Monday Morning Uni Watch

9funfr.png

The big uni-related news in the NFL yesterday had nothing to do with the players. It was the pink ribbons being worn by most coaches, owners, and other sideline personnel (although a few coaches went ribbon-free, including one guy who obviously didn’t want a ribbon messing up his carefully manicured look). The officials got involved too, wearing pink wristbands (here’s a closer look) and ribbons, although the zebras’ ribbons didn’t have the litle NFL logo pin.

Speaking of which: Isn’t a little offensive to turn cancer into a branding opportunity? Like, why use that NFL logo pin in the first place? MLB does this with their Mothers Day and Fathers Day ribbons, too. Similarly, despite what this decal says, hockey doesn’t fight cancer — chemo and radiation do. Why not have a decal that says, “Find a Cure” or “Support Cancer Research,” instead of a message that’s essentially self-aggrandizing?

Meanwhile, in non-cancer developments:

• Can’t say I was in love with the Titans’ blue-on-blue look, but I didn’t hate it either. The more of it I saw, the more it started to grow on me. Hmmmmmmm.

• The Rams, on the other hand”¦.

• As discussed in yesterday’s comments: Although it’s not a new thing for him, John Kasay was wearing a watch and his wedding band while kicking yesterday.

•  The Falcons logo on Alge Crumpler’s left sleeve was facing the wrong way (it should look like this.

• No photo yet, but LaDainian Tomlinson’s American flag decal was still missing. (In a related item: The Bills will be wearing their throwbacks tonight, and I’m wondering if their helmets will be completely blank in the back, as they were last year).

Research Reminder: I’m still very much in the market for examples of typos and misspellings on uniforms. In particular, I’m having trouble finding a photo of Wayne Gretzky from his first game with the Rangers, when he wore “Gretkzy” on his back, but non-superstar typos are fine too. Thanks.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Several readers have noted that Jimmy Rollins wears a Cool-Flo hemet when batting right-handed but a conventional lid when swinging from the left side. ”¦ Ryan Purdie notes that the TV numbers on Utah’s uniforms have been doing a slow fade. In 2005 they were on both the home and road unis; in 2006, still on the road set but not on the home design; and this year, they’re missing from both the home and road unis. ”¦ Mike Alper notes that the Blackhawks’ sleeve numbers seem to have been cut rather sloppily, without enough white space. Additional examples here, here, here, and here. ”¦ Marquette will have some rad throwback alternate jerseys this season (with thanks to Jon Aubry). ”¦ Reprinted from last Thursday’s comments but still worth a look: A surprisingly in-depth article devoted to Cole Hamels switching undershirts during Game 1 of the Phils/Rockies series. ”¦ Remember last week’s discussion of negative space? Markus Kamp found another good example in this Seahawks 12th man pin. ”¦ The National Federation of State High School Associations has enacted a bunch of new lacrosse uniform regulations (with thanks to Ryan Burns). ”¦ The Islanders’ Stanley Cup stripes were missing from Bill Guerin’s shoulder the other day (good spot by Tim Hudson). ”¦ Not truly uni-related, but there’s a spectacular slideshow devoted to photos of old Comiskey Park here — highly recommended (great find by Michael Gargano). ”¦ Check out the unsightly gap between Daniel Sedin’s right sock and pant cuff (as spotted by Daniel Sherman). ”¦ Marhsall’s basketball team has entered NikeWorld (that depressing news courtesy of Jake Keys). ”¦ “During Friday night’s Pens/Ducks game, the announcers were talking about these special pads that hang over the laces of the skates,” writes Nate Budziszewski. “They said most players don’t like to wear them because they’re embarrassed, so they wear a more cosmetic version that’s hidden under the laces.” ”¦ The NFL has enlisted Chelsea FC to help promote the upcoming Giants/Dolphins game in London. First visible evidence of this: Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora wearing Chelsea jerseys. ”¦ Jeff Tripodi found a 1987 SportsCenter highlight clip in which George Hendrick is referred to as “He With the Long Pants.” ”¦ Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera both wore red trunks for their super featherweight title bout Saturday night. ”¦ Reprinted from Saturday’s comments: Illinois players are wearing “Team” on their nose bumpers — a staple of Ron Zook-coached teams. ”¦ Bugs and baseball? Nothing new about that. ”¦ Hey, speaking of Friday’s bug-a-thon, here’s some recommended movie viewing for Yankees fans and Joba Chamberlain: Them (1954), which features huge nuclear-irradiated ants, and Starship Troopers (1997), in which the military forces of Earth wage intergalactic war against giant alien bugs. Both offer comforting reassurance that humans really can overcome insects. ”¦ Auburn’s 1957 throwbacks didn’t do much for me, given that they left so much contemporary clutter on the jersey’s upper chest. ”¦ Kent State University wideout Derek McBryde’s right TV number has been backwards for the team’s past two home games (good catch by Brad Foster). ”¦ The Japan Basketball League has introduced a new mascot. And his name — I kid not — is Hoopy. This is so fucking great, I don’t even mind that he’s not wearing striped tube socks (big thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Our own Vince Grzegorek was quoted extensively in this article about the Indians’ uniform history, which ran in yesterday’s Cleveland Plain Dealer. The printed article included additional quotes from Vince, plus photos, so Ohio readers should fish their copies of the Sunday paper out of the recycling pile. ”¦ The striped belt phenomenon has trickled down all the way to high school (good spot by Jack Krabbe). ”¦ Susan Freeman attended the Stars’ home opener in Dallas on Friday and reports that “the new slimmer jerseys [kept getting] caught in the shorts, leaving half the numbers obscured” (but she didn’t mind so much cuz she got a pair of jersey beer cozies). The next day she checked out the traveling “Baseball as America” exhibit and took dozens of photos, which are available in a slideshow here. … Wisconsin’s women’s hockey team has won two national championships wearing this design, so Nicole Haase was surprised to attend a game on Saturday and see the team skating out looking like this, which is essentially the same design that the men’s team wears. “I asked a girl who was working the bench about the jerseys,” says Nicole, “and she said they were new and she thought they were permanent.” … During the preseason, the Lightning’s road jerseys had uni numbers on the front but the home jerseys didn’t. Now that the season has started, the numbers are appearing on the home set as well. According to a small item buried on this page (sent my way by Doug Mooney), “The team decided to make the change near the end of the preseason and sewed the numbers on after getting permission from the league.”

This 10:15 thing is going to take some getting used to. I was nearly in tears at 9:37 when I saw that Celtics photo for the umpteenth time. I never thought I would be so happy to see Vince Young in my life.

Does the motion W curve in opposite directions on the two sides of Wisconsin’s football helmets? Can’t find a photo right now.

I can’t find any pics of it, because he did not do anything in the game yesterday, but in yesterdays Red Sox/Angels game, Angels Catcher, Mike Napoli’s jersey had an error. The halo around the “A” in Angels was black instead of silver, outlined in black. You can clearly see it in his first AB, if anyone has the GameDay internet feeds, and wants to get a pic or two of it.

Here’s an interesting uni tidbit from a profile piece on Joe Paterno in this month’s GQ:

“Study. Wear socks to class. Cut your hair, shave your face, stop complaining about the uniform. There would be no names on the jerseys; the individual was committed to the team, not to himself. Forget about symbols on your helmet, badges of individual accomplishment. Forget about it. Not even an American flag. Nothing. Plain white helmets, plain white pants, plain white or blue jerseys, black high top shoes. If the Amish came up with a football uniform, this is what it might be.”

    Two questions:

Wouldn’t most football jerseys in NikeWorld, with all of the weird stripes and piping, violate the new NFHS lacrosse jersey standards?

Other than not having a helmet logo, what’s the difference between Auburn’s throwbacks and their regular road uniforms?

In regards to the striped belt, that’s old news to me, my JV and Varsity teams did that consistently (albeit that wasn’t too long ago, I’m a third year in college, but take it for what its worth).

Speaking of that picture, I love orange jerseys, but not with that number type. Although, the orange Cutters he’s wearing on his hands are B E A Utiful!!
Marquette will have some link this season
wow! upward vertical arching using letters of decreasing height! perhaps a sartorial first?

Friday night I went to the Blue Jackets – Ducks game. From where I was sitting, you couldn’t make out the insignia on the front of the Ducks jerseys. Kind of ironic when you think about last year we were talking about how nice it was that Anaheim had the larger-than-normal rear numbers. The Jackets new duds looked pretty fine in person.

Why are the Dallas Stars beer cozies designed so that when there is actually a beer in them the logos will be held upside down?

Nearly everyone in the Packers secondary last night were wearing no white socks, or about an inch of white, and black and yellow shoes, not the white that the rest of the team wears. Me wonders if there’s a fine coming.

i was watchin the auburn vandy game on sat. I thought the auburn throw backs were horable it looked like they just took the decal off the helmets. how cheap is that.

Also from that game i saw a shot of one of the Vandy capitans with a “C” on his chest as well as a ncaa patch the nike swoosh and the sec 75th patch. sorry no screen grab but it looked very cluttered
…a new link. And his name – I kid not – is Hoopy. This is so fucking great, I don’t even mind that he’s not wearing striped tube socks.
Is he wearing one striped tube sock on his left foot? What is that black stripe supposed to be? Now, I think I already know the answer, but is that a giant afro? I’m not black, but is that offensive to anyone?

Final note: Round 2 is up on the link

OK, I’m back at a computer so I’ll ask that question leading into what I’m truly crious about. The motion W is different on each side. Can anyone think of other teams that have to change their helmet mark for it to work on both sides of the helmet? Not just mirror images like the Redskins, Broncos, or Patriots. I mean an actual design link like the link must do.

Why are the Dallas Stars beer cozies designed so that when there is actually a beer in them the logos will be held upside down?

Those are for bottles where the neck of the beer bottle comes through the neck of the jersey

Ah, Marquette 1971 – Medalist Sand-Knit, the MU supplier, used it as a guinea pig for some new designs, and this was the classic. The style – better known for its use on the 1970s Cavaliers in the Jim Chones era – included what Sports Illustrated described as “a shade from which the color blue may never recover.” I remember (I was in high school at the time with access to sales brochures) Sand-Knit selling unis with a variety of off-colors, such as a bright fuschia for red and the type shown here for blue. One of our rivals had maroon-gold colors, got the new ones and looked like they had switched to pink. That only lasted one season.

However, these were overshadowed by the no-tuck-in Bo Ellis classics of a couple years later.

Has anybody noted that the Rockies have worn the same black sleeveless jerseys throughout their extraordinary playoff run (home and away)? They wore them for the play-in game against SD, too. I hate ’em, though if they didn’t have the silver piping around the sleeve holes I’d find them much less objectionable.

I thought their purple jerseys looked great, particularly under the lights. I dig the simple one color orange paw on the shoulders. Of course, as a Hokies fan, Clemson can shove it. :D

they are the kind that go over a long-neck. The neck of the bottle comes out the link.

    a haircut can offend people?

I always like the color and design of the Titan’s uniforms.

I agree with most, the Auburn “throwbacks” were a ridiculous. It is basically their current uniforms without the logo on the helmet.

Seeing those ugly, putrid, disgusting sweaters from Dalls, Vancouver, NY Islanders, Wild (home, love the away jerseys) and Lightning…I have come to a change of mind. At first I thought the Ray’s new baseball uniforms were kind of boring…but the mistakes made by the NHL has made me come to the conclusion that MLB recognizes boring is a preferable choice disgusting.

So count me as someone who now likes Tampa’s new baseball uniform.

It’s not that it’s just a hair-style, it’s the stereotype that a basketball has to be a black person. I’m really not sure if it is offensive, I am truly curious.

I saw a couple of uni-related oddities this weekend.

We took our daughter to see The Gameplan yesterday. The Rock’s team (the Boston Rebels) is outfitted in Under Armour gear, with logo creep EVERYWHERE, and the Rock is constantly walking around in Under Armour gear when out of uniform, but there is one scene where Morris Chestnut’s character talks to the Rock after practice in the locker room while wearing a Nike undershirt (with prominent swoosh on the collar), and there is one scene where the Rock’s daughter is wearing a Nike-logoed exercise top and yoga-pants with “NIKE” across her butt.

Also, I finished my Madden 08 season last night and decided to kill some time by playing the Pro Bowl. The Chargers had their updated uniforms in the game (with white helmets) but all of their Pro Bowlers were in their old blue helmets. Odd that they didn’t change that, but maybe no one ever plays the Pro Bowl on Madden anyway.

How solid did Mizzou look with gold pants?

Wish they wore them every game.

    Amen. Classy look.

So a white guy can’t have an afro?

I think its fine to say “Hockey fights cancer”. Sure, it doesnt medically help, but the NHL donates money and all that. Causes always say “Join the fight”…even though all they want is money. Giving money is helping fight.

Not truly uni-related, but there’s a spectacular slideshow devoted to photos of old Comiskey Park here – highly recommended (great find by Michael Gargano).

this is an amazing slideshow… id love to know the program that was used to create it…

Marhsall’s basketball team has entered NikeWorld (that depressing news courtesy of Jake Keys).

depressing? i really like them. not too busy, but not too plain either.

1983: While warming up before the fifth inning of a game in Toronto, Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield hits and kills a seagull with an errant throw, prompting skipper Billy Martin to quip, “It’s the first time he’s hit the cutoff man.” After the game, Winfield is charged with cruelty to animals and forced to post $500 bond, but the charges are dropped the next day.

ok, the charges were dropped the next day, but really, that has got to be one of the most outrageous criminal charges ive heard of relative to sports.

Is anybody else praying the Rockies lose a damn game so that they can stop wearing those ridiculous vests? I’m assuming it’s become a superstitious thing. My God, they’re horrid. I don’t want to be angry any more when i watch the NLCS. Please bring back the white pinstripes!

The seinfeld clip was perfect…and I’m a die hard steelers fan. I was watching in a sports bar yesterday and didnt notice the lack of a ribbon…great use of a great show!

Several readers have noted that Jimmy Rollins wears a Cool-Flo helmet when batting right-handed but a conventional lid when swinging from the left side.

Paul, Rollins definitely wore the different helmets. However, he is not currently wearing any helmet at all. He’s on a couch doing nothing. Granted… he’s probably waiting for his MVP trophy in the mail… but he’s not playing baseball. And that makes me happy.

wasnt there another “bug game” during the late regular season within the last 5-10 years? i remember it being alot more out of hand than what we saw on friday night.

im thinking it may have been in detroit or cleveland.

Just from watch a few NHL games this season teh Stupid front TV numbers even on my 50 HD TV are basically unreadable in action, take them off, they look terrible and are useless.

    Don’t tell link.

I’m just noticing link The lettering on the front has four layers! Red in the middle, then a blue border, then a white border, then a silver shadow.

I kind of like jerseys where the numbers are the same color as the jersey (SF Giants black alternate, Orix Blue Wave, etc.), but this one is a little overdone.

What other teams have four-layer lettering? The link do (home and link too), and I think the Miami Heat used to.

Isn’t this heavy and hard to play in?

for those who saw last weeks steroid admission press conference:

It seems to be a meatball holding a basketball with a face. Note the arms and legs both end in the meatball. It also seems like the meatball is wearing a knee brace and an elbow brace. Seems pretty random.

Speaking of bugs, I remember seeing Cubs/Cardinals night games in old Busch Stadium in the 80’s where there were moths everywhere, attracted by the stadium lights and the heat from the Astroturf field. I even seem to remember the Cubs’ announcers mentioning how common that was in St. Louis, but I can’t find any pictures or footage of it now.

I’m with Joe at comment 45. I tuned in the Lightning game Saturday for three minutes in my channel surfing and found the numbers can’t be deciphered. not even on the HD screen.

At least I don’t have to try to watch any hockey for several months now.

Hate those all blue Rams unis. Ruins my favorite NFL hone unis.

I think the Titans have some of the worst unis, and yesterdays were better than the all navy look, but still really bad. The white shirts and powder blue pants are the only combo I like (maybe then just Oiler nastalgia?).

Two notes on that 1987 footage that was linked:

    1. John Saunders with the mini-‘fro on the highlights.

    2. Now we all know who to blame for the epidemic of long pants in the game of baseball. Thankfully, not Barry Bonds.

The Dallas Stars example doesn’t indicate a flawed feature of the uniform; the Stars players in that photo are just choosing to tuck their jerseys into their pants. It’s actually quite obvious.

“the new slimmer jerseys [kept getting] caught in the shorts, leaving half the numbers obscured”

I actually made a comment about this after last year’s allstar game. There are certain pant models that stick out in the back and puts the tighter rbk edge in tension when bent over then kinda sloppily tucks in what you stand up.

As a goalie this always happened to me until college when my jersey had a fight strap and that kept the jersey from creeping in the breezer.

This happens with goalies because the hip pad portion of the breezer sticks up a bit, then when in the standard goalie crouch there is quite a gap between the back and the breezer which can be kind of seen in this google image; link Even with the fight strap though there were times where one side would end up tucked in because of different movements. It seemed it was always my stick side tucked in so I simply started tucking it in in a manner that was comfortable.

I was going to agree with this… but I’m not sure Rollins deserves it either. When Rollins is on a team where four guys hit at least 27 homers and Utley hit 22 even though he missed a month… it’s tough to pick one guy out of that team who was “most valuable.” Except maybe Tom Glavine.

Re the Cleveland Plain Dealer article – unlike the NY Giants’s 1906 “World’s Champions” jersey, the Indian’s 1921 “Worlds Champions” [sic]uniforms were of course grammatically incorrect, unless they considered themselves champions of the Solar System.

Hmph! Never had that problem… but my torso is unusally short, compared to my arms and legs, so my sweaters always hung well over the breezers.

Oh, and on that other topic; if you are Caucasian, once wore a ‘fro, and know all the words to “Play That Funky Music (White Boy),” you were probably Single In the 1970’s!

Nike has been a corporate sponsor of Penn State athletics for more than 13 years they manufactured our jerseys. The money that sponsorship brings in helps fund stadium expansion and construction, scholarships, improved practice facilities, an on, and on. A slight sacrifice in uniform integrity is a small price to pay for what has been an enormously beneficial relationship for the university.

Nobody I have ever met has questioned Coach Paterno’s drive to make Penn state a better place, so maybe, just maybe, he thought it was silly to turn down millions of dollars to prevent an athletic apparel logo (less that one inch square mind you) on the teams uniforms.

So, Ooooooo, maybe he didn’t nail it. Maybe he just didn’t think it all the way through.

just got confirmation of the bug game
my father was in detroit on business and attended the game.
he said the swarm of bugs cleared out the entire lower section of fans. those in the bullpen started small fires to keep the bugs away, eventually they put one of the fires in a large garbage can which started a large blaze which needed to be put out by stadium officials.
i believe this might be the article about it

Does anyone else find it funny/odd that teams with terrible unis (i.e. the Bills) bring out their really awesome throwbacks on days when they have higher profile games (i.e. the Bills tonight)? They’re akin to those people who live like total slobs, but then clean their house spotlessly when they have company…so they aren’t embarrassed.

Paul, in your “What’s bugging you?” blurb on Page 2 today, you missed a couple:

Aug 27, 1990 – The Brewers-Blue Jays game is delayed 35 minutes when a huge swarm of gnats descends onto the field through the open SkyDome roof. Milwaukee scratches out a 4-2 win.

Aug 3, 2001 – The Blue Jays defeat the Orioles‚ 10-1‚ despite an infestation of aphids in the 3rd inning. Although the game is not delayed‚ home plate ump Tim Welke asks that the roof of the SkyDome be closed. Toronto’s Jeff Frye wears a dust mask in the dugout.

I hope Julius Jones of the Cowboys is again wearing the mystery Schutt helmet tonight.
I haven’t seen this new helmet discussed on Uni-Watch yet.
This helmet looks like Schutt tried to combine an Air-advantage helmet with an Ion.

I’m a Phillies fan, but not a homer — Rollins is no more deserving than Holliday. David Wright is the MVP, but the writers aren’t going to give it to him because they’d perceive that as rewarding the Mets for folding the tent and missing the playoffs. And Hanley Ramirez pretty clearly had the best offensive season of anyone in the NL, but likewise the writers aren’t going to give the award to a guy on a last-place team if there are other viable options. (And he’s a butcher defensively, but of course that didn’t seem to hurt Ryan Howard in last season’s balloting.)

Holliday’s splits are absolutely outrageous — a 300-point gap in OPS. He is clearly an excellent hitter, but equally clear is the fact that his numbers are a product of Coors Field.

Call it what you want. Selling out is selling out. I dont have a problem with that so much as i have a problem with the “we’re better than everyone because we have plain unis” Whatever…they have a swoosh and that’s that.

I mean an actual design change like the Baltimore Ravens must do.

    Hmmm…..

    SAME DECAL ON BOTH SIDES:
    49ers
    Bears
    Colts
    Cowboys
    Giants
    Jets
    Packers
    Raiders
    Saints

The Bears do not have the same actual decal on both sides of the helmet if so the ‘C’ on one side would be backward. Not necessrily a design change but a practical change

Look at it again. It is the same decal…no matter which side of the helmet you are looking at , its a “C”. If it where a different logo, THEN the “C” would be backwards as the open end would face the same direction of the helmet.

but in real life you would need to have two different decal with adhesive on a different side depending on what side of the helmet you need to put it on

yest it looks the same but form a practical standpoint you need two c’s to pull it off

No, it’s the same exact decal on both sides. It’s just a letter “C”, so the adhesive would always be on the same side.

There is no rotating of the logo though. Two identical decals. Take the backing off of one and apply to the helmet. Rotate the helmet and apply the other, identical, decal on the other side. Nothing is different between the decals. The orientation is the same.

that’s what i meant rotate helmet apply decal

“we’re better than everyone because we have plain unis”

Who said that? Because it wasn’t me, and I’m damn sure it wasn’t Coach Paterno.

It is true that Penn State’s players and fans view our football uniforms in a special way. But your statement is the polar opposite of it. The closest approximation of the feeling I get when I see them would be Gene Hackman’s speech in Hoosier’s when he tells his players not be distracted by the rich school’s “fancy uniforms”.

Thirty years ago, they were Paterno’s way of thumbing his nose at the establishment powers. Ignore, the fancy uniforms of the Alabama’s and Texas’ of the world just get them on the field and all that will matter is that we are better than they are. Later, as Penn State turned into an old money powerhouse, rather than an upstart newcomer, it changed some, but it’s still cool, in my opinion.

To describe it, you’ll have to allow me a short story about how first fell in love with the concept of uniwatch, albeit along time before there was a uniwatch.

It was 1985. Penn State was ranked in the top three, and was playing on the road against West Virginia. It was a big game for WVU; their place was packed and loud. They had their fancy uniforms (which at the time were cool as hell) with the logo on the helmet, merit stickers, names on the jerseys, the whole nine yards. But their team sucked. When Penn State came out in their white’s, it was the visual representation of the fact that all of WVU’s fancy bells and whistles didn’t mean shit once the game started. I think now that Penn State’s white uniforms are meant to be subversively intimidating, in stark contrast to the clumsy way all sorts of stupid piping and decals is meant to convey the image of being a big time program proven by nothing more than fancy expensive uniforms.

The swoosh is a sad sign of the times, but at this point no matter what uniform manufacturer PSU went with, a jersey logo would be obligatory. In my opinion, what’s more important than the logo is the fact that basic ideals of the uniform and the history behind it remain unchanged.

Frankly, if what you said about us were true, then the Nike Swoosh would be selling out. But there is more to it than that. Nike bought less than one square inch of fabric, not the sprit of what that uniform stands for.

    Sorry for the long post.

Harrington got married during the offseason. One of the local papers linked to his gift registry, only to find out it was the wrong Joseph Harrington.

(Actually, the QB is John Joseph Harrington Jr.)

Pistons’ 50th anniversary logo is tasteful on the home unis. Almost makes up for the bizarre sight of Rodney Stuckey (or anyone other than Ben Wallace) wearing #3.

Zach Thomas of the Miami Dolphins started the game against Houston wearing a revolution helmet and then I noticed that he was wearing his original helmet but finished the game with the revolution helmet.

Not only is Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd sporting the socks up to his knees, he also has an old school windup. Are we sure this isn’t Bob Feller in disguise?

Just curious: did anyone else catch the “Dallas Cowboys: Aaaaaaag” graphic on MNF that was up for a second? And Buffalo looking awesome as always in their throwbacks.
I agree with most, the Auburn “throwbacks” were a ridiculous. It is basically their current uniforms without the logo on the helmet.
…that’s because they are the current uniforms. The word ‘throwback’ is kind of getting tossed around here. Take away 3 years in the 90’s of orange drop-shadow numbers and you have uniform that hasn’t changed in more than half a link. And yes, that is a picture of the ’57 championship team. Surprise. They’re 98.3 percent identical to the current design. They’ve been wearing a ‘throwback’ for the past 50+ years. Besides, the school never even link the team would be wearing a ‘throwback’ uniform: only ’57-style helmets with their white uniforms, as the ’57 team wore white at home for several games. They can’t do anything more than that aside from taking all the facemasks off and giving everyone on the team crew-cuts.

What I’m trying to say is I personally can’t expect a manger to dip into a budget to order a whole new set of jerseys and the only changes from the current design and the one you’re commemorating is removing a .5 by 3 inch wordmark and making the collar white. For something that minute, it’s not worth the money for one game. I know that it urks some people here and I know I’m beating link, but I don’t think it’s fair to say to say that Auburn made a lazy attempt at a ‘throwback’ when the team is still using the same traditional design they’ve had since Eisenhower was President.

If you are talking about white guys with ‘fros, don’t forget about link, who now plays basketball for Texas.

While no NFL player (or high school or college) uses the slot, many PeeWee players can only fit the chinstaps correctly by using these. And for my money, whatever was spent was justified if it does infact increase the safety of the product for even one athlete.

My post on the Penn State/Nike deal wasn’t to slam Penn State, their uniforms or the Nike deal. I love their unis. i was in my 20’s before I realized they were blue and white. I thought they were black and white. Classic generic uniforms like the beer cans on All in the Family. I understand the team first deal and no fancy stickers and all that. I also totally get the fact that ANY program that wants to compete needs a deal with some athletic apparel company. But the article from GQ along with announcers and fans of Penn St like to play along with the whole idea that being plain emphasizes their old-school mentality. A few years ago Penn St voted not to wear commemorative Big Ten anniversay patches for that same reason. It was a ‘holier than thou’ move. But alas, nike is ok. The Big Ten didn’t provide millions of dollars, just a chance to compete in a top tier conference and all the tie ins and opportunities for the school’s other sports to compete. Look, it’s like those old fashioned looking phones and radios you can buy now that are really push button phones and cd/mp3 player radios. It’s a nice idea, fun to look at, but ultimately it’s still like everything else. And that one sq inch of fabric space looks awfully big when there is nothing around it. There is nothing wrong with it. But it is, what it is and you can’t ignore it.

I would think it would largely be cases where the graphic part of the logo needs to be flipped to face the same way in relation to the helmet, but there is text present that can’t be mirrored. The Chiefs would be an obvious example. I’ve done this on a couple of link link I’ve created or link for personal use. And some designs link both ways…
