Most of you know that I live in Cleveland, and that I tend to mention Cleveland sports every once in a great while. And at the risk of sounding like a complete homer, and even though the Spurs closed out the series last night, I wanted to dedicate an entry to one of the cooler uni-centric stories that came out of the NBA playoffs and finals — and it just happens to concern the Cavs.

A few weeks ago I sent a note to Paul mentioning that the Cavs had hung some huge jerseys from the Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland. According to the story, they were 35′ x 25′, weighed 102 pounds each, and had “Rise Up” on the nameplates. Decent enough Ticker fodder, but nothing earthshaking, right?

But then I started to think more about the background of the jerseys. Who had the idea? How long did they take to make? How do you go about making absurdly huge jerseys? Are they exact replicas? So I got in touch with Michael Thom, Director of Merchandising for the Cavs, and he was gracious enough to explain exactly how these huge jerseys came to be.

Apparently, the display was the result of a marketing brainstorm on how to take the “Rise Up” campaign (which has been this postseason’s marketing slogan) to the public. The first thought was to drape various statues around the city with oversized jerseys, an idea Thom said came from a similar marketing campaign done by Adidas for the NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas. But they decided that Cleveland’s statues were too widely dispersed across the city in nooks and crannies — they wanted a more prominent location.

The Terminal Tower, situated directly across from the arena, was an obvious choice for its size and prominence in the city’s history. After the location was set, the four huge jerseys went from concept to production to installation (the latter of which, incidentally, was the most costly step in the process) in just under two weeks, and were launched with a celebration on April 20. (In addition, they made a inflatable 15-foot version, which was featured at a fanfest and then was placed next to the arena for fans to sign.) They hang from the 37th to the 34th floors, so unless you work on a high floor of an adjacent building or have a good set of binoculars handy, this is what they look like.

But Thom was kind enough to pass on some great photos of the huge jerseys lying on the ground at Action Sports America (a company that apparently specializes in making big jerseys) just after they were finished being put together. Additional views here and here.

These photos helped answer my big question: Are they exact replicas? The answer, of course, is no. The navy alternates don’t have the same side paneling and detail as the real jerseys. Even the Adidas guide for retailing the replica jerseys has the same mistake. Thom lamented that since everything had to be done in under two weeks, and materials and sewing time were at a premium, some things couldn’t be reproduced exactly. Unsurprisingly, however, the Adidas logo is nice and noticeable.

One of the few questions that Thom couldn’t answer (in addition to: What size do you think the jerseys are?) was where the jerseys would end up once they’re taken down. Because of their size, no real good suggestions have emerged for preserving them for posterity, although he did say they will obviously need to be dried out and cleaned. Any Cavs fans have a 35-foot-high room in their house that needs some unique décor?

Membership Update: Paul here (thanks for handling the lead entry today, Vince), with the latest membership news. If your uniform number is clickable on the membership roster, your card has been mailed out — I’d think many if not most of you should be receiving them by now. For those whose numbers aren’t yet clickable, Uni Watch design director Scott M.X. Turner is now back from vacation and working on the next batch of cards as we speak. I figured he’d have a lot to do upon his return — you know how stuff piles up when you’re out of town — so I told him, “No rush.” To which he responded, “To me, there is a rush — people are waitin’ for them!” Is this guy the sweetest, most inspirational lug you’ve ever seen or what?

Meanwhile, I’ll announce a new raffle on Monday, which means a membership benefit will come into play: All enrollees will get three bonus raffle entries.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Not to knock Vince’s fine lead entry, but the best uni-related thing you’ll read today will almost certainly be this absolutely essential article about North Carolina’s myriad baseball uni combos. Crammed with interesting details and info, it’s earns Uni Watch’s highest rating. ”¦ Got a note yesterday evening from Jen Muller (who publishes a pretty sharp Yankees-centric blog), with a subject line that read, “Bobby Abreu’s belt (or why I spent the afternoon taking pictures of Bobby’s ass).” Her note was as follows: “Going through some pictures I took at last Saturday’s Yankees/Pirates game, I noticed that Bobby Abreu had some sort of gold circle on his belt. I took my camera again to this afternoon’s game, and sure enough, there it was again. Here’s a different angle. Do you have any clue as to what this is?” Nope. Anyone else? ”¦ Latest ridiculous example of the Nike branding juggernaut: If UCI wants to have its merch (which is made by New Balance) sold during the College World Series, all the gear will have to carry a swoosh, because Nike is the CWS’s official merchandiser. Completely offensive details here. ”¦ McFarlane has come out with three new Cubs figurines, but Brian Newport has spotted problems in two of them: Greg Maddux doesn’t wear his stirrups like this, and they somehow dressed Derek Lee in home pinstripes with a road cap. “I suppose if the Cubs aren’t cursed on the field, they’re cursed on toy store shelves,” says Newport. ”¦ Excellent interview from last year with the Indians’ equipment manager here (courtesy of Clevo’s own Vince Grzegorek). Best quote: “I had a player once who complained that the Chief Wahoo on his cap was not straight. He went through a whole box of a dozen caps, looking for one that he thought the Chief Wahoo was straight. But they all looked straight to me.” Please — everyone knows Chief Wahoo is gay. ”¦ Great eBay find by Robert Eden: a 1940s football official’s uni — with a button-front jersey! ”¦ Lots of other great stuff on eBay right now, including a bizarre solid-orange 1930s baseball uni (sponsored by Gulf Oil) and 22 yards of pinstriped wool flannel fabric (make your own unis!). Plus lots of nice vintage uniforms here, here, here, here, and here, some amazing varsity-style jackets here and here, and an absolutely killer Blackhawks sweater here. ”¦ Colorado State’s football team will wear 1957 throwbacks for their first home game this fall (with thanks to Rob Montoya). ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: MLB won’t allow the Royals to wear powder blues at home (scroll down a bit to find the appropriate item on the page). ”¦ Speaking of KC, a source who prefers to remain anonymous claims to “have it on very good authority that the Royals will be returning to blue shoes/belts for next season.” ”¦ Great tidbit from yesterday’s comments: This week’s Sports Illustrated cover photo originally included reliever “Bazooka” Joe Smith, but he was cropped out of the final shot. ”¦ Chelsea FC’s new away kits will look like this. ”¦ Matt Lyon passed along this item about how the Astros’ recent draft signees were brought in for a round of BP and given uni numbers corresponding to the round in which they were taken, which led to some odd situations (number-centric part of the article begins in the fourth graf). ”¦ Great little tidbit in last night’s comments, courtesy of Matthew Self: “Adam Melhuse was traded from the A”˜s to the Rangers a few days ago. He was interviewed by Rangers play-by-play man Josh Lewin before tonight”˜s game. When Lewin asked him what the biggest uniform thing for him to get used to was, Melhuse replied that it was weird for him to look down and not be wearing white cleats anymore.” ”¦ Manny went high-cuffed last night. ”¦ David Chisholm notes that the Adidas striping on the NBA refs’ sleeves forced their O’Brien Trophy patches to be awkwardly off-center. ”¦ The Marlins wore 1997 throwbacks last night, and several readers noted that they didn’t include the Jackie Robinson patch that all MLB teams wore that season. Near as I can figure, however, the Marlins never wore the Robinson patch with their vest jerseys in ”˜97. The patch was on their home pinstripes and road grays, but the right sleeves of their vest undershirts appear to have been blank all season long (additional pics here and here), and they weren’t smart enough to put the patch on the front of the vest, like the Reds did. ”¦ Note, incidentally, that the Marlins’ version of the Robinson patch was teal, instead of blue like everyone else’s, which always struck me as a very inappropriate liberty to be taking. ”¦ Also: While looking for Marlins pics, I found this shot, which shows Kevin Brown saluting injured teammate Alex Fernandez with a cap-inscribed “32” (not so unusual) and Charles Johnson doing the same with a notation on his catcher’s helmet (very unusual). ”¦ “Check out the outfield the Cubs had on Thursday when the last out was recorded,” writes Chad Peiken. “Are Pagan, Pie, and Soriano celebrating the victory, or their hosiery choice?”

I read that Joe Smith was never meant to be part of the photo. It was a rookie practical joke.

    Hey Paul,
Just a quick note to let you know that I received all my membership items in fine order and the card looks TREMENDOUS.

    Thanks a bunch.

    PS
Those chelski shirts need to be unplugged, blech.

There is a problem with the McFalane Zambrano figure…Zambrano never wears lows, only mids, the figure obviously has a tongue flap.
Marlin’s throwbacks??? How different are they from the current uniform?
I wondered the same thing when I heard the announcement that they would be wearing these. How can a team that is only about ten years old have “throwback” jerseys?
I read that Joe Smith was never meant to be part of the photo. It was a rookie practical joke.
He wasn’t cropped out…you can tell they are different pictures. I’m sure SI took some without him and just used one of those.

Their hosiery choice. It doesn’t matter that they win any games, as long as they look good while they are losing. I think a piece on the correlation between Alex Roderiguez’s monster season and his choice to go high cuffed is in order.

Not surprised that the McFarlane Cubs figures would not be uni correct. It’s happened before, and it is mostly due to the fact that the person painting the figure might (a) not know the uniform details such as correct type of socks, (b) using a different head shot for the player than what was used for the body resulting in the wrong hat/uni combo, or (c)the painter went with what looked better than what was correct. An example of them going with what looks better, apparently the Astros look better in their Red/Grays, or Red/Whites and not their home pinstripes as the only Astro they have made in home pinstripes was a Roger Clemens exclusive figure which they also used as a Yankees Clemens.

That sucks about the Royals not being alowed to wear the baby blues at home! If they were to get the approval of the opposing team to wear the road blues at home, then couldn’t the MLB make an exception?

Maybe it’s just the picture quality, but the Robinson patches on the Marlin’s unis look WAY different from the one on the Reds uni. The general shape looks the same but the colors look off to me. I have a game-worn 1997 Brewers jersey and the patch on it looks exactly like the patch on the Reds uni. Were they team specific or am I just seeing things?

    Look at this pic.

The kid with the “2” jersey gets it (except for the Haagen Daas hat), but the guy the with the Rivera jersey with “RIVERA” on it, doesn’t……..

    link

OK, they must be different. If you look at the Marlins/Braves pic, the Marlins patch is definitely different than the one on Klesko’s jersey.

Dang it. It didn’t read the next entry. At least I noticed it, right? :) Sorry!!!

Also, McFarlane made an Oswalt figuer using a new head on a Pedro Martinez figure and never corrected the cut sleeves that Pedro has, and roy does not. They also put Berkman’s head on a Piazza body that was way undersized for the Big Puma/Fat Elvis…

As for the Maddux McFarlane, I think it might be refering back ot his days as a Cub before heading to the Braves….maybe?

A few weeks ago we were talking about bat day at Yankee Stadium. Some people said bats were given out on the way out, while others disagreed.

Here’s a pic to prove they were given out when kids entered:

hmm, why not take baby steps and start with the powder blue jersey. use that as the home alternate in place of the royal blue alternate. switch the royal blue alternate to away. that way, at least they can satisfy part of their desire (the jersey being the most important anyway), plus sell some more merch.

This was probably generally assumed by people, but I’m not sure I’d seen anything official – “(White) Sox players will wear blue wristbands and a blue ribbon on their uniforms Sunday to raise awareness of prostate cancer.”

I presume all other teams will be doing the same

That article on UNC baseball is fascinating. Why am I not surprised that Nike is trying to get more black into the uniforms of its top baseball programs, even those that have no need for it? DITCH THE BLACK, NIKE!

they should put one of the jerseys at the western Reserve Historical Society, next to the Chief Wahoo that hung on Municipal Stadium

The Marlins, Dodgers and Expos all wore different versions of the 1997 Jackie Robinson 50th Anniversary patch. The Expos was unique because it had “Breaking Barriers” written in French.

If I remeber correctly — I don’t beleive that the Indians wore the 1997 50th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson patch at all and that the Giants and White Sox only wore it on their home jersey.

Thank you, Paul, for using the word ‘Myriad’ correctly. My biggest pet peeve is when people say ‘a myriad of…’.

The Dodgers were Robinson’s team so they should get to have a different one. Montreal is a bilingual city so the French is cool (and Robinson played there; they should have worn Montreal Royals jerseys on Robinson Day). But what makes the Marlins so special?

My Wife recently gave me permission to but an authentic Steelers Jersey for Father’s Day. The player I want to buy, however, is an offensive lineman. Anyway, I know the line jerseys are cut a lot longer than the skill jerseys (so a skill jersey would look better) but are there any other differences between the two?

First off, “My Wife recently gave me permission…” You’re going to have to work on that one! hahaha

Secondly all of the “jerseys they sell” are not the same as the on field jerseys anyway. You’ll have to go through a lot of trouble to get you hands on an actual game jersey. The jerseys sold in stores or on the NFLShop should be considered the closest thing a fan can get without going through the team and getting a team issued jersey. The real lineman jerseys are always custom fit to the particular lineman’s tastes and needs, so there is no generic difference.

With that being said I would just go ahead and put then name you want on the highest quality jersey you have access to.
I get that the authentic jersey would not technically be an on field jersey. But wouldn’t the difference be that a korean kid instead of the equipment manager sews the name on my jersey and that it is not custom fit just for me. I would think at that price the matierials and the “look” would be the exact same. I would assume that the player wear custom made jerseys.

Very rarely does that actual equipment manager sew on the letters. That is done only in emergency situations.

If you want the same person to sew your jersey that does the Steelers I would start poking around all of the local sports shops and find out who their official shop is that does their jerseys. Check with the Pirates and the Penguins too because most of the time it’s the same shop that does them all. It’s going to cost you a lot more for them to do it though, and honestly, it’s not that much different than getting your local dry cleaner to do it. The key is having the correct number and letters, which are available on that website that I linked to earlier.

I thought that too at first, but it looked legit enough in the close up pictures. Even authentic jerseys have sleeves; they are just usually custom cut by the team so they just barely fit over the shoulder pads. Having elastic on the end of the sleeves is the tell-tale real versus fake sign, and that one had elastic. But where did he get it? any feedback on that potential solution listed in #17?

Todd Krevanchi: I’ll go on record here: even though I generally do not care for alternate jerseys, I absolutely LOVE the Royals’ ROYAL jerseys. Kudos for wearing a jersey that reflects the team name. Not that silly black garbage. Why shouldn’t the Royals wear royal? I mean, the Inter Milan Nerazzurri (sp?) wear black and blue, the Liverpool Reds wear as much red as possible, so let the Royals wear royal.
Now, powder blue tops with white pants? I personally don’t like the sound of that. They should go all out and break out the powder blue pants as well, even if that relegates the outfit to away status.

You are never going to see a game ready or team issued quality jersey in a store, and that seems to be what you want. Looks like you’re stuck buying game used or team issued jerseys at auction.

The one from the ebay link is the same jersey as sold on NFL Shop. You can find blanks…you just have to look hard. And actually, if you do find them, chances are they are legit, especially if that have the nameplate hanging from the neck in a little plastic baggie. Trust me on this – NFL teams have a supply of blanks that they use for things like the draft, commercials, players families..etc. The one you find could be one of those that got out since the NFL itself doesn’t sell them.

You used to see them all of the time when teams switched manufacturers.

My dream home Royals uniform: Just the whites as they are. I’m not exactly a fan of alternate uniforms, but the Royal blue with Royals script is, as I said yesterday, as good as it gets.

My dream road Royals uniform: Replace the current gray with powder blue and they’re perfect.

Caps? Royal blue with white button. No black, no gray, no BP’s.

Here’s a question for the UniWatch community. I know that everyone looks on the old powder blue uniforms from Philly, Montreal, KC, etc. with much fondness, and I like them as well. But when and why did powder blue replace grey as the en vogue color for away uniforms?

I’m surprised that no one has pointed out that the Marlins are probably wearing the ’97 unis to commemorate their big World Series win.

To be honest, I’m not a fan of blousing the pants. To me it looks kind of strange how they’re just hanging there. I like the bunching look and actually bunch up my pants when I’m playing. It feels great and actually looks pretty good.

By fairly amazing coincidence, Scott and I were discussing this very topic earlier today. Here’s Scott’s explanation:

The “5” that looks like an upside-down “2” is an actual “5” that’s been in use for decades. Possibly because it looks so much like an upside-down “2,” manufacturers over the years created a version where the 45-degree angle on the left side was leveled into a more standard 90-degree corner.

Paul and I, in a fit of obessive study, are considering switching from the 45-degree “5” to the 90-degree “5.”

The numbers the Dodgers wear are a fairly standard style worn by many MLB teams these days. Our reasons for choosing this style remain a closely-guarded secret.

If we switch the styles, those with the 45-degree “5” will have the Uni Watch equivalent of the link.

If we don’t make the switch, then it keeps you out of the depressing, skeevy world of sports collectibles.

Some interesting notes from the Rice vs Louisville CWS game. First off, Rice’s front jersey numbers seem to be rather large. Second, The CWS sleeve patch is on the same sleeve as the American flag patch on Rice’s jerseys, making an awkward situation. And third, Rice’s pitcher is wearing glasses. Rather large glasses too. Here’s something I’ve never seen before though from the Louisville side. One hitter (not sure of his name, he bats before Dominguez), got a bloop hit to right wearing his pants down in the “pajama pant” look. When he got to first, it showed him taking off his shin guard and what not, and handing it to the coach. However, after that he reached down, and pulled his pants up, and kept the high cuffed look as he ran the bases. Oh yea, his socks has an adidas logo right in the middle of the shin. This makes sense to me, as I always found it easier to run while wearing my socks high.

Could it be because of the theory surrounding the ump having a harder time calling low strikes without the color contrast. It does seem weird, but most ballplayers have superstitious beliefs. Maybe he’s been called out looking too many times with a low strike?

I have never been a fan of the 5950 cap (although I haven’t really experienced the new ones yet), for someone with a large head — 7 3/4 — it can be very hard to find one that fits well, and I always found them to be too hot (as in the amount of heat that would get trapped in my head).

Jerry’s appears to be quite faded, but I actually like the kind of adjustable hat he is wearing there (if it is the same one I’m thinking of). I was a little pissed a year ago though with Nike added the logo-creep to that model though, but I have a few that are older, minus the swoosh.

just a note re: blousing pants and high socks…while baseball seems to be moving away from it, some soccer keepers have seemed to start sporting it. I don’t have any pics b/c I’ve noticed from the keeper on my team (Super-20 League) and an opposing keeper. Both guys wore their socks up on top of their knees with warm-up pant that had been cut to look like capri’s almost (similar to Paul’s sweats in his softball pic).
I should have looked into the photo galleries some more. For those of you who have heard of it, netball appears to be an amalgam of Korfball and basketball. Korfball is an awkward Dutch game resembling Dr. Naismith’s game.

    link

Korfball is generally referred to as a cross between basketball and netball.

Netball has restrictions in that no dribbling is allowed and only certain players can shoot and only in certain areas.

Korfball doesn’t allow dribbling but allows any player to shoot as long as they are in their attacking half of the court.

Korfball is also – as far as I know – the only sport that requires both males and females to participate professionally.

    pie is pronounced P.A.
    thus the state pun.

I have a question regarding the “59FIFTY surgery”: Has anyone done it on a wool cap and the process doesn’t work? I did it to all my 59FIFTY models, but there is one that absolutely refuses to do the whole “fitting around your skull” bit. Despite wetting it and whatnot, the cap (a) refuses to shrink, and (b) retained that “train conductor/trucker cap” look to it.

And before some genius chimes in with “are you sure it’s not a 2007 model”, I bought it a few years ago, the underbill is gray, and the tag says “100% Wool”. The material, though, when compared with my other 59FIFTY’s, feels more like polyester than wool. Anyone have a similar thing happen to them?

BTW anyone who has never done it to the their 59FIFTY should absolutely try it; it makes your cap look and feel like a Franchise cap, but in an actual on-field model.
Color TV.

A few teams had them in the late ’60s, starting with the ’64 White Sox. By 1973 there were 7, 10 in 1977, 11 in 1980. Around 1985 they started to go away. In 1992 they were all gone; the ’91 Royals and Expos were the last.

Not to start a whole “thing” or piss anybody off or anything, but may I be the first to ask the obvious question…

…if MLB will not allow the Royals to wear a “road” uniform at home, why the f*** do they allow a certain club which plays its home games near the site of the 1964 World’s Fair to wear its road cap at home all the time?

    I’m just saying……

(Yes, I’m sure it’s because the rule doesn’t apply to caps, but still……)

No the jersey would be completely wrong then – there would be a cubbie head sleve patch not the walking cub, and those jerseys would have blue “taping?” around the collar and arm holes, an dno mlb logo on th eback collar. Not to mention Mad-dog used to sport a very nice ‘stache in those days as well.

    On the McFarlanes …
The most glaring problems were fixed on the actual run. The photos in the ticker are just prototypes. A similar example was the first Derrek Lee prototype. He’s in the blue alternate with gray pants, but had no name on his back. It was fixed in the actual run.
Here’s one.

My Wife recently gave me permission to but an authentic Steelers Jersey for Father’s Day. The player I want to buy, however, is an offensive lineman. The jerseys they sell are only skill player jerseys, thus, if you bought a the jersey and put a lineman’s name on it, it would not be an actual on field jersey, which by itself has alomost completely discouraged me from the purchase.

Anyway, I know the line jerseys are cut a lot longer than the skill jerseys (so a skill jersey would look better) but are there any other differences between the two?

    Does anybody know?
You should be able to buy an authentic jersey with double shoulders, sewn numbers, knit cuss sleeves, etc. from the Steelers web site or other authentic NFL jersey web sites. These authentics are pretty close to the on-field jerseys, but are usuaklly made outsise of the USA.

The on-field jerseys are all made in the USA as per NFL rules. Also, for NFL linemen most of their on-field jerseys are sleeveless, imagine a jersey with no sleeves and a tight, heavy knit cuff where the sleeve should start. Some skill players also wear these. They are generally MISERABLE to wear.

You can find a good variety on EBAY. Sometimes you can purchase an on-field jersey with skill sleeves. If you can get a blank one, there are many places to get official team letters and numbers sewn on professionally.

Check out EBAY rfrequently and you may get something that you’ll like. Good Luck !!!

Agreed on the new Bruins unis, except for one thing; they should have kept the gold shoulders for the white jerseys, a la the Bobby Orr era.

As for the shoulder patches, love them; the way I understand it, the “Boston” version is for the road unis, the “Bruins” version for the home.

Have also heard they have a gold third-jersey, with the logos reversed (bear on chest, B on shoulder) ready for when the NHL allows them again.
