It’s basically a bunch of pricey memorabilia, but the photos are a gold mine of old-school uni goodness, including plenty of killer examples from the worlds of baseball (here, here, here, and here), football (here, here, here, here, here, and here), basketball (here, here, here, and here), and hockey (here and here). Plus there’s old advertising, a truly amazing series of mascot-based bobbleheads (here, here, here, and here), some old pennants — even a pennant pillow! Speaking of old uniforms, last month I wrote an entry about baseball in Alaska. It included a link to this photo, showing a player getting ready for the annual Midnight Sun Game, played at night, without lights, on the longest day of the year. Now longtime Uni Watch supporter Doug Brei has provided some additional info and photos about the Midnight Sun Game phenomenon:
The Midnight Sun Game is still alive and well, and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. It’s still played every year in Fairbanks, under the natural light of the sun (they’ve never turned the lights on for a Midnight Sun Game), between the Alaska Goldpanners ABL team and a team from the “Lower 48.” They begin the game at 10:30 p.m. each year on the day of the summer solstice. At midnight, they stop the game and everyone stands up and sings the “Alaska Flag Song,” Alaska’s official state song.
Here’s a recent article on the Midnight Sun Game, along with an article about the 1906 game. And here are some photos from the 1908, 1933, and 1949 games.
Brei also shed some light on another item from that original Alaska entry. As you may recall, it included a link to this photo, whose caption said it was an “indoor baseball” team. Indoor baseball was a new concept for me, so I asked if anyone knew more about it.
Several people offered bits of information in that day’s comments section. But Brei has now provided the most complete account: “Indoor baseball was big enough in the first two decades of the century that Spalding actually published official guides on it,” he wrote. He also provided the following excerpt from the 1903 guide, which explains some of the game’s interesting equipment-related nuances:
The game of indoor base ball was invented in Chicago in 1887, and came about through a frolic among the members of the Farragut Club, who, in a spirit of fun on Thanksgiving day of that year, threw an ordinary boxing glove around the hall, which was struck at by one of the boys with a broom. Some twenty members had assembled, as usual on holidays, and George W. Hancock, seeing the possibility of a new sport, said in a bantering way: “Say, boys, let’s play base ball,” and the wrestling mat was hauled around cornerwise and a broom obtained. One of the boxing gloves was used for a ball, and, with the boys in position, they commenced their sport without rule or wisdom, but there was great fun. ”¦ It was thus that Mr. Hancock gained the title of “Father of Indoor Base Ball,” for he went home and thought out some rules that would equalize the different points of the game and directed Augustus J. White how to make a ball which could be seen at night and fill all the requirements of the game. And so the sport was evolved.

The Twin Cities confab will take place at the always wonderful Nye’s Polonaise Room (figure on 7:30ish, but I’ll firm up the details when we get closer to the actual date); haven’t yet settled on a venue for the Chicago gathering — stay tuned.

Why not? Why can’t players of all races, creeds and colors have the opportunity to appreciate the importance of what Jackie Robinson did and stood for? Don’t get me wrong, I hate Eric Byrnes and his “I dive for everything even though I don’t have to” bullshit nonsense, but I won’t hate on him for this.

Those pictures of mascot-centric bobbleheads brought back fond memories of my childhood… I once owned a Cardinals bobblehead; an “updated” version of the one pictured, featuring a red hat (introduced in 1964) and the familiar “Birds on the Bat” logo. I showed a precocious uni-fixation by making a small #9 and a “Joe T.” nameplate to honor one of my favorite Cards at the time… Joe Torre!
I have one of those Cardinals bobbleheads sitting just a few feet from me as I type this! My Grandpa gave it to me a while back; he got it on a special giveaway day at old Sportsmans’ Park in 1963.
I had no idea it was worth so much…

It strikes me that baseball is the only sport where one could even consider allowing an entire team to wear the same uniform number… after all, numbers weren’t even used as recently as the 1920’s. (I forget when the Yankees introduced the uni number, but I’m sure someone here will know.)
Sadly, Larry Doby (the first African-American in the American League) is being overlooked again; although the Indians will all wear his #14 on the 60th anniversary of his MLB debut.
As long as people remember why Robinson and Doby’s entrance into Major League Baseball was (and is) important, I applaud as many players and teams wearing Jackie’s #42 as possible.
Why wouldn’t Eric Byrnes want to honor Jackie Robinson? Why wouldn’t ANYONE want to honor Jackie Robinson? I suspect that the reason that all of this “42” business has gotten out of hand, according to Torii Hunter and other MLB players, is that a lot of the guys were fighting to be the one who had the honor of donning no. 42.
Thank God for Jackie Robinson. Without him, we might have missed out on seeing so many great non-white players – Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith, Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds, Dave Parker, Willie Stargell, Dave Stewart, Kirby Puckett, and my personal favorite, the great Carlos Baerga. How many Josh Gibsons did we miss out on? So sad…

*cringe* Never liked them. A few years back (maybe more than a few), my Babe Ruth ball team was named the “Commonwealth Electric Expos”, and our uniforms had the exact styling of those Montreal uniforms – 2 thick stipes down the legs and shoulders, team name/logo on the left, numbers on the right, etc. Exactly the same except for the colors. Of course, the colors were
the same as our company sponsor which were… brown and yellow. Ugh. It was horrible.
The 1st of the two years I played, they actually went the extra ugly mile and had us wear yellow sanitaries with brown stirrups, fortunately, the 2nd year we went with white sanitaries and brown stirrups.
I think I have a team pic laying around, maybe I can scan it so that the atrocity can be seen, but I’ll refuse to identify myself – I’m trying to leave those days behind me!

I live in Montreal and was one of the few fans who went to the stadium on a regular basis to see MLB at a ridiculous cheap price (as low as $5 CDN, usually around $8 CDN with a sit anywhere policy) Right now, it is snowing/raining with no promise of any type of baseball played with wooden bats. The closest place to watch a game are AAA Ottawa Lynx and Short Season A ball in Vermont, which has a link. Take advantage of your local ball clubs.
See you at Nyes, Paul. You are very brave entering the heart of Purple Country, but Northeast Minneapolis is a great spot to have a beer. There’s lots of nice little hole-in-the-wall bars here, not all of them Polish. Psycho Suzi’s is a trip too, great pizza and atmosphere. And you may even see a few Packer fans running around to help balance out all that dreadful purple!

In St. Louis (where I’m originally from), I strongly suggest O’Connell’s Pub on Shaw & Kingshighway, just south of I-44. Great atmosphere, a fantastic house ale, and possibly the best burgers in the world.
For your Chicago visit, I recommend Goose Island’s Wrigleyville brew pub. Nice pub, locally brewed beer, in the shadow of a classic ball park.

Very Baggy Uniform Sighting
Last night while flipping through channels – National vs. Braves, nationals pitcher Colome, #43, was wearing a very oversized uniform, both jersey and pants. You could not see the belt because the jersey overhang was so extreme, but it must have been there because the pants would not have been able to defy gravity without a functional belt.
Maybe this was a uniform choice based on performance – it is hard to see the release point when it is a gray blob making the pitch.
Or, maybe this was a need for comfort due to an all over skin rash?
Or, maybe lost luggage?
Or, maybe this was a fashion look-at-me statement?
Whatever the reason, the baggy trend seems to be picking up steam. Sorry, no photos.
Imagine my surprise to see link on Uni Watch . . . it graces the top of my entertainment cabinet at home, right behind the miniature replica of the Horseshoe and signed vintage Bengals helmet (the decanter isn’t in mint condition, a little gluing was needed from an unfortunate dusting accident). You never know what you will find on Uni Watch.

Damns, I’m going to miss the Chicago Uniwatch gathering by 1 day. As far as Goose Island goes, I’ve always had better experiences at the Clybourn location. It might lack the coolness of the being a half block from Wrigley, but the food and beer seems a little better there.

Nice thought, but I’m only gonna be in town for one night, and I’d rather not spend it in an indoor baseball stadium (especially since ballpark seating isn’t very conducive for socializing with a large group). But maybe Nye’s will have the game on the TV!

I’ve noticed this year there are some link sporting a very link look this season, but the king has been link.
I have just had my first disappearing post experience. Of course, there is a 90% chance that it is “user error.”
Interesting article link about the players wearing 42. Mostly old news, but an interesting focus on the grassroots-iness of the movement to wear 42. Also, the article notes that players wearing 42 will not have their names on their jerseys. I had not thought about the names (being a ‘jingoistic’ Yankee fan :P, I am not in the practice of thinking about nameplates). I think this will look strange – some players on a team with nameplates, others without. On the other hand, the ‘strangeness’ will bring more focus to the 42, which is good.
Man, Minneapolis is going to be a good time! Color me jealous (a nice hunter green jealous, of course).

You are bang on! A lot of the hockey fans in Montreal dislike the fact that the club has a mascot, let alone an old unemployed baseball mascot. However as one of the Montreal sports journalist said, he may be a little annoying at games, but what Youppi! means to kids in hospital beds cannot be measured. Youppi! even managed to make link.

wow, only here would someone notice something like that as I did. As soon as he took the mound I was laughing at how ridiculous he looked in his PJs….I’m not sure the pants and jersey were any baggier than say Man Ram’s, but they sure looked huge seeing as Colome is pretty thin…

It would be a real tribute if they used the correct lettering and not that stock number and letters crap!
Personally, Eric Byrnes sucks so bad, that I don’t see it as a tribute to Jackie Robinson. It’s more of a disgrace.
On a lighter note, Paul mentioned Manny’s habit of stealing things from teammates on hot streaks in his ESPN column today. This would probably explain him wearing David Ortiz’s “34” wristbands a couple of years ago.

I just wanted to say how funny it is that you decided to go with link rally cap picture for your column today. The players are from a high school I played against when I went to school in Japan. You can see a sign in Japanese that’s posted on the back wall of the dugout. They were the American School in Japan (ASIJ) Mustangs and I played for the St. Mary’s International School (SMIS) link. If I remember correctly I think we ended up winning that game. Thanks for taking me back in time to the glory days of high school as I sit at work doing absolutely nothing. Man, do I miss organized baseball.

I remember reading that they were the same trunks (SI maybe). The author even took the creative liberty to say that they may have even shown a dull spot where they had skidded across the canvas in the Ali fight.

Please don’t remind me of ‘Nos Amours’, aka the Expos. I live in Montreal and was one of the few fans who went to the stadium on a regular basis to see MLB at a ridiculous cheap price (as low as $5 CDN, usually around $8 CDN with a sit anywhere policy) Right now, it is snowing/raining with no promise of any type of baseball played with wooden bats. The closest place to watch a game are AAA Ottawa Lynx and Short Season A ball in Vermont, which has a link. Take advantage of your local ball clubs.[/quote]

I work for a company that makes movie posters and we are working on a film called “Leatherheads”. For a photo shoot we just got in a few old football helmets from that Antique Athlete website… good quality and seems authentic from the outside, but I am pretty sure they did not have elastic restraints inside the helmets back then. (by the by – First comment, big fan)

Terry wears five pairs of socks during every game because of superstition; in one game during the NCAA tournament he did not wear his traditional five pairs and did not score a single point.
Terry makes it a point to sleep in the game shorts of the next day’s opponent; he has 22 pairs of shorts (including Mike Bibby’s and Gilbert Arenas’s) and is working to get one pair of shorts per team. He was pictured with several pairs of his shorts in a May 2006 edition of Sports Illustrated.

Paul, I love the superstitions mentioned in the article. Ever since T-Ball I’ve always worn my socks high and jumped over the foul lines before the game. Now I’m coaching a little league team and I would look pretty ridiculous wearing a full uniform with stirrups, but i still don’t step on the foul lines. There are different types of Haka. One is historically based while the other is more recent and translated from Maori the lyrics have more to do with the Rugby team than with Maori tribesmen of the past.
I posted this a week or so ago in the comments section, but it was late at night and I’m not sure how many people saw it, so here it is again, three videos of the All Blacks peforming the Haka:

The first video is the newer Haka (controversial when premiered in 2005-2006 because it features a throat slashing gesture directed at the other team at the end). The second video has the more commonly performed Haka.
In some of the video, you can see the reactions of the other team (particularly of the French team in the second video…I love it, their faces range from ‘can’t wait to get past this’ to ‘oh my god, those men are scary’).
I remember reading about how in 1997 I think, two members of the English team rushed the All Blacks while they were performing the Haka to show that they accepted the challenge and were not intimidated.

Yeah, but the Colts didn’t make them wear blue in Super Bowl V — the NFL did (at the time, the Super Bowl’s designated home team was required to wear its colored jersey; nowadays it’s the designated home team’s choice). Yeah, Matthew S., I saw them the last time you posted. That is what cemented my everlasting loyalty to the All Blacks. I mean, I love that their name is All Blacks. Really? It’s hard to tell with the quality of the video. It still doesn’t look right with the players in full gear. Maybe if they had been wearing all-black unis, I would have felt differently.

Good, of all people I didn’t want you to miss out on that. The haka is a pretty stirring sight to see on video, I can only imagine what it’s like in person.
Also, apparently in November of last year, the All Blacks had a disagreement with the Welsh Rugby union on when they would perform the haka prior to the match. So in protest, the team performed the haka in the locker room and video was then shown of it over the stadium big screen. This severely disappointed the fans who turned out wanting to see the haka performed on the field. Rugby unions have begun to contend that the haka gives an unfair advantage to the All Blacks because it ‘pumps them up’ and gives them an intimidating appearance prior to the match.

Dont know the medical explanation, but they hel releive stress, pressure, pain on knees. Usually only seen in basketball, although I’ve seen them on the soccer field as well

Those look like the link. I had a few of them from my days as an NBA ballboy. They help fight off the little pains that can come at the base of your patella tendon after hard activity (running, cutting, jumping, ect.) that they called “jumpers knee”
Glavine just told Mike and Mad Dog that baseball allows pitchers to carry hand warmer packets in their pockets to keep the hand warm on cold nights, I never knew that.
The Wikipedia entry on the rally cap may be right about its first appearance in the Major Leagues in 1985, but it was around elsewhere years earlier. My high school teams wore rally caps (with little success), and I graduated in 1984.

in regards to the haka dance, it made me think of this. the trinity euless trojans do the dance before the games. they wear all black so it doesn’t look dumb, plus they have like 20 players who are actually Polynesian. here is a video, i think, im still not good at doing links link they played Permian a few years back and spanked them. also i wore a knee band thing back in HS when i hyperextended my knee in football. it didnt really do anything for that, but on the other hand our trainer was really dumb.

That is a cooperstown collection patch which is on all Mitchel and Ness Jerseys, that is a early 1980’s Willie Stargel batting practice shirt reproduced by M&N. It is a pull over with 1/4 zipper on the front.

About the haka, i think a few ears ago (around 2001 i think) the entire English team stood in a line about 2 foot away from the all blacks – they recieved alot of critisism came their way for disrespecting them)

pretty sweet vid, but i still like the all blacks more because that is where the maori are from, plus in the second video look at the guy thats doing the yelling, he scares the shit out of me. also, without the pads you actually see their muscles, which is also really intimidating

I would imagine that Tiger Woods’ red-on-Sunday thing is going to become a lot more prevalent in the near future, thanks to the link. True he had the red collar showing, but after that headwind dropped his ball in the bunker on 17, I don’t think Woods will be treating that black sweater kindly. The thing is…if this guy is the richest athlete on the planet, why doesn’t he have a red sweater?

What Tiger wears during a Major is a far more complicated thing than meets the eye. Of course he has input and in the end can wear whatever he wants. It is decided at least 6 months in advance. That way when the Nike rep comes into the pro shop in the fall for the spring line and in the spring for the fall line he already knows what Tiger will be wearing each day of the major. And the pro shop can have those exact shirts available. Tiger’s fans and Nike fans will very often come in and say “I want the shirt and vest Tiger wore on Friday” or something similar.
I knew my stint in the golf business would come in handy some day.

We all seem to agree that the high socks look is best, Arod has never looked better, and I’ve always loved Jim Thome. but I think the slightly baggy pj pants looks better than the skin tight ones that some people wear. thos look really bad. and the tighter long pants on the reds, god I love them too, but they tend to look like sweat pants, not something a guy makein a million bucks should be wearing. the road pants need a stripe on them or something

The sad part is that they’re selling the Mets snow white jerseys with Jackie Robinson’s number. The last few seasons the Mets have tended (though not religiously) to wear pinstripes with blue caps on Sunday home games.
At the least, if they do use the snow whites on Sunday, they should wear the blue caps/undershirts/socks.

Can I say how much this bothers me every time I see a “Jeter” Yankees jersey? It kills me to see Yankee fans sporting their jerseys with names on the back. I actually asked someone at a sporting goods store about why the names come on even the Yankees and they said that it would cost more to not have the name. I don’t think he actually knew, he was probably just referring to the authentic.

I just got a little info on a website (I’m still trying to figure out how to do the linking thing on comments). Take a closer look at the picture. The red part forms an “e”, the blue part forms a “b”, and the whole logo is an “m”. It stands for “Montreal Expos Baseball”.
Remember when Paul did that contest for making the new Washington uni’s and one of the entries was just turning the “M” from the Expos upside down to make a “W?” That was BY FAR my favorite!!
And Gagne was wearing the old grey cap tonight in his first game, where the M’s decided to break out the uglies… er… alternates.

jones, yup, it is much better with black unis. I gotta agree with Dan that the All Blacks do it the best and are the most intimidating sans pads and helmets.

The 3-color hat is a big part of what makes it cool. I also like the lower-casee ‘expos’ lettering.
BTW, Andre Dawson is wearing his stirrups like I used to do in little league (1977-1981).
