As I recently mentioned in another post, a lot of our knowledge, if you can call it that, of early uniforms is based more on templates and illustrations than on photographs. Case in point: It’s one thing to see this depiction of the tattersall plaid pattern worn by 1916 Brooklyn Robins (they later became the Dodgers), but it’s something else again to see a photo of it — say, this one.
That photo comes from Baseball’s Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon (see link at right), an excellent book recently recommended to me by reader Matt Ciccone. It turns out to be a fertile ground for uni-watchery, as you can see in the following pics (my apologies for the moiré pattern on many of the photos — haven’t had that problem with other books, but it kept happening again and again with this one):
• After the Indians won the 1920 World Series, they wore “Worlds Champions” jerseys the following season, as seen here and here. (Note that this was grammatically incorrect — they should have included an apostrophe, as the 1906 Giants did.)
• Here’s one where the template gives almost no hint of just how majestic the real uniform was: Judging by this, you’d say that the 1938 Boston Bees (forerunners of today’s Atlanta Braves, don’tcha know) looked okay but hardly spectacular. But check out the lettering in this photo — beeYOOteeful! (As an aside, any idea who’s shown in that photo? I’ll provide the answer at the end of this entry.)
• I’m totally digging the superscript “T” used by the old St. Louis Browns.
• Even better: the caps worn by the 1910 Philadelphia Athletics. The stripes, the short brim, the just-so angle and profile — I’d wear that baby today.
• The book features several great Pirates jersey styles, including the lettered placket (1912), the “P P” collar (1914), and, in the background, the chest pocket (1911).
• Speaking of lettered plackets, check out the 1913 Brooklyn Superbas (another of the franchise’s pre-Dodgers names), whose team name lives on in Uni Watch design director Scott M. X. Turner‘s graphic design business, Superba Graphics.
• Brooklyn’s team was finally being called the Dodgers by the time of this 1925 photo. The black armband is in memory of team owner and stadium eponym Charles Ebbets, who had recently died. The chest patch, although difficult to decipher in this photo, reads “National League Golden Jubilee, 1876-1925,” and was worn by all NL teams that season — sometimes on the chest, sometimes on the sleeve.
• I’ve always loved the Cubs’ late-1930s road design, with the underlined insignia and the zipper front.
• Here’s eternal punchline Wally Pipp, doing the gum on the cap routine. And look — the Babe did it too!
• Pointy collar-o-rama on display here by the 1904 Giants.
• Would never have guessed in a jillion years that the Yankees ever wore a dugout jacket like the one modeled in this 1927 shot of Miller Huggins.
• Turns out that the sideways cap thing dates back at least to 1925. And in that same year, the Tigers’ mismatched cap and jersey logos were plain for all to see.
• The 1904 Cubs clearly had an insufficient hosiery budget.
As for that 1938 Boston Bees photo, the subject is none other than a young (well, 48-year-old) Casey Stengel, just cutting his managerial teeth.

While most players have their names and numbers pre-printed on the tops of their sticks to identify their personal curve pattern, Jeff’s sticks read ‘Donnie.’ ” Zolis adds that “What do NHLers write on their sticks?” might be a good Uni Watch research project, and I agree — feel free to send contributions this-a-way. ”¦ The NBA’s new ball, supposedly headed for the unemployment line, will be able to continue moonlighting in Japan (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). … With Lamar Hunt’s death last night, expect the Chiefs to sport some sort of memorial this weekend. The bigger question is whether the Chiefs will update their uniforms now that Hunt — a traditionalist — is no longer around to hold the line.

Sidney Crosby has “Darryl 87” embroidered on his gloves. I know that his junior teammates started calling him that after a 10-point game for Rimouski.
And it’s not just pros who get names on their sticks either. I’m pretty sure guys at BU have personalized sticks, probably based on BU’s equipment deals with Nike/Bauer (Unis) and Easton (sticks/gloves).
Paul, I have a game-used stick of Zdeno Chara’s, back when he played for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL. There are a number of names written on the shaft and blade, but I haven’t been able to confirm if they’re the names of his children or other family members.
At some point I will try to send you some pictures of it, maybe a “detective” out here in the interweb can shed some light onto them.

Somebody needs to get link from the 1904 Cubs something to eat.
As a bit of a sidenote: My vintage base ball team is currently in the process of creating a new team to play by the rules of 1886. We will be known as the Boston Beaneaters as a tribute to the 1886 version of the current Braves. I can only hope that our uniforms will look as good as link. I hope to be able to post pictures as soon as our uniforms come in.
As another sidenote: I am trying to recreate the Boston Beaneaters logo for our website, flyers, base ball cards, and other printed media but the only logo I can seem to find is found on the left breast of the home uniform from link. Anybody know of a different one? If that is the only one I was thinking of creating a new logo or emblem just to keep it a little more interesting, for myself at least. Anybody have any suggestions?
Also look for the MLS teams that are owned or were previously owned by Lamar Hunt to have something when their season starts.
That whole league owes a huge debt to that man and his persistance to get the sport off the ground(again).

that’s very true, Kim. I was beaten to the punch by Paul today. I’ve had this book (bought it at B&N for $5) for nearly 6 years. I was efforting a project of scanning and getting some words together for Paul on the book. Oh well, serves me right for trying to make it a surprise. This is an awesome book that sits on my coffee table, I highly recommend it to anyone that loves 1920’s baseball and to those that are curious, and if you’re on this site, chances are that’s YOU.

The best tribute to the late, great Lamar Hunt would be for the Chiefs to use link uniform combinations the rest of the season. (Hank Stram was the “designer” who instituted the red pants, worn during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning 1969/70 season.) And never forget, it was Lamar Hunt who suggested the “NFL-AFL Championship Game” be called “The Super Bowl”!

I can’t disagree more about Florida’s uni’s. The helmet, is terrible, the font is terrible, but rest of the uni is ok, with the exception of the different sleeves with the gator(?) print and the do rags made from them. Their throwbacks this year were cool, but the the one orange shoulder and one blue shoulder from a year ago (?) can not be forgotten. Go Buckeyes, even though I miss some of the gray in your uni’s, but I love those helmet stickers.

I will also disagree with Florida having the superior jerseys. The color scheme is great – blue & orange is a good combination and not used enough. Red & silver are overused, but where is it link than on Ohio State? The silver helmets with the stripe look great too.
The worst aspect of Florida’s unis are the helmets. link. Orange looks better as the accent color. And the logo and script ‘Gators’? Don’t like that either. However, if Florida wore their link, like earlier in the season, I would have to vote for them.

There is the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Which is a tournament that includes MLS, minor league, and amateur teams. Which a better tribute recognizing his contributions to all levels of soccer.

Being a Denver Broncos lifer, I’m a Chiefs hater. But one thing I have always admired about the Chiefs’ is their traditional uniform. When nearly every other team in the league moves toward a modern style of uniform with stripes going every which way and logos that get more and more detailed every year, Lamar Hunt has kept the Chiefs in a traditional looking uni that can stand the test of time. They look good every week. If they want to honor Lamar Hunt, they’ll keep the traditional unis. If there’s one thing the NFL can use, it’s a little more respect to its tradition.

I am 99% sure that the hat shown in this picture is that of the 1910 Philly Athletics. I actually purchased a replica of this hat at an A’s turn back the clock game in 2000.

I was up in Philly the other night and I was checking out the statue of link they have outside of the ballpark, and I was very impressed with the link the sculptor used. Kudos to him!

Growing up collecting hockey cards, I remember seeing something strange on a Kirk McLean card. He was making a kick save, and you were able to see the bottom of one of his skates, and it said “Weird”

God, I hate to do this as a Chiefs fan, but I agree with the Broncos fan. Chiefs fans revolted when the NFL mandated that we couldnt use “Rock and Roll Pt. 2” as our touchdown song due to Gary Glitter being arrested. So what happened? The Chiefs hires someone to record a new version, since it was a tradition. Anything out of the norm causes complete pandemonium in KC. A uniform change may bring on the apocalypse. It actually terrifies me.

If there’s one place where you don’t have to apologize for making geeky observations, this is it. Technically speaking, most dictionaries say that two people/things/etc. with the same name are both namesakes, regardless of which came first. But your point is well taken.
I have been looking at the Cooperstown Collection for replica caps from the early 1900s but they all seem to be period designs slapped onto current hat styles. I know that my brother or I used to have a Giants cap modelled on the 1913 cap that was more like a beanie with a short bill. Am I wrong about this?

actually, i didnt visually recognize evers, only the name… as the tinker to evers to chance DP combo. i would be able to pick out doerr, MAYBE cronin. i wanted to get a red sox #4 jersey a while back, so i did some research on cronin.

First not on Evers. He was one of the most famous second baseman to ever play baseball but was also overrated for what he was known for, his great double play combination Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. Evers averaged 40.78 errors per every 162 games for his career.

I couldn’t disagree more. The Chiefs’ design endures because of its simplicity and little details such as the sock striping. I hope the uniforms remain as is.

Yes, Banker Bill I remember the SEGA Genesis. It was the first gaming system that I had and that was the first game that I owned. You can get that game plus Madden NFL 95 with a plug and play link. I’ve been trying to find the photo on gaming sites but my work blocks game sites. Guess I’ll have to go get on the IT guy’s computer he gets anything as an administrator.

Around that time they wore home jerseys with laces up necks, wide collars, and BOSTON in red letters in the shape of an arc…nothing elaborate, just a basic uniform.

That was another bunked plan. The bean pot covered kept coming out looking like a teapot or an urn. I haven’t ruled that out though, but I think I’ll have to make the beans in the pot to make it actually look like what I am trying to represent.

Mr. Hunt gave over $7.5 million to the university and attended almost every SMU home football game in Ford Stadium (which he helped finance). The sports world has lost a true giant and a great man.

I always got hockey games no matter what system I had – all the way back to “Ice Hockey” by Activision for the Atari 2600 – My oldest stepson recently broke my PS2 so I’m out of the loop for NHL games, but NHL 95 was the best. I think most of my goals were one timers too – I was bretty good at breakaways though.

i love the idea of commemerating a world championship for the entire following season. maybe not to extent of the entire jersey, but atleast with a patch. i believe the last team to do so was the marlins in 2004 when they wore a world champions patch on their sleeve all season. the last two years, the red and white sox wore patches on their hats and jerseys (the red sox wore special gold outline around their letters and numbers) on opening day, but then dumped them after that. common, guys. a world series championship should be celebrated, or atleast acknowledged, for the reigning season.
The Gators have some of the classiest uniforms in college football especially considering they are a Nike school. Comparing them to Oregon’s and Miami’s, they’re awesome. The script helmet is one of the best in the nation. Yes those orange sleeves were horrendous and as a Gator fan, I apologize for them. And those undershirts are exactly that, undershirts. They can only be seen on some players and who cares if some players wear them on their heads, its not part of the uniform if its under the helmet.
Just googling “sega genesis emulators” should really get you to anything that you need. It takes some time to find a good site, it also takes time and searching to find the ROM’s (games) for the emulators.
On a kinda related note, does anyone remember the old nintendo game “Blades of Steel”. I am unsure who the teams you could play were, but one was green on the screen, and one was purple. It looks like you were playing the ninja turtles vs the foot clan in hockey!

Yes I have and yes they do.
It is a good idea to do some research on your own as they can produce thousands of different combinations and they can make historical errors. My first cap from them was a 1910 Cubs road cap. It came with the wrong pinstripe pattern, which was obvious to me. I emailed them a 1910 photo of Frank Chance, and the 2nd time around they got it right (at no extra charge of course)

1. the facemasks are gray and the shoes are black. not currently in use.
2. the whites are the worst idea since hiring greg robinson.
3. a yellow outline for the logo would not look good at all. i actually have a lapel pin with gold in place of the black. it disturbs me in my sleep. not a good idea to not have the black. see it here: link
One quick comment on the names, numbers on player’s hockey sticks. Sometimes the number is a personal player grading of the stick. A #1 might be the “best” stick in the bunch, a #3 might have more flex. [Peter Bondra used to do this when he was with the CAPS]

Got your goals confused – Larmer’s goal bounced in off of Babych. Kovalev was a breakaway deke – backhand to forehand roof job that knocked himself down and completely fooled McLean. I remember Lafayette hitting the post – I also remember Lafayette actually skating for the Rangers the following year.

It was 95 when they took the fighting out. They brought fighting back for 96. In Swingers, they complain about how they took fighting out of the game ‘because I think kids were hitting each other or something’, so they must be playing 95 (even though the menu screen is a little different than the 95 I have).
Actually it’s the ‘Pause’ screen that’s different, not the menu screen.
I would definitly recognize Joe Cronin. In either ’58 or ’59 he gave me a baseball at a old timers day at yankee stadium.
And when joltin joe dimaggio batted they kept pitching to him for almost 5 minutes till he hit a home run.
And Dave Sisler, Georges son, pitched very well for Boston that day. When he came out of the game he was applauded by most of the crowd.

1. the facemasks are gray and the shoes are black. not currently in use.
2. the whites are the worst idea since hiring greg robinson.
3. a yellow outline for the logo would not look good at all. i actually have a lapel pin with gold in place of the black. it disturbs me in my sleep. not a good idea to not have the black. see it here: link

A simple Google seach for “video game emulators” or something similar will definatley provide results. Usually it’s not the emulators for the consoles that are hard to find as much as the ROM files for the games. Technically, it’s illegal to distribute the ROM images, as their use is prohibited with out actually owning the game itself. Having said that, you can usually find what your looking for if you search long enough.

I’m 99% sure that they were playing NHLPA 93 in Swingers.
Let’s keep in mind this was a movie. The movie came out in 96 (filmed in 94-95?). I’m sure that since the no-fighting-in-the-game thing was a hot topic that it was written into the script, but that doesn’t mean that the affected version HAD to be the one they were actually playing. If my memory serves me right…it was the NHLPA 93 game that got the ball rolling to remove fighting from either the 94 or 95 version. But I’m almost positive it was 93 they were playing. I’m guessing that if you look at the pause screen…they refer to the teams only by the city. No logo or team names. It’s because they didn’t have the NHL license yet…just the players (hence nhlPA 93 vs. NHL 95)…

NHLPA 93 was called as such because EA Sports wasn’t the multi-million dollar wing of Electronic Arts it is today. They only had enough money to buy one license, and they chose the NHLPA license because no one had ever done that before.
NHLPA 93 also had fighting, but it was considerably toned down from the original NHL Hockey where it seemed that every hit resulted in a fight.
NHLPA also had blood in it. And Jeremy Roenick was one of the highest rated players in NHLPA 93.

That’s a good point about the licensing. In NHL 95, the home team’s logo can be seen in the middle of the center face off. In the game they play in Swingers, there’s nothing there. Other than that though and the different pause screen, the rest of the game looks almost exactly like 95 and the timing of filming works since NHL 95 came out in August of 1994. I guess it’s NHLPA 93 as a movie stand in for NHL 95?

Look, white on white might be fine for a lot of teams. Sometimes it saves us from some hideousness — *coughSeahawkscough* — but if you’re talking about the Kansas City Chiefs, there has GOT to be a significant amount of red in there. That’s just all there is to it.

Yes I have. About 8 years ago, I ordered the 1982-1986 home Chicago White Sox cap. Suffice to say, I was rather pissed. The white front panel wasn’t not white, but a light tan. The hat size was way too big, despite me measuring my head before I ordered, and the sweatband was paper thin & leather. Tho the most disappointing thing about it, was the logo itself. It’s completely wrong on the website, and that’s exactly how it came out on the hat, and to add insult to the process, it was extremely crooked & off-centered. I returned it and got my money back. And from the other real pictures I’ve seen, their modern caps are awful. I’d avoid them unless you need the really old stuff.

Just read the second Troy Soos’ book, Murder at Ebbetts Field. I liked it better than the first, and there are still the little baseball details that are so enjoyable to read, Mickey Rawlings, playing for the Giants in 1914, is so real, I looked him up to see if he actually existed. Read this series for more old-timey baseball lore. Great characterization of Casey Stengel, too.
Yes, the bj-league has to be the worst name ever for a professional sports league. People laugh all the time when I explain that there are 2 basketball leagues in Japan-the longtime JBL and the bj-league. Kobe Bryant’s dad, Joe Bryant, is the head coach of the Tokyo Apache of the bj-league, and former Utah Jazz forward David Benoit plays for the Saitama Broncos, so they’ve been “blowing” up the bj-league for the 2 years the league has been in existence.

Neither actually. Although, I would have loved to have both to help. Maybe Tiger Williams too. I racked up that amazing stat against Philadelphia with Chicago. It was a bet between me and a couple of friends to see who could do the most damage. I won, but not by much. One guy racked up 354 minutes in a Winnipeg-Detroit game. :o)

I’d like some uni-borne acknowledgement of championships like exists in soccer. In Italy, you wear the link (look on the green stripe, it’s there. Juventus are wearing the scudetto they won two years ago while celebrating the win last year. Ironically, both titles were stripped in the Calciopoli scandal, and Juve were relegated to Serie B. I think they’re not going for the pointed collars (see Juventus, Celtic away, Holland, etc. for that), but to rip off the template Nike was using link.

Yes I have. About 8 years ago, I ordered the 1982-1986 home Chicago White Sox cap. Suffice to say, I was rather pissed. The white front panel wasn’t not white, but a light tan. The hat size was way too big, despite me measuring my head before I ordered, and the sweatband was paper thin & leather. Tho the most disappointing thing about it, was the logo itself. It’s completely wrong on the website, and that’s exactly how it came out on the hat, and to add insult to the process, it was extremely crooked & off-centered. I returned it and got my money back. And from the other real pictures I’ve seen, their modern caps are awful. I’d avoid them unless you need the really old stuff.[/quote]
I’ll second that recommendation to only have them make the “old” styles- they are not New Era and don’t have the modern templates accurate, or the equipment to do so.

Actually I love the leather sweatband! out west here it’s dry and not an issue. too sticky in humidity?
As far as sizing- they can vary, BUT- they also offer FREE sizing corrections. I’ve sent mine back, sometimes twice- but in the end I have a ballcap that is truly unique, fits great and has historic style to it!

Incidentally: For those of you who complain about the security code, you wouldn’t believe how much spam we get hit with. It’s all the same stuff you probably get in your email account: cheap drugs, sex aids, ponzi schemes, etc. A ton of it. And if not for the security code, it’d all end up in the Comments section. I am friends with one of the football managers for TCU, and he told me that TCU will be getting a new design for next season (from Nike of course who currently makes their unis). They will be the same color scheme (your favorite purple) and will be the same template like Wake Forest’s unis. The main difference is they are switching to tackle-twill (sewn) as oppossed to their current iron-on. Earlier this week, Nike sent TCU some unis to try on for players to get sizes and such. The manager told me he will give me a pic once he receives them.

A great UniWatch investigation would be figuring out some of the symobology found on ice hockey goalie masks, as many goalies have wacky nicknames and many different characters, murals, etc. found on their cages.
