In today’s Ticker: More UVa memorials, a fun 1960s baseball/basketball crossover, and a lot more.

Baseball

MLB

  • Check out this late-1960s photo of the Reds’ basketball team. Love the sleeve stripes.
  • FTX ad patches will not be worn by MLB umpires in 2023 following the firm’s embarrassing collapse earlier this month. MLB will presumably find another advertiser for that space next season (insert eyeglasses/optician joke here).
Football

NFL

  • Here is what the Ravens will be wearing this Sunday against the Panthers. (From Andrew Cosentino)
  • Kansas City safety Juan Thornhill is an ex-Virginia player and is wearing a memorial to the three players murdered on campus on his cleats this weekend. (Thanks, Jamie)

College

Hockey

Minors/Juniors

  • The WHL’s Saskatoon Blades will be wearing 1990s throwbacks tonight. (From Wade Heidt)
Basketball

College

  • UVa men will have uniform patches in memory of the three students killed this week. (Thanks, Jamie)
  • Virginia Tech men wore “Hokies for Hoos” warm-up shirts in solidarity with the UVa community following the murder of three UVa football players on campus earlier this week. (From Andrew Cosentino)

More

  • Cross-posted from the baseball section: Check out this late-1960s photo of the Reds’ basketball team. Love the sleeve stripes.
Auto Racing
  • Alpine F1 driver Fernando Alonso will have a helmet honoring Sebastian Vettel at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which will be Vettel’s last. The two dominated the sport in the early 2010s.
Rugby
  • Major League Rugby’s newest expansion team will be called the Chicago Hounds. I am loving that crest. (From Sy Hart)

I politely disagree, but only because white is not a school color. Substitute black for all of the white elements, and it’s a solid uniform.

One might go so far as to call it WFWS (white for whitney’s sake). If this site is gonna keep playing that game, you gotta do it here too; not just picking on black and gray!

All? Black pants with a single gold stripe? No white outlines on numbers or school name? Black helmet with single gold stripe and gold script? IMHO the white makes the numbers and name and striping pop. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to

The Chicago Hounds crest is just checking all of the “Chicago” boxes. Y municipal device, check. Six pointed star, check. Light blue color, check. Well done. Love it.

The reverse retros is the best thing the NHL has ever done. Just about all the teams has a great remix of their uniform. A real treat for the eyes for a change.

Why did the Reds have a basketball team? Who did they play against? Other MLB Team basketball squads? I’d love to see some action shots.

Google will get you some pics. YouTube link. It’s less than a minute and has no sound but Pete Rose is in there. Plenty of pro clubs had hoops teams that played for fun/charity in the 60s. I know the Baltimore Colts had one that had Johnny Unitas and company playing

The Bengals and Browns both had basketball teams and played at various high schools in Ohio. They played at my school in Western Ohio sometime in the late 80’s.

Those Missouri helmets are incredible. I wish they could have a better font on the jersey to match the helmet better. Still a really solid look for them.

It was discussed yesterday in the comments about players looking sloppy and mismatched when it comes to socks, untucked undershirts and cleats. It’s bad when the first thing you notice in the Cal uniform video is that the players undershirts are long an untucked. It takes away from a great uniform. Even worse, the undershirts cover the logo on the pants that they clearly there for a reason. It’s a trend I hope goes away soon.

The Broncos “color-rash” uniforms are so, so bad. A navy jersey with sleeve stripes and navy pants would have been a much better option. Maybe next year now that the “one helmet rule” has been lifted, they can break out a throwback that we ALL know would look much better.
