The park was built in 2017, meaning the Angels had been going by the LA moniker for over 12 years by the time this scoreboard saw use, which means this had to be intentional by someone. I got that same ’75 NFL lunchbox at a flea market in the mid 80s. Still have it. As a kid you see something (like the league) as it exists at that time and in your mind it’s always been that way, so the lunchbox was interesting to me because it didn’t have the Bucs and Seahawks on it, and a few other teams has helmets that didn’t match what I knew.

In 1979, the New Rochelle High School hockey team (The Huguenots) took to calling themselves the Rebels and sewed Confederate flags to their sweaters, because the players bonded over a shared love of southern rock. When the players graduated out of the program, the Rebels identity petered out as well. It was not without controversy, but didn’t cause any fights, just a rebuke from the principal.

It was LaMelo Ball who switched his number from 2 to 1 earlier this week, not his brother Lonzo.

I can’t say this for sure, but I think a good number of schools moved away from Confederate themes long before 1990. For example, my father attended North Mecklenburg HS in Charlotte during the 60’s when they were the Rebels. They changed that to the Vikings in the mid-70’s (I tried but couldn’t find the exact year).
