  • Morocco’s culture ministry is upset about a new warmup shirt the Algerian national team is wearing. Morocco alleges that the shirt depicts the geometric pattern zellige (or zellij), and that it’s cultural appropriation. Adidas says the pattern is based on a palace in Algeria.   • Tomorrow, Brazilians go to the polls to elect a President. Supporters of right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro have adopted the iconic yellow shirt of the Brazilian national team, leading those who oppose Bolsonaro to distance themselves from the once-ubiquitous jersey.     The Morocco/Algeria piece made for a good headline over on FARK: “Morocco demands that Adidas remove Algeria’s football tops. Isn’t that a bit kinky, Morocco?”

    If teams want to slap a company’s name on their image, they should be forced to wear it for the length of the deal, even if they turn out to be a company with a negative reputation. The punishment for selling out. The Blazers should have to suck it up, just as the Astros should have when they sold their stadium’s name to Enron.
