‘C’ Section

derek_lowe_654.jpg

Derek Lowe is scheduled to pitch tonight for the Dodgers. I’d been looking forward to this, because several readers reported over the weekend that Lowe was spotted in the dugout during last Saturday’s game with a captain’s “C” on his jersey. Unfortunately, nobody provided a screen grab or even specified the inning in which Lowe was visible, and I haven’t had the patience to scroll through the entire gamecast to find the appropriate shot (or the heart to ask Vince to do it), but I figured we’d all get to see the C when Lowe took the mound this evening.

The thing is, I couldn’t find anything on the web about Lowe having been named the Dodgers’ captain. So yesterday I called the team’s PR office, where a spokesperson let all the air out of the balloon: “He’s not the captain. That was just a joke that the other players played on him — they put the C on his jersey as a prank.” Too bad. This means Jason Varitek and Mike Sweeney maintain their status as MLB’s only current C-clad captains. (Derek Jeter is also a team captain, but he doesn’t wear the designatory letter.)

The reason the Lowe situation was so intriguing, of course, is that pitchers almost never serve as team captains. C-clad pitchers are rarer still, and C-clad starting pitchers rarest of all — rare, but not unprecedented. Back in 2000, the Cubs had four captains, all of whom wore C sleeve patches (a confusing protocol, since “Chicago” and “Cubs” both start with C): Sammy Sosa, Mark Grace, reliever Rick Aguilera (you can just barely make out his C here), and starting pitcher Kevin Tapani (the best shots I’ve been able to find are here and here).

So at least for a day there, Lowe was an honorary member of a very exclusive club. Maybe he’ll be a real captain someday — but first he really needs to something about his pants. That’s no way for a person of stature and responsibility to dress. Meanwhile, if anyone recalls roughly when they showed Lowe during Saturday’s game, I’ll do a screen grab to preserve the moment for posterity. (Update: Thanks to a helpful post in the comments section, I was able to locate the shot — look here.)

Uni Watch News Ticker: Nice gesture last night by the Nationals, who acknowledged the shootings at Virginia Tech by wearing Hokie caps — or, more specifically, a variety of Hokies caps (much like the assorted first responder caps that the Mets wear annually on September 11th). The Nats actually wore their regular caps in the 1st inning before coming out in the Virginia Tech lids for the top of the 2nd, because the truck with the collegiate caps got stuck in traffic (details here). Additional pics here, here, here, here, here, and here, courtesy of Jason Reddish (who asked me to mention that he has a new blog). ”¦ Daniel Kinderman and Mike Toriello both report having received the following communiqué from USA Baseball: “In this survey, we will ask you to help U.S.A. Baseball select its uniform and headwear logo design. When considering the logos presented to you, please select the one you feel would best represent Team U.S.A. when they compete in national and international team competitions such as the World Baseball Classic and the Olympics.” Four options were given: the current design (Kinderman’s choice), and then this (Toriello’s choice), this, and this. Anyone else think these logo all look like postmarks? Not a decent cap in the bunch, either (and I swear to god, if anyone posts a comment about the flag sleeve patch being “backwards,” I’m gonna just blow up the site). ”¦ South Carolina just had their spring intrasquad game, which provided a look at their new Under Armour uniforms, and holy crap do they look awful (with thanks to Ronnie Poore). ”¦ The dates that the English Premier League teams will be unveiling their new kits are here (as provided by Dominic Litten). ”¦ Yesterday’s post about neckties led Scotty Johnson to point out that early pro bowlers also wore ties (an action shot would be better, though — anyone..?). ”¦ My old ESPN.com colleague Darren Rovell has done a small rundown of cool minor league baseball logos. ”¦ Andy Head was looking at some old Seattle sports photos and came up with this early baseball shot — note the beret-like caps. Nice early football shot, too. And another ballplayer wearing a tie! ”¦ William Blevins notes that Yankees emergency starter Chase Wright was wearing Sean Henn’s glove last night. ”¦ Not only does Felix Pie have the coolest baseball name in years, but he already had midseason-caliber pine tar on his helmet yesterday, even though it was his MLB debut (good catch by Bryan Redemske). ”¦ Another ballplayer wearing sunglasses at night: Hitoshi Tamura of the Softbank Hawks (as spotted by Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Speaking of which, there’s an explanation for Morgan Ensberg’s night shades about halfway down this page. ”¦ Quasi-uni-related item: Vikings CB Cedric Griffin was arrested after a scuffle that began when he was ejected from a nightclub for wearing droopy pants. ”¦ Maybe someone should arrest Micah Owings, too. ”¦ Several of the Rangers were still wearing the Jackie Robinson helmet decal last night. ”¦ Very nice article here about the history and evolution of baseball gloves (with thanks to Billy Duss). ”¦ The Hawks may be getting new uniforms. ”¦ Reprinted from last night’s comments: Check out this old hockey ref photo. Yeah, he’s got a tie, just like the officials whose photos I linked to yesterday, but the most interesting thing is that he’s holding a bell in his left hand, because early hockey officials used bells, not whistles. ”¦ Hey is that where the term “bells and whistles” came from?

This may have been posted last night, but did anyone see Willie Randolph, and then the umpires make Freddie Garcia change his glove last night before the Mets/Phillies game. It was bright red. He went into the dugout and came back with a black one. I was watching on SNY, and their announcers thought they had changed the rule about colored gloves. They thought you could wear any color as long as it wasn’t white. Does anyone know anything further?

Also from that game, Jose Valentin was wearing glasses for some, but not all of the game.

D-Lowe is far from captain material, and I highly doubt we’ll EVER see that C on his jersey legitimately. While a terrific pitcher on the field, he has zero leadership qualities and some serious character issues. (Cheating on his wife with an LA news reporter, notorious for drinking and gambling to excess…)

Staying on the captain’s issue… does anyone know if they name captains for Olympic hoop teams, and if they have some sort of Uni-designation?

In case anyone is confused by Paul’s comment on the flag patch, here’s an explanation of why the reverse flag on the right sleeve is correct: link

I cant believe rovell didnt includelink. They always had one of my favorite logos. Also one of the coolest link he’s not the philly phanatic though

Looking at the new Premier League number font guidelines link, and while I’m absolutely against the idea of a league forcing every team to use the same font, it at least looks better than what they had last season.

In particular, I like the proportions: giant 253-millimeter* numbers, yet the names are small and unobtrusive at 53 mm, or only about one-fifth as big as the numbers. Massive surname lettering can link and look quite ugly.

I wish the league would let the teams show some originality. Baseball has already forced all the teams to use the same manufacturer — next thing you know, Bud Selig will be implementing something like this in baseball and eliminating the venerable Cubs and Red Sox fonts!

    * – Why 253? Why not a nice round 250, or 254 (which is exactly 12 inches)? Was it some kind of compromise between the metric faction and the English faction? “OK, then, we’ll use a number that isn’t round for anyone!”

Uni number tribute I didn’t think I saw yesterday:

Jaromir Jagr wears 68 for the year of the Spring Rebellion in Czechoslovakia.

and C-clad starting pitchers rarest of all — rare, but not unprecedented

Maybe someone can help with this but I seem to remember a 1971 baseball card or mini book that came with the cards that said Dick Bosman, a starting pitcher, was the captain of the Washington Senators.

Didn’t see the game (living in Washington and rooting for Philadelphia is about 27 kinds of pain in the arse) but the explanation was in some of the game writeups. Garcia’s glove was actually red and black, and you aren’t permitted a two-tone glove. Had it been all red, or all black (as the substitute was) then he’d have had no issue.

On the subject of the Nationals wearing the VT hats: absolutely fantastic. That was one of the classier things I’ve heard of a team doing to show support for anything.

The shot of Derek Lowe with the “C” on the chest was during the start of the 1st inning during Saturday’s telecast on FSN Prime Ticket.

I have heard another reason for the reverse flag. On the side of things in motion(vehicles, planes, or on sleeves) the flag is supposed to look like it is affected by the wind. So, on a person moving forward, the flag on the right sleeve should be reversed.

Nationals’ Ryan Church is a UVA Grad. He was quoting as saying it was an honor to wear the VT hat and that it shows you how insignificant in state sport rivals really are. Kudos to him.
In case anyone is confused by Paul’s comment on the flag patch, here’s an explanation of why the reverse flag on the right sleeve is correct:

    From the link,

“To wear our country’s flag properly, the field of stars should be worn closest to your heart.”

I thought it was to indicate forward motion, which is why the flag is always painted “backwards” on the right side of link and link.

Great job by the Nat’s but I wonder if the NFL would ever let a team do the same with thier helmets? (I know it’s a little different sizing of helemets and such) This is a league that wouldn’t let a Colt where black hightops when Unitas died

As a Virginian who has been hurting since Monday, it did my heart good to see the Nats and MLB do that last night.

Here is the section of the U.S. Flag Code that talks about the display of the flag on the sleeve. Here is the link.

    §176. Respect for flag

    (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

The unis may be ugly, but I think the caps are pretty sweet. The saxaphone logo is unique and nicely done.

At last night’s Rangers/Thrashers game, I noticed that Greg deVries’ name appears on his sweater with the “DE” in smaller font, but in capital letters. You can just make it out here: link and here: link (you need to scroll down a little on this one).

This is interesting in and of itself. However, it is especially interesting when you compare it to the name on his sweater when he was with the Avalanche: link
As you can see, with the ‘lanche the “de” was in lower case letters. This happens to be the way his name appears on the Thrashers’ roster.

Maybe I’m an Under Armour apologist because I’m in Baltimore (and a Terp), but I don’t think the USC unis are that bad. I think they are superior to the wrap around bib look Nike has been parading around…and I’m sure during cold games their sleeves will be the same color too!

USA unis – Why does the shirt say the full “USA” and the hat just the “US?” Pick one and go with it! I like “USA” on the jersey and maybe a nice graphic only flag style logo for the hat.

Ready for your boring fact of the day, as brought to you by tessa? :P

“Bells and whistles” actually comes to us from pipe organs. The more expensive your pipe organ, the more “toys” it has, including bells and whistles. You can see the “bells and whistles” (and drums and such) part of one expensive pipe organ link.

Props to the Nats for wearing the VT hats. I was surprised to see such a variety of hats, but no matter… the thought is what counts.

The USA baseball unis are all awful. Why don’t they simply do a baseball script United States across the front (script with tail end underlining words, similar to the Dodgers unis or the Canseco era Texas Rangers)

I was at the Braves/Nats game last night. I really thought the Braves might protest some of the V-Tech hats. A couple of their releivers, Ryan Wagner and Jesus Colome, wore the hats with a bright orange front. I thought the Braves might consider that a bit too distracting for a pitcher to wear, and ask them to wear an all-maroon hat.

USA baseball should go old school, and design a classic uniform for the team. We invented the game, after all. I’ve always been a big fan of Stanford’s unis, and I think a simple “United States” across the front, with an interlocking “USA” cap would be great.

Regarding the USA Baseball unis. I like the current jersey, and in fact bought one during the WBC last year. The caps are awful, though. They should either come up with a logo of some sort that doesn’t include any letters, or find a way to superimpose the letters onto each other, like the middle one on link page. I’ve never been a fan of long, horizontal lettering on caps.

The only time the Atlanta Hawks get any press is when they change their unis. They should change them every month. What a sorry ass franchise. NBA tries to turn this thing around every three years but the boat always sinks… I’m thinkin’ the new Clippers here.

Teebz, when you read this, can you explain some of the duties of the captain (and assistants) in hockey? I know goalies can’t wear the C or A anymore because they would have to leave their crease to speak to refs, which they’re not allowed to do. What else do captains do?

This brings up an interesting thing that honestly kind of bothers me, and that is teams putting the flag on their uniforms in general. The flag has no place on the uniform of a professional or college sports club. Yeah it seems to be the case. South Carolina basketball wears Nike. I actually can’t tell what Auburn wears. It doesn’t look like a big name brand such as Nike, Adidas, or Reebok. If it were a big name brand I know I would see a logo creep. Anyone have solid evidence? I think this phenomenon might be due to UA growing as a uni brand. I’m sure we’ll seem them pop up at some school soon. They’re aleady invading baseball. I can’t actually remember if their is a basketball team with UA gear. Anyone know?
Teebz, when you read this, can you explain some of the duties of the captain (and assistants) in hockey? I know goalies can’t wear the C or A anymore because they would have to leave their crease to speak to refs, which they’re not allowed to do. What else do captains do?
I’m not Teebz, but I can help…
    Per the NHL rulebook:
    – Only the captain may discuss any point related to interpretation of the rules.
    – Officially, only the captain can request a stick measurement of an opposing player
    – When two players on the same team have minor penalties that end at the same time, the captain designates who should return first (including who should return if a goal is scored)
    – Officially, the captain lets the ref know which player will sit for a bench minor, goaltender penalty, or penalty assessed to an ejected player
    – The captain lets the refs know who will take a penalty shot, if awarded but where a particular player was not fouled (i.e. defenseman closes hand on puck in the crease)
    – The captain is also the primary person to whom any issues from the refs should be addressed, though it is customary for them to skate over to the bench and talk to the coach directly (as many refs do nowadays)
    – Captain also acts as players’ representative in bringing up issues/concerns to the coach/GM.

I think that about covers it ;)

The yahoo captions are garbage. A week or 2 ago I linked to a picture of Dr. J at some European charity race car event. The caption said he was an “American Football great”

It’s only Charlie Manuel wearing the Virginia Tech hat tonight. He grew up in the area.

WRT the All-Star jersey, the all-star teams wear the uniform of their own team am I right? They only wear jersey’s of their league for the HR Derby

    Joe Thomas to do UA:

Despite a personal e-mail from commissioner Roger Goodell, Joe Thomas rejected the NFL’s repeated written and verbal invitations to attend the draft-week festivities in New York. Thomas wants to maintain a years-old tradition in which he spends draft day fishing for coho salmon on Lake Michigan with his dad. The league repeatedly has reached out to Thomas — who recently signed a lucrative endorsement deal with Under Armour and will be profiled in an upcoming Sports Illustrated issue — but it has met the same type of resistance as a defensive end going against him. Thomas hasn’t budged. Nor will he. Thomas doesn’t believe a trip to New York will do anything to enhance his draft status; he could go as high as No. 2 to Detroit or as low as No. 5 to Arizona.

Im not sure if this has been mentioned before….but the flag is backwards on the jersey because it is on the player’s Right sleeve. This gives the impression that when the person is running, the wind is “flowing” through the flag as if a breeze is blowing the flag in that direction. If it were on the Left sleeve, the flag would appear as it appears on pretty much every other item.

I think most teams had green underbills up until the late 1980s. My Dodger cap from that era had a green underbill.

I believe the transition from green to gray took place in the late 80s/early 90s.

As to why Juan Pierre would have a green underbill in 2007, I do not know.

Couldn’t agree more. Maybe not full-on stirrups, but at least the rolled-up pants look (“knickers” if you will) should be absolutely mandatory. The choice between team-issue socks or stirrups would be up to the players.

Also, super-baggy jerseys would be a no-no as well. If MLB has to hire team tailors to ensure that each player is appropriately fitted, then so be it.

Not a one of those USA baseball unis looks like anything but crap. How about something a little more tasteful? We don’t need stars and stripes, that’s what the flag is for. Maybe just blue unis with white script “USA” shadowed in red. And yeah, those are terrible lids.

Doesn’t that refer to actually using the physical flag as a fabric/material? And wouldn’t the American National Team for the National Past-time be a “patriotic organization?”

I think the second option is the best choice, just because the font reminds me of the US military (to fit the charging flag). If we’re using the uniforms to defend our nation’s sport, it makes sense.
This brings up an interesting thing that honestly kind of bothers me, and that is teams putting the flag on their uniforms in general. The flag has no place on the uniform of a professional or college sports club. I say that from the standpoint that it’s just plain disrespectful to put a flag on a uniform that is designed to get dirty and often ends up on the ground. I seriously cringe every time i see a team with stickers or patches representing the flag on a holiday. Just my $.02…
I disagree with you but i can understand your point except for your point about wearing a flag patch on uniforms that will get dirty or wind up on the ground. I say this because i’m fairly certain that most of the US infantry troops wear flag patches, and they tend to get much dirtier than your average ball player.
