It Wasn’t Broke, but They Fixed It Anyway

MAEA103121119_1024x768.jpg

OK, so the Red Sox unveiled their new road and alternate uniforms yesterday, and boy howdy, the whole sports world would rather talk about CC Sabathia is all atwitter! Let’s take a look, element by element:

The new road jersey: Love the hanging socks sleeve patch (which I’m told was a very recent development that was added to the design just a few weeks ago), but man, that one-color lettering is sooooo drab. C’mon, gimme some red outlining or at least some red sleeve piping or something. Sox ownership reportedly got the idea for this design after a throwback game in 2007 when they wore early-’80s uniforms, but those were drab too. And what’s with the lettering? According to one report, “The lettering on all uniforms and logos will have the appearance of hand-cut felt, meant to look more traditional,” but I think the one-color road lettering looks more clown-ish — kinda rinky-dink, almost like a cheap minor league knockoff of the traditional two-color Sox lettering. Likewise, the one-color rear type is so plain compared to the version it’s replacing. A minor downgrade, I say. Meanwhile, two questions remain: (1) What undershirt color will be worn with the road grays — red or navy? The MLB Style Guide suggests that it will be red (note the collar), but undershirt specs can change, so this question will linger until next spring. And (2) Are the Sox really going with direct-sewn NOBs (instead of their usual nameplates), or did they just use some hastily heat-pressed NOBs for the unveiling?

The new road alternate jersey: Some teams just shouldn’t have alt jerseys, and the Sox are one of them. That said, if they have to have one, this is a whole lot better than this. Again, the jersey shown at the unveiling had direct-applied NOB lettering, but it’s not clear if that will be the case on the gamers.

The new home alternate jersey: How do you make the American League’s worst jersey even worse? Remove the placket and sleeve piping, so it looks even redder than before. Still can’t believe such a smart franchise can wear such a stupid jersey.

The new alternate cap: As a fashion cap, I love it. As a game cap, I think I like it, but I’m gonna need to see it on the field first. Just wish the logo didn’t look so much like a patch, but maybe it’s just the lighting or something.

The new primary logo: The hanging socks are now the team’s primary mark, with the baseball/bullseye logo relegated to secondary status. Plus they’ve made subtle changes to the latter mark — compare old (on the left) to new (on the right). But whatever, how will this even matter, aside from the icon that shows up in SportsCenter reports and a new set of stationery for everyone in the Bosox offices?

All in all: This was a good-looking team; it’s still a good-looking team, although maybe not quite as good on the road. Were any of these changes necessary? Nope, not a one. Is it good or is it stupid? A fair share of both.

‘Where’s Waldo?’ Update: When I went ballistic a few days ago regarding the idiotic Reebok promotion that’s being foisted upon the NHL Winter Classic, the prevailing sentiment in the comments section was, “Calm down, Paul, it’s not such a big deal. Unless it dictates the TV coverage of the game, that is.” And most people seemed to think that wouldn’t happen.

Now reader Peter Kaszczak has shed some light on that situation. He sent a note to Reebok, asking why Canadian residents weren’t eligible to enter the Winter Classic contest. Here’s what he got back:

Thank you for your question. The Reebok Lost Logo Challenge is a watch & win promotion, which was created in conjunction with NBC and the NHL. Through its design, the promotion relies heavily on NBC to prompt viewer participation and provide pertinent contest announcements. Since the NBC broadcast of the NHL Winter Classic is only available to U.S. viewers, it would be disservice to open it up to TV viewers outside of the U.S. who would not hear the pertinent broadcast announcements for this contest.

Reebok Corporate Communications

I rest my case.

““I’ve never seen a hockey player wearing a wristband,” says Kevin Zdancewicz. Me neither. ”

Hmmm…you’ll notice the Nike swoosh on that wrist band. Combined with the Reebok logo on the jersey, I’m surprised he didn’t just burst into flames right there on the ice.

Hockey players have been wearing wrist bands for years. I actually recall Wayne Gretzky wearing them. Perhaps it was to cover his wrists under those long cuffed gloves we wore.

To further illustrate the significance of Alberto Contador’s shoes, here’s a pic of him wearing the leader’s jerseys of the Vuelta (Gold), Tour (yellow) and Giro (Pink) on the cover of Velonews. link

Wrist bands for hockey serve two purposes.

    1) Intended for the actual use (wiping sweat off your face).

    2) You can buy some wristbands with an added plastic insert for added protection from slashing between your elbow/forearm pads and your gloves. Seeing lots of players like to wear shorter gloves for better wrist movement, it leaves an unprotected space that seems like it’s a magnet for sticks and pucks to hit. I used to wear these years ago but had to throw them out because they got so sweat socked no amount of washing would help. Since I threw them out, never got around to buying new ones because I bought elbow pads that have forearm protection that covers that area.

However, the armband shown in the pic looks like a regular wristband intended for only use #1. Wiping sweat off…

In regards to the Red Sox’s new jerseys

Road jersey – while I can agree that the one color tone of the Boston logo is drab, that and the socks sleeve logo make it somewhat more exciting than the old 80’s they based the design from. On the other hand (assuming NOB’s aren’t required) if they were going with navy blue only numbers, may as well drop the NOB

Alt hat – pretty much agree with Paul, as a fashion hat it’s nice, gotta see how it looks on the field

Alt jerseys – the road one looks too much like a BP jersey, but better that than something totally horrendous. As for the home one, just IMO, if they wore it the same way the Brewers or Padres were their alts it’d get annoying quick. But they seem to use their alts in a fairly stingy way. Seeing the red alts, say, 10-15 times year works with me. Agree though, losing the piping doesn’t help.

I like the hanging socks as a sleeve patch, but it looks way too big. Also, I think it would look a lot better if it had the baseball behind it (think link minus the outer ring of text). To me it looks really strange as the only red element on the jersey.

    From last of yesterday’s posts…
“How many MLB teams now DON’T wear alts on the road? With the O’s and Red Sox now having dark road jerseys available, are the Tigers and Yankees the last tradition-bound teams in the AL? Seems the NL has more, with the Reds, Dodgers, Phillies, Pirates, Cardinals and Giants sticking with traditional gray for all games.”

Good point, which perfectly illustrates the faulty logic of, “Let’s be unique like everyone else.”

I do like the gray roads. Nice update of the traditional look we knew and loved on, say, Frankie Malzone. And the red hanging socks on the shoulder add a needed shot of color. Not so much on a hat, though. Alt hat looks like something for Christmas. Just needs a little lettering, something like “Santa Comes to My House” (only zinging the hat, not the gray jersey).

I assume there’s no longer any piping on the road pants? And that road sleeves are navy? That begs the question, are they going back to navy sleeves at home, too, to complete the 50s/80s throwback feel?

And I imagine the socks remain solid red, even with the gray road. Navy sleeves never meant all navy socks before, why start now.

    —Ricko

Ok, As a Yankees Fan, I have to say somethings about the Red Sox jerseys.

The new roadies are a sight for sore eyes, they are a nod to the Teddy Ballgame years!

The rest of them are an embarrasment…

This is one of the founding memebers of the American League whose history is packed of legends and now they are going to be dressed on the field in these? Sorryful…

    Paul,

What do you mean, “What’s with the lettering?” on those new Sox jerseys. It’s an obvious return their more traditional early century type treatment (as exemplified in the new logo).

I say it’s far superior to the bland road type treatment that they’ve used (mostly on but some off) for the past quarter century. Far superior and has nice, clean look.

Same with the red alts — no blue piping is necessary, that just made it look tacky. Clean look that might be bright red, but we’ll assume they wear a clean white/gray pant … and not red pants … and it should look fine.

Can’t stand the Red Sox. Don’t even like their unis. But they’ve cleaned it up quite nicely with minor changes.

The real key is will they wear RED SOCKS (or stirrups)!

I easily see how the Red Sox red alt is easily the American Leagues worst jersey…by saying this though that means there is a worse jersey in your mind? What jersey is that? The Mets alt black?

I can’t think of a jersey I dislike more than the red alternative.

Paul, the article from Baseball Digest on uniform numbers is from 1990, not 1960. (I remember getting the magazine as a kid, and reading this same article! I was a Uni Watcher — or a uni number watcher — even then.)

Regarding the Red Sox’ uniform changes: is this the first time we’re seeing the “McAuliffe” Red Sox number font in one color only? It really does look different, and not necessarily for the better. I would have left the names off the backs, but at least the single layer means that the names aren’t so huge. On the road alternates, though — those immense names really, really look bad on long-named players like Manny Delcarmen. And Delcarmen is a pretty big guy; I shudder to imagine Dustin Pedroia’s back with this thing on!
that means there is a worse jersey in your mind? What jersey is that? The Mets alt black?
not speaking for paul here, but yes

As an anti-pipingist, I think the Sox alt. home jersey is improved by losing the piping. But I hated it before, and I hate it still. Storied Franchises don’t need colored jerseys.

I think the Red Sox road uniform is a great upgrade. Simple is better in my mind and this pretty much is a perfect example. I may be in the minority, but I would have rather seen the more simple lettering style like they did in the 2007 throwback game.

Forgive me for picking on you, Elena, but I don’t get the worship of gray among self-identified “traditionalists”. The only thing “traditional” about gray is that it’s what teams were wearing when baby boomers were kids. In the 1940s and earlier, you’d see link, and even back then, pants were pulled up higher so you got to see some color in the players’ socks.

Today, with socks invisible, a gray uniform is just a mass of dull, colorless insipidity. Otherwise I’d just as soon see them wear the red shirts on the road.

Did anyone else notice that Villanova had to go to the “blood” jersey in the second half against St. Joes last night?

Regarding the sox, change for the sake of change did not work here. the change to blue lettering on the road does not work, and the “hanging sox” on the sleeve are toooo big.

How about the purple colorado disaster? I’m guessing that’s what Paul had in mind.

I for one am glad the sox went back to solid navy on the road, but I would have rathered they not have NOB and I think the two sox clutter the sleeve.

As far as I know, the Red Sox abandon the use of their alternate jerseys in the playoffs. Here’s hoping that trend continues

Terry Bradshaw wore one of those high side-mounted Dungard masks in his his first couple of seasons, but in looking for that I found link..

And, for the record, here’s that same mask link

Overall, I’d say I’m mixed in my feelings on the Red Sox updated look. Overall, I like the road grays, especially the Socks on the sleeve. Like Ricko said, gives it some much needed color. What would make the jersey pop is just the slightest bit of red outlining on the letters and numbers. I don’t think it needs any sleeve or pants piping, but just that little bit more of red would be great.

The alts are kinda boring. They look like standard unis anyone could get for their team.

The cap looks great, but as a fashion cap like Paul said. If they wanted an alt cap, why did they not just go with the red crown/blue bill look from the 70s??

The new Red Sox away grays are damn near perfect, IMO. I love the felt-like lettering, and the hanging socks sleeve pactch is a nice touch, much like my favorite secondary logo on Earth, the White Sox diamond sock logo. The hat however just looks stupid and bush league, teams should have one hat only, and the normal B logo is much better. The hanging socks logo should be a secondary logo, not the primary that’s the biggest mistake here. The blue alternate is fine, in the same way many are, just fine, not all that annoying unless they wear it too much(I’m looking at your White Sox). The alt looked terribe already, and like Paul said, they go ahead and make it worse by removing the piping, and I’m a man that loves him some piping. Overall they took a cue from Eddie Izzard, they wanted to give the people a ….”sort of “heh” feeling, and I think they’ve done that quite well.”

While it’s true that teams of yesteryear wore dark-colored jerseys, it’s only been since the 1970s that teams have work a dark-colored jersey over white or gray pants. I’d be much more willing to accept dark-colored jerseys in baseball if they are paired with matching pants. So, there is really NOTHING traditional about colorful uniforms, unless they are paired with colorful pants.

As to why the wrist band, the first thing that popped into my mind was because of the new jerseys, there have been complaints about players hands/gloves getting saturated with the runoff sweat coming off the moister-resistant jerseys. Many of my teammates in college wore these, we called em slash guards. As mentioned it was a wrist band with plastic inside them to protect from some nifty stick work.

As a goalie I wear one on my glove hand as there is a small void in protection between the end of my chest protector sleeve and my glove. The slash guard fills in that void nicely.

    —Ricko
Nats don’t have a road alt. The red and blue alts are only for use at home.

My 2 cents worth of the BoSox jerseys:

New road unis: Great upgrade. The hanging socks are a great splash of color. With just the socks, I don’t think they’re too big. I was hoping for the plain sans-serif lettering, but I’m OK with the navy fancy type. I disagree that it looks minor league. They HAVE to wear navy undershirts with the road unis, just HAVE to. (And they should at home, too.

    Alt cap: OK

Alt road and home unis: Just a marketing ploy and are totally unnecessary.

The only correct observation I recall George Steinbrenner making was regarding the futuristic uniform promotion from the late ’90s. He said something like the Yankees ARE wearing their uniforms of the future. Same should go for the Red Sox.

Now all they need to do is return to the patriotic stirrups, but I suppose that would be asking too much.

i like the red sox road jersey. but why do teams need alternate jerseys at all?(i know, $$$) i can’t stand any of them. they look cheap.
I’m definitely buying the new Sox road jersey. Wonderful, it is.

    Mine, too.

While the alts are way too much (when your regular look is this good you don’t need alts), I rather like the new road uniforms – the sleeve patch saves it from being too plain.

As for the lettering, I prefer the way they appear in the mockups, with the first S broken across the placket. I know this increases the likelihood of seeing “BOSSTON”, but the off-center lettering is a worse alternative.

No mention of the Crossed Sox hat. I have owned one for some time. But for the alts (I prefer the 1990 to 2008 version of the road jersey) if they had to do them, they could have worn hats that had a different color scheme preferable used the Blue ‘B’ with a blue rim and a red hat (circa 1975). I like the crossed sox hat(I have owned one for some time), but I am in love with the 1975 hat. It is my usual hat of choice when I wear one.

I love the changes to Red Sox road uniforms provided that they use blue undershirts and return to the stipped socks.

The all red look s never looked right with the blue cap.

For the home uniforms I would either return to the blue undershirt and stripped socks or add a red bill to the cap. I would also put the logo on the sleeve (as well as the piping.

The red alts are hideous – If they insist on having them they should replace the lettering with the new secondary logo and bring the piping back.

I made this very claim yesterday, and I am still awaiting a response from Reebok on how they obtained information about NBC’s broadcasting signals.

I’m guessing Reebok’s marketing team is coming up with a way to tell me that they did “extensive research” on the subject, and were “unaware of the potential signals” being broadcast in Canada.

My favorite alt is the Cubs’ blue jersey, which I think they should wear on the road all the time.

If you include “throwback” styles, then the honor goes to Cleveland and their 1948 jerseys. Class and simplicity. Oakland’s green road jerseys are good too; long lasting and very distinctive, color-wise, in a sport where seemingly half the teams wear red. And — flame-retardant suit coming on here — speaking of red jerseys, I like the Angels’ red alternate. Garish, yes, but unlike anything any other team is wearing!

don’t think anyone noticed this, but the soxanddawgs site that paul linked to says the sox road alts will be worn with the WHITE pants.

    atrocious if true

I orginally thought the new Sox cap was a bit too much of a “fashion cap” for game play. However, when you picture that cap, dirtied and sweatstained..(like many of the Sox wear their hats)..it will give it a classic, old school look.

I also know a bunch of Sox fans will will buy these hats up like crazy. It will be a HUGE seller.

The 2-sock patch on the sleeve of the jersey would look better if there was no majestic logo just below it. I guess that goes without saying, but I felt like saying it.

Lastly- the new roadies remind me of the 1986 World Series….and that’s a good thing. Maybe that’s what my Mets need to win it all again. Switch the Sox roadies back to blue writing! METS in ’09!!!

Hockey players actually wear wristbands with plastic inside them when they have short cuffed gloves, although that wristband does not look like it is made like that.

Yeah, the NBC-is-only-available-to-US-viewers thing is gloriously ignorant (since I like the NBC HD feed and announcers far more than the CBC version – although with Bob Cole banished to second-tier status, that may change – I watch it more come playoff time), but kinda par for the course for Reebok these days. Someone didn’t do the research, much like their bullheaded insistence that the scooped-bottom jerseys don’t make the Rangers look goofy.

But… no real griping about the TM thing on the logo, since I’m not going to complain about the NHL protecting something fun that actually has some marketing legs.

    c) They may have felt that I am an uneducated/uninformed member of society (and Ironically, I work in television)

My intention was that maybe hearing directly from Reebok, it would end speculations and be 100% firm in their response, plus I thought it would be interesting to hear what they (the corporation) would have to say on this subject…and this is what they sent me (I honestly am surprised I got a response!)

I’m always puzzled when I see comments like this. OK, maybe the cap will sell, maybe it won’t — and so what? The cap’s sales potential has exactly ZERO relevance as to whether it’s a good Red Sox cap. If the Sox came out with a cap that said, “Yuck the Fankees,” I bet everyone would buy that too, but that wouldn’t mean it would be a good thing for them to wear on the field.

I’m not saying I don’t like the new alt cap; I’m just saying that commenting on a uni element’s sales potential is neither here nor there in terms of assessing the success of the design.

Also, I think it’s time the Sox dropped the red undershirts altogether and went back to navy. It would especially balance out the home uni’s better.

We didn’t hijack any Red Army satellites or Cold War satellites that I know of. But I could be wrong. ;o)

And listening to Doc Emrick call the game is always a pleasure since Canadians rarely get the opportunity to hear him. Since the game will be nationally-televised on every NBC affiliate, Reebok dropped the ball big-time.

Fair points, as usual, Paul. But to be clear, I wasn’t stating that the potential sales success of the new cap will mean it was a successful design. I was just stating that they would sell well (which I think they will). Having said that, I think the 2-sock cap (and the sleeve patch for that matter) is a direct response to that logo’s popularity amongst Sox fans.

Pierre McGuire has to be one of the most annoying hockey analyists out there. If I have to hear one more story that starts with “If I coached in the NHL…” I am going to lose it.

Pierre, you coached for three years, ONE year as a head coach with a winning percentage less than .400 you shouldn’t be giving coaching advice to anybody. Shut your yapper!

without a doubt the WORST alternates in MLB history are:
1 – the Mets All black (both home and way)
2 – the Mets snow white jersey when worn with two colored cap

and dont get me started on when the mets have those occasions of pinstripes and two colored cap!!

    How can the mets improve?
    Home: Pinstripes blue caps
    Away: Grey blue caps
    Alt: White Blue caps

Second worst alternates in my opinion….
Oakland A’s Black jersey with black caps.

    How they can improve?
Home: White with green/yellow brim cap
    Away: Road with Green cap
Alt: Green jersey with green cap

Just my two cents…you guys don’t have to agree.

Agreed. He’s annoying sometimes, but tactically he’s very good.

Of course, that offends the significant portion of hockey fans who think that hockey tactics shouldn’t be more complicated than “dump it in the corner, go and chase it”, but McGwire at least does a competent job of explaining the various types of system-based hockey that every modern NHL coach uses.

And, yeah, to figure out which Canadian city gets which US channel on their cable package, basically just draw a line due south and figure out which major market you hit first. So when I was at Queen’s, we got Syracuse, but in Toronto it’s Buffalo. There’s some weird ones, though; I recall reading that one of Edmonton’s feeds was from Boston, but that might have been a one-off.

Nevertheless, these are all part of our basic cable package. Makes it much easier on things come Olympic time – watch all the live events on CBC, then the taped highlights masquerading as live on NBC.

Although Canadian markets get US networks, those viewers are not included in any ratings, and therefore not accounted when advertisers buy time on those stations. It is kinda like the Yankee fan in California watching local NY commercials on YES on DirecTV. Completely irrelevant to them.
The claim Reebok makes–“Since the NBC broadcast of the NHL Winter Classic is only available to U.S. viewers”–is total BS. I live in New Brunswick and my cable system gets two different NBC affiliates. Last year’s Winter Classic (TM) (R) (C) (TM) (TM) (TM) (R) was available on NBC as well as CBC. Unless they’re going to start blacking-out NBC games up here, which they’ve never done before, that’s a total lie.

None whatsoever if you ask the NHL.

Personally, I think playing outdoors is a novel idea, but it needs to carry some sort of major rivalry yearly so that both fans and teams are pumped to play.

Having Atlanta play St. Louis wouldn’t draw the same crowd as a Boston-Montreal game, for example. Would Atl-StL sell out? Of course. But the rivalries are something that should be promoted in order to bring the casual fan a sense of the history of the game. Detroit and Chicago hold the record of meeting the most times in the regular season, making this game fairly historic.

They need to follow the lead of the Dodgers, who majorly upgraded their road grays by removing the white outline.

That brings up a point – why do any teams have that white outline on the gray jersey? Sure is a possibility.

As a one-time, once-a-year thing, the Winter Classic is a stroke of marketing genius. As long as they get the weather they want, of course. Last year was…perfect, including the throwbacks. I can’t tell you the last time I’d watched an entire hockey game prior to New Year’s Day. But that Pens-Sabres game…watched the whole thing, starting with pregame.

And, of course, they did get a phenomenal break with the snow and all. Was just plain great sports TV.

Be honest, now. As an “event” the NHL has never had–nationally speaking in the U.S.–anything like it. Hope it continues. It’s a good thing.

Uh, zero. Believe it or not, hockey was played on frozen ponds well before they decided to construct buildings to specifically house a sheet of ice to play hockey on. I’ve never understood this type of hostility towards hockey from (most american) detractors. I mean I am a hockey fan first and foremost and pay very little attention to any other sport but I still respect them and their wonderful idiosyncrasies. I’ll watch an entire season of hockey but I’ll also watch the superbowl, world series, world cup, tour de france, etc. not only because sport is exciting but each sport offers something unique which you can enjoy. I’m just saying, give hockey a chance. For that matter, give cricket a chance or jai alai a chance. Ask some questions and learn some of the rules and history and see if you can’t discover something.

aha, yes? Not sure what you mean but if you mean professional hockey I can\’t say if they played outdoors. But I can say that in the early years of professional hockey and the NHL there were junior hockey teams and minor hockey teams, as well as non-organized, which certainly played outdoors.

I don’t necessarily think one way’s better than the other. There are plenty of teams with the white border that look good (including the Yankees), if you ask me.

Probably more have the white border than don’t. Pretty sure 8 of the 11 teams in the two Central divisions (all but Cardinals, Twins, Astros) have them.

Regarding a potential NY “winter classic”, as mentioned before… the N.Y-Boston thing doesn’t have the same intensity as in baseball. Bruins-Rangers has intensity, but in an “original 6, we’re supposed to be rivals” kind of way. Not in a “Potvin sucks… Islanders fans want to eat our children” kind of way.

A Rangers-Islanders game on January 1st, in Central Park or Yankee Stadium in front of 100,000 people…that would be something. Sure I’m N.Y. biased, but it is what it fucking is :)

That’s the interesting dilemma the NHL faces.

Right now, what they have on their hands is the closest thing to a Rose Bowl (as a TV attraction in the States) that they’re likely to have for a long time to come. The viewership—and the buzz—for last year’s Winter Classic was something.

It really is a tough question. Personally, I think with the NHL’s popularity problem, a few more outdoor games would be a good thing. Maybe 1 outdoor game a month (sans October and April for a few reasons). I remember reading that logistically (and financially) it takes a lot of effort…so more outdoor games than that would probably have no chance.

There would be worry for a “watered down” effect, but I think the outdoor games work on a few different levels. 5 great matchups, outdoors, should be no problem for the NHL to work up. November and March, head to Canada!

    Damn.

I’m off to hit the rack. First good, solid uniwatching session for me, in far too long. It’s been a pleasure.

    G’night gentlemen.

    link

Man, I can’t stop thinking about those late 70s ChiSox uniforms when I look at the new road uniforms. Damn similar (if not exact) font.

Beg to differ with you on the lettering on the Red Sox road uniforms. To say that the single color navy on the Red Sox road’s is not traditional is a little short sighted. They wore single color navy “Boston” on their roads in 1900, 1901, 1903-1907, 1938-1968, and 1979-1989. That’s 49 years of single color navy lettering on the Red Sox road uniform since 1900. Pretty traditional if you ask me.

    1) While totally unnecessary, the new Sox unis look great (except the alts… I don’t get the whole let’s-wear-our-batting-practice-unis-during-the-real-game thing).

And that’s coming from a Yankees fan.

    2) Chara is probably wearing the wrist band for sweat.

As mentioned above, many players wear slash guards, but the bands Z is wearing don’t look like they have the plastic protectors.

    3) I noticed that hockey and lacrosse elbow pads were compared earlier:
Almost all hockey elbow pads have roughly the same amount of protection, covering mid-forearm to mid-bicep. Some are longer or shorter, but that’s average.

In lacrosse, most guys I know wear pads tailored to their position.

For instance, when I played defense my freshman year, I went out and brought elbow pads that were basically plastic shells that fit over my elbow caps. I was the one doing the smacking and didn’t need much protection, so I got the bare minimum required in the rule book. When my coach moved me to attack last year, I got elbow pads that covered my entire arm, from wrist to upper-bicep, because I was getting slashed a lot. Most guys I know who play midi have about average elbow pads, that are pretty close to the same fit as hockey elbow pads.

    4) I think more than one Winter Classic would kind of ruin it.

When you look at the NHL, people rarely even talk about individual playoff games, much less regular season. Games seem to blend together when you talk to the average fan.

Now, if you look at the NFL, it’s the exact opposite. Games almost never run together in a fan’s head, because the match-ups are win or go home. The Super Bowl is just that – THE Super Bowl. It’s not “Game 4 of the 2008 Super Bowl Finals”, it’s just THE Super Bowl.

This is the equivalent for the NHL, at least from a television perspective. It’s one game that everyone will remember. It’s on a different day. It’s in a different stadium. It’s in different sweaters. It’s got a completely different look and feel from every other day of the regular season, preseason, training camps, or playoffs.

If you have more than one a year, it loses that special feeling. I’m not even a fan of the Hawks or Wings, but as a hockey fan, I’ll damn well be watching, because it only happens once a year.

What is the point of a road alternate jersey anyway (well, other than more sales on Yawkey Way)? It seems rather un-Red Soxlike (or should we expect this in the Trio/Theo era). The alt-hat is nice, but strays from the traditional nature of the Red Sox Uniforms (alt or not). I don’t know what to think about the new aways. They have a retro look which is nice but I am worried about the lack of red, which might look odd with red socks (especially knicker style).
bottom line though, no need for change.

Paul, I read your column religiously, and I rspect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

When I saw the sox had changed their road uniforms, I winced. I braced myself for the worst. But they’re beautiful! So subtle! I’ve felt the Yanks were somehow better than us for sticking with the simple black-on-gray while we ditched it for red on gray (UGLY). I love the lettering and I love that it’s one color (surely you noticed the Yanks went to a white outline…sad).

I like it when a team looks humble on the road. Isn’t that how it oughta be?

look at Clinton Portis’ cleats he wore agaist the Giants in 2007
alot of players on the Redskins are moving over to wearing SOCCER cleats. Like Carlos Rogers, and Fred Smoot. link
