Minors
- New logo for the Valley Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. (From Matt Drury)
- A Phillie Phanatic cupcake? Yes, please. (From Trevor Williams)
- Fun fact in the wake of last night’s World Series no-hitter: Every pitcher and catcher involved in a WS no-no has worn a Houston uni at some point, including Don Larsen, who played for the Colt .45s in the 1960s, and his catcher, Yogi Berra, who coached for the Astros in the 1980s.
Football
NFL
- Pat McAfee is pissed off because the NFL won’t let him use their logo on his YouTube show.
- The Eagles will go white over white for tonight’s game against the Texans. (Thanks, Phil)
- In a disappointing development, the Bills will once again go blue over blue this week.
College
- K-State QB Will Howard says his recent success is due to a new uni number. (Thanks, Phil)
- Also from Phil: Here are this week’s uni combos for Oregon and Utah.
- Georgia will wear a memorial patch for former coach Vince Dooley this weekend. (From @bassindawg)
Hockey
NHL
- The Lightning will debut their RR uni for tonight’s home game against the Hurricanes. Since the RR design is white, the Canes will wear black on the road. (From Al Hood)
- The Wild tried out their RR pants, gloves, and helmets in a recent practice session. (From @MKEBucksCat)
- Here’s the Capitals’ “Hockey Fights Cancer” pregame jersey, which they’ll wear on Nov. 19, along with the “HFC” schedule for the entire league. (Thanks, Jamie)
- Whoa, check out this old photo of a Sabres softball team — including a few guys wearing stirrups! (From Mike Monaghan)
- Speaking of the Sabres, they debuted their new RR uniforms last night — and it was quite a white sight. This is why it’s so important for teams to unveil the full uniform, not just the jersey.
- In that same game, the Pens debuted their own RRs, which, as it turns out, have Robo-Penguin on the chest and the skating penguin on the pants.
Basketball
NBA
- The latest NBA leaks are the City alternates for the Cavs and Blazers. These both match the catalog leak from earlier this year and are therefore presumptively legit. The real unveiling will come sometime in the next couple of weeks.
- Jordan Fischer spotted this truck with a Lakers-style logo during his morning commute yesterday.
College
- New men’s uniforms for D2 Newman University. (From Blake Cripps)
- Memphis men’s will retire Lorenzen Wright’s No. 55 at some point this season. (Thanks, Phil)
Soccer
USA
- The NWSL Players Association has a new logo. (Thanks, Jamie)
- The latest team in the Canadian Premier League will be called Vancouver FC. (From Wade Heidt)
International
- Germany’s VfL Bochum revealed a rainbow-accented black shirt to be worn in their men’s Bundesliga game this weekend. “It’s supposed to represent tolerance and diversity (which is what German clubs usually say when they wear rainbow),” says our own Jamie Rathjen. “But there’s also a uni-related story behind it, because 25 years ago Bochum played in the UEFA Cup wearing shirts that were half-rainbow on the front.”
Grab Bag
- Australian Football League club Hawthorn is holding a vote on a throwback for their men’s team to wear next year. “All three choices were worn in preseason games in the ’90s, so that means they’re pretty out there,” says our own Jamie Rathjen.

That Sabres set could’ve been saved by some blue pants, but alas….YUCK.
I’ll go a step further: a really cool jersey is rendered ugly by pairing it with the white pants.
Nailed it…
Agreed. Just wear their regular blue pants, blue gloves and white helmets and they would have looked sharp.
They showed some real restraint there with the blue helmet. I mean, if you’re going to go with white pants, why not go all in and throw on the white bucket? Either way my eyes are going to be burned out of my skull.

Second day in a row this line started the ticker off, love it.
I prefer this over “in today’s ticker we have…“
Larson actually pitched for the newly-christened Astros in ’65…1 start:

Here’s his jersey from that lone game:

Playing name the Sabre from that softball photo. I think I recognize, Phil Housley, Mike Foligno, Mike Ramsey, Dave Andreychuk and John Tucker. There’s a few more I feel I should know. I keep changing my mind about the guy near the end of the front row being Lindy Ruff or not.
Add Brent Peterson. Pretty sure he’s the player on far right of front row.
And Jerry (King Kong) Korab far right, back row
So, the Utes go for their best look with the beautiful red and white school colors. Meanwhile, the Ducks’ unis make them look like they were vomited on by a homeless guy in Portland.
Just callin’ it as I see it.
I really don’t understand why the Sabres wore their blue helmets with their otherwise white-dominated unis. It just threw everything off for me.
As for the Pens, they just wore their regular pants. If they wanted period-accurate pants, they’d be plain black without the stripes.
I think a yellow helmet would have been perfect
The Pens’ pants are their everyday pants, hence, no deviation from the standard “skating penguin” logo.
During the WS broadcast, Smoltz wondered if two cities played against each other in the WS and the NFL on the same day (Eagles @ Texans and Astros @ Phillies tonight). It was never answered on air, but it has happened multiple times before:
10/2/32 Game 4 (Yankees @ Cubs) + Week 3 (Bears @ Staten Island Stapletons)
10/2/38 Game 2 (Yankees @ Cubs) + Week 4 (Brooklyn Dodgers @ Chicago Cardinals)
10/9/60 Game 4 (Pirates @ Yankees) + Week 3 (Giants @ Steelers)
10/12/75 Game 2 (Reds @ Red Sox) + Week 4 (Bengals @ Patriots)
11/1/09 Game 4 (Yankees @ Phillies) + Week 8 (Eagles @ Giants)
10/23/11 Game 4 (Cardinals @ Rangers) + Week 7 (Cowboys @ Rams)
11/3/22 Game 5 (Astros @ Phillies) + Week 9 (Eagles @ Texans)
Actually, they did mention on the broadcast that it had happened 7 times, although they didn’t list them.
I wonder how many of those were played at the same time, as will happen tonight.
The 1938 game (Chicago Cardinals vs Brooklyn Dodgers) was in Brooklyn, not Chicago
I didn’t know that off the top of my head LOL – I was checking to see if any of the games were in the same city, and that one stuck out because the Cubs and Cardinals shared Wrigley in those days.
The only same-city match was 1975 (Red Sox at Fenway, Patriots at Foxboro)
The two games in 2009 were both in Philadelphia. Eagles-Giants in the afternoon, Phillies-Yankees at night.
If the Sabres keep playing like they did in the 3rd, they can wear all-white all year long.
My issue with the game was the Bruins wearing the Robo-Penguin on their chests. Man, you gotta make a better effort in distinguishing your brand from others from a distance. Even their triangle yokes were bad.
Bruins! Maybe that proves your point.
I get the Marketing aspect, but this getting ridiculous with Oregon. The NCAA needs to pass a rule on many designs can be used in a year.
Please. 1) That ship sailed long ago and 2) with NIL now firmly in place, I’m sure the NCAA is more than happy to be a “party” to whatever additional merch sales this entails. And don’t look now, but the NFL is headed in this direction.
The Sabres looked ridiculous in white pants. No hockey team should ever wear them as you need some contrast between the white ice and boards. The blue helmet was also a significant faux pas.
I’ve always thought the Ducks “Midnight Green” looked like the color of the duck and geese poop you see around a lake or pond in mid-winter. Is that what they were going for? Am I the only one seeing that?
Huge downgrade on the Blue Sox logo. The existing version was cleaner and had a strong word mark, making it easy to reproduce. This version is more of an illustration with a bunch of unnecessary shading and makes the city/region illegible.
