Uni Watch Exclusive!: C Section

BBreunig (3).jpg

Listen up, boys and girls, for today I bring you a bona fide scoop. It begins with a note I recieved yesterday from a source who checked in with the following: “Word I hear is that the NFL is going to go to Cs on the captains’ jerseys this year, NHL-style. They’re supposedly going to start during the regular season.”

This was news to me, so I checked with an NFL source, who passed along a press release I hadn’t previously seen, dated May 22nd of this year. According to the release, the league’s Player Advisory Council has been developing a “team captain leadership initiative” for this season, designed to “to support and recognize the importance of team leadership through the role of the captains.” Among the measures being considered: “captain identification on game uniforms.”

So are they going ahead with that plan? My NFL source initially indicated that the Cs were pretty much a done deal for this season. “Captains will wear a C on the right chest,” he told me. And what about teams that already have a patch in that spot? “The C will go above the patch.” (I didn’t think to ask about the Broncos, who present some unique challenges for letter placement.) But later in the day he told me that he’d asked a few more people and had now been informed that the Cs were just a “possibility,” although I got the strong sense that they’re, y’know, a strong possibility.

Captaincy designations aren’t so uncommon in the NCAA, but they’re rare in the pros. The last team to employ the C was the 1994 Patriots (here’s another shot), and the only other C-ified team I’m aware of is the 1983 Cowboys, who slapped the C on Danny White, Bob Breunig, Drew Pearson, and Ron Fellows.

Can’t say I’m in love with this idea. For starters, real estate on NFL jerseys is already in short supply, what with the disappearing sleeves, the massive NFL Equipment logo, the increasing use of chest wordmarks, and so on. Adding another element to the mix is gonna make for some seriously crowded jerseys.

And consider this: As we all learned last week, the Red Wings are moving their C and A designations to the other side of the jersey this season, because Reebok’s new tailoring template puts too many seams and fabric panels where the letters would normally appear (for further details, look here). Given that today’s football jerseys are a veritable crazy quilt of stretch panels and seams compared to hockey jerseys, I’m willing to bet right now that the NFL’s newfound embrace of the C — assuming it happens at all — won’t last long.

Research Project Update: A big pat on the back to everyone who responded to yesterday’s call for “one and done” uniforms (i.e., uniforms that were worn just once, or a handful of times, before being abandoned) — my ESPN column tomorrow will be stronger thanks to your efforts. I won’t have room to thank everyone by name within the column itself, but I’ll do so here on this site tomorrow.

Membership News: Very odd development on Monday, as two completely unrelated people both asked for Harlem Globetrotters treatments for their membership cards (you can see one of them at right). This tops the membership program’s previous coincidental oddity, which came a few weeks ago when three consecutive new enrollees asked for No. 17.

Meanwhile, if you’ve signed up for membership, have you checked to see if your name’s on the roster? Here’s why I ask: The current roster listing has 420 names, plus there are two members who’ve asked not to be listed (although their cards are shown in the design gallery), so that’s a total of 422 enrollees. There are 421 designs in the card gallery, plus there are three cards that haven’t yet been designed, so the full gallery would have 424 designs. That means there are two people who I somehow left off the roster. Are you one of them? Let me know.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I meant to list this on Monday, but it fell through the cracks when my computer crashed over the weekend (and by now most of you probably know about it anyway, but just in case…): Iowa State is letting fans vote on a new helmet design for 2008. … Meanwhile, the Fresno Grizzlies are asking for fan input on redesigning the logo (with thanks to Aaron Wiens). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The Blue Jays have added an “SP” memorial patch for former team CEO/chairman Sam Pollock. … The Mets will be wearing Los Mets jerseys this Friday, for Fiesta Latina. … Several people have asked why I haven’t mentioned anything about the Little League World Series. Answer: Because I think the LLWS is bad news. The level of media coverage, the hype, etc. — it’s unhealthy for the kids involved, and arguably even worse for any kid watching it. I’ve written plenty of times about Little League, Pop Warner, and the like, and will continue to do so, but I won’t be party to something like the LLWS. … Nice little piece here about the Brewers’ batting helmets. … Very good article here about players who don’t wear batting gloves. … Just imagine the potential uni-related ramifications of this. … Scotty Johnson reports that dirt late model driver Scott James, who’s from Cincinnati, has a Bengals-themed helmet (and note the “Ocho Tres,” because his car number is 83). … Good catch by Jason Taylor, who notes that Andruw Jones appears to have added an American flag decal to the back of his batting helmet. … Victory Pennants honcho Morris Levin totally kissed my butt wrote some really nice stuff about Uni Watch in his blog yesterday. … Here’s yet another photo of the “8” on Fenway Park’s exterior wall, and in this shot you really can see that the numeral is upside-down (nice job by Matthew Knell). … Merchandise malfunction, as documented by Justine DeCotis: “I work in the team store of the Pawtucket Red Sox. Recently this hat came in with the correct PawSox logo on the front, but on the bill, where it’s supposed to say ‘Pawtucket Red Sox’ on one side and ‘Pawtucket, Rhode Island’ on the other, it says ‘Atlanta Braves.’” … Cardinals punter Scott Player is currently doing an excellent Hulk Hogan impersonation. “Add in his single-bar facemask and the fact his last name is on most prototype jerseys, and Scott’s my new favorite,” writes Eric D.

The “C” wouldn’t work for the Ravens since they have 3 new captains each week. I guess you could sew it on everyone’s uniform but then it would lose its meaning, you know?

Just wondering: anyone think the NFL is going to add “Vick” to the infamous list of words you can’t put on the back of your personalized NFL jersey? After all, Rae Carruth’s name is on the list (but of course, you can still get a Rams jersey with “Rentzel” on it or a Bills jersey with “Simpson” on it).

As I referee, I think the C could make things easier. The captain is the only on-field player allowed to have discussions with the referee. When a penalty flag is thrown, the referee explains the options to the captain (or captains, in the case of 2 separate penalties). This way, you know exactly the player who will decide to accept the penalty or not.
Pardon my ignorance, but are a couple NHL teams unveiling new jerseys today?
I believe the Senators are. I don’t know who else…

I’m in 100% agreement with you about the LLWS, Paul. I tried to watch a game this year, but it just felt wrong, especially with the endless shots of the parents in the stands.

We’re getting closer to the 50th anniversary of the old AFL. I’ve seen some on-line stuff including a pleading letter at link sent in 2005 to the late Lamar Hunt asking for his influence in seeing to it that a special patch adorn the all the NFL unis and if there’d be any chance at the old AFL teams would wear those 1960 unis. Has anyone any knowledge of what if anything the NFL is planning for the anniversary? I can’t imagine them not doing it big since the AFL is such a nostalgic part of football and because of the impact it had on the game we have today. Unis would be an issue for some teams though…would the Tennessee Titans where the old Houston Oiler unis say for a game??? Or would say KC don the Dallas Texan helmets for a game…and what about the Jets…would they become the Titans for a game or two? Interesting questions to ponder…but I gotta say that if this goes down I do sincerely hope that the Broncos will wear those infamous unis with the wild socks!!!!! Let’s hope if the league does do it they do it right and not like some of the screw ups with the throwbacks in ’94.

In Re: LLWS, i caught a game where one team was wearing stirups, but they all had them on backwards …. what is wrong with the parents letting them go out like that?

Also, why “Los Mets”? The mets do not have “The Mets” on their jersey? If anything, they should put Nueva York on the jersey.
I totally agree about the LLWS.
Me too. The media coverage of what should be a little event creeps me out.

I attended Danny Almonte’s infamously tainted LLWS perfect game a few years ago. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to go back to another game after that one.

Hey. So a while ago there was a discussion on sailor’s hats on mascots (I think they were all in college sports). I found link on the Victory Pennants site that Paul linked to. I’ve been a Michigan fan for 20-odd years and I’ve never seen this before. Does anyone know if the pennant site actually copies old team logos or fabricates them themselves based on period designs? In my time as a fan, Michigan hasn’t used an actual wolverine for any of their major sports (granted I don’t go back all that far), let alone a wolverine in a sailor’s hat. Where could this wolverine be sailing to, I wonder? Canada? On the Great Lakes?

    Los Mets = Los Stupidos!

Ok, So the Brewers’ link is sctually cool, and the Giants’ link is ok, but “Los Mets” is just lame!
I totally agree about the LLWS.
Seconded. When I was in little league (way, way back in the day) I was always creeped out by anyone who took it more seriously than a simple game played on the local field in front of some 10-20 parents and siblings.

    Los Calcetines del Blanco?

    Calcetines Blancos!
    Calcetines Blancos!
    Lets Go Calcetines Blancos!

As far as the LLWS, with ESPN broadcasting EVERY game, I agree, that this is not healthy for the kids.

If you think that the ESPN coverage is over-done, you should be in or near a city that has a “team” playing in Williamsport. It is disgusting how the carnivorous media covers these kids.

And what is sad, is that these “teams” are not true “teams” from the various Little Leagues across the world, they are all-star teams, kids picked from all over the league.

I’m pretty sure that Vincent Brown wore a “C” on his jersey when he was the captain of the Patriots in the early 1990’s. Sorry, I don’t have a pic.

The captain’s “C” always reminds me of link “Palehose 6” comic. The White Sox (and every other team) were depicted as pirates for the run of the strip last season. link, they started out as spacemen and have transfigured into a bar band.

ESPN wouldn’t broadcast Little League World Series games if people weren’t watching them.

Is there evidence all the media attention actually harms the kids? What, do they all grow up to become serial killers or something? Geez, guys, lighten up.

The official Spanish White Sox site is loswhitesox.com, so if they did do something like that I suppose they probably wouldn’t translate the words. However, I hope they never do…

Why is MLB having a latino night anyways? I don’t hear of the Latino leagues having ‘American Night’ and have their jerseys in English to make the American players feel better.

I’ve definitely seen the Michigan sailor hat logo before this site put up that pennant. You have to go back a bit, but it was fairly common in the 50’s and 60’s.

People would also tune in to watch a lynching. That doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.

My daughter got issued her very first soccer uniform yesterday. She chose my #4, which makes me a proud Daddy, but OUCH, the jerseys are light peach and dark green, to be worn with black shorts and dark green socks! To make it worse, there is even the standard soccer-style logo creep on the jersey numeral. She’s 5 and already a billboard.

I just tried to put Vick/7 on a falcons jersey and it said :”Your current entry cannot be processed. Some entries are prohibited due to guidelines for past and present player names. Please create a new entry. “

i have a love/hate relationship with little league and the llws.

a love in the sense that i see it as a goal for every kid who suits up to try to play their best to become an all star, and work hard to advance to williamsport to represent their country (or at least their country’s geographic location).

a hate in the sense that i never had an opportunity to play in it no matter how many titles my all star teams won. we often wondered how we would win all of our all star tourneys and then that was it! no advancement to the llws! as players we all watched and hoped that “next year” we’d get there and represent the north east. it wasnt until years later that we all found out that we never had a shot because our league wasnt a member of the little league of america, and we werent members due to high league membership costs. thats how it was explained to me later on.

I think the Twins should have a Canada night for Justin Morneau and make him feel better. Isn’t there a duth player somewher ein the league too? That mans we need a Holland night.

I am all for teams recognizing local populaces. San Diego has military night for an obvious reason, but I’ve been through Brewerville and if they’re going to change the language on their jersey, it should not be to Spanish, but to German. I like how the White Sox have their half way to St. Patty’s Day jerssey as a way to recognize Chicago’s South Side Irish (something I grew up in).

Every community has Spanish speaking folks, but that doesn’t mean the community is predominatly latino, therefore, in my opinion, meaning not every team needs to have their Spanish nights where they change the jersey.

I can’t remember where it is, I think it’s here in Minnesota, but some MLB team throught the season recognizes many different nationalities having Italian night, Irish night, Hmong night and so on, but they don’t change their jerseys on those nights, they simply make reference to it on the jumbotron and there is a noticible influx in fans of that nationality that night.

If teams are going to continue this Spanish thing, I demand Irish jerseys with team names in Galic darn it.

totally agree with you on LLWS, i have always hated it. from the crying kids to the annoying parents, i was at a bar the other day and they had it on so i watched some of it, for one almost every kid hits a homerun and every time one does the entire team comes out of the dugout to mob him like he just hit a walk off in game 7 of the WS, hey kid its the first inning of the regional game get a grip! also its just bad sloppy baseball, yuk. and since its on tv its fair game so i won’t lighten up.

and stuby i feel bad for your daughter, peach and dark green? yikes! i think that should be one time for the parent to step in a youth league and put a stop to it.

I’m not surprised you can’t get a Vick jersey; when the indictments came down a few weeks, ago, my wife (who works the order phones for a large Internet sports retailer) said the order went out – no taking orders for Vick merchandise; they wouldn’t sell it.

(BTW, there was a story on a Georgia station that the Atlanta animal shelter is getting a ton of donations of Vick jerseys and T-shirts that they’re using for towels, cleaning rags and the like.)

Peopole are always screaming for “good news” in the media. Many see the LLWS as good news. The kids are clean and well-scrubed and doing something “positive.”

What they don’t see are the endless hours and expense some parents go to. They don’t know what damage is being done to 11-year-olds throwing curve balls.

I have two Little Leaguers only because that’s the only league in our area. If there were something other than AAU (which is just as bad, if not worse), we’d be there.

    Really? That’s surprising.

On the MLB shop, you couldn’t get one of those. Their first two rules of customizing:

    – League player names must match current team rosters and the team for which they currently play
    – Retired player names cannot be printed on the team’s jersey from which they retired
Why is MLB having a latino night anyways? I don’t hear of the Latino leagues having ‘American Night’ and have their jerseys in English to make the American players feel better.
I hope you’re joking, because it seems really obvious that “Latino Night” has nothing to do with making the players feel better and everything to do with trying to expand the Latino fanbase.

The official Spanish White Sox site is loswhitesox.com, so if they did do something like that I suppose they probably wouldn’t translate the words. However, I hope they never do…

When they made the effort to translate, “White Sox” became “Las Medias Blancas.” The Sox now have a weekly program on one of the Spanish language stations titled “Orgullo Sox” (Sox Pride), so they may no longer feel the need to translate the name.

I disagree, ESPN pretty much broadcasts anything they want, regardless if people watch it or not. Actually, I believe they try to force-feed sports to us that normally people don’t care about (i.e. Arena Football, Darts, Bowling, and the LLWS).

As far as the kids, yes, they all grow up to be serial killers, its a fact!

I don’t really think it’s a bad thing to have the kids on TV for the Little League, but what I don’t like is just the way ESPN covers it. With all the highlights, action shots, zoom in fist-pumps, etc. it just makes it seem over-the-top. Who is actually going, “Ohhhh damn! That’s aweeeesome!”? besides 10 year olds?

It’ll be like if ESPN ever covered one of those 1895 baseball games and there were highlights every inning set to the tone of the latest Black Eyed Peas single. It just doesn’t work in my opinion.

If you think it is bad enough having it broadcast on ESPN every waking second it is on, try living in the town where it actually happens (South Williamsport, PA) The influx of tourists from all over the world and country who think they are better than everyone else because of the fact their little kid and a bunch of kids like them get to play at some glorified stadium, the traffic and the fact that they can’t get the damned borough name right. It’s insane. Alright enough for that rant on the LLWS…

I think the C on the NFL jerseys isn’t a good idea. It would look too out of place. It would be like adding a facemask to all major league batting helmets (like they do in the LLWS).

But you can get an Atlanta Falcons jersey #7 with CONVICKTED.

I’m not a big fan of the LLWS, but not because of the hype surrounding it and the coverage of it.

I don’t like it because of the rules. The pitching distance and base distance is way too short. No stealing or leading off is stupid, and not being able to run on a passed ball third strike is dumb. The fact that these are All Star teams irks me, too.

When I was 12, we played AABC santioned ball. The rules were very similar to MLB, but the bases and pitching distance were shorter (but not as short as the LLWS). There were many teams in the leagues I played in and my younger brother played in that seemed to be better than these all star teams in the LLWS.

Also, RE: curve balls being thrown by pitchers. There is a good chance that they are throwing “slip” pitches. I used to throw one of those when I was 12, and it would curve, but there was no breaking of the wrist, so it was no more taxing on my arm than throwing a fastball.

    That’s not link.

i think readers here can manage to criticize anything. the llws kids are just that… kids (except for almonte, but that seems isolated) who aren’t playing for money or endorsements. they’re playing because they love baseball. they’re 12 years old, so please don’t blame them for not being major league talent. and at this stage this is the most important thing.

it’s great to see a whole team get excited for a home run. these kids have been playing through tons of rounds (much more than mlb playoffs) so every moment in the llws is awesome. And wasn’t that game saving catch on a possible walkoff not one of the best sports moments you’ve seen in a while?

the llws is great becuase it gets to the root of why we love sports, no money, just the glory. let these kids have their day in the sun.

The kids aren’t the problem with the LLWS, it’s everyone else. The kids are pawns of overly aggressive parents and a TV network looking to fill airtime in a traditionally poor TV sports month. It wasn’t long ago when only the final game was shown on TV. Now we need REGIONAL games? Please. This is just ESPN turning its hype machine to something else to cram down our throats (like the aforementioned poker, Arena Football, etc.).

Although even if it was the greatest thing ever, holy crap those uniforms are AWFUL.

You are 100% correct. He only escaped the LLWS serial killer syndrome (aka “The Little League Loonies”) because the hockey gods knew of his great potential and saved him from a damning fate. However, now that he signed with the Rangers I have to watch him 8 times a year (the good), possibly helping win some games against by beloved Pens (the bad). Here is evidence of a LLWS player who came down with the Little League Loonies (link).
My son joined a new challenge club this year and got his uniforms last week. They match the Elon University colors of maroon and white, since they pair up for coaching and such, but yeah, the little swoosh was right there on the front. *eyeroll*

Sorry about the colors though…peach and green? Ouch.

Regarding the LLWS. I like the games on TV, what I don’t like is the overhype of it all. Let the games and the kids have their charm. Let them wear their normal LL uniforms, not some lame generic uni.

If the Mets win the NL east, do they ditch their uniforms for ones that read “NL East”? The wildcard winners “NL Wildcard”? Does the World Series pit two teams wearing “American League Champions” vs. “National League Champions”?

ESPN needs to air things like regional LLWS games because they think we actualy care abotu them. the truth is I watch when I was a kid because they were kids my own age. I watch in college becasue it was something on TV while I had nothing to do. Now that I am grown and have a life, I barely know who is playing. I only know there is a team from Coon Rapids, MN because it was in the newspaper up here.

They air high school football and basketball games because the NHL went to the darn VS network where nobody can watch them. I hope the NHL and ESPN realize how much they need each other.

The Cubs are usually referred to as Los Cachorros in the Spanish media.

Possibly a bit late as an addition to the “One and Done” list, but thought I might as well add it anyway.
Manchester United wore a one off kit for the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final against Barcelona. Their home kit was the traditional red, and their away kit that season had been blue both of which feature on Barca’s kit, so United wore an link for the final. Of course, link, which rendered the whole thing pointless, but it was link.

I’m totoally with you on the LLWS thing but it is refreshing to watch sometimes. Yesterday I had the game between Venezuaela and The Netherlands on. I’m so glad to know there are others who agree with me about the LLWS.

I’ve always hated the LLWS for the same reason I can’t stand reality TV – It’s not reality when there are a dozen cameras running around getting everything on tape and turning regular people into “celebrities.”

My daughter and I were watch the LLWS last night and man, I felt awful for the pitcher who gave up a few runs to lose the game after pitching really well. The poor kid is *12* for pete’s sake. I know that kisd need to learn winning and losing, but the pressure in this seems a bit much.

People would also tune in to watch a lynching. That doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.

But it also doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad thing, either. I don’t think ESPN’s broadcasts of the games changes the kids who are playing in any real way, so why get worked up about ESPN’s broadcasting decisions?

The Pirates have around 8 nationality days. It’s usually always sunday games. Polish day, Italian day, Irish day, Greek day, etc. And yeah, no uniform changes just an acknowledgment throughout the game and stuff like that.

Know anybody at Knockouts that can get a location in Chicagoland?

The Denver Broncos have navy-blue pants that I think have only been worn four times. They look nasty, but I think they came out for a game as recently as 2006, so I don’t know if they count as a one-off jersey item or not. I do think I remember them being worn with the white shirts during the jersey’s first season, though–the Broncos learned their lesson, and since then have paired them with a blue shirt.

Regarding the LLWS. I like the games on TV, what I don’t like is the overhype of it all. Let the games and the kids have their charm. Let them wear their normal LL uniforms, not some lame generic uni.

If they did that, then they could end up with 16 teams all wearing purple.

Hockey is still a major professional sport. There are more professional hockey teams in the state of Texas than in all of Canada, so it’s not like people don’t care about hockey in the US. The lack of exposure that it gets through the only major sports network in the US is a major reason why it hasn’t moved from 4th place out of the four major professional leagues.

I agree with a lot of the things in that blog but if I had to add to that I’d say return the NBA to NBC…watching a game or pregame show on ESPN/ABC is painful. The NBA on NBC wasn’t always perfect but it was a hell of a lot better than anything ESPN/ABC has done with the one exception being Bill Walton. I used to hate him but now I have grown to love his dumb comments and his catch phrases: Throw it down big man and play some deeeefense. lol.

No need for that – ESPN sacked Theismann – Ron Jaworski is in the booth this year with Tirico and Corn-holio (I meant Kornheiser).

While I agree that the NHL needs ESPN, they also need to turn a profit. Versus outbid “the Worldwide Leader” to carry the games. As a businessman, what decision would you make – money, or a promise of something better when there’s no guarantee that it will be better?
The thing is, like I was sort of saying, the NHL and hockey needs ESPN more than ESPN needs hockey. Further, with the Disney/ABC empire backing it, ESPN doesn’t need to turn a profit on their broadcasting and therefore doesn’t need to do all it can to gain ratings. As for hockey itself, as long as it still has owners of teams, say the Blackhawks, who won’t put games on TV because no one would pay to go to the game if its on tv for free, it won’t get any respect from any media outlets, local or national. Combine that with hockey being great in person, and hard to watch on tv, in my opinion, and we are where we are.

has anyone thought that since EVERY 8 in and around Fenway seems to be upside down that maybe, just maybe, thats how its supposed to look with the Red Sox font?

I agreed with you untill you got to the Blackhawks part. With owners like David Glass (KC Royals), Carl Pohlad (MN Twins), Jeffrey Loria (FL Marlins) and others you would think that Baseball was doing horrible as well. But sometimes it’s about more than what’s on the field/ice. MLB has their act together when it comes to marketing and the NHL doesn’t. Sometimes it’s just that simple.MLB

Aside from Wirtz being a total putz when it comes to his fanbase (show the road games, you idiot!), the NHL on NBC shows regional games for free. The problem is that the NHL is basically doing that for nothing. They need some sort of hockey show on ESPN that addresses the people who are fringe fans – one that explains the rules like icing and offsides while still being comprehensive enough to attract the die-hards with some quality programming.

My wife makes frivolous purchases all the time and when I ask about them I’m told not to worry about it, that it’s none of my business, but if I buy lunch at work for myself I get the second degree and am asked to present a receipt. I’ve even been chastised for buying gas when my tank was on E and I only drive to and from work.

Its harder to watch on tv for people who aren’t intimately familiar with it. I’m from NC and there was no hockey when I was a kid. I started watching in 94 when the Rangers won the Cup. Once I started going to games more frequently I noticed a TON of stuff that you don’t see on TV. Passing lanes, offensive/defensive plays, etc. Maybe if Ron Jaworski would freeze frame a power play or outlet pass instead of the I formation people here would get it. Such a beautiful sport with such a grand history and it gets no respect. It sucks.

Leave the “C” to hockey. There’s historic precendent yes, but it just doesn’t “fit”.

interesting argument on the subject of personalizing a jersey and whats acceptable or not.

a few years back, i was all set to order a personal #4 authentic penn state jersey from the eastbay catalog. (similar to the personalization process seen link on their website)

during the order, the representative asked what name i wanted on the back.

i said none, penn state doesnt list names on the back of their jerseys.

the rep said that i had to get a name, that it was mandatory.

i asked how anything could be mandatory when its a personalized item for me.

the rep stated that due to ncaa, eastbay, and manufacturer regulations, all team jerseys which were able to be personalized (like the ones listed at the bottom of the above link) must be issued with a name on the back, because if your were to get a blank one, you could get any number of derogatory remarks put on the back after purchase.

after being dumfounded for about 10 seconds, i had asked why on the very next page of the catalog i had been looking at, a listing of about 50 different college jerseys were available for purchase each with no name on the back (similar to link on the website). couldnt i do what you just described with those jerseys?

there was silence on the other line, a request to hold, and a return with, im sorry sir, we just cant.

so i never got my jersey…

I love hockey. I have no problem watching on TV, because I know what I’m looking for. My wife…she doesn’t. She doesn’t see the umbrella on the power-play…or the passing lanes…or the icing. (And this is a woman with a fairly high sports IQ. She’ll call for the play-action at the right time, or scream “3 SECONDS!” while watching a basketball game. She know’s sports pretty well…she just can’t pick up some of hockey’s nuances.)

But when I play NHL on my X-box, she sees it better…because I use the classic ICE camera angle. One way to make the NHL more friendly to the casual viewer is to use the same SKY CAM that the NFL uses…and keep the viewer just behind the action…with a medium, on-ice view. Let the people see plays develop. See what that does.

I suggested this to Ted Leonsis (Caps owner) who answers fan e-mail. Basically got the “it’ll cost too much” answer. Yeah…might cost a little bit…but you could re-define the way people see the game, and catch more viewers…a “worth it” expense!

Excellent suggestion, Dan. If the NHL can dish out millions of dollars for high-def cameras so they can see every angle of the puck crossing the line, someone should see the light on this one.

Unfortunately, the networks are the ones who introduce the technology for their coverages, and none of them think this through very far.

The networks dictate for the national coverage…but for the local broadcasts, it generally rests with regional cable. Comcast Sports Net, NESN, Sunshine Network, etc…in a lot of those cases, the team partners with the cable net-let on production…so the NHL, via the teams, could make this a regular staple of coverage.

a few years back, i was all set to order a personal #4 authentic penn state jersey from the eastbay catalog.

And that is why nobody should ever buy a personalized jersey online. It’s the biggest rip off in the world…find a reputable local shop and get them to help you out with it.

Two nights ago I was eating at a restaurant that I’ll be reviewing. Since I was reviewing it, I ordered four or five entrees for the table (even though we were just a party of three). Every entree came with a choice of two sides, so we were entitled to 10 sides — way too many, since there were only six sides to choose from anyway. So I said, “Just bring us one each of the six sides you have on the menu, and we’ll do without the other four.”

To which the waitress replied, “No, you HAVE to order all the sides. The computer won’t let me exit the ordering screen unless I punch in two sides for each entree.”

I’m fairly certain that examples like this one and Todd’s jersey experience say something about us as a society. I’m also fairly certain that I’m going to have fun writing this particular restaurant review.

what i had left out of my story was the discussion on how personalization was to be put on the jersey.

whether it was screen printed on or sewn on.

while the rep had someone gathering the answer, she said what were you looking to have put on it.

i said, no name or word, just a period (.) because it would be the easiest way to get the jersey within the regs, and depending on how it was affixed, it would have been the easiest to remove because its small and there wouldnt be too much damage to the shirt after removal.

the rep then said sorry, no periods, slashes, dashes, etc, etc. i said, ok, how bout the letter “I” (i thought that has to be the next easiest, right?)

wrong. all personalization text (or names) had to be at minimum, 2 letters, which was due to that being the shortest a last name could be.

what a waste of 15 minutes that whole project was…

Ughh. Reebok does NOT understand sportswear design and that’s their business. Brutal.

i don’t get it. the nhl and rbk are trying for this ultra-modern superfuture jerseys, with vertical stripes and mega speeds…

but this is the third team (that i can think of) to have a special throwback patch on the shoulders. first vancouver, then boston, now ottawa…why? seriously, throwing a small patch of historical significance onto an ungodly mess of fabric that can never be called a sweater is just a slap in the face of history

I’ve been thinking about whether or not I should admit this…but is it a bad thing that I really want there to be a uniwatch conference in NYC soon because I’ve got a sweet jersey I really want to show to people who appreciate that sort of thing? Does this make me lame or exactly the sort of person uniwatch appeals to? Or Both?

In reference to the new Sens unis, I definitely like the horizontal stripes on the pants. IMHO, too few NHL teams have those anymore.

Just wondering, are the New Jersey Devils changing their uniforms this season? It would make sense with the new reebok design, plus going into their new arena this season.

anyone know the link to the slideshow from a little while ago with all the wacky minor league hockey sweaters?

I’ve been looking for the link on here for like an hour now with no luck. :>
link.

We’ve all noticed the rbk edge design is struggling with hockey’s signature look: the horizontal stripe..

I’m assuming the OHL will do the edge the following season, which begs the question.. How many MIT engineers will it take to design the traditionallinksweater?

As far as the Portland Beavers go, I like the Sockeyes the best, with the Wet Sox coming in second. Their reasoning for Green Sox reminds me of a South Park episode where everyone drives hybrids and cause a “smug” cloud. It’s too elitist.

Well when you put it on a jersey of a team/school that owns the rights to their name, likeness, etc., it is no longer public domain. You can put Arizona on a shirt that you make (as long as it infringes on no ones copyrights), but they don’t have to allow you to put it on their product.

i heard that lou has refused to use the rbk edge jerseys.

if so, i’ll have to become a devils fan (that really hursts to say), but i don’t know if they strongarmed him into accepting them or not, afterall, that was a while ago and i haven’t heard since.

by the way, wasn’t the switch unanimously voted down by the owners last year? how do 16+ people change their mind in one season?

I hope they make some changes to their uni. the logo is classy but the rest of the sweater is ho-hum. Plus it will give me another resason to replace my Gomez jersey

Not uni-related, although a few Orioles pitchers might burn theirs after today-

    Rangers 30, Orioles 3.

    You read that score right.

They wore this style jersey it appears from 1960 through 1964 although I cannot confirm what year the Cowpoke used this very unique collar?
Actually, the Cowboys wore the shoulder-star jerseys from 1960 through 1963. They went to the original version of their current look in 1964, but with three stripes. 1966 saw the two-stripe look they have today, although the silver-green pants they wear now look nowhere near as good as the old metallic light blues from the late 60s/early 70s. I hope they remedy this by the time the new stadium opens in 2009.

    thanks, boss man.

I like the Senators shoulder patch, but man, those jerseys are brutal. Those look like the tightest of the new jerseys and the blank hemline is not helping matters.

Cubs announcer Bob Brenley suggested that shoe cutting and alterations happen in baseball as well. After Benjie Molina was hit in the toe with a foul ball, and Brenley being a former catcher, the subject came up about how painful that is, and that with the swelling of the big toe, you sometimes need to cut a hole in the toe of the shoe to give extra room to the swollen toe.

Pete, I was just putting the finishing touches on tomorrow’s entry, and the last thing I wrote was almost word-for-word what you wrote in your comment. When you read tomorrow’s entry, you’ll think I was ripping you off, but honest, it was just two great minds thinking alike and all that…

So… I guess if the St. Louis Cardinals joined this trend, they’d trot out jerseys with their 1967-68 nickname, link? (Yes, I know it should be “Los Birdos”; nobody pointed out that goof in 1967!) Since the Mets keep insisting that their name isn’t a contraction of “Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York”, I guess “Met” is the same in English, Spanish, German, and/or Mandarin Chinese!
The Mets have never insisted any such thing. Quite the opposite, in fact.

The Mets have made it clear that the team name is not, and has never been, the “Metropolitans.” Big difference.

This is in response to #13, Josh –

I run VictoryPennants.com. We use original logos for all of our pennants. We do not fabricate any of them or make them up. Our goal is to match the historical logo with the precise year of the championship. I know we have a couple errors that we will correct, for example, the 1945 Army. The logo is real and was used – and I am told it was not used in ’45. The Michigan Wolverine logo is real and I have seen them on original period pennants.

If you have any ideas for new pennants – or have a correction, I would love to hear about it!

Because, if you can imagine, these jerseys used to be WORSE. For starters, the original plan was to have all jerseys tucked into the pants.

I was browsing the net tonight and came across this site: link. It highlights the throwback jerseys worn by the NFL during it’s 75th anniversary.

Note that the Old Chargers unis (Circa 1961) look very similar to the new style they are using this season.

and numbers on the pants, and one of 10 templates, none of which had horizontal stripes…still, 16 people said “oh, this is a good idea now”? i seriously want to know who was coercing who at those meetings…and can it work at the UN?

Just a heads up on RBK and perhaps why they seem to have their way with re-design in the NHL and NFL. Apparently when REEBOK courted these leagues they were enduring some pretty desperate times and re-invented themselves. They offered the leagues (NBA too) a 5% ownership in the company with their offer to outfit the leagues over a the long term. Both Leagues understand the role of profits I suppose and understand that fans will be fans no matter how ugly change may get. People don’t like wearing unnofficial stuff so many will go out and purchase new jerseys and apparel no matter what. It’s part of the fan experience and they will profit from it. My point is both leagues are happy to let REEBOK tweak their shit into the ground because they’ll profit form it now and later when change is once again needed. On the hockey side of things the bad style ties in with the bad teeth and hair anyways.

That site has been linked over there on the right side of this page for as long as I can remember. There really are some cool things over there

I’m positive I could create all three of ISU’s new helmet designs in photoshop in under 2 minutes.

Is there evidence all the media attention actually harms the kids? What, do they all grow up to become serial killers or something? Geez, guys, lighten up.

Mike, I (and plenty others) happen to love bowling and watch it regularly on ESPN. Just because YOU don’t happen to enjoy it doesn’t mean there’s not a great many that do.

It’s always been this way. The teams that go to the LLWS are always the district all-star team from that little league. they’re not a travel team, but they are the best players that year in LL in that town. I played on one of those teams and almost went to the LLWS.
