Check Your Head

Picture 3.png

We all know there are several MLB teams that have inconsistent logo sets. The “D” on the Tigers’ cap is different from the one on their jersey, the Yankees have several different “NY” treatments, and so on.

But until a few days ago, I didn’t realize (or maybe had just forgotten) that the A’s also fall into this category. They have two different treatments of their stylized “A” (note the differences in the “feet” and the apostrophes, among other subtle distinctions). Oddly, both logo treatments show up on the team’s home page banner. Even odder, they use one version on their caps and the other on their helmets. So the A’s don’t just have an inconsistent logo program; they have an inconsistent headwear logo program.

I hadn’t thought about any of this until reader Mark Halling pointed out that Jason Giambi had recently been wearing the cap version of the logo on his helmet. “He’s been wearing it for at least the past two or three weeks,” Mark wrote to me. “And he’s clearly the only one on the team wearing it.”

So yesterday afternoon I forwarded Mark’s observation to A’s equipment manager Steve Vucinich. “You may have finally ”˜gotten’ me,” he wrote back. “My entire staff was in my office when I read your e-mail. Nobody had any idea about this. A batboy retrieved Giambi’s helmet and then checked with everyone else’s. We just checked about 100 helmets. That’s the ONLY one!”

I asked Steve if he had any insights as to how this could have happened, but at that point he had to start preparing for last night’s game (I’ll fill you in if/when he follows up with me). And those preparations apparently included a quick decal switcheroo to Giambi’s lid, which suddenly had the helmet version of the logo for last night’s game (here’s a quick comparison). So once again, a Uni Watch reader’s observation has had a direct on-field effect.

Meanwhile, there was another notable aspect to last night’s A’s/Tigers game: With stirrup-meister Josh Outman having undergone surgery earlier in the day, Oakland’s other starting pitchers gave him a hosiery salute (although Trevor Cahill appears to have worn his stirrups backwards). And Adam Kennedy wore low-cut ’rups, although he also wore them the night before, so it might be more of a slump-buster thing than an Outman tribute. Big thanks to John Grow for those last two screen shots (and for pointing out that Adam Everett still has an orange-dotted i).

Uni Watch Stirrup Club, Round Two: Robert Marshall’s UW Stirrup Club experiment was such a success that he’s decided to do it again. This month’s offering: the classic Bosox design (which looks as good on deck as it does at the plate).

Robert will once again place the order for the whole club and then send out the individual stirrups to the club members (no small task, as you can see from last month’s shipment). But he’s changed the ordering procedures slightly this time around — for full details, look here.

I don’t have any screen grabs of it, but Cliff Lee’s hat was missing the button on top last night. Did anyone else notice this? I wonder how long he’s been wearing that hat.

Man, the Iranian hardliners must just LOVE that their women are playing such an American sport!

That noise you hear eminating from New England is Sawx fans pinning that dreadful loss on Tek’s decision to pull his pant legs down.

Springfield, MAssachusetts unveiled their new D-League team last night: The Springfield Armor.

The name has historical significance. There’s an old armory in town that was a huge source of income during the early part of this century.

In an unrelated note, there’s a Smith and Wesson factory also in Springfield.

    Hi Paul,

The “A” on the helmet is not the same “A” in the logo. They switched to that logo around ’95 … ’96. That wonky “A” on the helmet has been there since ’72 … when it actually matched the “A” on the jersey.

    It’s cornfused me for years.

    Roger

I think the Nats’ fans are about to have an upgrade in their viewing experience now that Nyjer Morgan has been traded to them from Pittsburgh. Can’t wait to see the home red stirrups.

Amen to that. From a baseball standpoint, this could turn out to be a good trade for me Buccos…but from an aesthetic angle, it sucks to lose one of the only MLBers who doesn’t look like he’s wearing pajama bottoms on the field!

I think a lot of the news reports (and ESPN) got the Francoeur underwear story wrong – he doesn’t wear the turkey underwear during the game – he just wears them with his street clothes on the way to the ballpark.

    re: New Mexico’s jerseys…

I swear I have seen the wordmark font on another jersey. I want to say Air Force but I can’t find anything.

And those numbers aren’t too unusual. They are very similar to those on the link uniforms. Although on some of their numbers the Broncos have a bit more link. (For lack of a better term)

JimV19, you offered in comment #150 yesterday: “I’d almost welcome back those dreaded pillbox hats in return for a winning season.” regarding the Pirates’ trade of Nyjer Morgan.

You may be onto something. When I orignally wrote the piece for UW on the ’79 World Series, once I finished capping the games, I did some statistical analysis. I opted to not put this in the submission to Paul because the post was already lengthy enough, but here goes:

The Pirates were 654-581 in the mix-and-match era (1977-1984). The team had an average record of 81.75 wins and 72.625 loss per year and in that time they only suffered two losing seasons, one of which was the strike-shortened 1981.

On the other hand, from 1985-2008, the team is 1753-2063 for an average record of 73.04166667 wins and 85.95833333 losses. They only have had four winning seasons in that time period (1988 and the 90-92 run).

    There you have it!!!

Now, I must state that my analysis was about the mix-and-match unis. If you’re talking about the pillbox hats, you must remember they wore them, along with other NL teams, in 1976 (92-70 in Murtaugh’s last year, man, he would have looked ridiculous in some of those combos had he stayed around) and also, for two years after they ditched the mix-and-match (’85 and ’86) they wore them with the gray roads.

It’s funny because in the spirit of Paul’s Page 2 piece yesterday, by ’87 I was glad that they went back to a traditional crown because the pillbox look was quite dated. Now, I’d go back to it in a heartbeat.

Say what you will about poor management/ownership, players that didn’t perform, etc, etc, but I think there is a direct correlation with the demise of my ballclub and their ditching of my beloved mix-and-match and pillboxes!!!!

(Feel free to tell me what a geek I am and how I have too much time on my hands, etc, etc!)

Meant to post this up last week, but here’s another logo that can go into the set with hidden messages/designs: Portland State University. PSU.

Late last night (early this a.m.?) caught Orioles highlights and saw that Oriole catcher’s bright orange helmet for the first time.

Fun. But different. Makes him look like a giant Motrin tablet with legs.

You guys are seeing something I’m not seeing in regard to the A’s logos. I can see that the “s” is bigger on the caps than on the helmets, but the rest of what you are talking about just doesn’t come thru for me in the photos of the actual caps and helmets. Sorry.

    Fantastic line!

The discrepancy that has always bugged me is the different A the Braves use on their batting helmet:

    link

It is much fatter and the shape is completely different from the logo on the cap:

The Detroit missing i-dot got me thinking. And this is probably UniWatch 101 here, but:

Do MLB players only have one uniform each? I mean, for the budgets and salaries involved, if I were a player I would want 2-3 uniforms.

Heck, my two-person business has multiple shirts each for trade shows and the like.

Maybe Giambi’s old helmet decal is the version for steroid/HGH users with their bigger heads.
re: New Mexico’s jerseys…

And they’ve been around for a while. They look like this: link don’t they? I think some schools in the ’50s had those numbers as well.
I think that helmet Giambi wears might just be a real old helmet that the team has stored for years
A few things…

    1. Back in the day—talking the late ’50s, early ’60s now— there was not necessarily a technological way to perfectly reproduce a fabric pattern for a decal master. That meant someone had to recreate (meaning draw) it from a visual reference. The new version was rarely perfect.

    2. The visual aspect of the game (TV close ups, telephoto lenses) weren’t so critical. So, as in grenade throwing, close was good enough. Only the fans in the first few rows could see the difference.

    3. Also in them olden days, decals were pretty fragile. The narrower the area, the more trouble it was to apply, and the more likely it would be to peel or crack (less available area for bonding to the helmet). Hence, many teams’ helmet logos (especially if the original was “thin”) were “fatter.” Tigers, A’s, Reds, Indians, Phillies, Pirates come to mind. Sometimes the difference was subtle, sometimes really obvious.

That help clear up things at all?

    –Ricko

I didn’t mean to say Giambi’s helmet was from the ’50s. LOL

Should have quoted the comment re: the Braves’ big fat A, I suppose, explaining that some teams seem to continue the fatter versions just because they’ve been that way for so long it’s become a de facto tradition.

    —Ricko

Very cool to see Iranian women participating in softball but kinda of a bummer to see the 2006 all-star wearing men’s shoes. Is it me or do photos #3 and #4 look like she’s wearing clown shoes?

On the contrary, great work! I’d love a compromise: bring back the mix-and-match unis but keep the current lids.

Actually, this is my favorite look: link (favorite player, too). Probably because that was my first experience with baseball, but I always felt it was a good mix of modern and classic. But I’d love to see that hat in yellow-gold with the mix-and-matches.

At this point, though, they can switch to Penguins classic blue, or keep the Homestead Grays unis, or use a script Pitt logo (since Pitt isn’t using it), or wear the pillbox hats. I’m open to almost anything.

Hmmm, I like the script Pitt idea…
I also liked that look, especially the “mustard” hats. Something classy about the look. If memory serves, they went to a more yellow hat in the mid-70’s

No, they were quite mustard (as in poupon), indeed. When you dig around the SI Vault archives or watch vids of the W-S against the Orioles the first time (not ’79, or course) you see they were anything but yellow-gold. Most definitely a lot of green/brown in there.

We’d probably communicate it better if we called it “non-metallic old gold”. That’s more accurate than “mustard” (especially cuz there’s that really yellow mustard out there slathered all over hot dogs).

Spot on. Also, the first pillbox in ’76 was more mustard because it was made for the original double knits which were more mustard. (I agree that the replicas are too mustard).

On the flip side, when the mix-and-matches came on board, the yellow was much brighter than what is now sold as a throwback cap.

I’ve linked to this photo before, but check it out:

Shouldn’t the models mostly be the NM stars and/or senior players? But you felt the need for the “Hello, my name is…” sticker?
The first thing I noticed in that picture is that one guy is actually smiling. Imagine that… a football player in a posed pic that not trying to look angry.

If I may delve into the cup conversation, I don’t find it odd that football players don’t wear cups at all. In the six years of my playing football through junior high and high schools (late 80s/early 90s) I only heard of one guy in our school that ever attempt to wear a cup and it didn’t last one quarter. Too uncomfortable.

On the flipside, in my 20-plus years of playing baseball and softball, I don’t think I ever (and I mean EVER) went without a cup. This probably started when I first started catching and stuck with me to other positions in both sports. I’m almost positive that I was the only guy that even thought of wearing a cup on my old slowpitch team.

I think a lot of the football non-wearing has to do with the pants and change of material. Football pants today are like spandex whereas baseball (even pre-pajama days) offer a little more room to accomodate the equipment.

Maybe back in the day when Chuck Bednarik was roaming both sides of the field and the material was different, it was easier to wear a cup but now, i don’t think so.

Pitt did officially switch today from Adidas to Nike, but I have also heard that there will be no formal announcement until around July 14 because they are working on re-working the logos…

A few months ago, SI had a feature about the dangers of line drives hit back through the box. (I’m too lazy to find it in the Vault, sorry.) In the first or second paragraph, there was a mention of a cupless pitcher suffering (understatement of the year!) a lacerated testicle after taking a Manny Ramirez liner off his nuggets.

Once I was able to open my legs again, I walked down to the basement, found my cup in a crate of miscellaneous softball stuff and threw it in my batbag. I wore the cup for my next game — only while pitching, I tried to be discreet as I reached into my wad to pull the cup out in between innings — but have not worn it since. (Of course, the fact we’ve only played one game in the last seven weeks b/c of this horse$hit Northeast weather contributes to that, but I digress…)

    Didn’t play football.

I always wore a cup in the infield – I never got hit in the cup, but it gave me the confidence to go after ground balls without worrying. In the outfield, where getting a bad hop wasn’t an issue and where there was a lot more long runs. never wore one.

Jays red uniforms look great – the bright sunshine from the open Dome really makes them look sharp.

One aesthetic quibble – the uniform looks great with the blue and black in the Jays wordmark, but the hat is only red and white. The hat looks bland in comparison and would look way better if the hat logo also had the blue and black trim.

Almost forgot…thank you Robert for taking care of the stirrups. Got mine on Monday, just awesome. Can’t wait to bust them out at the next softball game. I’m even more excited about the Red Sox ‘rups, I think that will really go over well in my league here in Mass. These things are a beauty, so glad you stepped up on this.

Yeah, this was the argument I had with PG Pitt writer Paul Zeise. He was tired of hearing about the Pitt script from his emailers and always went of his way to tell us that the Pitt script is relatively new (early 70s).

I think he thinks that the fans that like it overstate its place in Pitt lore. He feels that we talk about it like it had been around since WWII.

What he failed to realize is, all tradition doesn’t have to be ancient. Look, the team won a national championship with that logo. Three of the greatest players in the program’s history (Dorsett, Hugh Green and Marino) wore it.

    That’s good enough for me.

I got the new Mozilla Firefox 3.5 the other day. I most use IE for UW. I remembered that Firefox had a text to image add on or option and I tried it again. It is great for UW as you can see all the pics without clicking on it.

Time for me to add Paul Zeise to my email list, as well as the Trib Pitt writer.

If I recall, wasn’t the whole reason they got away from the script because the university didn’t like the name Pitt and the obvious armpit or “the pits” references that come with it? Now that they’ve gone back to using it, there’s no reason to diss the script.

None. They will continue to wear baby blue at home, and red as an alternate.

you want a joke? it is my wednesday night umpire shift, 16″ stats league. i not only ump from 6:30 to 11:30, but i have to keep an accurate book, because i come home and plug the stats into this computer until 4am, every freaking wednesday, because damn it, their fielding percentages better be spot on while they have their morning joe. i also have to put on my sport writer hat, and write game reviews. it is nuts, i do it tuesday night too, but it isn’t as bad for some reason. link, sometimes they are funny, but the best reviews tend to be in moonlight graham games, it isn’t intentional, just happens. btw, the league does have one long time uw reader from nyc, wears stirrups. i hate wednesdays.

Always thought a version of the \’80s Blue Bombers would be a good look for the Panthers…although I suppose some would say looks too much like Faust-era Notre Dame.

    —Ricko
Yeah, this was the argument I had with PG Pitt writer Paul Zeise. He was tired of hearing about the Pitt script from his emailers and always went of his way to tell us that the Pitt script is relatively new (early 70s).

I think he thinks that the fans that like it overstate its place in Pitt lore. He feels that we talk about it like it had been around since WWII.

What he failed to realize is, all tradition doesn\’t have to be ancient. Look, the team won a national championship with that logo. Three of the greatest players in the program\’s history (Dorsett, Hugh Green and Marino) wore it.

    That\’s good enough for me.
Kek:

You are a person after my heart! I completely agree and I have been one of the emailers to Zeise about it. :) I understand that if Pitt wins, the fans will come more; but heck, why not give the fans the aesthetics they want?
Pardon my French but Zeise just doesn’t fucking get it. He thinks it’s mutually exclusive that a team must not be winning and that’s why they care about uniforms.

What this tool fails to realize is that Pitt could go 11-0 every year and people would still want the script back.

I don’t understand how a guy that covers so many games for the university can be so unaware of his surroundings.

And we wonder why newspapers are dying.

Regarding the reader thinking the new New Mexico font was familiar – Several schools used something close on their hoops unis in the early ’90s. I think New Mexico was one of the schools and Minnesota another. I want to write they were Converse program unis.

I have a question for anyone who might know… what is the deal with the dots on the top of teams helmets? I mean they are for the button on the hat, but why do some teams with a button that matches the hat have a dot on the helmet, and some teams have the button one color on the hat, but a different color on the helmet? dont know if there has been a post on this or not, couldn’t find one

Jeez. Sitting here waiting for the CFL webcast to download. Cheese hardens faster.

Any longer and I’ll just dig out some of my old VHS tapes from ’81 or ’82 and watch Dieter Brock and the Blue Bombers play John Hufnagel and the Roughriders.

I don’t have any screen grabs or pictures but A’s catcher Kurt Suzuki wore green and bright yellow catchers gear. He could have passed for an Oregon Duck.

Oh, now, don’t start that I’m dissing Oregon.
I love their colors (forest and yellow they are, btw) and that they take risks, uni-wise.

Sometimes with that risk-taking, though, they’re gonna hit it out of the park, sometimes they’ll swing and miss, and sometimes they’ll, um, fowl it off.
