Uni Watch Cold Case File

Big thanks to everyone who attended last night’s Uni Watch party in San Francisco. Looking forward to fun tonight in Dallas (the Ginger Man Pub, 7:30pm).

Meanwhile: I recently got an interesting note from reader John English. “Found a YouTube link to some late-season and World Series footage of the 1929 Cubs,” he wrote. “The Series footage is toward the end of the clip and features the Cubs against the eventual champion A’s. But what’s the big black circle the A’s are wearing on their backs?”

The video, which was shot on a home movie camera, is amazing — check it out. The “big black circle” English is referring to isn’t easy to spot, but you can see it as a dark splotch on the backs of some jerseys at the 2:49, 3:09, and 3:14 marks of the video.

I didn’t know what to make of this, so I consulted longtime Uni Watch comrade-in-arms Tom Shieber, who curates the Hall of Fame’s Dressed to the Nines online exhibit. He solved the mystery in relatively short order. Here’s his analysis:

This was a fun one to research. I wasn’t aware of this video but really enjoyed watching it. The “1929 World Series” billing, however, is incomplete. The park is definitely Wrigley Field, but not all of this footage is from the 1929 World Series.

Here’s my research: In 1929, the Cubs’ wishbone “C” had an image of a bear cub inside it. In 1930, however, they used “UBS” inside the wishbone “C” to fashion the word “CUBS.” The footage from 00:30 to 00:43 fairly clearly shows the Cubs wearing the 1930 design. This was the first clue to me that the video showed more than just 1929 World Series.

From about 1:05 to 1:42 or so, you can see the Cubs carrying a flag and, right behind them, a club that definitely has something on the back of their jerseys. The next clip, from 1:43 to 2:05, shows that what the players had been carrying was a “Champions / National League / 1929” pennant, and it’s being raised on the flagpole next to the scoreboard. Note that at the top of the scoreboard, it shows that the “CUBS” are playing “BOSTON.” Also, New York is at Pittsburgh (game in progress around the 6th inning or so), Brooklyn is at Cincinnati, and Philadelphia is at St. Louis.

Put everything together and it’s clear that this footage is from Flag Day (June 21) in 1930. The Cubs paraded toward centerfield with the 1929 NL pennant, followed by the visiting club, the Boston Braves, who in 1929 and 1930 wore their Indian head logo on the back of their jerseys [remember, most teams weren’t yet wearing uni numbers at this point — PL]. Indeed, a quick check of Retrosheet shows that on June 21, 1930, the clubs noted above all played one another. Indeed, the partial linescore for the Giants/Pirates game even matches up. [”¦]

From 2:06 to 2:37, the two teams then parade back to the infield, the Cubs on the third base side, and the Braves on the first base side. From 2:38 to 3:14 or so is various action from that days doubleheader. You can even see Cubs southpaw pitcher Bud Teachout deliver a pitch from 3:11 to 3:14.

Soon afterward, the footage switches to pregame and game action from the 1929 World Series. Note that at 3:29, the bunting you’d expect to see at the World Series [which was absent at the 3:07 mark] is clearly visible. The rest of the film appears to indeed be from the 1929 World Series at Wrigley Field, though I am not sure if it’s Game One (October 8) or Game Two (October 9).

So the “big black circle” was actually the Braves’ rear-jersey Indian head logo. That’s another one of those uniform details that I had only seen depicted in illustration templates, never in an actual photograph. In fact, if not for the “Dressed to the Nines” templates, I probably wouldn’t even be aware of the Indian head (it’s not shown in the Marc Okkonen book on which the “Dressed to the Nines” templates are based). When I mentioned this to Tom, he pointed me toward this photo. Thus endeth the lesson, at least for today.

Uni Watch News Ticker: South Carolina’s football teams will be outfitted by Under Armour next season (thanks to Jim Lichty). ”¦ Good shot of a hockey helmet outfitted with a football mask here (not quite as good a photo as this, but still”¦). ”¦ Excellent article here about the new U.S. Army uniforms. ”¦ The Indiana Ice of the USHL wore Colts-themed helmets on Tuesday night (with thanks to Chad Stegemiller). ”¦ Last week I reported that the Chargers and Dolphins might be tweaking their logos. The Chargers have now confirmed that news (with thanks to JoJo Tarantino for the link). ”¦ Joshua Eisenberg notes that Gregg Easterbrook’s latest “Tuesday Morning Quarterback” column included the following note from one of Easterbrook’s readers: “My alma mater, the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, is poised to make its DIII debut in 2008. ”¦ [C]heck the cool-looking helmet. The obvious question: How can you have a scuffed-up, battle-worn helmet when your team has never played a down?” ”¦ Great catch by Fernando Fuentevilla, who notes that this photo appears to show Norv Turner wearing Raiders shorts with his 49ers shirt. ”¦ Anyone know why the Ducks and Sharks both wore white at home during this week’s home-and-home series?

link an official statement from Coach Spurrier about the Under Armour switch. It’s in the middle of the quote list.

I do not think that Norv Turner is wearing Raider shorts. They look to be the same shorts Alex Smith is wearing and that logo appears to be the NFL Equipment shield.

Agreed with posts two and three. Smith is wearing the same shorts, and the Raiders’ logo is not as thin and sleek as the NFL Equipment logo.

I photographed a high school hockey game, and do you know what I first noticed when I looked at the goalie? That’s right: the curved blocker.

Thanks a lot, people. Now I have to notice these things.

I think it may be easy to overlook one of the most interesting quotes of that Chargers article:

“Steeg said any changes would not involve powder blue.”

That’s not the link. If you look at Alex Smith’s shorts you can see the same logo. I’m guessing they’re generic Equipment NFL shorts.

I guess the NFL wasn’t too upset with the link after all…

Speaking of football masks on hockey helmets, anyone remember Ellis Valentine wearing link.

Found this shot on link. Lots of time can be spent there. Be careful.
You can even see Cubs southpaw pitcher Bud Teachout deliver a pitch from 3:11 to 3:14.
The pitcher at this part of the video has a black dot on his uniform, so he would be a Brave instead a Cub. Going by the 1930 Braves roster, the lefty is either Tom Zachary, Bill Sherdel, Ed Brandt, or Johnny Cooney. (I can’t confirm which one since retrosheet doesn’t list the losing pitcher for either game of the doubleheader, which the Cubs swept)

The obvious question: How can you have a scuffed-up, battle-worn helmet when your team has never played a down?

They likely had a football program, but played outside of the NCAA, possibly in the NAIA.

Paul, I’ve emailed both the Sharks and Ducks about the white-at-home games. While no official reason is posted on either website, I would hazard a guess that since the Ducks and Sharks are close to one another in terms of locales, that may have had something to do with it.

If I get a response from either team, I’ll post it here.

To add to my own comment…

It appears that there are definatley some “monochromatic” uniforms in the Bears/Cardinals footage.

Interesting also to see all the stripes present on the hockey unis–the other team appears to be the Leafs (from what I can tell on the chest logo, but I could be wrong). I also love the pre-zamboni ice cleaning.

Why do the Boston Braves have pilgrim hats on the sleeves of their jerseys? Seems to be out of theme to me.

Then again, I’m fine with sharks that play hockey and dolphins wearing football helmets, but still…

It’s pretty obvious that the Blackhawks are in the dark uniforms… but what’s that team in the white? The arm- and leg-striping pattern would suggest the Boston Bruins, but from what I can see of the crest, it doesn’t appear to be a Bruins “B”.

One of the YouTube commenters suggested the visitors were the Toronto St. Pats (who became the Maple Leafs,) but could that logo be Detroit’s “Winged Wheel”?

    DOS A CERO! Muhahahaha!
Fantastic game for the US over Mexico last night. I do kind of like the Mexican kepper Osvaldo Sanchez’s link and the US Kit is a classic.

    Ok, now I’m excited.

To add a little more to the research, I’m more than 99 percent sure that the gameplay is from Game 1. The pitcher in the white (A’s) hat is likely Howard Ehmke, who happened to pitch one of the best games in WS history. From link:
By 1929, he seemed nearly washed up, having won only seven games for the pennant-winning Athletics. It came as a shock when Connie Mack started him in the World Series opener against the Cubs. Mack reasoned that the sidearming Ehmke had the perfect mix of control and slow stuff to keep the predominantly righthand-hitting Cubs off balance, and gave Ehmke time off near the end of the season to personally scout the Cubs. Ehmke struck out a then-record 13 in pitching an eight-hit, 3-1 victory.
I once toured the Soldier Systems Center (aka Natick Army Labs) in Natick MA. It is home of the Camo Lab where the new uni was developed and tested. Really a cool place to see all the different testing Labs and stuff they work on. The Camo Lab has different full sized diaramas set up to simulate woodland and dessert surrounding (when I visited). It has lighting controls to simulate full sun, cloudy days, sunset, all moon phases, ect. I toured the place at the time they had just taken the black out of both the woodland and desert cammies. They had manauines dressed in the settings, turned down the lighting and gave us various night scopes to see how the unis get seen.
Why do the Boston Braves have pilgrim hats on the sleeves of their jerseys? Seems to be out of theme to me.
The Braves wore the patches in 1930 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the City of Boston. link a clearer shot of one on Rabbit Maranville.

The army is also doing away with the green dress uniform and going to the dres blues as the standard dress uniform.

I think that’s the Leafs in the NHL footage. I think you can decipher the logo early on, and if we’re to believe the year of the footage listed, the St Pats no longer existed. According to nhluniforms.com, Detroit wasn’t even using the winged wheel yet.

According to the press release made last October, St. Scholastica’s football program is starting from scratch. Apparently, they never before had a program, at least in “modern” times.

Thus the mystery of the battle-scarred helmet remains ….

I think Tampa should consider ‘revising’ their stadium before anything. Why would a team playing in the sunshine state wanna be closed in 100% of the time?? Beats the shit outta me let me tell ya. Ok it gets hot blah blah blah, it also gets cold in Detroit and Chicago, no roof.!! At least have a retractable roof for pete’s sake. If I recall correctly, the best short short of all time, Derek Jeter, said the Tampa Bay baseball stadium is the worst infield he has ever played on. Not to mention they have speakers and wires and junk up top that interfere in play.

So are they gonna be the Tampa Rays or the Tampa Bay Rays…either way it’s dumb…I went to a game in either their first or second year (met Dick Vitale in the restaurant before the game), I thought it was cool, but I was also around 14 years old, not it’s just stupid to play indoors in Florida…the Marlins don’t!!

I musta been sleeping at my desk, just had this nightmare….

The Under Armour commercial starts, and Spurrier chants the macho “click-clack” in his USC Gamecocks gear just like Tuberville (Auburn) does in his spot, but his team from the DiGiorno commercial follows him in their dresses!.. too weird.

Also, since the NFL Equipment logo looks so much like the Raiders’ can Al Davis file a lawsuit over it?

I thought the same thing. Why blue?

Why is that Michigan State-Illinois this year both had colored uniforms. And last year I remember Cincinnati wore red and Memphis blue. What is the rule as far as uniforms home teams can wear?

West Virginia and Cincinatti (I think) both wore solid colors when they played each other earlier this year (WVU in blue, Cincy in Red). I thought it was kinda strange, but it happens every now and then.

    New NHL jersey notes:

According to Rogers Sportsnet, Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers had the most succinct evaluation of the new uniforms introduced at the NHL All-Star game. He said he generally likes the new look, but that: “They don’t soak up the water like the old sweaters. The water has to go somewhere and it was trickling into my gloves during the game.”

I see this as a huge problem, especially since players from the Minnesota Wild have already been known to change into dry gloves in between periods. I’m quite sure there are more than just the Wild players who do this, so it appears this might be the first of many “water problems”.

Remember kids, the weather(rain) is worse in Florida in the summer than it is in the winter most years. The Marlins have an open-air stadium, and also have more games PPD or delayed by rain than any other team. So the Rays may play in a dive, but it’s a dry dive.

That actually appears to be just a pair of gray shorts with the NFL Equipment logo. Check out Alex Smith next to him, and he’s wearing the same shorts with the same logo in the same place.

Hmm, I thought the NCAA had made a rule stating that one team must wear white jerseys. USC (Southern Cal) and UCLA used to both wear their home jerseys when they played each other, no matter who was actually the home team (kinda made sense, as they both played in the L. A. Memorial Coliseum until 1980). Starting in 1983, the visiting team started wearing white jerseys. I read that this was due to a ruling by the NCAA.

My guess is that they scoreboard had “Cubs” in a permanant spot, much like some smaller colleges and high schools have things like “Tigers” and “Visitors”. I’m assuming they wanted “Cubs” to be at the very top of the board, above all other teams.

I think the Chicago hockey youtube is actually the Chicago Shamrocks and not the Blackhawks)

Here’s a picture of linkthat might help.

The Shamrocks had a bit of an link– as they were directly competing with the NHL for a time – before the owner took over the Detroit Falcons
From the same “YouTube” user that posted the ’29 world series footage there are also these two great clips:

    link and
    link
Looking at that hockey footage and checking with NHLuniforms, I really can’t tell what team the Blackhawks are playing, or even in what year. If we’re to take what NHLuniforms has as fact, then it can’t be 1929, since the Maple Leafs (which is the only logical logo that could be) didn’t have stripes on their white jerseys until 1932. And even then, they had stripes above their logo on the front as well, which they clearly don’t here.

Plus if you look at the Blackhawks, they have a Canadien-esque striping through their numbers, something they didn’t have until the late 30s according the the website.

So it’s most likely NHLuniforms is incorrect, although it’s interesting debate…
The obvious question: How can you have a scuffed-up, battle-worn helmet when your team has never played a down?

They likely had a football program, but played outside of the NCAA, possibly in the NAIA.
Or it is just a Photoshop job. I would guess that the photo was originally for Notre Dame, but that’s just a guess. The Photoshopping is noticeably apparent in the blue stripe. Also the logo on the side does not seem to wrap with the curvature of the helmet, this is most noticeable on the top line of the crest. The crest also seems to be at too much of an angle, the bottom point should most likely be pointed more toward the back of the ear hole, if you tilt your head to so that the helmet looks level this becomes obvious.

Actually Nuk is probably correct, it’s probably the Shamrocks, that would be the most logical explanation.

Clevo did a great job in comment 46 of explaining why the Army is doing away with its green uniforms. Blue has actually been part of the Army’s uniforms since the Revolution and the Barbary Pirates wars of the early 1800s.

Now to jump back to the Title IX talk from yesterday, I just wanted to say to Kerry that I completely agree with what you said at the end of yesterday’s comment section. Minna, I understand your argument that a school can divert funds from other programs to support women’s programs, but the fact of the matter remains that university athletic departments, especially private universities, have a finite amount of money to deal with and it makes good financial sense to invest heavily in the two programs (football and basketball) that provide the greatest profitability for the university. NCAA baseball, as much as I love it, simply doesn’t bring in the same money as football or basketball. So when a university must add a new women’s sport in order to come into agreement with Title IX’s rules regarding proportional gender representation in athletic programs, naturally it will look to cut a program that doesn’t bring in as much money rather than diverty funds from the most profitable programs.

I think we both understand the others arguemnt, but that we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

When the Devil Rays unveil new logos, colors and uniforms for the 2008 season, they likely still will be known by their old last name. After considering a complete change of identity to mark the end of their first decade, team officials apparently will instead drop the Devil and keep the Rays. The new color scheme, expected to be heavy on blue, perhaps with yellow accompaniments, isn’t likely to be unveiled until after this season.

In addition to what Clevo said in comment 46, I found this pictorial history of the U.S. Army’s uniforms. Blue began appearing on officer’s at the command of George Washington who wanted to instill a sense of unity and discipline in his raw colonial recruits by introducing uniforms. U.S. Marines actually originally wore bottle green jackets and were thusly known as ‘Greenjackets’. Blue was predominant in all U.S. Army uniforms leading up to and including the Spanish-American War of 1898. Khaki was introduced shortly thereafter to American troops who were involved in quelling the uprising in the Phillipines from 1899-1902.

This is a very detailed website, everyone should at least skim through it if you’re even moderately curious about the history of U.S. military uniforms: link

The Penguins have a heater made of PVC piping in the runway at games that they can put thier gloves on to dry them out. Sidney Crosby switches out gloves a few times during the game so his stick doesnt slip in his hands.

One – rings do not equate to talent. There are a lot of crappy players that have rings. Jorge Posada has 4 rings, Gary Carter has one…who’s the more talented catcher?

Two – Reyes has no say in the uniform choice – as much fun as he has, I bet he’d play in a tutu if they asked him to.

I think Reyes has more talent than Jeter defensively, but Jeter is a more complete hitter at this point – that may very well change though.

Pretty much. LSU wears purple jerseys at home for the first game of the season and all other non-conference home games. Conference games, the Tigers wear white jerseys. Since LSU is the only SEC team that wears white at home, people rarely see the purple jerseys.

As for the Gerry DiNardo/Vanderbilt situation, that’s true. Vandy denied LSU’s request to wear the white at home…so LSU wore GOLD jerseys for the game and won 35-0. Growing up (I’m only 23) black cleats were standard, until we got ot high school, then I had a pair fo silver and black Valsports that were amazing. Has anyone else noticed this? The Intangibles was more of a rhetorical question, aiming for humor as opposed to actual argument. One doesn’t often use multiple ?s or !s in a serious inquiry, unless its something like, “You slept with my WIFE?? I’m gonna put you in a HURT LOCKER!!”

I’m not saying the ones now are bad, i actually like them alot, the vertical stripe is original and it looks very… official i guess is the word, I just liked the nike template with the circle, it maybe an oxymoron of sorts but i think that template was quite original.

Some coverage last night on Spanish news channels about new Mexican National jerseys which were worn last night in a lose against the United States. The new jerseys are made by Adidas and feature the somewhat signature Adidas stripes down the shoulders. The emblem has also been moved to the side of the jersey from the middle. Soccer players for a while have been moving away from black boots ,I live in Ireland and most top League players in Europe have endosment deals with verious company like Adidas ,Nike Reebok etc and wear there product and dont get much say or care for that matter what colour they are as long as someone pays them to wear them. The US soccer strip has changed colours on almost an annual basis although White seems to be the traditional home strip ,but I remember World Cup USA94 they wore a red and white striped home shirt but in 3 out of the 4 games played by the US they wore a denim looking light blue with stars phasing across it, it was a cool design Adidas made it if my memory serves.

    thanks
    Les

Warren, the U.S. Army’s blue uniforms are not ‘new’ per se, they’ve been around for many years, they just haven’t been worn as much as the greens.

Paul actually did a short blog entry about this last year, I think around Memorial Day. Check the archives.

Brazilian players like Ronaldo and Robinho often wear the yellow/green cleats even during club matches for Real Madrid. A bit on national pride to go along with the club kit.

    Tim,
Adriano had a beautiful pair of yellow boots on against Spain this week. Also, did anyone see Kaka during that game? he had some sort of stretched out turtle neck under his long sleeve jersey. I know its cold this time of year but shouldnt he be used to it by now? I mean Milan isnt exactly Rio….

Just to give everyone a little geography lesson, because it seems like some people are confusing this, there is no city called “Tampa Bay”. It’s just Tampa. And St. Petersburg is a completely different city. Kind of like Minneapolis/St. Paul. Saying St. Petersburg is Tampa would be like saying East Rutherford is New York City. Tampa Bay is literally just the name of the water.

So anyways, the Tampa Bay Lightning (referred as the “Bolts” locally) play in Tampa, but at the link.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also play in link.

But the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play in link. So make sure you don’t refer to the team as being in Tampa, locals would get pissed. They’re already mad that the team has “Tampa Bay” as its name, as opposed to St. Petersburg. Apparently the mayor and such wanted the team to change that, too. (I think that, along with new color scheme and nickname would be great to revitalize and jumpstart the franchise again.)

The dome was built years before the Devil Rays baseball team was ever going to be there (the stadium was built to lure an existing team), so don’t blame them for the domed roof. Stadium building in the 1980s obviously was different than what it is today.

    A few things:

    (1) Dr. Pepper is the #3 cola in the U.S.

    (2) The SEC has a rule that for conference football games, if the home team wants to wear white, the visiting team has to let them do it.

    (3) If you were watching the soccer game, that means you weren’t watching the UNC-Duke basketball game. And that’s inexcusable, even if you do have to put up with Duke Vitale.

I was at the tuesday night game in San Jose, and I was wondering the same thing. I pointe out to my British friend (who doesn’t know TOO much about hockey) that she home teams usually wear the team color jerseys. My guess was that the Ducks equipment team packed the wrong jerseys, and they were forced to wear the darks. The Sharks would then have compromised by wearing their whites. They probably just kept the consistency for the second part of the home-and-home series.

…and the White Sox from Chicago, the Twins from Minnesota, the Giants from SF, etc. But more importantly it was built on speculation, which was part of the 80’s sports landscape philosophy (see above).
The Hoosier Dome was another spec project, modeled after the Metrodome, with the idea that it could be used for baseball. Unfortunately the baseball layout didn’t meet MLB specs, and the upper deck overhung the field by a significant portion.

That ruling also led LSU to wear purple at home for a few years until the NCAA gave then a waiver to go back to white, for the most part ( I know thay wore the purple at home once this past year).

LSU’s home purple jerseys are only worn for the 2nd home non-conference game of each season. Weird, but that’s the rule.
‘Non-conference home game’ is a little redundant in the SEC. Most of the teams only play 4 road games and 8 home games each year. The 4 road games are in-conference because, well, they have to play those.

As far as the UM football style hockey helmets go I think they are a good look. Reminded me of the helmet Olympic mogul skier and Eagles wideout/punt returner Jeremy Bloom wore which was painted like a University of Colorado football helmet where he played before being ousted by the NCAA. Found a decent picture of it, I always thought it was a good look and certainly a creative way to support the team and show some school pride.

Many discussions to which I can add my $.02…

I like blue dress uniforms for the army. I’m not a military guy, but blue is the color of the flag, and the rest of military (as far as I know) also has blue…good for consistency. Green is not one of the “national” colors.

Gold unis with white helmets is an awesome look for LSU. We all know how much we dislike purple, so gold is an improvement; however, if the LSU design team is taking suggestions, I say put a little more purple, as accents on those goldies.

I have no idea why the Ducks and Sharks switched the home and away uniforms, but I love the home white tradition, and am still angry at the league for changing them. I really hope the whispers we have been hearing are true, that they will be switched back next season. My home team, the Red Wings, have a far better white than red. Maybe they switched just for variety’s sake.

I love the amount of research that Tom Shieber did on the video!

But, Flag Day is on June 14th, not June 21st. Woodrow Wilson declared June 14th to be Flag Day in 1916. (Maybe they moved it to the 21st in 1930 for some reason? Or, maybe the players were carrying flags around to commemorate the one-weekiversary of Flag Day?)
