SI.com’s photo galleries are usually pretty good, but their current “Greatest College Football Players by Number” rundown offers a particularly rich lode of uni-related details. Here’s a rundown (several of which were also spotted by various readers over the past few days):
• I had completely forgotten about Texas A&M’s shoulder stripes.
• Was there a particular reason Oklahoma State was wearing a huge shoulder flag?
• I don’t think I’ve ever seen such small or high-positioned uni numbers as Iowa was wearing in the late 1930s. Also, note how the knee pads appear to be poking out below the pant cuffs.
• I’ve mentioned Ohio State’s big-ass TV numbers before, it’s always worth another look, just for the “Holy shit!” factor.
• Love this shot of Doak Walker wearing an all-star uni.
• Think monochromatic uniforms are a modern phenomenon? Then check out this old shot of Syracuse wearing solid orange. Plus note that the helmet stripes don’t match, and dig Jim Brown’s Lucite facemask.
• What’s the deal with Dick Butkus’s helmet stars? Were these early merit decals?
• I had no idea that Nebraska had worn this number typeface in the early ’60s.
• Check out Greg Roberts’s helmet — looks like a cross between the Willie Lanier style and the ProCap. Anyone know more?
• I love how football photos from the 1920s always seem to feature lots of little patches and rivets on the pants, like in this shot of Bronko Nagurski.
• Look at this shot of Buck Buchanan. Looks like he’s got “Bell” written on his elbow pad. At first I thought maybe this was a makeshift memorial for former commish Bert Bell, but he died in 1959, when Buchanan was still in college. Can anyone shed any light on this?
• Dig the stripes on Jim Seymour’s shoes — pretty cool. Also, it’s tough to say for sure, but it looks like the official may be wearing two-tone (i.e., non-striped) socks.
Too bad the gallery stops at uni No. 99 — they could easily have included an entry for Chuck Kinder, who wore No. 100 for WVU in 1963, to mark the 100th anniversary of West Virginia’s statehood.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday’s item about the guy with the Patriots logo tattooed on his head led Jon Smith to send along this photo, taken in 2006. That’s Jon on the left, posing with what he describes as “the ultimate Chargers fan.” He says there’s a matching bolt on the other side of the guy’s head. Wonder how he felt when the team changed its bolt design last spring. ”¦ According to this item UGA’s black jerseys have helped the school’s recruiting efforts (with thanks to Greg Riffenburgh). ”¦ Did you know that American-style football is played in Italy? I think that’s only the second time Maryland has worn a uniform other than red or white under Gary Williams. They wore black in the 2006 ACC tournament and lost. They wore gold a lot, and black some, under Lefty Driesell and Bob Wade. Their colors are red, white, gold, and black, so it’s not a stretch.

With regard to Nebraska’s unusual early ’60s font, I have a replica of that jersey . . . and it is ugly as sin.
I read in a book on Nebraska football that someone in the athletic department at the time hated that font, and it was jettisoned a few years into Bob Devaney’s coaching reign.
The change took place closely in time to the abandoning the black numbers on the sides of the helmets and replacing them with “NU” (which itself was shortlived).

In my opinion it is much too bright and hard on the eyes. Then again, maybe it is hard on the defenders’ eyes too.

I noticed a lot of LSU players with their mouthguards stuck in their facemasks during the run of play. It seemed to be mostly the defense, but Matt Flynn had his out during the first Tiger play from scrimmage, too.
All these guys with tatoos on their heads is nothing. I am an assistant district attorney in Houston, and when I first started working here as an intern about 2 years ago, I kept seeing hispanic guys with the Astros star logo tatooed on arms, and lots of heads (like taking up the whole back of their head). I thought they were all really big ‘stros fans. No…they are gang members. It is the logo for one of the big gangs. I would love to send Paul a picture, but I don’t want to get jumped in the elevator.

It looks more like that’s his chin strap than a mouth guard. And isn’t it weird that wearing a mouthguard in your helmet AND one in your mouth is a fashion statement.

The basketball gloves item first surfaced at the time that Dr. J and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played a very lame one-on-one game way back when, I believe as part of one of the networks’ NBA coverage. I remember seeing those gloves on Dr. J’s hands and thought, “How can he even FEEL the ball with those things?”
mouthpieces are a required piece of uniform in college football. often, players keep an extra on themselves somewhere (i kept mine in my thighpad) … looks like a lot of players monday kept their spare one attached to thier facemask in case they lose the one they are using.
After seeing Marino in the link Pitt uni they should make it an alternative.

Regarding American Football in Italy, I would highly recommend John Grisham’s Playing for Pizza. It’s the story of a journeyman NFL QB that plays in the Italian football league, very entertaining.
Grisham’s Bleachers was a good read too. Both books are small and could be finished in a week tops.

ESPN’s First Take was running some great footage of Goose yesterday morning. They had him in the White Sox red unis, an all-black Pirates uni with yellow stove-pipe hat, the Padres Taco Bell uniforms and a clip of him as a Yankee striking out a White Sox player wearing the classic black-pants, white-jersey-with-collar getup. Classic 70s baseball.
I love Michigan in yellow, but Maryland’s to me look terrible.
As for what is written on the elbow pad, looks to me more like BELI, but I can’t come up with anythign for that either.

Good catch. I was so busy looking at his Shrine jersey that I didn’t notice his foot inscription, which appears to say, “Jesus.”
I would guess that Buck Buchanan’s elbow pad could have been borrowed from his teamamte and fellow Hall of Famer Bobby Bell. I doubt it related to Bert Bell because at the time of the photo Buchanan was in the AFL and had never played a NFL game.

I always liked OSU’s huge numbers. The uni gods wll ensure OSU will keep losing in January until the big numbers and sleeve stripes return.
Maryland’s yellows look pretty sweet
2 things…
I knew about the Italian Football League because of a great book I recently read. “Playing for Pizza” was written by John Grisham and it is a very good and quick read. Second, Maryland is playing Holy Cross in their game last night. I currently go to HC and I have never seen the black jerseys before, maybe because I rarely see them on the road. But it is good for you Paul, because they usually wear all purple.
Ohio State’s unis sure looked better when they were the pants, helmets and jerseys all used silver instead of a mismatch of Metallic silver and dull grey like now.

For a period of time during 60s/70s link, and probably harder to attain than today’s smaller counterparts, which can often cover both sides of a helmet by the end of a season.

Re: having two mouthguards handy, even when the colour is ahrd to miss. I once saw an incident where a very clever and underhand Defensive player picked up a dropped mouthguard at the end of a play and when he found out it was none of his teammates who’d dropped it, tossed it away on his sideline, neatly removing the opposing Quarterback from the game until a replacement was found… Luckily the coaches had some cheap boil and bite strapped ones on the sideline so it didn’t take long to get him back in, but it did severely affect his dental safety… Happened in the British League a couple of years ago. (almost all football outside the US is played to NCAA rules so they are mandatory)
Some other random thoughts:
#7 – The orange helemet-white jersey-orange pants look for Florida is awesome.
#34 – Another Florida one, I didn’t remember Florida had orange jerseys in the past.
#56 – That’s a huge Big East patch on Michael Barrow’s shoulder
#84 – The same “two shades of gold pants” as seen in Deion appears again in UCLA.

Every time I see that someone is wearing yellow uniforms, I cringe a bit, but it seems like Maryland pulled off the look just fine. Still, it seems a little unnatural to see them in yellow. The white and red work just fine for them in my opinion.
Speaking of yellow unis, a color vs. color matchup last night as link. Thankfully, red (or Crimson) and yellow (or Maize) compliment each other nicely, unlike yellow and Illinois Orange.
One other note about that game: John Bielein (sp?) has apparently had new lights installed in Crisler Arena, and I noticed that it made the Maize Rage, which always looked somewhat odd in the dimness on TV, a little nicer to look at.

The helmet in question (“a cross between Willie Lanier and a ProCap”) is a MacGregor, externally padded helmet. It was used buy Ohio State (check out the Paul Warfield/OSU helmet on HelmetHut), Oklahoma (during the practices especially), Michigan State (Brad Van Pelt era). It was basically a normal MacGregor MH100 helmet (a clearshell plastic, that had the decals and paint applied from the inside to protect against damage) with a vinyl covered pad that ran the length of the middle section of the helmet. Later safety testing via liability lawsuits determined that the soft, vinyl exterior increased neck injuries due to the increased friction of the surfaces (helmet to helmet, helmet to ground, etc.)
Regarding movies…I just saw “Juno”. Besides being a great film, there is some awesome striped sock action in it. Also, just bought “The Rocket” , a hard to find Canadian film about Maurice Richard. The old unis and scenes were incredibly well done and so realistic. Check out link and you can see the pictures and the trailer. Highly recommended.

When my first son was born, February 2004, my wife had a LONG labor, and we are both big UW basketball fans. UW played at Illinois that night, and we had the 13 inch TV on in the room during her labor to try and take her mind off the pain. Illinois wore orange at home, UW had on their road red. On the 13 inch screen it was damn near impossible to tell which team was which. The best clue was to hear if the crowd cheered or not after a made hoop. Red and orange are WAYYY too close to be worn by opposing teams in the same game IMO.

Those pants probably were made of two different materials… one of the many problems of AstroTurf football fields was that repeated contact with the turf abraded the uni’s materials, especially the pants.
I seem to recall that the Dallas Cowboys added metal threads to the front of their uniform pants to combat the problem… the back of the pants remained a “stretchy” cloth material, since one falls forward in football far more often than one falls backward.
Today’s artificial turf surfaces are more “forgiving”; but I can still see where the front of a football player’s pants would get more “wear” than the back.

In the movie they had a smaller cross with “MU” towards the middle of the helmet. It was also done more professionally (as a true sticker and not two pieces of tape).
Did you notice that the Canadiens old timers were wearing white jerseys and the Blackhawks red jerseys, but the current Canadiens players were wearing red jerseys and the Hawks white. Shouldn’t the old timers jerseys matched what the current teams were wearing?

The #57 entry, Steve Kiner. This photo is taken b/t 1967 and 1969. BOTH teams virtually unchanged in 40 years. Easily identifiable as Tennessee and Auburn, and speaks volumes about change for change’s sake.

I think the spiderweb design by Spyder is really cool. Even though it’s their version of the swoosh, somehow it works for me. I remember seeing the spiderwebs while watching downhill skiing in the ’92 and ’94 Olympics but it wasn’t until years later (when I started skiing myself) that I realized it was a logo branding.

for years, nike, and now jordan brand’s flagship has been the air jordan.
it would be difficult to imagine dropping the flagship simply for the sake of having the last model coincide with the jersey number.

the 2 stars were because he was a two time (returning) starter (at that point in time)? The stars wouldn’t be for All-American awards (yet), since he played 3 years (frosh rule), and at the time of that photo would not have been awarded his second All American status yet (for his senior year).
2. I love Jim Brown’s all orange uni. and would also love if Illinois went back to these unis link helmet AND shoulder stripes match nicely!!

For Christmas I recieved a book “link” It runs down team by team, which players wore each number, and also some stats like most common number on the team, least common, number with the most points scored, retired numbers etc. It also gives an index that gives presumably every player and what numbers they wore and what team they wore them on.
Interesting reference. I’d recommend it to number enthusiasts, and would be willing to look some stuff up if anyone wants it.

Fairly sure the players don’t, especially the linemen. When tailoring sleeves on jerseys pretty much no manufacturer ever leaves enough space between the armpit seam and the shoulder top to accommodate the heftier end of the pad range – the scars my college jersey left me with until I was forced to switch to wearing a sleeved undershirt were nasty, none of the so called skill players ever complained about it, but most of the linemen have the same story.
Oddly enough I just noticed the mention of Richard Wrigglesworth in the ticker – his younger brother took my spot on our college rugby team when I was away for a year but I never played with him as he dropped out after a term or so – good job we don’t put names on the jerseys as mine is nearly as long…

I used to LOVE their jerseys, but the quality has gone down in recent years. I bought a Minneapolis Millers’ and a Mud Hen’s jersey in the mid 90’s the were beautiful. The stiching, lettering, weight if the fabric, etc. About 3 years ago I bought a Jersey City Giants Jersey and I sent it back. I was disappointed in the stiching on the numbers, fabric was flimsey.

Seeing all of those college jerseys in the SI thing mad me think of the old Bob Hope Christmas Special where he introduced the football All-Americans and they would come out in their uniforms (or maybe just jerseys) and he’d make a crack at each one individually. Ever since we discussed corporate logos and negative space on here about 4 months ago, I’m obsessed with the FedEx logo, and the arrow (between the E and x) pointing to the right. Every time I see a truck or package or anything, I’m mezmerized.

The only league that still uses real leather balls is the NBA. Basketballs today are virtually all composite (except for the really cheap rubber balls).
I can’t imagine any performance advantage to wearing gloves while playing basketball but I’d love to know the story behind that picture.
Question: Why is the NFL the only league that still allows backdrop advertising in the post-game press conferences (or media opportunities) during the first two rounds of the playoffs? I know that MLB, the NBA and the NHL disallow it during their post-season play, but the NFL only disallows it during the conference title games and the Super Bowl. Replace the ads with the generic NFL playoffs logo IMHO I say.
The Canadiens did the same thing when the Red Wings were in town a month or so back. They’re doing it because it’s a rare year that the Habs are playing all of the Original 6 teams.

I saw like 2 minutes of a D-League game on the NBA channel last week. There were, I dunno, about 35 people in the crowd, who happened to all be in the first row of the side facing the camera.
When I was in Italy last summer, I saw flyers all over the city of La Spezia that asked for anyone with American football abilities to try out for the local team. I wish I took a photo of it. I can only imagine the amazing skill-level that those teams possess.

yeah you can see through them pretty easily. they seemed to wear that style in the late 60’s and early 70’s. it’s just a thinner mesh on the bottom part of the jersey, probably to keep the players cooler. i’ve seen them on some other teams too.

This is a false statement. High schools in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Wyoming still use leather balls. I know from experience.

Most Illinois high schools do too. I know I’ve seen a couple teams that used composite balls in road games. But at least the teams in the area all use leather.

Just a minor correction here.
As a part of a build-up to Montreal’s Centennial in 2009, the Habs will honor the other 5 “Original 6” franchises. Next season, the Habs will honor New York, Boston, and Toronto. Chicago and Detroit were honored this year because they won’t play in Montreal next year.

That basketball picture with the gloves the kid is wearing the all black Cutter’s pro fit receiver glove (I’m a regional rep here in Canada) I’ve often thought about wearing the gloves for basketabll because my hands aren’t large enough to palm a basketball for one handed dunks. The Gators wore blue for years (the Steve Spurrier-John Reaves years), then broke out the orange late in Charlie Pell’s first (disasterous 0-10-1) season (1979) – I want to say it was against Florida State. They lost in them (natch), but wore orange with white pants at home and white with orange pants on the road (mostly) through the 1989 season.
When Spurrier took over in 1990, he brought back the blue. I think Florida may have more athletic teams that wear primarily blue uniforms now than that wear orange, whereas it used to be reversed.

I noticed the thing about Ricky Jean-Francois while watching the Allstate National Championship game the other night, but I think he actually had two mouthguards with one in his mouth and one in his helmet. I don’t know why it was this way but I don’t think he forgot his mouthguard, he actually had an extra one.

now that is a beautiful jersey. the colors complement each other perfectly and block varsity numerals make it all that much better. remove the patch and that is a jersey that would go with a tuxedo.

Just a minor correction here.
As a part of a build-up to Montreal’s Centennial in 2009, the Habs will honor the other 5 “Original 6” franchises. Next season, the Habs will honor New York, Boston, and Toronto. Chicago and Detroit were honored this year because they won’t play in Montreal next year.

Thanks for clearing that up. I heard them talking about it during the Wings/Habs game on Versus earlier in the year, and what I said earlier is what they said. That’s odd that a television network would get a detail that big wrong.

I have heard it both ways. The line is either ending at #23, then just releasing “premium” line shoes that are supposedly the Air Jordan, just without the moniker and number system, and then the Brand pushing a lot of new, innovative team product. The other way is to continue selling the Air Jordan line as is, and then just stop it when the sales don’t match what effort is put into the line. It will eventually be hard to sell a line of shoes to kids who never even saw MJ play and pub this as being an on-court shoe for them. But Jordan Brand can still make money on retroing every numbered Jordan their is, which they will continue for quite awhile, for better or worse.

The All-American Football Conference had awarded a team to Cleveland and Paul Brown was involved from the beginning as a part owner and coach. He was a legend in Ohio after his playing and coaching careers, and a stint in the Service during WWII. He gave this franchise instant creditibility and a huge fan base.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer ran a name the team contest and “Panthers” was selected. Brown shot down this name, as it was the name of a former non-successful semi-pro team in Cleveland. A 2nd contest offered up the “Brown Bombers” after boxer Joe Louis, and the name was shortened to Browns, although not so much to honor Paul Brown, but Joe Louis…..strange, but true, because Louis had no real ties to Cleveland.
Brown never was opposed to this name, it played to his ego, his legend, and his cult-like following in Ohio. He also lobbied, hard, for the color scheme, after holding training camp at Bowling Greeen State University in the middle 1940’s and he really liked the orange and BROWN. This did nothing to but add to his presence in Ohio, as it, along with the name, led folks to believe that this was “his” team.
Oklahoma State also had a Japanese flag on the right side of the jersey for the game in 1988 against Texas Tech in Tokyo.

I e-mailed paul about this and he asked me to post it on the comments section to see if any one else out there might know this one….I’m a huge michigan football fan, and loved seeing the pride stickers they used to have (the blue wolverine inside a maize football shaped sticker.) so I had some made up from an original i had recieved while attending fotball camp at michigan when i was in high school and i now sell those replicas on e-bay as i’ve found several others who also miss seeing the pride awards build up on wolverine helmets over the course of the season. i had one of my customers inform me that i was incorrect in the placement of the stickers. i had always seen the wolverine’s snout face out on either side of the helmet, all the pics and film i have found have the wolverine facing out, but this guy claims to have worked in the athletic dept. at michigan while a student there and swears up and down that it was mandatory that the stickers face inward. i have asked him for some proof and have scoured the internet for pics to try to find some evidence of the wolverines facing in. could anyone advise on this matter. i hate to upset a customer if this might be a case of “you’re both right” thanks to anyone who can help!
