Guess the Game from the Scoreboard for August 30, 2022

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Blue Hen.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date & location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

“Pittsburg” actually was the official spelling at the time, according to the federal government’s Board on Geographic Names – they didn’t switch to the “Pittsburgh” spelling until 1911.

    Pirates 7-Phillies 6
    July 17, 1909
    Baker Bowl
I can’t tell why the game is significant though.

Saturday July 17, 1909 at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

Vic Willis pitching for the Pirates and Smokey Joe Woods pitching for the Red Sox helped me narrow it down to 1908 or 1909 when both players pitched for their respective teams.

Smokey Joe Wood had no “S” at the end of his name. I wonder if that is a misspelling or a different player.

Does anyone know the story about this scoreboard? It doesn’t look like it’s at the park. Was this at a betting parlor?

It’s called a “Play-o-Graph” — Paul wrote a nice piece on them a dozen or so years ago: link

I think you got the wrong link there, the one provided goes to today’s scoreboard picture. Did you mean this page? link

Good catch — yes, that’s the link I meant. Edited my comment to reflect the correct one. Thank you!

Looks like the scoreboard is really for Monday, July 19, 1909 @ Baker Bowl

    Pittsburgh 5 – Philadelphia 4

The left side of the scoreboard is the live part that had a display operated by someone reading a ticker tape from the game so people downtown could follow the game “live”, while the right side had yesterday’s scores.

Oddly enough, I found this page also asking for the date of this game: link

Based on Moran and Cammitz being the current pitchers in the game, looks like the picture was taken sometime between the 5th and 8th innings, as Cammitz entered the game in the 5th after a pinch hitter removed Maddox. Moran had started the game and pitched through the 8th, before being pinch hit for and replaced in the 9th by Corridon, who gave up a run and took the loss.

It’s a bit hard to see, but today’s scoreboard is displayed in the lower center of the photo, on the side of the Philadelphia Record (newspaper) building in downtown Philly. Shorpy’s always fun!
