Hello there.
One week, one wedding, two days of record-breaking Portland heat (one of them spent in a jacket and tie — ugh), one Uni Watch party, one astonishingly large cinnamon roll, one visit to a vacuum cleaner museum and another to a kite museum, too many hours spent shopping at various thrift and vintage shops (resulting in one very odd 1960s clock-radio-lamp purchase), many beers, one afternoon spent at a National Volcanic Monument, way too many failed attempts to pronounce “McMenamins” without stuttering, one one visit to a reader’s home, and one giant frying pan later, I’m back.
But more on all that tomorrow. Today we’ve got serious uniform news to discuss, because the Hornets unveiled their new design yesterday. Here’s the scoop:
• The team’s basic colors — blue, purple, and gold, have all been tweaked slightly. Largely irrelevant.
• The primary logo has been tweaked as well, going from this to this. I miss the white gloves, but otherwise this looks like a clear upgrade for both the illo and the typography.
• A new secondary logo has been introduced. Man, does that say, “AAA baseball” or what? What a waste. (You can see various treatments of this logo, the new primary logo, and the “fleur de bee” logo here).
• In a nod to the franchise’s original Charlotte-era design, design, the uniforms are now pinstriped — you know, because basketball players are short and need to accentuate the vertical. I’m generally fond of the new typography (compare to this) and not fond at all of the neckline and ass-crack logo positioning (it’s practically a rule now that every new design has to have these). Still if the overall effect ends up looking more or less like this NBA 2K9 leak, I’d say the world will keep on spinning. A masterpiece? No. But reasonably palatable? Yeah. (Additional details on all this can be found here.)
While we’re at it: As most of you know by now, the Timberwolves have a new design as well. Now, if you were redoing this team’s design, what’s the first thing you’d address? The illegible number font, right? The good news is that they’ve got a new typeface; the bad news is that it’s only marginally better than the last one. On the plus side, shortening the home wordmark to “Wolves” seems like a good move; on the other hand, there’s more rear-logo silliness, and the tree motif on the side panel and shorts seems forced. And c’mon, the collar just looks embarrassing.
But here’s a new wrinkle: The league invited me to participate in a conference call regarding the Minnesota uniforms on Monday. I was busy traveling but asked if they could provide me with a transcript of the call, which they did. It features some predictably rote recitations of corporate marketingspeak but also includes a fair amount of interesting inside info — much meatier than I’d expected. So I’ve posted it here. It’s lengthy, but I think you’ll find it worthwhile.
Uni Watch News Ticker: I’m late getting to this, but Mark Mihalik‘s excellent PlayerExclusive.com footwear site has some cool team recaps, plus he’s been building an excellent footwear gallery. The site is so smartly designed that even a non-footwear-obsessive like myself can dig it. Highly recommended. ”¦ Latest awesome old baseball photo from Dave Eskenazi shows the 1935 Dayton Ducks. ”¦ “I’ve been up in Wisconsin at the Chiefs’ training camp at UW-River Falls,” writes Jason Gomez. “Jon McGraw and Dustin Colquitt gave away their shoes along with autographs, which led to the players signing autographs in their socks — which turned out to be NBA socks. Also, the Chiefs have Trek bikes to get around in — pretty cool.” ”¦ Not uni-related, but fascinating all the same (thanks, Kirsten). ”¦ Wondering why some countries’ Olympic uniforms have the country names printed in English and others in foreign languages? Look here. ”¦ With college football about to start and college hoops not far behind, this is a good time to mention the excellent Pollspeak site, which covers everything related to college poll rankings. ”¦ Major NOB possibilities for the Mets, who may soon have three Reyeses on the 25-man roster. … Nyjer Morgan is back in the bigs for Pittsburgh, which means one more pair of stirrups on the diamond. Thanks to Chris Hilf for the tip, and to Bryan for the blurry screen grab. … Here’s a follow-up from Tuesday’s Air Force PT note in the Ticker, from an anonymous contributor: “I read the Ticker posting about the Air Force PT uniform, and I can say wholeheartedly that it’s true. I normally wear a large, but have it up to an XXL in order to have something that reaches mid-thigh and doesn’t feel like spandex. Either way, it reminded me of a story that might interest you. I work on the E-4, an airborne command post that the Secretary of Defense uses for overseas trips. Well, former Secretary Rumsfeld was known for wearing an Army PT coat as his ‘casual’ wear in-flight. But on a flight right after the Air Force’s new PT gear came out, a member of our crew walked up to Mr. Rumsfeld with an Air Force PT coat and asked him to wear it, because ‘we are the ones that take you where you need to go.’ From then on, he wore that coat.” Many thanks for the contribution.
I have to admit I have to give props for the ingenuity of the “fleur de bee” logo
Does anyone else feel that MIN having ‘Wolves’ on their unis intstead of Timberwolves is the first step to offically changing their name to The Minnesota Wolves? Almost like they are using it as a feeler gauge to see if people like it. Doesn’t have the right flow if you ask me.
As for NO unis, is there a different material for the inner legs of the shorts? By the pic there seems to be no pinstripes, wondering if it’s a different material, or if they are just lazy and didn’t put stripes on them. Also, don’t like how they made the purple line up on the shorts and the top, going to look like hell once the players start moving around, not going to line up anymore…

I kinda doubt they’re thinking of shortening the nickname. “‘Wolves” is part of the verbal shorthand around here (sorta like “‘Wings” in Detroit). I imagine it’s something akin to when Cleveland had “CAVS” on their unis for a while.
I just noticed, make that Wolves silhouette on the left solid black, add cowboy boots and you get, um…Dale Evans.
oh, never mind, don’t get me started.

I second the disapproval of all that silly neck- and waist-area logos on today’s basketball uniforms. Particularly on the neck — dump that logo and keep the name and number as the focus of attention!
Sometimes I think the leagues are just using these pesky little logos to soften us up for future soccer-like advertising logos that will swamp such insignificant details such as the team name and player’s number.
I actually like the rear neckline logos on some teams, but the ones on the shorts are unacceptable. At the risk of sounding sexist, printing/branding on the ass belongs on Victoria’s Secret shorts, not men’s basketball uniforms.
Dayton Ducks jersey….I….must….get one!!!!
That might be one of my favorite old flannels that includes a logo. 1940-41 Pirates is probably still my fave.
…oh, and good looking out to whoever recommended watching the Colbert Report interview with the author of the OBD book. It was hilarious. Colbert at his best and the author seemed to play along. I’m sure the video is on Comedy Central’s site, but I can’t view at work.

Or “Sonics” for the Sea… oh wait.
Why did they put New Orleans on the home uniforms as well?
Re: Hornets uniforms.
I’m sorry to see that classic three-stripe of purple/gold/green go. The Jazz had it for years. (Notre Dame had a similiar version, only with blue/gold/green, in the 1970s. It looks good.) Not long after Katrina, I saw a pro-New Orleans bumper sticker that had a purple/gold/green stripe combination and realized that that was New Orleans, in a nutshell. Sorry to see it go on the unis.
I sure hope No. 08, Mr. Abcdefg, has a good season…

I love the new Minnesota uniforms, the neckline bugs me a little but not as much as the one in New Orleans. I especially like the tree on the side of the shorts. My only suggestion would be that for the tree on the jersey side that they would have started the green at the bottom of the jersey and brought it up further towards the armpit. Not all the way, though. Probably about 3 or 4 inches short of where it comes to now. My only real problem with the uniforms is ditching “Timberwolves” in favor of “Wolves.” link was always my favorite Minn. uniform.
In New Orleans I hate the pinstripe stemming from the weird v-neckline. Looks awkward.

By the way, can I just tell you that it puts the biggest smile on my face every time I google for images of Kevin Garnett and the majority of them are him in a link.
Huh. I actually like the fleur-de-lis treatment of the little Hornet and I like the tree motif on the ‘Wolves’ jerseys and shorts. I’m normally a simplicity guy, but those are subtle, unique and interesting to me.
YMMV.
I love the pop/coke/soda map. I spent way too much time studying it. I had no idea that the St. Louis and Chicago areas were soda people.

Well, it’s teal, you’re right, a holdover from the Hornets’ days in Charlotte. But it’s kissin’ cousin of green.
New logo for Champions League Hockey has just been presented.
Wow, NOLA took a good thing … and ruined it.
They had some sharp, basic, colorful uniforms before. And now? They nod toward the ridiculosity of early 90s Charlotte? Why not bring back Grandmama Johnson to model them?
I give the new NOLA logo suite a B+/A-.
I give the new uniforms a flat C. They suck royal.

The New NO uni’s are an absolute disaster IMO. Tehy had a very underated uni to begin with, see old Devil Rays, and ruined it. Why try to copy the old, terrible Charlotte unis. I’m so dissappointed with this all around. Only redeeming quality is use of the logo.

I grew up in St. Louis, and it is most assuredly a soda city. I now live in Kansas City, and its weird hearing everyone call it pop.
I went to a small Missouri college that was mostly equidistant from St. Louis and Kansas City, and each city has about 40% of the student body. The soda/pop debate was so evenly split that you could use it to divide any group of students into two equal(ish) sized groups. Need to split a class in two for some kind of debate? Use soda/pop. Need to determine teams for a pickup basketball game? Use soda/pop. Its quite strange how often that worked. . . .
Glad to see my hometeam Hornets at the top of the page. I think the revamp is good and bad. I love that we are keeping the “Fluer de BEE,” but I agree that the NOLA logo is very Triple – A baseball. It just looks hokey.
I wish they had kept the uni design they had, but incorporated the typeface they have now. And if I have seen the last of the yellow alts, I will be very happy.
And teal is NOT green. I must agree.
purple “teal” and gold do not shout New Orleans
damn creamer boards

O.K., the teals have it. It’s not green. But two questions:
1. Why would you change uniforms after the most successful season in franchise history (spanning two cities)?
2. Why not get rid of the Charlotte-era teal and just go with a true New Orleans look — green, gold, and purple?

AMEN. I live in Indiana, and I always have this discussion. We (I) call all of the flavored non alcoholic carbonated beverages COKE. Then you have to designate what “COKE” you want. Rather it be the original, cherry, or perhaps your are feeling feisty and a sprite is what you are looking for. but it is all categorized under the name “COKE”. I’m glad they made note of it in the graph, usually people think I’m crazy when I tell them that it is all referred to as COKE

It’s because Coke is the master brand. And when I hear someone call a soft drink “pop”, it makes me want to punch them in the face.

I loved their old logo.

I also really like the new Hornets uniforms, overall.
How is it that they can fit “New Orleans” on a jersey but not “Timberwolves?” I know it looked kinda smushed before, but that was because of the font. I hate it when teams shorten their names on their jerseys. Teams should pick a name that fits on a jersey. That would be a good rule of thumb. Your jersey is that main advertisement for your team and when people see the shortened name they may not know the real name. I remember the first time I heard Supersonics I didn’t know what they were talking about because they always had just Sonics on their jerseys. I think the Diamondbacks are the worst with Dbacks. Just wrong in so many ways. Of course I’m mainly referring to the teams established in the modern era. I can understand why the Kickerbockers just went with Knicks.

I guess, but you’d have to agree that it doesn’t make any sense. I wouldn’t say I drive a Toyota, then explain that it’s a Chrysler. I wouldn’t say, lets go play my Playstation 2, then specify that I really had an XBox. I wouldn’t say, “Hey those are nice Nikes!”, then specify that Ne Balance Nikes are my favorites. It just mind-bogglingly-weird. Yes, so weird I had to create a new word for it. If you’re wondering we call it pop here in Rockford, IL. And outside fo Rockford and Chicago everyone in Illinois calls it soda. How bout what to call water fountains(the kind you drink out of). Our friends in Wisconsin like to call them bubblers, weird.

Depends on what part of the country you’re standing in, I’m afraid. Not sure there are rights and wrongs when discussing local colloquialisms.

Now, let me ask this: How many times have any of said, “I need a kleenex” or “I’ll xerox it so I have a copy” ?
Been around even longer and you remember the “Fridge” (for Frigidaire, not refrigerator) or “Get the hoover and clean up this carpet” or, even stranger, “I’ll be there as soon as I finish hoovering the living room.”
And this one (not heard so much these days), here in Minnesota we used to call rubber bands “rubberbinders”. Anyone heard that one anywhere else?

As for NO unis, is there a different material for the inner legs of the shorts? To put two posts in perspective, when Phil mentioned thsi “they’ll even correct you in a restaurant here if you say “i want a coke” they’ll say “all we have is pepsi” and you tell them to fck off” and now you mentioned the alternate names for a sub, I remembered this gem from my youth.
My family was visiting relatives in Philly and went to a SUBway. I went up to order and the girl says this, “What kind of hoagie do ya want?” I am at a F’n Subway and they’re calling them hoagies for crying out loud! Then they keep the pop machine behind the counter and I’m all of about 5 years old and I can’t see what kind they have, so I say, “What kind of pop do you have?” And the girl gives the blankest stare I’ve ever seen, and says, “We’ve got soda.” To which I respond, yeah, that’s the same thing.” And again she stares blankly. Now I understand that its called different things geographically, but seriously, how had this girl never heard it called pop before? It blew my 5 year old mind. And to my amazment the hoagie and soada I got tasted similar to the sub and pop I was used to.

Regarding the Hornets:
New typography is a huge improvement. And I love the Fleur de Bee logo on the shorts. But…
they totally screwed up by adding the pinstripes, which didn’t look good in Charlotte, either. And the colors are another missed opportunity. This would have been the perfect time to go with purple/green/yellow (NO is one of very few cities that are so closely associated with a color scheme…you’d think they’d capitalize on that), and yet they chose…whatever that blue is. Stupid.
question for all you foreigners and world travelers…(i notice this every time im abroad…which is somewhat rare, but it has occurred)…
is the US the only nation that actually puts ice (or more than say, one or two cubes) in a cold beverage?

noticed this in england and canada too
is ice that much of an anathema elsewhere? is it ‘too expensive’? this one i just don’t get
and the foreigners here are the same way…was in $tarbux the other day and some british chick ordered some iced coffee drink with “light ice” (and it was about half full of cubes)…to which she, quite snarkily i might said, “that’s NOT light ice…light ice is one or two cubes”…(of course, it didn’t help that the counter teen even more attitudinally replied…”it does here in AMERIKA”)
(i would have told the british chick to check for spit in her ‘new, light-iced’ beverage…but well…she kind of deserved it)

Not to be a Subway supporter too much here, as its actually not one of my favorite places to go by a long shot. Well, I grew up in Saskatchewan, and now live in Alberta, and most places I go to put ice in drinks. When I worked at both Wendy’s and Arby’s, we filled the cups half way with ice before adding the drink. The only place that doesn’t is A&W, and I just noticed recently they have a little notice printed on their cups. They say they don’t use ice because the drink is supposed to come out of the fountain at the appropriate temperature, and ice just waters it down.
Speaking of localized expressions, the big one for Saskatchewan is “bunnyhug”. As far as I know, we’re the only place in the world that calls a hoodie a bunnyhug. To me, bunnyhug is completely natural and hoodie sounds wrong.
The other one is runners, for sneakers. I think this is a Western Canadaian expression.
If you want a real soda/pop/coke/whatever debate, spend some time in Washington, DC. I lived in DC for a few years while my now-wife was in med school at G-Town. DC is a town of transplants and emigrants and is the biggest hodge-podge of cultures outside of NYC. I’m a NorCal (soda) kid and had friends from Pittsburgh (pop), Atlanta (coke, of course), Washington state (pop), Sri Lanka (soda), and South Africa (tonic!). This debate came up every time we went out to lunch. Clearly the only correct term is soda, but this mish-mash would never admit it.

Ah, heck with that. I grew up in “pop” country (NW Indiana), but now live in LA, which is definitely a “soda” area. Been here 15 years, but still call it pop, and still get weird looks from people when I do. I refuse to change, mostly because I know I’m right. :)
Shortly after I’d first moved here, though, I did have one co-worker mishear me and think I’d asked where the “pot machine” was…that was an amusing experience.

Soda is NaCO3, the chemical compound that makes Akla-Seltzer fizzy (I don’t think they still use to carbonate modern bubbly drinks, but could be mistaken). What does pop have to do with carbonated beverages?
That could still be gold in between the black and teal stripes, but it’s really really hard to tell.

In Ghana if you want a soda/pop/Coke you’ve got to order a “mineral.”
As I typed that last post, it occurred to me that the name probably came from combining “soda” (fizzy water) and “lollipop” (sweet and sticky goodness) to create “soda pop” (a sweetened carbonated beverage). Hmmmm…
BTW, did anybody see the jersey/pants/socks worn by the local/regional/national team/athlete recently? It was totally awesome/atrocious! (okay, now we’re back on unis, right?)

So if someone orders “Scotch & Soda”, what does he get?
We won’t change things here—that’s for sure—and there probably truly isn’t a right or wrong in this…but post #102 does offer a certain logic, iif we incoporate both the chemical and “cocktail” definitions of Soda as a dual benchmark.
What’s right is what’s used wherever you’re standing at the time.
(As a side observation…ever notice how TV shows and movies avoid the “pop-soda” thing altogether? It’s like writers know no matter what dialogue they write, half the country will think it’s wrong.)

Its quite strange how often that worked. . . .
I’m surprised no one has said that they call it “soft drink.”
And I think the Jags pants have gold on either side of the black stripe. But, that’s just me.
A tissue is a tissue; a carbonated beverage is a pop; a copier is a copier. Besides, there are not several flavors of tissue, so it matters little if they are called Kleenex.
I like the updated fleur-de-bee sans gloves, but since I am not a NOLA fan, it matters little. I think the new unis are bland, but again, so what?
I AM a Timberwolves fan, however, so it is a huge disappointment to me to see what a mess the new unis are. I hate the sloppy collars, the high schoolish ass logos, the cartoonish trees, but most of all, I hate the shortening of Timberwolves to Wolves. Wolves is so generic and blah. Timberwolves has pizzazz. I will even grudgingly accept T’wolves, but only in a pinch. A total screw-up, in my opinion.
Oh, and welcome back, Paul. I’m glad you had a good vacation.

I don’t think anyone has pointed this out yet, but on the Hornets spec sheet for their new unis, they used “b” for black on one of the CMYK values instead of a “k.” Small point, but you’d think they’d proof these things before sending them out.
Hell yeah we say bubbler. I’ll even take drinking fountain. But never water fountain.
A water fountain is Cupid spouting water in the courtyard.
The water bubbles out – it’s descriptive. If you have a problem with that, I think you have to have a problem with water fountain for it’s inaccuracies.

Heyyyy…you’re right, LI Phil. When they’re below the knee they aren’t “shorts” anymore. They’re “pants”.
And so, in the history of uni-geekdom, this is a momentous day, this August 21, 2008. On this day, basketball shorts, as we knew them, officially ceased to exist.
Leave us all bow our heads in a moment of silent sartorial sadness.
(And then we’ll start debating what’s shorts and what’s pants).
I can’t believe I haven’t seen any comments on two oddities from The Games last night. Just wish I had time to look up pictures …
1) One female sprinter, I believe from Jamaica, had on a top that looked like, for lack of a better description, green and yellow overalls with over-sized buttons on the “shoulder straps”.
2) Another sprinter (400m hurdles, perhaps?) wearing an outfit that would best be described as a “Swiss Smurf”. I’m assuming she was of an indian decent requiring she cover up, but she did so with looked like a white hoodie holding a bundle of hair above and behind her, and red tights. It was quite a sight to see.
Sorry again for the lack of visual evidence. No time for that today.
On an unrelated note, I think the whole soda/pop thing has been run into the ground … except for MY story, of course, of when I moved from the Chicago suburbs to St. Louis in 1996, walked into a local grocery store and asked a clerk, “where is your pop?”. His response (a little confused, a little scared, and with his hand on the “magic button” below the register): “um … at home .. watching Matlock. Can I help you with anything?”

She’s Muslim and therefore must cover her hair. This was mentioned on the broadcast.

1. Trailer Park Boys = pure comedy gold. Why? It takes every stereotype you can think of and crams it into every episode. Hilarious.
2. Arrested Development = better than Curb Your Enthusiasm, and close to being Seinfeld. Sublime comedy, and Will Arnett is gold in that series.
3. Freaks and Geeks = didn’t build enough hype. It was a classic show, but it didn’t have the marketing or growing enthusiasm that AD or GtheB had. Which is sad because it was so good.
4. Every restaurant in Canada that I’ve been to serves ice with their soft drinks. Yes, that’s right – soft drinks. Not sodas or pops or sody pops or link. Another classic obscure reference to the past! I’m on a roll today! :o)

The reason they don’t put ice in the root beers at A&W is because the mugs are kept chilled. The chilled mugs keep the root beer cold as opposed to putting ice in it, much like bars are supposed to do with beer steins and beer.
Of course, the ice could melt and dilute the taste of the root beer, but if you’re drinking it that slowly, you didn’t order it because you were thirsty. :o)

If I may jump in here. . . companies lose their trademarks when their marks become the generic words for those products. Remember that in the late 70s’early 80s, Xerox had commercials that said, “You don’t Xerox a Xerox on a Xerox,” showing that you make a photocopy on a Xerox-brand photocopier machine.
It’s a slow day so I’m posting this beautiful 1959 pic of Accra’s Hearts of Oak for the third time in the past month and hoping it will get some traction. Yeah anything Bobby Orr autographs is expensive. It’s how he makes his living now, simular to Gordie Howe. It was so hard to find a Bobby Orr jersey for sale under 200 bucks. And that’s not even autographed!! Took MONTHS of searching to find one I could let myself buy.
Stupid.
That’s what I’ve been saying since the team came down here. And ESPECIALLY after they added the gold/yellow to the color-scheme. Just complete the transition. You don’t need to keep TEAL (calling it “Creole Blue” doesn’t change the fact that it’s TEAL) just to have some kind of connection with your past. You still have the “Hornets” nickname for that. Lose the pinstripes and change to green and these unis would be GREAT!

The thing with the purple, green and gold is that it’s SO overdone in terms of New Orleans. We’re very picky about when it’s Mardi Gras and when it’s not. Only tourists pretend it’s a party all year and wear beads every day.
Making everything in New Orleans purple, green and gold/Mardi Gras is like saying everything in New York should be red and have apples on it. Or everything in Florida should be orange and have Sunshine or Citrus on it.
Whoops, I see this is already addressed.

So overdone? How so? I don’t see it overdone on anything except maybe on all of the fleur-de-lis flags hanging in the French Quarter and the rest of the city. But even then you have numerous variations to those flags in multiple colors.
I have NO PROBLEM with the team trying to connect with the city by using purple, GREEN and gold. I think it’s a better color-combination and a smart move.
so…no love for a return to link for the hornets 3rd uni?
It’s overdone in that it’s all that anyone says/thinks/does when it comes to New Orleans. Mardi Gras is such a small part and yet it’s the only identifier people use. For the tourists intents and purposes, Mardi Gras isn’t even a week – they don’t even know it’s a whole season – and yet that one week defines the city.
I saw a show recently where they threw a New Orleans couple a Mardi Gras themed wedding and thought they were being clever. All I could think was how disappointed I’d be if that were my wedding.
I used to live in NOLA and I live in Wisconsin now. To me, it’s like when someone makes a cow or cheese joke here as though it’s the first time we’ve heard it. It’s not all Wisconsin is – you wouldn’t say we should have cheese yellow jerseys, right? And in that respect, Mardi Gras is not the only identifier for New Orleans/Louisiana.
The word I’m looking for is trite. I find the use of Mardi Gras motif trite. It doesn’t show creativity or forward-thinking – it’s predictable.

I still live in the New Orleans area and I think that Mardi Gras is a significant part of the region’s identity. Yes tourists walk around all the time with beads…but that’s because all of the shops in the quarter SELL beads year-round. I don’t think most tourists assume Mardi Gras to be a year-round thing, either. As for being over-done, when you walk around the city it’s evident that it’s not.
I think the fans of this team, this city and this region would LOVE a change to green from teal. It’s a throwback to New Orleans’ original NBA days with the Jazz and it’s something meaningful to the city. Too often, we see sports teams that really don’t try to make a connection with the local culture. The Hornets are DEFINITELY trying to do that and this would only further that bond.

No reason whatosever to have said, “a totally dated phrase – only old people say this!”
What did a time component or anyone’s age have to do with what I’d written? Issue was THAT the phrase had been said, not WHEN. Was talking about product names becoming generic, and “Xerox” is one of best examples in the past 50 years.
Just because something happened before someone was born doesn’t make it irrelvent…or even necessarily outdated.
That being said, Nicole, I also apologize. I’m a year older today (with a LOT more years behind me than ahead of me…”three-quarters home from the start to the end”), and I’m surprised that it’s getting to me more than I though it would. So I guess I kinda got a sore spot there.

NWA flight attendants to wear Delta uniforms
Associated Press
ATLANTA – Delta Air Lines Inc. wants its flight attendants’ uniforms, designed by Richard Tyler, to be worn by Northwest Airlines Corp. flight attendants in spring 2009.
Atlanta-based Delta is seeking to buy Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest in a stock-swap deal that would create the world’s largest carrier. The deal, announced April 14, is expected to close by the end of this year.
A joint company memo to flight attendants of both airlines on Thursday said that in the coming days Northwest flight attendants will receive details on upcoming “style clinics” that will show off the uniforms worn by Delta flight attendants.
At those sessions, Northwest flight attendants will get to try on the uniforms and choose which pieces work best for them, Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said. Delta flight attendants will be there to offer assistance, Talton said.
Delta hired Tyler in 2004 to do a makeover of some employee uniforms. At the time, Tyler said he wanted the uniforms to “look sexy and great” while keeping a “classic look” as well.
The uniforms for Delta flight attendants, gate and ticket agents and airport lounge officials got a complete makeover – from their shirts or blouses to their pants, gloves, hats and scarves. The uniforms debuted in 2006.
Tyler’s dresses have been worn by stars such as Julia Roberts, Heather Locklear and Jamie Lee Curtis.
According to Delta, there are 14,000 Delta flight attendants and 8,000 Northwest flight attendants.

noticed this in england and canada too
is ice that much of an anathema elsewhere? is it ‘too expensive’? this one i just don’t get
and the foreigners here are the same way…was in $tarbux the other day and some british chick ordered some iced coffee drink with “light ice” (and it was about half full of cubes)…to which she, quite snarkily i might said, “that’s NOT light ice…light ice is one or two cubes”…(of course, it didn’t help that the counter teen even more attitudinally replied…”it does here in AMERIKA”)
(i would have told the british chick to check for spit in her ‘new, light-iced’ beverage…but well…she kind of deserved it)
The main reason is the absence of free fountains. Customers feel ripped off when they paid for a glass of soda and get half of it filled with ice, which will turn to water in the middle of the meal.

Yeah, but last I checked the Packers wear cheese yellow helmets and their fans wear cheese hats. Like it or not, Mardi Gras is the biggest identifier for NOLA and therefore should be used to identify the team with it’s city. It’s not we’re saying that the neckline should look like a bunch of beads. Just that they missed a chance to make that franchise’s look unique to New Orleans. When I look at the new jerseys, I still see Charlotte.

As a Miami Dolphins fan, I’m very upset with the news from last week that Parcells is looking to fuck with what I believe to be one of the best uniforms in the NFL. However, the Dolphins have brought back the aqua pants with the white striped socks this year. If I recall correctly, Saban did away with these when he took over, and Cameron just stayed with not having them. I’m glad that Parcells did bring these back.
On a seperate not, I attend the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. We have no football team on campus (gone since the ’95 season I believe) so basketball is the big sport on campus. Our team has had some success in the past, taking Boston College to triple overtime in the tournament 3 years ago. Anyway, our team has been sponsored by And 1 for as long as I can remember. The team had nice uniforms my freshman year, and got new ones last year. I was at work today in our new University Center and 2 members of the coaching staff came in to reserve a room for a recruitment lunch. While talking with them I noticed that one of the coaches was wearing a Pacific Basketball shirt that was Nike. Before he left I asked if they had left And 1 for Nike (each sport on campus has its own deal; Women’s soccer is Nike, softball is adidas, baseball is New Balance, etc.) He told me that they had been with And 1 for 6 years and that the contract had expired in April and that they were indeed switching over to Nike. Anyway, he looked at me like I was slightly weird, but at least I know our team is probably going to have its third different uniform in the past 3 years.
Supposedly Mickey Mantle’s favorite song, and Roy Clark sang it his funeral.

leaving cleats @ home plate? why?
According to the story, they were “saying goodbye to the game they loved.”
It’s a slow day so I’m posting this beautiful 1959 pic of Accra’s Hearts of Oak for the third time in the past month and hoping it will get some traction. It’s my all time favorite sports team and my all time favorite uniform and fortunately the general look gets revived by the club every few years to become the primary kit.

I’ll take teh bait!
Good kit, but I’m still partial to Heerenveen’s uniform:

And occasionally, my pals and I will call beer “wobbly pops” but it’s still Beer.
SB
late to the game today.
Yes, I say xerox when I mean copy. I also used carbon paper. It was soda pop when I was growing up in Kansas.
Unis? I was a fan of the Charlotte pin stripes, but not so much of the teal. So the Hornets redos are OK by me, but those purple and green photoshopped versions are sweet. (Will that get me in trouble with the Adobe folks?)
The T-Wolves? I couldn’t understand when they rolled out the franchise that their uniforms had simply “Wolves.” Scrapping the full name was a step backward in my book. Timberwolves and Minnesota both stretch across a jersey pretty far.
Finally, RIP Gene Upshaw. I grew up a Chiefs fan (still am), but he was one classy Raider.
question for all you foreigners and world travelers…(i notice this every time im abroad…which is somewhat rare, but it has occurred)…
is the US the only nation that actually puts ice (or more than say, one or two cubes) in a cold beverage?
i was in…get this…a mickey d’s on the champs eleyses…(just had to, ya know??) and not only was my ‘supersize’ order smaller than a regular one here (back in about 1999…when they still had “supersize”)…there was NO ICE in my iced tea…WTF???
noticed this in england and canada too
is ice that much of an anathema elsewhere? is it ‘too expensive’? this one i just don’t get
and the foreigners here are the same way…was in $tarbux the other day and some british chick ordered some iced coffee drink with “light ice” (and it was about half full of cubes)…to which she, quite snarkily i might said, “that’s NOT light ice…light ice is one or two cubes”…(of course, it didn’t help that the counter teen even more attitudinally replied…”it does here in AMERIKA”)
(i would have told the british chick to check for spit in her ‘new, light-iced’ beverage…but well…she kind of deserved it)
It dilutes the drink. And gives you much more drink in the cup. Great for movie theaters taht fill your cup more then halfway with crushed ice.
“I’d like a small drink with no ice please.”
-Goes to machine and has to punch the automated button about 5 times to fill the cup… You get almost as much soda as a large…
And even in the south, I’ve only heard it called soda. If you ask me for a Coke, you’re getting a damned coke.
Keith Hernandez just called the Mets pants pajama pants in the bottom of the 8th.

Bottom Eighth Braves/Mets
Damion Easley pulls a ball foul…it goes THROUGH the webbing in Chipper’s glove…Gary Cohen/Ed Coleman? talks about the crisscross webbing casuing the problem and is amazed that Jones doesn’t switch gloves.
Next batter is Ramon Castro….Their commentator along the firstbase line talks about how close he is to the action. He notics how strong Reyes arm is as well as “How low the players wear their pants”.
COhen then jumps in talking about how they use elastic to cuff them under their heels making them look like “pajama Pants”. Cohen then hearkens back to George/Ted Hendrick being the person to start this trend.
He then mentions that he remembers Derek Bell as being the Met who wore the baggiest uniform, stating that you could have “fit two guys in there’!
Even my wife realized that this is a Uni-moment!
It’s a uniform and some people consider being kick ass a sport.

The Mets are wearing rally caps in the bottom of the 9th and all of the players have the number written on the inside. I know that they have to have some way to identify their hats, but I have never seen that.
prolly a 63 patch for the Rayduhz..

Lets hope the Hornets bring back the honeycomb key along with the pinstripes. Though I’m glad that the old teal changing to purple court between the key and the three point line is gone forever.

After the game, Wright was interviewed for scoring the winning run, diving headfirst int home, and the reporter warned that Charlie Samuel is going to need a whole box of tide!

Peyton switching from Reebok to Adidas? (Look close.)
OK, late to the show per usual…I love the concept of the fleur-de-bee on the NOLA shorts but it reminds me of this link
Anyone else?

Considering that adidas owns Reebok, this is more like switching from Taco Bell to KFC – same company, different logo. ;o)
