Reader Michael Kotler has noticed something really interesting going on in Japanese baseball. I’ll let him explain:
As we all know, MLB players can’t wear the number 42 (besides Mariano). But I’ve noticed that in Japan, a lot of foreign players wear 42. I looked into and it seems there are six foreigners wearing it: Marcus Gwyn of the Rakuten Golden Eagles; Marc Kroon of the Tokyo Giants; Tom Mastny of the Yokohama Baystars; Tony Blanco of the Chunichi Dragons; Brian Sweeney of the Nippon Ham Fighters; and Jonah Bayliss of the Seibu Lions.
Six players may not sound like much, but there are only 12 teams in Japan, and each team is only allowed to have four foreigners on its roster. So having one of the four players foreign players on half of the teams wearing 42 seems a little odd.
Is it just that most of these players wore 42 when they were young and wanted to continue it? Is it that they just want to wear 42 because they know they couldn’t back in the States (all except Blanco are American)? Is it that they all want to honor Jackie Robinson (which I think would be pretty cool)? Or is it just a ridiculous coincidence?
Good questions. One question that immediately came to mind was whether any of the six other Japanese teams had a Japanese player wearing No. 42. So I asked Kotler that, and he said and he promptly reported that four of the six have 42s on the roster: the Hanshin Tigers, Toyo Carp, Yakult Swallows, and Chiba Lotte Marines.
So the situation is this: Ten players in Japan wear No. 42, and six of them are non-Japanese players. Hmmmm. Mark in Shiga, Jeremy Brahm, and our other Japanese baseball experts, can any of you shed any light on this?

This is a total tangent but the beer coozy shown in the video (Algoma Penguins) brings back my biggest sports wear regret. I had my mother on the lookout at yard/garage/rummage/tag sales for vintage stuff and one time she came up huge. She bought a beautiful Algoma Penguins warm-up jacket for me. It had all the earmarks of a classic baseball warm-up jacket in red with black and tan trim. But the kicker was that it had a beautifully sewn embroidered penguin over the breast. It was also 3-D and I have seen little like it since–it was puffed up with fabric to create a penguin body and it was executed flawlessly. Unfortunately it was also a men\’s small so it would never fit me. I was moving a few years later and had a few people over and was randomly giving stuff to people and gave it to a woman it would fit well. (It turns out another woman there that day would bring up the jacket relentlessly to the woman I gave it to and I heard eventually she wore the other woman down and she probably has it in storage some where).
Those Real Valladolid kits are positively garish. Made even worse by the stupid Puma collarbone design trim thing. It looks okay on plain shirts, but when it interrupts stripes it looks stupid.
Of course when those stripes are purple and black, you’re already pretty low on the looks scale.
Being a Mountaineer, I HATE Pitt…but I will say those new unis are really nice. Huge improvement over their old ones, especially that crappy number font they’ve used in the recent past. Now all they need to do is to bring back the cursive Pitt logo and they’ll be good to go.

Actually, out of the Japanese #42s currently, only one of those players is not a pitcher.

In my opinion, it is probably the following, a player joins a new team (foreigner in this case) and he has no idea what numbers are available. What number you like to wear? I wore 27 in the States, well our star player wears that. What do you have left? Pitchers tend to have higher numbers a number in the 40s looks fine for a pitcher. Not saying the 20s isn’t bad either, but Tom Seaver (#41) anyone?

Michael Westbay’s been running this site for like 10 years now. It is the best place to start. Plus he’ll even translate articles from the Japanese sports dailies to provide additional information that you may not find in the English papers.
Don’t forget the Japan Times and Daily Yomiuri papers. They have game reports for each day and a couple of columns on what is happening every week.

RobT, it is really difficult to get the right sizes for replica Japanese uniforms in the States. As you can see in my picture.

This was the biggest size available, which is called an XO and it is still incredibly tight. If you get an authentic uniform, those are much more expensive ($350 or more) and you can rarely find those in the States.
Yakyu shop is one of the few, but I know that they do about as good as they can.

If you are thin, buy the replica uniform, if you are a bigger guy, go to Japan to buy the authentics, which may take a little more time and let alone cost. Plus you would need to visit the team store to buy them. Most retailers only sell the replicas. The uniform that you see is a replica that a friend of mine bought for me in Japan.

And I can answer the question, too!
The Japanese language contains two series of number words, one native, and one adopted from Chinese. The native one goes like this: 1 hitotsu, 2 futatsu, 3 mittsu, 4 yottsu, 5 itsutsu, 6 muttsu, 7 nanatsu, 8 yattsu, 9 kokonotsu, 10 to. The Chinese-based one is: 1 ichi, 2 ni, 3 san, 4 shi, 5 go, 6 roku, 7 shichi, 8 hachi, 9 kyu (or ku), 10 ju.
They also love numerical puns and associations, and the language (in part because they adopted many Chinese words about 1500 years ago without adopting Chinese tones) contains a huge number of homophones.
One of the biggest ones, looking at those number words, is that the word shi (æ»), meaning “death”, sounds like the number 4 (å››). Four is the unluckiest number because of this, and so many Japanese people like to avoid 4, whereas foreign athletes wouldn’t have a problem with it. A double-four is worse, but for American imports it’s just the number of Hank Aaron and Reggie Jackson, so many foreign players have worn it. The Hanshin Tigers alone have had George Altman, Lance Parrish, Cecil Fielder, and link.
Similarly, the word ku can mean both “9” (ä¹) and “pain” (苦). So number 49 is avoided by Japanese players, whereas Americans like link don’t mind it.
The number 42 brings to mind shi-ni, part of the conjugation for another form of the word “to die”, so it too is unlucky. But not for the imports, such as, in addition to the players mentioned above, Alex Cabrera, Julio Zuleta, Dan Serafini, and Brian Sikorsky.

I wouldn’t discount the idea of players choosing it because of Robinson. No matter what your ethnicity, a foreign person in Japan (even a rich ballplayer) is going to endure a bit of discrimination from time to time. I’m guessing that a few of them get a renewed appreciation for what Robinson had to endure, and like having his number. I’m happy to see so many people choosing it.

Likewise, your expectation of privacy exists only in relationship to the government. Your employer, for example, can dig into just about anything they want…in their workplace or relating to it.

Paul that diamond studded first base coach, George Hendrick, could be considered your arch enemy. I can’t prove this, but I know that I have heard on national broadcasts that Hendrick was one of the first players that went anti-stirrup by wearing his pants long during his playing days.

Actually, “because they can” is precisely the answer. There’s no mandate or imperative — First Amendment-wise or otherwise — to publish a cartoon. Newspaper editors make value judgments every day in terms of what they feel is and isn’t appropriate to run in their papers. Sometimes it involves staff-created material, sometimes it involves syndicated material. That’s not censorship; it’s editorial evaluation. Now, you may think a given evaluation is stupid, but that doesn’t mean it’s morally, ethically, or professionally wrong.

My actual answer would be that they choose what to print. No newspaper is an unbiased, unslanted publication. I do not read the washington post, but I would imagine that if the editors decided that comic hits too close to home, or as the writer said, the satire was not immediately apparent to those who still drink the haliburton kool-aid, then yeah they can yank the strip. Once again they are a private company, and I am sure that it is within the guidelines of their agreement to run the strip that they have discretion when it comes these issues. As is pointed out in the article, they are subbing it with a syndication approved archived strip.
Pretty sure newspapers have the right to not run a strip based on “inappropriate content” or something. They can’t edit a strip, but they can opt to run it or not run it on any given day.
Besides, I thought it was a stretch. Wasn’t sure if it was a comment on Dick, Vick or both.
Although I’m probably the last one who should be commenting on a comic strip, other than to say I think most of them today work too hard at being “insightful, profound, topical…” whatever. That approach costs them a light-hearted attitude that I think is necessary for a strip to work.
But that’s just me.

The Post placed Doonesbury in its op-ed pages years ago, I suppose because it expouses political opinions rather than the mindless dreck found in most “cartoons”. They treat it like Toles (and before him, Herblock) probably to avoid a lot of blowback from those who want their comics to be aimed at 7 year olds. (And for some reason, they place “Dilbert” in the Business section, allowing me to immediately trash the comics without opening it). But, happy 35th, Tank, I guess?

A few other things:
– I love the Sixers’ new floor. It’s better than the new unis.
– I posted this late last night so I’ll ask again; I know I’m in the minority becasue I don’t think the LV Locomotives look that bad, but can we all agree they look better than some of the current NFL updated unis?
– I miss the old-school blocking technique in that Broncos pic. I’m only 5-10 and in college I weighed about 170, but in our pickup football games I occasionally had to play the line. I always blocked old-school and kept some pretty big guys away from my QB. Why can’t today’s hulks do it?
– Anyone else have flickr problems the last couple of days? Some pics from there have been taking a little longer for me. Just wondered if there was a flickr hackr out there.

It’s worth it. There are some great full-page photos in the Prologs. I tried to post some yesterday that showed the Oilers’ and Chargers’ 25th anniversary patches, but I was having flickr problems.

I have the ’72 Super Bowl issue. Not in the greatest of shape, but it has lots of pics of the QBs they rated, and there’s a three-page color comic about Cosell, Gifford and Meredith being drafted to help out some team that looks a lot like the Giants. Not bad at all. I’m sure it’s hardly worth as much as that Namath issue, though.
This version of the Pitt uniform post script era are by far the best. It is not even close IMO. No shadow lettering; a clean classic look and a better flat gold color. Stripes on the pants look great (though I’d love to see all versions of colors). Stripes on the helmet are ideal. I think they are finally realizing that less is certainly more and the clean look produces more revenue for the Dept. I agree there should be previously taken photos of the unis so that we can see them better. I’d love the script back, but these uniforms are certainly better than anything we’ve seen in the past 12 years. HTP and well done designers.

Michael Westbay’s been running this site for like 10 years now. It is the best place to start. Plus he’ll even translate articles from the Japanese sports dailies to provide additional information that you may not find in the English papers.
Don’t forget the Japan Times and Daily Yomiuri papers. They have game reports for each day and a couple of columns on what is happening every week.

A: The Nets are still in the Brendan Byrne Arena (aka CAA; aka Izod Center). They haven’t moved since they left the Rutgers Athletic Center over 30 years ago.
B: Ratner’s palace in Brooklyn will never be built. Frank Gehry pulled out because Ratner couldn’t afford to build his arena. Ratner was looking for a new architect, but I’ve read that Ratner is looking for buyers for the Nets now.
C: The Nets will move in to the Prudential Center in Newark.

Woodies’ World on ESPN Classic today had segment at the end about the history of baseball uniforms. It was very good. They talked about the satin uniform try and Brooklyn’s checked uniforms that have been discussed here before.
Even had about catalogs showing material. I have been dvring the show since last week as well as Sports Challenge which is fun to watch too.

I was remembering a really funny story in SI about that Indiana team by John Underwood (I believe it was), titled “PUNT, JOHN, PUNT”, or something.
There also was an hysterical piece on Lee Corso the same season (I was beginning to really notice the excellence of the writing at SI about then)…and I obviously entangled the two in my mind.
Corso, of course, was head man at Louisville.

From what I’m hearing, these uniforms are only to be used for their “showcase” season. Apparently, next year each team can design their own unis.
This whole league seems to scream we have no idea how to do this properly. I get the short season, but they should at least have legit unis. For this league to succeed, they need to get the first impression right and these unis will probably scare people off. On another site I hear people saying these looked like Fubu jerseys. So maybe the UFL is trying to bring those people into the league as their fan base.

Wishful thinking.
Ratner already has a new architect – Ellerbe Becket. And unlike Gehry, they actually specialize in stadiums, so the process will smoothen out.
In addition, the legal challenges continue to fall. It will be built. And yes, Ratner is trying to sell part or all of his interest, but the same rumors are that relocation will be part of the deal.
Naysayers have long downplayed the project, but it continues to move forward.

Different tastes I guess. I like all of those better than this.
My biggest problem with this uniform “system” is that stupid stripe across the front. I’m not a huge fan of lime/neon green as a base colour, but it works. I mean does any casual sports fan remember much about the WLAF other than the Orlando Thunder? I’m just surprised that these jerseys weren’t the Florida Tuskers, who are based in Orlando. At least some football fans would have a connection to them.

They revamped the format several times. That brochure (teams had to get something out to the public) may well say something that subesquently changed. And, to tell you the truth, I don’t even remember what format they settled on. For reasons that have to do with breached contracts, lost revenue, a lawsuit, a 90-year-old judge who fell asleep on the bench during testimony and retired mid-trial (really, lol), etc., I have pushed a lot of it out of my mind. I do remember the five-set test matches (one in Denver, one in Detroit) lasted WAY too long, so they settled on some variation.

This from the Wiki bio on Lamonica (yeah, I know, hardly reliable, but does have some stats)…
“Lamonica played for one season (1975) in the short-lived World Football League as quarterback of the Southern California Sun, where in limited time he went 9 for 19 and gained 90 yards for 1 touchdown.” So he played during the USFL’s second season.
Was gonna mention Tony Adams, but didn’t think anyone would remember him. He also was the Vikings QB during the “replacement” season in ’87.
Also not mentioned often, but Danny White’s pro career started with the Memphis Southmen/Grizzlies.

That’s how I remember it, with doubles and singles alternating, and the home team choosing the order of sets.
i think they may have changed it later on – it may have been first team to WIN three sets – instead of a cumulative # of total games won, and it may even have been just 3 matches TOTAL in the end
but at the beginning was definitely 5 total sets
At some point, they required the team that won the match to win the last game (to avoid matches that were over after three sets), so if the team that won the last set was behind in the match, they continued until the match leader won a game or the last set winner won the match. The Triangles only lasted three years, though, and I don’t know how the rules might have changed afterward.

A: The Nets are still in the Brendan Byrne Arena (aka CAA; aka Izod Center). They haven’t moved since they left the Rutgers Athletic Center over 30 years ago.
B: Ratner’s palace in Brooklyn will never be built. Frank Gehry pulled out because Ratner couldn’t afford to build his arena. Ratner was looking for a new architect, but I’ve read that Ratner is looking for buyers for the Nets now.

Ratner already has a new architect – Ellerbe Becket. And unlike Gehry, they actually specialize in stadiums, so the process will smoothen out.
In addition, the legal challenges continue to fall. It will be built. And yes, Ratner is trying to sell part or all of his interest, but the same rumors are that relocation will be part of the deal.

You sure thats from 52? The first pic is of Burt Shotton, who was Dodger manager from 48-50. He was one of the last managers to wear sreetclothes on the bench, so to get around the rule that everyone had to be in uniform, he usually wore a crappy Dodger jacket or sweater or something – so he was about 50 years ahead of guys like Francona.
Shotton was a Branch Rickey toady, and after getting clobbered in the 49 Series by the Yankees, and then blowing the 50 pennant to the Phillie Whiz Kids, Rickey sold out to O’Malley, and Shotton was goners – to be replaced by Chuck Dressen, who proceeded to BLOW the 51 Pennant, and then lose two WS to the Yankees that the Dodgers should have won at least one of….
The NYC writers HATED Shotton, and one of them – Dick Young probably – always referred to him as KOBS: Kindly Old Burt Shotton

Not at all. All I meant was the people who wear that kind of stuff. The reason I put it that way, is at least here in Saskatoon nobody wears Fubu stuff, so I dunno who the target audience may be if that’s the idea.
