Nike to ‘Honor’ Seminole Tribe (Sort of Like Andrew Jackson ‘Honored’ the Cherokees)

CryingIndian.jpg

By now most of you know that Florida State will be wearing a special solid-black uniform against Boston College on October 21st. The new design, supposedly a tribute to the Seminole Indian tribe, will have “Unconquered” printed on one leg and “Seminoles” on the other (such a manifestly stupid design concept that it seems more like an insult than a tribute, but we’ll deal with that later).

What you may not know is that the game will also feature the opening volley in Nike’s latest mismatched-sleeve assault. I didn’t know this myself until yesterday, when a publicist (who either doesn’t know my feelings about Nike or else subscribes to the “no such thing as bad publicity” theory) sent me a communiquà© that included the following passage:

In addition, FSU players will don a new Nike underlayer beneath their uniforms that reflects the school’s relationship with the Seminole tribe, featuring a feather motif on the sleeve and twelve rows of gold feathers representing each of the school’s ACC titles. New Nike underlayers will also debut at Florida, Alabama, USC, and Texas during games later this fall.

The publicist sent along this photo. When I asked if the other sleeve would be red, like the left sleeve, she replied, “One sleeve is like in the photo, and the other sleeve just plain gold. The short-sleeved version is the same, just cuts off at the arrow.”

The Trail of Tears, Manifest Destiny, the Tomahawk Chop — haven’t we heaped enough indignities on Native Americans?

Ditch the Black Update: Big Ditch the Black news yesterday, as the following exchange took place between Mets radio broadcasters Howie Rose (an avowed anti-black partisan) and Tom McCarthy during Julio Lugo’s 7th-inning at-bat in last night’s Mets/Dodgers game:

Rose: Lugo was a big Mets fan growing up in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. He’s a free agent at the end of the year, and a guy the Mets may have interest in. … At the [pregrame] press conference, I asked Lugo why he was such a big Mets fan. And I swear to you I did not put him up to this — his answer was, and I quote, “I loved their blue hats.” End quote.

McCarthy: The real problem, though — and there were a lot of members of the media there, national and local — was when you stood up and started cheering. I don’t think that was appropriate.

Rose: Sometimes you gotta do whatcha gotta do to make a point.

Obviously, I am very much in the market for Howie Rose’s and Julio Lugo’s e-mail addresses.

(Ãœber-thanks to Bernie Langer for tipping me off to this one.)

Capital Idea: An interview with Washington Captials owner Ted Leonsis appeared on a Metroblogging DC yesterday, and part of the discussion involved the Caps’ uniforms. Here’s the relevant passage (with thanks to Dan Franko for the tip):

MBDC: What’s going on with the uniforms? It seems every year we have people scratching their heads wondering if you’ll be going back to red, white, and blue uniforms.

Leonsis: We will eventually go back to red, white, and blue. For every person who sends me an e-mail that wants the color change or new uniform, I get as many mails, mostly from mothers, saying, “Pease don’t change the uniform. because then I have to buy the new jersey for my children and they are very expensive.” I am very cognizant of that and when we’re changing the uniform I don’t want it to look like we are doing it to generate money. To be honest, that is not even how it works — we’re not the recipient of individual, additional jersey sales. That is a misconception. The NHL overall is looking at changing the style, the weight, and making the uniforms more contemporary. So I think we’ll just wait and see when the NHL goes to a new design and style and new color scheme and logos, and that would be the time to do it.

MBDC: I imagine there will be a lot of effort put into that when the time comes, so there is not a repeat of the Buffaslug disaster.

Leonsis [laughing]: Yes, we will make sure we have total fan buy-in before do anything.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Nice little blurb here about how Mitchell and Ness outfitted the players for this week’s Sports Illustrated cover (with thanks to Nicole DiCiccio). … Underbill Update: Aaron Reynolds notes that Joel Zumeya has something written along the far edge of his brim. … And what’s going on under Billy Wagner’s brim? (Thanks to Mike from Queens for the screen shot.) … Andrew Lupton stumbled upon some photos of great old-school football unis — look here and here. … Odd scene when Julio Franco came up to bat last night, as Fox put up a graphic with a Padres logo. … Interesting observation by Sean Tuffy, who notes that the Atlanta Thrashers logo bears more than a slight resemblance to the USA Rugby logo. … Craig Monroe was switching back and forth between two different pairs of sunglasses during the 9th inning of yesterday’s Yanks/Tigers game. … One more NBA team with European-themed preseason unis: the Sixers, with stripes adapted from the Spanish and Catalonian flags. … Good view here of the Coyotes’ 10th-anniversary patch, which made its first uni-borne appearance last night.

So how do I go the entire weekend without stumbling across vomit-inducing highlights of the FSU game? This could be a challenge.

Can I send Nike a bill to clean the vomit out of my keyboard? That undershirt is atrocious.

I noticed Derek Lowe wearing a different hat last night. The white outline instead of the solid white LA.
    link

Am I the only person who doesn’t care about assymmetry? I think symetry is kind of boring and those undershirts are ace. Why not put a design on it rather than just pitch black?
I noticed Derek Lowe wearing a different hat last night. The white outline instead of the solid white LA.

    That’s Eric Gagne.

Does it look to anyone else like the guys in the second old-time football picture are sporting capes? especially the guy on the far left rocking the Superman pose.
Are the FSU unis black or green?
They’re black. Apparently they show up on some monitors (including mine) as green, but I’ve been assured that they’re supposed to be black.

I’m pretty sure that’s Eric Gagne in that photo, not Derek Lowe. Even if it’s not Gagne, it’s definitely not Lowe, anyway…

    Still, strange hat.

The interesting part about Monroe trying two pairs of sunglasses is that one was a pair of the “flip” variety and one was a regular pair of sunglasses. The announcers a few innings before had a discussion about Johnny Damon and his flip sunglasses, saying that they liked them for some reason. Then suddenly we get this shot of Monroe with a pair of flips on his face and a pair of regulars upside-down on his hat. He closes the flips, looks up, takes them off, puts the regulars on, looks into right field (presumably at his teammate) and shakes his head while putting the flips into his back pocket. I guess his teammate suggested that he try the flips, and he didn’t like them.

I think I remember reading that what’s left of the Seminole tribe in Florida supports the school’s use of the name and the related stuff.

I can’t imagine they’d support something that looks as ridiculous as that does, though.

    Random points:
    1) That Seminoles stuff is atrocious. I know no other word to describe it. It is atrocious and should be burned. All of it. The “black” (green on my screen too) uni, the Underoos, all of it. Atrocious.

    2) Don’t care about basketball, but the Sixers looked pretty bad with the red and yellow at the top of the black jersey, LOSING to a Spanish club team.
    3) I was five when the Cooperalls were tried by my Flyers and the Whale. How did they get banished to the scrap-heap of awful ideas, and can we pre-emptively do the same thing to keep the NHL from “looking at changing the style, the weight, and making the uniforms more contemporary”? They must be stopped. Hockey sweaters should look just like they do and they should not be changed so some Johnny-Come-Lately can make a ton of money.

Right, someone made the comment (last night)that Gagne was wearing the Dodgers’ BP hat.

Not sure if this has ever been commemented on here, but the more I watch the Dodgers, something about the jerseys kept bothering me. The numbers on the front of the jersey do not match the back of the jersey. The Dodgers have no red in the logo, what is the significance of the red numbering on the front of the jersey. Can anyone else think of a jersey that has two seperate colours for numbers on the same jersey?

Poor poor Nike! Putting all this marketin muscle into an incredibly mediocre FSU football program. They won’t even be in the top 40 by the time they play BC.

Let’s hope the Caps decision to go back to the red, white and blue will force the Wiz, i.e. Les’ Bullets, to do the same!

If Nike wanted a shirt that reflected the relationship between FSU and the Seminole tribe, wouldn’t something with ‘$’ be more appropriate?

    And likely less-unappealing?

    Definitely the link

Forgive me, maybe I don’t watch as much NL ball as I should but when I was looking for that link I came across link. It’s listed as an Alternate but I have never seen one in a game and certainly hope NEVER to see one in a game.

Watch the 76ers-F.C.Barcalona game on NBA TV last night. I seriously detest the new NBA official’s jerseys. With Adidas as the official NBA outfitter, they are really trying to put their
stamp all NBA clothing, game uniforms not with- standing.

The dodgers have been wearing Red going back to the link in 1952. They have red in the link

Maybe The hat Gagne was wearing would be a good alternative for the Mets if they drop the Black with an orange and white outline like they link on the black hat…

I know this is nit-picky, but that’s why we come here, right? Last night Aaron Heliman pitched the 8th for the Mets with the plastic tag thingy (the one with ‘T’s on both ends, still attached to the left side of his hat. Sorry, no screen grab, I’m not hi-tech like that.

adidas is definitely putting their three-stripe stamp on all things not in-game uniform related. From the link to the warmup link and link – even the link.

I do like how they’re putting the throwback logo on the link, though.

A new compatriot in the Ditch The Black campaign, albeit unwittingly: Mike North of Chicago’s WSCR 670AM “The Score.” On this morning’s show he went on a good 90 second rant about the Mets. This isn’t verbatim, but it was something along the lines of: “Clendenon and Carter and those guys, they never wore the black – the Mets are blue and orange! Where’d this black crap come from? I turn on the game last night, and I recognize the Dodgers, but who’s this minor league team they’re playing?”

    Needless to say, I smiled.
Can anyone else think of a jersey that has two seperate colours for numbers on the same jersey?
Paul has mentioned the Astros, and I’m sure there are a few more.

One I can think of off the top of my head is in 1990 when the Cubs traded their blue tops for bland gray on the road. They had red numbers with blue and white borders on the front, and basic blue-with-white-border numbers on the back. This only lasted one year; then they started putting the three-layer numbers on both front and back.

You can’t see the backs here, but this is the link.

In 1997 they ditched the niddle layer and went with plain red/white numbers for both front and back, and they still wear those now. Come to think of it, ten seasons is a long tenure for such a forgettable uniform.

    Paul,

Thanks so much for hitting the nail on the head about the Native Americans. The more I learn about what “Americans” did to them for no good reason other than we could is embarrassing and maddening. Thanks for mentioning it in such a public forum. Not that it could ever be fixed or repayed, at least we can know that we were wrong in what we did and that we can do what we can to not let it happen again in any context.

(I say “we” as in decendants of European-Americans, including those that landed on the east coast and moved west and the Spanish who planted missions up the Mexican/Californian coast)

I’ll hop down off my soapbox now…

Traditionalists hated inter-league play. But it is good. Traditionalists hate the wild card. But it is good. There is one league with a DH. Traditionalists are still complaining about this.
Things change. It is a refusal to evolve that has made the great game of baseball no longer number one in the hearts and minds of this country.
The arguement that the Mets can’t evolve their look means that the Angels should still be wearing dark blue hats (they admittedly changed for purely marketing reasons.) And the Astros should still have orange hats. And the Padres MUST GO BACK TO BROWN AND MUSTARD which was worn by their great Hall of Famer, Dave Winfield!!! Where is the campaign to avenge this wrong?
I was watching the game on a brilliant HD screen last night and I was glad there weren’t two teams with the same blue caps. The Mets looked bad-ass and the Dodgers in their “classic” unis (which I like FOR THEM) looked like wimps. Because we were busy going up 2-0!!!!!

I’m a little confused as to what Mitchell & Ness had to do with that SI cover. Did they shoot photos of models wearing M&N jerseys, then photoshop in the heads of the athletes?

Martin Rucinsky of the Blues was wearing #62 last night after wearing #22 in his previous stint with the Blues and all preseason. Nothing was said about the change during the game. Anyone?

Rucinsky’s “preferred” number is #26. Like many Czechs in the NHL, it’s worn to honor Hall-Of-Famer Peter Stasny, who had to defect from the former Czechoslovakia when the Iron Curtain still existed. Fellow Czech Petr Cajanek already wears #26 for the Blues, so Rucinsky decided to reverse the numerals and wear #62.

I don’t think the argument is that the Mets are evolving their look.

I would think that just announcing “The Mets are now a Black, Blue, and Orange team, and our uniforms and merchandise will now reflect this” would quell some of this uprising.

What irks people is that they’ve moved a trim color to a primary color on the sly. Their ALTERNATE jersey & hats are black, yet they seem to wear them all the time. It seems to be a treat to see them wear their traditional unis.

I don’t want to confuse the issue between wearing Alternates too much and using non-team colors.

But I don’t like the wearing of Alts more than occasionally. Many teams abuse this, or play MLB Garranimals by mixing and matching their uni-parts. I think the 1998 Diamondbacks came real close to wearing a unique uniform for all 162 games.

Are you kidding?! The swoosh on Nike shoes is not something new or “strategic.” It’s not like it hasn’t been there before (ie football jerseys, wristbands, socks, gloves), it’s been happeniing since ’72. I think some of the logo creep paranoia on here is very unfounded and ridiculous. I agree that wearing the swoosh just for the sake of wearing the swoosh (three stripes, UA or whatever) is regrettable, but the company’s logo is usually a key design element when it comes to shoes and should not be considered logo creep.

And yes, those are the Cortez.

In fact the Astros didn’t wear their road grays from late June until the last day of the season, when they finally pulled them out of mothballs. The reasons for the Astros wearing their red Sunday ‘Houston’ Alternates for every road game from late June until October is that this is the only Cool Base Jersey that the Astros have, their others being the traditional double knit. I wish they would wear the road grays more and there’s a possibility that these might made into Cool Base jerseys next year in addition to the red Sunday away alternates. I’m an Astros fan and I even got sick of seeing that shade of red all season.

Does Riley have a deal with Nike? Usually coaches (in all sports) are too cheap to buy their own shoes for practice and they wear what’s provided for them, which in the NBA’s case would be adidas, I would think.

Nike has a history of cheap Photoshop work in advertisements and promotions:

-I worked at Niketown in Orange County (when it still existed) and while I was there, the link‘s (Vince Carter’s 3rd signature shoe) came out. We had a poster up in our basketball section showing Vince dunking in his new shoes. The problem with it was that the shoes were simply edited in over the shoes he was wearing. What made it obvious was that they were both right shoes, so he had the outside of his right shoe showing on the inside of his left foot. Freakin’ annoying.

-The same thing happened with the release of the link (on the right) as opposed to Landon Donovan’s and Eddie Johnson’s? That’s right, he’s flipped so his uniform is backwards (left sleeve detail on the right, backwards 17, backwards swoosh on his sock among many others). So I took the liberty to link. In my mind, if a tinkering Photoshop amateur like myself can correct the photo then certainly a multi-billion dollar corporation can too.

Don’t like the words on pants trend started by Oregon and continued by FSU – whether the words be the school name, team name or a slogan like “unconquered”. How long before ‘zona gets “Bear Down” on theirs?

I don’t think the Penguins are moving out of Pittsburgh. As for whether or not it’s gold or yellow, Webster’s defines gold as “a variable color averaging a deep yellow”. I would take that to mean that the Fluery’s pads and the jersey’s are both gold.

I obviously can’t speak for the Seminole, but I would find it pretty damn offensive if the Chinese in Taiwan ‘honored’ the Taiwanese people by wearing an ‘unconquered’ shirt or pants. I am all for irony, but this bypasses that. I agree with whomever said it was about the dollars.

Plus, the uniform is just ugly, as is the undershirt. You want to honor the Seminole? Then give them all the money made from the profit of the tribute uniforms. Better yet, ditch the tribute and encourage FSU people to donate directly to the tribe. Better yet, encourage the FSU people to learn something about the tribe.

Oh, and the argument about tradition vs. modern is just a lame one. Neither is all good or all bad. One can wish for some things to stay the same without being a stick-in-the mud whereas someone else can like some aspects of the new without being a sellout.

Stepping down off my soapbox now.

The color the Steelers and the Pirates wear is obviously yellow. It’s nobody’s fault, it just is what it is. What I don’t understand is the compulsion to call it something else (ie gold) when it’s not, even if you can make a technical argument that it is some other color as well. There is nothing wrong with yellow. The Steelers have cool uniforms, and the Pirates have, as Paul stated, some of the most underrated uniforms in the Major Leagues, yet tell somebody in Pittsburgh that the Steelers where yellow and you are liable to get killed. I don’t get it.

Michigan fans have the exact same hang up. I am not just picking on Pittsburgh.

The guy that just bought the Penguins is from Canada; no way does Pittsburgh get an arena built in time. That team is going, it’s only a matter of time, although I hope I’m wrong.

Oh man, you can personalize those new undershirts over at link. Click on “apparel”, then “football”.
Doofy phrases, bad tattoo designs, state images, all sorts of crap. No Seminole spear head though; that must just be part of the “tribute”.

see also the University of California, WVU and old school Pitt before they actually changed their colors to Blue and Gold.

If you look at the enire photo of the SI baseball players, somethings I observed. Mike Schmidt is wearing a double ear flap helemt and he does not have a logo on the front of it. There are many pictures of unreal leggings and stirups. Gotta miss those days.
I am trying to find another picture of the entire SI photo.

The Capitals owner is lying, I saw Hershey Bears players shooting promos with the new Capitals uniforms. The problem was they didnt get their change into the league in time. Mark it down.

    From nhluniforms.com:

For the 2000-01 season, the Washington Capitals were set to take the ice in new uniforms. The jerseys were even reportedly being sold in some catalogs. However, apparently at the last minute, the Capitals scratched those plans and kept their uniforms from the previous season, albeit using their black alternates as their regular away jerseys. Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has said he wants to change the team’s look, so stay tuned.

Notice what looks like blood stains on Lefty Grove’s socks. Kinda makes Curt Schilling look less heroic with all the red on both of Grove’s socks.

Those are the ones rumored to be designed by Tommy Hilfinger. They were awful. The logo was probably the worst part of it.

Whoa….did I take a wrong turn at Albuquerque? When did I wander out oflink and into a link

Where did all of link come from?

Anyhow, for all the Mets fans out there….it’s official. The infestation of black is link.

And Ek, we had that Jeter vs. A-Rod discussion the other day….0-4 with 3 K’s? That’s what $252 Mil buys these days? (Yes, I know the Rangers still pick up part of the tab) His only saving grace is that Verlander killed EVERYONE yesterday.

And that is Gagne. They were talking about him on the picture box when they showed that pic.

By the way, I’m all about the link the Padres are sporting for the next 1 game.

“Anyhow, for all the Mets fans out there….it’s official. The infestation of black is complete.”

What do you mean by that? Mr. Met has been wearing black since the unis were introduced.

In hindsight, that changed distanced the team from the city, and made it easier to move from a “branding” (for lack of a better word) prospective. I live in Alaska. If it’s not on the networks or the Mariners I have to see it on Sportscenter. Pardon me if I don’t keep up with Mr. Met’s fashion. Apologies.

The Dodgers wore these hats during Think Blue Week 1999 along with, what i consider very sharp looking, blue jersey’s. After Think Blue Week, the Dodgers auctioned the jersey’s off and they have never been worn again. The hats have also never been worn in a game again.

Although, these hats have nothing on white cap with blue brim batting practice hats the Dodgers wore the first year batting practice hats were introduced. The team was doing so poorly that in a trying to change their luck they took all of them and set them on fire in the bullpen before the game. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.
And the Padres MUST GO BACK TO BROWN AND MUSTARD which was worn by their great Hall of Famer, Dave Winfield!!!
Watching the Padres games, their fans are a ridiculous mix of jersey and cap colors (not their fault). I saw brown and yellow, brown and orange, blue and orange, blue and white, and blue and sand. No consistency at all. Compare that to the sea of red the Cardinals fans will have when the series moves to Busch, and I think you’ll see a strong argument for keeping the colors you choose. Fashion always comes back around.

Minna, I dunno how Radke’s going to keep the A’s at 3 or less with his hurt arm. I hope it’s a close game, but I think it’ll be a little higher than 5-3. With these two starters, we could be looking at an 8-7 game…

personally, I don’t care who wins as long as in the end, the Yankees and Mets lose.

the A’s audio just commented on the fact that both teams are wearing their regular home and away uniforms, and how today “we have a REAL baseball game.”

Looks like yet another major sports outfitter (Adidas) has taken up the idea of mismatched sleeves being cool. Germany’s away football uniforms are red with a black right sleeve. This wasn’t obvious during the cup b/c they never wore their away jerseys (see pics here: link). I just noticed them watching the U-21 Germany-England match.

Jeez… Ek leaves the blog for a little while and the whole thing goes to pot !!!! I blame Minna for starting this bold business!

“also, Johnny Bench is putting the shinguards on the wrong legs…..the straps should be on the inside.” – bob #79

Bob, don’t know if you were ever a catcher, but you want to buckle shin pads on the outside of the leg. This prevents the possibility of the hooks catching on each other on the inner leg and tripping you up.

Sigh. The yellow/gold argument. Yes, the color on the Pittsburgh flag, on which the uniform colors of the Steelers, the Pirates, and (for a while) the Penguins were based is a shade of yellow.

It’s also gold. Yellow is very commonly used to represent the mineral gold, as it has been since link.

It also happens that in more recent times (perhaps because of the ability to give helmets and uniforms a metallic sheen), various colors of beige and light brown have also been used to represent the mineral gold.

The result is that the name “gold” can refer to very different shades. But that doesn’t make it wrong to use the term. “Gold” is a name for a color, just like the Cowboys’ and Eagles’ “silver” (which is actually gray).

A lot of teams like to give “colorful” names to their colors– scarlet, cardinal, maize, pewter, cream, crimson, powder blue. You don’t use these terms to specify the Pantone values in the uniform; they are just names, much like the nickname for a team.

You are right that most teams don’t seem to like to say they wear “yellow”– I’m sure that’s because that word has some negative connotations (cowardice); “gold” sounds much cooler, anyway. I’m curious– are there any teams that proudly say they wear yellow?

But I have to disagree that there’s anything wrong with calling yellow “gold,” as the tradition for doing so is pretty well-established. (In Pittsburgh’s case, you can’t even blame any of the teams themselves, since they are merely following the example of the people who designed the city’s flag in about 1900.)

Now link is a great idea. However, the NHL already has link for this team (see the foreign flag on that shoulder).

My apologies for the “bold” incident(s).

My thoughts on the Mets wearing black have been documented on here before, where I have no problem with it, but they do need to corral the usage a little bit more, like black alternate jerseys on weekends or Sundays, and black-and-blue hats on the road, with the blue ones at home…it’s a fair compromise.

Also, I love it when teams use era-appropriate logos and/or colors for championship banners or number retirements. I mean how ridiculous would it have looked if say, the Islanders, when they wore those Fish-stick things in the mid-90’s, had changed the retired number banners of guys like Potvin and Bossy, to match the wavy-design of that jersey? Or if the Fisherman logo adorned the middle of the Stanley Cup banners? To me, banners are an important in-house representation of a franchise’s history, so that should be reflected.

Hopefully this doesn’t appear in bold, if it does, I apologize in advance.

as a Browns and Buckeye fan, I revel in calling the Steelers and Wolverines color yellow! In fact, our radio broadcaster for the Browns often calls the Steelers colors black and yellow!

….all of which Alabama has never had any part of. I don’t see the point of your complaining as the only significant change to Alabama’s uniform in the last million-and-a-half years (that brief white-helmets-for-recievers in the 60s period aside) has been the addition of that minisule, gimmicked-up link on the collar the school ‘adopted’ not long ago. Nike has pretty much left the uniform untouched. Aiming the heat towards Nike, in this case, is grossly unfair because there were just as many, if not more, little Rs on the uniform when the team was being outfitted by Russell.

Few quick notes. Eric Chavez has something written under the bill of his cap, couldnt really tell what it said, but if you can get a screen grab of it you should be able to tell. It was ledgible, but he was swaying too much. Also, i’ve actually seen the messed up graphic many times before, but its usually at least one of the teams playing in the game. Anyone see where I’m going with this?

    Just kidding. No worries.

And nastykjn, he’s batting 4th tonight. I’ll be the one throwing my shoes at the television.
That Indian in the photo isn’t even Indian- he’s Italian.
I’ll be damned. I knew that was Iron Eyes Cody, the famous “crying Indian” in that one commercial, and I was all set to quote from IMDB.com to prove you wrong, but you’re not. He really was Italian; he just passed himself off as Native American. Wow. I learned something today.

Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some serious littering to do.

exactly my point. the uni continues to change. little by little, bit by bit. i just metioned the facemask as one thing. i know nike had nothing to do with it. however, i think michigan had untouched unis until someone put yellow piping on the away uni. i dont want crimson piping on the whites. what next, a little bib, maybe a little smaller than miami, then a little bigger, then patches on the sides of the uni, then piping around the patches. great now were the vikings. you get my point. i am familiar with the uniforms of the past for alabama and the pathetic A on the collar now. my point was that nike doesnt care about the University of Alabama. I think Russell did, at least at one point. maily because russell was part of the state. neway, roll tide. nike sucks, and go uni watch

First time, long time (relatively speaking),

    Hate Nike
Hate bad text application – vertically stacked letters. Our alphabet was NEVER meant to be done this way. (See Atlanta hockey sleeves).

Okay Ek, I ripped up the couch but I am NOT gonna cop to the dump on the floor. Here’s hoping your boy, (yeah, I pulled a Wilbon on you), gets the go-ahead RBI in the top of the 9th to shake the rep as a non-producer in big situations and then Inge gets the game winner in the bottom half.

And about the shoes….I ripped those up before the couch.

Anyone else notice during tonight’s Yanks/Tigers game that Kenny Rogers of the Tigers is either wearing his batting practice cap OR the rumored new MLB cap? It definitely doesn’t look like wool. I can’t provide a screen cap of this – sorry.

Yes, this is old news. He has been wearing that cap all season. He has a road version as well.

Ekkie’s back! Wahoo! I wasn’t the bad puppy, Ek, even though a arauz blamed me and the Twins stunk up the joint. Guess I’ll have to root for the, uh, someone help me out here. The MN teams are floundering all around. For whom shall I root? Who has the best unis left in the MLB playoffs? I’m rooting for them.

ps. Congrats, Oakland fans—your team was definitely the better one.

Wow, amazed at all the negativity about the Pens leaving. I hope none of you are actually from Pittsburgh who are saying that. Won’t happen – they’ll be here.

Very interesting stuff about the yellow/gold thing. Looks like someone copied and pasted something they found on the net, but interesting nonetheless.

And old-school pitt was navy and yellow before changing to royal and gold (check the ’76 team) before changing to royal and yellow before changing to navy and gold. My wife owrks for Pitt’s football team. They had a reunion for the ’76 National Championship team during the first game of the season. The unis were blue and gold, not blue and yellow. they changed to yellow shortly afterwards.

Look at the difference between link and link

Good thing about the A’s win today—they are closer to the Series. Bad? you should SEE the traffic jam on “880” aka the Nimitz.

    PS
The Yankees-Tigers series on now is timeless, isnt it? Same uni’s now for both as in the 60s, masically. Or 50s.

Well, no, I think you missed the point and then totally changed the subject. You’re basically arguing about nothing because those ‘uniforms of the past’ are still the uniforms of today. They haven’t changed a lick in link, link, link, link years and a half inch collar patch that you can link from five feet away isn’t gong to send shockwaves through anything so hard enough to excite the type of change you’re speaking of. Every school has bearings and a grasp on it’s own traditions and just because one team makes a change mean everyone else is going to willing follow in line with their fingers over their mouths. Geez, just have– I don’t know, faith…? What else can you say?

Just think about this: don’t think that Nike executives held the Alabama AD at gunpoint and threatened to blow up every Bear Bryant statue in Tuscaloosa if they didn’t part with Russell. Alabama obviously wanted Nike’s support, if just for the name alone. I could be wrong, but Nike, Russell, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, all the way down to JoBar’s Discount Sandcastle Equipment over on East Boon Ave all really like to make money more than anything else, and they really don’t care who is helping them get it.

Ok, I’ll will throw a bone though, they have had sleeve numbers on occation. My over-sight. But that’s a lot like link was down the road a few miles. It didn’t last either.

Did anyone see the Oakland A’s coach who was wearing yellow socks and green stirrups during todays game??? I don’t have a picture but there was a pretty good shot of his lower half during a camera switch to the dugout (before the 9th inning, i think). did anyone else see this? or know which coach it might be?

    Minna,
Who you root for seems to be a process of elimination. you can’t root for the Yankees, because that goes against all the small markets like Minnesota. So they are out. You can’t root for the team that eliminates you (or at least it hurts to), so Oakland is out. You can’t root for the Padres because of link, so they are out. With the Mets electing to wear the black every game, they are out. So that leaves you with the Tigers, Cardinals and the Dodgers. All of which are great uniforms. It’s your choice…

Jon, you make some great points. Can’t root for the Yanks (sorry, Ek, see, I un-bolded my bold) or Oakland. I like black, but we’re going with aesthetic purity here. Ok. Gotta go with the Tigers because the AL Central needs to represent–and, I like tigers. Thanks for your help, Jon.

I’m not sure if you were talking about my post, Chris, but I actually did write that myself. I guess I’ve seen the question come up so many times that it probably sounds rehearsed now. : )

Here’s something interesting that I did find on the Internet, though:

    link

I think it’s interesting– it looks like the University of Pittsburgh based its colors on the seal (blue and gold), and the pro teams based theirs on the flag (black and gold). From what I can tell, it worked like this:

1925: The NHL Pittsburgh Pirates wear uniforms based on the city flag, with black and gold as their colors.

1933: The NFL Pittsburgh Pirates (eventually renamed the Steelers) use black and gold as their colors. The first season, the uniforms are based on the flag.

1948: The baseball Pittsburgh Pirates (popular name) switch from red and blue to black and gold.

1980: The Pittsburgh Penguins complete their gradual transition from blue uniforms to black and gold ones (after some legal wrangling with the Boston Bruins).

    There’s a Post-Gazette article about the colors that I’m trying to find…

Yes, I know exactly what you mean… and I blame Minna because this thing started acting up when she checked in. Of course, she now has greater issues in mind… like where Morneau and Mauer will be golfing this week…

Maybe the M&M boys should make tee time reservations for Jetter and A-job, uh?

Welcome back, and you’re clearly not allowed to leave again. Sorry this is sooooo long, it’s that Kenny Rogers has pumped me UP!

If the Penguins move it won’t be to Ontario and the yellow pads are a hold over from Fleury’s days in Cape Breton.

Not sure if this was posted already, didn’t have time to go through all the posts.

Anyone notice Kenny Rogers’ hat tonight? It had a black underbill and looked more like the batting practice hat rather than the game hat. Either that or a non-New Era fitted hat bought at the local Sports Authority or something.

It certainly worked for him, though. Both Yankee and Met fans are looking at tonight’s game and wondering why he didn’t do it for their teams.

Ek, don’t listen to them! It’s not my fault. I know how to bold! What’s more. I know how to unbold!

Al, what I’m pondering is how the Vikes are going to f*** it up against the Lions this Sunday and which hideous unis they’ll be wearing as they self-destruct—that’s what’s weighing on my mind.

Al is right about one thing—you’re not allowed out of your cage, Ek. We clearly can’t function without you.

Well the land for the arena has already been bought, and the Penguins are legally tied to the Isle of Capri deal plus there is plan B so the chances of them leaving are getting slimmer by the day

I loved reading this artical and seeing that armPITT is happy to have “industries of the city bringing in golden streams” for my personal feelings to that town, that is awesome. but hey, look at link uni’s here, i got to play against that guy my Sr. year of high school, so i guess i have a small soft spot

Sports Illustrated, in their latest issue, showed a magnificent photo collage of an All Time Major League baseball team and in the collage, Mike Schmidt’s batting helmet doesn’t have a Phillies logo on it. Was this a trademark of his? Just wondered why his helmet would be blank.

Does anyone else think the reason FSU is wearing all black uni’s is because they don’t want the game vs. BC to look like a Seminole scrimmage. The two teams’ colors are very similar, wearing all black is a way to realy seperate the teams.

If you can find a picture from last year’s game, you’ll see what I mean.

And you live in Manhattan (or is it Broolyn) which the native Americans sold for $24. Me thinkst the pot is calling the swoosh black here. Don’t over-ingraciate yourself on you political correctness by black balling Nike. Sure the uni sucks OK. Got it.

Just to chime in on the Mets black/blue debate, the ’90’s were a time where everything in sports fashion, no matter how time-honored, was challenged. A few posts back, you saw somone comment about the Isles’ fishsticks jerseys, which are an excellent example. So to say just because they’ve been wearing them since ’98 they should stay with them, I don’t feel is valid reason. As a Mets fan, I’m not so much riled up by the black jerseys at home or on the road if they were used occasionally, but what really irkes me is the black shadowing on the grey roads, pinstripes and snow whites and black hats with the blue brim. It just takes a classic look and puts a dumb spin on it that’s not needed. Part of the allure of a franchine is that when you see today’s stars in the same uniforms as the legends of your team’s past, it creates a great feeling of connection. Well, Reyes and Wright don’t even wear the same unis that Seaver got to wear because of that ridiculous shadowing. It’s very cheap.

Oh, and one other blue point that drives me NUTS. I don’t know if anyone has ever touched on this, but does anyone else realize that when the Cubbies wear their blue alternates that their blue hats aren’t the same shade of blue? And a few years back, when they changed their BP jerseys and caps to navy from royal, it creates a horrible look if a player wears a game hat with a BP jersey, which happens a lot during the season. It irkes me. Just sayin’

Brian, the BP jersey is the one that’s too dark and doesn’t match up well; the alternate game jersey looks fine. I wonder if it has something to do with that new fabric that many practice jerseys now have.

Aren’t the BP hats in the same darker shade as the BP jerseys?

I just hope they don’t put names on the BP jerseys next season like they’re planning to do with the home and alternate shirts. Leave us number-only buffs with something!
