I like birthdays. I think it’s cool that we each get a day that belongs to us, a day when the rest of the world owes us right of way. My own birthday was last week, and I threw myself a big party, like I do every year. At various points during the festivities, I looked around the room, saw all the completely amazing people I’m fortunate enough to know, and felt like a really lucky guy. And that’s a great way to feel on your birthday (even if nobody gives you a cool uniform-based cake like the one shown above, or like this one).
I wasn’t thinking about any of that when I got ready to choose the winner of the Tracy McGrady All-Star jersey raffle. I just did what I always do: I tallied the number of entries, fed that figure into the random number generator at Random.org, and used that number to determine the winner based on the numerical order in which the entries were received.
The name I came up with was Joseph Sandora. When checking his original entry to get his shipping address (which he didn’t provide — yo, Joseph, where should I send the jersey?), I saw that he’d included a note, which read as follows: “Will it help any if I said you were announcing the raffle winner on my birthday (March 26)?”
Yes, apparently it’ll help quite a bit. I mean, seriously, how cool is that? Even those of you who didn’t win should be able to be happy for Joseph, whose birthday is off to a very good start. My suggestion: Go buy some lottery tickets right now, Joe — the birthday gods are definitely with you.
Big thanks to all who entered. And there’s more where that came from: Uni Watch intern Vince Grzegorek will announce the winner of our latest Distant Replays gift card contest after the NCAA tourney champ is crowned, and then I’ll have another jersey giveaway — this one for free, no ticket purchase required — the week after that.

Uni Watch News Ticker: According to a small item at the bottom of this article, the Washington Huskies “will don retro uniforms honoring the team that beat top-ranked Minnesota in the 1961 Rose Bowl” (as spotted by Brian Terreson). … A Maryland high school is wearing throwback baseball uniforms, complete with some pretty rad hosiery (with thanks to Ben Penserga). … Nice bit here about Anibal Sanchez’s underbill inscription (with thanks to David Conley). … That’s Dwight Eisenhower, top row, second from the right (good catch by Jacob Reed). … Michael Orr, who tipped me off to the Alaska photos that I showcased on Friday, notes that the dog teams in the Iditarod wear little paw booties. … Frequent comments section contributor Teebz has created a dynamite historical roundup of NHL jersey patches for his blog. The team-by-team breakdown is presented in three parts, which you can find here, here, and here. … Really stupid critique of women’s hoops uniforms here (as spotted by Paul Hirsch). … Reprinted from Saturday’s comments: Barry Zito warming up while wearing a watch. … Jeremy Brahm notes that infielder Hirotoshi Kitagawa of the Orix Buffaloes has a disconcertingly white glove. … Meanwhile, Norihiro Nakamura, who’d previously been saddled with uni No. 205, is now down to a more “respectable” No. 99. … And Hidenori Itoh of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows may make the team with No. 105. … Not so bad after all. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Latest Dodger to wear a regular game cap with colored-in side panels is Randy Wolf (compare his cap to the real BP caps). … Also from yesterday: Really great article here about teams that wear orange. … Ryan Howard’s blue striped shoes experiment didn’t last long. … Latest NBA team to do the Noche Latina thing: the Lakers, who wore Latin American flags and a jersey patch last night (additional views here, here, here, and, rather bizarrely, here, here, here, and here). … I’ll be out of the house for most of today (lots of errands and a dental appointment — ugh), so talk amongst yourselves.
I was waiting to see those full uniforms from that Maryland Highschool, but I guess the picture that is provided is prety much all we need!
not too keen on the white stirrups with yellow sanitaries. maybe a switch to more classy yellow stirrups and white sani.

and what’s with one pair of white shoes?
dang, i’m up too early: only two comments..
Ryan Howard only wears the blue-striped cleats with the Phillies blue jersey, which is their away BP jersey. He went to the same cleats but with red stripes to wear with the red jersey, which is the Phil’s home BP jersey. It will be interesting to see during regular season away games if Howard wears the blue-striped cleats during BP (to match the blue BP jersey) but then switches to the red-striped cleats for the game.
An article devoted to Orange without a mention of Syracuse. That’s stupid. They’re the only team named after the color!
Did anyone notice in that Ryan Howard photo that the Twins first baseman is wearing a regular cap and not a BP/Spring Training cap?

Or if he wears the blue-striped cleats during interleague games, when the Phils wear their blue-brimmed caps.

They just had a piece on Sportscenter about Michigan’s “Fab Five” the coach was talking about the baggy shorts and said that at that time Arkansas had baggier shorts “But we got all the blame and credit for them”
I can’t remember who said it in the interview but one member said that his shorts weren’t really baggy, he just always kept pulling them down. Thought those tid bits were interesting and you might enjoy them
I do NOT anxiously await the Huskies beaking out those retro-unis against USC. Why not ramp up the Ugly Factor and bust them out against Oregon?
Paul, I saw link photo and I was sure you would approve.
I find that article about women’s uniforms mildly insulting, as did most of the people who commented on the original site. It’s pathetic that she refers to these women as goddesses and in control of their own bodies, but then she wants to go and make them look more like she does. It’s like telling your wife or girlfriend, “Hey, you look great, inspiring, and in control. Now how about a facelift?” She’s trying to make them fit a feminized standard that most women have worked very hard to move past; they’ve attempted to attain some semblance of equality and of mutual respect. Pray to whatever god you believe in that nothing like what she wants will happen because its a step in the wrong direction.
Sorry if this has been mentioned on one of the weekend threads. But check out these link (Minor NSFW warning)
I want to root for Ryan Howard, I really do. Good kid, presumably clean, who plays the game the right way…except for those damn pants! Dude, your slacks are dragging in the dirt!
If it takes MLB putting 30 tailors on the payroll to make sure the players wear uniforms that look presentable and, well, uniform then thats what needs to happen.

That comment was from Chauncey Billups (who was a Buff). It was more to show the influence the Fab5 had on HS kids of the era than anyting else.

neal s- I saw that one too but hesitated a bit in posting that one. There’s a bunch on the kusports forums offering it as an “excuse” to why KU missed so many layups.
The blog about the hockey jersey patches unfortuantely has a number of errors and omissions in it.
Buffalo never did wear the 30th anniversary patch, Florida did not wear an inagural season patch and Minnesota never wore an inagural season patch either, but the 2004 All-Star game patch they did wear was left out.
Sometimes patches are made for sale, but not worn on the jerseys.
link is a good source to confirm what patches were worn when.
link is the link for the NHL jersey patch resource.
Happy 24th birthday, Paul. ;o)
Congrats on the jersey, Joseph. Good win.
Ryan Howard’s shoes are, to me, ugly. Why can’t he just go red and white? I understand that blue is part of the colour scheme, but sometimes more is less.
And a big thanks for the shout-out, Paul. That patch round-up was a pain due to the constant discovery of new patches. As I said on the blogs, if any of you find a patch I haven’t discussed, please make mention of it in the comments on my blog, include the link, and include your name for credit. I’ll make sure you get credit.

They also missed a whole bunch on there. If the patch was worn for one game, they do not include it on that website. However, I’ll go back to my research, and verify your findings, Jeff. Thanks for the heads-up.
Here is a great thread on the NHL patch subject from the gameworn.com forum.

Also, the Canadiens didn’t wear the Maurice Richard patch, even though they should have.
Looks like North Dakota won their Hockey Regionals in their swift jerseys:

I have been through that site many times. The problem isn’t so much that they wore the patch, but rather finding an image of one. This is why I am willing to give credit to those who find them… because I could not.
The Maurice Richard patch was worn during the ceremony to honour him during warm-ups.

I really can’t stand Noah either. I would absolutely love for my Buckeyes to get another shot at the Gators in the National Championship and for Oden to give Noah an inadvertant elbow. Not that I want for someone to be injured, I just can’t stand the guy. Or CBS’s fascination with him.
no, you want to make up for the last two times the Gators EMBERASSED OSU (oops tOSU). Thinking you’re Numero Uno for the whole season and then getting blown out of the building with everyone watching must really take the shine off an otherwise good season.
Regardless, Noah is a good kid. I had a class (in the Religion dept. no less) with him a few years ago. And get this: he went to class (when he didn’t have away games). And he sat front and center. Can’t say that about some of the FB players I’ve had class with.
I dislike plenty of players, especially some of the chumps who come out of Ohio (Mo Clarett, anyone?), but only for their off-court stuff. If you can find a way to fault Jo Noah for his play, do it. But you can’t fault winning.

Paul: I don’t know if you saw this, but yesterday during the Tigers-Yankees’ spring training game, A-Rod had high socks. They were pulled high, like as high as Curtis Granderson pulls them. I was excited. Hopefully this trend continues into the regular season.

I had a PoliSci class at OSU with Mike Doss, who attended every class. It was spring quarter so no away game situations to deal with. I’ll give it to you that OSU has had some chumps come out of the program, specifically Maurice Clarett, as you pointed out. I’m sure Florida’s probably had some too though.
And really, no, I don’t hate Florida for beating the shit out of the Bucks in the National Championship game. I could make some excuse about Ted Ginn getting hurt and the entire OSU offensive gameplan surrounding him but the truth is that OSU was simply outplayed on both sides of the ball to the point of embarrassment. As it’s been pointed out already in these comments, it’s the cocky, “look at me” attitude that Noah seems to have on the court that I hate. I feel like I’m rambling, so I’ll stop now.

thought the oops may have been for your spelling, thanks for putting the mistake in all caps . . . just a bitter tOSU fan here i guess. weighing in on Noah, i think CBS’s fascination is that he is the only player on FU (intentional) with a personality. one thing for the gators, at least they had the sense not to wear that horrifying gator print
I saw link on ESPN.com and I got to wondering, why hasn’t Zumaya had his flames colored in? Cool tat for someone who throws 104. Then I thought, maybe it would be a “distraction issue” and he would be forced to cover them up by wearing sleeves to the wrist. sorry, slow day around here. BTW, thsoe BP caps look ridiculous!
It’s hard for me to take “look at me” from Noah’s celebrations when he rarely, if ever, leads the team in shots taken. He almost always leads them in hustle or “heart” plays, which are usually the ones that get the yelling and the chest pounding.
Example: towards the end of the Oregon game, Noah was matched up with one of the Oregon guards between the 3point line and midcourt. He stripped the ballhandler and eventually forced the backcourt turnover. Now, I’ve got to say that that’s not typical play from a 6-11 Power Forward. At the college level or NBA. The celebration that comes out of Jo Noah when he makes a play like that is the same kind of celebration you see in youth soccer, when kids act like every goal is a masterpiece of athleticism.
So, Noah’s antics might be immature, and are probably REALLY GRATING if you’re a Gator-hater. But they don’t come from some sort of egoism. He’s not T.O., he doesn’t try to disrespect other teams. He plays to HIS fans.
Now, if he were to, say, take Thad Matta over his knee and spank him like a toddler, that’d be “look at me” behavior. And you can’t blame him for being goofy looking.

Thanks, Mike, for saying what I feel in a much more diplomatic manner. Except, I found the blog entry really insulting. I don’t care if it’s tongue in cheek; it’s just reinforcing the stereotype that women are vapid airheads who don’t know the first thing about sports and should just worry about if their asses are too big in the vera wang frock they just bought.
If women want to be totally sexualized in sports, they should just try out for cheerleading and forget playing.
Ok. On a lighter note, I have a question for the shoe fetishists out there. I want to buy a pair of black running/walking/cross-trainers that aren’t made by Nike. A little help? I have the hardest time finding all-black women’s athletic shoes. Funny, huh? A woman asking a bunch of (mostly) guys for advice on shoe buying.

As for the question of the UCLA Dance Team vs. the USC Song Girls, I’ve got to give it to USC hands-down. The UCLA girls are gorgeous and dress nicely, but those sweaters and skirts at USC really have me sold on them.

His tattoos get a thumbs up from me. I like the flamethrowing imagery and how he can relate it to his job as a pitcher. Much better than when basketball players tattoo a basketball on their arm, which doesn’t look good at all.

Kenny, true. I have been really lucky with my tats not fading, but I am not in the sun so much. However, at least he could enjoy them in his time off. If he used plenty of sunscreen, then the fading would be minimal.

Hi all – look who’s back! I’ve been performing other duties at work and unable to check in, but I’m here!
Minna, I seem to recall a pitcher with a LOT of tattoos that they did NOT make cover up – the name escapes me though. I don’t see how they can make you cover them up – the uniforms have more color than the tattoos do, and tattoos don’t swing like a necklace or anything like that.
Banker Bill! I was wondering where you went. Glad to see you have not left the fold.
There is a guy, don’t remember whom, that had tats all the way down his arms and had to wear long sleeves. I agree, though, that the tattoos aren’t distracting like blinging necklaces or earrings.
Justin, nice link, but those are some ugly tats.
Minna has ink?
*faints*
I’m currently watching the World Swimming Championships and they make all the competitors wear a placard emblazoned with the meet sponsors on the front of their warm-ups when they go up for the medal ceremony
It sort of looks like a number placard in Track but without a number, just sponsors. I’ve never seen something like that before.
link is the only pic i could find.

Anthony, Minna has four inks. I thought this was common knowledge.
bj, too bad they don’t have those shoes in my size (I have flippers for feet).
Thanks, guys, for the help. I knew I could count on you.
just a bitter tOSU fan here i guess. weighing in on Noah, i think CBS’s fascination is that he is the only player on FU (intentional) with a personality. one thing for the gators, at least they had the sense not to wear that horrifying gator print
Please stop with the tOSU stuff. It’s pretentious.
minna,
Usually your local sports store will carry some selection of all balck shoes (for referees, umps, etc). If that doesnt work I know for sure that NB makes a lot of walking/XC shoes, and their colors are usually pretty basic. Side note, I have a friend who works for New Balance in the marketing dept. and he hinted that theyd be exanding their market to more athletic type shoes with more colors, and a more aggressive, “nike” feel.

Rob Dibble… he was on Pros vs. Joes this weekend on Spike, and his arms are a canvas of work. He has more now than he did during his playing days.
Justin Miller of the Blue Jays was told to cover up the tattoos on his arms last year as well.

patrick, yeah, for guys. Last time I shopped, I couldn’t find a single pair of women’s black tennis shoes. This time, I used EastBay (thanks again, guys!), and I found great shoes. Now, if I wanted PINK shoes, those I can find.
I am not into aggressive shoes–I’m aggressive enough without my shoes pushing me to be more so. Plain black, that’s all I want. Lucky for me, I like New Balance.

Minna,
If you have your pictures stored on webshots, or flickr or whatever, what you have to do to link directly to the image and not the page is this (on a PC):
Right click the image, click properties. Then to the right of where it says Address: (URL) Copy that address(make sure you get the whole thing, pull your mouse down, the address is usually longer than what is displayed) and use that as your link. That way you get something like link instead of link

Teebz, your knowledge has no bounds. It IS a “distraction issue”. I still don’t see it with link.
BJ, you’re the man. Let the Gator-haters hate all they want. It’s hard to be humble when you’re the best. I’m sure no one would care about Jo if the Gators weren’t defending national champs and in the Final Four again. Winning breeds envy and since they can’t say anything bad about his game, they call him ugly and act like grade-schoolers. The world would be a better place if all the athletes in the world showed half as much intensity and desire to win as Jo.
Speaking of pitchers and tattoos, it looks like this has been addressed in the link.
I’ve installed a new comment spam catching program. It doesn’t use the “captcha” image, which many of you dislike. It checks the comment against known spam websites, words, IPs, etc. and it should work much better.
A non-spam comment might get caught every once in a while. My advice would be not to use the “URI” field for websites you’d like to link to for your comment, use only to enter your personal blog or site.
Thanks,
Ek

I do like the adidas jerseys that most teams have, like Real Madrid and the Spain white ones. Problem I have with them is EVERY team has them, so theyre not different.
And I was looking at the old blogs on this site and one mentioned the nike designer for uniforms and it’s very cool. Fun to see what your schools uniforms would look like on a different college’s style

Ironically, Minna, Rob Dibble was Miller’s inspiration in becoming an ink-filled pitcher. Being one of the Reds’ “Nasty Boys” was what made Miller a fan of Dibble the pitcher, and having his arms covered in tattoos was what Miller a fan of Dibble the guy.

We did this in college. As an adidas school, we wore all adidas on game day but our practice pants were old reebok pants from before the adidas contract was signed.

Those may be leftovers from the Nike years. Nike had a contract with all the Hockey East teams a few years ago, and had the swoosh on all the jerseys, pants, and most helmets and skates as well.
Since then, teams have switched to other various brands, and Boston College has gone back to Reebok, except obviously for the practice unis.

That’s not how the actual jerseys really come off. The Nets jerseys don’t translate well to replica versions at all, starting with the cut of them ever since Reebok took over and adidas after them. All of their replicas have those wide shoulder cuts and it’s just annoying to have that when the authentic and swingman jerseys are cut with thinner shoulders. I refuse to get replica NBA jerseys anymore, if I buy a jersey it’s a swingman one so my jersey collection has dropped off big time within the last few years.
Does anyone know exactly what glove colors are banned for pitchers? Every spring Pedro has an awesome link one for practice but i’ve never seen him use it in a game. I think Daisuke is using red though. Anyone know?

Which other NBA replica jerseys are horribly translated from the authentic? The Washington Wizards’ is pretty bad because the left stripe is lost. The absolute worst, though, is the Hornets. We do not have a teal or yellow glob down our sides. It is a thin tri-colored stripe. Yuck. Unwearable. My little brother has a replica Chris Paul jersey with the wrong sides. Can’t stand it.

In the game today against the Reds Varitek had a catcher interference called on him and the announcers wondered if catcher interference was one of the things on his “Brady style” wristband…(a list of japanese translations for Matsuzaka).
they showed a pic of the card in it on the broadcast. 4 columns (2 pairs of 2 columns): english w/ japanese translation next to it. but it looked like the japanese was in kanji. I guess during a mound meeting they’d point to what they meant?
Dice-K rocking link Figured I’d keep contributing to Paul’s sunglasses article.
One brief correction: if Hidenori Ito makes the Yakult Swallows’ varsity squad, he won’t be able to keep number link. “Developmental players” who get called up have to switch to one or two digits — this is why Nakamura went to 99.
I want to clear up my posting pictures woes. It’s not that I can’t link, but that I’ve never used Flickr or Photobucket, thus, I do not know how to show pictures I have taken myself. There is the additional problem of it being difficult to take pics of my tats myself as they keep getting washed out. I would just link to pics of tats that are the same/similar, except all my tats are originals.
I will figure it out one day.
