Uni Watch Grab Bag

Revere GrabBag.jpg

Coupla things I’ve been meaning to get to, all of them slightly bigger than typical Ticker fare but not quite weighty enough to merit full-scale blog entries of their own. So without further ado…

  • The most interesting thing about NFL spring minicamps (actually the only interesting thing, at least from my perspective) is the widely disparate protocols that the various teams have for their helmets this time of year. Some teams just have their regular, full-decal look, others leave the helmets blank (or blank except for the center stripe). Then there are the teams that identify the rookies via strips of tape, which can be typeset on a regular helmet, typeset on a blank helmet, handwritten on a regular helmet, or handwritten on a blank helmet.
  • And then there are the Browns.

  • Got a great tip recently from Joel Brigham (who does some writing for these guys), who pointed me toward this site, where you can digitally design your own basketball uniforms. Start by choosing one of the stock templates on the right, then custom-colorize it using the options on the left. “I spent HOURS messing with it the other day,” he writes, and it’s easy to see why once you start using the site. I like some of Joel’s designs better than others, but it’s a nifty tool either way. Have fun, and don’t blame me (well, not more than you already do) if you get nothing else done today.
  • • We all know that the A’s have been wearing white shoes for over 40 years now. So when Michael Turner recently wrote to ask if I had any photos of the A’s wearing green shoes in the early ’80s, I said, “Nope,” and privately wondered what the hell he could have been thinking about.

Shows what I know. Turns out there are quite a few shots of the A’s wearing dark shoes on the road in 1982, although it’s tough to say if they include green — maybe (here’s another potential candidate), maybe not.

Interestingly, Dressed to the Nines (which I obviously should have consulted before so blithely dismissing Turner’s query) shows the A’s wearing green footwear on the road in 1983, and what appears to be black cleats in ’81. But for 1982 — the year in which all those photos were taken — they’re listed as only wearing white. (And yes, almost all those photos were of Rickey Henderson, but I also found dark-shod pics of other players, so it wasn’t just a Rickey thing.)

  • When the Padres recently wore their early-’70s throwbacks, which were made by Majestic, you may recall that the pants featured real belts instead of the period-appropriate elastic waistband. That prompted the following note from one of Majestic’s competitors, who prefers to remain anonymous:
  • We actually bid that job. We had a gold fabric that was a little less brassy than the one Majestic used. The problem is that Majestic gives each team such a large marketing credit that most clubs want to get all of their uniforms as near as free as possible. It’s very frustrating for us, because we really feel like we are being “played” by clubs a lot of the time, but Majestic hands over the big money to squash guys like us. Ninety percent of the time, these [throwback] projects are being handled by the [team’s] marketing department, and they generally lack the experience to execute a uniform’s details flawlessly.

  • A few days ago I asked about the origins of “Clemson cut” pants, which brought this response from DJ Gordon:
  • My father, Doug Gordon, was the head equipment manager at Clemson University from around ’83 to ’94. The “Clemson cut” pant was originally made by a clothing company called Powers. The rep from Powers would come help my father fit the entire baseball team with their pants. The Clemson cut is called so because Clemson was one of the first schools to fit players by their waist, calf, thigh, and inseam sizes. They were custom-fit for each player to fit their legs. Most players got three pairs each, due to the fact that they always wear the white-styled pant. The web site you have shown [in the link above] is odd to my father, because the Clemson cut pants never had stirrups in them. I myself am an equipment manager at the University of South Carolina, so I just happen to have an interest in the whole uniform genre.

Gotta love that — the family that equipment-manages together, uh, what rhymes with that? Too bad about the whole calf/inseam thing, though — this may have been ground zero for the ruination of baseball hosiery.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Very telling fold of the fabric here (as spotted by David Fleming). … “I went to my brother-in-law’s senior art show at Washington University in St. Louis this past weekend,” writes Dan Brown. “While I was there, I saw this painting by Elena Rodriguez.” Man, someone needs to commission Elena for a big mural, pronto! … Veeeery interesting blog entry here regarding the cost of English Premier League sponsorships (with thanks to Dominic Litten). … Here’s an eBay auction with another jersey featuring the number on the “wrong” side. … Some really sensational uni-related bits (and, by any standard, some very cruel moments of sexism) in this video of Babe Ruth teaching women who to play ball (nice find by Crhis Manes). … Good article here regarding cyclists pulling their socks up high (as forwarded by Lee Wilds). … Yesterday I linked to a photo gallery from the shooting of the Ernie Davis biopic. Turns out that a reader who prefers to remain anonymous was watching the film shoot through a fence and took some great additional pics, as seen here, here, here, and here. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: I didn’t realize that the Rockies originally had logo-emblazoned stirrups! The photo is taken from this timeline. … Cathy Reeder sent along some interesting Florida Little League photos, including shots of a kid with mismatched socks, a kid with no socks, and a team that wears its uni numbers on the caps. … Remember Frank DiPino? Yeah, I barely do either, but apparently he wrote, “Get Somebody OUT!” on his underbill, and you can have that cap for your very own here (nice find by Eric Stangel). … Not only do the Diamandbacks and Astros now have similar color schemes, but as Chris Shastid points out, they have similar problems regarding the integrity of their lettering across the placket. … The Yokohama Bay Stars will be wearing these uniforms during the Japanese interleague games. “They’ve added a brick-red panel and color to the cap, plus a gold neckline,” writes Jeremy Brahm. “But look at the serif on the 2 — it would look fine without it, but it is huge.” … Great contribution from Larry Brunt, who writes: “I’ve been reading a bunch of baseball picture books with my four-year-old, including Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man, by David Adler. The illustration that accompanies the text of him taking himself out of the game that ended his streak is here. I’m quite impressed that the artist (Terry Widener) included the historically accurate sleeve patch the Yankees wore in 1939 for baseball’s centennial.” … Thomas Harris notes that there’s some good stuff going on in the Coastal Plain League (“The Nation’s Hottest Summer Collegiate Baseball League”), including some killer stirrups being worn by the Thomasville HiToms and the completely endearing logo being used by the Columbia Blowfish (who also appear to have one of history’s greatest mascots). Even the league’s logo gets it right. … Bosox pitcher Julian Tavarez has been wearing Big Papi slippers in the clubhouse (where he’s also been spotted wearing a “Manny Being Manny” T-shirt) and even in the dugout on days when he’s not pitching.

Hard to believe, but for as much as I’ve become engrossed at times in the “Dressed to the Nines” site, I never paid much attention to the shoes depicted. But today’s links to the A’s pages have opened up a whole new “can of worms” for me to obsess (and waste some quality time at work) about!

The “hottest summer collegiate baseball league”? I doubt it compares to the Cape Cod Baseball League, which boasts a ridiculous number of alumni in the majors.

Also, gotta love the Cornell lax teams link.
      More photos link.

You can check out the Cornell socks in the final four saturday vs. duke :)
That Columbia Blowfish logo is top notch.
As is Blowie the mascot.

Looks like the Blowfish do have hats with that logo on them. Totally have to find one of those to put next to my Lansing Lugnuts hat.

Little League photos, including shots of … a team that wears its uni numbers on the caps.

Anyone who has ever coached any little league team understands instantly the logic behind numbered basball hats–reduces fighting over which hat belongs to which kid.

I love the last part about the Papi slippers in the dugout. How about a section on the weirdest, funniest or worst dress in the dugout by player or manager. I vote for the “tonight the part of Groucho Marx will be played by Bobby Valentine” cameo in 1999.

Those uniforms are great. The socks match the stripes on the shorts and the sleeves…if they got rid of the red side panel the unis would be perfect! I’m not much of a locross fan, but I’ll be rooting for Cornell just because of the SOX!

I believe it’s a tongue in cheek reference to the actual temperatures they play in.

While it’s most certainly not the case, I’d like to think the socks are a nod to the link, which the team has link all season, including this game at Duke.

Yah, but couldn’t they just write the number on the inside of the hat? I’ve just never seen numbers instead of a logo before. Plus, the pitcher appears to have some sort of star on his hat…wonder what that is for.

When I was a kid, we had these things called magic markers, and we’d write our name on the inside band. Or some kids just bent their brims so goofy you just knew it was his.

How do these players think that looking so stupid is cool or attractive? I just don’t get it.

Anyone catch the Yankees-Red Sox game yesterday? They were talking about the “C” on Varitek’s jersey and how he didn’t want to wear it, but the team pursuaded him to wear it.

Speaking of “C” jerseys, these are for sale on Ebay:

I wonder what the deal is with the Browns helmets this year. Last year’s team wore gray facemasks for the 60th anniversary…..so either Joe Thomas in mini-camp was wearing one of last years helmets, or they are keeping the gray facemask this season.

To everyone who’s ever had trouble with links–

There could be a few reasons why it doesn’t work, but if you use IE7 make sure you click the yellow information bar to “Temporarily allow scripted windows” when you first click the link button; you will then have to click the link button a second time once that is done.

I’m sure the kid forgot the socks and just wore the anklets because that is all he had. I coached girls soccer and during that time my trunk was full of extra socks, jerseys, first aid kits and even extra couple pairs of cleats…kids will be kids.

…and a team that wears its uni numbers on the link

Not that I’m a fan of that uniform, I’ve never thought about the idea of numbers on the caps–and I have to admit I’m a little intrigued; kinda reminds me of numbers on football helmets (which, if done right, I kinda like).

When I played Little League way back when, we usually had a plain cap with no logo. Instead, the sponsor’s name was a HUGE patch on the back of the jersey (think: Chico’s Bail Bonds). Would’ve been kinda cool to have your number up there just to break up the plainness.

It has been said already but the main reason for numbers on the caps of little leaguers is so that when you are in the dugout kids knows whose hat is whose. Our t-ball team did not do that but in our first game we played a team that did. They had their numbers on the back of the cap, above the adjustable strap thing, and it looked really sweet. Kind of like numbers on a football helmet, those same kind of small numbers with the same effect.

Can somebody please explain why Japanese teams have anglican letters and numbers instead of Japanese font and numbers?

Numbers on football helmets – ok on the back, or the side if they’re the old Charger helmets. As for the little kid, he’s rocking the link look.

      Couple things:

The Baystars’ ‘B’ reminds me of link

and I believe the Columbia Blowfish is a reference to Hootie and the Blowfish who formed at the University of South Carolina. I could be wrong.

If you’ve ever coached T-Ball or Coach Pitch, and you gather your group of 15 little 7 or 8 year olds, when you look down at them, all you can see are 15 identical oversized hats, and you can’t see a single face. The numbers are a great idea.

Love the Petersburg Generals and the Wilson Tobs.

From the Colorado Rockies official timeline:

“Included on the home uniform is purple pinstripes, making the Rockies the first team in Major League history to feature purple stripes.”

There’s something to be proud of, eh?

When Tavarez wore the “Manny Being Manny” shirt it was the kind with Manny’s stats on the back, implying what Manny’s really known for is his incredible hitting, as opposed to being some guy who doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing and has wacky hair or whatever. So it was more of a mocking of stupid people who don’t realize Manny’s an awesome ballplayer because they can’t see past his three crazy antics a year.

Saw some stolen fonts yesterday. Chris Pronger’s assistant captain ‘A’ is in the same font as the Army Hockey uniform/typeface.

Note the tail on the top of the ‘A’.

IIRC the Rockies’ logo stirrups were pretty much only visible in the first season road and home openers. After that, guys lowered their cuffs (I almost said lowered their pants, but that could be misconstrued). High-cuffers in subsequent didn’t display logo and now they don’t even have stirrups. Just another reason to be steamed at the current inept ownership/management.

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…..

Some of the regulars may remember me causing an uproar by linking to an ugly drawing of the uniforms of the Bay Area Toros, an independant Leage Baseball team near my home. I’m happy to say tha opening day is near and they have provided better pictures of the uniforms. The uniforms are normal pinstripes. I think the numbers follow the theme well, but not too much. I’m not a huge fan of the BA on the side of the hat. The logo could be a little less caroonish, but overall I’d say they look pretty good. I’m going to opening day, so maybe I’ll take some live shots and link to those next week.

Oiler fans always seem to be depressed. ;-)

A couple of questions: 1) What is a Tob, as in Wilson Tobs from the Coastal Plain League? and 2) Why are baseball cleats so God-awful clunky and goofy looking? I understand that the needs are a bit different from soccer but come on couldn’t they players wear something a bit sleeker?
Can somebody please explain why Japanese teams have anglican letters and numbers instead of Japanese font and numbers?
Alan, baseball was introduced to Japan by Americans in the late 1800s and uniforms have been lettered in English from the beginning. Japanese writing was also used, though, and when numbers came in the 1930s, Japanese numerals were used on occasion (link, and I see that Distant Replays has beaten me to the punch in making link), but when WWII began, English lettering (and many English words like “ball”, “strike”, etc., but that’s another story) and English-based team names were frowned on and numbers were removed entirely.

After the war, when relations with the US improved and the leagues started up again, professional uniforms, front and back, were made entirely in English. Sometimes high school teams will have the school name in Japanese, but the numbers on the back are in a standard font and color, velcroed on, so there’s no room to experiment with Japanese numerals.

This gets me to thinking… are there any professional sports jerseys in the world with non-European numerals on them? All the international competitions use Latin letters and European numerals just about exclusively, and while there are many other numeral systems (Chinese/Japanese, Arabic, many in India; many in south Asia), the sports world avoids them. Chinese/Japanese numbers in particular would be easy on the eyes if you’re nearsighted, since the problem of 6, 8, and 9 looking alike from far away is solved.

For the Arabs, on the other hand, maybe link look too similar from far away. Anyone from the Middle East here?

I know this isn’t uni related, but I remember all the talk about team logos on beer bottles and saw this today…

The Seahawks’ Qwest Field will be the first NFL Stadium (and possibly pro stadium) to not serve Coke or Pepsi, but will rather serve the Seattle-based Jones Soda. The key to the deal being a patent that the company has to put pictures on the label…so they can put the pictures of actual team players, not just logos, on the bottles that they’ll sell.

      Paul,

You gotta me totally hooked on the Anderson Joes sweet game cap. Just got off the phone with them and they said they’ll only have an adjustable fit cap for sale. We gotta find a way to change that!!! “The Game” makes the hates for entire league. Think it’s worth going to them to see if they can provide one or should I keep working on the team. Any advice from the “Uni Master” would be great!

I know it sells well, and that’s why they may be keeping it. I never noticed the shoes either, thats cool that they go to that lenght for the sake of accuracy. In those pictures paul linked of the A’s the shoes look almost magic markered or colored in. I’ve done a statistical analysis on all 16 playoff teams in a statistic I call “efficiency,” and am running at a pretty decent clip for prediction so far. It doesn’t include the goalies, and obviously, Giguere is the stronger ‘tender. Skater-wise, the Senators are vastly superior both offensively, and more importantly, defensively, winning more faceoffs and blocking more shots. Giguere will keep the Ducks in games, but can’t do it all himself. Sens in five, but close scores in every game. Incidentally, the Sens were my pick to win it all from the very start, as they were miles ahead of everyone else in the playoffs during the regular season. That said, the Ducks did make it past two teams that were statistically better than they were, but not by nearly as much as the Sens are. It should be a fun series to watch!

At least they (the Cooperstown Drips Fitted Cap) well represent the Reds’ season as going down the drain.

Little League photos, including shots of … a team that wears its uni numbers on the caps.

Anyone who has ever coached any little league team understands instantly the logic behind numbered basball hats–reduces fighting over which hat belongs to which kid.

Yah, but couldn’t they just write the number on the inside of the hat?

I’m going to go out on a limb and venture a guess–and I do so with all respect–that you haven’t much first-hand experience with the sheer frenzy incident to a dugout filled with hyper 10 year-olds, jacked-up on sugar fruit drinks, scrambling to find all their “stuff” as they take the field. It’s a mess, to say the least. Numbered baseball caps reduces one aspect of the mayhem.

This is in response to Daren, post #101:

I’m fairly certain the Arizona Diamondbacks also had a logo on their stirrups at least during their few first years of existence. I recall an article in the local paper that addressed the frustration with then-manager Buck Showalter’s set of rules, one of which was to have the uniform pants tailored a certain number of inches above the ankle so that the link on the stirrups could be prominently displayed.

The article pointed out that this was one of the (many) gripes that the ballplayers had with Showalter, who had implemented the rules handbook while with the Yankees (among other rules was an NBA-style dress-rule: Wearing jackets and ties when in public, including in airports when traveling).

Who would have thought? Buck Showalter: A manager who Gets It.

It’s alright, Jon. I’m not that concerned about those words. :o)

I’m just a hater of the trap. I’ll give credit where it is due: the Devils played that system to perfection, and won some Cups because of it. I just hated it because it killed the free-skating flow of the game. I’m all about the beauty and violence of the game. I hated the clutching-and-grabbing.

      From yesterday:

As far as I know, yes, it is NFL mandated (at least until this year). When an NFL team has two memebers with the same last name, each player must use the first initial as well.

This has NEVER been a rule. Since the NFL started requiring names in 1970, the Steelers have never used initials, whether it was four guys named Davis in 1973, Aaron and Marvel Smith for the past few years, or anybody else.

Turns out Mr. Celery has nothing at all to do with Wilmington Blue Bluerocks and is quite possibly drug induced…

I would have to say the Astros train (now filled with oranges) at The Juice Box is a much better idea for home run celebrations! (as lame as it is…) Perhaps we could get Otto from Syracuse to run around – he is supposed to be an orange. Produce is produce.

The hawks fan(s) have been cheering since long before the ’91 ASG. They have also been doing it ever since. NBC not knowing snot about the Chicago tradition attributed it to cheering for the troops. I would agree that it might have been louder then normal, but thats hard to quantify sice you couldn’t hear anything after the first notes of the song ever.

Gotta jump in here, as you’re talking about Serpentine, one of my favorite typefaces. Serpentine is used on the red and black Senators’ jersey nameplates and numbers, but it is slightly different than the Army logo and the Ducks “A”. The link conference logo is also written in Serpentine as are a couple individual school logos. During March Madness, I saw Serpentine all over the place, and it does show up well from a distance.

Upon further inspection, it looks like the Ducks may have had a custom font created, as their uniform numbers also have that little dash in the upper left.

The Yankees traditionally wear a black armband when someone in the Yankee organization passes away; in this case, Cory Lidle, who died in a plane crash during the offseason.

The president of VT was interviewed tonight on YES. (YES is the Yankees Entertainment and Sports “network” where Yanks games are shown.)

The VT patch on the Yankees cap looked to be on the left rear quadrant. Kind of a dumb place for a patch. Why wouldn’t they stick it up front in a place of prominence?
