed drop-shadow?!

It’s right about here that my head explodes.

Here are the World Series reunion jerseys referenced in the press release — the ones that supposedly generated all the “positive responses.” Notice any drop shadows there? The issue isn’t that the shadow-free script looks better than the shadowed script (although it certainly does); the issue is that the Mets can’t even do retro accurately. They can’t even describe what they’re doing accurately! It’s an affront — not just to those early, pre-Wilpon Mets squads and the fans who cheered for them, but to anyone with a functioning brain pan. I mean, seriously, you have to work pretty hard to screw up something this simple.

It’s all too much. The Bernazard thing, the vanilla stadium with the corporate name and the 37 price tiers, the GM who thinks it’s a good idea to call out a beat writer at a press conference, the bottomless pit of medical misdiagnoses — and I’m not even counting the on-field performance. I’m just talking about the most basic aspects of team ownership and stewardship. These guys aren’t just bad at it; they’re the definition of dysfunctional. If the Mets were their kid, Child Services would’ve whisked the team into foster care years ago.

And so, Fred and Jeff, in the spirit of the holiday season, I send you the following Thanksgiving wishes: I hope you gag on your turkey, spill cranberry sauce on your suits, and get gravy stains on your ties. I hope your wine is corked, your mashed potatoes lumpy, and your pumpkin pie spoiled. I hope your staff quits at the last moment and spends the day peppering you with crank calls from “me, your old pal Bernie Madoff, don’t you remember?” Then I hope you get the runs afterward. The two of you deserve nothing less.

And nothing more.

To everyone else, happy almost-Thanksgiving — travel safe today, wherever you’re heading.

(Thanks to Brian Erni for the side-by-side jersey comparison.)

Maybe it’s a new cut of jersey, not sure, but without the drop shadow, the space between the M and e on the Mets script seems really cavernous.

And you call yourself a Mets fan? Nothing so special about these, just makes the team look older and our parents feel older.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Paul, and all the contributors to this fine site.

After reading the Mets’ latest fiasco, I am ever more thankful I have a team like the Fightin’ Phils to root for.

The Mets owners are indeed morons. The black addition craze is so 90’s. Get rid of the black already! Wake up Rip Van Wilpon it’s 2009. The Mets look like a beer league team with the silly black uniforms. Tradition should mean something. Way to go uniwatch. Keep blasting the Wilpons for the morons they are.

Here is where the Mets, as well as other teams, need to seriously seek out some consulting from outside sources.

That drop shadow has got to go!

They need to talk to someone like Scott Schuman, the dude from Sartorialist/GQ fame. They need some literal expert fashion advice when deciding to do this kind of stuff.

Actually, Paul, that might be a good interview with that dude. Would be cool to get his takes on some of the uniforms.

after careful consideration, fred and jeff decided upon the dropshadow pins only because their preferred alternate didn’t have enough black in it

/eff you wilpons…who would have thought it was nelson who should have gotten the team

So adidas, a foreign company, wants to outsource more jobs to foreign lands. When the hell is the ‘Going Out of Business’ sign being posted on our borders and gov’t websites?

(I never knew that Reebok was a part of the adidas family until I did a little Googling.)

Happy Thanksgiving, Mr. Lukas. Chicken pox is dreadful as an adult, especially at Thanksgiving, especially at Thanksgiving when you should be with the rest of your family.

Meanwhile, know that your family here at Uniwatch is thankful for your attention to detail, your wit and your fantastic writing style. You, sir, give us much for which to be thankful. Thank you. And I thank my lucky stars I stumbled across the site.

Thank you to Phil, to Rick and to all the other contributors. Thanks to the Internet for allowing this community to exist.

May the Mets find their way out of the wilderness, may Nike learn humility, may Under Armor and Adidas find a clue.

Here’s my only hope…that enough people are so outraged by this jersey actually being called “retro” despite having the bullshit black in it, that come 2011 they’ll actually drop at least the drop shadow from ONE jersey.

Hold my breath I won’t…but I will hope for this until next year when they can have another ridiculous press release about a uniform or installing a “NY” logo in the urinals at Shea.

Could you give us a quick summation for those of us who don’t pay for their web content?

As a diehard Mets fan, do you guys mind if I copy and past the following Lukas quote (with proper credit of course), all over my social networking pages… since it pretty much sums up my feelings PERFECTLY:

Amazing. Paul Lukas, “The Official Voice of the 2009 Mets Fan”.

While I agree with most of what you are saying Mr. Lukas, I don’t think the black drop shadow is THAT bad to be compared to the other disasters by the Wilpons. i think the jerseys look good. Would they look better w/o drop shadow, and Mr. Met on the sleeve? Absolutely. But these are ok. You are a long time suffering Met fan, so I understand your frustrations. I am more of the optimistic Mets fan and hope for the best (not many of us left)

BTW, they are bringing back the away black unis (the New York ones).

Anywho, please keep up the great work. Love your site, and have a great thanksgiving.

I am a die hard Mets fan born in 1984 (also Jets and Islanders fan. Yes, I’m pissed I essentially missed it all) and couldn’t agree more with every single word that you said in this post, Paul. It really is such a shame. I just don’t understand this tweak. It’s so insulting to every Mets fan, especially those who took time out of their day to take a uniform survey that, apparently, was completely ignored. My mood swings on this range from anger to dejected ambivalence. Is there an organization anywhere else is sports that gives their fanbase the metaphorical middle finger than this crew? What a shame. Seriously…I don’t even know what to say anymore.

I really like link except for two things:

    1) That waistband logo is superfluous and it just looks like a link.
    2) They do not look like women’s basketball unis.

    Exactly, Paul.

Personally, I don’t mind the drop shadow on the regular unis. If they switched back to the way they used to be, fine by me…but it does make the “Mets” pop.

That being said, the black jerseys, while initially cool, have run their course. Enough. Secondly, stop with the black/blue hats and if you MUST have it, wear it strictly on the road…why a hat that is designated as “road” is worn at home 40% of the time is beyond me.

Blue at home the whole time…and like Paul said, the retro uniform isn’t retro at all with the black in it…that has us all up in arms.

To a certain extent, the Eagles give us the brush-off. From their rejection of the Kelley Green, Silver and White uniform colors, to the stupid black alts, to stopping fans from bring their own sandwiches into the Linc based on security precautions due to the 9/11 attacks, to ignoring the franchise’s history, to calling themselves the ‘Gold Standard’ of the NFL while winning zero Super Bowls. Yeah, the front office has given us the finger more than once.

About 10 years ago, Emporia State football had black and gold horizontal bands on the helmets (hornets – get it?). I haven’t found a picture yet.

I hate to say it, but I’m one of the lifelong Met fans that likes the black. The orange and royal blue are too similar in value, and thus are visually mush. Tradition aside, I never liked the royal pinstripes – also punchless. That said, aesthetically questionable decisions are being made: the black jersey and the all-black cap are an abomination, and black/cream/orange/royal will be nasty together.

Way to go Paul. Dead on as always.

For those who like the black, the Mets have 3 or 4 other jerseys with black in it. Why couldn’t they at least do this one without it for those of us who love the old school design. It is not so much that the balck Mets stuff exists, it is that they have decided that it has to be included in EVERYTHING! I am surprised that they haven’t put a black button on top of the blue cap. Crap, now that I gave them the idea they might!

a question for the designers around the site: i often hear the argument “the dropshadow makes the ‘mets’ script pop,” but that doesn’t make sense to me at all. wouldn’t that purpose already be served with the orange outline? like…i actually understand how maybe the orange dropshadow on the black alts make the script ‘pop’ off the jersey because it’s a lighter color on a darker fabric. but…how does this hold true for the black dropshadow on the two white jerseys? i think it just takes away the negative space and makes the mark more muddied and clunkier looking.
I like the black drop shadow.
well it nicely distracts your eye from the fact that the coolbase ruins the pins’ continuity

of course, this problem is not limited to the mets, but the whole thing looks like shit

but who cares, right? the kids like the black (and apparently not orange) and it’s only a uniform

“Preach, Paul!” Nice. I feel a t-shirt coming. Those words on one side, no shadow, and a stirrup silhouette on the other.

My contribution for today is a note on my wretchedly led team, The Golden State Warriors. And, of course, ancient Chinese uniforms. The very mention of the Warriors should make Mets fans feel a less woe and the plague of pox and Wilpons a little less itchy.

As for the link to Chinese history, the Warriors have recently won two games in a row while extremely short-handed and are now calling themselves “stone soldiers,” after the famous Terracotta Army of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, which some of the players saw on a trip to China last year.

    Buried deep in this blog-post:

    Army:

One of the famed soldiers sporting their version of Nike pro combat:

All this as a reminder that uniforms have always mattered and that the soldiers always outlive their emperors.

    Eat well, everyone.

I know Eagles fans in the Lurie era have felt a certain disconnect with the organization, but I’d never say that their front office is straight-up dysfunctional (as Paul did with the Mets). With the Mets, it’s impossible to say who is really in charge of acquiring and managing talent.

Beaver on a bat throwback! With inexplicable pinstripes! And as a Twins affiliate!

It’s hard to feel sorry for for Mets fans when, as a Pirates fan, I’ve had to live through 16 losing seasons and those hideous ketchup red jerseys.

*That* was a baseball uniform. Clean and classic. I was never a fan of the thin white lining on the text and numbers (made it look like the pinstripes never quite got to their destinations), but man, I’d take that in a heartbeat now if it meant ditching the drop-shadow.

    Rule of thumb?

When the drop shadow fills in–or virutally fills in–the center of script letters like “e” and “s” you probably shouldn’t use it.

One of the things I’m thankful, is this blog takes issues – that bother me, but I don’t give ample thought to, and takes them to a whole new level – like the NY Mets uni debacle. As an Expos fan growing up – who disliked the Mets, almost as much as the Phillies, I’m only so sympathetic, but I see the same uniform loss of identity happening with the Toronto Blue Jays and other teams

I wonder if the Cleveland Cavaliers – are mishandling their uniform identity with having so many unis. Players like Lebron James – are once in 50 years for a franchise, yet there isn’t one distinctive LeBron Cavaliers jersey. Are they selling more by having so many?

… Hmmm, interesting design. That’s Emporia State, a D-II school from Kansas (with thanks to Brian Hansen). …

While I agree that black belongs no where near the Mets’ color scheme, my beef with the black dropshadow is that it is simply UGLY. It clutters the chest logo and leaves the players’ names almost illegible. It’s extremely frustrating to keep hearing that the dropshadow makes it “pop”.

Secondly, while I hate the black, I actually prefer the black/blue hats to the blue hats…simply because they better match the uniform set. If the Wilpons intend on keeping black drop shadows, they might as well include some type of black on the hats for aesthetic purposes. Though they may consistently try and fail, they can’t have their cake and eat it too.

WTF I’m sick of these teams f*cking up the retro design. 49ers, Sixers, etc. And here, the Mets just top it off. They all have the right ideas, and are a BIG improvment of the past, just they always seem to minorly ruin the design which just screws the whole thing up. How the hell can you have a black dropshadow around the “Mets”? In fact, dropshadows have simply ruined uniforms in general.

The 49ers f*cked theirs up by keeping their original logo on there helmet and neglecting to wear the striped socks.

The Sixers were on the right idea (Block numbering/lettering, no dropshadow) but they had to ad stupid blue triangle designs by the armpit and neck.

However, there are teams actually did it smart, such as the JETS, GIANTS, new TWINS saturday home uni (Don’t care for their road jerseys though).

The Mets have now officially surpassed the Oakland Raiders as the dumbest franchise in all of sports.

Even though I think the drop-shadow is (at best) tolerable when worn with blue caps and undersleeves, this is just a ridiculous, completely unnecessary, and as has been increasingly and alarmingly the case, patently DISHONEST move by the Mets. If I see this beige jersey worn with the two-tone cap just once, I’m gonna lose it.

The Mets and I have been ‘separated’ since the end of April, as I swore off watching this depressing team until after the Bar Exam, by which time they had managed to become even more depressing. I think now it’s time to start thinking about converting that separation into a divorce.

Just a thought on adidas moving production of NBA game uniforms to overseas…

Guess the crosstown douchebags are finally creeping into adidas HQ.

I used to be a big fan of “My Name Is Earl”, until two seaons ago the formula & happy endings got to be really redundant, and then it had its Jumped the Shark moment when Paris Hilton appeared on a cheesy ‘Earl sitcom-dream’ episode. Same fate happened to “When I Met Your Mother”, evolved seasons turned into crappy writing & then Britney Spears appeared, basically the sitcom equivalent of putting black on a Mets uniform. Some people said, “Hey it’s not that bad”. No, it is bad. It is one of the worst things ever.

The Mets front office is a victim of their own stupidity. If I recall in the mid-1990s, the Mets merchandise wasn’t selling very well, and the Mets discovered they could make a shitload of money “doing every possible combination wrong”. The Mets look wasn’t “legendary status” enough to leave it completely alone, and of course Modernists said “it was the perfect update”, which is their reasoning on tinkering with any uniform look.

Has anyone here ever heard of “mummified” turkey?

    1) stuff a turkey with apples & celery (and possibly oranges).
    2) cover turkey in bacon strips.
    3) take a roll of cotton gauze and wrap the entire turkey with it. As you’re wrapping, soak the gauze with melted butter.
    4) slow-cook at 275 degrees.

I was just at the dentist and the hygienist told me that was going to be her contribution to her family’s Thanksgiving meal. She said she’s using a 10-pounder.

Having been all worked up by the other Nike Rifelry unis, I failed to notice until now the black Mizzou decal on the helmet… wtf?

Although, I must say I do dig the pants… as I did (dare I say it because of my hatred for the sooners) the OU pants.

I’ve always thought the black dropshadow on the Mets jersey made the wordmark clunky (the opposite of making it pop) from a distance. Let’s call it “blobulous”.

I think a good rule of thumb regarding outlines on lettering and numbering is that you never, ever need more than one. If you have a blue script with an orange outline, you are done. No need for the dropshadow. Or if you have a blue jersey with white numbering and a red outline, you are done. Don’t throw silver in there just because you can.

The Browns have done everything possible to alienate their fanbase. There are people who think the team is planning to trade Josh Cribbs just to spite the fans. No offense man but attendance numbers and such just dont really mean anything. The city has been and will always be a Yankees city just for the fact of how dominant the Yankees have been in the franchise’s history. The ONLY reason i can see NYC being painted orange and blue if the Mets do win a world series or two is because we both know the Mets do not have winning seasons year after year like the yankees do. Theres just something really sweet about going from bad to WS champs that NYC seems to love. The Yankees are expected to win year after year and it can get a bit monotonous for the NY Fan. They are looking for something different and if the Mets can pull it out and give the fans that different, then yes NYC will love them, possibly more then the yankees at that present time, but in no way will it ever change what the Yankees have done for the city and the impact have here in the bronx.

    hmmm, interesting.

    1. Malcom Glazer’s sons have singlehandedly (can you say that when there’s 2 of them?) destroyed Manchester United.

    2. I certainly hope Jerry Jones has some offspring that have the time & inclination to help ruin that franchise.

    3. Could this phenomena be reversed if say a moron like Dan Snyder ‘s progeny get involved? After all, after Dan, there’s only UP, no?

    4. Lastly, it’s a weak argument as the franchise was and is a flagship —but the NYGiants are at least as successful w/ John Mara and Tisch Jr. running the shop, no?

If the purpose of creating multiple jerseys and hats is to sell merchandise, I wonder how successful that ploy is. If you have fewer choices, you have an easier decision to make as to which one to purchase. When a team has several options on how to dress, it suggests to me that the team has an identity crisis and the fan is confused as to which model actually represents his team. Of course, the source of confusion for the Mets is that historically they are linked with the Dodgers and Giants and have incorporated their predecessors’ colors into their uniforms. Perhaps they would have been better off if they had created their own identity from scratch and used completely different colors.

so true Tom… i recall walking on Wall St the day after a World Series clinching game and seeing seas of Twins hats!!!!!

Twins!!!!! Mind you, that would not be so laughable or out of place in Minneapolis or St. Paul, but in Downtown Manhattan…. WTF!!! That’s one example and closer to home as it were: after the fall of ’96 everyone was a Yankme/Derek Jeter fan —when just two yrs. earlier, i sat at the stadium and they were announcing crowds of 24k for the brewers or tigers.

New Yorkers are pathetic, don’t let them tell you otherwise–don’t buy the ‘greatest city in the world’ tripe.

Most of the repliers (read that, “Oh, yeah? Well…”) are missing the point. No one claimed anything other than that for a couple of periods in their history the Mets have been the hotter show in town, in terms of general attention and the adoration of the unaffiliated, casual fan.

One of those periods happened to roughly coincide with a time when Yankees really were pretty awful.

No one, originally, about debating which team draws/drew more people, etc. Was a simple statement there have been times when the Mets were the darling.

And that’s true. Just because someone doesn’t remember it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t so.

We can argue the semantics here all day. The Mets have never ‘owned’ this town. They have a HUGE fan base that gets passionate as hell when the Mets are good… but they have never ‘owned’ the town.

Today’s Wall Street Journal has an article regarding professional teams’ “sorry” letters to fans after poor seasons. They mashed together several letters into one and created a mashed-up logo of all the teams they quote in the letter. Fantastic!

Nice reference to the Declaration of Independence. Get well soon, and Thanks for the great content.
Uni Watch is one of several things to be thankful for this year.

Fine. They leased it for a few years.

    Happy now?

    1) Why did this “news” merit a multi-paragraph press release and an e-mail blast? Look, here’s all you need: “You know that pinstriped uni we never wear? Next year it’ll be beige instead of white,” the end. You can put that on Twitter and still have enough characters left for a few Willie Randolph jokes.

Sometimes it’s nice to see the teams actually get to disseminate their own information (spin) on a subject and not get “leaked” by 3rd party bloggers and logo “savants”. I give Thanks for that.

there are many reasons the mets will never ditch the black

the fact that the cream dropshadows are going on sale on black friday is no coincidence either

but there is good news for those who shop early on black friday:

“From 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the new pinstripe jersey will be 20 percent off, Season Ticket Holders will receive 40 percent off all regularly priced merchandise, and all fans will get 35 percent off regularly priced merchandise. The new pinstripe jersey will be 15 percent off from 10:00 a.m. until the store closes at 5:00 p.m. After 10:00 a.m., the following schedule will apply for regularly priced items:

    10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: 30 percent off
    12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: 25 percent off

I think maybe someone has to have been around and aware in 1969 and during the Yankees’ sucky seasons to understand that the references were to media attention, being the topic of conversation among serious baseball fans, and interest shown by casual fans. In that sense, there decidedly WAS a shift over to the Mets on occasion. And THAT’s what the original past was about.

“Qwning the town” doesn’t have to last very long, or have empirical data to support it, to be true. It isn’t an empirical sort of thing, anyway.

All he was saying was that it seems kind of hard to believe these days. Which apparently is true, because some Yankee fans evidently can’t, or refuse to, believe it ever was so.

He wasn’t looking for a debate. Because there isn’t one. He said nothing untrue.

“What? My team hasn’t always be super colossal number one?” No, it hasn’t. A) It was a real bad organization there for a few years, and B) the Mets have been accorded the center ring once in a while.

Someone would have to have no sense of reality to contend that in the fall of ’69 the Mets weren’t the talk of baseball and sports, in New York and elsewhere. And that’s the kind of thing he meant—and what IS meant—by “owning the town” for a while.

    Live with it. Jeez.

Okay, I don’t think these words were in the ESPN article I read yesterday:

“In a statement, Adidas said it was consolidating its supply chain and moving production closer to the source of uniform materials.”

“The Adidas Group continues to produce uniforms for professional, college and other amateur teams at more than 30 facilities in North America and will continue to do so moving forward,” Adidas said.

So there are other places in America to do the unis. Sounds as if there’s room for a compromise.

First of all, it’s not like I don’t get it. I’m a Jet fan so I understand about being second fiddle in a town. Periods of success? Sure. Points in time when most of the attention was on them? Yes. But to me the test ISN’T when one team is good and the other is not. Show me a period when both are good and that’ll tell you who owns the town.

Secondly, my ‘smug, Yankee-fan superiority’ is, no doubt, infuriating. Your ‘I’m older so I must know better’ is too.

While I get that some people believe the black dropshadow works for them (it pops!), I believe it ruins the look entirely. I will not try to convince the ignorant dropshadow-lovers they are misguided, but I do ask them to take a look at the Twins’ sublime new throwback/retro alternate, which is sans dropshadow. See?

The problem the Mets are gonna have with all these little changes is that when the highlight history of the team is put together it’ll be a big mess… Seaver in pinstripes, Doc Gooden, etc with stripes down the sleeves, Bernard Gilkey in his ice cream suit, Piazza in black, David Wright in cream… too many changes. You look at most teams with history and there’s a distinct connection between periods. Jeter looks like Gehrig, Youkilis looks like Ted Williams, Derek Lee looks like Ernie Banks, Andre Ethier looks like Jackie Robinson…

Paul….outstanding article. The Mets got my hopes up when they said they were creating a retro jersey that would be based on the 1969 jerseys (and the “positive response” that they received). Well, I should have known better. These are the Wilpons we are talking about. They essentially said “we listened to what the fans wanted and we gave them something completely different.” Couldn’t they have just thrown us a bone this one time? Making this a true retro uni would have gone a long way in making those of us who hate the black very, very happy. But instead, they just insult our intelligence (again) and tell us we should be excited about(and eager to spend $129.95 on) a jersey whose differences from the previous one can only be noticed when it is pointed out (maybe that’s why they issued the press release).

You are right on the money, Paul. Only the Mets can screw up a uniform that is based on a design that already exists. Someone needs to tell them that virtually every other team has dropped black as an added team color years ago. But that’s been the Mets MO for years…take everybody else’s bad ideas and run with them.

Maybe we’ll get a Turn Back the Clock to Turn Forward the Clock Day and see the Mercury Mets again. Anything for a buck.

The pattern on the sleeves has nothing to do with the pattern on the shoulders. Those undershirts were around last year. I remember Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount wearing them last year. It’s a generic Nike pattern, as other people on other teams have worn them as well.

Speaking of the Ducks, I’ve updated week 3 Duck(my fave) with green sleeves, ala LaMichael James style. I did notice that he’s got a pattern on his sleeves that I thought were the shoulder wings, yet, on closer inspection I don’t think they are? Anyone know what the graphic is?

well, they’re in. but i have to work the parade thursday, will stuff envelopes friday or this weekend, and mail them out monday at the latest.

those who thought that previous orders were too large will not feel that way about these. i ordered the size that was suggested, and on my 6’5″ frame they are top of the calf. pretty cool tube socks really, top notch.

as for the oaks(xmas) stirrup, WOW!!! get you some red sanis or socks, i tried mine on that way and it looks amazing.

By the way, you said at one point that the quality of play really wasn’t that bad. Has that held up throughout the season?
If you can get past the unis (which ain’t easy or even possible, believe me) the games have at least been entertaining, I’ll give them that.

As a new league, that’s exactly whay you hope for: nobody looks like a stumblebum and the game’s are fun.

They could be pushing individual players harder, I think. But we’ve already seen they’re not big on pushing individual teams, at least as far as unis go.

This morning, someone from the New York Mets called me personally to discuss my concerns about the dropshadow. Her message was very nice and understanding, but she said that the team had done research and found that people seemed to like it.

While not the response I was hoping for, it is nice to know that the Mets do read messages submitted via the Contact Us page on their website and that a polite, concise message that includes all of your contact information will be read and (possibly) responded to personally.

    Huzzah!

Here’s something you don’t see very often. The Blackhawks have scored their first three goals shorthanded tonight. Two of them came while killing the same (2-minute) penalty.

And I just saw the 2 comments by 2 wiseguys here about the OSU so called throwbacks.

    Very funny Phil and Jim.

you mean those nike unis aren’t accurate?

And to yesterdays column or maybe it was the day before. I loved that picture of the Packers 1950 in color.

The Mets do need to drop the shadow look, that is more of a New York Ranger thing. I e-mailed the Buffalo Bills hours after they fired Jauron and begged them now is a great time to see a new traditonal but modern uniform,…!

Millions of people who listened to anybody in the media think so. I knew that was going to happen.

I think Vida Blue and Jack Clark still have theirs.

isn’t it a new bp cap (don’t know if that’s new) that’s being talked about?

think most teams are getting new bp caps this year

My theory? Some on the Nike design staff wanted to put that “O” dead center on the back. But got outvoted.

    It was 18-16.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the big O repositioned on Oregon’s helmet as a halo motif.

    As seen on FU.com:

Look, aside from not being quite as nice or stylish as either the Phillies or Giants’ cream-colored uniforms (or the Indians…or, well, you get the idea), it does nothing to solve the long-running disaster that is the Mets’ uniform. Frankly, they could send the players out in blue pasties and an orange g-string and it would be less embarrassing than the already-having-jumped-the-shark-in-1998 black jerseys, hats and so on (black uniforms were cool for about 20 minutes in 1992 — a fact lost on Jeff Wilpon, seemingly still listening to MilliVanilli and Vanilla Ice on his WalkMan).

Here’s what I think about Mets management:
Several years ago, I had tickets to a Mets Yankee game in June at Shea. This was before Citifield even broke ground. I was a little late and was directed to park all the way by the Unisphere and had to be bussed back to Shea! For this I paid full price for parking. After the game, I hopped back on the bus to try to find my car. Alas, it was pitch black with no lights there. Emails and phone calls to the Mets for an explanation were NEVER returned.

paul, you’re right on … my mets can’t seem to do anything right. there is no question that there is nothing “retro” about the ugly black drop shadow. can you imagine the dodgers adding drop shadow? or the yankees adding some grey behind the “NY” to give it more “pop?” – mets are run by idiots that cant seem to anything right … i hope they paint the citifield wall blue – and you know the ugly black uniforms and hats will be worn more than any other uniform again 2010 .. ugh!

I am one of the few Mets die hard fans that likes the black. However, have to admit this announcement of “retro” jersey is misleading, as it is most titles to the Mets caps and unis.. The script should have been the original one not with the black drop if they were going to go retro. Makes you wonder….

They should wear more pinstripses, use blue caps on the road, and be more consistant as to the days they wear the “alternates”…

I notice there are lots of people against the black but I will hate see it go…I think it looks good..but let’s not lose the blue….

    My five cents…

Do you know why equipment masnager Charlie Samuels, who seems to have a hard-on for the black hats and jerseys, has so much power in deciding which unis the Mets wear for each game?
