First and foremost: Yes, I am aware that today’s post looks a little different. Not sure why, but we’re working on it and hope to have it fixed soon.
New ESPN column today — here’s the link. (They’ve been having some technical problems on the ESPN site too, so if the link doesn’t work, try a different browser.)
Meanwhile: Bit of a punctuation slip-up yesterday in Houston, where the name on the back of Cubs pitcher Ryan O’Malley’s jersey was missing the apostrophe (a gaffe that looked even worse when it appeared side-by-side with a properly punctuated TV graphic). The slip-up was likely the result of a rush job: The Cubs played 18 innings the night before and had to use Rich Hill, who’d been scheduled to start on Thursday, so O’Malley was an emergency call-up. Toss in the fact that the team was playing an afternoon game on the road and it’s not surprising that the apostrophe got lost in the shuffle.
Punctuation and diacriticals always pose tricky problems for equipment managers. We take it for granted nowadays that players like Magglio Ordoà ±ez and Abraham Nuà ±ez will have the tilde over the n on their uniforms, but the use of tildes was largely unheard of during the first decade or two of player names appearing on jerseys. The first player I can recall wearing one was Willie Montaà ±ez in the late ’70s, and he’d already been in the bigs for over a decade by that point.
Some other players aren’t so lucky. The proper styling of Carlos Beltrà ¡n’s name, for example, is to include the accent over the a. Some media outlets print his name that way, but not his employer. This same problem afflicts the nameplates of many other Latino players.
Then there’s the question of what to do with names that include Mc, Le, and the like. Take, for example, Mark McGwire: When he broke in with the A’s, his name was styled with a small superscript c. But when he moved to the Cardinals, his name was rendered as all uppercase, with a space between Mc and Gwire (sometimes a really big space, sometimes not big at all). Then-teammate Joe McEwing got the same treatment, then saw his name styled with a superscript c during his stints with the Mets and Royals.
A similar evolution has taken place with Paul LoDuca’s name. When he was with the Dodgers, it was rendered in uppercase letters, with a space (sometimes big, sometimes small). But with the Marlins he wore a lowercase o, which is what also appears on his back with these days with the Mets (who sometimes appear to add a tiny space for good measure).
To my knowledge, there’s never been a ballplayer whose name included an umlaut, circumflex, cedilla, or ring accent. Can’t wait to see who gets to be the first equipment manager to contend with those.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday’s post about colored gloves prompted a good response from Jordan Sidwell, who writes: “I noticed in the Bobby Abreu photo that his glove had the silver Rawlings Gold Glove patch, which is given to Gold Glove winners who are Rawlings endorsers. Others who I’ve noticed wearing it are Cesar Izturis, Torii Hunter, and Alex Rodriguez (whose glove also has custom pocket stamping).” … Carlos Zambrano was recently spiked in the heel while covering first base but, according to this article (forwarded by Elena Elms), was saved from serious injury by the Venezuelan flag on the back of his shoe: “‘He was lucky,’ [Dusty] Baker said. ‘That Venezuelan flag saved him. That’s what he stepped on. It got all shoe, didn’t cut him. It was about 2 inches away from a possible Achilles.'” … Good article here about the Tigers wearing those useless titanium necklaces and creepy tinted contacts (with thanks to longtime Uni Watch pal Doug Kalemba). … The Bobcats unveiled a new alternate uni yesterday. Of course, the real story there is the sight of Adam Morrison wearing stripe-less socks — shocking! … Soccer news (courtesy of Robin Fishbein): Italy is delaying the addition of the fourth World Cup championship star to its jersey. … Meanwhile, there’s a major footwear controversy on the German team (with thanks to Pete Bonnett). … Jesse Gavin notes that Celtics rookie Kevin Pittsnogle has repeatedly been photographed with his uni number either blank or covered up (here’s another example). “Looks like they either they haven’t decided what number they want him to wear or else they didn’t have enough numbered jerseys on hand,” writes Gavin. … Turns out there’s a Yahoo group devoted to female basketball players wearing high socks. … While searching for illustrations of teachers to use at the top of this page, I came across this great photo of 1930s track star Aileen Meagher, nicknamed “The Flying Schoolmarm” (full details here). … Shinjo’s latest wristbands (courtesy of Jeremy Brahm, who also sent along an interesting shot of vertically striped wristbands). … Underbill update: Craig Hansen’s got something written under there (with thanks to Chris Mills).
About Pittsnogle… he wore no. 34 at WVU:
link
But that is Paul Pierce’s number. Since he’s the captain, it’s unlikely that he’s going to give up his number to a rookie. On the Celts’ website, he’s listed as wearing no. 51 this season:
link
Maybe hes gotten instructions on what to do to make sure the monkey doesn’t atttack him. Stay calm, no sudden movements, try not to look to scared for the cameras. He failed the third one.
When is Shinjo going to stop with these wristbands already?, vertical stripes>?
Great piece today about the names on the jerseys. I guess this another thing the Cubs will have to deal with next year when they add the namses back.
I have a last name with two capital letters in it. I’m kind of partial to the using of the small letter instead of putting a space in there on the back of a jersey. If your name isn’t a common one like McDonald you have to point out the second capital letter 98% of the time when you spell it for someone, but oh well.
The Bobcats’ jerseys are already terrible with bad font, ugly colors and ugly players, but why do they want to look like the Knicks all of a sudden. Compare link to link.
I’m pretty sure Hansen’s underbill reads: Trust the stuff. Sound advice for any pitcher!

Those Celtics uniforms are disgusting. I hope those aren’t real unis. Although I’d love them to wear their St Patty’s day unis more, the green and gold looked awesome.

I take it the parents of these girls are NOT Uni Watch readers…
Paul, the reason todays column looks way different is that it is single spaced instead of double spaced. Also, their is no title and the comments link doesn’t say comments, it just has the number. You can tell in all those Celtics pictures that Pittsnogle doesn’t have a number on and that looks tacky. As for those Bobcats alternates, I love them and they should replace their current road look. And Greg, they look NOTHING like the Knicks unis.
I’m pretty sure Hansen’s underbill reads: Trust the stuff. Sound advice for any pitcher!
That’s what it say! I blew up the image with Photoshop…
About Shinjo, he has to use flash to hide the weaknesses in his game. The guy could never really hit that well, good defensively and runs the bases well but was never MLB material.
Whichever scout judged he was missed the mark….again?! = D Those argyle sweatbands are goofy…as are most of his wristbands and that pointed undershirt he sported before. what a goober. He should’ve gotten a few up and in, i.e. a little chin music, for trying to be Prince Matchabelli…LOL!
I must admit…I really like the alternate jerseys of the Bobcats. I wish it would replace the regular orange unis.
No, that’s not Shino wearing the vertical striped-wristbands. Shinjo bats right-handed (only). Not sure who that hitter is, I think that’s the Yakult Swallows (not Shinjo’s team)…but not100% sure.

a good one about Lo_____Duca
b. It could have been cold yesterday as the mornig temp was around 70 and they were right by the water so its windy. Lets take it easy on the old man, he lives in Tampa most of the year so anything under 80 is freezing.
It has bee reported here in NY that he is quickly losing it mentally, which is why his son-in-law Steve Swindall has taken over most of the operations and they are actually having a good year
In response to the ESPN column today, the crotch extension on chest protectors are still required in little league. I remember wearing them and always having to push it down because they usually just flip up and didnt really protect anything. I’m sure that is at least some of the reason no one wears them now.
Paul, you may want to look at some pictures of Olympic hockey to get your fix on puncutated nameplates. I know that Norway and possibly Sweden had names with the ring accent, and Finland had plenty of umlauts.
In Dan Patrick’s interview with Diana Taurausi last week in ESPN the magazine, she says that she didn’t wear her socks high in college (as she now does in the WNBA) only because Geno had a strict low-sock dress code.
“It was like the Army. Everyone looked the same. The team’s philosophy was ‘Let the game do the talking, not the socks'”
Alright, Geno…how about everyone wears ’em up?

RE: the lack of accent on, e.g., Carlos Beltran’s jersey
One reason to explain why you wouldn’t find an accent on the back of Beltran’s jersey when it otherwise appears in print or on the TV screen is that the traditional convention in Spanish is to omit accents on capital letters. Since the names on the back of jerseys are usually rendered in all caps, that means no accents.
Now, I’m sure that’s not the real reason that equipment managers/uniform companies don’t put the accents on there. But it would explain why a Latin player wouldn’t complain about the lack o’ accent.
One question I have is whether there were any teams from Spanish-speaking countries who wore the all-lowercase jerseys (Puma?) in the World Cup. If so, one would expect the names on those jerseys to have accents.
Craig posted (#5) that Craig Hansen’s underbrim in the photo reads “Trust the Stuff” and sure enough it does. Click the link and scroll 1/4 down the page and it gives you a nice clear image of it though.
link
Anyone able to figure out whats in the center of his underbrim though? Looks like something else is there, but it’s not very clear.
Here’s a picture of the facemask protective thing the third baseman for the Central team was wearing last night, from an earlier game. With the sunglasses, it creates a bizarre effect.
link
It’s the 4th and 5th jerseys that teams can trot out at any given time that make me sick. I don’t really need a home alt, road alt and two or three vintage/tribute jerseys every year. Hockey and Football seem to do a better job keeping it in check than baseball and basketball.
*To limit confusion between the two Gregs that regularly post on here, I’m now going to us part of my last name. In case anyone cared… ;)
I had the same experience, Kevin Z. I didn’t like it because it flipped up (I was wearing a cup anyway) and because that’s not what the pros wear. So I just tucked mine up under the stomach.
Andrew F., she might be biting her jersey as sort of a restrictor to remind her to keep her shoulder in or something. I don’t think I’ve ever explicitly heard that advice, but I can’t think of any other reason to do that WHILE making a play.
I know Paul said otherwise, but in link pic, it looks like Saltalamacchia has his number (or something) on his collar. It’s certainly not a brand name.
In the new issue of SI out yesterday, there was a feature about women’s soccer Natl. team player Natasha Kai, and her various tattoos. In the full body link I noticed the wierd tape job on the shins and shoes. More views link, link and link. She also does it when wearing link, so I’m starting to think it’s not for looks, simply to keep her ‘guards up. And why link as well? My initial thought is for better touch/grip on the ball, like a link. I’ll do some research and get back…
football is quickly getting into ridiculous territory with the pants jersey combos…i wanna be able to turn on a game and anticipate exactly what jersey a team will be wearing…and as a die hard met fan, this is far too frustrating
Sometimes they don’t get the name right. When Lew Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Milwaukee Bucks just put JABBAR on the back of the jersey. It wasn’t until his next contract negotiation that Kareem got them to put the full name on the shirt. Try that with a player today, and you have a lawsuit.
Couldn’t find any evidence of accents on the Puma jerseys, though I seem to remember seeing it. Either way, I did notice it odd that the names on the Puma jerseys were all link unless they were link.

You recall incorrectly! From NHLUniforms.com-
“The biggest trend that started in the 1990’s was the third jersey. On January 27, 1996, Just after the All-Star break, five teams [Bruins, Kings, Penguins, Mighty Ducks, Canucks] introduced special jerseys to be worn either on Saturdays or on special occasions. Some designs, like the Bruins and the Penguins, stuck around for quite a few years, while others, like the Kings and the Mighty Ducks, were simply laughed at. Many believe — rightfully so — that the Kings and Mighty Ducks’ third jerseys from 1996 rival the Canucks “V” jerseys from the late 1970’s/early 1980’s as the ugliest of all-time.”
The 5 of them can be seen at link

I’d blame the Cowboys for this. They started it with the Jerseys with the stars on the shoulders. But don’t forget, teams would wear occasional or Sunday uniforms decades ago. It just wasn’t this encompasing.
Even for Hockey, I wouldn’t blame the Rangers, a lot of teams that same season started wearing different jerseys when they were on Fox for Saturday games.
My search turned up nothing on why Natasha Kai wears the tape the way she does. But I did find some evidence that she has been link for a while.
Paraguay wore Puma jerseys in the World Cup, and they have several players whose names should contain accents, inlcuding Salvador Cabanas and Jorge Nunez. I couldn’t find any photos of the backs of their jerseys, though.
Oh, and Paul, why is it that in softball, lefty catchers are accepted link , but in baseball, they can’t even get on the team (my coach in HS told me that a lefty catcher would never make it, destroying my hopes and dreams :tear:). I have come back full force, however, as a bullpen catcher for Hofstra University softball and previously for the New York Juggernaut of the NPF. I’ve had countless pitchers almost get scared standing in the circle when after throwing to me for months, they realize that I’m left handed.
I also am a gear ***** (as hockey goalies such as myself generally refer to them), so I’m working on my road gray set of gear for next year (I’ll be the only bullpen catcher in collegiate softball with home and away catcher’s gear). If it makes you happy, I’m going to be using an old school mask (compared to the two different goalie style masks I’ve had for the past two years), and I’m working on a Joe Mauer style of skull cap to get painted. If you (or anyone out there) has any good ideas, shoot me an e-mail at link
PM, that happened link the league link. It was the NFL’s 75th anniversary. Teams celebrated by wearing link. I think that’s what got the retro trend started. Some people were discussing this yesterday or the day before. In my opinion, that was the best link I’ve ever seen. Love it.
Did Kimo von Oelhoffen (Bengals, Steelers, Jets) ever have umlauts on the nameplate of his unis?
You can barely see it, but Nelson Valdéz has an accent on his e link and link.
link a double whammy, the umlaut on Sweden and an accent on Paraguay.
I think link is an error. I’ve never seen a tilde over a u. It was probably supposed to be for the n in a name like Acuña.

Finally, link (on the left).

opps… the missing tags are:

Paul, I’m pretty sure that Henrik Rodl had the umlaut over the o in his name when he was playing basketball at UNC.
One more apostrophe debacle: when Charlie O’Brien was catching for the Mets, the equipment manager had no apostrophes but must have had an overstock of tildes, because they turned a tilde vertically and stuck it after the O in his name. It looked excessively weird.
Dominik Hasek and Miroslav Satan should have haceks (upside-down circumflex) over the S in their names to indicate that it’s a “sh” sound, but I’ve never seen one.
When romanizing Japanese names, the usual convention is to indicate long vowels by putting a macron (horizontal bar) over them. This is what you’ll see at train stations, in the more diligent publications, etc., but in baseball, they add an H instead. I have no idea why this is, though it might be because the legendary Sadaharu Oh would be stuck with a single-letter surname. In any case, we’re stuck with bizarre names like “Satoh” and “Johjima”.
The only two exceptions I can think of, who left the long vowel mark off but didn’t add an H, both went on to play in the US: Ichiro and Shinjo. When Shinjo was with the Hanshin Tigers, he actually used the spelling “Shinjyo”:
link
…which makes no sense at all as Japanese has no “jyo” sound. People sometimes mistakenly write it for “jo”, but at the professional level I can only imagine that Tsuyoshi chose it as a precursor to the wristbands and LEDs and other attention-getting devices of his later years.

You are correct, but the following year the Cowboys began wearing a solid blue version of the star jersey and that is the one I’m refering too.
Great ESPN.com article today, I was a catcher in little league and American legion, so this one was interesting.
Those ‘super ab’ style gear has to go, I can’t believe that they help the putcher locate the plate any better than they would otherwise, has to be just a mental thing, but they are toughto see. Great point on the industrial strength bra straps, you can never see the full name and number.
That part of the MLB player’s backs must get so hot, I’m surprised catchers don’t get a heat rash back there.
In regards to the catcher’s names in the ESPN column today, as you can see on the A’s link, Kendall also sports his name sometimes.
Maybe the new York Metropolitans should shelve their black unis for a bit. It seems every time they use them they get absolutely shelled.
In early 2004, Eric Gagne requested that the Dodgers sew the accent over the ‘E’ on all his jerseys and also use the accent whenever his name appeared in print and/or TV.

Looks as though the youngsters on the Red Sox are all starting to scribble some messages on their had underbrims.

The “Throw Strikes” and “57” are obvious, but it gets tricky after that… is that a sketch of a bat and a ball on the left (his right)? Whats near the very tip of the brim? Hey Paul, think you can make a call to some people over at the sox camp?
Great Hüsker Dü reference, one of the most important bands of all time.

The Rangers did NOT start the 3rd jersey explosion – although theirs is the classiest.

Does he ever do that with his NHL jerseys? Off the top of my head I want to say no, but I don’t know for sure.
It makes sense to me that the international jerseys seem to never be missing those things. They probably deal with them more compared to the jerseys of your average American pro team.
Justin Verlander wore a larger glove last night in Boston after the White Sox claimed he was tipping his change up and that could be noticed with his small glove. The Tigers have an even larger glove on order for him.
Just read that newly acquired Eric Hinske will be wearing number 12 for the red sox since Alex Gonzalez is already wearing his number 11.
Also, check out the second paragraph on this article. Interesting tidbit on Kapler’s undershirt.

Interesting photo of Beltran. Note “Beltran” is in one font, while “New York” is in a different font. Never noticed this before.
Pudge Rodriguez is the king of personalized gear. If I am correct, his mitt was always personalized with a cursive “Pudge” and then Wilson turned it to a style of mitt.

Ah, good to know that the problems were on ESPN’s side. It was driving me nuts. They really need a total re-architecture for their system, and probably their whole fantasy system, too.
You know what would be cool?
Soccer fans know that Arsenal, for their final Highbury season, had a special home shirt that used the original color (redcurrant it’s called? a very deep red) Arsenal wore when they started playing at Highbury.
Now a suggestion for my Mets. How about we wear blue hats and plain blue pinstripe jerseys with no black accenting for the final Shea Stadium season in 1998? It’s not as cool as Arsenal or if the Yankees would omit the interlocking NY (and blank hats?), but it’d be pretty damn cool.
A sidenote. Does anyone know somewhere where I could pick up a 86 Mets jersey? Mitchell and Ness is outside my budget, and I’d really like a Keith Hernandez jersey. I can do BP, home or Away. Any ideas anyone?

There are a ton of fakes on ebay, they are usually prety easy to spot, every once and a while they get removed. M&N has guidelines on there website on what to look for (including a list of player they do not make jerseys for, OJ Simpson is one). i have bought 6 mitchell and ness jerseys from lakeshow2…all legit, all the same that you would get from the store in philly, and reasonably priced (when compared to regular price). i have had some email conversations with him as well…he put alot of time and money into the way he is able to secure his inventory. there is a ton of fraud when it comes to m & n merchandise on ebay. lakeshow2 is probably 1 of a tiny few major m & n ebay players i would trust, and is by far the most affordable. his feedback is impeccable and many people buy from him and resell at a mark up.
I have a question:
link
I’m not sure if other retailers do it, but Modells advertises this as a 1983 jersey. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in 1983 didn’t the Mets use the grey pullovers with “Mets” on the front, and with no white outline on the racing stripe? I don’t recall them using the script “New York” font until 1987. Also, shouldn’t the “Seaver” on the back be outlined in orange? That’s a pretty piss-poor job by Majestic.
I think we need to cut the Cubs equipment manager a little slack considering that the kid was called up with little warning.
i found a cooperstown collection away 87 hernandez jersey on eBay for 129 bones. I was hoping for 86 (Grey with METS on the front) or the home version, but I’ll consider this one.
Thanks guys.
Jim Deshaies just made a coment about Lance Berkman’s new shiny, white, Under Armor cleats. He said they make him look faster.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ’86 Hernandez jersey, either home or away. I think the only player who has an official ’86 jersey is Gary Carter, a home pinstriped one. I saw one at the Mets clubhouse, for a cool $299. Overpriced bastards. :P

Good ol’ Jim Deshaies, protectin’ this house.

Does he ever do that with his NHL jerseys? Off the top of my head I want to say no, but I don’t know for sure.
It makes sense to me that the international jerseys seem to never be missing those things. They probably deal with them more compared to the jerseys of your average American pro team.
I’ve never seen it on an NHL jersey with any of his teams and I’ve watched a lot of hockey.
The first year John Madden was with Fox, I remember watching a telecast and he was talking about one of the Vikings players (I think) who, according to Madden, had “two umlauts” above his name. In fact, the player had an umlaut, but Madden thought each dot was an umlaut. Wish I had visual proof of this, but alas, it’s a simple anecdote…
For some reason, Todd Steussie comes to mind. I have no idea if this is correct or not.
The first team I can remember with multiple jerseys would be the Athletics in the 1970s, with green, gold, and (for Sundays) white.
Going back to the lowercase lettering within a last name…Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro’s jersey has his name occasionally spelled with a shrunken capital ‘I’ after the D…
link
But in this picture from the 2005 US World Championship Tournament team, the first ‘I’ is actually lowercase.

For Dutch soccer players who have a “van” in their name (van Persie, van Nistelrooy), a “v.” often gets substituted for the “van”.

Updating #22 with a link that hopefully works this time:

About the colored gloves… Mike Timlin was using a camo-patterned glove for at least a game, but he hasn’t since. I wonder if the umps deemed it “too distracting”? Timlin’s a big hunter and kind of obsessed with camo.
You can see it here:

I want to say link, in regards to post #61. However, I have no recollection of whether the umlaut showed up on his jersey, and have yet to locate a pic to prove one way or the other.
I could be totally wrong on that, but… he was the first name that popped into my head who would fit that.
In response to #70 Dressed to the Nines shows this as the Mets 1983 uniforms. YOu were correct with the script Mets.
link
Here is 1987, again correct with the 1st year for the script New York, great memory.

I have a feeling Nütten did as well. Adam Loewen (which means “Lions” in German) of the Orioles should really do it – Löwen (the umlaut takes place of the ‘e’ in certain instances like this)…like Löwenbräu
Did anyone else notice last night Gary Matthews, Jr. batting right handed while wearing a left handed batting helmet? I am sure you will let me know if this is a common occurrence.
I just wanted to say great idea for the ESPN column. The catcher nametag thing is something I’ve never really paid attention to before.
I caught as a kid in little league, in HS, in American Legion and now in my adult league. I have no problem making the throw to third on a steal, and I have an advantage over right handed catchers in making the throw to first on bunts from the pitchers mound to the third base line.
Which reminds me of the interesting uniform note that I have to wear the chest protector inside out, since it is asymmetrical.

Hmmm. a cool orange uniform, in my opinion the best in the NBA and then Reebok takes the alternate blue into a different pattern…not such a good idea…
The Bobcats have been Vectorized by Reebok.

Somebody that has a circumflex is Nenê of the nuggets. Ever since he dropped the Hilario, he’s had it.
Paul,
For your college football preview, Syracuse has new uniforms (again) for 2006-07. I think they got them right this time. Kind of a Colts look, but with navy and orange. No white. Only two colours. Nice look.

Thanks for the shout, Moten. (I loved Larry Moten, white spot on the noodle & all!)Are the helmets remainining the same. What’s your call? Are they bringing home more than 3 victories ?
am i the only one who is completely sick of 3rd jerseys? why not 2 jerseys only for every team? i blame my new york rangers, because if i recall correctly, they were the first team to start this recent third jersey explosion back with their “mike richter helmet ” jerseys
I’m w/ you on this… I hate that Rangers’ 3rd. jersey…down to that navy blue they use. Diagonal Rangers always !
Dave, i think the only spanish speaking national side that belongs in that Puma subset is Paraguay & if my memory serves (mostly doesn’t these days) they did not have accents or tildes.

THAT’S THE ONE! It was Nütten… Thank you! “He’s got two unlauts!”
Is it just me, or does it look like that “Flying Schoolmarm” has a penis in that photo?
If the accent belongs on the “a” in Beltran, that means everyone pronounces his name incorrectly.
Regardless of importance, Husker Du rules…
