Two interesting moments during last night’s Yanks/Braves game in Atlanta.
One of them came during the top of the 9th, when Mariano Rivera got a rare turn at bat — only the second regular-season plate appearance of his career, and only the fifth overall. So this was a very unusual chance to see him in a batting helmet.
But hey, what’s with the “91”? It was on the back of the helmet, too — apparently Rivera had to use Alfredo Aceves’s helmet. Granted, closers don’t bat very often, but are you really telling me that the spare-no-expense Yankees couldn’t be bothered to have a helmet for a Hall of Famer? Next you’re gonna tell me that Derek Jeter’s range isn’t what it used to be. (For the record, Rivera flied out, stranding three runners. Clutch performer my ass.)
The more interesting tidbit occurred in the bottom of the 8th, when Brian Bruney came in to pitch. Turns out he didn’t have the Yankee Stadium patch on the back of his cap. No biggie there — as we’ve previously noted, Jeter and Robinson Cano have also gone patch-free lately. But they’ve at least had the MLB logo on his cap, while Bruney did not have it last night.
I did a little checking and discovered that Bruney’s cap was also plain-backed during his two previous appearances, on June 19th and June 16th. His last appearance before that was on May 19th (he spent several weeks on the DL), and in that game he had the stadium patch. So his no-frills cap appears to be something he’s worn only during his latest stretch of activity.
Here’s the thing: Where can you even find an authentic Yankees cap without either the stadium patch of the MLB logo? Bruney might just have a collector’s item.
(Thanks to everyone who sent submitted info and screen shots, including Doug Keklak, Terrence O’Donohue, Jesse Ghiorzi, Chris Merce, Brian Harvey, and of course Phil.)

They also asked for his practice jersey, because he had only used ONE practice jersey his entire career as well. He said it was so patched and stitched up that it barely resembled a jersey any longer, and that the only way you knew it was purple was because the end that tucked into his pants was still a brighter purple, while the other parts of the jersey was a mismatch of lavender and white stitching. He went on to say that it’s currently hanging in his home and that he told Canton no, they couldn’t have it.” ”¦ Pawtucket and Durham recently held a Negro Leagues night, and Peter Romano took a bunch of photos. ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The 76ers didn’t quite revive their old logo exactly intact — they slightly altered the 6. ”¦ A few days ago I mentioned the Spaghetti Bowl. What tickled me most about Mo at bat wasn’t the helmet, it was the batting gloves. The sight of him standing in the on-deck circle with those big white Mickey Mouse gloves was fantastic.
Makes me wonder if perhaps he’s not distracted by the feel of the embroidery or the patch on the back of his head and has a special version of the cap for gameplay.
Makes me wonder if perhaps he’s not distracted by the feel of the embroidery or the patch on the back of his head and has a special version of the cap for gameplay.
Eh, whoops, that was wild sentence structure and I got lost in it… I meant “maybe he IS distracted by the embroidery…”
That ESPN style guide was fantastic. Thanks for that, Alan.
Mo’s “fly out” was a rope to center field…not too bad for only having 2 regular season at bats and his first since 2006
So I’m assuming Shaq will once again wear the #33 he wore in college now with the Cavs since Joe Smith currently wears #32, though he may retire, and #34 is retired for Austin Carr…
What tickled me most about Mo at bat wasn’t the helmet, it was the batting gloves. The sight of him standing in the on-deck circle with those big white Mickey Mouse gloves was fantastic.
i only caught a few seconds of the dugout sequence when the yanks were “prepping” mo to bat…i think melky gave him those gloves and “selected” aceves’ helmet for him, even placing it on his head…then, i don’t even think mo stood in the ODC, instead, hanging out on the top step of the dugout until he had to step in
and yeah, he did get a pretty good rip at the pitch on which he eventually lined to center
Is it just my imagination, or are the borders on Brian Bruney’s #38 expecially thick?
And I disagree that a helmet should have been prepared for Rivera. The guy almost never bats; it would be a waste of money to make a helmet for him if there are other people who wear the same size. Spending money on extraneous helmets would only increase the already-ridiculous ticket prices that the Yankees charge.
then, i don’t even think mo stood in the ODC, instead, hanging out on the top step of the dugout until he had to step in

As a Yankee fan, that was great television on a number of different levels.
* The looks on the faces in the dugout as the rally was extending, and the possibility (then realization) of Mo having to bat, spanning from “who, me?” (Mo) to “this should be great!” (Jeter, Sabathia) to “oh, $hit…” (Dave Eiland). All that levity was needed after their recent span of playing like equine excrement.
* Tony Pena — let’s get him to manage again today! — grabbing Mo on his way out of the dugout and telling him, “uhh, don’t swing.”
* Mo leaning against the wall behind the on deck circle like he was posing for a picture in Life Magazine, not even bothering to take any cuts.
* The laser he hit to center. I almost gagged when it came off the bat. Aside from A-Rod’s tiebreaking single, the hardest hit ball of the night.
Get the hint Mets…

re: Spaghetti Bowl: who knew Margaret Bourke-White did sports photography? This was not in the retrospective…
In that ESPN style guide, scroll down to page 13, look at #12… Paul should appreciate this.
I so wanted that ball to drop for a basehit for Rivera. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Oh, but he did make the Braves (including ex-Bucco Nate McLouth) just look plain silly in the bottom of the inning.
The point of having his own batting helmet or not is interesting. Brings up an interesting point of discussion: how have AL teams handled batting helmets for pitchers?
Do the teams play enough road interleague games to justify having individual helmets for the staring pitchers? Maybe. For middle relievers, set-up men and close? I would think not? (Do NL teams even supply their bullpen pitchers with helmets?)
I would think a few blank number helmets in the variety of sizes would suffice. If you had to go to bat, just grab a blank that fits and go with it.
I haven’t really paid attention to this during the Pirates’ interleague home games. I’ll try and observe tonight for the Indians and the next three days for the Royals’ series.
A better link of Mo at bat.
The Mets have actually been tracking on the scoreboard like that for a while. At least the past 4 seasons, from what I’ve noticed at games. Never thought to take a picture though.
And oh by the way, maybe Brian Bruney’s Stadium patch just fell off? I can understand Jeter and Cano wearing “old” hats with only the Dior Batter logo, but I have a hard time believing the 2009 caps have the patch superimposed over the Dior Batter, especially now that that logo is in 3D.
The only Yankee hats that would have no MLB logo or Inaugural Season logo on the back are bootleg ones. But even those do have the MLB logo except in a crude form (shape too big, tall, or wide or the threading is poor).
So Bruney either found a knock-off to wear or found a way to have the logo completely removed without leaving much evidence of its previous existence.
Well, I for one liked the candelas.

Has anyone seen a real tight shot of the backs of these hats? Could the logo have been blacked out by a sharpie? If so, I don’t think you’d be able to tell from those far shots.
Similar to the shot I sent of the Pirates’ pitching coach sporting the wrong hat Tuesday night. That alt cap the Pirates is so similar, with such a subtle white outline, I thought it would only be a matter of time before someone grabbed the wrong one!
Any Pittsburgh peeps (or anyone if you have Extra Innings) watch the Pirates last night. Thought it was really entertaining hearing Nyjer Morgan miked up. Not sure why I didn’t grab a shot, but his mic was visibile most of the evening.
Also, aside from his stirrups, he’s got other uni stuff going on: seems he’s having trouble keeping his jersey tucked in at various times during games as of late.
You know what’s sad, the Mets have designated their pinstripe uniforms as their primary home uniforms and the only worn them five times this year. FIVE! I’m surpised Bud Selig hasn’t done any thing about this (primary unis worn less than alternates), then again he has bigger fish to fry.
I’m surpised Bud Selig hasn’t done any thing about this (primary unis worn less than alternates), then again he has bigger fish to fry.
I’ll go with the latter.
i didn’t see the game, but these two eyewitness accounts got my attention:
* Mo leaning against the wall behind the on deck circle like he was posing for a picture in Life Magazine, not even bothering to take any cuts.
i don’t even think mo stood in the ODC, instead, hanging out on the top step of the dugout until he had to step in
according to the mlb umpire manual (procedures and interpretations) p. 6 2007 edition:
2.4 The next batter up must be in the on-deck circle, and this is the only player who should be there (i.e., not more than one player at a time).
When the catcher is the next batter, he shall have his shin guards off when he enters the on-deck circle.
No other player of the side at bat will be permitted on the field except the batter, base runners, and coaches.
just for information. personally i could care less. probably treated like the base coaches staying in their boxes.

Yes, Melky prepped Mo for his at bat, giving him some instruction for quite a while, handed him the gloves and even appeared to be giving him instruction at one point. And Mo got no where near the ODC-he basically leaned against the wall and didn’t take any warm up swings, which made the hard line out to center even more unlikely
Not sure that anyone but the most hard-core hockey uni geek or perhaps hockey guru teebz will care about this but…
from 1981-82 thru 1984-85, it is said that the Peguins wore yellow jerseys for Sunday home games only.
I had thought that the Pens wore yellows for all home games in 1981-82, whites for all homes in 1982-83 and back to yellows for all homes in 1983-84. I also think that the yellows were never worn in 1984-85 during the season, but only for preseason games. I decided to get off of my azz and dig into the archives of the Pittsburgh papers (Post-Gazette and Press) at the PA state library for at least 1981-82.
This is what I found:
Of the 40 home games, they wore yellow 14 times, they wore white 24 times, and there were 2 games (10/31 vs Buffalo and 1/2 vs Hartford) that neither paper had a photo from. The Pens had only 3 Sunday home games in 81/82 (2/21 Islanders, 3/7 Flames, 4/4 Islanders) and in 2 of those, they wore white.
So at least for 81/82, both theories (all yellow at home or yellow for Sundays only) were debunked. I will check out the Pens 82/83 season next week and will report accordingly.

From the ones I saw for sale at Yankee Stadium, the anniversary logo is heat-pressed on. Wouldn’t surprise me if a few fell off.
It happens a lot with other special patches, like those itty American flags and Series logos.

Nice recon work, Leon. I think Michael Kay even alluded to this rule as YES showed a wide shot of Mo from behind the third-base dugout.
Must be one of a number of rules we see un-enforced every day.
* Hitters standing a few feet (or even yards) away from the on-deck circle, closer to the catcher and umpire, in order to get a better view of the pitches coming in.
* Time to warm up upon entering a game limited to, I believe, 2:30. (Was Papelbon either warned or a ball called on the next batter for violating this recently?)
* Time between pitches.
* Joe Buck banned from ever calling another game.

the pins have been relegated to their “sunday” outfit (actually, it’s been that way for a while now)…
2-3 record yes, but not quite the whole story, because the mets scoreboard doesn’t keep track of which cap they’ve worn with the pins
to wit:
april 2009: 0-2 record, both with blue caps
may 2009: 2-0 record, one win in blue caps, one win with the black/blue abominations
june 2009: 0-1 record, blue caps
———
they have one sunday home game left this month (june 28) against the yankees, so they’ll undoubtedly wear the pins that day, hopefully with the blue cap (although they are 1-3 in that combination thus far)…

NOBODY here has a screen grab of the Detroit scoreboard from last night? Maybe JTH will come thru.
The Tigers put in a pitcher (44) and the scoreboard, instead of giving his name, only listed the word “Unknown”.
In Detroit, for a Tiger player!! :-))
I get the Yankee hatred. I really do. Are the Yanks’ new stadium logos embroidered onto the hats or sewn/glued-on patches? If it is the later, the patch might have fell off or he removed it.

I heard this once, and it may not be true, but here’s the story I heard.
Because the drivers are strapped into their cars using seatbelts, drivers would routinely wear “belts” that prevented the waist belt from cutting into their skin when sitting for long periods of time.
Again, it might be false, but that’s what I heard from a driver who races at a local, craphole track.

Wondered about that, too. Some kind of Italian throwback dueling belt? Honestly don’t know, but it does look like something out of a swashbuckler film. Or maybe it was for support while driving, a lumbar thing?

A friend of mine showed me his Red Sox “Turn Ahead the Clock” cap that he got back in 1999. The Sox never wore them because the game was rained out. I think I like it better than the very similar alt cap they’re wearing on Friday nights.

Maybe someone who’s tracking the Mets unis can figure this out, but ever since Paul had that link to the Mets uni survey, it feels like they’ve gone with blue hats at home a LOT. As in, almost exclusively with the snow-whites and pins.
I wonder if for once in their wretched lives, the Wilpons actually paid attention to the fans and have decided to go with blue caps at home (for the most part; they did go with black’blue last night) for most games…..?
go back up to post #32…and check the monthly records
i don’t believe they’re wearing blue more often than before, but they ARE wearing it during the weekdays, which is something they conspicuously avoided doing in april and part of may…in fact, i believe (would have to check), the first time they wore the blue caps during any weekday was may 11…prior to that, at home, it was always weekends only
so…yes, they’re wearing the blue a little more often but not often enough (which would be at a minimum, every home game)
Wow, Timmy B, that is some kick ass research. Thanks so much!
I had heard those scenarios (yellow on sunday, yellow on everyday, etc) but I recall there not being much of a rhyme or reason as to when they wore the yellow or white, similar to the Pirates of that era.
As someone that spends a lot of time in libraries doing research for projects I’m working on, I thank you VERY much for the contribution. I know the time constraints involved with doing this.
If that 1984-85 preseason only info is correct, then Mario never wore that jersey in a REGULAR SEASON game. funny, because that’s a pretty popular jersey at the arena, and if I was to buy a jersey that would probably be it.

The White Sox actually ARE wearing black with red trim 50’s style home uniforms today against the Dodgers. They seem to be white, that is, not having a cream colored tint. (Dodgers are in their regular road grays.) NNOB- big numbers. Awesome TV numbers. Helmets match. Number font is excellent. If they could just get stirrups with white and red stripes. Yes, I know the cost is high and only a handful of players wear them, but we’ll take the rest off their hands…

It figures those pricks would wear them for the day game of the series so all I get to see is that 120-second MLB.tv free preview.
I’d imagine that they just swapped out the decals on their existing helmets rather than create all new ones for this game. It’s cool that they actually went to the trouble of doing that.
I’m really not crazy about the TV numbers, so I don’t know about keeping them the rest of the season, but it would be nice to see them used as a home alt.

Not that it really makes everything 1959-esqe, but having them wear the ’59 uni’s for the day game does at least show them in the same light (get it?) as they were seen back in the WS.
Now with all that said, from a marketing standpoint you’d want them out there ASAP: two nights ago. That’s two nights of sales that you don’t get with the uniforms being debuted today.

They sure as hell link.

Come on guys the Yanks hat without a logo on the back is no big deal. Its simply a Yankees hat without the Inaugural patch. Whether it fell off/was never put on is besides the matter. Those Yanks hats with the patch I betcha dont come with the MLB logo because of the patch’s spot. It’s not a bootleg
About the Mets thing, I was at the June 9th game vs. the Phillies and I saw that too… that day the Mets wore the snow whites with the black cap, I believe.
