Guess The Game From The Scoreboard for August 9, 2022

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Jason Strong.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date & location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

This appears to be June 22, 1974, based on the Rangers defensive alignment and based on how the runs were scored. Nolan Ryan and the Angels won 7-4. Ryan pitched a complete game, striking out 10, for his 9th win of the season, in which he’d strike out 367 batters, still 5th all time in the modern era.

So it’s definitely from before 1985, when the Rangers removed that scoreboard.
And I’m guessing 11 at SS is Toby Harrah, which has to put it 1978 or prior.
And the Rangers didn’t have a #5 on the roster after 1976.

After some sleuthing on Baseball Reference, it looks like this was June 22, 1974. Nolan Ryan started for Angels and pitched a CG.

June 22, 1974. Nice and tidy complete game 10 striker performance for Ryan. And yes, that was Mickey Rivers in centerfield for the Angels.

I like how they squeeze the home plate umpire in at the bottom.

Today, thanks in part to combining both leagues’ numbering, there are three-digit umpire numbers so this scoreboard wouldn’t work now.
