Monday Morning Uni Watch

IMG_3188.JPG

Lots of ground to cover today, beginning with the excellent time I had last Friday at Giants Stadium, where I spent the afternoon interviewing equipment director Joe Skiba. This will end up as a video column on ESPN.com later this week, but here are some notable factoids:

• As you can see above, your typical NFL team has a lot — like, a lot — of facemasks on hand. (Here’s a larger view.)

• How tight are NFL jerseys these days? So tight that Osi Umenyiora’s jersey and pads fit fairly comfortably on me. Keep in mind that Osi outweighs me by over 100 pounds. For the record, Jared Lorenzen’s jersey was a big roomier.

• Speaking of Umenyiora, it turns out he likes to have his jersey partially untucked in the back (sort of like Wayne Gretzky), so Skiba has the back of his jersey tailored with a diagonal hem.

• Think the Giants’ blue helmet looks stupid with their red alternate jersey? Skiba has something in mind for you. I’m not allowed to talk about it, because team management hasn’t yet green-lighted Skiba’s idea, but let’s just say it would be a pretty revolutionary move if it came to pass. (And no, it’s not a solid-red helmet.)

• Skiba clued me in to a new footwear regulation I hadn’t been aware of: Prior to this season, a player’s shoes had to be predominantly black or white (depending on the team’s official shoe color) but could be accented with team colors. Since the Giants’ official colors are blue and red, this meant that some players’ shoes were black with red accents and others were black with blue. This year, however, the NFL has required each team to settle on one accent color. The Giants chose red (a mistake, in my opinion), so no more blue-accented cleats for Big Blue.

Big thanks to Joe for taking time out of his busy schedule to make himself available. On top of that, he turned out to be a real character in front of the camera, which should result in a very entertaining video. Joe, if you’re reading this, you da man and all that.

NHL Roundup: Meanwhile, a slew of additional NHL unveilings took place over the weekend. I’m just about NHL’d out (it’s only a 30-team league, but it seems like they’ve trotted out about 387 uniforms over the past two months), but protocol demands a full accounting, so here’s a quick rundown, in roughly descending order of quality:

Coyotes: Plenty to like here — simple, basic, a classic in the making (lots of photos here). The only fly in the ointment: the way the panels and seams have forced the “C” and “A” designations to move too close to the crest.

Blackhawks: Pretty true to the classic version. But this is probably the best example yet of how old-school waistline striping just doesn’t work with Reebok’s new rounded shirttail hem (additional photos here). Which brings up a question: What exactly is the rationale for the rounded hem? For all the chatter about the new uniform system’s innovative fabrics and streamlined tailoring, I’ve yet to hear an explanation for this particular (and particularly annoying) element.

Ducks: As of my last writing, we had only seen this, but now a bunch of practice session photos have surfaced (additional views here). Yeah, the wordmark is weak and the stripes are a joke, but I still like the color scheme and the lack of extraneous bells and whistles. Whatever you thought of last year’s version, this update is certainly no worse.

Stars: I actually love the road uni. And I don’t mind the simplicity of the home design (additional pics here). But like many other observers, I don’t understand why they’re highlighting the city name at home and the team name on the road. Feels like some promising ideas that weren’t taken to full fruition.

Flyers: Road whites are silly but harmless; home design looks like a black tunic (additional pics here). Oh, and according to an item buried on this page, “Privately, some of the players said the new jerseys were too snug. So the Flyers are ordering them two sizes larger than usual for most players.” Nice to know the Edge system is being subverted before the season even starts.

Thrashers: Pointless apron-striping (which has ruined what I once considered the league’s most underrated road jersey) plus the worst left sleeve in sports equals a mess. Additional evidence here.

Oilers: Which one looks more like a practice jersey — home or road? Answer: both.

Sabres: Looked like crap last year; looks like crap this year (further damning evidence here).

Blues: For those who’ve been wondering, this is the design I knew about a few months ago (I got to see one of the jerseys when I was visiting the Liebe factory back in July) but wasn’t at liberty to discuss. Some people in the comments section have said they’re okay with it, which surprises me, because I think it’s a total train wreck. From the idiotic apron strings to the super-annoying Ree-box, it reeks of overdesign — especially when you factor in the way the apron strings are extended on the pants (additional pics here). Embarrassing.

In addition, we now have our first view of the Rangers’ new design on an actual human being. Compare that to this and the new wordmark looks awfully compressed, no? And again, the rounded hemline ruins the non-rounded stripes. I’m starting to think they would’ve been better off going back to the drawing board.

Fuck it, they should all just do this and get it over with.

Raffle-O-Rama: Speaking of the NHL, here’s a little tale that speaks volumes: About 10 days ago I got a note from a PR guy working for the NHL. This wasn’t one the league’s staff publicists — it was a guy from a PR agency that had apparently been retained by the league. He wanted to make sure I knew all about the league’s exciting new uniform system, with its high-tech fabrics and innovative tailoring. Then he asked if I’d like to have one of the jerseys so I could see for myself, and of course I said yes. He didn’t ask which team I preferred, and I didn’t make any special request, but I figured it’d probably be either a Rangers or Islanders jersey — y’know, since I live in New York and all.

A few days later, a package arrived. Can you guess what was inside? Take a look.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful — it was nice gift, after all. But you’ve gotta admit, it takes a special kind of cluelessness to send me a jersey from the one team that features the one color I can’t stand. This kinda sums up everything wrong with the NHL these days, no? (So does this: You’d think a video game would gain its legitimacy from the sport, not the other way around.)

Anyway, I’m gonna raffle off the jersey, and I won’t even make fun of whoever wins it. Specs: Size 52; includes all tagging; blank on the back. And since winning a Kings jersey brings to mind a bunch of old vaudeville jokes (“First prize is a week in Philadelphia; second prize is two weeks in Philadelphia”), I’ll make it more interesting by tossing in some extra goodies: The first prize winner will have a choice of the Kings jersey, a Capitals T-shirt (size L, blank on the back), or a bunch of MLB sleeve patches. A second-place winner will have a choice or the remaining two prizes, and a third-place winner will get the remaining prize.

To enter, send an e-mail to uniraffle at earthlink dot net (please note that this is not the regular Uni Watch address) by this Thursday, September 20th, 10 p.m. eastern. I’ll announce the winners on Friday. I won’t be reading the e-mail entries, so please don’t include messages or attachments. One e-mail per person, but all enrollees in the Uni Watch membership program will automatically get three bonus entries.

pomprowitz.jpg

Speaking of membership, the recent server snafu put a damper on news from that front, but Scott and I have kept working on applications. With two exceptions (hang in there, Joseph Mays and Charlie Hildbold — we’ll get to you soon), every enrollee should now have his or her membership kit. If you haven’t received yours, let me know. And for all you folks who recently told me you were planning to sign up once the server issues were settled, I look forward to receiving your orders.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Nike and Ohio State have struck a huge deal. And it includes some penalties for swoosh obstruction. ”¦ Reprinted from Thursday’s comments: Awesome Yellowknife jersey at the beginning of this photo gallery. ”¦ Good article here about the Astros’ visiting clubhouse manager, who has a huge bobblehead collection (with thanks to James Poisso and Kevin Gee). ”¦ While researching something else, I came across this photo of Paul Hornung wearing a college all-star jersey — apparently the same design shown in that Mitchell and Ness video that Vince linked to last Friday. ”¦ From 1921 through 1951, the Cubs held spring training on Catalina Island, a small island off the California coast that was owned by William Wrigley. Joaquin Jang has provided me with a link to an excellent half-hour video about the Cubbies’ history on the island, and it’s filled with tons of great visuals plus some nice little uni-related factoids (the Cubs used to leave behind their spring training uniforms each year for the island’s high school team to use, e.g.). The only catch is the size of the video file — my computer took over two hours to download it. But it’s worth it, so just start the download before you go to bed or something like that. The link is here. ”¦ AJ Brandt reports that U.S. Airways has been creating a fleet of NFL-themed jets, with liveries honoring the Eagles, Cardinals, Steelers, and Panthers. Not sure if the flight attendants have to dress the part, but I wanna make it clear right now that I’ll travel on a leaky raft before I fly on a Bengals plane. ”¦ Tyler Kepner wrote a nice little item at the bottom of this page about Ian Kennedy’s stirrups. ”¦ The Padres wore 1990s throwbacks on Saturday — the last installment of their season-long throwback program. ”¦ Small uni number switcheroo for the Mets. ”¦ Things have been suspiciously quiet over at Oregon, but Clark Farrand says that may be changing soon: “On the radio pregame show for the Oregon/Fresno State game, they had a guest ‘insider’ (whose name/title I didn’t catch) who said that the white helmets announced last year were ready and that they should be broken out in the next few weeks. Interestingly enough, they were considered for the Michigan game last week, but the team wanted the focus to remain on the game and not have helmet hype overshadow anything.” ”¦ Todd Davis notes that Pitt is now in the unusual position of having the exact same wordmark on its jersey and helmet. ”¦ Interesting note from Alejandro Macri (writing all the way from Buenos Aires), who notes: “The South African rugby national team is using green and yellow mouth protections as part of their uni design. It’s very disturbing to see green and yellow in these men’s teeth, but it may be the beginning of a new trend.” ”¦ Everyone got a kick out of this over the weekend. ”¦ You probably know Jason Varitek has “TEK” printed on his chest protector collar. But did you know he also has it inscribed on his mask? (With thanks to Corey Paske.) ”¦ Also from Corey: This is a shot of Wisconsin hockey coach Mike Eaves. Anyone know what the “SP” tag logo on the jersey is for? ”¦ Garrett Malcolm reports that last week’s Derek Lee bobblehead giveaway at Wrigley Field depicted Lee with a gray underbrim. ”¦ Dave Lewellen notes that Trent Green’s sleeves had stripes for Miami’s Week 1 game against the Redskins, but the rest of the Dolphins were stripe-free. ”¦ Wish I’d been near a TV for Saturday’s Iowa/Iowa State Game. The Cyclones wore gorgeous throwbacks (lots of additional pics here and here), and the Hawkeyes added an “ANF” decal (that’s for “America Needs Farmers,” don’tcha know), much nicer than the one originally worn during the Hayden Frye era (with thanks to Matthew Lepke for the decal screen grab). ”¦ Awesome collection of game-worn hockey jerseys here (with thanks to Joe Hilseberg). ”¦ Advertising on NFL uniforms? It’s already happening, if you count the Vikings’ cheerleaders. ”¦ The Nationals wore a sleeve patch over the weekend to mark their final homestand at RFK Stadium. … Speaking of the Nats, great article here about how the team’s script “W” logo is imprinted onto the outfield grass. ”¦ Attention A.J. Connelly (and anyone else interested in chinstraps): At the 49-second mark of this video there’s a shot of 1942 Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich wearing a really weird chinstrap. Jeff Lindquist, who brought this to my attention, also found another view, though not as good, here. Anyone know more about this? ”¦ Steven Wyder notes that Julio Lugo usually has a light brown smudge on his left sleeve/shoulder area, a phenomenon that dates back to his days with the Dodgers and Devil Rays (tough to see, but it’s there). “I think it’s pine tar — he must rest the bat there in the on-deck circle or something,” says Steven. ”¦ True, I loved striped socks — but I might make an exception for Billy Corgan (disgusting find by Nate Gruz). ”¦ Speaking of non-sports socks: “I live in Calgary,” writes Steve Francis, “and one of the attractions here is the Family of Man statue downtown. As a part of an arts festival currently underway, one of the artists has knit socks around the legs of most of the statues.” Seems more like leg-warmers, actually, but still pretty cool. ”¦ Derek Lowe risked a fine the other day by wearing a red jersey during warm-ups the other day, to signify “no contact.” Details (plus a revelation about Grady Little being cited by MLB’s uni police) toward the end of this page (with thanks to Eric Borer). ”¦ The Bills wore Kevin Everett T-shirts under their jerseys yesterday. The tees will be auctioned off for charity. ”¦ The Steelers wore their throwbacks yesterday — and sure enough, for the first time since Super Bowl XL, Willie Parker was wearing an American flag decal, although it remains to be seen whether it’ll be there on his regular helmet next week. ”¦ LaDainian Tomlinson’s helmet flag, however, was still AWOL. … Another black chinstrap for Chad Johnson yesterday. ”¦ Several readers have noted that the Longhorns have switched their uni numbers screen-printed to tackle twill this season. … Good catch by Jesse Gavin, who spotted Jon Kitna wearing a crucifix necklace yesterday.

I came across this photo of Paul Hornung. Not sure what jersey that is – might be from an early Pro Bowl, but Hornung looks really young there. Could it be some sort of college all-star uni?

Yes. The College All-Star Game used to be played every summer at Soldier Field between the defending NFL Champions and an all-star team made up of newly-graduated ex-college players.

Say it ain’t so. One less member of the “correct” baseball pant wearing brigade…Ryan Garko of the Indians.

    link
(You might need to register to see the item, it’s at the end of the article.) Sure enough, his pant cuffs were low over the weekend.

“Some people in the comments section have said they’re okay with it, which surprises me, because I think it’s a total train wreck.”

C’mon Paul…I know that most people on this blog will go along with just about anything you say…you don’t have to flaunt how everyone is basically your bitch. It surprises you that people don’t agree with you? I find it refreshing.

SP is a hockey uniform manufacturer out of Quebec. The AHL teams wore SP-branded uniforms from the late 90s up until a few years ago, then switched to Reebok.

That stain on Lugo’s uniform probably is pine tar. One of his batting habits involves reaching across with his right hand and pulling on his left sleeve before every pitch, so the smudge is where he touches the sleeve.

I like the dark Stars jersey, but the white one puts me to sleep. It needs more color–maybe a bigger stripe pattern on the sleeves. I also hate the shoulder patches on the white jersey. I’ve hated it since they came to Dallas, and was really hoping they would use the redesign to come up with something new.

I also agree that I was confused by having “DALLAS” on the home jersey and “STARS” on the road. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

I got my Capitals season tickets in the mail the other day and at one game early this season they are having a “white out” day where they will wear the road whites.

Sad that the PR person sought you out, but didn’t bother to read a freakin’ thing by you. Otherwise, they would have seen your comments about the LA jersey, or maybe have a hint of your feelings towards purple.

Also, US Airways is taking up the tradition started by America West Airlines (which bought/merged with US Airways a couple of years ago). The four NFL teams mentioned are hubs of US Airways. Prior to the merger, there was only a Cards Airplane in the America West Fleet. They’ve also had some based on the Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio flags.

This all started when Southwest started the Shamu planes (followed by some state commemorative ones) some years back.

I like the idea of the NFL-themed jets, but wouldn’t it only make sense to include the, uh, J-E-T-S?

Doesn’t look like there’s a danger of a US Airways Bengals-themed plane. It appears they’re doing teams that call one of their hubs home (which are Philly, Pittsburgh, Charlotte and Phoenix – since they merged with America West). Reagan National is a de facto hub for them, though, so you’d expect a ‘Skins livery (unless there was concern about offending Native Americans).

You’re probably safe unless Delta decides to get in on the act (Cincinatti is one of their hubs, right?).

To me the Stars road white jersey should have a slightly larger logo placed further down the chest. Seems like a lot of white space down to the pants and a lot going on up top.

This is purely speculation, but if the NHL switched back to home whites (which I KNOW they’ve said they aren’t, but there is always NEXT YEAR) those Dallas sweaters would make perfect sense.

I agree that dissent and debate are good, and that nobody should agree with anything I say simply because I said it. I’m just surprised sometimes when something that seems obvious to me doesn’t appear obvious to others. I’m sure you’ve sometimes had similar thoughts regarding an opinion of yours.

Also, I believe it’s spelled Umenyiora. I know this because he is one of only two players (I can think of off the top of my head) that have all 5 vowels in their last name. (Gouveia being the other one.)

In the Flyers photo, it seriously looks like Simon Gagne is wearing a black tank top over a white shirt. Very odd.

And what’s up with that weird white area on the back of the Blues home uni? It would be much better (if possible) without it.

Frank Sinkwich’s chin strap was to provide padding for a broken jaw. The helmet is on display at the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall on the UGA campus. If I head to Athens one day besides a game day I will snap a picture.

I loved the phrase “the worst left sleeve in sports”! This is why I read Uniwatch, I mean where else are you gonna get a phrase like that?

Paul, you should come up with a hybrid uni combining all of the worst aspects of parts of uniforms, i.e. the worst cap/helmut, sleeve, hemline etc. We can call it the ultimate train wreck.

I knew I missed something! Good catch.

Glad I wasn’t the only Astros fan to hear the bobblehead story. I just wish there were pictures of the collection.

My god…those facemask shelves are just beautiful. I’ve been obsessed with football facemasks for years, and seeing that up close would be incredible.

I wish I could get in there and just see if they had any spare leftovers from Amani Toomer’s previous facemask, my favorite one of all time. Steal that, paint it and buy a Michigan helmet to put it on and I’d be in heaven.

To you its obvious, but the question is over something TOTALLY based on opinion. I’m surprised when people still like George Bush, cause theres solid fact hes done so much to fuck up our country. But there are no ground rules for what people like in a uniform (although your original point is taken, the people on this blog definitely agree with you most of the time).

Well, I am not Paul’s bitch, but I agree that the Blues’ unis are a train-wreck. The wavy stripes have got to go. In general, wavy stripes are not pleasing to my eye. I hate the Ree-box Edge system in hockey–good thing I get a game a week on my cable-less TV and that I actually like the Wild!’s unis this year.

The Family of Man statue needs to eat a good meal or two. The Steelers throwbacks look much better in pics than they did on TV (to reiterate my point from yesterday).

Kip Whiffle, good point about the J-E-T-S being the perfect team to have its own plane, especially as they are in NY. I wonder why that hasn’t happened yet.

Seeing the Rangers sweater on Chris Drury, it looks like the Kids Medium I had when I was 7 years old.

I could have sworn that LT had the US Flag on his helmet last night, because I remember commenting to one of my friends that it looked stupid because it was overlapping his “bolt” on his helmet. Does anyone have this game recorded or can find a shot of him from earlier in the game? Again, I could be wrong, but I remember making that comment last night and now I see the pic that was posted on here, so it is kind of weird.

    Hey, everyone.

SP held the contract for all minor league teams until Reebok bought the contract for all NHL teams and their AHL affiliates. SP’s jerseys weren’t of the same quality as that of CCM, Nike, Bauer, or Pro Player, but they did the job. I believe they are still outfitting the ECHL teams, as well as some of the NCAA teams (as seen in the picture).

You can check out their website link. They make jerseys for almost every sport.

I don’t think this needs to be posted every day, but I’m beating DW to it.

    A. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wore the odd font numbers on their practice jerseys only.
They are not for regular game use.

    B. The new NFL logo starts NEXT year, in 2008.

    C. The green dot on an NFL players helmet means there’s a radio in the helmet.

    D. If you think you are posting a new jersey here for the first time; no, you are not 99.999% of the time. Somebody has already beat you to it and we are seeing it for the 100th time. Very seldom is there “Breaking News” here in the Comments.

    E. The home NHL jerseys/sweaters this year will be the dark jersey, not the white one. And NHL teams won’t have a third jersey this year.

    F. For Hispanic Tribute Nights around MLB, the Giants wore uniforms with Gigantes on them. The Mets wore Los Mets on theirs, the Rangers wore Los Rangers on theirs and the Brewers became the Cerveceros. The Padres wore camafloge uniforms as a tribute to the military population in San Diego.

    G. The black strip worn by ACC football teams this year is for Virginia Tech.

    H. What was once known as Division I-AA is now The Championship Subdivision.

    I. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will be dropping the “Devil” from the name and the new colors HAVE NOT been officially released yet.

    J. When the Toronto Maple Leafs unveiled their new Reebok uniforms, they also had a player from their AHL affiliate modeling the Toronto Marlies (Marlboroughs) white jersey with the McDonald’s patch. They are owned by the Leafs, and the parent company apparently “bundles” them together for hockey fans.

    K. Numbers are owned and assigned by NASCAR. Teams can request a specific number. No numbers are retired in NASCAR but there are no plans for the #3 (Dale Earnhardt) or the #28 (Davey Allison/Texaco/Robert Yates Racing) to be used.

I have a game-worn college basketball jersey (from a team sponsored by adidas) but the tag also has a different manufacturers name on it. I can’t remember who it is though, but this seems to be a fairly common practice.

If you scroll through the Flyers slideshow, you will some great shots of Bernie Parent, wearing classic Flyers ORANGE, which only highlights how stupid the black jerseys look.

I don’t remember this being mentioned but last night it looked like Joe Torre was wearing a pin on the back of his warm up jacket below the MLB insignia.

As mentioned earlier, SP is a maker of hockey jerseys out of Quebec – they make the jerseys for quite a few teams – nothing professionally anymore, unless you count the gong show that is the Quebec Sr. League.

Since adidas doesn’t make hockey jerseys per se, I imagine that the athletic dept went with them. Funny that the material of the jerseys they produce are an awful lot like the old Bauer Flo-Knit. I wonder if they were spun off once Nike went to the Swift jerseys

Nice list…perhaps Paul would be kind enough to develop another FAQ section that deals with the topic for the site (uniforms) and not for the site itself.

Oh, and I forgot to add:

As much as it pains me to admit it, the black Flyers uniforms look horrid, especially with the black pants. The jerseys look like women’s tank tops over long-sleeved shirts–not a good look on anyone, much less a hockey player.

Plus, I like the Giants’ choice of red accents with their black shoes rather than blue accents, but that’s only because I like red better than blue.

Don’t forget America West’s link plane.
Southwest Airlines had a whole line of NBA planes a couple years ago; I remember riding on one. The overhead bins had team logos; the plane was really ugly…

And not to be overly nitpicky, but isn’t John Kitna wearing a simple cross necklace and not a crucifix? It’s kind of small, so it’s hard to see; I’m not 100% sure from just that picture. The difference is that a crucifix has a cross with the body of Christ still on it, and is more common among Catholics, while Protestants generally shy away from the crucifix and wear just an empty cross. I don’t think Kitna’s Catholic, but I could be wrong.

Didn’t like the new Blues duds at first, but seeing them in person on Saturday, they are starting to grow on me. My least favorite part is the vertical yellow stripe though, I agree that should go. It would improve the jersey a bunch.

I noticed the brown smudge on Julio Lugo’s jersey a few weeks ago when I was sitting behind the Red Sox’s dugout in Chicago. When he is in the on deck circle, he takes pronounced warm up swings that end with him hitting his shoulder. I assume he has pine tar far enough up the bat where it comes into contact with his shoulder.

On a side note, I noticed back in July at a Brewers game that the 80’s era Brewers logo on Damian Miller’s left sleeve was rotated clockwise about 30 to 45 degrees. I thought this was an error until I noticed one of the Pirates’ catchers in a game against the Cubs with the same logo rotation on his left sleeve (they were wearing the vests, so the logo was on the undershirt). Is this standard so that when the catcher is in the crouch position the logo appears more level?

Casey: right on. A crucifix is a cross with a corpus on it (in christianity, it’s usually the cross with the crucified Jesus on it). What Kitna is wearing is just a cross as it has no corpus on it.

Thank you. Nothing has annoyed me more, on this site, over the past week or 2.

Surely I am not the only one hoping that the Steelers plane has the logo only on one side of the tail wing. How sweet would that be?

Southwest Airlines used to let its employees wear NFL jerseys and other apparel on Sundays during the season… Not sure if its still the case though.

Cant wait for the video’s from the Giants Locker Room!!!! BTW I know this is blasphemy, but I’m kinda excited about the Oregon white helmets. When I saw them in all white against Michigan I was hoping that they’d break out the white. As much as it sucks I’d still be cool to see them SHAKE-IT-UP!!!!

And I bet the Giants Alternate secret is a red facemask on the blue helmet with blue pants!!!sssshhh!!!

Thanks for including the Ticker item about the Cyclones (Iowa State). Some of those Unis were auctioned off by the Athletic Dept. Winners get the jersey, pants, and helmet. One such set is coming my way.

Some ISU fans want the team to keep wearing the Unis because of the “luck” they brought the Cyclones on Saturday with their win over Iowa, FWIW. All in all, a great weekend for this Cyclone and Uni Watch member.

Damn you Paul!! I can’t watch the NFL anymore without noticing the players wearing shorts. One or two actually were showing bare knees (I think one was a kicker). Sorry, no screen caps and I can’t remember which player/games they were.

I can tell you my area had Ten/Indy and NYG/GB for the early games, NYJ/Bal for the late game, and we got the OT period of Den/Oak.

    – Blackhawks: Pretty true to the classic version. But this is probably the best example yet of how old-school waistline striping just doesn’t work with Reebok’s new rounded shirttail hem (additional photos here).

    Paul,

I would like to mindlessly agree with you. In fact, I don’t even know what your comment was or what it was related to. It could have been about the benefits of killing link and then link for all I know. But I don’t care, because I agree with you, Paul. I agree with you.

PS – Lighten up, Mike. You might have noticed that most of the people are here because they like link, so when Paul trumpets the cause of link, it’s not exactly shocking that there are plenty of folks who see things his way. If this was a linkblog, I wouldn’t be here because I think linksuck. Similarly, link don’t read this blog. Expect plenty of agreement, but please feel free to disagree anytime, and please allow Paul to feel free to disagree anytime, because after all, this isn’t a communist blog, comrade.

Interesting note about Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire. It looks like MLB must have sent out a memo to all managers and coaches after the Terry Francona issue in New York because now Gardenhire is wearing his jersey under his pullover/winder breaker. While looking at older photos as late as August 27th he still had a t-shirt under the pullover. I noticed it with other Twins’ bench coaches as well. Has anyone seen this with other MLB teams?

It has been mentioned by some Blues fans that — especially on the Blue sweater — that the yellow piping outline, when combined with the location of the surname resembles a tombstone….

    and they’re right.

These things are terrible. For all the good JD has done, shame on him for allowing this…

Not sure if it was mentioned over the weekend or not, but the Odessa (TX) Permian Panthers (the school that the book & movie “Friday Night Lights” was based on) wore an “OPD” memorial decal on their helmets to honor 3 Odessa policeman who were killed in the line of duty. Their game was televised on Fox Sports Net.

The Julio Lugo comment is most likely pine tar. Although my assumption is that it is not from resting the bat. Befor every pitch at every at bat Lugo adjusts his left sleeve with his right hand while looking at the pitcher. I am assuming that is when the pine tar is transfered.

He didn’t fire me, he didn’t wonder why he picked a guy that didn’t know as much as he did, he just simply answered my questions.

I think they were talking about the White jerseys with the “Stars” on them. The black “Dallas” jerseys will be worn at home for the 07-08 season. It makes more sense to have “Dallas” on the road, however, thus the comment if the NHL switches to home whites next season, the black “Dallas” jersey will be the road uniform.

    Maybe 1962-1971/2005-2007 ?

If they were trying to be inclusive of baseball, then they should have used more baseball imagery. The Nats have gone a long way in trying to sell the fact that folks ought to say goodbye to RFK. Not RFK baseball operations.

It’s also fairly lame to try and bill it up as some sort of tear-jerker when RFK was always a temporary home for the Nats while their new facility (that they really wanted) was being built.

In regards to the FAQ post:

It’s not so bad when people ask questions about overly covered items, but when someone already asks the question once that day, there shouldn’t be any reason for it to be asked again in the same day. I understand that some people don’t like to read through all the comments, but since this is a Uniform blog, there is pretty good chance the question was answered already. Plus you don’t have to read through everything, a simple Ctrl+F search can be done to find a keyword.

And what I find even worse is when someone asks a question about anything and it gets answered in like the next 5 minutes, and then someone hours later answers the question again. You’re obviously reading the comments already, not reading the the next 5 or 10 down is just being ignorant.

stop me if I sound crazy…

So what’s the deal with Tomlinson’s facemask?
Did he request a facemask that makes him look like Vader?
Does the NFL not have to approve facemask designs before they can be used in games? I’d imagine if they don’t want Chad to wear a black chinstrap (which looks better on a Bengals helmet than a white strap), I’d imagine they wouldn’t want players getting custom facemasks that make them look like Star Wars villains.
I know his facemask was mentioned link, but that focused mostly on the visors, and I think what he’s wearing link looks even more Vaderish than the one he wore in camp.

I posted this last night, but it was late, so I’m reposting-

Ok, not at all uni-related, but more a plea to the uni-watch world; does anyone have access to tickets to the NY Rangers, NJ Devils, Phila Flyers, or Pittsburgh Penguins who would be willing to sell me one game? I reeeeeally want to go see the Stars play one of these teams in Nov., but according to the team websites, I can only get them if I spend a gazillion dollars for lower level tickets cuz the cheap tickets are sold out…I had no idea the NHL had gotten so damn popular. Anyway, let me know!

Here’s the answer to your question about the Frank Sinkwich chinstrap. Click the link and check the paragraph below the voting column.

    link

The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask.
End of story, let’s play nice.

That 40’s chinstrap is gorgeous, I’ve been watching all the episodes of America’s Game recently and I’ve fallen in love with the classic single strap low hook-up version that almost everyone wore back in the day. Notable exceptions being Bart Starr, Len Dawson and Duane Thomas who all wore an early version of the “tighty whitie” chinstrap worn by a lot of players today. Sinkwich’s looks like a standard strap wrapped in tape to pad it, but I could be wrong. I’m heading to NYC in December, budget permitting I might book a cheap flight to Athens, that chinstrap is like my holy grail. Very cool thanks.

As has been mentioned here previously, LDT’s facemask shield is specifically approved by the NFL. The rules are very specific that no player can wear a colored facemask visor without approval. The visors must be clear so that in the event of an injury, medical personnel can see the players eyes (a head injury/concussion specifically). LDT has a light-sensitive condition that causes migraine headaches, and has medical permission from the league to wear the tinted visor. He’s not wearing it for “the look” but rather for a medical condition.
This however is NO EXCUSE for his 1.9 YPC through 2 games.

Agreed, Vince, although snarky can be fun as long as it’s done with a twinkle in one’s eye and the proverbial shit-eating grin plastered to ones face. I would fully support the “FAQ you” response, sending the questioner to the FAQ section. I mean, this isn’t rocket science (translation: Even I can understand uniforms!). The new guys should be able to catch up quickly, especially if a glossary section is provided giving the background on insider items and phrases like “gets it” and “vertically arched.”

    On a happier note:

    Um . . . .Jeditis?

Seriously though, I mis-understood the question. I really didn’t notice anything different about LDT’s facemask, though. Maybe because every time he touched the ball, he ended up buried under a pile of blue jerseys.

Full disclosure..I am a Blues fan. I liked the former unis best, but I am ok with the new ones. But I do not follow lock step with Blues, the sweaters of about 5 or 6 years ago with the diagonal numbers were hideous.

Dallas’ home green sweater, Islanders and Vancouver sweaters are the ugliest and dumbest ideas on the earth. The people who approved those designs should be arrested for toxic eye pollution. Ranks right up there with Bengals jersey’s and Oregan football jerseys (not to mention the Houston Rocket’s stupid look prior to the current style). Ugh!

Rugby-World-New Zealand not the All Blacks for Scotland match

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, Sept 17 (Reuters) – New Zealand players will not be wearing black shirts at a World Cup game for the first time in 12 years when they face Scotland on Sunday but said it would not put them at any disadvantage.

As the home team, Scotland have chosen to wear their traditional dark blue jerseys for the Pool C match at Murrayfield meaning that New Zealand will have to don their silver-grey second strip to avoid a colour clash.

The last time New Zealand wore a non-black jersey at the tournament was against Scotland in the 1995 quarter-finals. Wearing white did not appear to hurt them as they won 48-30.

“We’re still playing for New Zealand and running out with the same guys. I guess it won’t make a difference, but we’ll see,” second row Chris Jack told reporters on Monday.

Prop Tony Woodcock agreed with his team mate.

“It’s still got the silver fern on, that’s the main part,” he said

Actually, people were expressing their dislike for the dark Dallas jerseys hen they were first leaked, long before Paul posted them. We all do have minds of our own, it just so happens that we often agree with Paul. That being said, I see dissenting opinions fairly often here; there are people who like purple, like single color unis, etc…I don’t think agreeing with Paul means we’re blindly following the leader, I think it simply means we agree.

Sadly, I am a big Blues fan, too. I am particularly a fan of the angle design (maybe because that’s what they wore when I started watching hockey?). Heck, my membership card depicts the angled road sweater in honor of my first one. This new one is disastrously hideous. I kept fearing this was the team Paul was hiding from us.

Also, on the “SP” front. The entire USHL (Junior A) wears SP jerseys (with all goalies wearing Reebok pads). In addition, many brands will not make the jerseys and equipment; the teams will have the appropriate logos to affix to them to make it look like the brand actually made it (some exceptions of which I can think: Nike-Bauer, CCM, Koho). I have a pair of NFL Equipment receiver gloves a while back, but the tags inside are from a local glove company: Saranac. I’m assuming that this happens quite often, where specialty companies make the gear to specs and then affixes the appropriate logos.

    Good one, lard-o…

Now that the Patriots have 2 Brady’s after acquiring Kyle Brady in the offseason, I expected Tom Brady to have a T. Brady on the back of his jersey. However, Tom and Kyle’s jerseys both simply say “Brady” Same goes for Adalius Thomas and Dave Thomas of the Pats. What is the NFL’s rule regarding this? I thought they would be required to put their first initial.

Please see my comment, #59, which for some reason took forever to post. It’s related to this whole “UniWatch Zombie” bologna that’s being discussed.

Everyone: lighten up a bit, will ya?

Granted, there are always ways to improve..but compared to what teams of have done, I think the Blues got it better than most.

That’s true… it could be something like NYI, Vancouver or those lopsided Atlanta jerseys that do seem to match their lopsided arena…..

Me, the guy who loves hockey more than anything else and follows it religiously, has not commented on any of the recent jersey unveilings in the NHL on Paul’s blog.

Why? I have my own blog to do that. Agree or disagree with Paul if you like, but do it respectfully. He doesn’t call anyone names when he posts HIS ideas on HIS blog.

If you want to be a loud-mouthed, know-it-all idiot like Mike “I try to come up with ridiculous names to post under to show how cool I am” C. ock, start your own blog by all means. Otherwise, shut up, and stop frequenting this site with your bullcrap and disparaging remarks.

That’s true… it could be something like NYI, Vancouver or those lopsided Atlanta jerseys that do seem to match their lopsided arena

With rare exception, Vancouver seems to have a talent for bad sweaters. Compared to the puke green new sweater and the ugly “V” of about 20 years ago…the color and design from last year would be considered beautiful.

I agree with you on NYI and the Atlanta sweaters…you have to wonder what medication they were on.

All well and good for LT, but there is plenty of time when he is off the field with the helmut off his head. The NFL should investigate.

As for the Blues sweaters, I was surprised that Paul had them at the bottom of his “roughly ordered” list. I mean, I don’t like the yellow stripes either, but the ReeBox is a universal phenomenon (isn’t it?), and the jersey sans yellow stripe is still quite nice.

I’m disappointed they felt the need to copy everyone else with the stripe, but to me it’s still one of the best color schemes out there, and the rest of the sweater is tastefully done (e.g., no wavy stripes or stupid fonts).

Yeah, look link specifically at the five vertical bars in front of his mouth. That’s what makes it look like link. You won’t see that anywhere in link.

Along these lines, I wouldn’t be surprised if instead of an American flag showing up on his helmet, he puts one of link symbols on it…proving once and for all that the reason he refuses to have an American flag on his helmet is because his true allegiance lies with the link.
Nice to think LT is a Star Wars fan…

On a separate note, did anyone notice yesterday that DeAngelo Hall was wearing a tinted visor? No pic, though.

If true, the League should respond. It has long been alleged that players get their doctors to write prescriptions for the tinted visor so they can wear it not out of medical need but because they like the look (and hiding their eyes can bring a competitive advantage).

Jim McMahon wore sunglasses everywhere because of his eye problem. Should be pretty easy to determine if LDT has a similar issue.

I actually really like the Stars home jerseys for the fact that they are so simple. I’m sick of teams these days using so many colors (most of which haven’t been used previously)that the jersey end’s up suffering. A prime example are my Capitals and Bullets (ugh Wizards). They went from simple clean jerseys with great colors (red, white, blue) to awful monstrosities (Copperish, Black, Ugly Blue) with “cutting edge” insignias. The Stars got this right with the exception of not having a tie neck (i’m a fan, what can i say?)

I could be wrong, but the “Ree-Box” Paul is referring to is the alternate colored background underneath the reebok logo on the back, not the logo itself. As seen in the link jersey, the background of the logo is a blue cutout of the white arched stripe. This is the worst version of logo-creep i’ve seen because the logo is actually removing part of the jersey, truly “creeping” where it shouldn’t be.

The link jersey, among others, does not have this alternate colored box behind the logo, just your usual creep level.

I’m alright with a swoosh on the arm or under the neckline…it’s a business and unfortunately it probably won’t change, but to cut out sections of the jersey to insert the logo is going too far.

Someone ought to take the Nationals to task on this patch.

    1. The Nats have played at RFK from 2005-2007. So the designation 1962-2007 doesn’t apply.
    2. RFK will remain in use after baseball is done with it. DC United will remain at RFK for at least a couple of seasons, and MLS Cup will be played at RFK in November. So once again, the 1962-2007 designation does not apply.
The patch doesn’t say ‘Nationals’, it just has the script ‘W’ that was used by both the Nats and the Senators – which I think would also limit the scope of the commemoration to honoring the baseball team, not others that might play there in future seasons…
Although i do agree, using the ‘1962-2007’ designation is pretty lame considering there was no team at all in D.C. for over 30 of those years!

The only reason the Nats are wearing this patch is to help build buzz for the new stadium. They don’t care about the baseball “legacy” of RFK. They just want butts in seats in 2008 at Not-Yet-Bankrupt-Corporate-Sponsor Stadium at We-Got-Extra-Money-From-These-Guys Park.
The first Senators game there was 4/9/62. It seems they are just celebrating (with the creation of a patch) the years RFK hosted baseball games. Even though there was no “home baseball team” there from 1971 through 2005. I don’t think there is any other reason for the creation of this patch other than the fact this baseball season is coming to an end, and the Nationals are leaving.

My question on this subject is: Did the Redskins create any type of special patch for RFK when they left in ’96?

Well stated. It’s one thing to slap a logo on a jersey; it’s another to create a little contrast-colored box for it to reside in. Completely offensive.

Paul… I agree completely about the ‘Ree-box’. Why the Blues agreed to that is simply beyond me.

That said, I have to agree with what Kyle Joecken said. How are the Blues one of the worst jerseys out there? Maybe I’m just relieved, but when you consider that they could have had link I’m ‘okay’ with how they turned out.

actually really like the Stars home jerseys for the fact that they are so simple. As has been pointed out by other, it all boils down with personal likes and dislikes. I agree with you regarding the Copper Wizards uniforms…that made absolutely no sense at all. Terrible looking.

I will respectfully disagree with you on the Dallas home uniforms, it says to me the team could not think of anything creative so they decided to put the name and number on. Makes them look like practice jerseys.

There is a difference between simple and bland. The Canes and Blue Jackets are relatively simple, but classy.

As for the tie neck, it is not worst thing I have seen, just doesn’t do anything for me. It has no real purpose, it is just a fashion string that I think would be annoying because it would always be flapping and hit you in the chin.

It’s not just the jersey (which I don’t care for) — it’s the overall uniform, which includes the completely ridiculous striping on the pants. C’mon, that’s just absurd!

The coach of the Oilers link on the new jersey.

“I’m more of a traditionalist for jerseys … I guess that’s all I can say,” said head coach Craig MacTavish, clearly not a fan. “I think we’re all feeling the same way, aren’t we? I guess the players looked a little sleeker and maybe a little quicker, perceptually, but I like the old ones.”

“I’m alright with a swoosh on the arm or under the neckline…it’s a business and unfortunately it probably won’t change, but to cut out sections of the jersey to insert the logo is going too far.”

The Reebok box in the middle of the white stripe in the back of the Blues’ uniform, taken together with the yellow piping, creates the impression of two hockey sticks.

So, perhaps the Reebox does cut out what would otherwise be solid white line, but was intentionally placed there to create the “stick effect.”

Or am I giving these guys too much credit????

They didn’t wear a special patch for RFK when they left, however, they did wear one the following year for owner Jack Kent Cooke who died before the new stadium he built opened. Far superior look than Panthers, Kings, Sabres, Ducks, Wild’s home jersey (looks like someone is flushing a Christmas tree, but the road sweater is nice), et al.

I hate the Red Wings, but will give them credit for keeping a classic look. Boston did a good job too. Both of those are simple and classy.

It seems like the NHL teams don’t make the cheap seats available until right around game day. I remember trying to order the cheapest Bruins tickets toward the end of last season (at which point they definitely weren’t selling out home games), but the web site said they were sold out. I could only get them at the door.

I’m going to take a few paragraphs to vent about the proceedings of today’s comments. I apologize in advance.

When I first started reading this blog I really didn’t care all that much about uniforms and quirky little details that people notice during games. I still don’t really care about the little details, like when someone’s tag is hanging out or when someone’s decal starts peeling off their helmet. But, as a graphic designer and someone who appreciates well thought out, original thought in any kind of design I started to love just the aspect of uniform design, especially the “classic” stuff. I always read the comments hoping someone would post a link to something that caught my eye and would either further my knowledge of uniform design or uniform history. I ignored all the other little things between the people that seemed to have some sort of bond on here. It wasn’t what I wanted to get into.

But, aside from a few (I won’t name names but I think they would know who they are), the people that have been here for a while and are better informed about the stuff that has some new comers confused have become very impatient and unwelcoming. It’s kind of a snobbish attitude that has been seen all over the internet in chat rooms and message boards and whatever other wierd (to me, I just don’t get it) communities have popped. But, Uniwatch always seemed like a place where people who enjoyed the same thing came and made a few comments, referred a few links and sometimes argued a few points. But it never got into this whole elitist mentality. “I know this and you don’t so why are you wasting my time.” I’ve been really turned off by the whole thing. As a result I’ve been avoiding the comments section most of the time even though it used to be one of my favorite parts of the site because it had stuff you didn’t get in the main post and sometimes that was better stuff than Paul’s posting.

Basically this is going somewhere but not very fast so I’ll wrap it up. If you don’t want to help the newbies don’t, ignore them and move on with the posting. If you feel the need to welcome them and pass on the information they are looking for go for it, more power to you. If you really have a big problem with this a feel the need to belittle people that aren’t quite as familiar with up to date uniform news, well there’s nothing I can do about that except to ask you to show more judgment and have some manners when it comes to it. Say something like, this has been covered before, you can check out some more information [here], rather than making a big long condescending list.

(Sidenote: I am just as opinionated as the next person and have no problem with the political arguments that have popped up here from time to time (as long as they are somewhat uni-related i.e. Redskins, LT’s flag, etc) but people really need to respect other people’s opinions. Nobody’s opinion is fact but it seems like people take to much offense sometimes.)

In closing, does anyone else think the BC Eagles have looks marvelous this year? The white pants are really an improvement if you ask me.

There’s no black on the Blues’ jerseys. It is navy blue, check your monitor settings.

I was in Pittsburgh last weekend for the Cubs 3 game series and the sports shop across the street from the stadium had plenty of Cubs stuff. I saw this T-shirt and loved the simplicity of it except for one thing…can you link ?! I mean Jeez, a logo is one thing, but this is a textured sewn on patch smack dab in the middle of the t-shirt. After I determined that I wouldn’t be able to remove the “patch” without leaving a hole…I left it on the rack.

It’s not just the jersey (which I don’t care for) — it’s the overall uniform, which includes the completely ridiculous striping on the pants. C’mon, that’s just absurd!
Hm… I’m surprised by how much you don’t like it. How did you feel about the link link?

And for the record, I know what the ReeBox is. The fact that Paul gave it a cute little name is testament to the fact that it has infected more than just the Blues sweater.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that alot of people are gonna have the same opinion on alot of the new NHL jerseys. It seems likes there’s about 4 different templates that every team used, and they are all out in left field. All this extra garbage under the sleeves, the aprons, the vertical striping, it’s all new to hardcore (and casual) NHL fans.

I hope the new jerseys all bomb. I think Reebok is behind all of these changes, including these wacky templates of jarbled lines. I don’t know who Reebok think they are trying to reinvent the NHL wheel but I hope it blows up in their face big time.

Of all the problems the NHL has in trying to claim it is a big 4 sport, I don’t remember ANYONE saying “we really need to change the uniforms.”

Logo Creep. When I first read this term in Lukas’ column in ESPN a few years ago I thought I was coming late into an inside joke or character named ‘Logo Creep.’ haha! Somebody should create a character named Logo Creep — An anti-super hero that sucks the life out of sports teams tradition and infuses them with coprporate dollars. Yes! This could be Logo Creep’s father: link

Their home jersey is red, not green. If you mean last season’s home jersey, that was green. :o)

No, I actually mean the “new” home jersey (which was their third jersey last couple of years wasn’t it? At least it looks like it)

You are correct that it is primarily red, but there is green on the side panels and elbows, plus it has the green circle with the logo.

Not to beat a dead horse (too late, I know), but the stripe on the Blues pants could’ve lead to a lot worse.

Like, a link worse. (Credit link for that pic)

Those are the Blues’ AHL affiliate, and their sweaters were released prior to the big league club. Note the similar pants. Those sweaters have so many more Uni-sins — pit stains, BONUS apron striping, half-striped sleeves, a leotard effect on the home unis, etc. I’ll take the NHL version, thanks very much.

Regarding the team jets, I heard there was a movie about the Bengals’ jet.

    It was called “Con Air.”

I’ll give it a try, but for now I’ll have to limit it to the NFL…..

WORST HELMET SHELL: Bengals. Orange is bad enough, but the stripes make them look more like vegetables from outer space than tigers.

WORST HELMET DECAL: Ravens. Don’t know why, but I’ve never liked these. The shape of it just doesn’t fit the helmet very well.

WORST HELMET STRIPING: Panthers. I mean, what is that? Mr. Spock’s eyebrows?

WORST FACEMASK: Patriots. The bright red cage just doesn’t look right against the predominantly navy and silver scheme.

WORST JERSEY DESIGN LAYOUT: So many worthy candidates, but I’ll have to go with the Bills. These are just a mess; they look like they were designed by committee. The inexplicable royal-blue stripe around the shoulder area clinches it.
WORST SLEEVE STRIPING: Falcons. Again, among many worthy candidates.

    WORST NUMERAL FONT: Titans.

    WORST LETTERING: Titans.

    WORST NAMEPLATE: Cardinals.

WORST PANTS STRIPING: Vikings. Don’t know what’s going on there.

WORST PANTS-JERSEY MISMATCH: Bills. Nothing on that uniform matches anything else. They also win the prize for worst helmet-jersey mismatch.

WORST COLOR SCHEME: Dolphins. Adding navy blue really fouled it up. Not that it was so great in the first place; what is this, a Howard Johnson’s?

WORST DOWNGRADE FROM PREVIOUS UNIFORM: Cardinals. Squandered a golden (or, more precisely, copper) opportunity.

WORST CURRENT MODERN ALTERNATIVE TO OUTSTANDING CLASSIC UNIFORM: Chargers (duh).

WORST UNIFORM COMBO WORN NEEDLESSLY INSTEAD OF MUCH MORE APPEALING AND POTENTIALLY EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVE: Seahawks blue-over-blue. Blue-over-white is a really nice uniform.

WORST PSEUDO-RETRO ABERRATION: Giants’ metallic-blue helmet shell. Now that they’ve got the white jerseys right, go back to the plain blue paint and they’ll be perfect.

What’s wrong with a little BS every once in awhile?

I loved the facecage photo but a quick response to someone’s comment above – while there are a number of Riddell original Revo cages there, there’s also at least one of (I’m fairly sure) Schutt’s designs for the Revo – you can tell by the side curve dropping straight down into the back of the mounting link c/w link Where it bends to the front of the mounting. The difference is definitely that between Riddell and (?) Schutt, as I have the Riddell one. There also appear to be a number of DNA cages for those players with absolutely NO taste…

LT’s cage is I guess a new version of the Bulldog, though whether it’ll see general release is another question. I don’t think that cages have to be NFL approved, just meet the relevant standards as there are some very odd ones around that I’ve never seen on any manufacturer’s site.

On the couple of RWC07 points – as well as Brian Habana’s mouthguard with Green and Gold stripes a lot of players now ahve their national flags printed into the plastic. I must admit, I have a Turquoise one as it was the closest match to my Football teams old Dolphins Aqua unis. Also, the tradition of the All-Blacks wearing white change strips goes back a long way and it’s a shame that Adidas have switched it to “ALuminium” which is a made-up color as far as I’m concerned – it’s Grey… I think Scotland chose to stick with our Blue is that the last time the ABs came to Murrayfield during a world cup we wore probably one of the ugliest alternate strips EVER… link

Another little bit on the Mouthguard issue, go link and click on the colours & designs tab… I just hope certain wide-receivers never pick up on the possibilities…

I just noticed this and I have to point it out like the good loyal Iowan that I am: It’s Hayden Fry, not Frye

I think I might have an answer for the rounded hemline on the new Edge jerseys. This is purely speculation by me, but it looks like the higher hips would allow better lateral movement while also running above the hip pads.

They didn’t wear a special patch for RFK when they left, however, they did wear one the following year for owner Jack Kent Cooke who died before the new stadium he built opened. IF i remember it was a top view of the stadium with his name or initials in it. You can kind of see it in this picture.
Kinda surprised no one mentioned that it wasn’t RFK in 1962. It was District of Columbia Stadium until January of 1969.

Bridget Hall, I think? Very nice. (Sort of. I’m a Jets fan.)

First–hockey. It should come as no surprise that I like the Dallas home jerseys, though they should not say Dallas. This pains me because they were once the North Stars.

Second, also hockey. I really like the red Wild! unis and am glad the Wild! chose those for the home jerseys.

Third, Teebz, it is good to see you post multiple times today, but we need more of your hockey your hockey wisdom. I also agree with your post about respecting others and Paul.

Finally, say it isn’t so! As much as I love silver, New Zealand should be mandated to wear link link.

Rugby needs to make that an official rule: “If a team has a color in its name, then said team will wear that color at every match.”

Fixing this mess is so simple.

    link

Get rid of the “UCKS” and make the D much larger…
I again protest any NHL team that spells their name out (Rangers the lone exemption because it is or was so stunningly sharp) instead of going with a crest.

    Easy.

The MLB version (template only, for your consideration):

    WORST CAP DESIGN:

    WORST CROWN/BILL COLOR COMBINATION:

    WORST CAP LOGO:

    WORST NON-VEST JERSEY DESIGN LAYOUT:

    WORST VEST JERSEY DESIGN LAYOUT:

    WORST JERSEY/SLEEVE PIPING:

    WORST HOME JERSEY SCRIPT:

    WORST ROAD JERSEY SCRIPT:

    WORST ROAD UNIFORM BACKGROUND COLOR:

    WORST ALTERNATE JERSEY SCRIPT:

    WORST ALTERNATE JERSEY BACKGROUND COLOR:

    WORST USE OF PINSTRIPES:

    WORST SLEEVE PATCH:

    WORST CAP/JERSEY MISMATCH:

    WORST COLOR SCHEME:

WORST OVERUSE OF OSTENSIBLY “ALTERNATE” UNIFORM WORN AT HOME WITH ROAD CAP, RELEGATING PROPER HOME UNIFORM AND CAP TO RARELY-WORN VIRTUAL OBLIVION:

    I’ll give it a crack:
Worst Cap design:Twins Road- Clunky as can be, and looks worse since they brought back Griffith’s classic TC design.

Worst Crown/Bill Color Combination: Cubs, Road. WHY?

Worst Cap Logo: Indians, for perpetuating racist stereotype.

Worst Non-Vest Design: Diamondbacks, Following Pittsburgh’s idea that every team in town should have the same colors, the number colors are all wrong, and the script will be discussed later.

Worst Vest Design: Indians. See above.

Worst Sleeve Piping: Phillies. Too damn thick.

    Worst Home Script: Diamondbacks (D-Backs)
Paul has already discussed the broken “a”, and how stupid that looks, but D-Backs? D-Backs!? It isn’t even their name. Why not have jerseys that say ‘Stros, Cards, or Phils?

Worst Road Script: Orioles. It should read, “Baltimore”.

Worst Road Background Color: Padres: I get the nod to the troops, but sorry. Khaki don’t make it.

Worst Alternate Jersey Script: D-Backs:See above.

Worst Alternate Background Color: Pirates: The ketchup colored jerseys are nothing short of an assault on the eyes.

Worst use of Pinstripes: Pirates. Not quite as offensive as the ketchup, but just as stupid.

Worst Sleeve Patch: Indians: See above.

Worst Cap/Jersey Mismatch: Mets, whenever the caps are black and the jerseys aren’t.

Worst Color Scheme: Blue Jays: Gray and Black is pretty bad to begin with, but when you have the word, “Blue” in your name, it’s exponentially bad.

    Worst overuse…Yeah, right.

That reminds me of something I’ve been meaning to ask: do most football teams get a whole new set of helmets when doing a throwback game, or are their regular game helmets just painted? It seems to me that some colleges wouldn’t be able to afford a double set of helmets for their unlimited rosters.

College teams may have unlimited practice rosters, but they are limited on how many they can have on the sidelines on game day, and that’s really the only time you need the helmets.

That being said, ISU had brand new helmets for their Throwback game, and those helmets were then auctioned off/sold as part of the uniform package.

I love the Redskins’ burgundy jerseys. I wish they’d wear them more often.
On a totally non-uni related note, ESPN needs to dump Tony Kornheiser and bring in Charles Barkley FULL TIME. Anyone who’s been watching MNF for the past 20 minutes knows EXACTLY what I’m talking about!

    1) There’s something about their current burgundy jerseys that doesn’t look quite right to me. The throwbacks from ’02 looked AWESOME, and I assume this year’s throwbacks will be snazzy as well (right down to the best yellow helmets this side of Green Bay).

    2) Charles Barkley should just have a reality show where he sits in a room and just starts talking. Probably have the best ratings in history because it’d be so ridiculous.

    3) On an earlier point that was being talked about, I really wish the Redskins would move back to RFK, or build a new stadium that is similar to RFK. There’s just something about the FedEx Box that makes me hate it (probably the fact that it has NO character whatsoever). Dan Snyder is known to hate the House that Jack (Kent Cooke) Built, and he appreciates the history behind RFK. Plus, it’d be nice to have the Washington Redskins play in…say…WASHINGTON.

Maybe you should take some other advice:

If you don’t want to read it, skip over it!!!

I could care less if a decal is peeling off a helmet, or if there is a brown stain on Julio Lugo’s jersey ( but really, are these important anyway?). But what do I do? I just pass over it and go on.

I am sure that who ever made the list was just trying to help out.

And, I guess the reason that you are so against it is that you didn’t think of it first.

Both Brendan Ryan and Anthony Reyes for the Cardinals did not show socks/stirrups tonight like they usually do. I couldnt get pics at the game but it threw me off.

Small error on your wrting, a factoid is a piece of information thation is thought to be true but isn’t. Don’t mean to be picky, love the Blog!

Why do the Steelers have the 75th anniversary patch on a throwback jersey? Seems kind of anachronistic.

While the burgundy Redskins jersey does look great, the question is why did the Eagles go with the white jersey’s at home. Was this planned? How many times has this happened before?

The Eagles like to wear white at home to force the Cowboys to wear their blue jerseys. The Eagles do wear white and green at home and even white and white from time to time. At least its better than the black.

I always read the comments hoping someone would post a link to something that caught my eye and would either further my knowledge of uniform design or uniform history…
LT’s (NON-UNI) BLUES ….

There is no excuse for LT’s 1.9 YPC – there is a REASON !!!

There has been no blocking and a horrid QB and OL play that allows 7-8 man fronts. Everybody taking ANY Chargers player on Fantasy Football has been ZONKED due to crummy blocking and almost no passing threat. (Maybe OK with Antonio Gates – maybe)

Can’t wait until the Chargers and my SAINTS finally get on track !!!

Also, while it was horrible watching my SAINTS get shellacked by the Bucs in their shabby block number game jersey fonts – at least the SAINTS looked like a REAL NFL team wearing their GOLD PANTS instead of their Ghetto Thug 7th grade all-star black leotards !!!

God damn’t the new Sharks uniform’s are terrible. I don’t know what it is either. The teal is now…more teal. The shoulders have white piping which looks so horrible in contrast to the Canadiens jerseys.

I don’t like the horizontal stripes on the jersey at ALL. The logo is curved to look fast, these jerseys do not.

And yes, I would much more prefer an “apron”, template than this haphazard attempt at classic.

They are just terrible, and I don’t like looking at them.

Please…go back to the drawing board.

Okay so this is pretty fuckin’ rough butlink of how taking away the black outlines and stripes don’t point out how obviously jacksonville jaguars the sharks uniforms are this year.

The simplicity of it all makes such a big difference.

Yeah, NFL teams have two sets of helmets for throwback games.

SP makes Nike (pre-Swift) and Bauer’s jerseys.

“On an earlier point that was being talked about, I really wish the Redskins would move back to RFK…”

Oh my God…Have you been to RFK lately???? I have been to many, many Nationals games there….And it is a DUMP!

The reason the rest of the Dolphis don’t have stripes on thier jerseys is that the part with the stripes are tucked under thier shoulder pads. The stripes are thier just not visable.

Ugh!

It has been mentioned by some Blues fans that — especially on the Blue sweater — that the yellow piping outline, when combined with the location of the surname resembles a tombstone….

    and they’re right.

These things are terrible. For all the good JD has done, shame on him for allowing this…

As has been noted, adidas doesn’t make hockey equipment, the logo is just affixed to an SP sweater with the SP maple leaf logo not on the sweater at all.

You got it right on about the USHL (I worked for a team there for several years). Last season, teams could choose between any CCM or RBK equipment for skaters and goalies (Rich Bachman was one who wore CCM), but this year it has been standardized for CCM for skaters and RBK for goalies. At first the teams would again have the option, but it was eventually decided to adopt a standard piece of gear like the leagues of the CHL do with RBK and go with all CCM this season.

An example of last year’s Chicago Steel: CCM 1092 helmet with Oakley visors(previously the RBK 8K and Itech HX50 visor in 05-06), RBK 4K breezers (after CCM Pro Tacks the year before) and CCM Pro Tacks gloves for the first half, with Chicago Blackhawks RBK gloves for the second half.

THEN, some players were allowed to wear other gear (Troy Mattila being one in Bauer) based on being an NHL prospect… then all custom patterns for stick blades would be done through Sher-Wood…it became a mess. The standardization to a CCM template will make things much easier this year.

SP had also been pushing for teams to move onto a template from an NHL team last year (Chicago’s Buffalo style and Sioux Falls’ Toronto style being two examples) but this didn’t really fly and is gone now (big props to our old account manager Guylaine up there).

One example of rebranding I have is an old Plymouth Whalers (OHL) sweater. It’s made by Nike but has CCM exterior markings.

I know that this was a week ago, but I would just like to say that the Iowa State throwbacks were indeed gorgeous, and as a lifelong isu fan I can’t fathom how we don’t just keep this look. Also, there is a movement similar to the KU one going on here at ISU over the lack of ‘Cy’ on our new uni’s. The website is at SaveCy.com with 1500 signatures on the petition in a weeks time.
