Thunderstruck Awestruck Dumbstruck

Picture 1.png

Well, that was certainly worth all the buildup, right? I’ll have more to say about this over on the Page 2 index page this morning (you can find it here), but for now I’ll quote a reaction I saw on the Chris Creamer board: “That logo is so bad, I think we need to give the whole state back to the Indians, steal it back, and start fresh.” Amen, brother.

My annual NFL season-preview column is also up today — look here.

Chat Reminder: I’ll be doing a live web chat today at 3pm eastern. To participate, go here.

Raffle Reminder: I’m still raffling off a $100 SoccerPro.com gift card. For details, look here.

If the suit fits”¦: We all know NFL coaches wear Reebok gear on the field, except for the occasional game when Mike Nolan or Jack Del Rio wears a suit. But did you know NFL coaches are also given free clothing to wear off the field? It’s true: Take a minute to read this and this (both of which were sent my way by reader Tom Turner).

As you can see, those articles refer to “the NFL Coaches Club,” a term I’d never heard of before. So I checked with an NFL contact, who responded thusly: “The Coaches Club has been around since early 1990s…. It allows us to use coaches collectively in marketing. For example, the coaches are in the monthly NFL Shop catalogs, etc. They also work with other sponsors.”

As you may also have noticed, the articles state that the Coaches Club “includes 31 of the 32 NFL coaches.” The lone holdout? Guess. I suppose he wouldn’t have much use for a Joseph Abboud suit anyway.

Uni Watch News Ticker: My camera’s been on the fritz, so I hadn’t been able to take pics of an amazing item I scored during last month’s Binghamton road trip: I scored this for $3.99 at the Salvation Army. It’s really big, and at first I thought it was a tablecloth. But as soon as I saw this tag, I knew it was part of this bedroom set from the old Sears catalog. Check out all the old logos and helmet icons from back in the daynice. Also, they used a sort of default mustard tone for any colors close to yellow, and which created some new color combos — look at the Steelers logo at the top of this shot, e.g., and I really like this Packers treatment. Not sure what I’m gonna do with this, but maaaaaaaybe I’ll raffle it off later in the fall. For now I’m happy just knowing that it’s sitting over there in the living room. ”¦ Sarah Palin was presented with a Penguins jersey the other day (with thanks to Ryan Connelly). ”¦ Matt Powers recently attended some Cape Cod League ballgames and made some observations. Among them: The Orleans Cardinals have a cleat sponsor, Ringor, and have the option to wear one of three styles provided, as seen here, here, and here. Base coaches wore flapless helmets, just like in the pros. Also: “The Cape League all-stars played an exhibition game against the U.S. Military all-star team this year,” writes Matt. “If you thought San Diego and the White Sox were over the top with their camouflage uniforms, take a look at this.” ”¦ Rare shot here of Cal Ripken Jr. in the O’s futuristic jersey from 1999. ”¦ This is pretty fascinating. ”¦ College officiating note from Doug Steffenson, who writes: “Just spoke with a Big Ten football referee friend and discussed changes to their uniforms for 2008. Apparently, there’s a new sleeve patch (possibly on the left side) with initials of some sort or another. I couldn’t find any photos during a quick search of the web. From my meeting today, I understand that the patch is a part of a plan to move officials away from their conference affiliation and more towards a national organization.” I haven’t found any photos of this either, but maybe someone else has..? ”¦ Here’s something every team should sell: Russian nesting dolls! (Great find by Chris Bisbee.) ”¦ Here’s a shot of Darrell Evans wearing the Tigers’ road uni with a home helmet (good spot by Jason Taylor). ”¦ The Orlando Magic’s home page features an animation based on their jersey history (with thanks to Benjamin Mayberry). ”¦ Oh. My. Fucking. God. (let’s just nominate Eric Borer for sainthood and get it over with). ”¦ Awesome video clip here of high school football players “earning” their helmet decals. Even better, the decals are devil horns (with thanks to Steve Johnston). ”¦ Brian Erni notes that Lastings Milledge was wearing Austin Kearns’s wristband last night, and that the Pedro porthole is spreading. ”¦ What the hell is that logo on Chase Utley’s undershirt sleeve? ”¦ This could never happen in America. I hope. ”¦ Eric Buzard recently took a tour of Rexall Place in Edmonton, where he learned an interesting tidbit about the Oilers’ 1984-85 championship banner: “The team wanted to raise the division/conference championship banners immediately, but the company supplying them didn’t have any ‘5’s to put on the banner. So, they turned a 2 upside-down so that the banners could be raised in time. When the Oilers recently decided to replace the banners, they opted to use upside-down 2s for the 1984-85 banners, just like on the originals!” There’s a video about the banners here. ”¦ “Branding I can get behind,” says Minna H., and I heartily agree. ”¦ Why get a Uni Watch membership card based on the UGA helmet when you can have a VW Bug based on the same concept? It’s even got its own web site (which you can see here; all this courtesy of Brent Hardman). ”¦ Here’s a doozy: A high school football team has agreed to wear its road jersey at home, just so their opponent can showcase their flashy new Nike home jerseys on ESPN. Both teams wear Nike, but the road team has a special Nike contract — hence the switcheroo. And remember, this is high school. Outrageous details here (courtesy of Mike Edgerly).

Cripes, that logo sucks. Don’t the NBA powers that be read Uni Watch? They could’ve gotten something better from ANY of the uni contest finalists!

The Georgia car is great…I recently was on the Palisades Interstate Parkway and was next to, albeit briefly, a 2006 White Mustang Cobra that was customized with grill to bumper Navy pinstripes, Interlocking NY on both doors, and the Tophat logo on the hood!
Here’s a shot of Darrell Evans wearing the Tigers’ road uni link
don’t the tigers wear their home caps and helmets in spring training now (regardless of whether they are home or away)? is this what they were doing back then too?

re: Darrell Evans, the picture is probably from Spring Training. The Tigers don’t pass out road hats or helmets until Opening Day, and they haven’t for as long as I can remember.

This was from a local Texas Rangers blog by Jamey Newberg

“According to local reports, Rangers equipment manager Zack Minasian says the
team will increase the red in their uniform look in 2009, and included could
be a solid red alternate jersey and red hat.”

As a former High School hockey player, that just shocks me to no end. HS teams having sponser contracts. Seems wrong to me. Don’t know if this is normal, but I’ve never heard of it in MI.

I finally figured it out, if basketball in OKC fails the logo and name can transfer to any city that offers a new arena and a willing fan base (Baltimore Thunder, Birmingham Thunder, Pittsburgh Thunder, Austin Thunder, San Diego Thunder, Columbus Thunder). Marketing genius by the NBA. In all honesty this is the best they could do? Very disappointing. I am also tired of colors having to be explained (the sunset and the flag, really?)

That thing on Chase Utley’s sleeve is a the logo for a local Philadelphia company called Sweat It Out. It produces a lot of quality performance wear, and a lot of Philadelphia athletes wear the stuff.

First … that OKC logo/name sucks. They talk about ties with OK weather (why not ThunderBOLTS?!)and Native American symbolism (why not ThunderBIRDS!?), yet choose this generic BS.

Second … you can get US-sports related nesting dolls (matryoshki) at pretty much any tourist spot in Moscow: soccer and hockey are the biggest; but also NFL, MLB, NBA, and even college football like you show. They’re made strictly for the tourists; and are therefor grotesquely overpriced.

“The team wanted to raise the division/conference championship banners immediately, but the company supplying them didn’t have any ‘5’s to put on the banner. To me, this is very cool. They kept it consistant, even when they had the chance to make it right. Plus they never replaced the whole banner when they had the time. Good call, that’s the banner you raised in front of the fans, that’s the banner that should stay. Classy move by EDM.

    Stay Classy Edmonton!!

Paul did you perhaps mean high school football team the article mentions Nikes entry into college football uniforms and besides being early for the high school hockey season the choice to outfit elite hockey teams in Florida seems an odd choice over teams in Mass. or Michigan

I’m actually all for this, if it means free, quality uniforms. I wore some pretty crappy stuff in high school. I didn’t play hockey, but I did play JV basketball in 2001 in short-shorts from the early 90s. I was a power forward built more like Barkley than Garnett, and you can bet the crowd wished Nike had given me some better shorts too.

That’s really sad. Sure the kids probably love it for having such nice free equipment to use, but what kind of lesson id this teaching them? “Hey kids, throw tradition out the window so that our opponents can get some air-tiem for their new (insert supplier here) uniforms. Ok?” I’ve never heard of it in Illinois either. But then again, our local conference sucks, it wouldn’t surprise me at one of the big Chicago football powerhouses. During my high school days most wore unis from a local supplier that just used templates straight out of the big company catalogs. We wore Wilson I believe, as I wasn’t a football player myself.

Another cool thing EDM does with banners is their Stanley Cup banners have just the year they won, and a picture of someone from that year holding the Cup. Very unique, gives you a look into the past of who was on the team and quick uni history too!!

What the hell has happened with the NBA? The league has been on the decline, and its biggest ‘stars’ Kobe and LeBron don’t exactly captivate the public. And NOW they can’t even create an identity that a fan could respect? Bobcats. Wizards. Grizzlies. THUNDER?

if I owned a team, I’d want a kick-ass brand that would appeal to everyone.

Paul, it’s HS Football, not Hockey, sorry I wasn’t clearer in my e-mail.

Also thanks (I think) for the WFMU link, now I’ve got “Bear Down Chicago Bears” stuck in my head!

Not sure if anyone else saw it last night, but around ESPN 2 had a high school football game on. I believe it was Mater Dei vs. Carson. Anyway, the Mater Dei team has a red helmet with three white stripes going from front to back(somewhat like Michigan/Princeton minus the horn looking shape at the front of the helmet). The only problem was that there was no uniformity as to the angles the stripes were on each helmet. I don’t have any pictures/screengrabs, but it wasn’t uncommon to have two Mater Dei players standing next to each other with two completely different looking helmets due to the stripes being way off. Anyone else catch that?

My mom has that NFL sheet you were talking about as well. She’s using it as a cover for the glider on the front porch. I’m not sure what happened to the other parts, though.

Random question here, but what are the two vertical stripes on the old school Lions logo supposed to represent? Are they supposed to mimic helmet stripes? Is there some symbolism I’m missing?

That NFL bedsheet is sweet. Lay on that baby while listening to your favorite team’s fight song, woo hoo!!!

They have made matryoshki dolls for several MLB teams. I’ve seen them in MLB catalogs, and as promotions at games. Usually quite hideous and unrecognizable as to who they are supposed to be.

I knew it was part of this bedroom set from the old Sears catalog.

(sigh) I had those sheets on my bed when I was eight years old.

If anyone’s interested I created a group on the Peter King challenge on SI.com. Group name: Uni Watch Password: purple

It’s for how many wins they get every season….

One other little problem with OKC…how do you draw a picture of Thunder? Right off the bat they can’t even have a logo of any sort that actually represents their team name.

Re: Nesting dolls (a/k/a matryoshkas). Apparantly, Coopersburg Sports of PA manufactured nesting dolls for MLB back in 2003. Here’s a link for a Pat Burrell model on ebay link

In some cases it looked like the white tape wasn’t trimmed very well in the back and hung over the edge of the helmet. Kinda looked like they were using white adhesive tape.

Was an “automotive-look” thing, like a sidebody or trunk nameplate. Pretty simplified version for those sheets. More detailed actual logo was drawn in a pen-and-ink comics book fashion without the vertical bars being solid, using a bit of “chrome” look. Think Silver Surver, only not so much.

Was their “corporate” logo. Letterhead, etc. Never got anywhere near the uniforms as I recall. Like the ball-carrying Cardinal in front of St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, or the orginal Cowboy on a horse.

Of course! I should have figured that out! :)

Paul, the college officials patch is supposed to say CFO (College Football Officials). I believe it is a white patch with black lettering in a football shaped design with the letters within. I seem to remember seeing a picture of it but can’t seem to locate it on the web. It is supposed to go over the right breast with an American flag (outlined in white) going over the heart.

Apparently everyone down south cheered for the Washington Redskins for decades, until the Dallas Cowboys came around (thus the rivalry between the two teams). The OKC logo is a real shame, to the point that the ‘generic’ logo used in the off season looks better. This whole transition has appeared and been treated like a rush job, with this logo unveiling just adding an emblem to this teams situation.

The colors, while generic, I can respect, but the lack of the actual name of the city in primary logo. What marketing depeartment did this come out of, because they should lose their senority for letting this go unchecked. I will admit with SOME adjustments this could be used as a secondary/tertiary logo.

I hope the administration realizes this screw up and at least makes it up with a fan derived logo that is more creative.

Does anyone remember the NFL toybox? I had one when I was a kid (we’re talking 1970’s), and it was similar to that bedspread: Wall-to-wall old-school NFL logos. Really good quality; I remember me and my two sisters climbing up on it, sitting on it, jumping on it, and not even a crack. They don’t make stuff like that anymore. Unfortunately, when we moved out of our old house that little piece of history was lost forever………

I happened to catch some of the high school game on ESPN last night, and right before second half kickoff the announcers mentioned how the Mater Dei players don’t recieve the helmets stripes until after training camp in a ceremony.

They are given the stripes, to take home, and put on themselves, so there is the reason for the inconsistency.

thunder is the sound made by lightning…depending on the nature of the lightning and distance of the listener, it can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble…the sudden increase in pressure and temperature from lightning produces rapid expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning…in turn, this expansion of air creates a sonic shock wave which produces the sound of thunder…

I had the complete bedroom set, including the curtains. I used to spend hours as a kid trying to recreate the logos, and the team fonts, with colored pencils on old typing paper I would pilfer from my dad’s home office.

Knowing my parents, those old sheets and curtains are probably still in a box in their attic.

I think the thwart the Great Satan of the singular team name, they should have called the team the “Oklahoma City Thunders.” Then they could hook that in with a Johnny Thunders reference, and change the logo to a syringe penetrating a basketball.

Perhaps this has been discussed already, but I was under the impression that Nolan and Del Rio’s sideline suits were “designed” by Reebok.

Yeah, I knew that. All that sleeping through science really proved to be beneficial for me, huh?

My missus is from Oklahoma so I take an passing interest in sports there, and though I feel greatly for Seattle upon losing their team (teams moving really is the worst aspect of American sports) I am pleased that OK has a professional team to cheer. I was eagerly anticipating seeing the logo and uniform since the name has been known for aeons, but it really wasn’t worth it. I’m stunned that an NBA team can have that as their principle identifying mark, it’s bland, generic and does nothing to convey an image of the team or the city in which they play.

I’m crossing the pond and going to OKC for Thanksgiving to meet the missus’ parents and figured I’d pick up some NBA merchandise, but I don’t want anything with that on and I’ll save my coin for the Rams Pro-shop when I head to St. Louis.

The mascot’s name, that’s crap too, why not call it Thor? To call it the same name as the team is preposterous, can you imagine mascots called Sun, Net and Knick? Ridiculous.

Change the logo, and please make a decent fist of the uniforms.

Incidentally, the ice hockey team from my city in the UK used to be the Thunder, they had this logo…

Here’s an even better question….What happened to their colors being Black & Gold? Or was that a whole ploy to throw us all off?

I wish I could see these in action but we never will…( I don’t care for the Cyclones logo in the last one but the uniform design is very clean)

I’m still looking but I remember that logo was used on Ford (or Mercury) cars in the 1970’s. Searches are tough because you come up with all the more obvious references and that was relitivly obscure. Like Ricko stated, it was on (with the stripes) tailights, floor mats, etc.

Filthy, I believe the real mascot issue is that it’s not the Thunder’s mascot who’s named Thunder. The Golden State Warriors’ mascot is named Thunder. At least for now.

On the topic of Bennett’s Crayola Masterpiece… why? The NBA should be embarrassed to have something that looks like that even considered as a logo, let alone actually in use. They’d do better with the black and gray basketball logo with “OKLAHOMA CITY” typed across it that they used as a placeholder.

I gotta agree with Phil here.

I’ve gone over the bad promotional hockey uniforms ad nauseum on my blog. There’s no excuse for stupidity when it comes to promoting an event. Nor is there any excuse for not extending some class to the promotion by putting a team’s marketing and design department 100% behind the project so that the team looks respectable.

If you want to do the cause some justice, do it right or don’t do it at all.

I was looking online for a picture of my old 1973 era NHL bedspread and curtains (from Simpson Sears – as we Canadians called them back then) – I still have them – will have to take a pic when I’m home tonight.

Alternate unis on display Sept. 10

Waiting to get a look at the Hurricanes’ new alternate uniforms? Next Wednesday will be your first chance.

The team said today that the new uniforms would be on display at a 12:30 p.m. news conference at the RBC Center. Fans are invited to attend and get their first glimpse of the alternate unis the Canes will wear in 15 home games this season – the first time against the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 13.

Center Eric Staal, defenseman Tim Gleason and goalie Cam Ward will serve as the “models.” The uniforms will not go on sale until Sept. 21 at the Caniac Carnival, the team’s season kickoff.

The doors will open at noon and fans are asked to use the entrance next to The Eye.

Here’s an observation: The new pant striping now mirrors the numbering on the away jerseys. When the away jerseys had the aqua numbers, they matched the pant striping. But when they switched, that symmetry was lost. Maybe the Jaguars decided that they wanted a uniform [no pun intended] look.

Hopefully that will signal a move towards the white/white look and away from the unitard look they’ve been using the last few years with the black pants…

Then again, why should the NBA try to make something authentic and cool-looking when it’s been proven time and time again that people will buy any crap as long as it’s officially from the team?

It’s the same with teams that sell out time and time again even when they have been losing for years–there’s no incentive to do better.

What always bothered me about camo baseball uniforms (aside from the fact that they’re ugly) is that most of them are using a pattern that’s now on the way out, three color desert (the coffee stains.) That’s why it’s absolutely inexplicable to see the military field a team wearing a pattern that was phased out over a decade ago, six color desert (chocolate chips.)

They are always very good about having commerative sets too… championships – although sometimes the guys inside are funny choices and not so informed. That was my favorite part – seeing WHO they put inside! I went back in Feb 2007 and was still able to get a Texas National Champions set. Got my dad a Gordon Nascar Cup Champion set too. While I don’t think they are that pricey (maybe Dave got his on the Arbat instead of the big flea market), the prices were a good bit higher than ten years ago!

So, I loved the note about the Russian nesting dolls. In 2001, my father and I took a European trip and went through Budapest. While we were there, I picked up a set of Oakland A’s nesting dolls for myself, and a set of Oakland Raiders nesting dolls for a friend (and a set of South Park dolls for another friend). The sports ones were both great because they picked the most random players from both teams (most had been cut or traded within a year). I wish I had pictures to upload, but not right now – maybe later.

Lil Phil,Teebez, Minna – Fair enough point, I’ll still have a soft spot but valid arguement nonetheless.

Drat, I thought for sure the OKC Thunder would have Lightning in their logo; thus making me want to rip my hair out. But they decided to go with a logo that would be more fitting for a OKC Basketball League, rather than an individual team. Unless the team was called “The Oklahoma City Basketballs”

FIFTEEN TIMES!!! That’s 37% of the home dates. Let’s change the title from “alternate” to “secondary”.

My two brothers and I used to fight over who got the “football sheets” every Saturday. I’m proud to say I won, and now my 8 yr old son is enjoying them.

When he saw the mustard-colored Vikings, he asked why they weren’t purple. I told him to ask Mr. Lukas.

I think that, for whatever reason (maybe legit), we have come to connote “alternate” with “very rarely worn,” while “secondary” seems to me to be something you’d wear more often than that. but that’s just me.

With Reebok pushing the NHL who will be pushing the teams to wear the “alternate” jerseys as much as possible for additional revenue streams, this designation will be a moot point.

I guarantee you that most of the new alternates will be worn as many times as Carolina’s, maybe more.

    no

a bad uni is a bad uni, regardless of the cause
I gotta agree with Phil here.

I’ve gone over the bad promotional hockey uniforms ad nauseum on my blog. There’s no excuse for stupidity when it comes to promoting an event. Nor is there any excuse for not extending some class to the promotion by putting a team’s marketing and design department 100% behind the project so that the team looks respectable.

If you want to do the cause some justice, do it right or don’t do it at all.
If you are supporting a cause you better make your uni as good as possible or your event will be remembered for a crappy uni and not the event it was planned for, well for us uni people anyways.
Hopefully that will signal a move towards the white/white look and away from the unitard look they’ve been using the last few years with the black pants…
Hopefully not. The White/White/Dark helmet look is without a doubt the most boring loo in football.

I agree with you. Just sayin’ that’s where some people’s differentiation between the two terms comes from. Alternate, to me, means tertiary. YMMV.

Wow, awesome find on the NFL linen. I would love to have my old set back from when I was a kid.

That logo…yeah, that’s pretty lame. I did one for a fake baseball team that looking back turned out a lot more interesting than *that* (and I wasn’t even happy with it at the time…of course the colors weren’t my doing).

Last part is the key. I don’t think the general public knows or cares.

Seriously, we’re the ones (and I’m not even one) who get up in arms when someone doesn’t have a stripe right on a throwback or doesn’t take the time to retro-ize their batting helmets as well.

It is, of course, one’s right to be as persnickety as one wants to when it comes to everything and anything in one’s life. Just don’t be surprised when a lot of folks look at you and say “Would you just shut up and enjoy the game? You’re really being a pain in the ass.”

maybe for football (american football that is), alt. means worn a “max” of 2x (by rule)…but i think, at least for baseball…”alternate” connotes the phillies pinstripe-free uni, the indians excellent NNOB, the blue jays ‘home/away’ blues, the brew-crew’s yount-esque pins, even the mets & chisox “black” (ugh) uni-tops…despite that they are worn much more than “rarely”…

in this instance, i would say that “alt” and “secondary” are interchangeable…now… a “THROWBACK” to me is a one-off which (for all intents and purposes) exactly (where practicable) replicates a uni worn in a specific season…a “RETRO” is, to me, some thing like the phils or indians wear…which evokes stylistic elements from years past, but isn’t a true throwback

as far as hockey sweaters…imo defer to teebz :o) on that…i’d say they’re synonymous (alt & sec)

hoops? meh…WTF cares really, what they wear? but the celts “black-laced away” would be a “secondary” whereas their gold-tinged st. patty’s day would be more of an alt…although to my mind you could use the two interchangeably

They already confirmed it will be a black jersey in mid-August. The prevailing thought is that the hurricane flag will be on the logo in front of a stylized triangle to represent the major markets in Carolina.

The pants and socks will match the rest of the uniform, and give the Hurricanes a “unitard” look much like the Ducks wear.

    indeed…here’s what i found:

CAROLINA: The Hurricanes will introduce a black third jersey, with red and white trim – different than their customary red home uniform with the black and white trim. Each arm will sport red and white angular stripes. The bottom of the jersey will feature a narrow white stripe and a thicker red one. In between, will be 10 white stars. The club’s red logo on the uniform front is placed within a white triangle, presumably to honor the famed Research Triangle that dominates the Raleigh-Durham area.

I hope they adopt these new pants for home and away. I personally hate stripeless football pants in the NFL. In college they work, sometimes, but only with an equally plain jersey, like Notre Dame etc. Another part of the reason is the lack of high socks/tights on most college teams. I for the life of me can’t figure out why anyone would enjoy the unitard. Also I don’t mind some monochrome looks, in this case the white on white. Some times it works, some times it doesn’t, it’s gotta be taken case by case.

I believe you’re right about the serif looking longer, Bill, but it is more of an optical illusion due to the font used. It should remain consistent, but I’m searching for pictures as you read this.

    Paul,
I was the one that made the last comment on your chat about sports being a business, citing that your attack of decisions being made based on merchandising is unfair. I claimed also that money drives everything, and I firmly believe I’m right, however I should’ve added “in business”. In our personal lives, making more money shouldn’t be #1 priority. Family and overall happiness are more important, and I’ve learned that, believe me.

But what is SO wrong about merchandising in sports? Please, all I ask is that you defend your side of it instead of responding with a snarky ‘good luck’ comment to end the chat. I work for a small company, and the only thing that really matters, in the end, is how much revenue we generate. Now, thats not to say that employee happiness and customer satisfaction are unimportant, but money is the bottom line in nearly every single decision we make.

If these teams don’t generate revenue, they don’t exist. It’s a business, at all levels of sport (but I can admit that it’s a bit sad to see colleges so driven by $$$, especially given how much admission costs have raised). The sooner we all admit that, the happier we’ll all be. Sports have always been big business, are big business, and always will be.

The club’s red logo on the uniform front is placed within a white triangle, presumably to honor the famed Research Triangle that dominates the Raleigh-Durham area.

teebz…do you have a mock up for this?
As a hurricanes fan, I can certainly point you towards one…
    link

No full body pics, but I actually like the jersey. And Black is a team color.

By the way, No NHL team has ever had more then one color pants since The kings did home/away pants in the 70s. They just cost too much, have to be broken in, ect. Different socks I can pretty much guarantee though.

I have always like the Hurricanes look more with contrasting pants- so the white set- but the black should do well for that too.

I had virtually the same bedroom set! I loved it when I was a kid. Mine was slightly newer. I know that there were different logos for the Broncos, Bills and Eagles. I’m certain of this because I still have one of the pillow cases. I use it regularly, much to my girlfriend’s delight. Still looks great too. Basically, I received something NFL related from the Sears catalogue for Christmas every year from the time I was four until junior high started.

By the way, I should point out that those kings pants were a big mistake. Yellow pants with Yellow jerseys at home, Purple With purple away. And both had matching socks.

Early 70’s I think, perhaps someone could find a picture or two?

That and the Capitals white pants (lasted half a season) are the most interesting things about hockey pants.

I will have to take a snap of my carved Santas tonight(yes – I bought several, thought they would be good Christmas decor for the office). When I gave the Longhorn matryoshka (nesting dolls) to my dad, I remember he was very dissappointed about one guy missing – can’t remember who (maybe the white guy).

I actually have TWO Texas Tech sets and typically they would put the current QB on the outside and All-Americans on the inside. I think the uni representations were pretty good, as far as stripes and color trim.
Not quite a true Fisherman jersey. The logo is of the current Isles’ design, so this was from the following season. They had also fixed the serifs that season so that they weren’t so “Captain Hook”. LOL

Oh joy!!! Maybe I’ll get to see Armwood’s fancy new jerseys when they play my school! Oh, damn. We don’t play them. I guess I’ll have to go to the game against Plant… Oh wait, we don’t play them either. Damn Bloomingdale for not scheduling tougher opponents! Hold on, we actually want to win more than 2 games this year… Huzzah for a weaker schedule!

Regarding the nesting dolls, they’re available in the US. I got some Buccos ones in Juneau, Alaska when I was up there in June. No pictures because I’m too lazy to host, but they had a lot of NCAA football, NBA, NFL, and MLB teams at the House of Russia. I meant to post after I got home, but I never did. They run about $55. Definitely worth it for the fan who has (almost) everything.

People who have these jerseys can wear them year after year because they stand the test of time. And each year, these teams are near the top of the merchandise sales.

No, it’s not. The serifs are far different on the #4’s. There was no special edition jersey either. The Islanders scrapped the Fisherman logo, and replaced it with the classic logo. They kept the “wave” jersey, and used the NYI-logoed jerseys for the last 2/3rds of the season due to the outrage that the Fisherman caused on Long Island.

Originally, the NYI-logoed jerseys were supposed to alternates, but the team scrapped the Fisherman because it had sold all of 10 jerseys in 1+ seasons. Islanders fans love their logo, apparently.

The Isles themselves could not do that. They wanted to but thy did not notify in time, so the “alternate”.

Yes, they could do that. All NYI had to do wear their “new alternates” as their preferred jersey. As someone stated above, money drives business… so wearing a jersey that more fans loved would make good business sense.

As for the differences, I stated above that it might be an optical illusion, but there is a clear difference between the #4 on link and the #4 on link. However, I just spoke to a guy from All Canadian Emblem (who does a lot of NHL contract work for jersey customization), and he said it’s most likely a human error in the way that font is cut.

His exact words? “Cutting those Islanders numbers are the equivalent to cutting hair with a lawnmover – an absolute nightmare, and good luck on ever getting them to look identical.”

I guess we can blame the Isles for that, too. LOL

That logo on the field is worse than the one on the jersey. Notice on the field that it’s as big as the NFL shield- leaving one to think Upshaw was as bigas the game. Wasn’t he (merely)the head of the union after his (superb) playing career?

I almost wish the GU63 logo was purple..just so I could stand outside by door here in Northern Ca and listen for the Lukas scream.

Of course, it does look bad on players without other patches. You can decide which is the dog and which is the tail, and who is wagging whom.

Also on the patch–everyone has said that it would be worn on the chest all season, but it would be so much better as a helmet sticker, like they have done for Sean Taylor and other players. I have a hunch that it will be moved to the helmet next week.

Finally, is the NFL logo always at midfield at the Meadowlands? At first I thought that the NFL took over the center logo to emphasize it’s opening night, but then I realized that the Giants and Jets shared the stadium…

    That’s lame.

Does anyone else think the NOBs on some of the Giants jerseys seem a little wider/thicker? I’m thinking Burress and a couple of the D-linemen. Looks like those fake jerseys from the ESPY Awards.

Not sure if it’s been posted, but with Chad Ocho Cinco’s nameplate being confirmed, I thought to myself, where would Ocho Cinco not be allowed to be Ocho Cinco?

Two teams currently have #85 retired: the Lions (for Chuck Hughes) and the Rams (for Jack Youngblood). It’ll be fun if he finds himself in Detroit or St. Louis, No-cho Cinco territory.

Agreed on everything you said about the patch.

I can’t remember the last time a Giants or Jets logo was at midfield (I’m a fan of both, but only 20 yo). I few years ago, they started having the NFL logo there after having no logo at all, I think.

    1. Jason Taylor is wearing Air Jordan III Player Exclusive cleats with a TD molded plate.

    2. Chris Cooley does in fact have a modified Riddell Revolution facemask, as someone alertly pointed out last week!

I have quite a few myself (sports and other – seems to be a collection that got waaaaay out of hand) and added a new twist when I went back. Team decorated Santas – (of which I must be the ONLY person to have bought them – because I can not find one single picture of them on the internet)!
Yeah, the Izmailovsky Park flea market is the way to go for Russian souvenirs. Anyplace downtown is just a tourist trap. I only bought one (in St. Petersburg) for my sister – a ‘regular’ one – but I know quite a few folks who have football related matryoshki. Forgot about the NASCAR ones; which are obviously for the tourists because nobody gives a damn about NASCAR there!

LOL
Sorry, not buying the comparison based on those photos. The whole thing about those numbers is that they are cut differently whether they are the first digit or second, or single number. If I saw one with the 4 in the same position, then you’ve got something. But hey, you don’t owe me anything.
Also, if the fisherman logo was ditched after the first year (1995-96), why does this fisherman jersey have a 1996-97 anniversary patch?

im wont to agree with you, but teebz’ knows his shit…the isles actually had the “fisherman uni” for 3 seasons…1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98…but by 1997-98, the fisherman was removed permanently…so, it’s possible the “41” is from that season (and knowing teebz, likely)

they had all those ownership problems back then (remember john spano???)…but in 1998 they had a throwback to the original jersey, which the nhl allowed them to use permanently the following season

go link and click those three years in the 1990’s to see the progression

Sorry didn’t see your comment that they ditched the fisherman mid year. In any case, the Fisher #41 may not be the best example of a Isles gamer since Mr. Fisher didn’t actually play for the club (at least in the regular season). The lettering looks like it may not be quite right.

Major decal malfunction tonight in the high school game that was on FSN Pittsburgh.

The team in the photo is Seneca VAlley and they have a decal similar to the spear that Florida State uses.

There was either some head-cracking going on or some poor adhesive on that decal (or a combination of both).

No argument there! You know I root for a Missouri baseball team and as such, I’ve adopted their motto.

I’ve been out for a couple hours so apologies if this has been said, but here are my Redskins takes tonight:

    1. They sucked.

    2. Very disapponted they wore the burgundy over white socks with the burgundy pants. All pre-season they wore the right ones (white w/burgundy/yellow stripes.

    3. Was pleased to see our new punter wearing the un-cuffed sleeves. Collins will be gone soon and I would like to see at least one guy wearing what was worn regularly for 25 or so years. This is my stirrup issue with the Skins.

    4. Portis’ shoes made me think there were penalty flags thrown on his plays.
