OK, it’s day two of the uniform/bowl preview. If you missed yesterday, Click Here.
“Petroleum Bowl” (“Alamo Bowl”)
Oregon Ducks vs. Texas Longhorns
Designated Home Team: Horns
Date/Time/Location: Monday, December 30; 6:45pm; Alamodome, San Antonio, TX (ESPN)
Spread: Oregon is a 14.5 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Well, with Friday’s news that the Duckies would be wearing a new uniform for this bowl (uni pics here), it still won’t change my betting strategy of basing my decision of picking based on the unis worn for the 2013 season. Not that it would matter. I LOVE the Longhorns uni. Texas is the “home” team, so they’ll probably wear their burnt orange tops (so we’ll likely see the Ducks in this). Better not mess with Texas here.
The Pick: Give me the Longhorns and the 14.5 points.
“We Don’t Even Have A Football Team But Somehow We’re Sponsoring This Bowl” (“Holiday Bowl”)
Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Designated Home Team: Texas Tech
Date/Time/Location: Monday, December 30; 10:15pm; Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA (ESPN)
Spread: ASU is a 14 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
This is a tough one, because both teams never met a uniform they didn’t like. And I’m pretty sure neither wore the same combo twice during the season. T-Tech got some pretty nice unis to start the season but then went on to wear a host of special unis & helmets. ASU never (or maybe once?) repeated a combo, and they have like 4 different helmets (in addition to this one off). Still, in a vacuum, and because they never quit, I’ll have to lean towards ASU. All we know for sure is they’ll have white jerseys.
The Pick: Give me the Devils and I’ll overcome the 14 points.
“Nutritional Supplements Bowl” (“Independence Bowl”)
Arizona Wildcats vs. Boston College Eagles
Designated Home Team: BC
Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, December 31; 12:30pm; Independence Stadium, Shereveport, LA (ESPN)
Spread: Arizona is favored by 7.5 points
Preview
Bowl History
This one is an easy call, since Arizona, like its in-state rival, wears a plethora of helmets and unis, while BC has returned to a very simple uniform set. Football may not be BC’s best sport, but they’ll probably look better on the field. And that’s good enough for me.
The Pick: I’ll take the Eagles and the points.
“Car Manufacturer Bowl” (“Sun Bowl”)
UCLA Bruins vs. Virginia Tech Hokies
Designated Home Team: UCLA
Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, December 31; 2:00pm; Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, TX (CBS)
Spread: UCLA is favored by 7 points
Preview
Bowl History
Ah, the Sun Bowl — might as well call it the “Mothervilker Bowl” (don’t worry, that’s an inside joke), but our late, great 5&1 guru Jim Vilk’s favorite bowl (and the only football game he watches, nowadays) is this one. And why not, look at this location! Also, the game is on free tv, so that helps. Anyway, uni match-up pick is somewhat easy. UCLA, despite adidas basically ruining their UCLA stripes (they used to be shoulder loops, back in the dark ages) and their midnight black uni, they’re still a bit ahead of VT. Now, VT’s unis have improved greatly in the past couple years, but there are simply too many of them. I’ll tell you what, though, there is a movement afoot to make this game color vs. color, and that could look really good. Either way, I gotta give UCLA the nod here.
The Pick: I’ll take the Bruins and give the touchdown.
“Auto Parts Bowl” (“Liberty Bowl”)
Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Rice Owls
Designated Home Team: Miss State
Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, December 31; 4:00pm; Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, TN (ESPN)
Spread: Mississippi State is a 7 point favorite
Preview
Bowl Facts
This should be a good looking game, provided Mississippi State doesn’t wear one of its special clown costumes, but I’m anticipating they’ll play it straight. Rice, on the other hand, only seemed to cave to Pinktober (as did several schools) but otherwise stuck with their classic navy and white. That’s enough in my book to give them the nod here.
The Pick: I’ll take the Owls and the touchdown worth of points.
“Chicken Sandwich Bowl” (“Peach Bowl”)
Duke Blue Devils vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Designated Home Team: aTm
Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, December 31; 8:00pm; Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA (ESPN)
Spread: Texas A&M is a 12 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
This one is another tough call, because it features two teams with pretty nice “standard” uniforms. Duke, of recent years, has a tendency to wear black, when it’s not really a school color. aTm, on the other hand, will don a clownsuit to assuage adidas. Both teams should be on their best uni behavior for this game, but I’m reluctantly going to give my nod to Duke. Barely.
The Pick: I’ll take the Blue Devils and the 12 points.
“Tax Preparation Bowl” (“Gator Bowl”)
Georgia Bulldogs vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers
Designated Home Team: Georgia
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1; 12:00 noon; Everbank Field, Jacksonville, FL (ESPN2)
Spread: Georgia is a 9 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Why can’t I get a match-up of one of these teams against say, Texas Tech or Rutgers? Both teams have great unis, with the Dawgs getting new, slightly tweaked unis this year. They stuck with the classic red dome and silver britches the whole year, and wore only red or white jerseys. Nebraska, like so many adidas teams, wore a one game costume that marred an otherwise stellar uni season. But that one slip is enough to push me towards Georgia.
The Pick: I’ll take the Bulldogs and give the 9 points.
“Heart of Dallas Bowl” (“Zombie Cotton Bowl”)
North Texas Mean Green vs. UNLV Runnin’ Rebels
Designated Home Team: North Texas
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1; 12:00 noon; Cotton Bowl, Dallas, TX (ESPNU)
Spread: North Texas is a 6.5 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
The “Zombie Cotton Bowl” is played in another great old stadium, but no longer actually hosts the “Cotton” bowl (which is played in Jerryworld). Shame. This game is also relegated to ESPNU, but it’s worth checking out just the same. Now then, both of these teams had a surprisingly nice uni season, with the Mean Green donning a gorgeous throwback for a game. UNLV mixes gray, red and white, but is very consistent in their look and striping (which after some time with pit stains and bumpersticker piping, looks good now). It’s tempting to go with NT, but UNLV has looked better this year.
The Pick: I’ll take the Rebels and the points.
“Bank and Credit Card Bowl” (“Citrus Bowl”)
South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Wisconsin Badgers
Designated Home Team: South Carolina
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1; 1:00pm; Citrus Bowl, Orlando, FL (ABC)
Spread: Pick ’em
Preview
Bowl History
The Gamecocks have had some pretty bad uniforms and uni shenanigans in the past, but this year they got new uniforms, and they’ve looked pretty good. Wisconsin has classic unis as well, but this year they added a red helmet (with both white stripes and black & white stripes). I think that’s a nice addition to a nice set. Close call, but I will lean towards Sconnie.
The Pick: Give me the Badgers in a straight-up game.
“Steakhouse Bowl” (“Hall of Fame Bowl”)
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. LSU Tigers
Designated Home Team: LSU
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1, 1:00pm; Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL (ESPN)
Spread: LSU is a 7 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Yet another match-up between two teams who just don’t screw around with the uniforms. The Hawkeyes still look like the Steelers, only with decals on both sides of their helmets (and better fonts & sleeve stripes). LSU always wears white (except once a year when it wears purple) and they recently got their UCLA stripes fixed (beginning with last year’s bowl). That uni continued into this year. They also had a slight tweak to their block fonts. It’s a close call, uni wise, but I’ll give the ever-so-slight edge to LSU.
The Pick: I’ll take the Tigers and give the seven.
“Rose Bowl” (“Rose Bowl”)
Michigan State Spartans vs. Stanford Cardinal
Designated Home Team: Sparty
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1; 5:00pm; Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA; ESPN)
Spread: Stanford is a 4.5 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Ah. The Granddaddy. The Rose. It would smell as sweet by any other name. And this is the 100th playing of the game (the oldest of all the bowls, having first been played in 1902). I could go on and on, but let’s stick to the unis. Once again, a classic match-up featuring GREEN WHITE Sparty and Cardinal Red Stanford. Both have great unis (although MSU’s are a bit more ‘modern’ having undergone a Nike tweak a few years back), but that green is gorgeous. They added green pants for the first time in years, but that’s their only change of recent note. Stanford has only one flaw, and that’s when they go BFBS for one game a year. Ugh. Everything else about the Cardinal is so great (and we can be pretty sure they’ll be wearing white versus Sparty’s green), but the BFBS is enough to tip the scales to MSU.
The Pick: Gimme Sparty and I’ll take the 4 and a half points.
“Tortilla Chip Bowl” (“Salad Bowl”)
Baylor Bears vs. UCF Knights
Designated Home Team: Baylor
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, January 1; 8:30pm; University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ (ESPN)
Spread: Baylor is a 16.5 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
You’d think with Baylor’s Oregon-like propensity for uni machinations, I’d have no problem picking whoever their opponent for this game happens to be. And, in many cases, you’d be right. But UCF shares a uniform template with Rutgers, right down to the collar horns and shoulder stripes…and those “sword” things down the pants. It’s bad enough that one team has this, but this is enough to move Baylor to my pick. Yep. Shocking, I know.
The Pick: I’ll take the Bears and give all those points.
“Insurance Bowl” (“Sugar Bowl”)
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Oklahoma Sooners
Designated Home Team: Tide
Date/Time/Location: Thursday, January 2; 8:30pm; Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, LA (ESPN)
Spread: Alabama is a 14.5 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
With the New Year’s Day games behind us, we move into the weeknight specials beginning with the Sugar. And, as fate (and a 109-yard missed field goal return) would have it, Alabama finds itself in a game without the initials “BS” in it. Now, if you’ve been reading Uni Watch for some time, you’ll now that waaaaaay back in the dark ages, Jim Vilk and I graded all the FBS unis and picked our favorites. Then, as now, mine is Alabama. That means that no matter which team comes up against them, the Tide will get the nod. They have two unis: Home and Road. Period. Why do I like them so much? Maybe it’s because I’m biased towards my alma mater, who’ve worn this look (with NO special unis) since before most of you were born. Ahem. Anyway, as great as Boomer Sooner looks, it’s no contest.
The Pick: Gimme the Tide and take the points.
“Telecom Bowl” (“Bastard Cotton Bowl”)
Missouri Tigers vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys
Designated Home Team: Mizzou
Date/Time/Location: Friday, January 3; 7:30pm; AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX (FOX)
Spread: Missouri is a 1 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Wow. I get TWO games on my birthday this year, and the first on them is on FOX, with the “new” Cotton Bowl, or as they’re calling it, the “Cotton Bowl Classic.” Bullshit. This ain’t the Cotton Bowl I remember, but whatever. The matchup between Mizzou and OSU isn’t that easy a pick. You see, I actually like a couple of Mizzou’s uni combos (although that anthracite uni is rough). But any combo of the black and gold is a-ok by me. I also like the Cowboys’ black and orange, but they have as many or more combos as Mizzou. It’s almost a coin flip, but I gotta side with the black and gold here.
The Pick: I’ll take the Tigers and give the point.
“Credit Card Bowl” (“Orange Bowl”)
Clemson Tigers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
Designated Home Team: THE OSU
Date/Time/Location: Friday, January 3; 8:00pm; Sun Life Stadium, Miami, FL (ESPN)
Spread: Buckeye is a 3 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
The second bowl of my birthday features the Tigers (of Clemson) against THE Ohio State University. For the past couple years, Clemson’s had GREAT unis, wearing orange lids, either orange or white tops, and white pants. This year, in a special game, they went with the mono purple. OK, it’s a school color and all, but I’m not a fan. Their opponents, THE OSU, wore a couple special unis, including one with white pants(!) in their rivalry game in the Big House. OSU has such great scarlet & gray regular unis, they don’t need to resort to shiny helmeted-gimmicks to attract recruits. I’d probably have taken Clemson regardless, but the clownsuits sealed the deal.
The Pick: I’ll take the Tigers and the field goal.
“Bank Bowl” (“Vulcan Bowl”)
Houston Cougars vs. Vanderbilt Commodores
Designated Home Team: Houston
Date/Time/Location: Saturday, January 4; 1:00pm; Legion Field, Birmingham, AL (ESPN)
Spread: Vandy is a 3 point favorite
Preview
Bowl History
Sandwiched between the great New Year’s Day (and after) bowls and the BCS game, we get a couple “meh” bowls, and this is one of them. Uni wise, Houston started out the season with just their red and white combos, but added a BFBS alternate they ended up wearing not once, but twice. The kids love it and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in this bowl. Vandy, on the other hand, goes with black, gold and white, and while they mix and match ad infinitum, they do stick with the same basic uni throughout. It’s not going to be a pretty game, I’m guessing, but the BFBS edged Houston out of the pick.
The Pick: I’ll take the Commodores and give up the field goal.
“Web Hosting Bowl” (“Rosa Bowl”)
Arkansas State Red Wolves vs. Ball State Cardinals
Designated Home Team: Ball State
Date/Time/Location: Sunday, January 5; 9:00pm; Ladd Peebles Stadium, Mobile, AL (ESPN)
Spread: Ball State is favored by 9 points
Preview
Bowl History
The “Web Hosting” bowl (heh) is just killing time in the schedule for the BCS game, and the uni matchup of Ark State and Ball State isn’t exactly appealing. Neither is the 9:00 pm Sunday start. Given that both teams have pretty atrocious uniforms, this one is a tough pick, but the least-worse of the two is Ball State.
The Pick: I’ll take the Cardinals and give up the points.
“National Championship” (“1-2 Buckle-My-Shoe Bowl”)
Florida State Seminoles vs. Auburn Tigers
Designated Home Team: Auburn (???? — according to this)
Date/Time/Location: Monday, January 6; 8:30pm; Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA (ESPN)
Spread: FSU is a 9 point favorite
Preview
BCS History
And finally, our LAST BCS National Championship Game (next year we go to playoffs). And the two teams in the game couldn’t have finer unis. Both FSU and AU have only TWO possible uniforms, and both are really, really nice. FSU’s garnet and gold and Auburn’s blue and orange. Either one would be a good choice, but I’m a bit more of a fan of the garnet and gold. It’s a really, really close call though.
The Pick: I’ll take the Seminoles and give the points.
And there you have it folks. Picking the teams by uni. Below I’ll update you on how I did for yesterday’s first four games and TJ will give a review of those games. Thanks for humoring me these past two days with this — I probably spent 16 hours or so on these two posts, and I hope you guys appreciate the previews. But, it’s a labor of love, as always.
And The New Hornets Logo is…
Last evening the Charlotte Bobcats, who will rebrand as the Charlotte Hornets next season, unveiled their new logo. Nine of them actually. I watched the livestream, which featured MJ and a few famous Hornets from years past (like Muggsy Bogues and Kelly Tripucka), and this was the image that hung on the screen for about a minute. Wasn’t really much of an unveiling. But…
There are better images. First these:
And these (click on each to enlarge):
And then this whole pyramid which shows all nine logos to be used (and marketed):
Not bad, right? Certainly better than what the Bobcats are using and it brings back the original teal and purple colorscheme. They’re new updates on an original classic.
Of course, they’re yet to reveal the new uniforms. One can only hope those will bear a close resemblance to the original. Yeah, it was teal and it was dated even then, but it would be great if they bring it back for 2014! Or at least that is my opinion. Wanna know more? Darren Rovell had this out about 10 minutes after the unveiling.
So what say you readers, what do you think of the new Hornets’ logos?
Pickin’ The Bowls
I’d hoped to have a segment from my SMUW cohort, Terry Duroncelet here, where he gives us a rundown of the Bowl games from yesterday. Unfortunately, TJ and I miscommunicated and he thought we weren’t doing his reviews until next weekend. As such we’ll get to those next weekend. Anyway…how’d I do with my new Bowl Picking by Uni technique?
So far so good, and there was more than a little luck involved. But in the first game I took CSU (getting 4.5). Final score: CSU 48-WSU 45; Next game I went with USC (giving 6). Final score: USC 45-FSU 20; Third game I picked SDSU (getting 1). Final score: SDSU 49-SUNYB 24. Last game I ran with ULL (2.5 point dogs). Final score: ULL 24-Tulane 21.
So that’s 4 for 4 so far for those of you keeping score at home. I’m sure my luck won’t hold out, but this is a great start to the Bowl Season.
Again, sorry there are no Bowl recaps today but there will be next weekend.
Colorize This!
Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.
Just one colorization today, and it’s from Pete Woychick, another of our oustanding colorizers.
Pete, of course, has a story to go with his colorization. Click on image to enlarge.
Hi Phil””
I chose this photo simply because these stock action poses always make me smile, but then I learned that Kenny “Kingfish” Washington is actually a pretty significant figure in football history. A teammate of Jackie Robinson at UCLA (baseball and football), he went on to break the NFL’s color barrier in the modern (post-WWII) era.
“What Kenny had to go through was in some ways harder than what Jackie Robinson had to endure,” Sariñana-Lampson said. “You could dodge a ball in baseball. But the Rams handed him the ball.”
Forgotten hero: Washington broke NFL’s color barrier in 1946According to Wikipedia, “his number 13 jersey was the first to be retired at UCLA.” I don’t know if that means the photo was mislabeled, or if Washington occasionally wore another number?
Cheers!
””Pete
That’s it for today. Great work, as always, by Pete. OK colorizers, let’s keep the colorizations coming!
Uni Tweaks Concepts
We have another new set of tweaks, er…concepts today. After discussion with a number of readers, it’s probably more apropos to call most of the reader submissions “concepts” rather than tweaks. So that’s that.
So if you’ve concept for any sport, or just a tweak or wholesale revision, send them my way.
Please do try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per image — if you have three uniform concepts in one image, then obviously, you can go a little over, but no novels, OK? OK!. You guys have usually been good with keeping the descriptions pretty short, and I thank you for that.
Like the colorizations, I’m going to run these as inline pics — click on each one to enlarge.
And so, lets begin:
We begin today with Paul Lee, who has a concept for the Dallas Mavericks:
Hey Phil,
80’s style Dallas Mavericks tweak.
Paul Lee
Next up is Trent Daniel, with a set of Cleveland Browns concepts and logos I’ll do this as a slideshow (and a link will follow for those who can’t view slideshows on their chosen device):
Here’s a link to the slideshow.
Phil,
I heard that Cleveland will be getting some updates to their look in the next couple of years, so I thought I would take a shot at the redesign myself. I simplified their current alternate logo and made it the primary, and emphasized the stripe design in the logo for the uniforms. As for the helmet, I wanted to keep it pretty similar to the traditional one they’ve worn for ages, but added some slight modifications to the helmet stripe and face mask. I also included an alternate white helmet that looks pretty slick with the all white ensemble. Hope you enjoy!
Trent Daniel
We close today with Antonio Bradley who has retro take for the Padres:
Phil:
With the possibility of the Padres returning to brown, I created this uni concept with a brown head spoon. I am a fan of the old school uniforms that have colored head spoons and hope some team(s) adopt this look. Also included thick brown sleeve and pant stripes.
Thank You,
Antonio Bradley
And that’s it for today. Back with more next time.
Too Good…
…For the Ticker
Got a few things from Leo Strawn that are simply “Too Good For The Ticker” (TGFTT).
First, check out this video:
I’ll let Leo take it from here:
“I’m still curious if this black Gamecocks helmet (shown in the video) had ever been featured on Uni Watch? I discovered they were not worn on field, but rather given to South Carolina seniors from 1970-74 by their coach at the time, Dietzel. The video also has a shot of Dana Carpenter in his New York Stars WFL uni, and also his helmet from the Charlotte Hornets.
“Speaking of the Hornets, an acquaintance of mine saw this on eBay, from the team’s auction after the WFL folded in ’75. $20 for a game worn jersey!
“Down under, the AFL’s Brisbane Lions asked supporters earlier this year to vote on a jumper design, the original Brisbane Lions design (worn after the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears had merged) or the more recent, and highly unpopular, “paddle pop” lion. Brisbane’s fans roared (pun intended) and the team listened, and they will change back to the original design, starting in 2015. This video has some shots of the sublimation and manufacturing processes, as well as shots of the redesigned jumpers Brisbane wore while winning 3 straight AFL Grand Finals between 2001-03.”
Thanks Leo!

As a lifelong Browns fan, I’m really not looking forward to the upcoming uniform, but you did a great job, Trent Daniel. I always liked that alternate logo, and the white helmet looks really good. I believe their first helmets were white anyway, so it’s still a nod to their history. Again, great job on all the combinations.
Amen. Browns uniform check list: HOME- All White with Browns striping on jerseys and socks. White pants with braid. ROAD- See home. ALT-Brown jerseys & socks with Browns striping. White pants with braid. HELMETS-Orange with stripes. No logo. Here endeth the list.

The 1986 Sun Bowl featured the Alabama Crimson Tide of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Washington Huskies of thePacific-10 Conference (Pac-10). In Ray Perkins’s final game as Alabama head coach, the Crimson Tide defeated the Huskies 28—6.[1] The game is noted as being the first bowl game to have corporate sponsorship with John Hancock Insurance entering in the first year of a three-year, $1.5 million partnership

Did the Rose Bowl have a special logo for the 100th anniversary, in addition to the BCS title game logo?
I dont know but I do know the last “pure” rose bowl was 1998.
“For many years the Rose Bowl eschewed sponsorship, but for the 1999 Rose Bowl, the game became known as The Rose Bowl Game presented by AT&T. Unlike the other bowl games, the sponsor was not added to the title of the game, but instead as a presenter.[26] In 2002 it was branded The Rose Bowl Game presented by PlayStation 2. From 2003 to 2010, after the agreement with Sony expired, the game was presented by Citi.
On June 2010, Citi decided to end sponsorship of the Rose Bowl games, including the National Championship game.[27] In October 2010, HDTV maker Vizio signed a 4-year contract to be the official sponsor of the Rose Bowl games through 2014.”

Big upgrade for Charlotte.
Have I been frozen for 30 freakin’ years? Throw me a bone here. Why does a team need 9 freakin’ logos?
Well, you’ve got the primary logo, the wordmark, the logo for center court, the logo for the shorts and/or jersey, the logo for hats & t-shirts, the logo for the alternate uniform, the mascot’s logo, the logo for the microphone at press conferences, the logo for the backdrop for said press conferences…
Just when I think we’ve reached the apex of ridiculosity in the world of sports branding, the “logo system pyramid” makes its debut…
Congrats, Hornets! Nine new logos, and not a one of them as good as the original. (sigh)
A pyramid should be 10 logos, no? Like bowling pins. They screwed us out of a logo.
Just when you think they’ve ran out of things in the world of sports sponsorship, Mercedes Benz comes out to drive a pyramid…
Looks like the Hornet is shi**ing out a basketball.
Heh, yeah. Can’t unsee that now. Yet another NBA team suffers from the WE MUST PUT A BALL IN OUR LOGO syndrome.
That’s the first thing I thought of when seeing their primary. NBA stipulates a ball in every logo…
This set is so much better than what they are using now.
Nope; it looks like Hugo has a prostate problem. (Swollen ball would’ve been too easy (Big Easy?) but I’ve chosen to take the high road.)
What’s up with the “Buzz City” logo? I hope they don’t use that for one of their jerseys. At least Motor City is a nickname for Detroit. Buzz City is just a pathetic attention grabbing attempt.
I like how the logo has a smile instead of the semi-angry look of the original.
Are you kiddin’ me? That old-school scowl oozed personality.

“Buzz off, punk.”
The primary logo resembles a mosquito.
Nice video on the Bears fan punking his daughter out Phil. I’m guessing the mother roots for the Steelers, judging by the Steelers helmet Fathead in the background. Had to have been an interesting household in Week 3 this year…
retro padres uniform is brilliant; well done
Agreed; soulless Padres need a makeover bad. And not the child’s-drawing amateurism of the swingin’ padre, neither.
All that time and money and meetings and research and marketing spent on coming up with a new identity….and Charolette unveils a minor league baseball logo interchangeable with hundreds of others.
How dull.
There is no character, no sense of play, no originality here.
Another missed opportunity….

Noticed a small hiccup in your preview of the Heart of Dallas Bowl between UNT and UNLV. At UNLV, only the basketball team is called the Runnin’ Rebels. Nearly all other sports teams, including football, are simply the Rebels or Lady Rebels. The success of the basketball team in the 1980s and 1990s made that mistake fairly common.
I didn’t even realize that. Blame the Shark I guess. Loved watching those teams back then.
Did anyone notice that the new hornet is wearing a pair of Air Jordan XI’s?

The weather in Carolina has gotten so wet, that Drew Brees switched to gloves around 7:00 minutes into the 3rd quarter.
re: the SC Gamecocks black helmet from the coach Paul Dietzel days…they WERE worn on the field by seniors only (the underclassmen wore the standard white lids). photo evidence from the November 22, 1970 Charleston News & Courier

There’s a good chance that Kenny Washington picture was either taken when he was on the freshman squad or in a preseason photo sessions before numbers were finalized, which is the same reason why you see pictures of guys like Michigan’s Tom Harmon (“Old 98”) wearing numbers other than the ones they made famous in staged media photos.

Okay Phil, as a Sooner fan (and alum), I give you a “pass” for the “no contest” comment (only because of your alma mater). Otherwise, I’d sent you a bunch of hate mail! :)
Seriously, you just can’t go wrong with the Sugar Bowl match up this year. Both teams have long standing history with their current unis, and they almost mirror each other.
Many of us Sooner fans view Bama as out “sister school” (for football), so I have always like their uniforms. What’s better (for me) is that I actually prefer our all white look, and Bama’s crimson top and helmet. So, the match up will be that much better for me…
Of course, then the game will start, and I may not be so happy at that point…but this is about the uniforms!
Finally back to the hornets! Being from nc I will definitely go to some games now! Buzz City!
