Next up on the UWFFL – Chicago, Minnesota & Texas

UWFFL Logo

By Phil Hecken, with Rob Holecko

We’re ready for round 3 of the UWFFL, and we will have another three teams for you to check out, and vote upon, today. Our next sets are for the Chicago Cyclones, Minnesota Mustangs and Texas Timberwolves (that’s a lot of alliteration). Next weekend we’ll finish off the voting and then explain where the contest and UWFFL will go from here. But for today, it’s all about the next three fantasy cities.

I want to thank Rob Holecko for all his work on this, and all the great submitters for taking such an interest in this contest. And now, I will turn this over to Rob, who’ll take you through the next three groups of entries, complete with polls (so be sure to view all of the entries for each team and then be prepared to vote — write down your favorite if you have to, so you can easily vote on it after each of the sections). We’ll do these alphabetically, and some submitters sent in more than one graphic. Click on each graphic to enlarge.

Ready? OK — here’s Rob:

. . .

Well we are back again for the third round of voting in the UWFFL uniform submissions contest. But first here are last week’s winners. Of the three teams, we have two clear winners. Wes Peters, who the previous week won with his submission for the St. Louis Slaughter, won again with his entry for the Detroit Demons. It had quite a bit more red than we were expecting the Demons to wear, but hey, it’s what you all chose. And winning by quite a large margin for the Miami Cougars was Brett Callero’s design. For the third team from last week, the New York Sharks, it was a very close race with the top 4 vote getters all within 20 votes of each other. So we are going to put those four into a special run-off vote to better choose the winner:

Good luck to the run-off entrants, and congratulations to Wes and Brett for winning for Detroit and Miami. Now here’s the next batch of teams we’ll be voting on today: Chicago, Minnesota and Texas. That gives you one more week to still get your last minute entries in for San Diego, Tampa, Seattle and San Francisco. Read all about these teams and more about the UWFFL in general here.

Good luck to all of the entrants, and to the rest of you, happy voting! Next week we’ll have the winners, plus the winner of the New York Sharks run-off vote and also the final four teams to vote on. Again congratulations to all the winners so far, and thank you for your continued interest in the UWFFL.

OK. Thanks Rob. Readers, now it’s up to you — and you know what to do. Make sure to thank all the concepters and let them know what you like (or don’t) about their concepts. And don’t forget to vote — not just on the three new teams concepted today, but also to break the stalemate from last week. OK? OK!

Uni Tweaks Concepts

We have another new set of tweaks, er…concepts today. After discussion with a number of readers, it’s probably more apropos to call most of the reader submissions “concepts” rather than tweaks. So that’s that.

So if you’ve concept for any sport, or just a tweak or wholesale revision, send them my way.

Please do try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per image — if you have three uniform concepts in one image, then obviously, you can go a little over, but no novels, OK? OK!. You guys have usually been good with keeping the descriptions pretty short, and I thank you for that.

Like the colorizations, I’m going to run these as inline pics — click on each one to enlarge.

And so, lets begin:

~~~
We begin today with Jack von Albade, with some Mariner concepts:
HomeWhite LQ-01 - Jack von Albade
Road LQ-01 - Jack von Albade
HomeCream LQ-01 - Jack von Albade Alternate LQ-01 - Jack von Albade
Mariners State Emblem Recolor_Navy State Emblem - Jack von Albade MarinersTrident - Jack von Albade
Hey Phil,
Word on the street is the Mariners will be dropping Teal in favor of a Blue/Gold/Cream combo for 2014. Thought I’d give ’em a hand and mock up a full uniform set, including a modernized trident logo and a new one of my own design.
Thanks,
Jack von Albade
@jvonalbade
. . .
We close today with Mike Williams with some Broons looks:
bruins home - Mike Williams
bruins  away - Mike Williams
bruins third - Mike Williams
Hey Phil,
I’m a huge Bruins fan and like their uniforms in a general way. However, like a lot of teams, I think the Bruins have a lot of superfluous stuff that just clutters up what should be a very clean and elegant design. So I tweaked their home and away unis, and just for esses and gees came up with a storm trooper look as an alternate.
Mike
. . .
And that’s it for today. Back with more next time.
Stirrup Friday
Stirrup Fridays…
Because we love the stirrup here at Uni Watch, this section is devoted to those of us who sport the beautiful hose on Fridays — a trend popularized many years ago by Robert P. Marshall, III. For many of us, it’s become a bit of an obsession, but a harmless one — a reflection of our times. Where we once had Friday ties, which has been replaced by Casual Friday — we now have Stirrup Fridays. It’s an endearingly simple concept — no matter where you work (or even if you don’t) — break out a fresh pair of rups to compliment (or clash with) your Friday attire.
A TON of submissions this week, including one from the one and only Jerry Reuss, as a youngun. Great stuff today, so let’s get right to it:
. . . . .
astros_stirrups - Rich Loup
Rich Loup:
Hi, Phil and Robert. Forgive me for the long delay of this email, but attached is a photo of my ’70s Astros stirrups for the first MLB game of the year. My friends and I made Houston TV, as you can tell from the logo on this screengrab. Got a few compliments from other fans, too.
Thanks
Rich Loup
. . .
03 Jerry Reuss3(200dpi)
Jerry Reuss:
Hi Phil,
This is how I bloused my pants and wore my stirrups (black with orange stripes) back in 1967 when pitching for Ritenour High School in suburban St. Louis. This image was cropped from the grainy, original picture so I decided to go totally retro! My wife asked if I was pitching to Babe Ruth when it was taken.
Jerry Reuss
. . .
John Kimmerlein - 54 Orioles
John K.:
Phil,
The Orioles are in town so I showed my support with their ’54 stirrup style at a client dinner.
John K.
. . .
Cardinals - Valentina McAfee
Valentina McAfee:
Phil & Robert,
Thank you, you made two St. Louis fans very happy.
Val
. . .
Orange Rups - James Poisso
James Poisso:
Phil,
This Friday’s stirrups are what I feel the Astros should have included with their new unis.
James
. . .
Craig Knox - Cardinals
Craig Knox:
Robert & Phil,
The day I wear the stirrups to coach , my son gets the game ball. The revolution continues!
Craig
. . .
Valentinia McAfee - Cardinals
Valentina McAfee:
Phil,
Teddy rocking the 1933 Cardinals stirrups for Burbank Bacon’s (aka The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’s) first game of the new season.
Val
. . .
Justin D'Agostino - just red
Justin D’Agostino:
Hey Phil,
Been reading the blog for years. Today I finally did my first Stirrup Friday. Nothing special, just solid red to match my Phillies batting practice jersey. Some guys in my office loved It.
Take care
Jason D’Agostino
. . .
Chris LaBella - 1948 Braves
Chris LaBella:
Phil,
This is Chris LaBella Jr. He is 10 and plays in the Deer Park NY Little League. He is sporting the 1946 Braves stirrups and hit two triples wearing these beauties.
Chris LaBella Sr
Sidenote, we already won the contest once so let someone else have a chance.
. . .
Michael Clary - 1941 Pirates
Michael Clary:
Hey Phil & Robert,
It’s that bottom white stripe that brings a tear to my eye; whomever it was that designed these 1941 Pirates stirrups was a genius. I wore these during a baseball tournament in Portland, Maine back in 2011 and (surprisingly) received more jeers than cheers.
– Clarybird
. . .
And that ends today’s look at Stirrup Friday — all of you who participate, send me your pics and a brief (~50 words) description of their relevance, and I’ll run ’em here on Saturday (and sometimes Sunday too!). Be sure to visit Robert’s House of Hose for news on rups.
And now…here’s …
~~~~~~~~~~

Stirrup Header

Comrade Marshall’s Rupdate:

Comrades!

I was really hoping for a May Day spoof for this weeks Stirrup Friday contest, but it didn’t come. So there is no official winner because everyone is a counter revolutionary 7″ist traitor. That being said, I am going to get in touch with Val McAfee to give away a pair because they couldn’t come to my latest theremin symposium in Cardinal stirrups. Speaking of the contest, in too many weeks give away losses out-way what the revolution brings in, which is no way to continue the stirrup revolution, so for now on the best stirrup pixture wins a buy one/get one prize that can be used whenever, not just right away. I hope that is okay with everyone.

As for the legaments of the revolution, despite being in stock I am putting up the Monarchs as “new” because the royals are as swingin’ as a Friday night at Harry’s Country Club. I also don’t like to take pre-orders when there is one still pending like the beer shower 59 World Series hose. So until that comes in, I will pick a stirrup at random to run at a discount special each week. Speaking of “new”, I am also deciding betwixt the 69 Pilots and 57 reds to run next, Thoughts? get in-touch. The stirrups and I can be found here.

to each according their stirrvp.

Makin’ Bets on Kentucky Derby Day…

So today is Kentucky Derby Day. I wrote about it waaaaaay back in 2009 (most of those links are still good, since I flick’red them) and if you feel like checking that out, it’s a good read. If not, check out this slide show I prepared below showing the race through the years. Be sure to also click on the image to the left — it’s a classic Kentucky Derby poster from Hunter S. Thompson from the 1970s — and it’s beautiful. Enjoy!

And that’s going to do it for today. Last evening the Brewers broke out their gold-front-panel caps. It was an interesting look, and one meant to be a sort of throwback — since they did wear the pins (which they wore yesterday) at the same time as they wore the gold-front-panel-cap — but they never wore that as an actual combination. That was always the road cap in those days. Lots more photos here. Can’t say that I’m an actual fan of this look, but if the Brewers were ever to break out the road version of that uniform with that cap, then I’d be a huge fan.

You guys have a great Saturday — enjoy the greatest two minutes in sports among the playoff games in hoop & puck, plus the baseball. I’ll be back tomorrow with a VERY special post from UW stalwart Chance Michaels (with something Brewers-related, dontcha know), so be sure to check back in then. Give me a follow on Twitter, too — @PhilHecken.

Peace!

    Jerry Reuss – this is not a uni-related question, but were you a Beach Boys fan in high school? Years ago it seems like I read an interview you did in which you talked about your favorite 1960s music.

    Thanks for asking. Generally speaking, I love the music of the 1960s. The Beach Boys, through the Pet Sounds album, are a big part of it.

    As long as we’re asking off-topic Jerry Reuss questions, I’d like to know what it was like working with Chris Berman for a whole season in 1991? He seems like he’d be a fun guy to work with.

    I worked with Chris about 5-6 times year during the 1991-1993 baseball seasons. His personality off-field was every bit as big as it was on-camera. He was like the pied-piper with the patrons of every place we would stop after a game exchanging nicknames of players of every sport.

    Once, while shopping for clothes at Nordstrom’s in downtown Seattle, he had sales people from all over the store hustling to satisfy his whims. He dropped more than few grand on ties, shirts, belts, etc. I watched the whole spectacle from the high chair at the shoeshine stand realizing this was one of the greatest shows that ESPN would never air!

    What a blast! Hard to believe it was twenty years ago!

    I am very disappointed in Wes Peters for stealing the Broncos old horse for his Mustangs concept. C’mon man…

    I’m thinkin’ Ford may (hypothetically) have a problem with some of those Minnesota Mustangs logos…

    Adam Hainsfurther’s alternate Chicago look is my absolute favorite of any of the entries so far. Incorporating the flag, and that shade of blue? Really sharp, wish I could vote for it a hundred times.

    At the UConn Journalism awards yesterday, they gave out refrigerator magnets designed to look like a press pass for a deceased sportswriter whose memory they were giving an award in. I emailed a picture to Paul. It has 8 different logos on it.

    Man, I gotta say those Texas Timberwolves uniform submissions are incredible. For most of the other UWFFL teams there were 1-3 that stood out. But almost all of the Timberwolves designs are beauts, with some creative logos too. Great job guys!

    I didn’t submit any entries for these teams because nothing really sparked me. Then I saw Adam Hainsfurther’s secondary logos and realized a cyclone could be in the shape of Illinois! Light bulb went on too late.

    And, for years I tried to do a Mariners cap insignia with an anchor and the letter “S” but it always turned into a dollar sign…but I like these jerseys.

    Vote for Miami Cougars submissions (RUN-OFF!)

    shouldn’t that say “New York Sharks”…?

    The brewerz let the starting pitcher coose their jersey for the game. I’m starting to hate Peralta.

    Brewers wore yellow panel ’80s Road Caps’ with their faux-back home pins. I kind of liked it. But man…kind of confusing at the same time having grown up with those unis.

    link

    I used to have a cap with The Who wordmark logo on a yellow panel, Brewers-style.

    link Star Wars Galactic Champions League Semi-Final Preview. I wish they had better shots of the team logos and uniforms. Otherwise, it’s just an excuse to see the presenter in a Slave Leia costume.

    I’m a big fan of Brett Callero’s Texas Timberwolves logo. Among several nicely-designed concepts for that team, it stands out as the best. I wonder, however if it might look even better (a) without the crosshairs centered around the wolf, or (b) with the crosshairs lines extended all the way through the left side of the logo.

    Thanks! I appreciate the compliment.

    The lines in the logo are actually in the position they are in to coordinate with the location of the star. Together they make the Texas flag.

    Disagree. The Mariners concepts aren’t a bad start at all. Needs some polishing but the colors are good, I like idea of the anchor with the rope S, and the shape of the trident works.

    I’ve really enjoyed seeing what stuff people come up with for the logos and uniforms

    Astros are playing tonight with orange caps, orange under-sleeves and home whites. They look really nice. In the cutaways on MLB Network I haven’t seen any socks yet.

    Looks like navy socks on the Astros, which doesn’t look nearly as good as orange would have, given the orange caps and under-sleeves.

    Agreed. From what I’ve heard out of the Astros, there are no orange socks options (at least not yet). Not sure if they plan to introduce them. With the caps & sleeves, they should have the orange sock option.
