Got two really interesting communiqués involving minor league baseball yesterday. The first came from Benjamin Guest, who checked in with the following:
The Birmingham Barons, AA affiliate of the ChiSox, used to play at Rickwood Field, the oldest ballpark in the country. Back in the late ’80s, they moved out to a park in the suburbs of Hoover that has even less charm than the big league club’s new Comiskey, and Rickwood was slated for demolition. But the city of Birmingham didn’t have enough money to knock it over, so it’s still there. Once a year, the Barons hop in a time machine, go back to Rickwood, and throw on some awesome uniforms, (flannel a couple years back — dudes were bitching).
On Wednesday, they went back to the 1964 season, when the team was a KC A’s affiliate. The Barons wore the ’64 team’s road golds at home [here’s another shot], while the visiting Jacksonville Suns wore their home 1967 whites (Nolan Ryan was on that team). It looked pretty cool, if you can get past the Barons’ black helmets.
Man, I love that — not just throwback unis, but a throwback stadium! And speaking of stadia, that brings us to the other note I received yesterday, this one from Alan Duke, who wrote thusly:
About a month ago, I drove down to San Jose to check out Municipal Stadium and see the San Jose Giants play the Modesto Nuts. Misjudging traffic, I get there a little early and walked around the ballpark, where I noticed that most every sign had been painted by hand. In addition to the standard “Thanks for coming” and advertising signage, they have an extensive series of murals featuring the current logos from all the minor league clubs, as well as a comprehensive “history of baseball” timeline for the San Jose region. I particularly like the hand-painted team pennants (notice the painted tacks “attaching” them to wall). Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a credit for the artist or team of artists. Highly recommended to check out when in the Bay Area!
Gorgeous stuff. Alan took nearly three dozen of these photos, which I’ve assembled into a slide show that you can see here.
Membership Update: Ãœber-thanks to all who made the first day of the official Uni Watch membership program such a smashing success. Scott Turner is busily preparing the first batch of membership cards, and I’ll start adding all of you to the membership roster shortly (it’s gonna take a few days, but don’t worry, it’ll happen). I truly appreciate the support, as well as all the kind words that many of you included in your membership orders — thanks again.
And one small update: If you go to the Membership page, you’ll see that I’ve added sneak peeks of the artwork from each of the three style guides available at Level Three.
Uni Watch News Ticker: “Thought you might find this old Washington Huskies photo interesting,” writes Patrick Woody. “It was, of all places, hanging by the bathrooms in a Seattle grocery store near the University. We were on vacation there during Memorial Day weekend.” … The Cool Base thing just does not look good (great screen grab by Tim Bennett). … Seth Horowitz notes that the Duke lacrosse player in this photo has a little “MP” notation on his helmet, an apparent shout-out to former coach Mike Pressler. … First, as I reported yesterday, Dan Ortmeier’s left-sleeve patch was missing; then, last night, as Chris Shastid points out, the Giants’ right-sleeve All-Star Game patch was missing from Fred Lewis’s jersey (and Ortmeier’s patch was still MIA). … Former MLBer Tom Brookens, now managing in the Tigers’ minor league system, is setting a fine hosiery example for the young ’uns (with thanks to Luke Larson). … Interesting note from Doug Steffenson, who writes: “Those of us who follow sailing have been following our ‘Super Bowl’ over the past few months, as the America’s Cup races have been taking place in Valencia, Spain. The Italian team Lunna Rossa is sponsored and outfitted by the design house Prada. Does a pricey designer mean better team uniforms? I’ll leave that up to the experts like yourself. Other teams, like the U.S. entry BMW Oracle, have crew names and numbers on the back of their racing unis.” I happen to have sailed quite a bit while growing up (my hometown was right on the Great South Bay, don’tcha know), and I can assure you that nobody dressed me up in Prada or slapped a uni number on my back. Can’t these clowns sail in cut-offs and sneakers, like everybody else? … One of the Baltimore Sun‘s sports columnists devoted his entire column today to the debate over the Orioles’ road jersey insignia. But as Matt French notes, “The writer is one smug son of a bitch, talking about the trivialities of ‘baseball laundry.’ ”
Pittsburgh Steelers new punter, link, sporting a pair of Nike Zoom T90’s. Also from that paper, another picture of the gold helmets, this time by link. Note that he is also playing with a soccer ball.
are there any shots of that old stadium?
That’s great stuff on the Barons. Are there any photos of the throwback game that give a better view of the park? The photo with the ancient Burma-Shave ad in the background is fantastic.
Jim Caple of ESPN.com did a story on Rickwood Field not too long ago link. Some nice photos there.
Oops, messed up the link for the Caple story. link

In the same line as the Prada Sponsorship, Hugo Boss has been a sponsor of the McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1 team for a while. They’ve had a bit more “style” to their team since then including the DarthVader look of their Pit Crew:

My Dad was a sign painter (as well as boats, restaurants, trucks, etc.) for almost 30 years until computers basically put him out of business. Other than places like Disney World, or old fashioned boardwalk locations, it’s hard to find a collection of hand painted signs anymore. It really lends a “down home” feeling to see the work and craftsmanship that was put into hand painted sign or mural.
Why the hate for Comiskey Park (aka US Cellular Field)? Anybody who complains it has no charm clearly hasn’t been in a while…
Sure “The Cell” has had some updates but the place still stinks to see a ball game. No I am not a Cubs fan who is saying this I’m actually a Cards fan so I have no underlying motive to bash the Sox.
I was thumbing through my copy of Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century last night (a great way to kill a few hours) and noticed a few weird things.
1) I was familiar with the Pirates and Cards wearing stovepipe/pillbox caps in 1976 for the NL 100th anniversary, but according to the book (and Dressed to the Nines – same database) The Mets, Reds and Phillies had the same kind of hats as an alt. that season. Does anyone have any actual photos of these being worn? link
2) In 1972, and for that year only, the Cubs wore a road jersey with the number link on the front basketball style. I’d never seen this on a ML baseball uni before. There’s actually a picture of Ron Santo wearing the jersey in the book.
Sure “The Cell†[ed: Comiskey Park] has had some updates but the place still stinks to see a ball game.
Sure, unless you like great sight lines, comfortable seating, great ameneties and concessions and no poles to block your view. It’s easily one of the better places to watch a game these days, and nice and easy to get to.
Great article on Rickwood Field, truly a classic. However, it may be the oldest ‘baseball’ stadium but Harvard stadium was built in 1903 making it the most senior stadium in the country. (And it is still in use on a regular basis, unfortunately they abandoned the natural turf a few years ago.)
There was recent discussion regarding font inconsistancy. Last night i noticed that the font for “Cleveland” in the Cavs logo is different than “Cavaliers”. Howerver, when “Cleveland” is on their unis, as it was last night, the font matches “Cavaliers”.
BTW … LBJ was incredible.
The handpainted digns are great, but there is a glaring error.

The Cell is easy to get to because it’s in the middle of the ghetto. Sure there is plenty of parking becasue it’s nothing but abandon lots surrounding the ball park. The sight lines from the upper deck are so nice that you have a better view of the lake than you do the game.
The Cell could have been a very nice stadium with a few minor adjustments.
1) Reposition the fields orentation so the outfield looks to the city, giving the centerfield a view of the skyline instead of high rise Chicago Housing Authority buildings
2) Cover some of that concrete. When the place opened it was so gray from all the concrete it felt steryl, but then again, with the way Sox fans are, (you know, 1st base coach stalking record blasting, Jimbo’s patrons)it was probably easier to simply hose down after games
The renovations of the 16 year old stadium (it’s sade that a stadium that’s only 16 has gone through I think it’s 3 major renovations) have made the place a little morepleasing, but then again, I last went to the Cell after going to a number of games at the Dome in Minnesota so anything is a step up from that.

The knocks at the south side and at Sox fans in general are really mature. Really. And for the record, the CHA high rises are all gone, the neighborhood is just fine (look at the crime records compared to Wrigleyview), and there haven’t been “3 major renovations” – it was one renovation, done over a number of phases. That’s all from me, since it isn’t even really on topic here. I’ll just say this – myself (and I’d wager the vast vast majority of White Sox fans) love our park and would never in a million years switch with Wrigley Field, despite what any so-called “experts” might say.

In this pic I see something I still can’t figure out. When the Astros wore the rainbow jerseys, did they wear the same one at home and on the road or were the road kits slightly off white? Been wondering that for 30 years. Still can’t tell in the Dressed to the Nines pic.

I agree this isn’t the place for the discussion and felt bad for the post after I sent it. I grew up near Comisky and loved the old place for all it’s charm, but have never liked the new one. Many of my comments were in good humor as much of my family and friends like the Sox.
If Sox fans, or any fans for that matter would take another stadium over their own I would be a bit suspect of them. Even Twins fans like their old Dome (I think that’s because they know something better is being built right now).
It’s Friday and my mind is wandering. I’ll try to keep my rants to a minimum today.

I’m not sure there was really any particular reason – whoever picked the uniforms must have just liked red. It really wouldn’t be any weirder than wearing their more traditional colors of blue and black if it wasn’t for the fact that there was a team called the Red Sox, but I see no reason for the White Sox have to worry about other teams when picking their look.
Let’s try this again, since my previous post got merged in with someone else’s response:

Unlike the Pirates, the anniversary caps were not the Mets every day caps that year. They only wore those caps a few times. As I recall, they wore them Opening Day and holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, etc.) and maybe a few other days.

I think there’s also a hardcover reprint from ’94 available on that book.
I wrote Marc Okkonen a few years back to praise the volume and see if he ever thought of putting an addendum out and he said that wasn’t in his plans. He referred me to the Dressed to the Nines exhibit. I think he was involved in that project but I’m not 100% sure.
The site is great, but I sure would like to have a hardcopy to supplement the original book. I think that book goes to ’93 so they could ’94 to present and then maybe come out with a volume every ten years.

A manager wearing cleats is implying that he’s going to do something physcial aside from the usual shoving of sunflower seeds in the mouth or picking of the nose.

coaches dont wear cleats. Maybe Leyland does, but they don’t do it anymore. and I don’t argue the decision.
And before anyone comments, yes I know that the Mets lead the league in players suspended for steroid use.

At a ball-park, I’m a bit of a hot-dog snob. I don’t like the ones from the guys in the stands. I want to go to the concession stand and get the ones that are already on the bun, and in the foil wrapper…so that the bun is steamed. That’s heaven right there…an Esskay Orioles dog in the wrapper, with the warmed bun and yellow mustard.

Esskay Orioles’ dogs are the best. With mustard and onions. Camden Yards is by far one of the best ballparks in use.
I used to work for the California League office which is located in San Jose, so we regularly dropped by games at San Jose’s Municipal Stadium. The signage is great and new teams (new names, new locations, etc.) are updated at the start of each season. The murals are awesome and the BBQ down the left field line is one of the minor leagues’ best, too. The BBQ was so good that putting ketchup on it would be blasphemous. But, if Heinz was willing to pay a couple of bucks for a painted sign, they sure as heck would have it in their ballpark.

I tend to agree. I put ketchup on dogs at home, but never at the ballpark. Usually Gulden’s Spicy Brown with raw onions – occasionally kraut.

Never touch the stuff; it’s mustard for me and always has been. even when I was little. But I figure, what the hell, ketchup is a small price to pay for the honor of having my daughter come with me to the ballpark.

Ketchup, Mustard, chopped onions, hot peppers with Hot Dog or Sausage from the street guys when I arrive at the park, 3rd inning start on the salted peanuts in the shell. If there’s room, a pretzel in the 7th. Then maybe if I see the street guys on my way out of the ballpark, I’ll get another Dog, and drive home with the feeling of gut rot. It’s worth it.
On the whole hot-dog issue:
My wife’s family is from a small little corner of Southwestern Virginia (Pound, VA in Wise County). Apparently, in that neck of the woods, if you ask for a HOT DOG, you get what everyone else in the world calls a Chili Dog. The default for Hot Dog there is a dog with chili.
To get what we all call a hot dog, you have to ask for a “weiner bun.” Now, we go down there at Christmas…and this just throws me off. Being a pain-in-the-ass Yankee (they call me a yankee, since I’m from Maryland…which is funny, because my Jersey family thinks I’m a southerner… Maryland: The ‘I Can’t Win’ state) i refuse to conform to their backward terminology.
One of them went to a ballgame with some friends in Cincinnati, and they got 3 hot dogs. He tells me, “none of them had chili on them” and I came back with “That’s because EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD, THAT’S a hot dog!”
Had to share, since we’re on the topic.

Ketchup is great on a dog, but not a the ol’ ballyard. I used to love the dogs at Tiger Stadium when they were steamed in beer. Now that was a great dog. Too bad they don’t do it at Comerica, they just don’t taste right nowadays…
Paul, at least you mention the best coney island ever: Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit. I love going down there after big events. The seating is a key to the charm, where else can you go and sit next to complete strangers and have a great conversation?

Everything is overpriced at the ballpark. I don’t like it, but hey, what can you do? If I’m already paying somewhere between $5.50 to $8 for a draft beer that’s probably worth $0.50, I might as well pay ~$8 for a sandwich–that seems like less of a ripoff to me.

The Cards wore ’em for just the ’76 season; as far as I know, the Pirates were the only team to wear the “pillbox” hats after ’76 as well. (Combined with the “Stargell Stars” Willie awarded his teammates, the Pirates had the coolest headgear in MLB… even though the all-yellow unis made Stargell look like a school bus!)

RE: the pillbox caps. From Wikipedia:
In 1976 to celebrate the National League’s 100th season, along with several other N.L. clubs–including the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the New York Mets–the Reds adopted an old-fashioned pillbox-style cap for use during nostalgia events. Unlike the Pirates and the Cardinals, the Reds did not make regular use of this cap, which featured a white crown with two encircling red stripes, a red bill, and a red wishbone C insignia. For regular wear, the Reds stuck to their all-red caps.

A lot of people tend to urinate on The Cell just because it replaced a classic park. I admit I did, too, until I actually went to a game there. Yes, it’s extremely modern. No, it’s not the gateway to hell. And it kept the team in town. I don’t mind The Cell nearly as much as I thought I would. Beyond that, it goes into my son’s memory as his first big league game.
Everyone who pines for old Comiskey needs to remember one thing. IT WASN’T AN OPTION FOR THE FUTURE. In 1988, there was a choice between the new ballpark or the St. Petersburg White Sox. Comiskey was done. The White Sox were in such a hurry to tear it down that they sold seats that had already been removed (I sat on concrete for a Sox-A’s game in late August 1990).

Don’t forget about link.
When I was at Old Comiskey in ’87, it was clear that decades of neglect would require a new park. The problem is that the design for what’s now the Cell was so pedestrian; I believe that the lowest upper deck seats in the new stadium are higher than the highest in the old one were.
When the Orioles were designing their new park, they used New Comiskey as a model of what they didn’t want. They (and HOK) came up with Camden Yards instead, and sparked the move to retro ballpark design that’s been so successful.
I found a rad Star Trek Uniform Cameo for you all… Data in a red duty uniform. It’s pretty jarring, actually.

One good note on that topic: I was at my cousin’s tee-ball game yesterday. Probably 85% of the players had bloused pants and stirrups. Even better, most of those with stirrups had the real mccoy, not the fake stirrup look socks. Made me feel good that the coming generations are getting it right.

Sorry, schuby, I got to chime in on the hotdog talk for a moment, but I will tie it into unis. I only eat a hot dog when I go to a game. I put on mustard and onions and maybe relish, but no ketchup. I don’t like ketchup, so it’s not an option.
Speaking of mustard (here’s the tie-in), I really don’t like the yellow helmets/practice jersey of the Steelers, but Troy P. makes anything look great. Thanks, Chris H., for posting a picture of my boy.
I really love the old-timey stadiums, unis and signs (though not the Suns’ caps), and I can’t believe how much better the hand-painted signs look. I dig the minor league logos, too. For the most part, they look better than the big league logos.
Now, I have to eat because you all made me hungry with the hot dog talk!

My (admittedly imperfect) memory keeps insisting that everyone had a version of the “pillbox” hats for the Bicentennial Year of 1976… I’ve got a White Sox version (“adjustible” replica), and remember seeing similar replicas for the A’s, Cubs, and Dodgers.

I have the White Sox one as well. There were a bunch of replica ones for sale in Cooperstown in 2005. I only distinctly remember the Giants one, which is a mock-up as well.

Interesting to know that Coors serves Hebrew Nationals (yet to make my yearly trip to the yard). Now pass me the basket of Rocky Mountain Oysters.
Bull and Bush is a great location to hold it–great on-site brews, oodles of parking–but as an alternative suggestion for the more downtown-inclined, the Wynkoop Brewery is a decent choice. Did the NL players wear pill box hats in the 76 All Star game? I seem to recall a team photo with the players dressed like that. Does anyone remember that?
Man…reading about all that food before i ate was a bad idea…
I loved the thing about Rickwood and San Jose Municipal. Ballparks are easily my favorite places in the world to be, and to see the über-classic and the quaint hand-painted one was really cool. Of the MLB parks that I’ve been to, I would say that Camden Yards is the best, though the experience of Wrigley Field was up there as well.
If y’all want a good ballpark experience, try to find your way to Indianapolis and visit link for an Indy Indians game. Pretty much everyone who visits The Vic says they absolutely love it. It’s only 11 years old, but it’s got that downtown, PNC Park-like feel to it that makes it great. Plus, old link (ca. 1931) is still standing up on 16th St, but it’s falling into disrepair and is probably going to meet the wrecking ball at some point…poor shame there.

Hey, every baseball park is different, and people like different things.
If you want to rag on the Twins’ baggie-dome, I don’t think anyone will disagree with you. That was a horrible mistake (and, to boot, it actually affects the game on the field in a very frustrating way).
I love US Cellular, but I’m a Sox fan. So take it for what you will. However, it is no where near universally bad. It looks good now with the green and trimmed-down upper deck. It is tremendously comfortable (sitting, seeing, getting around). It is very easy to get to and park (oh, and tailgating! Can’t do that at Wrigley or Fenway, right?)
I admire Wrigley and Fenway for their “quaintness”… but come on, without the “history” attached, both stadiums are dirty and uncomfortable.

San Jose Muni is a GREAT place to watch a game, and a fabulous minor league experience. Hard to believe that it is in the middle of a city of +/- 800,000. CCS High School Baseball championships were played there off and on when I was a kid and I saw several SJ Missions and SJ Bees games there as a kid. Great views, classic outfield wall advertising, a train track over the outfield wall (although it is a spur line and I never saw a train on it . . . )
The only thing that could be better is the orientation of the field, which is South/SouthWest. With a tradional NE aliggnment, it would also have killer views of Mt. Hamilton and the foothills.
And yes, the LF BBQ is outstanding!

I love Camden. My senior year in high school was when it opened up…and they invited 2 student journalists from each county (in MD) to be part of the first press conference there…I was lucky enough to be selected from my county…it was an awesome experience.
I’ve always been fascinated with baseball’s early years (Ebbets, Forbes, Polo Grounds, etc..) and to have a nice park that was more rooted in baseball tradition than in 70’s-era cookie cutter, and which incorporated the existing warehouse…it was very cool.
I still think that my favorite seats in the place are the el-cheapo seats out on Eutaw st, in the bleachers, under the scoreboard.
I hear that PNC and Pac Bell (or whatever they call the Giants park now) have more stuff…but Camden will always be the one that started the trend, the original throwback.

The Angels took “Anaheim” off the road jerseys a few years ago (I think they last wore it the year they won the Series, 2002). Must have been a preemptive strike for the whole “LA” thing.

Camden is great; it’s newer, yet still nostalgic in feel. True nostalgia can only come from places like Wrigley, Fenway, Yankee Stadium, or Dodger Stadium. As for the modern parks, don’t discount PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Pirates play AAAA baseball, but it’s a fantastic experience to watch a game there. I’ve been to some shitholes, too: Fulton County Stadium, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, and RFK in DC. I’d also recommend Jacobs Field as a solid place to catch a game.
My wife lived in Baltimore while we were dating and her office was in the B&O Warehouse. The O’s rent out the end closest to I-95 to private companies, so I have a fondness for Camden Yards. I’m a born and raised Philadelphian, so I am certainly biased towards Citizens Bank Park. But, as much as it pains me to admit, the best baseball stadium in the majors at least is PNC Park. I’ve been there a few times including last years All Star Game and it’s just perfect. The setting, the walk across Clemente Bridge, the skyline view, the intimacy, and the Primanti Brothers sandwiches all combined to make it such a special place to watch a great sport.

The “no ketchup” on hot dogs sentiment is about as ridiculous a thing as I can imagine. Go ahead and glower at me as I put ketchup on a hot dog everytime I eat one in the ballpark. See if I care one bit (I don’t).That’s the beauty of not growing up in a hot dog/brat anal city/state like Chicago or Wisconsin. However, I would not go into a “chicago dog” rest. and ask for ketchup. I do respect local tradition, I just don’t follow it.
Now if we were talking about pretzels I would understand. Mustard only.

Regarding the best movie jersey. Not the best jersey, but an interesting one. I always thought the lacing on the Nazis jersey was pretty interest despite the fact that it was on the Nazi uni and the facts that they sported red socks. Please, by no means do I support or condone any action taken by this group of people. Just found it as an interesting uni design which was politically/ideologically motivated. Can anyone think of any other examples.

Been to two games at Camden Yards, and took a tour, and I would drop everything in a second to see another game there. And this is coming from someone who goes to about 15-20 Yankee games a year. The only ballpark that even comes close that I’ve been to is the Giants park. As for the other stadiums I’ve been to, Veterans Stadium, Shea Stadium and the Skydome. ‘Nuff said.

When the Orioles were designing their new park, they used New Comiskey as a model of what they didn’t want. They (and HOK) came up with Camden Yards instead, and sparked the move to retro ballpark design that’s been so successful.
New Comiskey and Camden (both HOK projects) opened only one year apart; it is very unlikely that HOK was influenced by what was preceived as “bad” about Comiskey in designing Camden.
In fact, the key moment was when the main Camden architect was inspired to not work around the B&O Warehouse, but to incorporate it in the design. It led to the asymmetrical dimensions, the red brick, the dark green iron and steel, etc.

I was living in St. Louis in 1976 and went to lots of games, and I don’t remember them wearing those caps at all. Could be my faulty memory, but I think they probably only wore them occasionally.
Looking at it the other way, only the Tigers and Yanks have no part of their team name, home or away, on their jerseys.

Agreed. The Ballpark in Arlington is just as nice as Oriole Park, and in some respects nicer, but the ballpark experience in Baltimore is infinitely better.
In Texas, before and after the game you can sit in a vast parking lot or perhaps take a long walk to a crappy chain restaurant . . . and that’s it. The Rangers made a huge mistake when they did not try to find a way to get their stadium built in downtown Dallas or Fort Worth.
I live in San Jose (and attend San Jose State University…only a few blocks away from Municipal), and I used to go to SJ Giants games quite often. They play third fiddle around here to the SF Giants and Oakland A’s, so the stadium is hardly a big deal to most people around here. It’s definitely a nice place to watch a game and see baseball at its purest. I’m quite partial to attending SJSU games there, however.

Find a copy of Ballpark: Camden Yards and the Building of an American Dream by Peter Richmond, which goes into lots of detail on the funding, design, and construction of Camden Yards. I’m sure that New Comiskey was the model of what the Orioles didn’t want; it may have been that HOK’s original Baltimore design, which was rejected by the ballclub, was based on what they’d just done in Chicago.

I am watching the Marlins/Brewers game and noticed that Jeff Suppan has no “1982 Anniversary Patch” on his right sleeve like all the other players. If I had to assume I would think because he is right handed, he doesn’t like the feel of that big patch on his throwing arm. I have the jersey on right now and it does make the sleeve a little stiff I guess but shouldn’t cause that many problems. But pitchers can get fussy I suppose. And I would have to go back and check, but I don’t think Suppan has pitched on a Retro Friday yet. If he has I wonder if he had the patch missing then too.

Yeah those were the spring training/batting practice jerseys for that era. The road version had “New York” in block letters arched across the front in silver with an orange and silver outline if I recall correctly, paired with the gray pants with the orange-blue-orange stripes down the side.
I’m surprised Bonilla could fit both a helmt and cap on his huge head. His was big from his inflated ego, unlike his former teammate the Human Bobblehead, who got his huge coconut courtesy of HGH.

toughy… could list about 2 dozen more…
Eastern State University was my alma mater! Sort of. I was part of the South Carolina Band for that movie. The uniforms were good, but I’m not a big fan of maroon.
I agree with most of your picks. However, I think the NY Knights from The Natural are better than the Bears. I like the color scheme better.
I’ve been to 19 major league parks (including some duplicates to reflect new stadia – for example, I saw the Rockies play at Mile High).
Favorite – Wrigley. Great combination of historic ballpark with reasonably updated facilities
Favorite new – PNC in Pittsburgh. They did everything right – sight lines, setting, neighborhood, access to public transport. Camden Yards (originator of old park ambiance) and Coors Field (sun setting over Rockies in left) are close behind.
Worst – close call between RFK, the Vet, and the old Arlington Stadium.
I saw a game at the Cell before the recent renovations. I thought it was OK, but nothing about it made it stand out – it didn’t have character like the new parks I cited above.
For those of you too busy on your Friday night to torture yourselves with a purple on purple matchup at the WCWS, check out the photo gallery link.

I wish there was some way the Indianapolis Indians could do a throwback stadium event. Don’t get me wrong, the Vic is a great ballpark. But I moved to Indy about a month after the Indians moved from their old home, Bush Stadium, to the new Victory Field, and I never got to see the old park (which stood in for Comiskey in “Eight Men Out”) in action. Bush is still standing, but, as Kyle at IU notes, it’s in pretty sad shape these days–it was a short-track racetrack for a few years, and now it just sits empty, waiting to be torn down. I don’t want to think about how many million dollars it would take to make the place playable for baseball (and habitable by fans) again. But I wish I could see it.
